(upbeat music) - Good morning, Chicago. And welcome in to the Captain Jacob Morning Show on ESPN 1000. And we're on YouTube as well, YouTube.com. Make sure you look for the ESPN Chicago channel and subscribe to ESPN Chicago on YouTube as well as on Twitch. Twitch.tv/esben1000Chicago. Both YouTube and Twitch for ESPN Chicago brought to you by the Chicago Ducky Derby on August 7th, adopt the duck at duckrace.com to support our special Olympic athletes and cap. We're just a few days away now from the first preseason game of the season, the Hall of Fame game with the Bears and they're taking on the Texans. And there's a lot of questions on it. Who's gonna start, who's not gonna start? Again, it's four preseason games. We'll be able to see Caleb Williams and the ones a lot throughout the preseason. We'll get at least a little bit of a flavor of exactly what we're gonna see. - Look, there are guys that are gonna have opportunities, whether that's Austin Booker or some of the offensive line backups. There's guys that are trying to make this football team that are gonna sell out hard on Thursday night. And like Albert said, is it the most exhilarating football you're gonna watch? No. But the fact the Bears are gonna put their uniforms on and run out against another team in their uniforms gets me excited, at least for a while, right? - Yes. - Of course. Cap, we've made it all this time to get to this point where you and I can be able to break down games and actually not just with question marks or conjecture about these players, we actually see them play. - Yeah, I don't know. Friday morning when you and I do the show, we're gonna break down the Hall of Fame game, but we will talk about how to Tyson look for whatever amount of time he's in there. Or was there a key play? God forbid a key injury. I'm sure CJ Stroud's not gonna play and none of their big guys are gonna play either, 'cause I thought Albert made a great point when he said the two teams get on the same page. It's not like, yeah, we're starting Williams and all our ones and they're starting their fours. - Well, there you have it, Shay. You heard it first from the cap man. Come up Friday, we'll not be breaking down the Hall of Fame game. So, all those notes I had, I had it ready. First, second, third, fourth, I guess it. We're not doing that. - No Bear's Friday? - No Bear's Friday. - I didn't say we can't have a Bear's Friday, 'cause I just said, if you were listening, you don't usually listen to me, that we will sure talk about whatever Tyson Beijing plays, but yeah, what they do in the third and fourth quarters, not gonna be a big deal. It's the Hall of Fame game. - Thank you. - Caleb's not even gonna be in uniform, in my opinion. Hard Knocks is built on the third and fourth quarter of the Hall of Fame game. - Exactly. - Those guys out there playin' for their jobs. That is the backbone of a staple program in HP now. - When is the first one of those? August 6th? - Look it up, Carter. - Gotta be comin' up close, quick. - 'Cause of the extended season. Yeah, I wanna say that it used to be in like late July, but I think that has changed. - August 6th is the debut, Tuesday at 8 p.m. Can't wait to watch that. - Yes. So, and you'll get the post-game hard-knocks show on YouTube. Many ESPN Chicago personalities, YouTube and Twitch, reacting immediately. - To it as it's over. That'll be super cool to hear. Leave Shriver's voice talking about our team. Oh, stop. George, what are you been waitin' on, man? - I've had this page ready to go for nine months, and now I can't use it. 'Cause we won't have the breakdown on Friday. - Oh, well. - God bless. - Now, hard-knocks post-game show brought to you by Dr. Pepper. - No, lovely. - That'd be great. - What did Albert say? He lasts about three minutes in a Hall of Fame game. - He said, "I used to get excited about him." - Well, there's a pill for that. - It's the Hall of Fame game. - Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears and the pros and cons are playing in preseason. - I always think there's more pros and cons in anything, especially for a young guy like myself. The reps are always paramount for anybody like myself. A young rookie, second-year guy, third-year guys. It's paramount. It's really important, and you know, we'll see about these preseason games coming up, how they play out. - You know what I've always wanted, Cap? And I think the best teams that we've covered that actually had a playoff run had as close as possible to being 50-50 on both sides of the football. - For years, UNI and Bears fans have been able to marvel at terrific defenses, opportunistic, productive defenses, get into the quarterback or turn teams over, the old peanut punch in the Lovey Smith administration. We'll recall this, right? And the offense was always lagging behind. - Yep. - There would be UNI standing on the sidelines and in Bourbon A, now Lake Forest. And you say, "Ah, the offense struggling along "because the defense is so dominant and so ferocious," right, because when you look at the depth chart, the productive players and the pro bowlers or the difference makers on the defense, hope