Countdown to the MLB Deadline

The FAN Morning Show goes into its final hour, 60 minutes closer to MLB’s trade deadline later today. Ben Ennis & Brent Gunning begin the hour by welcoming on Sportsnet’s own Jeff Blair to join the conversation (0:33). The host of Blair & Barker weighs in on the deals the Jays have made thus far, especially the return they got in the Yusei Kikuchi trade as well as other names he thinks the organization should be listening on. Blair and the hosts look at the big picture of the organization – starting with the executives at the top in Mark Shapiro & Ross Atkins. The trio get into what they’ve seen from them in their almost decade long tenure, who’s team it really is, who might (or could) lead them into the next chapter of the franchise and the decisions that need to be made on superstars Bo Bichette & Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Next the boys continue the baseball chatter; this time with former big league catcher and now one of the hosts of the popular Foul Territory podcast, Erik Kratz (29:24). They look around the Majors and what teams could still get some big deals done today. Then, the morning duo get Kratzie’s thoughts on what the Blue Jays have done so far at this deadline, if this team could be a winner, and where things went wrong for the franchise. They look at who may have worn out their welcome in Toronto as well as missteps management made in not bringing back certain players. Erik ends by telling some stories and relaying what it's like for a catcher changing teams in the middle of season and having to learn a whole new pitching staff.

good afternoon and welcome to the show. >> Good morning, Joe sports at 5'9" in Van Beneden, keeping our eyes on Canada and Australia and men's basketball as the Canadian men now trailing by two, 37-35 as they play in the second quarter SGA back in after two early fouls. That is Major League Baseball's trade deadline day, goes at six a day. You can expect excellence online and in the showroom visit Don Valley North Lexus dot com today's insider. The host of Blair Barker, it is Jeff Blair. How's it going, Jeff? >> Very good, guys. How are you? >> Doing very well. It feels like the Blue Jays did very well in a you say kukuchi trade. I try to be a contrarian, right? I try to find a little sliver of area where I can go counter to the group thing, the popular opinion. It's hard to find one here, Jeff. Did you find one? >> Well, you know, as I said, anybody who tells you they know what any of these prospects are going to turn into is lying. >> Sure. >> Having said that, you know, this is a guy in Jake Bloss, the pitcher they got from Houston that I noticed fan grass moved him immediately to the top of the Blue Jays prospect list. Again, that's just the side of irrelevant because the value of a prospect is it's really what another team thinks it is more than anything else. You know, I will say this a couple of things about that deal. One, in terms of getting players who will be in the majors or could be in the majors by the end of the year, the Jays got three in Will Wagner Bloss who I think will pitch in the majors by the end of the year and Loper Fido. So that's not bad. It's never bad when you can, you know, give your major league roster something it doesn't have. My caution with this deal is the same as it's going to be with any deal this front office makes for pitchers without a track record. These guys could be really good, or I should say Bloss could be really good. He could be Anthony Kay. He could be Simeon Wood Richardson. Not bad, but certainly not impact starters and point of fact, both Kay or I'm sorry Wood Richardson in particular, the main value that Jay's got out of him was trading him for Jose Barrios. This organization has done well when it's gone out and signed free agent pitchers. It's done well when it's traded for established major leaguers with the track record for the most part. I'm thinking of adding Robbie Ray and Taiwan Walker at the trade deadline. What it hasn't done well is drafted and developed young pitchers and taken care of them, kept them healthy. There's a reason that the top three pitching prospects in this organization won't pitch this year after undergoing various surgeries. So I always throw that out there or I should say I will always throw that out there as a cautionary tale. There's something about this organization and the way it evaluates and develops young pitching that isn't all that good. Having said that again, I get back to this. You've got three guys who knock on wood could be in the majors at some point this year. The J's have intentionally gone out and added position players. They've intentionally gone out and added left hand hitting or switch hitting position players. And again, if you pay any attention at all to prospect rankings, I use MLB pipeline as an example because I think they're pretty consistent in their rankings. The J's have added seven prospects to their top 30 for an organization that was really not highly regarded in terms of its minor league system. That can only be a good thing. Yeah. I mean, any time you can restock the cupboards. If you're cupboards are full, you should be pretty selective about what you put in there. I only got a little bit of space. I don't know. Let me put exactly what I need in here. But when the cupboards are a little bare, you do have to just kind of not grab anything that's available to you, of course, but the more the kind of merrier there. You know, when you throw in all of the deals that have been done, how valuable do you think it is that the J's seem to have. And again, like they didn't get this all done two weeks ago, but they seem to have done all of their heavy lifting ahead of time. Does that tell you something one way or another? I mean, there's been talk of, and not from sources, just wondering aloud, like the idea of do they package this to try to turn it into something else? Do you think it's just a case of not wanting to be left