Rashida Jones is back in an Apple TV+ show that is a mix of several different genres, says Keith, and seem to all work together for an interesting series.

TV Talk: Sunny
[music] Hi folks, Keith here. Welcome to another episode of Movies and a Meal. In the podcast, we talk about movies and other things while we eat. For this TV episode, I want to take a look at Sunny in the Apple+ series starring Rashida Jones, which on paper at least shouldn't work at all. However, four episodes into its 10-episode opening run, this show which runs on extremely slow burn, is also a slowly starting to hook me. As we start off in this series based on Colin O'Sullivan's novel, The Dark Manual, We Meet American Suzy, who's living in Kyoto with their Japanese husband Masa and their young son Zinn. I'm really not spoiling anything to say Masa and Zinn disappear in a mysterious plane crash, because that's what really launches everything that comes next. Jones' Suzy is gifted as Constellation's Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots designed by the company her husband worked for. From there, the hits, many, and misses of Sunny are yours to discover. What makes all this work is a twist from dark comedy to action piece to full-blown conspiracy thriller is both Jones and the confidence of creators Katie Robbins and Lucy D'Choniac. Jones has the perfectly dried demeanor to make this all work, and Judy Ong, as the mother-in-law she spars with throughout, is a great match. Even better on the comedy side is Sunny, voiced by Joanna Satomora. Now, she first breaks down the defenses of technophobe Suzy, then gets in on all the madness that slowly unfolds herself. I won't tell you any more than the conspiracy here, even as it branches into the Yakuza, killer robots, and more, and slowly becoming as enjoyable as the comedy. So especially for Sita Jones, but for a mystery that slowly hooks you in more and more, I can recommend Sunny on the Apple Plus, and I'll definitely be watching the final six season one episodes.