is. And this iteration of the Chicago Bears is that we get close to as 50-50 as we can when we look at the offense being able to handle their own and those need the defense to turn it over and score for them. There was times where UNI are watching Bears football, like, please, get a turnover and score because the offense is not gonna do it. Rying the football and have a pedestrian offense does not get it done. Rying the football helps, but as far as where we are in 2024, man, I wanna see a vertical passing game along with Rying the football. And again, I look at the notes that's like you do in the websites and newspapers about the notes at practice. Those are better than the articles. The offense faced a third and five from midfield with 50 seconds remaining but could not get into field goal range after Montez sweat. Quickly beat Darnell Wright to a sack on Williams. They talked about how the defense has dominated. My hope is that the offense can catch up to what the defense could be. UNI have had very little complaints about the defense outside of, hey, someone on the other side of Montez sweat. Otherwise, UNI are a lucky step in the secondary and the linebackers saying those guys can be difference makers. My hope is that the offensive line and the offense for Williams could be on the same par. When you get that cap, sky's the limit. - Yeah, Darnell Wright is in his second ear and he's going up against one of the 10 best pass rushes in football. Iron sharpens iron. You would hope that when they get done, Montez is like, all right, come here. Do this instead of that. And he works with him because Tez has a lot of experience. You would hope that's how that's going down and that Darnell gets tougher and better because of who he faces every day. - I think that that will be good also for Williams to be able to talk to the secondary of this team as well. I typed in Beijing, got picked off by Jalen Jones, a cornerback. Beijing had available Jones wide open to put the ball on the money. It was just right off his receiver's hands and then it was an interception. - The hope is that it can all be able to work together. It's like, hey man, I saw your eyes in that situation. That's why I picked you off. Just being a good teammate. That's all, trying to help him along. So, I'm overjoyed by what the Bears can be defensively, but I want the offense to be able to catch up because that tells me that increases the chances of the Bears being able to be a playoff contender. When the offense is caught up, wow, that'd be great to see. - Yeah, and I love when the quarterback is truly, I could listen to Caleb all day. He's very, very good in those situations where he gives deep, concise, thoughtful answers. And last week, when they got into a fight, he went in, he was the guy breaking it up. Ryan Bates is like, hey, I love that, but you gotta be careful. We can't lose you, God forbid. But love that Caleb was the guy in there pulling Demarcus Walker, a way bigger guy, out of the pile, breaking it all up. Loved it. Aaron Rodgers yesterday called out the Jets offense for sloppy play, blasted him. Hey, unacceptable. So, that's what leaders do. - Do you agree what Vellis Jones said? - Yeah, I'm unguardable. - He's got 12 career catches. - Unguardable. - Cap, really? - I can understand if you're at the top of your game. If you're CB Lamb, Justin Jefferson, you? Unguardable? Okay. - Like if he had answered that question and said, look, I feel like if I can get some reps and get an opportunity, I can be really a tough cover 'cause I'm quick, but I haven't proven it yet. I'm unguardable? That's the quote. - Okay. - Idiot. - He's gonna make the football team, right? - That's just stupid. - He's gonna make the team, right? - Sounds like he is. - Okay. - But that's just a silly, silly way to... All you did was put a target on your back and everyone goes, how many catches does that dude have? He says he's unguardable. - 12 in one game? - No, his career. - I'm all for confidence, but when you get your opportunity, you gotta prove it on the field. I'm all for confidence. Cap, you cannot do this job as a football player, leaking confidence all over the field. You can't do it. - Cannot. - Because we've seen what that looks like. - Correct. - For our young listeners and viewers, when we were watching the best-bearers teams that we ever saw in the '80s, you saw quarterbacks leaking confidence all over a total field. Oh my God, here comes Wilbur Marshall. Oh my God, here comes Mongo. Oh my God, here comes HAMP. You saw the confidence leaking like, man, I can't do anything with this defense. Where I'm a professional, but they're way better than I am. - Wales Jones? Listen, be confident, pound your chest, but you have to do something. - Agreed. - I didn't like the draft pick at the time, and he gets a mic in his beak, and he talks about how unguardably he is. Okay, we're gonna see. Gotta find out, won't we? - Well, you better be. - Because we haven't seen it so far. - You better be. - That reeks of Justin Fields and the game being really slow to him. That's that, that-- - Yeah. - It's a tough thing to say, because you better