(upbeat music) - Good morning, Chicago. And welcome in to the Captain J. Good morning show. On ESPN 1000 and we are streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Remember the time that it was David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood together where we're on every day. Seven to 10 right here on Chicago's home for sports. We've got Che, we've got J. Moore, we've got you. Thanks so much for being with us. The Cubs won, they defeated the Milwaukee Brewers last night at Wrigley Field. But the story comes from Jett Hoyer, the president of the Chicago Cubs. Jett Hoyer named that we've heard around these parts for a long time. It was Theo and Jett, Theo and Jett. Like again, the combination that helped the Cubs revive the franchise to get them to the World Series and win the World Series. And for the first time in my lifetime, I believe in caps last time as well, we saw a run for the Chicago Cubs. Not just a one off, not 84, 89 in late 90s. You had a run, a sustained run for this Cubs team where the window was open for them to win a World Series, multiple World Series championships. Get one, probably should have been Moore, but Theo's gone. And now this is Jett's story, this is Jett's shop. And here you are in 2024, staring right down the barrel of another non playoff team, because as Cap mentioned, several weeks ago, there was just no run coming. When you are three and a half games out of the wildcard, we're on the precipice of getting to the ability to be able to trade, to stand pat, to trade, the bottom line is that the Cubs are just not good enough. And I'm going to tell you, I was wrong. I thought that this would be the year that the Cubs could turn it around and get to the playoffs, but small market Milwaukee has found their way to the top. This is without counsel. They've found their way to the top, and the Cubs have languished in the basement a lot this season, which is to my surprise. And the positive out of this cap is, as we've seen since July, bullpen's turned it around. The starting pitches have been solid, but the offense has been lackluster. And this is where we sit today, a team that is not buying or selling, but just kind of standing pat. So as I said to you earlier in the show, my question would be if I was Tom Ricketts, if I was Tom, Jet, I'd like to meet with you tomorrow. So sit down in the office at 9 a.m., come ready to go, bring me your plan. How are you fixing this? I gave you this year, almost 230 million. You got 80 some million coming off the books. You have a lot of payroll flexibility. How are we fixing this? Are you gonna sign Anthony Santander? Why would Baltimore not keep him? And I know Baltimore's financials are not what the Cubs' financials are, and they're gonna have to pay Corbin Burns. So maybe Santander hits the market. He's a stud. Okay. Why should we believe Dan's be Swanson's gonna be any better than what he was this year? 'Cause so far offensively, he's been horrible, horrible. How are you fixing your catching situation? You had Jan Gomes, we let him go. Tomos Nido, he's no good. Miguel Amaya, eh. Is he gonna take a step? Michael Bush made a good trade there, Jet. Nice job. Niko Horner, he's a solid player. He's not a star, he's not. Christopher Morel, he's 25, he makes no money, but is he gonna take a step? Or did we over-evaluate here? Is Pete Kromstrung a 186 hitter, or is he gonna show some life, other than with his glove and his feet? These are all valid questions. And as he answers them, Jet, how you getting a closer? Because we didn't sign Josh Hader, who's pitching well for Houston. He's got a .98 whip. He pitched for counsel. Now maybe Craig said I didn't want him, I don't know that answer. But those are a lot of the hard questions that Tom Ricketts has to ask. He cannot just say, oh well, we didn't do well. Good luck, Jet, let's go. There's gotta be some heart to heart there. And if he doesn't like the answers, then he's gotta make a change. He's gotta get the right answers here. You don't think that Jet's gonna get extended, do you? No. Not this year. He's going in the final year of his deal, if he's here. So he's gotta dance for a supper this upcoming offseason. Yeah, next year's team better perform. I, I, first of all, we gotta hear from Jet, and then we need to discuss this further. Yeah, well, I was gonna say, I think the next seven games, you know, obviously it matter. You know, certainly we saw what can happen last year. So you sort of never firmly put your feet, you know, a plan your feet. You know, you have to be able to be nimble. But I think where we are right now, I would say that, you know, moves only for 24. I think in less things, in less things change over the next week. I think we probably won't do a lot of moves that only help us, you know, for this year. If moves help us, you know, in 25 and beyond, I think we're still exceptionally well positioned. I think that's, well, our focus will be, but like just helping in 24, I think that probably won't be our focus unless things change dramatically. So what's your goal if you're the Chicago Cubs? The goal of this upcoming