One open phone lines for you. Three, one, two, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our telephone number and cap everywhere you look. For this television, whether it's columns, blogs, everyone has a focus on the Chicago Bears. And here's what happens. When you're on hard knocks, not just being on hard knocks, I'm talking about being on hard knocks for the first time. The Bears were kicking and screaming for years, not us. We don't wanna be on hard knocks. We don't want all those extra cameras in here. We already got enough press. We've already got enough coverage. But here comes hard knocks. They're already there, by the way. We can't wait to see what happens. But I guess with the added spotlight, with the added spotlight that's out there right now, everyone is looking forward to seeing what this new look Bears team looks like. And there's so much optimism because of what the Bears have done the off season. - So everything I'm hearing from up there, there's more hard knocks people around than there are players. - Oh, 90 in camp, well. - They said it is unbelievable, but that the vibe at camp is off the charts. They've never seen it like this. I spoke to someone up there yesterday and he said, "You cannot imagine the difference in the offense "from Getsy/Fields to Caleb Williams Shane Waldron." And they said there was a play where Justin wasn't the best at processing in the pocket. Tremendous athlete, big arm. They said Caleb is staring down one of the linebackers, Tremaine Edmonds, staring him down. And he's salivating. I'm gonna pick this guy off. And all of a sudden out of nowhere, a rocket to the other side of the field and he hits DJ Moore right in front of a debug. Whoa, where'd that throw come from? They said his eyes are downfield at all times. At all times. He is trying to make sure he stays in the pocket, climbs said pocket and processes all this information. He said it's truly what a remarkable change and how their offense operates. He's gotta do it in the heat of battle in the NFL season. But boy, it looks like it's trending in the right direction. Well, here's the thing, that's good to hear because you'd rather hear that than the opposite. - Correct. - Imagine if that's Bryce Young in that spot who by the way was widely panned on social media. - He was walking in with his backpack. - Because people said, who's that little guy coming in there? Who's that middle school student? - That's what they say. Wow, there's the middle school student that bears traded to get Caleb Williams. - It's unfair, but again, when you walk in the room, or when you walk through the airport and you could ask Cap about it, Cap is always, even today he's got the scouting eyes on. Someone can walk down State and Lake and he could point him out and say, that guy played ball. Look at those traps, look at that guy, right? The old airport test. Someone walks through, he's like, who's that? When Bryce Young goes through the airport, it's like, oh, nice little kid must be going to summer camp. Take that. - Right, when you look, you'd bet with me, I'll go. - That was about six, six. Now he didn't play, look how he walks. - Jay Moore. - He's taking kids to work day. - He really was, I saw that. Compared to Caleb Williams, right? I was starting somewhere the other day. It's like, how tall is it? I mean, you might be without cleats six foot, but I mean, but his presence is six too. He looks strong, he looks tall, and looks strong. He looks different than his six, one and seven eighths. - Isn't all for heaven's sakes. - Sorry about that. - Clearin' out, Harry. - Hello, my baby, hello, my honey. - Oh my God. - All right, my gals. - Oh man. - Six, one and seven eighths. Isn't that what he measured in that, Indy? - I think so. - Six, one and seven eighths. So, he's not huge. He's not Justin Herbert out there. - Right. - But man, he's got big thighs, he's just strong. He's put together. - Yes. - His mama's got huge hands. - Thanks, Jerry. - Oh, this is good, huge hands, huge hands. But talk about optimism. Here's something that came out yesterday that Cap has not even mentioned on the air yet. And that is from our buddy, Joe Dejakimo. - Yep. - A super producer. He ever watched the Winnie City Bulls or the Chicago Dogs. He's right there behind the scenes doing things as a producer. He's our friend because I've worked with him and Cap has worked with him as well. - Yep, he's the best. - So, he's quote tweeting something from Clay Harbor who's put a video of Rich Eisen. I guess this is on his show yesterday. He says that the Bears to the NFC Championship game is a sleeper pick this season. And Joe Dejakimo says, "Well, let's say you." And then Cap's response at 1039 last night was this. Why do you think I already have a ticket on the Bears to win the NFC and the Super Bowl? Hmm, now that's interesting. You haven't brought that on the air yet. - I haven't. - But that's on Twitter. Would you like to explain your tweet? - Yeah, I bet