at, you know, 559 holding two or three assets that you were hoping to get rid of? How beneficial do you think it was that they were able to kind of get out in front of this deadline and not say they won't do anything else today, but all the heavy lifting has been done. Yeah, I mean, I'm not entirely certain about that. I've got to think that they'll trade Chris Bassett given the market for starting pitching right now. I think they'd be silly if they're not entertaining that. I mean, why do you just quickly, why do you think more likely Bassett than Gossman there, Blair? Yeah, because Bassett's essentially come out and said, trade me, you know, with the men. I mean, I want to pitch and I want to pitch in the postseason. Well, you know, I hate to tell you that's, you know, the coded word is I really want to pitch for any playoff team. And unfortunately, this is not a playoff team. So I think that's part of it. I also think that given the market for starting pitching right now and, you know, given the fact that it appears as if maybe Garrett Crochet and Tariq Scooble don't get moved. Although I mean, the whole idea of Detroit moving Scooble hasn't made sense to me from the beginning. If that's the case, you know, in the game of musical chairs, there are four or five teams right now that need another starting pitcher. So if I'm the Blue Jays, why wouldn't I look at trading a guy like Chris Bassett? I think you'd probably get more for him than Kevin Gossman because he's been more consistent this year than Gossman has. So that, but that's, you know, that aside to get back to your original question, very seldom our packages put together at the trade deadline. Like it seems to me a lot of times what you get is one guy traded for a couple of minor leaguers. You know, it's very seldom do you get that three-way deal that you got with, that you saw develop between Chicago, St. Louis and L.A. And I think part of the reason you don't see those deals is I really do think that when you put those deals together, the weakest team usually ends up getting screwed for whatever the reason. The Chicago White Sox did not do well in that deal. They gave up way too much for what they got in return. So I think the one thing I know about the Jays from talking to other executives is, and this will probably come as no surprise to people, they do, they have a preset value for all their players. And if they get that value, they will make the trade. They're more inclined to make the trade than say, well, if we don't make this trade now, let's hold off and see if we can get something better in 24 hours. Make they look at a deal. They say this is good. This is fair value for what we need and for what we value our player as being worth. Let's make the deal. Let's not wait. And I happen to like that approach. I keep getting back this. You know, the criticism, I think, of Ross Atkins in this front office has to do more with how they manage assets, I think, than actually acquiring them. They have not done badly in the trade market. If you throw out, I know you can't do it because it's two big deals, but if you put aside the tie Oscar Hernandez deal and to a certain degree, the Moreno and Lourdes Goriel Jr. deal and sit back and say, okay, what has Ross Atkins done in the trade market? He's done okay. He got tie Oscar in the trade market. He got burrios in the trade market. It hasn't been kind of the horror show that a lot of people think it has been. Where this front office, I think, has really, has really blown it is in how it sees its own team. It overreacted to the loss to the Seattle Mariners and the playoffs, that collision between Springer and Boba Shedd, I think, convinced the front office that they had to go a whole hog into run prevention. I think they overreacted that and they underreacted to what happened in the series against the Minnesota Twins. It wasn't just Jose burrios coming out that caused the team that postseason. It was that they couldn't hit. No. So that's my concern with this front office. It's less the deals that are made and more how they go about how they see themselves, I guess, as the way I would put it. Yeah. And they've had nearly a decade to create a winner in that no playoff wins and no division title. So that's enough for me to say goodbye to the general manager. He's still there. He's making the decisions, I assume, at the deadline here. Is that any indication as to his fate at the conclusion of this season or is it just one of those situations where you just you don't fire a GM in the middle of the season? I mean, I don't think you generally do fire a GM in the middle of the season. Quite frankly, these deals, you know, one, I don't think it's Ross sitting in a room. I know it's not Ross sitting in a room by himself. Trust me. I mean, these guys don't decide. They each don't decide what they want in their coffee unless there's six other people involved in the process. So, you know, there is an element of groupthink here. I would think Mark Shapiro is probably involved in these decisions now because, you know, let's face it. I think, you know, an ownership that's spending $235 million is probably on payroll, has probably gone to Mark and said, you know, kind of make sure the sharp objects are kept away from these guys during this trade deadline. Okay, Mark? And I'm sure he's, I'm sure he's been involved in it. But yeah, these deals, no. The biggest decisions are going to be bow and Vlad, and quite frankly, I don't want Ross making those decisions. And I don't, I don't have any insight as to whether or not that that opinion is held by Mark Shapiro or the people above Mark. You know, this one thing this front office is and this ownership group is, is their leak proof. So, I have no idea where that sits. But in terms of these deals, I'm perfectly fine with this, with this front office deciding what to do with, you know, with guys like Kukchi and Turner and guys of that nature. It's just the bigger issues, the the bigger philosophical