season, and this is just not my opinion, it's based on what Jed told us. - What do you mean by upcoming season? - This season or 25? Just so we're clear. - I think now and for the future. - Okay. - So I'll just say, when I say upcoming season, I mean 25, 'cause it looks like this one's over, right? - But you're three and a half back in the wild card. And again, I don't think they're a good team. - Yeah. - But you're only three and a half back here. - I guess when I say upcoming season, well, I'm only based on what Jed said. Jed has waved the white flags seemingly on this season. - You heard that? - I did. - That didn't sound like someone that says, we're gonna do everything we can to be able to compete in. And the next five or six days, we're gonna add on and go for this thing. I didn't hear that. I'm going back to what he told us in opening day. On opening day, he says, we're not there yet. That's a big bold statement, by the way, from a guy in a major market to say that we're not where we wanna be as a franchise. Not yet, as we said, you're correct. But what I would ask you is, is that no matter what happens with this Cubs team, you're adding on, you believe in your core, you're gonna stand pat, you'll just add a few pictures here or there. Are you still competing with the Braves? Are you still gonna be good enough against the Phillies? Are you still gonna be with the, here's the Mets. - The Dodgers? - The Mets took a huge step back and now they're in the wildcard race. What happened there? - Right. - They were dead in the water. - Dead. - Look at them now. - How much money do they cut off their payroll? - Shay, how much, the Mets were 325 or 350 last year? Where are they now? I'll bet you they've paired at least 60 million off their payroll. - No, they're at 340 this year. They're the highest payroll in baseball. - They're still up there? - Yeah. - Even though they should have payroll and so did the Padres. And Padres are half game back, by the way, in the wildcard tie with the Pirates. What I'm saying is, is that no matter what you do in the off season cap, what is your goal? Are you just trying to win the Central? Are you trying to be a contender in the National League? 'Cause I will just tell you that no matter what the Cubs do as far as adding on a closer or getting better bullpen help, that kind of thing, if you don't have multiple sluggers, you're not a real contender. Still, I'm talking about going through the hot stove league and we're at Wrigleyville doing a remote in 2025. If you have pretty much the same ball club, adding on just a bat and then some pitching, you're in the same spot. The idea that the Cardinals were dead, they were gonna fire everybody. And for them to be in this position right now and the Cubs are where they are, that's pretty deplorable. Again, based on the payroll, not just the payroll, but also who you're spending the money on. - Yeah, again, I keep going back to how are you fixing this? Unless you get internal improvement that we don't know if they can get. - As is, you don't have enough to even get to the playoffs next year. I'm talking about your main core players. - Right. - Based on how your offense has played, you do not. - So what are you gonna do about it? If you're Jad or if you're Tom Ricketts? - I don't know how Jad answers that question. - And that's our cash payroll, 310 this year. - But you gotta look at tax payroll 'cause that's what they're actually going to pay this year. - Yeah, they're gonna have to pay 90 million in tax. - They're in 342. And that's where the Dodgers, 'cause we always cite, they're getting out of so much, they're second in the league at 329. - You're in baseball hell, congratulations. - You're in a tough spot here. - I'm just saying, like, if you have underachieving bats and we've already cited earlier in the show, how good the bullpen has actually been in July. I actually have turned it around. - Started, yeah, over the last 29 games or so, I have those numbers here. - Yeah. - The Cubs bullpen, this is Chris Campk over the last 21 games. 1.13 is the ERA, over 72 innings pitched. 70 strikeouts to 20 walks, two home runs, 18 inherited runners, zero have scored. Zero. - Here's a deeper dive of the bullpen. - Since July 4, 51 and 2/3 innings pitched, 1.22 ERA, 1.01 whip, 24% K percentage, 7.4 walk percentage, 87.9% left on base percentage, and only two home runs allowed. So that's since July 4, I gave you the last 21 ball games. That's the whole month of July. So it's a little bigger sample, 72 innings pitched. Pretty freaking good. Mark Leiter Jr. sits coming off the IEL, 5 1/3 innings pitched, 11 Ks, no walks, no runs. So if you're a contending team, why would you not pick that guy up? - What I'm telling you is the hard truth. And the hard truth is, Cap, that when you have this many seasons of underachievement, you have to look elsewhere. You just have to. You have to cut the chord. You have to. - Cut the chord with? - With Jed Hoyer. - Now. - I'm just saying at the end of the season. Because look where the ball club is. Most teams would cut payroll and be like, okay, this isn't working. That means