prove it. What was the, remember in what was the name of them? Any given Sunday? When they asked Steeman Willie Beeman before he got some humility and became a star, yeah, I got that invisible juice. Remember that? - Yes, yes. - And the next thing you know, he's getting sacked all over the place. Hey, Beeman, what happened to that invisible juice? - Then they get a fist fight in the showers. - Yeah. - Great scene. - That's it, man. That's it. - Like, don't, don't put a target on your back. - These guys are like closers, man. Like pretend like the last season didn't happen. It happened. I want to see if he's get some Cordeiro Patterson-like plays. And here's the thing, we don't know what Waldron has in his bag. We can, we see the LinkedIn resume. We see that. But just as far as what set of plays do you have to make it easier for Caleb Williams? Is that one of them? The end of rounds to Vales Jones? Don't know. - Don't you feel like the end of rounds are going to be for Tyler Scott with how he's been used in camp? Like he seems to be making more of the in-road. I feel like Vales is on this roster. It's solely because the kickoff rules are changed and there'll be more returns. I don't really think he's going to break into getting a ton of receiving snaps. - Well, he's already, at best, he's the fifth receiver. Cause Tyler Scott said a good camp. And then the, the big three. - So what's he going to run three routes a game? Like somebody gets hurt. Maybe Vales gets involved, but I don't, he's not going to be running a bunch of routes. - I would hate to be Adam Amine doing the play-by-play for the preseason games. And Vales Jones gets a kick and he's tackled at the 21 yard line. - There he is, the unguardable Vales Jones down at the 21. We first intend for the Bears. - Wow. - It's like, that's what he said, cap. - He did. Dallas, Texas, listening on the ESPN Chicago App. Here's Justin on cap and Jay Hood. Justin, good morning. - Hey, good morning, Jim, how's everything going? - We're good, man. How are you? - Good, good. I'm just curious, cap, hoodie. Did I hear you guys say that Caleb isn't going to be playing in this first game? - They have not announced it, but what I'm hearing is he's not going to play. - Why is that? I mean, isn't the object to be getting as many reps as possible? - Well, they're not going to play all the other first team guys. So is it important that he gets reps with a bunch of guys who may not even be on the team? - Well, I'm just saying because, you know, at one point we had this issue of the different regime when they were saying their preseason didn't really matter and then we see how that turned out. - Well, they're saying that he is going to play in the preseason. They've already made that clear. - Okay. - But the Hall of Fame game, I think the last starting quarterback to play was Teddy Bridgewater in 2015. Like teams do not take this game serious. They haven't even been in camp for like in pads for what, less than a week. So yeah, again, they have not announced it but that's what I believe is going to happen when I'm hearing. - Now Justin, the way you lay it out is interesting why you ask that question because there are four preseason games and the time under tradition of the preseason is you play your starters in the first, second and third game and in the fourth game you don't see anybody. You just see backups. In this situation, it makes me wonder how often we will see Caleb Williams in the ones. Maybe that starts in preseason game number two and number three, but then the fourth is usually irrelevant. I wonder what we see him in the fourth preseason game against Kansas City. I don't know how that works out. - I guess that depends how the first numbers, you said two and three? - Yeah. - Two and three go. If he plays really, really well and the offense looks, wow, after the third one, they look really good. He probably doesn't play. Why would you take a chance at getting a injured? - Okay, I was just saying, I feel like he should get as many reps as possible. I know, and I also heard that you say that a lot of the, basically a lot of events aren't playing. Well, he's not a veteran. If technically, if you wanted to say that then, and I'm not saying in no way fashion that he's better, but Tyson Vaygen would be the veteran. But I get what you guys are saying is, if Tyson is clearly the backup, that's A, B, you want to put Caleb out there and not have his first team offensive line in front of him, and then he gets hit and you'd be the first guy and rightly so, call it in, goin'. Okay, our quarterback got hurt. We put him out there with a suspect offensive line. - Fair enough, fair enough. - You're the man. - Yeah, but I understand the point. I understand why I call because we don't want to go back to the NAGU administration in which you put your quarterback under glass, and then you completely look flat, right? I mean, 'cause we saw that before. - Exactly, so I get the call, I understand. - Well, thank you, Jim, and I appreciate it. Greatly appreciate it. I'm lookin' forward to the season. Love both of you guys. Love both of you. - Love you. Keep the