Bring 'em out. Bring 'em out. Bring 'em out. Bring 'em out. Bring 'em out. Bring 'em out. Bring 'em out. Bring 'em out. Bring 'em out. Woo! Oh! God. Welcome in to the "Cap and Chee Hood" Morning Show. Honey, ESPN1000 and we are streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With the returning David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you, we've got Shay. We've got Jaymore. We've got you for a three hour ride on this Monday morning. One open phone lines for you. Three, one, two, three, two. ESPN is our telephone number. Cap is good to see you again, friend. Great to be back with you, my friend. And an awesome week off. Got a new dog. David recognized you coming through the door. Why? I wasn't sure if it was you or me or Jaymore. The bronze God has walked in. Got a little color. I had a little. A lot of sun. I was out on the water. My God. That was great. The sun loves you. And then some people go to the farmer's market and get vegetables, fruit, flowers, maybe a cookie or a pie. So is that like a farmer's tan? No. I hit the shirt off. Okay. Okay. But we went to the farmer's market last week ago Saturday. Yeah. Bought another dog. Mm. Golden Retriever. Golden Retriever. Yeah. That's outstanding. You know, now you've got three dogs again. Yes. It's a three dog night for you again. Yes. So what's the pooch's name? Maverick. I give you Captain Pete Mitchell. Call sign. Maverick. [applause] Stop the applause. [laughter] It's what? Maverick. Why is the dog's name Maverick? It's not because you're James Garner fan. It must be for another reason. Because my wife and I were walking through the farmer's market and there was a breeder set up there. He's like, "This is our last litter for about a year." He's got something. He's got moving out of town for a while. And he had six puppies. We walked, put all of our fruits and vegetables in the car, came back to get some flowers. And he had three left. Two girls and a boy. My wife picked up the little boy. And he started licking my face. He's licking her face. She's like, "What do you want to do?" I said, "Hone, this is your call, not mine." Because she's been saying since Yoshi died. We are good with two. Okay. Your call. I just go to the house. It's your house. You run it. And... You know, that's not true. But go ahead. She said, "Let's do it." I'm like, "Wow." She's like, "Let's do it." Now here's what... All right, sold. Now, there is a twist. There's a twist. You're the impulsive buyer. And she now, all of a sudden said, "Let's do it." Right. How about that? Right. There's a switch. How about that? So, went home, got a check, paid him, and it was hot. It was like 90 degrees. And poor dog had been in, you know, this little wagon probably for four hours by the time we got it. And it handled by everybody coming through 'cause he's adorable. Got him in the car, had the air conditioning cranked up. And she's like, "What are we naming this dog?" And I go, "How about Maverick?" She's like, "That's awesome. Done." Oh my God. Top-gun Maverick, baby. Do you have anything else on your mind besides that movie? I mean, my God. You talk about the one-trick dog, a one-trick pony in this scenario. Really? Do you have anything else on your mind besides Cubs baseball and top-gun Maverick? You're making it seem like it is the greatest movie ever made. It's close. It's not. That'd be close. I actually started in a new show while I was gone. Yeah? Called Presumed Innocent. I heard about this. Oh my goodness. Is that good? Again, let's go back to where we were, Squirrel. Back to the dog. Was there a dog in Presumed Innocent? No, but you said, "Is there anything else on my mind?" Yeah, I got a new show I started. Okay, no. That's not where we're going. We need to talk about this name. I'm just saying like, there's other names out there. You couldn't call the dog Rover? No. I'm throwing Rover. This was 1964. Benji? No. I'm throwing with Benji. Benji's a good name. Benji? No. It was a star on NBC. You remember the show? Yes. Maverick? Maverick. Okay. I just need to know how the other dogs are handling Maverick because I think they're the dogs because you party play it every other day at your flat. I'm sure that there might be a little envy by the other dogs. I'm sure you're walking around the house talking about Maverick. Top gun Maverick. And now there's a dog named Maverick. So we're how the other dogs feel. Sparky and Stanley are handling it very, very well. They were right at the get-go. They were more sparky. He was like, "Who is this little intruder here who's very small?" And now he's been great with him. Great. Did you explain to the other two dogs that this is Maverick? Did you do the introduction? Yes. We did. God. Is that what you do as a dog owner? You're supposed to explain? You explain. Uh-huh. I want you to meet your new brother. Yes. Is that how you do that, Shay? If you were going to bring a second dog in, would you explain to your dog, "Hey, just