the core's not working. That means we have to be able to re-imagine the franchise. Not tear it down to the studs. You're not the white Sox. And that's what the white Sox will be doing here. They haven't done it all the way, but they will. What I'm saying for the Cubs is, is that you have to be able to re-tool what you have. Like again, I like Morrell. I like Suzuki. I like Ian Hap. He can't trade him. Somehow he got a no trade. That would be a conversation that would have like him. Come on now, seriously? Bush is your future. But then there's other pieces on the diamond that you wonder about. Can they help you? You got Dan's B Swanson at short stuff. I'm a dandy little glove man. Where's your offense? - Right. - Picker Armstrong fast, but just hemorrhaging at the plate. - 180-something. - Brother, he is in deep water. He can run fast though. - And I would play him every day. I've said that, just leave him out there. - Ninth hitter can go get him in the outfield. He can do that. But again, you want offense from your outfielders. And so what I'm telling you is, is that it feels like the Cubs are stuck. I don't think they're stuck as far as the president of baseball operations. I think they're stuck as far as their roster's concerned. That's what I would say. - And I think if I were the Cubs, frankly I'd root a con lawyer. Say, look, do what you can. Get us some pieces back. Do what you can with lighter and narrows and tie on. And Nico and maybe Cody Ballinger, if people get desperate, get us something back. - So you're completely blowing up the roster. - Blowing it up. - I'm trading Hector Neris and Nico Horner and potentially tie on, potentially Ballinger and Mark Leiter. I'm blowing up the roster. - Yes, you are. - But it's baseball. If there's a willingness to spend money, you have prospects. You can rebuild this quickly. This isn't a, I don't think any of the moves that I just named are long-term detrimental. I don't think you're destroying your future and doing those things. - You're certainly not the A's cap. Or you're not the white Sox. You're not that. But this is not a knee-jerk reaction when it comes to Jed Horner because there's a body of work you can look at and say this is not good enough. - You're definitely not good enough. I'm not trading all that he's trading. - I understand. - Would I trade Hector Neris? Absolutely. Would I trade Drew Smiley, Mark Leiter? - Yes. - It's an opinion. I mean, he's, but what Shay's talking about and I think some cup fans listening might be talking about is no, it's not blowing up. You don't want that. For the amount of revenue and revenue streams that's over at Clark and Addison, you don't wanna do that. You don't wanna go backwards as a franchise, but you need to be able to look at it with some fresh eyes. It, I think you're stuck right now as a franchise. For Milwaukee and St. Louis to be ahead, even the pirates in the mix cups can't be in this position. And someone's gotta be able to take default for that. - I wonder what he does if they beat Milwaukee again tonight or tomorrow. They take that series and then they take the series in Kansas City. What does he do? - Does he still white flag it? 'Cause maybe he sees what we see. Like the ball club is, you know, again, just middling and we'll never get better. - It would be, it'll be very, very interesting. - Because, you can't, you can't go. - Chris Gatz is gonna blow his thing up. - Sure. - Get it. - Sure. - Jed's not. But you can't go back to back seasons of, well, you know, we're at the final week, you know, let's see what happens. You can't do that. Either you are or you're not. You know it when you see a cap. We watch a baseball, baseball for a long time. You know it when you see it. - You're right. - They're not it. - They're not it. - And I was wrong. - They are not it. - I was wrong. - But am I giving away all that he's talking about? No. - Does that put you, does that top of you to the bottom? - Shay, if you make them any moves, you're not the Marlins if you make them any moves 'cause you still have a core there. - If you can spend some money next off season, no, I don't think you lose any of your young core. You're not moving off of any of your prospects that we expect to be on the roster next year. I think you can make those moves and still be a winner next year. - I don't know where you think you're getting starting pitching from. I'm not the big, you know this. You always were more of an Assad guy than I was. You let go of Ty own, Hendrix is gone. I don't know where you think you're getting all the starting pitching and you're gonna pay through the freaking nose to get anything that's out there. - You've got steel, you've got Assad, you've got shoda. We assume you'll eventually have Kate Horton. - You can win with that. - You need one starter, even if you move Ty own and lose Hendrix. - You need offense more than you need Corbin Burns in the off season. That's for damn sure. And I love Corbin Burns. I think we all do. If you watch baseball, you know how good he is. - Yeah, he's looking for 300 million. - You need more offense than Corbin Burns. That