them before the draft when I knew they were moving on from fields as the cult members were boiling over. I bet it because I knew they were moving on. I've told you this since last November, they're moving on. - Yeah. - No, they're not. - Yes, they did. And so I bet the Bears, I want to say it 45 to one to win it all. I think they're 22 to one. I'll pull the ticket up. 22 to one to win the NFC. - I don't think that's common knowledge until that came out. Did you want that to come out? - I think you could have saved this for the air, you know. - I could have, I just, I didn't even plan on it coming out. He just, I love Joe and he riled me up. (laughing) - I don't think, I think you could have saved that for the air. And but I saw it last night watching the cub, like what, he did what? You kept the ticket private from everybody. - I did. - Huh? So-- - And I don't have a ticket on Dallas. There's too much drama there. - Oh. - CD Lamb's not showing up today. - Right, that's not why you don't have a ticket. You don't have a ticket because your friends banned you from putting a ticket on Dallas. - Yeah, that's correct. - I can't do it. - Oh. - Can't do it. - It's not because you heard the, the learned thoughts of a Shay Norlanger or a job in hood. You had to look on the TV to find out what's going on. We told you, don't do it. And if you're just gonna just give your money away, just hand it to me. 'Cause that's what you'd be doing, pal. Just hand it to me. But I love that we have optimism about the, about the Chicago Bears. - It's amazing. Courtney Cronin's writing that they've moved from, you know, rebuild the contender status and every single person that I'm talking to who has been up in camp, works for the Bears, whatever it is. - Dude, you have no idea what the vibe is like here. It's totally different than anything we've seen. - It finally feels, says Courtney Cronin, like the team has the talent to move past the rebuilding stage and into the category of contenders. Well, because of everything that they've done, cap here in the off season, that's why you can consider them contenders. But again, what gives me a little bit of pause is how tough the division is. Because when we talked about the last couple of seasons with the Detroit Lions, we were wowed by how they were able to refurbish, kind of add new players to their roster for them to be a playoff contender, for them to be a Super Bowl contender, quite frankly, based on everything that they've done. It doesn't happen overnight. Look how long the Lions waited to be able to get to this position right now. And then of course, there's always the Green Bay Packers. The Green Bay Packers the same. Again, they have Jordan Love, they're waiting for him to come to camp. But again, a team that knows how to win. There's a ceiling that has success for years now, but they can be a contender in the NFC North. Then Albert Breyer, and we'll talk to Albert Breyer today on a special Wednesday appearance at 9/18. Albert told us, "Hey, I know that you're getting here "in Chicago and that you're happy about all the changes, "but don't forget about the Vikings." Now think about that. Now he set aside the quarterback. He's talking about all the other parts. Jefferson's the best wide receiver in the NFL. They've got a good enough defense. So they're gonna be hurt from as well. So that's why, even though I think we're excited about the next step for the Bears, it's in a very double tough division right now in the NFC North for the Bears. Look, that division might be the best in football. AFC North, NFC North, they're the two best. If I told you the Vikings had a surprisingly good season, you wouldn't be stunned. They drafted a first round quarterback. Sam Darnold's a decent journeyman, but they've got talent on that team. Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison and TJ Hockinson and Aaron Jones and Darrasaw just signed an extension on the Olin. Like they got dudes, dudes. So let's see how this, the whole thing shakes out 'cause I will put the Bears and their future up against any of them. - Yes, well, I don't get the Lions yet. Are you ready? I mean, that's gonna be tough. - The Lions are deservedly so the pick right now in that division and I completely understand it. But let's go. It's time to take a step here. - No question. And when you think about where the ball club was a couple of years ago and how difficult that was, you're pulling the Band-Aid off and saying, "Hey, I don't like the team that we have right now. "We're going to try to re-imagine the ball club "under Justin Fields." And again, in a major market, any market, but in particular, a major market like this cap, it's difficult to tell a fan base, "Hey, by the way, we're just gonna tear this all the way down." But you've gotta trust us in that we're going to be able to build this into a championship team because you know that's not guaranteed cap. That's hard to do. Cubs did it. Bears are trying to do this now. Hawks have done it. It's hard to be able to do that because the last thing that I want as a fan is to see your team just losing and losing on purpose. But it's for the greater good. On the other side of this, if we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and we can see the team, it will be a championship contender, I'm all for it. But it's hard in the moment though. It's difficult. 