so you know, we got somebody else coming in." Would you have a sit-down? An explanation? Get him a beer? Have a conversation over dinner and a beer? Yes. Would you do that? You'd drink it out of the can and then the dog would drink it out of the bowl, of course. Correct. Yeah, if we brought a second dog home, there'd be the whole, like, it's ridiculous, man. The dog-parent thing, but I've fallen into the trap. We would definitely have that. Hey, your brother's here. Say hello to your brother. Meet your brother. Hang out. The brother. That's right. Thank you, Stephen A. Well, I doubt that seriously. I don't know. That would be the case. Oh, my first dog's black. The brother. He's super cool, this dog. Super cool. These dogs are the greatest. So, yeah, we're back to being a three-dog night, baby. How about that? How about that? Shea puts it out there. His dog was black. What caused your TV? Well, is it on or off? Damn. It's unbelievable. Well, it's good that you're back in that you're happy now that you have a three-dog home. Yes. I just think the name is ridiculous. The name is amazing. No, it's not amazing, Cap. It's not amazing. You're just on this one track. You're thinking that you saw the greatest movie ever. How many times you watch it? Thirty times? More than that. That's insane. Between Mindy and I went way over that. That's insane. We thought maybe beekeeper. That's another great movie. The beekeeper. Do not tell me you were going to name your dog after the beekeeper. No. It was Maverick, man, from the get-go. Beekeeper would have been a nice thing. Couldn't hear bee. Good bee. Good keeper. So, all good, man. Anthony and Schumburg are on Cap and Jay Hood. Hey, Anthony. How's it going, guys? Hey. What's up, Anthony? I just want to let you know Maverick is an awesome name. That's the name of my great, great name. Oh, you're the man. Yes. So excited. For short, I call him Mavi Boy. Yeah, we were calling him Mavi, but then my wife bought a training book. And now you can't do that. Don't call him Mavi yet. He has to learn his name. Oh, all these different rules. Yes, I agree with that. But after a year or so, you'll start saying it. Another thing. I just want to say that was a great seventh inning stretch at the Schumburg Boomers game. And another thing. My kid won the 50/50 raffle with the tennis ball by making it into the blue barrel bucket at second base. This is at the Schumburg Boomers game. Friday night, I was there. Yeah, sure. That was a great time out there. Packed. They lead the league in attendance. It was packed. We did the anthem. How about the first pitch? Oh, he'd have been proud. I was late for that. Right down the middle, baby. Not a surprise. Yeah. Not a surprise. Of course he did. And let me tell you. The Schumburg Boomers, they had some scarf giveaway for Harry Potter. Timely. And it was lined up. I pulled up and I'm like, okay. They're not all here to see me throw out the first pitch and hear him saying what's going on here. It was jam-packed. Well, you were part of the attraction. We've been talking about it for weeks here on the show. First of all, it's not surprising you threw it down the middle because it's not like you walked 30 miles beforehand. Correct. And then threw it. Correct. What's in that? I knew, I mean, you're the guy that is a natural pitcher. Of course you threw it down the middle. That's not a surprise. We had fun. The singing though, I wouldn't ask the Schumburg Boomers to send us a copy here to ESPN 1000. I want to hear that. What'd that sound like? Oh, God. Oh, it was stellar. That's right. Yeah, it's probably sound like an old door hinge. Yeah, it wasn't good. I want to hear what that sounds like. If Schumburg Boomers, hey, you're a partner here, send in the sound. Jay Moore. I'm sure they have it. Jay Moore, have your inbox ready. I want to hear your caps sing the seventh inning stretch. I would say that the pitch that you threw out was probably better. Yes, I would agree. Totally agree. You know, it's funny how the world works, right? Maverick is a cool name. Go ahead, Jay Moore. ♪ Buy me some penis and cracker jack ♪ Oh, pretty good. That's naggy. White Sox had a very consistent weekend. No need for the shot. It's not a shot. No need for that. Don't do that. 27 and 74. I can read. I know what's going on. Cobb scored four runs the entire weekend. They won one game. Don't worry about the White Sox. That took care of them Friday night. They had network Jonathan Hood come in until he wasn't. Love it. It was not pretty. Kind of honest, man. Oh, doctor. I'm sure I'll be asked again, but it just had it just came out. It just like no folding of the hands and the Chicago White Sox fall short. Fall short. It's like, oh, no, no, it came out Friday night. They're 47 under 500. And now the big rumor is this weekend from both Bob Nightingale and Ken Rosenthal that the Dodgers and White Sox are discussing potential of a deal for Robert, Copec, and crochet. They'll get two