fragrances flowin', baby. - And don't forget, Bears Friday, Friday morning, as we review the Bears and the Texans. - Don't do it. - What? What I mean, what do you mean? We're the home of the Bears. - Yeah, okay. - We are. - You're off, you're off, Friday? - You're gonna be here? - Up here, no. Yeah, I will. - Yeah, what do you mean? You're not sure? All I know is that Cap is gonna be exciting just to see football out there, just to see the guys out there playin'. That's all. - Yeah. - That's what I'm lookin' forward to seein'. Well, we get an, this is an ESPN game, so okay, so this is gonna be interesting to see some of the guys out there. The Bill's game is gonna be even more interesting, 'cause I think that's, we see Cal William start there on the road. - That's different. - Tough. - That's different. And then who do you have? Cincinnati? - At home? - And then the Chiefs. - At Kansas City. - So, one of the- - Me, the perfect way it goes down is, he doesn't play Thursday. They keep practicing, patties, blah, blah, blah. - Everybody's healthy, God willing. He starts at Buffalo, plays into the second quarter. The third game he plays into the second quarter, and the fourth game he doesn't play. And the offense looks good. - Lion's share of the time at home against the Bengals, possibly on the 17th. - Yeah, I don't know about Lion's share, but certainly well into the second quarter. Like a full drive into the second quarter. - Lion's share of the snaps that he's allotted will be in that Cincinnati game for this preseason. The possibility, all that stuff on the road for God's sake, get it at home. If you don't get booed, booed, get booed at home. First three and out. We want Beijing, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap. - Oh no, they would be going, we want fields. Yeah. - You know that cult is having their meetings, and they are all in- - When he struggles, we're gonna turn the heat up. - That's what, total literal Pennsylvania. That's where you'll find your savior. - That's exactly right. All right, coming up, the road to 24 is paved in losses and gold for the Chicago White Sox. We'll talk about it, coming up next. Cap and Jhood, weekday morning seven to 10. (upbeat music) - You're listening to Cap and Jhood. Follow the show on Instagram @thecatman and @igjhood. This is ESP at Chicago. Chicago's home for sports. - Number 24. Number 24. Number 24. Number 24. Number 24. (upbeat music) - Indeed, the road to 24 continues for the Chicago White Sox. Here on the home of the White Sox, ESPN 1000. Cap on the road to 24. The Sox have lost on 15 games in a row. This morning, everybody, they're 27 and 82. 27 and 82. - Okay. - I watched it last night and I was gonna call you, but I didn't want to bother you, but I knew you were up watching. - Oh yeah. - That's what I love about my partner. - Don't know he's listening to me, but he absolutely is always locked in at everything. - I'm gonna need you to stop those falsehoods right now. The audience knows, here's the thing. You could say stuff, the audience knows though. They're watching and listening. They know exactly what's going on around here, but they know that I'm listening, you know why? 'Cause when you stop talking, I start talking. And vice versa, it's symmetry. The idea that I don't listen is a falsehood. Stop lying to the audience, go ahead. - So watching that game five to two, my friend, the great Ryan McGuffey, calls me. - Yes. - Hey, how you been? - Good, I'm doing great, how you been? - He said plus 950, if you bet the Royals right now, five to two, starting the eight. - Yep. - Plus 950. And I went, oh God, this will be the one game. I'll throw a hundred dollars on it to win 950, and the Sox will close it out. He's like, they don't have Copac. The Royals need the win, they're in the hunt. Okay. And I think they got the first out. I could've clicked on it, it might've gone over a plus a thousand. And then, bam, home run. Five, three, bam, home run, five, four. Uh oh. They get a walk, a hit by pitch, I think. A hit all mixed in there. For mean, made and out. Here comes Bobby Whit Jr. He's already got three hits. - And then Bobby Whit comes to the plate. You see what happens, right? Big time Homer. - Bobby Whit Jr. - Yeah. - And a left hand, game, get up and attendees, bam. Go runs! - Brad Slab, Bobby Whit Jr, in a six run eighth inning. - Six run eighth inning, and I mean-- - Number 24. - I'm like, idiot, idiot, why would you not bet it? - We are on the way, boys. We are on the way. The eighth inning last night, I'm like, boy, it's gonna end on 14 again. This rode the 24-bit over on 14 again, brutal. - And then Bobby Whit Jr. delivers. - You knew it was gone. The color analyst for the Royals knew it was gone, but before the pitch was made, listen. - Number 24. - That could have been a fly-off. He knew it was a room service fastball. - I was so mad at myself. - If they break the record for an aptitude with 24 straight losses, which I now find to be maybe the most compelling thing going on right now, even with Bears Camp, I'm like locked in. I'm White Sox baseball every night to see if they can pull this off. That's the