13, 14 losses in a row. I'm a Sox fan. I know what that's like. - It sucks. (laughs) - I know what it's like to have a string of L's. But in a football season, extending into another football season, we had that many L's, especially in the division. That's hard. So I want my just desserts afterwards, which is a perennial playoff team on its way to the Super Bowl. - Wow. - A perennial playoff team in the city of Chicago, Urico and Carmen were talking yesterday that the Bears, the last 28 games against the Packers are three and 25. - Okay. - Three and 25. - Yeah. - Like I knew we were horrible. But when you hear them, like incredulously give those numbers. It's like, what? I know the last time they beat 'em, it was Mitch clinched the division title in 18. 24/17 at Soldier Field, they beat Aaron Rodgers. And I know we haven't won since. So that's what, 10 straight, 19, 20, 21, 22, 25 times two, 10. But three and 25 is breathtaking. - It is. No team should have a stronghold on your ball club that long for over 28 games. Seriously. - I mean, that's unbelievable. - That's why it's time to be able to turn the page and do something different here, meaning to be competitive and win. I mean, it's just time. And if it's not now, then win. - It's exactly, they've done everything right, it seems. To put them themselves in a position to take a big step. The vibe is good. The players like playing for the coach. They got the new offensive coordinator and the new DC. Like think of last year, the nonsense. They lost 14 straight. Alan Williams, there's rumors of the FBI and all this other stuff. Who knows what was true? He's gone. Then the running backs coach, inappropriate, you're out. - Yeah. - It's like one thing after another. Maybe I lost 14 games in a row. And now here we are. Caleb Williams, Roma Dunesay, Keenan Allen. It's like, okay. - Well, the reason why that those are valid storylines that you bring up is because that's one of the reasons why I thought that the bear should have upgraded head coach at the particular time because of what you just laid out. What coach survives to coaches being removed? Not just fire cap, removed for conduct. - Correct. - And so from that standpoint, it's like, okay. You know what, not only are you making mistakes as a head coach, but you can't keep your own guys in line. Now again, it's out of his hands, but yet you're the head coach. It's your staff, right? It's not poll staff, it's not Mikaski's staff, it's your staff. And so because of that, I thought, okay, over his head as a head coach, over his head with his staff. All right, that'll be all. - Right. - But he has an opportunity here to change the narrative, to put that stuff behind him, so that way you and I can talk about, and everyone, he were Flus was here when he first got here. Oh my God, the Rocky Road. They were tanking to try to get to number one pick. They knocked it down twice by getting DJ Moore and now Caleb Williams. They're able to get high picks in the draft. Now this team is a contender. It'll be a footnote if they can find a way to be able to win games and be a perennial playoff team. The stuff you just laid out, we'll say, hey, remember back there'll be so far behind as a footnote. - Like if they go from 14 losses in a row, part of the two years ago and last year, and they win 10 or 11 ball games and go to the playoffs, even Flus is winning coach of the year, right? - I think that he would be a contender, yes. 'Cause everyone likes the new flavor. The new flavor is the Chicago Bears. - Right. - Hey, you got a new restaurant, open it up. Well, let's say, oh wow, the flavor of this place is unbelievable. Look at the aesthetics in this place. - What a vibe. - Nice and clean. Smells great, wow. That's the Chicago Bears. - Right. - They're the new team that's in the NFL. People are interested in them 'cause of hard knocks and all the things that they've done, I just think it's fascinating. Now it's all about winning. I love the good vibes. I love the good vibes, but now it's gotta be on the field cap. So glad to start with Tennessee. - Yeah. - Could you imagine if it was Green Bay? - I don't know, box like it was the other year. - I'd rather not. Let him just ease his way in. This is why this whole thing is unusual. The idea that the NFC North Division games are in mid November down, I'm not saying that these are soft touches early. I'm just saying that it means even more in November 'cause every single week now you got a battle 'cause it's division foes, Detroit, Minnesota, Green Bay. It's almost like his college years cap. Get those soft non-conference teams and then you go into the conference, here we go. Bell rings. - Right. - So remember, we played Cal State Northridge and pounded 'em. - Yeah. - And then whoever came in Western or some crappy team rolling here. - Oh, we're at Wisconsin on Saturday. - Ooh, that one didn't go well. - Who made the schedule cap? - All right, it's time we've got to take a break. - Come on. (laughing) - The captain's one to make those Northern Illinois schedules back in the day. - And then we get them at the Paul. - This is crazy. Then we're at Northwestern. - Yeah, I'm used. (laughing) - So the question we have in the table, Shayla's over the phone lines, 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our phone number. 