or three of them. Do the Dodgers are they like grandfather didn't they get like a 40 man roster in the big leagues? Hey, man, they got plenty of minor league talent if you like it and you know it's going to be cultivated. It's going to be good. It's the Dodgers. So that's a head nod. Yes. To all of that. Wow. I watched them last night. Solid solid team. Yes. Three options for the Cubs by sell or do nothing. We're going to talk about the Cubs coming up next cap and jhood weekday morning seven to 10. Back in your mouth. Okay. It's about that time. You're tuned in to the cap and jhood show. Everything ain't hardcore, you know, you know, on Chicago's home for sports ESPN, Chicago. Back in jhood week day morning seven to 10 here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Here's hoping that you're going to have a great Monday and a great week as we keep your company until 10 o'clock that Mike Greenberg comes in right here on Chicago's home for the Bears and the White Sox, ESPN 1000. So cap, we just got off the weekend, got through the all star break and you say, okay, it's go time for the Cubs. We have documented how crucial this time is between now and July 31st for the Cubs to be able to make a, as I used to say, right, to be able to do something here, to be able to shift the narrative for the ball club, to be closer in the wild card race for Jed Hoyer and Carter and everyone else in the front office to say, hey, we need to sprinkle on a little something extra for the bullpen, a little bit more for offense to be able to take a stretch run to be a playoff team. And what happens? You come off the break and you lose two out of three against the Arizona Diamondbacks. At the championship type ball club that we saw cap, it's a okay team. The point is though is that the bats are still slumping. That's amazing to me after that time off to come back and still have the same issues offensively. I just don't, I mean, it's a head scratcher to me. Once again, the strength of ball club is a starting pitching, but the offense just sucks. Just not good enough. Yeah, and I said this over the weekend when I did my wrap up, my recap, the bullpen since the 27th of June is like top three in all of baseball. That's a large sample size here. It's the 22nd of July. It's almost a month. They've done a really good job. So you've got to give them credit for getting different guys in here. They've got lighter junior back. They're going to get merry weather back. They still left themselves without a closer and that for me is an unconscionable sin two years in a row. I excused it last year because you tried to see if Al Zalai could be that guy. You knew going into this season, he didn't have the stones to be the closer and you did nothing to address that. Now you've blown 18 saves, but they have fixed that late inning stuff in terms of the six, seventh, eighth inning when they got to have relievers, they've been really, really good. That all said, offensively, have you ever heard of a big hit in a big spot? They get men on, they take more strikes down the middle for strike three than almost any team in baseball. I mean, I'm watching them take fastballs right down the middle. See you later. Now the umpire on Friday was horrifically bad and I follow umpire auditor on Twitter. Oh, yeah. And they blasted him. Roberto, Roberto Ortiz, yeah, he was horrifically bad on Friday. Morrell with men on takes one clearly two inches down low, strike three in half, three inches off the plate, strike three. There were multiple things twice to have that guy. Is there any accountability by Major League Baseball? You want me as a fan and I'm a die hard like you. We watch everything. Yep. Is there any accountability where they come out and go, Roberto Ortiz has been suspended for five games because of a horrific performance in the Cubs Diamondbacks game. That's not why they lost that didn't help. They lost because they can't freakin hit. The bullpen is getting better. The starting pitching has been outstanding has been and need a big hint. A big spot rarely you come through yesterday and the ninth Zuzuki came through drove in the tying run. The dribbler up the middle and then correct. He got a grumble base hit game tie and then they go to the post game because in the seventh I believe Ann and the ninth Christopher Morrell came up and you know I like the kid. He makes no money. He's 25. He's got 18 homers. Yeah, his average stinks. But guess what? You're not going to trade him because all you're doing is selling low and that's a stupid deal. You're not going to get enough back to make it worth your while. There's no reason to move him. So he comes up and he swings so hard and when he makes contact, that ball goes a long way. He doesn't come through in the seventh and in the ninth. So Jesse goes to the post game and you know I've been all over council as has Tommy Waddle and Sylvie when Waddle said there's another one strike that they called strike three