moment. That's the moment of the streak. Is Bobby Whit Jr. slider down and away? Goodbye. - Dad, how do you allow the cobwebs to just be all over the walls? There's newspapers are stacked on the porch. The mail has been picked up in two weeks. You gotta get some sunshine, go outside. That's White Sox baseball. The dishes are dirty, mom. I'll come over and help you clean it up. That's White Sox baseball cap. The loved one sitting in there in squalor. You have a nice home, but it's dirty on the inside. You haven't cleaned it. That's Jerry right now. That's Jerry. - Pizza boxes everywhere. - Dad, come on, you gotta clean up the paint. - I'm watching the TV. Doesn't matter, the bin hasn't been made. That's what's happening at 35th and Beck right now. That's what it is. - I mean, this place needs a brush. I'm sorry, a broom and it needs a mop. Can it needs a fresh coat of paint? All of it, Cap. You've seen it. - I have. - You've seen it. You go in there and like, what the hell happened in here? It looks like a tornado hit it. - And Jerry doesn't care, Cap. Could you imagine presiding over this? - No. - You're one of the faces of the owners in Major League Baseball, Cap. When you walk in those meetings, ah, here comes Jerry. - Hey, I hear Jerry doesn't have it anymore. 38 and a half games behind. - How you doing, Jerry? (laughing) - Andrew Friedman, good to see you. He has the Brooklyn Dodgers. - Cap, that's not good. I'm not speaking ill of the dead. I'm speaking ill of a dead franchise. That's what I'm doing. I could never walk in a room like that. You could not walk in a room like that. - No, I could not. - You? Oh my God. - I couldn't do it. - Cap, you're in the owners meetings. - I couldn't do it. - I could not walk in and have all those guys look at me. - Go. That dude's team is, what are they? 27 and 82? - 27, 82, 15 game losing streak. You're in the owners meetings. You and Dr. Bruce Kapler. Here come the Kapler boys. (laughing) They're the worst. Good to see you, David. Yeah, Bruce, good. Please, have a seat. (laughing) - I mean, laugh that, Cap. - Right, like how do you do that? Like what? - Again, you own how you want to own. I couldn't do it. - Why have a team? What's the point? Isn't the point of the deal to try and compete and win? - I just wouldn't want that perception. You know, I don't care about perception, but when it comes to ownership and it's my money, I couldn't do it. See, I couldn't walk in. That'd be so embarrassing. - Oh, do you think about it this way? Yesterday, 62 days remaining until the final day of the Major League season. On July 29th, the White Sox officially clinched a losing season. On July 29th. - Think about clinched the wrong way. - If they won every game the rest of the year, they would not be above 500. (laughing) July 29th, they clinched a losing season. - Jim, how bad is that? - It's very bad, but they need to do an event. They need to do a concert. - I would agree. - I'm type Kiefer Sutherland is a musician. Bring him in for the Crosstown series on the road the 24. Let's have Kiefer Sutherland play a concert at the rate. - What's your boy, Keith Urban? (laughing) - Wow, wow. (laughing) - Bring him in, man. - He's got a flush in there. - I don't like our team. - I think right now I feel like, I'm not ready to go through the (beep) and just try to bring out. - You never know. - Then how I feel about this ball going on. - He's gonna flush him. (upbeat music) - He's gonna flush him. - You ready, Cap? - Bring it on. - The number of wins in the last two weeks, the American League All-Stars won the White Sox zero. You're a White Sox stat of the day. - I'm sure to save the great G8 Kuda. - Oh no! We shot again. - John Greenberg had the best one the other day. If you took away the 15 game and the 14 game losing streak, if you took them both away, they'd still have the worst record in baseball. - No question. - Worst that we've ever seen. - They're going to go down as the worst team in the history of the sport. How do you walk into an owner's meeting or a board of governors meeting and go, "Hey, how you doing?" Well, as you just said, how do you do that? - You're the guy that was a face of the lockout strike 94. Hey, we're gonna win this thing. Jerry, right up front, he was one of the faces of it. Nope, you are terrible. These young hot shot owners that just got into the game, the Rangers, they're like, "Hey, you know, look at this." - The Mets, they just got Cohen comes in there. Jerry Ryan's not. The great Jerry Ryan's not. How are you? (laughing) - You're old. Get out. - We aren't even tracking the 03 Tigers anymore. Like the 1962 New York Mets that lost 120 games. The worst modern era baseball team in history, but didn't play 162 'cause of rain outs. Through 109 games, they were two games better than the White Sox. White Sox are 27 and 82. The 62 Mets were 29 and 80. - Yeah. You're on pace to be worse than that team. And that was the first year that the Mets were ever in Major League Baseball. - At the eye, expansion. So it's almost forgivable, Cap. The Mets, when I first, I mean, you get it, right? I mean, expansion was Frank Harvard on that