starting pitching to me is good enough to win. - Yes, Santander is the guy everyone's talking about who's out there. He's 29 years of age. Again, you have guys in the minors that are gonna have to get opportunities. Yeah, I'm not trading away all that Shay is, but some of the bullpen pieces in there. Yeah, go ahead. - This is a total separate conversation from Jed the person or the Jed who's candid with his comments and gives us time. We're just talking about the wins and losses. That's my only bottom line as a fan, wins and losses. What are you doing? You always have those great memories of the World Series Championship and the run. But at this point in time, you are stuck and someone needs to unstick the Cubs. That's where you are. That's the worst place to be too, by the way. If you're the White Sox and you're gonna continue to shed payroll and get rid of talent and go young, at least there's a direction, you're going down. Guaranteed rate, you're going down. The arrow's putting down, right? - Yeah, I'd have to see if I was sitting in Tom's seat. I'd have to see a plan. How are we fixing this? How is this gonna be any better next year? Is this just lighting candles and saying a novena? Is that what they call that? - Yes. - In your religion? - Novena? (laughing) - Well, we don't have novenas in Judaism. Is that how we're fixing it? We're lighting candles and saying a prayer that Dansby plays above his career norms. Are we saying Niko's gonna become a 300 hitter? A Pete Karm Strong's gonna suddenly hit 275 with 22 bombs? How's this getting fixed? - And if you're a counsel, whatever you think of Craig Counsel, he didn't come here for this. - He did not. - Because a lot of money he's making, he's fit to be tied. He's in the same spot that Ross was. And I didn't think Ross needed to be fired, but he's in the same situation. What bullpump arms do you want me to use? Not the bullpens better, but your offense is lousy, lousy. - Right. Totally agree. - I don't think that turns around next year unless you make some changes. It does not. Three, one, two, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our telephone number. Bears training camp continues. Some thoughts from Matt Iberfluze that you might have missed. Why are you giving him the evil eye? You've just tried to figure him out? - I was wondering how he carries that chair around. It doesn't even fold up. It's like a dining room chair. - Got some money there. The saws, got a nice little wad. - Got these in suit jackets and skinny mics. One little Sylvie 230 to 630 into White Sox baseballs that take on the Rangers. A 630 pregame right here on the home of the White Sox, ESPN 1000. - Sylvie sent a missive, as you call it. Trust me, as Cubs fans, we will never miss Tyel. We will never say, "Man, if only the Cubs "at Jamison Tyel was on this team, "we could win it all, trade high easily, "replaceable, get pieces to reshape this team." I understand where he's coming from. That's not like it's shohail-tony there. But someone has to cover those innings. Jordan Wicks is unproven. Now he's out for the rest of the year. ♪ Wicks, wicks, surprising to you ♪ Justin Steele, love him. Imanaga, big fan. Beyond those two, if you let go of Tyone, you let go of Hendrix, Jordan Wicks, I don't know what he's gonna be like coming back. I don't even know if he's any good. He's okay. He's, what do you have, an ERA in the fives, the fours? He's okay and he's done for the year. - He's a piece of the furniture at the Cubs. - Correct. So I said, Sylvie, someone has to cover those innings next year and I don't wanna pay through the nose to add a similar starter. We've already gotten through two years of him. He's actually having a solid year. Need to add offense and that will not come cheap. They have to spend big this off season. Whether that's Anthony Santander, who I love from Baltimore, whether that's Juan Soto, pie in the sky as that may be. He'll be out there. There are a bunch of good players available in free agency. So unless you're gonna give me something that is gonna dramatically impact my roster, I'm not moving him just to get the money off the books. I'm not. - Kate Horton, that's the answer. - He's out. - Yeah, I mean, not forever. - No, not forever, but me. - Kate Horton. - I don't know when he's coming back. - What was the, was the edict that he was okay to play the kids? - Well, that might be the case with some of the guys with the Cubs in 25, play young players. - But if that's the case and they don't win, Jed's gone. - Yep. - So he's gonna have to spend this off season to fix this thing. - That's a hard sell to the owner. I'm just telling you, that's a hard sell. - He gave him 230 this year. - Exactly. And what'd you do with it? - What are you gonna tell me? He's gonna cut it to 150? He's not, he's gonna spend again. - I'm just saying, Cap, you could say that. All I'm telling you is, is that, if I've given you 230 million and I don't have a star on it, you're gonna give me, how will I get a star? - You're gonna have to go get one. Santander is a star. Obviously, Juan Soto is a superstar. That's what's gonna have to happen. - And