'Cause you think it's time? - At ESPN Madison and ESPN Milwaukee, there is concern. Like, they're, first of all, they're concerned about George Love, you know, what he's gonna sign for. But also, it's not like they're quickening their boots, Joey, but from what I can hear, there's concern that the Bears can overtake them. I've heard some of that conjecture. - Can't cap. - Yes, sir. - Are you there? - I'm right here, buddy. - Last night, I went to Chicago Cut. - Uh-huh. - Yes. - It's a good place, my favorite spotter. - Thank you for dinner. - What'd I do? - Well, I met Matt and Dave, and Joey took this around the whole place, and I said, yeah, I talked to Captain Allen, and I'll put your bill on his tab. So if you ever need them, I'm like, okay, ma'am. And she's so right, she was so right. - The systems were so, it seems primitive, but they had a system in place that worked. - They did. - Right? - They didn't have computers, so I mean, they just had their way of doing things. - Correct. - Dad wrapping up all the bills, put it on there, paid, paid in full. - Right, so my mom would just see the bill. - Here's the electric bill, paid, check number 18, 664. - The whole thing on there. - $49.99. - Illinois Bell. - Right. - That's like, oh, okay, so it's wrapped up in like a rubber band around them. - Yeah. - That's a month's check, that's a stack. - Right, there's the main bill. There's the electric bill for the year. - All right, here we go. (laughing) - It's amazing. Now we just do everything on the computer so easy, right? - I was sitting waiting for my wife, I was in the car, she's in the store. I'm paying bills on my phone. - Yeah. - Like if, my dad would be like, what? (laughing) Yep. - Fort Hood, Texas, listening on the ESPN Chicago app here is Jim on Captain J. Hood. Hey, Jim, good morning. - What's up, Jim? - Hey, hey, guys. Hey, so I'm finally getting optimistic. I was one of these bears fans who was just tired of, let's just get a new quarterback in and be miserable for another four years. But this morning, I don't know if it's just 'cause I haven't even breakfast. I got low blood sugar or what, but hearing cats talk about Caleb Williams, big muscular thighs and big traps. I don't know, man, I'm excited. I am excited. - Yeah. Have you ever called us and said you weren't excited? - I may have. - I think you did. - I've called him a couple of times, but yeah, I've kind of, I'm tired of the same old thing, but I don't know, man, hearing how he's walking like a pro athlete, got the big thighs going, I don't know what it is, man, I'm pumped. - Now, are you in the military down there? - I am, yes sir. - God bless you, what do you do? - I'm a tank mechanic. - It's awesome. - Thank you for your service, man. We appreciate you. - Hey, we're out here representing Fort Hoodie. We out here. - Fort Hoodie, I love it. - Brother, thank you so much. Call again. - Hey, appreciate you, boys, have a good one. - Oh, you too. So, yes, apparently my fort's doing well. - A lot of that. - There in Texas. - Fort Hood. - I'll be there in this fall to check it out. Check out the surroundings. - That's it. - Fort Hood. - That's the guy that the fort's named after. (laughing) - So, as far as the giants are concerned, Cap, you know, they have their hard knocks, too. A little bit too much exposure. Do they realize that you could edit some of this stuff? A little bit too inside. I think it's a little too inside. It makes them look dumb. Shane in the giant, okay. Here's what we're gonna do, Sanquan. Go and get your thing, okay. You can get your own deal. Seriously? Not very smart. I don't, I think it's an expose on the team, or so anything else, to me. - Right. - Look at too much. - But it was not in training camp 'cause we got that honor here. And it's the draft, man. It's free agency. - We should explain this. So, Cap, hard knocks, the giants had a deal in place. Now, is it with the bears? Because the bears are part of this, and Harrison and neighbors are part of this as well. That was the first round of the draft. - Correct. - I don't know if the deal was agreed to, but they were discussing the parameters of the deal. If and only if, Harrison and neighbors were gone before six. - All right, listen to this