team. Like they were just piecing it together in '62. - Yeah. - What is this? - It's brutal. - Absolutely brutal. - Small market. So small market Kansas City, small market Minnesota, small market Cleveland, and Detroit ahead of you. And you're in Chicago, but you're a baseball guy. If you're a baseball guy, if it's basketball, all right, son, Michael, you take care of that. I'm gonna concentrate on the baseball. That's what you're concentrating on? That's an embarrassment. And by the way, this is not casting any aspersions on the man and everything that he's done. What we're talking about is his baseball team. That's not right. - He has one ace up his sleeve though. - What's that? - When he goes to the only meeting, it's still five teams that haven't won the World Series. (laughing) (laughing) - You know what I mean? (laughing) - Hey, Jerry, owner, Seattle Mariners. (laughing) - Nate, what are you doing? (laughing) - What? - Who else has it won? - Yeah, nobody else has it. - Name the teams that haven't won. - Exposed. - Tampa? - Yep. - The Mariner. Who else? - Ah, the Rocky. - Yep, Rocky's? - The Rockies, that's three. - Milwaukee? - Milwaukee, that's four. - Ah, Milwaukee's still waiting. And there's one more. - Padres. - The Padres. - San Diego Padres. - There's five. There's five. - So happy to be at it. - Still, the owner of the Padres race. - Hi, Jerry. - Yeah, they won the World Series. - Right. - They're gonna look at it. So five, Connecticut gave me the ball. - Hey, I'm the new owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Oh, you got that skeins kid, but you don't have one of these. - Yeah, they won the World Series. - Great. - Yeah, but you're teams in the basement. So far in the basement, we can't find you. With a search party, you're horrible. Baseball guy, huh, Jerry? - It's not right, Cap. - It's not. - For me and Dr. Bruce, and Ryan McGuffian, all the rest that have lived and died with this team, mostly died, but lived and died with this team. - Can you tell me other than 2005, what year the White Sox won their last playoff series? Just a playoff series. - Blackout? - That was a one off game. - That was a one off game, no, a series. (car engine roaring) - That's time they won a series in the playoffs. - Yeah. - Whew. - Other than '05 when they won the World Series. - Don't know. - That'd be 1917. (car engine roaring) - I heard that sat and it took my breath away. I'm like, wait a second, wait a second. The Cubs weren't that inept. They won a series in '03. - That's correct. - They beat the Braves to get to the Marlin before they gagged it away. - I thought the answer was-- - And in '15, the Cubs won over the Cardinal before they lost to the Met. - Yeah, I remember. - The White Sox have never won a series. It's 1917, other than the year they won the World Series, which came out of nowhere. - Even worse, the road to '24 continues tonight as the White Sox take on the royals at 6.30 tonight. - I'm now home with the White Sox. ESPN 1,000. - Number 24. Here's to Days Headline. Headline with Captain Jay Hood. - Well, we are hearing that the White Sox are trying to get a deal done with Garrett Crochet today. We will see if that happens. Does he go to the Dodgers? Does he go to the Orioles? Does he go to the Astros? Does he go to the Braves? Those are the names both frequently being linked to the Sox. It appears Luis Robert Jr. will not be traded. No word if the Cubs will make any more deals by starting James' Italian last night. It seems as though he will not be going anywhere, but that remains to be seen deadline 5 p.m. this afternoon. Sox and royals tonight. Sox blew a 5-2 lead in the eighth last night, lost eight to five on a Bobby Whit Jr. Grant Slammy at four hits for RBI's in the game. Cubs were impotent. They were horrible offensively, lost 7-1 to the Reds. Two teams back at it again tonight. And the Bears back at practice right now at Hallis Hall. We'll find out from that Iber Flus after practice if Caleb Williams will play in Thursday's Hall of Fame game. But what we're hearing is, "Bagent will be your guy." Jay Boor! [MUSIC PLAYING] Captain Jay Hood, our back. Oh, Captain Jay Hood, big fan, man. [MUSIC PLAYING] Bop, bop, bop, bop. Watch out, fellas. Sergeant Kaggle's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 and streaming on ESPN Chicago. And don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel. The Captain Jay Hood show has its own YouTube channel. Make sure you hit that subscribe button where you miss nothing. Even the little chunks is Kappa. Tell you the little chunks that we have there. I had a long, warm conversation on YouTube. Yeah, the little chunks are just like little snippets from the show. Highlights. Yes, I learned from you the little chunks he called them. I did. And that's exactly what they are. They're chunks of sound and video. That's correct. So I remember us talking about Michelle Smallman from Unsportsmanlike 5 to 7 before we come on every day here on ESPN 1000. Michelle Smallman, Evan Cohen, Chris Canty. Yeah, I'm a little angry with Michelle right now, but that's OK. Well, what happened there? Well, she was denigrating