it comes down, once again, to, why would I come to Chicago? Where are they going? You just, you were just happy to have a John Lester to say, yeah, okay Theo, I'll just come and then all of a sudden things start to fall in the place. - Chicago and it's our hometown. I'm just saying that any free agent looks at this and just like, all right, it's full every night, but what's the likelihood that I can win a championship here? - Guys want to get paid. - They do. - More so than winning? Then that, what, that's a bad formula around here, isn't it? - Again. - Come on, Cap, look, come on, come on. - There have been plenty of good players that have signed here. It's a great place to play. They love playing at Riggly. They love that there's some day games. They take their kids to school. Like it's a pretty attractive lifestyle and that is a pretty damn good franchise to play for. Guys, if they come correct with the right contract, they can get their share of guys. I'm telling you. - It's funny, out of all that you just told me, you didn't say anything about winning. - I think they have a chance to take a chance. You were asking me what they would look at besides winning. - Yeah. - That's what I'm answering. - And what I'm telling you is, is that winning matters. Philadelphia, Atlanta. - They can't sign everybody. - Well, you gotta sign someone. That's what I'm asking. - The Rangers were horrible. They went and signed two guys. Why would they sign there? 'Cause they came correct with the contract and they turned it into a winner. - Increase their chances to win, then they-- - One of the angels ever won. And guys sign there all the time. Guys go where they're gonna get paid. They do. And the Cubs are gonna have the ability to pay whoever they want. Will they? Talk to Tom and Jet. - Yeah. I mean, that's one philosophy. And you can sign whomever. Bottom line is if you don't win and what's the point? You're spending money and just spinning your wheels at Clark and Addison. That matters, by the way. Whoever you sign, you hope that can increase your chances to win a championship. - No. - But remember the World Series Championship is the goal. - Right. - And that's why I'm telling you, you're gonna have the ability to go out and spend. They're gonna have to land those guys A, B, they're gonna have to win with them. That's the key. - I don't know what the attraction is to a free agent to come here. As far as the Chicago and Ashley Ball Club is concerned. Because stars, we get stars. Are you over there? Oh, absolutely, I'll come. Who's that for the Cubs? Because usually there's guys-- - Well, there's no bad teams ever gonna get a player in your world. And that's just flat out wrong. - Look at Major League Baseball. Tell me those, tell me those great pirates teams over the years that are able to get to the table and get that done. - But they don't go after the top free agents. - But Carlos Correa was a free agent. He signed with the Minnesota Freakin' Twins, twice. - Bad teams are bad teams. You always can find them in the bottom of the standings. Almost every year. Because of the lack of commitment to winning. Not saying that the Cubs don't have the commitment to winning, but I think that as a free agent, it's like anything else. It's like the Bulls or any of those things we talk about. It's based on who's also on the roster. - And what is Cleveland one? Nothing. And Jose Ramirez said, I'll take less money to stay here. I love being part of this community. - You can go get guys. They got plenty to sell up at Wrigley Field. Plenty. - They do. - But they gotta go out and get those guys. - 100%. - You should be a player. But unfortunately, teams like Milwaukee and Cleveland are players with even less. - But they don't go after the top guys either. - Because they have a way of winning. They don't see, here's the thing. And it's a different conversation, but it's still the same. Different conversation in which you have to have a way of playing. A system, a way of playing. - The way Milwaukee and the way the guardians play, they do it with less. I don't know what the cub way is. Maybe because it hasn't been established yet because council's new, but I've asked you this earlier this summer as well. What is Cubs baseball? - What is it? - Well, they wanna be a pitching organization. That's what they've talked about. And they've gotten good starting pitching. The bullpen the last month's been very good. Their offense has sucked. And their lack of a closer short-circuited their season. They've blown 18 saves. - Yeah? - Give them nine wins. Just give them half of them. Where are they? - And who's responsible for that? - Jed. - And I'm just saying that it'd be very difficult for me, as if I'm Tom Ricketts, to say, here's more money to spend. Here's even more money to spend. 