from hard knocks. - I know where it's six. I'll put it up here if that works better for you. You know where it's six. Jane Daniels or Drake May, I think they're both gonna go two or three. New England's not gonna trade out of there, and I think they're taking Drake May. If those three quarterbacks are taken, we're gonna stay at six if Marvin Harrison or Malik neighbors are there. We're just gonna turn the card in high five, and we're gonna have a number one receiver. If those guys go four and five, we're always there. We like room, we're all fans of room. Chicago has been in contact with me. They're at nine, looking to come up to six. It would be, they have a third and a fourth round pick. And then we would give her back a fifth. If Chicago calls me and tells me they are coming up for a tackle, let's say it's Joel, we move back to nine. They go tackle, Tennessee's at seven. Everybody thinks they're taking a tackle. If those tackle tackle, you're sittin' at eight now. They don't have an outside back or a rush or a rush. They're probably taking Dallas turnover. They're probably taking Dallas turnover and a lot two from UCLA. So now you're at nine and you can't roll. Or if, let's say, somebody wanted to trade up, which we've talked to a lot of these teams back here and they're not real fired up, but say somebody traded up to eight and it took more, more hours. You're getting grown more about one of the two at nine and you're picking up a third and fourth round pick. This is only if neighbors in Harrison go forward five, which whole indications are if the Chargers stay, they're gonna take a tackle. And what ends up happening is, is that May goes to the Patriots. Harrison goes to Arizona to die. Joel Alt goes to the Chargers. Neighbors end up being with the Giants at six. Latham seven to the Tennessee Titans. Pennics is to the Atlanta Falcons the quarterback and then Roma didn't say at nine. - Right, so Paul's was, and remember, the Bears put it out where Paul's wanted to trade up 'cause how much he wanted Rome. And Ian Cunningham's like, it's 77% we're getting Rome. And Paul's like, I think the Giants take him. And they didn't, they took neighbors. And all of a sudden, he's sitting there at nine. - He's right there for you. - Right. - What else were you gonna do in that spot? - But you discuss a billion scenarios. - You heard that just in a 90 second clip. - Right. - They're just, 'cause it's not just you. It's like, what else is gonna happen? What other teams are gonna do? - Right. - They're just going through the litany of opportunities. Here's the one thing, Shay, that we knew. That Latham was going seven to Tennessee. - The offensive tackle. - Right, everybody be that. - Everybody be that. - If he was there, but he was gone. - So out of all the Shay, are you happy that you, what you got at three? 'Cause your name was involved in there too. - And he sounds like he's not gonna be the starter. It sounds like Jacobi Bursette's gonna be the starter in New England. - But 100% though, you're good with, 'cause we've talked about this, like Maze the Guy. - I've been over the moon since April, whenever the draft was, over the moon. I told, I've repeatedly said the Washington football team, not taking Drake May was one of the dumbest things done in this draft aside, like remove the Falcons taking Pennics. Just 'cause by process it didn't really make a lot of sense. The commander's taking Jayden Daniels instead of Drake May's probably the dumbest thing I saw in the draft. - Are you surprised that Drake May's not gonna start for the Patriots? - Not at all. - Opening day? - Not at all. - They'll get his time. - They'll slow roll him and they should. They're smart too. That team's horrible. - You'll get his time. But I just like the different scenarios that's going through Joe Shane and the rest of the Giants. The Bears keep calling. So, again, confirmed. Paul's wasn't just sitting there with the phone down. He was wheeling and dealing. - He was. - So, right there, confirmed from the Giants. Bears keep calling, okay, let's see what we're gonna do here. - Right, and he and Cunningham's telling Paul's, "Don't do this. "I think we're gonna get 'em at nine." 77%, they have all these analytics. - Yes, that's awesome. - And then the scene where you hear the ladies' voice in the background of the house all, Atlanta selects Michael Pennics Jr. C. Paul's like, "Oh my God, what the hell, oh my God." - Well, everybody, I mean, you heard in the Giants clip, they weren't expecting, they're like Atlanta, they're probably gonna take Dallas Turner, they don't have an outside linebacker. Everybody figured Dallas Turner's there for the Pickens Forum. - I still can't believe they took Pennics, man. - And then, Dunes, they had nine and Zach Wilson had 10. Three, one, two. (laughing) - Wow, who did go 10? - This is J.J. McCarthy. - Right. - As Zach Wilson. - Right. - And then Brock Bowers went like 11 or somewhere. - 13. - 13. - Yeah, for Sean, for