questions about what you do with bow and Vlad, I would prefer someone else making that call. So are those the only two decisions that make that threshold? Like, you know, you threw out the idea of a, of a basket trade there. And again, like you're, you're not the, for himself, possibly suggesting it. But like, is it just bow and death? Yeah. And you know, I'm glad that that reached that threshold or is there like, okay. Yeah. Cause I think that's where a lot of people are at. Like I, I look at this and, you know, a burrios trade just feels not untenable, but just like it's just kind of out of the realm of possibility right now. But he is somebody who I think is, you know, closer to those two than closer to the rest of the roster as a whole. You know, not to make this about who the next GM is, but how different is it if it's somebody who's currently in the org? Like, you know, James Click, he hasn't been here for, for ten years. A lot of people, that's the kind of first name that is often throwing out. I'm of the belief that if you're going to make a change, doesn't 1 trillion percent have to be somebody else from outside, but I'd want a pretty wide exhaustive search. How different do you think it would be if, okay, Atkins is out and Shapiro's still here and it's Click that's promoted or somebody else from within the org? Yeah. I don't think it'll make any difference. And I'm with you on this. This is not, this is not Ross Atkins front office. This is Mark Shapiro's front office. It's been in place for eight years. I mean, their fingerprints are all over, they're all over everything. I mean, they design the player development complex for God's sake. So this team is going to be, this will be Mark Shapiro's team for five or six years after he leaves just in terms of, if you look at how, how far down the restructuring has gone, if you look at the people that have been brought in. Now, in terms of James Click, you know, a couple of issues with this. One thing I found interesting, I think it was Ben Nicholson Smith pointed this out. I don't think so. Will Wagner and Loper Fito, who are part of the Houston deal, were both drafted by James Click when he was with the Astros. Here's the thing with James Click. And I roll my eyes anytime anybody automatically says, my God, they should fire Ross. James Click would be so much better. One, he's VP of baseball strategy. And it seems to me that all we've been complaining about for the past, you know, 18 months as this team strategy or lack thereof. And again, I don't know what these front office titles mean. Nobody does. But, you know, VP of baseball strategy would suggest you have something to do with baseball strategy. And if your baseball strategy stinks, which more often than not has been the case with this team on the field, at least, then, you know, perhaps you want to have a second thought about whether or not he's your GM and two when he was with Houston. I mean, guys, he inherited a team we could have run. I think his biggest move with the Houston Astros was bringing in Janir Diaz, who's become a pretty good offensive player and is their catcher. That's kind of been a signature move. I mean, he inherited Braggman. He inherited L2. He inherited Tucker. You know, it's not like he came in right away and put his imprint on the team. So if it's me, I think you do have to cast a wider net. I don't know how you do that when you have Mark Shapiro under contract for just one more year. His contract does expire at the end of next year. Ross Atkins and John Schneider's run a year later. Do you go out and if your ownership, do you start looking for Shapiro's replacement? Do you look at maybe the Minnesota Twins front office and try to get somebody who is, you know, a vice president of baseball ops there and promote them? You know, do you trust Mark to go out and cast a wider net? Those are really, those are difficult questions to answer. And that's why the more, the more I've thought about it, I've kind of gone towards the idea that Ross Atkins will be back next year as GM. Yep. I don't want that necessarily. But I just looking at the timeline. I'm not certain, I'm not certain if there's anything else that can be done. Again, especially considering the fact that Mark Shapiro has one year left in his deal. It's always, and I will always, I will always believe that Mark intentionally structured this so that the GM has a contract that runs one year later than his. Because I think that kind of, in some ways, sends a sign to ownership. And yeah, it's, I don't think it's the slam dunk that a lot of people think it is. Having said that, I would certainly, I mean, I've said this, I would certainly be more comfortable having somebody else address the bow and variety situation. And I guess guys where it may change is if the J's decide to really knuckle down and try to get a long-term deal done with Vlady. You know, I'm sure I know Ross Atkins can spend money with the best of them showing that. So if they can get, if this front office can get Vlady locked up to a six or seven year contract. And then the only thing left to do is trade bow. I would, I would see that as being further proof that Ross will stay here. The big question I have in the big concern I have is if you don't get anything done with both of those guys in the off season, I don't have enough faith in this front office right now to say I want them pivoting off of, you know, the bow and Vlady area into something else. Yeah, I said the same thing about Ross earlier on in the program that it does. Yeah, I can very easily see us in there. I mean, he let him keep his job after the debacle that was the post season that the season as a whole where they only want 89 games during the regular season a year ago. And then the subsequent media fail abilities afterwards. So yeah, I mean, I could once again see Mark Shapiro letting Ross Atkins keep his job. I mean, it's you're right in not knowing what each of these guys do considering their job titles. But