and the ball's not there. The one to Morrell on Friday and council's like, that's low. How about coming out of the dugout? I'm not asking to be Mike Dica. That's not who is personalities. He's got to be himself. But if you're going to bark from the dugout, how about coming out and getting your ass kicked out and maybe just maybe show a little fire that shoots some adrenaline through the stadium that carries to your Morrell bun team. Yeah, Sylvie said it Friday. Absolutely. Again, I'm not asking him to be me who would have gone in and flipped over the buffet table. That's not a mature response. I'm not claiming to be mature, but Craig has to be Craig. And if you're going to stand there on the top step of the dugout and go, hey, that's low. Okay, get your ass out on the field and get in his face and go, you've been effing us all day long. I'm done with this. He's going to go, you're gone. Great. And then get your money's worth and just maybe with 41,000 in the ballpark, a little shot of adrenaline. Everyone goes nuts. Maybe it carries over to your lousy ass team. He doesn't do it. But then in the post game, Jesse asked a very fair question earlier in the game to sleep. The bats digging like the seventh inning when Morrell, there's a time run at second. He's looking like you're swinging for the lake there. I don't know. What do you think about some of those? Come on, Jesse. Come on. That's your comment? Yeah. I'm wondering about, I think that's, that's a, that's a bad take. What? That's a bad take. He's swinging for the lake. That's a bad take. It's a bad take. Why is that? He's having a good at bat trying to hit the ball hard. It didn't work. The pitcher made a good pitch. He made it out. Okay. That's the most fired up I've seen Craig council all season long. Good for you, Jesse. That's a legitimate question. Do we try and just punch the ball the other way? Again, I am a fan of Christopher Morrell. Has he had a good year? No. He's hitting whatever, 2 13, whatever he's hitting. He's got 18 home runs to lead your team. He's 25. There's no value in trading him. He'd be a throw in and a deal. Well, okay. Well, Jesse's question was very fair and for Craig to finally show that his heartbeat gets over 60 beats a minute to do it to Jesse, stop yourself. Well, I, from council standpoint, he's trying to protect his player. I get that. I said what he said. I asked you a question, but here's, but let me, let me just follow up by saying this that more reporters in there, if you're seeing the same thing time and time again, we're getting bad swings and early swings like peak, crow, Armstrong, late in the ball game. You get the reliever on the ropes and what is the first thing you do? You fly out to short left field. You're not going to take some pitches. These are questions that I would ask if I'm in there like, Hey, what's the approach in that spot? Right? More of those questions will get his heart racing a little bit. Jesse's the first one to actually challenge council about the at bat from, from morale. That was him defending his player. I get that. Okay. But what manager doesn't? Okay. But couldn't he have answered it this way rather than, and you may be right saying, Jesse, I, I don't agree with the take. Chris is a hard swinger. He's trying to put the ball in play. I don't agree with you instead of that's a bad take. That's a bad. That's what you're taking. It's a bad take, Jesse. I thought Jesse's question was legitimate. Your team is awful offensively right now, awful and, and you're going to come at Jesse. You can disagree with him, right? But how about showing a little fire on the field? Well, he can't do that, Cap, because this is a year of evaluation. He's managing like it's your evaluation. He's managing as if it's Dale Swam in there or Mike Quattie. Well, we're just going to see what the ball club does and we'll make our adjustments next year. What do you mean adjustments next year? It's now you got two hundred thirty two hundred twenty seven point six million dollar payroll. You can't tell me though that he's not managing as if he's evaluating the ball club for next year. He is. Give me those key moments that council really made a difference in the dugout this year. Go ahead. There's not a lot of them, and I'm not saying that's out of his, that's his fault. He can only play the roster that they gave him, but still it's about pushing the butt right buttons. Which wire are you cutting the red one or the black one, Cap? If you're, if you're a crack council, what you're talking about is valid. More than valid. Correct. So look, everyone's not going to be booing from the Yankees or somebody or snicker from the Braves flying off the handle going after the umpires. I understand everyone's personality is different. However, I think that from a fan based standpoint from a ball club standpoint, you're not just the CEO presiding over the team. You're the manager of the ball club. And whatever he's saying off to the