Sean new, and then Bo Nix, and then Bowers to the Raiders. - There you go. - Oh, the Raiders got it. - Yeah, so that's, I just think that all that's fascinating. It's a little bit too much information, I think, but they put it out there, it's already done now, but it's pretty awesome. The guys that they want, the hope is that this means that you're gonna be in a great position moving forward. A perennial playoff team, that's what I want. - Let's go. - This hard knocks off season with the team, it's never going to happen again. - I firmly believe they're never, no team is gonna let this happen again, 'cause the Giants look so stupid. - It's an expose on the Giants, and how bad they are run by the tissues in the Maris, okay? It is. - They did get a hell of a football player. - That's fine. Just, people don't have to bear as being a bad organization. - Giants, Jets, huh. Not even close. A major league baseball insider says, "No shot did the Cubs should sell." We'll talk about this coming up next on Cappin' Jhood. (beeping) - Here's to Dave's headline, headline with Cappin' Jhood. - Rough night for Chicago baseball, again, as the White Sox fall to the Rangers, they give up a steal at home with four fundamentals, and they cannot get it done, and they lose, they'll get the Rangers again tonight, while the Cubs get shut out yet again. Leave 10 men on base, have multiple opportunities with the bases loaded. They had a chance in the eighth, they had a chance in the ninth, and they cannot get it done. Jamison Tyum was outstanding, seven and a third innings of one run baseball in the one run, scored off a Julian Merryweather, who allowed an inherited runner to score. Day game today at Wrigley, Cubs and Brewers to wrap up the series before a day off. Tomorrow, the Bears have completed four days of training camp, the vibe coming out of camp, outstanding Caleb Williams, and the offense have looked very good, as has the defense. - J more. - Biggie. - This is Cappin' Jhood. - They've been in the traffic commute, so you don't have to. (upbeat music) - It's a Waddle Wednesday, here on the Cappin' Jhood Morning Show, on ESPN 1000, and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app, with you till 10 o'clock, then Mike Greenberg comes in at 10, Carmen and Yerco 12 to three in the Waddle and Silly 236-30, Socks and Rangers, a 6-30 pregame right here, on the home of the White Sox ESPN 1000. On the recap, you can find that on YouTube, David Kaplan's YouTube channel, the recap, you got a chance to talk to a Major League Baseball insider, so one that you and I know very well. - So I did like 45 minutes with Jim Bowden yesterday, and I'll drop it on the channel this morning, but I asked J more, the awesome J more, to cut up some of the best stuff on the Cubs, as well as the White Sox, and I found Jim's perspective, 'cause it's so informed, 16 years, as a Major League GM, very intriguing. He would not be pursuing the deadline the way Jett is. He said, he thinks it's wrong. He said, you owe it to your players, your fans, the rest of the front office. As of yesterday, I think it's now four and a half, but they were three and a half back in the wildcard. He said, you don't have a good team, but you have outstanding starting pitching. bullpen's pitching better. He said, you get into a best of three. You're telling me with steel and Imanaga, you can't knock somebody out. That's what happened the last two years in the National League. - Thoughts from Jim Bowden on his overall take on the ball club. - Yeah, I mean, look, I think that Jett deserves to take the heat. I've been in that job for 16 years, and I experienced the same kind of years that he's having this year, and, you know, when you fail, you have to take the heat. You know, that's all part of the business. I think when you made the managerial change and you took David Ross out and you put Craig Council in and you kept the same team, and these are the results, then whose fall is it? I mean, I think it's pretty clear. And I think what's disturbing about this team from my perspective is your three and a half games out of the playoffs. And I don't care how many teams you have to jump, it's three and a half games, and you're throwing the towel and you're letting all the players in the city know you're throwing the towel and three and a half games out. And the reason I have a problem with that is because your pitching's really good. Your starters right now rank third in the National League and ERA, but you can't score runs. You have a terrible offense and you've done nothing about it. And I don't want to throw the towel and three and a half games out. Look, I know it's not a good team, but we learned David, Gordon, we learned last both season. If you win 100 games, you're one of the best teams in baseball, we're going to make you sit five days, we're going to put you in a position to get eliminated in round one, and we're going to have two wild card teams in the World Series. That's