I think we can all agree that what Mark Shapiro has done with the ballpark with the player development stuff with like the team outside of, you know, the product on the field. It's been really good. Other than that little thing. I mean, that's important. The baseball team's important. But yeah, part of in recalling the narrative around him when he left Cleveland, he was removed from baseball operations in Cleveland, wanted to get back into it. So I can't imagine you could like take that power away from it. Is there a scenario where Mark Shapiro remains president of this team and then like gives up his baseball operations title? Is his fingerprints on the baseball team? I mean, I don't know. I honestly, I know this about Mark. You know, Mark, Mark has kept his eyes open for other jobs since he's been here. He was a candidate for Big Ten Commissioner a couple of years ago, at least. And that's pretty much a matter. Pardon me. That's pretty much a matter of public record. And he's still a youngish guy. I don't think he wants to, you know, don't think he has any desire to retire. I think he views himself as somebody with an eye. You know, I've always thought that he's got an eye in the commissioner's office. And you know, other people have said the same thing, that he kind of envisions himself as somebody who certainly still has another a couple of moves left in his career. I don't, I hadn't really thought about it to that degree. I don't know. Does the front office or does ownership say to Mark, okay, you're here for another year. You do this. You know, try to do for us what you did with the Cleveland, then Cleveland Indians when you, you know, I made, when you traded Bartolo Colón for, for, for Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Brandon Phillips. And basically, yeah, basically started in an entire new era of Cleveland baseball. I hadn't thought of it to that degree, but I, you know, maybe that is, maybe that is a possibility. And essentially, and for all we know ownership has kind of said to Mark, look, you know, we've spent the luxury tax and interestingly, these deals do, I believe, take the J's to a position where they're below the luxury tax. But I think the front off, it wouldn't surprise me if ownership has said to Mark, we, we've given you this much money to spend. It hasn't worked. We're still going to give you money to spend. But we want you to be more involved, more hands-on in the day-to-day operations of the baseball side. And from where I am, that may not be an entirely bad thing. Yeah, I think the reactions to that would certainly be an interesting one, especially given, you know, the two kind of ways that could go. You keep mentioning the big decisions in the off-season, obviously, those are Vlad and Bo. If the decisions are, and it's this front office's opinion, I don't think anything is set in stone on that, but it's to try to pay Vlad and come to a nice long term extension with him and to potentially go into Bixette's walkier. Is that not something that Atkins could do? I mean, like you said, he could spend money with the best of them. If the decision, because to me it all kind of hinges around Bixette, and if they're of the opinion of they can go into the walkier, then, well, there's the only big decision to make is paying Vlad and how much that is. If they're going to trade Bixette, that would feel obviously like a massive decision that you would want to, you know, embolden whoever's going to be making those, hopefully going forward for a long time. Yeah, well, I mean, there's also the flip side, right? It's almost, if you're going to strip an organization down, would you almost rather have somebody do it than fire them so the new guy can come in and not be faced with his first major decision being what the hell do I do with Bo or Vladie, right? Yeah, that's fine. But yeah, listen, again, I think if they can get Vladie signed, then the issue becomes what do you do with Bo? And I think in Bo's case, it's probably a little less complicated than it is with Vladie. For whatever reason, there's always been the feeling that Vladie wants to sign in Toronto and Bo could care less. And I think that's kind of been accurate, even though Bo did come to an agreement with the team on that contract that takes them through arbitration. I think there's always been this idea that Vladie would be more predisposed towards signing and staying here, whereas as Bo would be more inclined to move on. And I think part of the reason for that is Bo's not a dummy. And his people aren't dummies. And they see what free agent short stops are getting in the market. And yeah, his Bo is good defensively as some of the other free agent short stops we've seen out there know. But when healthy, he's the guy that can win a batting title. So I think that's also part of the equation is that a guy like Bo Bechette given what the market is for short stops, especially at his age, it might be a little more not saying it'll be more active than Vladie's than the market for Vladie. But I think it might be surprisingly more active for Bo. It might be a little more active than people think because I think teams look at Bo. I think they look past the defensive deficiencies a little bit. And quite frankly, if you're Bo Bechette and the LA Dodgers come along and offer you a seven year contract and say to you by the way, would you consider going to second base? You'd probably go, yeah. Yeah. You know. And Bo is kind of made it known to people that he would not be averse to moving off short stop for the right guy. So if the Dodgers, if he's asked to move off short stop because there's an established building on a short stop there, a Lindor or a Craya or a Seager or somebody like that, I have no doubt that Bo would say sure, I'll go and play another position. Yeah. Just everybody has their price for Marcus Emmion. It was $175 million. I do a lot of things for that money. Yeah. Moving one position left on the infield. Yeah. It's fine. Absolutely.