side is one thing, Cap, but being, you know, quiet and being soft spoken, that doesn't bring home the wins. You have to be a leader from the front. Council does not lead from the front. I'm just telling you like, how do I know? I'll see the one loss record. Whatever you think of the ball club is one thing. We can blame jet for that. However, the most demonstrative he's been is this with Jesse. Right. That says a lot. Yes. It's the same crap we used to get on Dictorana bowed or some of these other guys that would just barely speak above a whisper in the, in the, in front of the press. You're like, so is this how you talk to your players? Is this how you rally the troops? Really? I'm just telling you, I'm looking at the one loss record and I'm listening to that. I'm like, so that's your concern. His bad take. You know that's bad approach, but again, it's a ball club filled with bad approaches offensively. I don't like the ambush. I think that's BS. I do. I know the shades brings it up because you think that's a catchphrase. I just think that you still have to be able to work account, even in 2024, but all the great numbers and everything that you, I don't care. Like at some point, a fly ball can score a run of being able to take some pitches to wear down the opposition matters still today in 2024. I don't care what numbers are are at some point you have to think as a hitter, not the bullet from the numbers, but from the situation at the plate. And that's the problem with the Cubs. We're going to ambush them. First ball, fastball, fly out the center, fly out to right. You're not even working account. You're making it easy for the opposition. That's the Cubs way. That's what I'm seeing. You're not good enough to go first ball fastball and be able to keep the line moving. You're just not. They're just not coming through in big spots. I mean, you have opportunities and they can't get it done. It's embarrassing how bad they are. You're spoiling really good starting pitching. You really are. Managa took a no hitter into the sixth. He gave up two hits and seven innings, one run. And when Euhineo Suarez hit the ball, the Waveland Avenue, my son turned to me, Brett, the most optimistic Cubs fan in the world. I think it's over, dad. I'm like, what? I go, relax, it's one to nothing. He goes, we can't hit. I mean, he was almost right. They end up getting a run in the bottom of the night to tie it. Brett, what did you just say? Most optimistic fan in the world. It shocked you. I'm sure. I was stunned. What's he saying there? It's over, dad. I think it's over. What? Yeah. Yeah. It's pathetic. How poor they're playing. Nick, I just like the White Sox aren't trying. That's a different argument. No. The Cubs spent, and I got a message for my friend Nick Friedel, who I talked to over the weekend, who I love dearly. He takes the easy way out. It's so disappointing. And I told him this, they don't spend enough money, Nick. Could they spend more? Absolutely. You're the owner, and that was what you saw your GM was running out there for $227.6 million. You wouldn't get more money either. They spend $60 million more than anyone in their division. They're eighth in the major leagues in payroll. He doesn't like that. I call him Mr. Ricketts. Well, it's not like Tom and I are friends. I don't hang out with him. He's Mr. Ricketts. You want me to call him Tom Ricketts? Tom. And a family, Nick would like you to spend more money because Nick thinks the only way to win is to spend $500 million. I don't have that workout for the Mets. Not too good. Not at all. No. The Cubs are eighth. Could they be top five? Certainly. But guess what? There's more than enough payroll in there to be a way better team that dead freaking lasts. Just understand Chicago Bears, if you're listening up there, you have the right to edit. You can say you want to get stuff out of there. It's as if the Giants said, go ahead. Show us dumb. We are. Holy cow. Some of the stuff that's out there, not good cap. And by the way, I want to give you full credit. You were the first to say it. We know it. None of us were concerned that they wouldn't sign Caleb and Rome in time for camp. But I heard that the H field cameras were rolling, which is exactly what you said. It's a TV thing. Yep. They went into the 11th hour. All right. Are you going to be here to stay? Okay. Come on in. All right, Caleb. Make it official. All right. You're rolling. All right, let's go. Pen the paper. Exactly. It's already been. It was already locked in. That's it. They were waiting for the cameras to get there. That's all. There you go. I was not worried. I think my favorite thing I've seen from the Giants is still Joe Shane getting on the phone with Saquan. Yeah. To say, hey, buddy, we're not going to pay you, like go test the market, figure out what you're worth, but come back to us. Let us know what they say you're worth, and we'll see if it's a number we like. I need to say one's like, okay, appreciate