'Cause who are you gonna spend it on, Jed? And can you guarantee that you'll be better than the Brewers in the Central? I mean, I mean, that was a hard questions. - That's why I said that meeting when they sit down, how are you gonna fix this thing? Before I decided to make a decision, not make a decision on your future, what's your plan? How are you gonna fix this? - Now, I would agree with you that I would not blow it up. Absolutely not. However, it's gonna take more than just a guy, just a bat to turn this around. - Agreed, just dropping one soda on this team. They don't win. Look at the Yankees, how much they've struggled. What did they go, nine and 20? - Yep. - They've got Stanton, and Judge, and Soto, and I can keep going. They got a ton of studs on that team. Struggle City. But the Cubs all have the money and they got plenty to sell. Guys wanna play here. - Well, we're not seeing the off season if guys wanna play here. We're gonna find out, won't we? - Well, guys may wanna play here, but they got to be willing to write the checks too. - Yeah. - Let's find out. I just think it's very difficult for Tom Rickett to say, well, this is how much I've given you, and then we have Bellinger to show for it. And no shot at Soto because I think that he's fantastic. And I'm still, I'm so holding on, I hope that Suzuki can be that difference maker for the Cubs. I think he's solid. - I think he's got a north of 800 OPS. Let me look up Saya, because again. - But you need a guy that can carry you through the doldrums. That's what I'm saying. You don't have that in this on this roster yet. - You do not have a star on the roster. That is 100% correct. 100%. - We mentioned Matt Iberfluze the head coach for the Bears was talking about what's going on with Caleb Williams as far as his pre-season schedule. We'll get to that coming up on the Captain J. Hood Morning Show. - Here's to Dave's headline, headline with Captain J. Hood. - Cubby's opened their series over Milwaukee with a win, 3-1 at Wrigley. LeBron James scored the final 11 of the game for the Americans to key them to the victory and come from behind fashion. Also, Emmanuel Agba has signed defensive end, is now a dolphin that leaves Janik in Gakwe, who was in Miami yesterday, still on the market potentially for the Chicago Bears and Hassan Redick, not reporting to Jets camp amid a contract holdout, while Jordan Love is a hold-in at Packers camp as they discuss parameters for a new deal. J-board! - Kevin Jie, J-hood are back. - And you know this, man. - Chicago's home for sports. - ESPN Chicago. - Kevin Jie, J-hood on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Training camp is open. Maddie replues the head coach for the Chicago Bears got a chance to speak to the media yesterday. - Go USA. - And talks about practice and talking about Caleb Williams. Does practice inform how much Caleb Williams will play in the preseason? - No, I don't think that's tied together at all. I just think that we're gonna have a plan in place. And of course, like I said, the line that's in front of him is important and that will definitely dictate what's going on. But we have a plan in place of what we're gonna do. - Well, as you go through training camp, what you do is you put a lot of things in, right? And you're trying to put the whole offense in and we're also installing the whole defense. So he's gonna get the whole gamut of looks. You know, so there's gonna be an ebb and flow to this. You know, there's gonna be an ebb and flow. I don't think the bell curve, you know, it's like not like just this the whole time, right? It's gonna be, it's gonna be a little step and then go down and then go up. And he's gonna have some hard days. And that's by design, right? And just by happenstance, it's gonna happen. We're gonna give him some looks that are gonna be hard for him and then he's gonna learn from those and then he's gonna grow and then go to the next step. So that's him learning the game up here, learning the speed, learning how the windows close faster. And when he does that, he's just gonna keep growing and learning. And that's just not during training camp. So it's gonna be the first game all the way to the last game. He's gonna keep stacking him up and keep learning. - Thoughts there from Matty Riffloos, the head coach for The Bears? - Look, they are off to a solid start. And I was watching some film yesterday of Caleb looking off Tremaine Edmonds and then throwing that dime to Roman Dunezay. They just need to keep, as he said, stacking practices. Just keep getting better offensively. They've got talent on the defensive side. They got talent on the offensive side. How quick can they get this kid up to speed where he is a difference maker? Not just a game manager, a difference maker out there. I think faster than people realize. - You know, Cap, it's going to be a topic once we get to the first preseason game, the Hall of Fame game, because it is every preseason to determine how much the quarterback plays. I mean, we understand injury and you can have an injury at any time in a game. But I just think in this situation with Caleb Williams, he needs time to be able to just try to get the rhythm of the offense. I'm not asking him to be out there for a half. It's not Sean Patents, you know, a team in which he was with Russell Wilson last year. And Russ thought he was done for a series like, no, no, no, I need to get back out there. Get back out there. I