what we did last year. So, if that's what we're going to do, and that's our formula, I just want to get in, and if I can get in, and I can put Shodim and Aga on the mound, and I can put Javier Asada on the mound, and I can put Javier Asada, Jameson Tyone, just to you. I might run the table, so I'm not quitting. - Cap, you take a look at that starting pitching, and what you just said in a short series, if the Cubs are in the position and the playoffs, and you have those, that starting pitching, that'd be great, but you can't hit, and that's the problem. - Courtesy of a guy who I follow as do you at Chief Cub, Jim and Aga, 18 starts, he's 8-2 with a 2-8-6 ERA, and a 107 walks and hits per innings pitch. Tyone, 17 games started, 7-5 with a 2.96 ERA, with a 1.15 walk and hit per innings pitch. Justin Steele, 15 starts, record not good, 'cause they keep letting them down, 2-4, but just a 3-0-7 ERA and a 1.02 best on the staff, walk and hit per innings pitch, and I pulled this up from Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, did a really good article on Jamis Satyone. He said, as of now, the 32-0-8 has a 2.96 ERA, 78 strikeouts to 21 walks and a 100 and 1/3 innings. He has turned things up a notch the past eight, with a 2.47 ERA, 43 strikeouts to eight walks in 51 innings. And then he goes on to say this, after inking his four-year deal, Tyone initially got off to a rough start, admitting last year the pressure, the big contract in a new city may have contributed, but go back all the way to July 7 of 2023. He has a 3.16 ERA, 18 quality starts and 33 starts, 159 strikeouts to 42 walks, 191 innings pitch, and entering play last night, which he threw seven and a third of one run baseball, his ERA in that time frame, eighth best among all qualified major league pitchers. The only guys in front of him, Corbin Burns, Scooble in Detroit, Lugo Wheeler, Reagan's Logan Gilbert, and all star, and Tanner Bybie, that's it. So Jim, he said, unless you're gonna give me two five-year controllable young players that go right in my lineup, I'm not trading Jamis Satyone. He goes, 'cause you're gonna try to win next year. Good luck trying to replace him. - So what should Jed Hoyer say to Tom Ricketts about 2025? Find out next on Captain Jay Hood. - Captain Jay Hood, I'm back. - We are back, baby. We are back. We are back. - Classic. - On Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. - Yes. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1,000, and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app, we've got Shadow Notchon coming away to eight o'clock. So Waddle Wednesday will talk to Tommy coming up at 8.35 right here on the home for the Chicago Bears and Chicago White Sox, ESPN 1,000. So Jim Bolton was on the recap on Cap's YouTube channel, and again, Jim Bolton, long time, Joe Manger, Major League Baseball. He's hosting shows now on the MLB Network Radio. And Jim was asked, okay, so if you're Jed Hoyer, what should you say to the owner of the Chicago Cubs, Tom Ricketts about the 2025 season? Jim said-- - I think Jed has a really good answer that he's gonna be able to give the ownership, which I'm sure Tom Ricketts is already well aware, which is I have building up the farm system and we're not at that timetable yet. They're not here yet, but now they're knocking on the door, and I'm gonna be able to show you, Owen Casey to play in the outfield. I'm gonna bring up Cade Horton for you to see. Kelvin Alcontra is close, Matt Shaw is close. Here they come, and we're gonna play a little bit of checkbook baseball to get a free agent or two combined with the kids that are coming and it'll come together. And so his ability right now, what Jed is doing the way I view it, is he's buying one more year. By sitting here and throwing in the towel right now, I'm gonna sell, I'm gonna build for 25 and beyond. That's my sell point ownership. I'm gonna go get a piece for next year now. I'm gonna sign a free agent or two in the off season, and my kids will be ready at the same time and I'll be there. And if I'm Tom Ricketts, I'm like, okay, you know, you got one more year left, and you're gonna get it done, yeah, here we go. Now, having said that, if I'm Tom Ricketts, okay, you gotta show me, but I'm not extending you. I'm not giving you a new deal. That's a tough sell, all of it. - Oh, he's absolutely not gonna extend him, and I don't think Jed's under any illusion that he would. I did ask Jim, when we got done, will they have a tough time going into free agency? He said, absolutely not. He said, it's Chicago, you play in front of a packed house. He said, there are some players on the team. - Yeah, 100% guys wanna play there. - Cap, it goes back to our conversation about not exactly how much money you spend, but what are you spending it on? - No question. - That's the whole hallmark of Chicago Cubs baseball the last couple of seasons. Look at our payroll, look how impressive our payroll is. We haven't seen numbers like this