the Chicago Bears. I thought piling on, uncalled for shots from an uninformed nature because she's not at practice. She's there with, hey, Canty and Cohen. So I decided to ban her from the show. Banter. How long has it been, you say 30 days? 30 days. You banned her from the program. Our program. Yes. So, Cap, there's a response from Michelle Smallman. Really? Michelle Smallman on Sportsmanlike, her response to the Cap and Jay Hood show ban. Cap and Jay Hood, ESPN 1000 in Chicago. I don't want to create a divide there, but I'm about to after I tell you that this is on Sportsmanlike with Evan Canty and Michelle coming to you live from the seaport brought to you by Chase. So as someone that always has your back smalls, I address this. Thank you. And I was told Jay Hood is wiping his hands clean of this. Did Cap was the one to ban you? Not Jay Hood. Schism with that show now. Cap versus Jay Hood on the smallest ban. Jay Hood doesn't want to ban you. But Cap does. I also think that Cap and CC have a separate relationship all together and they are friends. So I don't know now what side are you on on this? 'Cause your friends are both these guys and now I'm trying to separate that. Don't put me in an awkward position. Don't do that. Don't do that. Ooh. You didn't have to bring me into there. Oh, yeah, I did. No, you didn't. You didn't. You could have just let it alone. Oh, all of us. You could have just let it alone. Is what I said, that egregious, that it could take the Bears a year to figure it out. We just assume that because of all the things around Caleb Williams that he's gonna have immediate success, is that fair to put on him? Is that a fair expectation? I don't know. Maybe it's gonna take him a while to figure it out. I don't think that that's an outrageous take. I don't think it's ban worthy. Not an outrageous take, but fair is a place where the judge pigs at. Whether or not his fair is irrelevant to the conversation. Caleb Williams better show that he is that dude. 'Cause the Chicago Bears fans ain't gonna be patient. And you know there's a contingent of Bears fans that would have loved to auction the number one overall pick and keep Justin Fields as their quarterback. That's true. It won't be wrong, but there are a lot of fans out there that felt that way. I just think here's what you should do. And I could do some reaching out on your behalf. Okay. I think you go on all the other shows on ESPN 1000 in Chicago. Just be great on those shows. And you refuse to go on with them for 60 days. You're actually banning them for your services. And then I double my ban? 'Cause my ban, that they put on me-- No, you go on the waterline, Sylvia. You go on climbing your carb-doll black everybody. I feel like that's gonna escalate it though. I don't think it's gonna bring both sides close together. Well, then J-hood's mad at cabs. I think it'll end up being like the Jamar Chase bagels negotiating. It's not gonna bring them closer together. They're just gonna become more dug-in. So we not a lot to have cap or J-hood on the show, then? Ooh, do I then ban them? They ban me, okay. Then I'm gonna ban you right back. A double ban? Or we have one of-- We have them on. But you don't ask a question. You just sit out. You protest. No, no. I don't think it's-- Is a complete unsportsman-like boycott of cap and J-hood? Well, aren't we doing-- Like, I mean, you're not gonna go on their show. That means that we can-- I can't. I'm banned. I have an idea. That means that we can't go on their show either, right? Yeah, because we are one family. It has to be solid. So, you know, isn't there a day-- Put me in a very awkward spot, though. Isn't there a day coming up where we have, like, we're doing-- or aren't we doing, like, two a days? We're putting-- Yeah, so starting next week, we started two a days, yep. So when we do the bears-- Carmen, Yurco, Sylvie, Waddle, Abdullah, Black, Peggy, Dion, Pat the designer, everybody involved in that station on the air-- Well, come on with us, except for cap and J-hood. They want to be in smalls. Oh, wow, don't mess with us. Oh, wow, look out. That's right, yeah, that's right. Here's David Kaplan. [LAUGHING] The band stands. And my relationship with Chris Canty supersedes that he has to work with Michelle every day. Canty and I are tight. Never met, but we've spoken on the phone a lot. He's got relatives here in Chicago. Canty's my guy. And Evan and I have an excellent relationship. I'm just a little down on smalls right now. Oh, the negative hue she's putting around the bears is going to come back to bite her. It's not going to look good. When bears are off to a really solid start and Caleb's rolling, she's like, oh, wow, he came along quicker than we all thought. Not we all, you. Well, I've known Michelle for a long time, but there's no schism on the program. Cap calls for the band. Band stands. You don't hear Jimmy Joe Pesci on the show? You do not. What do you call for the band? We enforce said band. Michelle, I know Michelle probably longer than the other two than Evan and Chris Canty. But I mean, here's the thing. If we're banned on their show, that's OK. We go