didn't see enough. - Right, I don't think it's that. But I know it's always a topic. So I'm just going to just cut it off at the past now and just say that Caleb Williams does need some time to be able to work with the ones. Not just series, I wouldn't mind a quarter in a lot of these preseason games, so he can get some kind of rhythm. It's he's a glorified practices anyway. But many times, as you've known over the years, coaches put a lot of these starters under glass. Nope, don't need to play or just play a series or just play a couple of downs. It is important to get the rhythm of the game. - Does he get in the Hall of Fame game at all? - Don't you think he should? They're going to play him 45 to 55 snaps the whole preseason. That's what they did with Anthony Richardson and CJ Stroud last year. - I expect him to play most of the preseason games, not all of them. That last one, I don't expect to see him out there, do you? - Depends how camp's gone, how preseason has gone. - Texans, Bills, Bengals, Yes, Chiefs, No. - Texans, Bills, Bengals, Chiefs. I would rather he not play in the Hall of Fame game and play the last three games. - Chiefs, is Andy Regan put his ones out there for a while? That doesn't seem to say like Andy Regan would even play my homes that game. - The last one, I would doubt it. But I mean, we've seen Brady play in the preseason. We've seen Mahomes play in the preseason. Would he play in the final game? Probably not. - I don't think he will. But that first, second and third preseason game, yes. I would say yes to that. - For Mahomes. - For Mahomes, for Caleb. You don't want to see him out there against the Texans August first? You don't think he's ready? - I'm not saying I don't want to see him. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't. I mean, we're talking about, that's a week from Thursday. They want him to have a lot of full padded practices on their docket. You can't even have pads on. I think it's got to go, I heard this on Waddle and Sylvie yesterday. I think it's got to go four days of shorts and shells. Then they get a day off. - Yes. - Then they come back and they can go to a light padded practice. Then they can go to a full padded practice. I do not believe you can put pads on right now. I don't think it's allowed. - I think that one. Waddle made a great point. You're going to play an NFL game where guys are trying to make roster so they're trying to get to the quarterback and you'll have not even two full weeks of practice in and hardly any padded practices. That's why it wouldn't shock me if Caleb didn't play. But he played the last two or three. - Well, I just don't want him to be under glass and then that first game against the Titans. However that goes, I just don't want him to feel like it's rust or he didn't give enough plays out there to be able to feel comfortable in the offense. That's the hope. - Yeah. - And again, he laid that down, Iberfluze. We're going to follow the same general blueprint that they did with Anthony Richardson and CJ Strop. 45 to 55 snaps the entire preseason. - Also, Matt Iberfluze talking about his thoughts on the role that the veteran wide receivers are playing with Caleb Williams 'cause that's important to you. I saw some of that stuff you saw online as well. Great throws by Caleb Williams but it's good to have a veteran out there that he's working with. - Yeah, that's actually part of the process I talked about in the beginning. That's before the walkthrough, right? So spending time together, that's relational, right? Get to know each other better, feed off each other and quiz each other and making sure that you're all on the same page in terms of the concept, the idea, the coverage contour, does that change what we're doing and making sure we're doing that? Go USA. - He's really into Paris, I didn't know. I mean, he's really-- - Go USA. - It's very patriotic after every answer. - He has obviously had some media training and whoever is working with it, he's so much more comfortable up there. So much more comfortable. - Does that mean he's ever going to be Don Rickles up there? No, he's not going to be Dave Chappelle entertaining the media every week but he just looks like he's comfortable. - Could you imagine Rickles as a head coach now? - Oh gosh. - He sees me there in the seat. - Hey, hey, how's it going? Hey, what's your name? - Jonathan. - Jonathan, good to see you. Just a wallet. - Fuck. (laughing) - Anyone, could you imagine that? - My wife and I watched a video not too long ago and it led to another video and it was one of the Dean Martin roasts. - Yeah. - Oh my God, Rickles. - I mean, everybody got it. - Oh my God. - Everybody gets it. - He went up to a lady, big woman. He's like, oh, you look beautiful tonight, sweetheart. Stay on the cottage, she's diet. It's working wonders. - Yeah. - And I'm like, wow. And he goes to person of color, then he goes to a Jew. I mean, it's unbelievable. - Yeah, he get everybody-- - 'Cause he get away with it today? - No. - No. - Well, you could get away with it. Just got to lock up everyone's phones. - You're right. - Yeah, he could do