in a while. Okay, but what do you have? - And he did say, he goes, do they have anyone on that team, not pitcher, position player, that you say he'll be an All-Star next year. I said, well I still believe in Suzuki. He said, okay, maybe. He said, everybody else on that team? He goes, you don't have one guy that you go, well we know we could count on that guy. - I mean, the Cubs are like the, going to the grocery store, buying $200 worth of groceries and unpacking it to put it right there in the shelves and put it on the counter. And you go, damn it, I think we missed some things. - What are we eating? - But we spent $200. But we still didn't get everything that we wanted. That's the Cubs. - That's a great analogy. I've never heard of put that way. That's a great analogy. - It's like, we got some things to work with here. Well, we can put it, but we didn't get the T-bone. - Right. - We didn't get the vegetables. - Yeah, oatmeal in there that'll keep for a while. - Got all these spices and stuff, all the spices and all the little things, you know, the average stuff you put in the refrigerator, but you didn't get the dinner. - Right. - What's the dinner for the Chicago Cubs? - Besides Bellinger. That's the thing. - Right. - And all I'm telling you is that with the way that boat laid it out, okay, you're trying to sell me with kids. It's the last year of my deal. You wanna tell me that these kids are gonna save my job? You sure about that? Because that's about development too now. - Well, that's why he said you're gonna have to play some of what he calls checkbook baseball. - Yeah. - He said you're gonna have to go out and get a star. Santander, Juan Soto. There's gonna be some guys out there that can upgrade your line up. But again, to go back to what he said earlier, he would not be in cell mode right now. He said, I'm not trading you Owen Casey or Kate Horton to go get a rental for this year. He goes, I get it. But he said, there are guys who give up middle level prospects that you can get from the Marlins and the Rockies and the White Sox. He said, 100% I would absolutely be adding on and trying to get in. - Well, Jack, you get more time? - My gut says he'll give him one more year. My gut says that Jed has a pretty good argument of running it back one more year. I think the front office in Toronto is under more pressure right now than the Cubs because they're doing the same thing the Cubs are. Exact same thing. We have a bad team. We have a bad lineup. You only have two everyday star players in Guerrero and Beshette and Beshette's hurt and not playing well. And the Toronto Blue Jays have a pretty good rotation, but they have nothing coming at all. They can't even point to what the Cubs are pointing to. And now instead of trading Guerrero and Beshette, which they're not gonna do, they're saying we're gonna try to run it back one more time. And normally it doesn't work. It just doesn't. But, you know, I think my feeling is for when I'm hearing is Tom will give Jed and Carter one more year. - Okay. Right now the Cubs are four and a half games behind because that loss against the Brewers yesterday. The Cubs are tied with the Reds, four and a half games behind. You're trying to leapfrog a pirate team that isn't very good, but they're better than the Cubs at this point in time. They're one and a half games behind in the wild card. They just don't have enough offense. Ask Paul schemes if they have enough offense. - Right. I asked Jim, I said if you could buy stock in the Cubs, not this year, but for the future, would you buy it? He said, nope. I'd buy in the Reds, the Brewers and the Pirates, not the Cubs. - Okay. - Right. - The Reds, interesting. I think that's because of their farm system and what else they got coming up. Is that the reason with the Reds? - Yeah. He just feels like they got to make a move to add a star plus they got to get healthy. They're missing like three key guys that have been out all year. - Well, the four and a half games behind as you get closer and closer to the deadline, that'll be all. You just held out hope that the Cubs, it's just not happening. And Jed knew it too. That's why he said it yesterday. He's like, yeah, we're not, we're done here. We're folding our cards. That's a shame. Because this year's will be different from last year and it's the same. And again, we can make the, you don't have to have the conversation now, but we can have the conversation of, was it justified to fire David Ross if you're getting the same results? The Ball Club is pretty much 500 from last year that this year. - He also believes that council is an elite manager. - We understand the point though. Nothing's changed. That's my point, like nothing's changed. - But a lot of us in town are like, come on, Craig shows some fire. - He said he's an elite manager. He said, this is a talent issue, not a managerial issue. - Okay, we will see, won't we? - Yeah. - Shout out, no shot in two minutes on Captain J. Hood.