on the Better Freddy and Harry show in the afternoon. Wow. Coming up, we full half of that. We are welcome on the Coleman and Harry Douglas program. Bring it on. It's fine. No problem at all. We're on game night. We're welcome there, too. There you go. A little game night soul, if you wear a school boy Q. Be gone there, too? Or we'll just go on up in Milwaukee with Jen, Gabe, and Chewie and Amber and Ian, if you will. Or ESPN Madison. I've done that show many times. Or even the BRUST radio experience. Yay. I'm from the ESPN Milwaukee. But we're banned on the two of days, banned. OK. OK. Glad that they had the conversation, Cap. But she's not happy with you. You come at the King's, Michelle. You best not miss. The Captain Jay Hood Cut of the Day is right around the corner. Chicago's Home for Sports. Follow Chicago's Home for Sports on Twitch at ESPN 1000 Chicago. Captain Jay Hood are back on Chicago's Home for Sports. ESPN Chicago. Now time for the Captain Jay Hood Cut of the Day. That would be brought to you by Chicago Cut. Stakehouse. That's David Flauman, Matt Nurse. Awesome. Awesome restaurant on the Sal North side of the Chicago River Classic Cut of the Day. Jable. Yes, it's boring. But it's a sport. Oh. Whatever. It's not boring. OK, then you're boring. All right, Pat. And if you are 60 or older, you should be able to get up to a standing position, sit back down, get up and get 12 to 15 times in 30 seconds, less than age 60, 17 times. I did 25 in 30 seconds. Yeah, I mean, that was not a contest for you at all. I said before I said, you know, this is-- you're just working out because it'd be easy to get in and out of the chair in 30 seconds. Now listen, I tried it. After you were done, I sat there, got up one time, sat down, and fell asleep. [MUSIC PLAYING] [LAUGHTER] So that's a problem. So that was super cool. Good test. It's in the New York Times. Everyone should take it. And get you all, folks. The classic cut of the day. Brought to you by Chicago Cut Steak House. I'm going to say on the North side of the Chicago River. It is spectacular. J Moore, you know someone that's in the Olympics in Paris that's in the wrestling team, correct, for the US? Yes. He used to play for Oak Park in River Forest. And he's saying it's Kamal Bay. And he's in Paris right now. And he should be wrestling, I think, next week. Good. Super cool. So we have two wrestlers from Chicago, because Marigos was talking about the young lady wrestler from Chicago. So we got two of them. That's right. How about that? Out to Kamal and his family. Get him, Kamal. Mike is in Quincy on cap and Jhood. Mike, good morning. Good morning, guys. Kat, I just had a question for you, because you seem to be so sure that Caleb is going to be great. Now, for me, I hope that he's great, right? I thought Justin Fields was going to be great. We'll see how that turned out. Well, my question is, where are you putting your stock? Are you just putting your stock in that Caleb is going to be better than everybody else? Or that Caleb is just going to be better than what the schedule dictates? Because of the first 11 weeks, there's like four technically, but Jordan Love has one year of experience. I think the only other guys, they aren't rookies, or stuck in your guys, are T-law, Stafford, and Murray. Hang up and listen. So I believe that Caleb Williams will be the best quarterback to ever play for the Chicago Bears in the modern era. That's number one. Number two, look at the roster, Mike in Quincy. Look at the talent on the roster. They've upgraded in so many areas. They have a top five secondary. They've got a top 10 line backing core. Yes, their offensive line has got to prove that they can play at a much better level than they have, but they feel like it's emerging. We'll see. Their wide receiver room, best in the history of the franchise. So add it all up, along with a last play schedule. And I feel like the Bears are ready to take a step. You win 10, 11 ball games. Yeah. After you've done what you've done with three wins, the seven wins, it's time for the playoffs. And I think that Ryan Pauls would agree. That's the next step. The goals always win the Super Bowl cap. But again, you've got to be able to have incremental success to get there. Be a huge leap to have a deep run in the playoffs now. The point is, though, is that you are setting it up to four to be a perennial playoff team at the very minimum. Look, there's a lot of talent on this roster. Health is always an issue in the National Football League. And I don't know if we have enough depth yet. And that whole line. As Waddle has stated in tomorrow's a Waddle Wednesday, that whole line's got to take the next step. Well, thank you for listening and calling in and being part of the program here on Cap and Jhood. Our thanks to Che and Jay Morne, the other side of the glass. For Cap, I am Jhood. We'll do it tomorrow at seven with a Waddle Wednesday. Look forward to it. You have a great rest of your day. Weather looks good. So long, everybody. Take that fruit. Chicago. Chicago. You play dead, but you never bled. And scheduling, stealing the glass all caught up in his head.