it, but then have the audience in the 2024, they'd walk out. - No, I've never been to a concert where they take your comedy show where they take your phone. Have you? - I have. - Have you, Shay? - Jaymore? - Across the street. - Nope. - I have. - Shay, have you? - I have not, no. - Yeah, Chris Rock and Chappelle. - They take your phone. And how do they search you? What do they do? - They ask you to, well, first of all, you go to the United Center. You got to take all your valuables out and the phone, of course, is going to drop into the little bucket. All right, we'll have to lock that up. And you can carry around the pouch that you cannot open, by the way. The people at the gate can open it for you. It's a pouch you can't open. It's plastic, and you hold onto it. You cannot use your phone. So I've been to, it was Chris Rock across the street here at Chicago Theater. And recently, last time Chappelle was here, same thing. Because they don't want the good material to be put on someone's phone and on social media. - I don't love the taking of the phone. Like, I get it in a place that big because it's difficult to, at the United Center, at least it's difficult to police it. But like I saw Anthony Gesslin, I got to Chicago Theater, and I saw Shane Gillis at the Chicago Theater. And in both cases, they got on stage and just said, if you're on your phone recording, somebody's going to come and kick you out. - Yeah. - Just don't do it. We're not gonna take them from you, but don't do it. You will get kicked out. - That was Eddie Griffin in San Diego. They did that whole thing, they'll kick you out. And what I said in the middle of that Eddie Griffin concert is, please kick me out, this is awful. - Wow, Eddie Griffin's really been like, if you owe your phone, tag me. (laughing) - That's funny. - Seriously. They did give that threat beforehand. They're just like, hey, if you're, you know, if you are caught filming, you'll kick you out. I'm like, and I'll put my phone up real high. Like, yes, 'cause this is not going well. Let's go right in. - That's the news throwing tomatoes. They ask, you know, it's a record. So you just tape the whole thing. - What do you suck? (laughing) - Who's the guy, Jay Moore, on, God. Oh, Ricky Smiley, the same thing at the Horseshoe Casino. They said, hey, do not film. And there were some people that were kicked out of there while he was doing his routine. - Ricky Smiley. - Yeah, to me, man. - Huh? - He's not funny to me. - He's average, he's okay. - Not down with the church bit. - Nah. (laughing) - I mean, once you've seen it once or twice, it's like, okay, what else? (laughing) - For our comedians, they're pretty good talk shows. Is that, or is it just saying, a good DJ? - Well, when you got 50 people in there with you, it works. - That's true. We don't have enough people. - We don't. - We need to be like Steve Harvey or like Ricky Smiley and have 50 more people in here. That's hack. - That's what the Lebitard show is these days. We're just gonna have 40 people in front of a microphone, a rotating cast. - Cap, as this show evolves, we have to have more people in it. We have to have like eight or 10 more people with microphones. That's how the real morning shows do it, pal. A whole ensemble. - Yeah, ensemble radio. - Yeah. - Welcome to the morning zoo, on ESPN 1000. - That's the problem right here. And what would happen is in that situation, it would be me saying, good morning everybody. Welcome to Cap and Jay Hood. So long everybody. See you tomorrow from Chicago. That's all I'd be able to say. Just front and back. I would have nothing else to say. Everyone will just be talking on eight or 10 other mics. - Oh, Danny's fingers would burn off texting everybody. - The Cap and Jay Hood cut of the day is right around the corner on Chicago's Home for Sports. Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention? I've just been handed an urgent news story. - Cap and Jay Hood are back. - Cannonball! - On ESPN Chicago. - Cap and Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. - We love Chicago Cut, don't we? We have the North with Sal? - It is my favorite restaurant in town. Absolutely love it. David Flom and Matt Moore's dining gym is on La Sal North side of the Chicago River. And best patio in town. - All right, Cap, tomorrow it is a Waddle Wednesday here on the Cap and Jay Hood show. And by the way, for those asking, Albert Brier had to cancel today. So he'll be on with us tomorrow to talk NFL. - Yeah, he was on a plane this morning so he will be with us tomorrow as well. It's Tommy and we'll have a whole lot of fun. - We've got a lot to get to tomorrow, including frustrated spirit airlines, Gates, agent, screaming of passengers. - I don't fly, I'm gonna watch it once we walk out of here. I saw you send it to me. - Crazy, holy cow. And so much more, we'll see what the Cubs do against the Brewers tonight. - Like Sox Rangers, I'll watch them both. I'll have reports for you. - Oh God. - By the way, the fat Jack just texted me. - Yeah. - He said, "Play the Brewers." - Again, he was wrong yesterday. Sawing everybody. - Take that. - From Chicago.