it. Let me go. Do I have your word on that, Saquan? Saquan basically tells him, uh, believe yourself, no, my word. That was a, that was a similar situation with me at the other, at the other station. Hey, you can see if there's any other offers, but if you go over there to ESPN 1000, you will stay and you'll keep in touch, right? No. I'm out. It's like, no, Mitch, I will not keep in touch. It's like that. I'm gone. Yeah. Once I'm gone, I'm gone. I'm not keeping in touch. That is it. Uh, you have a right to edit. That's the, that's the whole bottom line of the Shay. You can edit out stuff. The Giants leaving all that in made you look foolish. Horly. Oh man, that was bad. All right. Shane, what do we have? All right. Training camp underway for the Bears. We have a list came out for three players that are likely on the chopping block. Cuts are going to come up in a few weeks. We'll figure out what this roster is going to look like. The first of the three players, Khalil Herbert, we've talked about, is going to struggle to get consistent snaps in the receiving game either as a pass catcher or a blocker. Feels like that role is going to go to Swift and Roshan Johnson in some combination. The next two guys could be casualties of a bolstered offensive line. Bears went out and got a lot of help. That puts Larry Bormins and Tier Carter's futures in question. So shot or no shot, these players will not make the roster. Okay. So are we saying that Khalil Herbert is expendable? Like he won't make the roster. It's not like he's not going to play hard, Cap, but I think it's about Swift and Johnson. Agreed. They wanted to have somebody they deemed to be a better running back than that was Swift. Johnson is by far the best blocker of those three dudes. So yeah, I could see a scenario where Khalil Herbert's not on this football team or they trade him. In a waddle last week's agreed that it's a possibility that Herbert could be moved or just won't make the team. Nothing against the young man just that you have a litany of running backs here and Travis Homer is a special teams guy. So you don't need four. Correct. You need three. That's correct. And the other choices were what now? Morum and Jotir Carter. That's a good battle. That's a good battle because either one of those guys, one's a left guard. The other one's a right tackle, but you can move them around right there versus until to be able to play other positions spots in a pinch. Yes. I've been waiting for that breakout Larry Borum game Jotir Carter. One of those guys could be cut. Sure. I just don't know which one. No question about it. Just don't know which one. No question. They've upgraded their depth in a big way. Ah, Doug Kramer still hanging in there. Doug Kramer, the allied eye, still hanging on the rocks. It snaps. It's centered the other day. Good for him. And the last choice was... That was it. That was all three. Oh, yeah. That's a shot. That's a shot. Absolutely. Those guys keep it moved. Right. Any word on Emma Godjay? You've got to talk to Courtney about that in 9/18. Yes. So there's no timetable for his return. This is per polls, but that he is coming along great on his rehab from a torn quad. But they are very, very happy with his work ethic and how he's been trending in the building. But right now, not ready to play. We so are so hyper focused on Williams and Adunte. I'm going to get the entire draft class because we get these A+s, A-s, all the bears. We'll stall the draft. I'm watching all of them now because I want to see which ones besides Williams and Adunte could pay dividends for the bears. Correct. That's important. And the punter. Yeah. He's fine. They love him. He's the best that was on the board. Yep. Get on prime with it. That's it. Uh, Shay. All right. Matt Iberflus, I hope, has learned from some of his past mistakes. Last year, everybody was questioning the preparation. Right. Did they do enough in camp? Was there enough buy-in? Right. Did they have enough days on task? Of course I would. Was the go-to phrase by Iberflus tied on task for all the guys up at camp. He said they didn't have it. This year, it seems like there's a different energy. He's been talking about the importance of having his starting offense take reps against his starting defense, particularly Caleb Williams. And Iberflus says he's got no mercy. He's mixing in disguised coverages, stunts, delayed blitzes, post snap switches, everything you can do to confuse a rookie quarterback. And they're doing it now in camp with their best players. So shot or no shot, preparation in the off season will not be a concern this season. That's a shot. Everybody said that Caleb's going to play. They also looked at the number of snaps for CJ Stroud and Anthony Richardson, which was between 45 and 55 pre-season reps in the games. And he said that's about where they think they're going to come in at. So I don't have any concern about prep. I don't. Yeah. I have no problem with the prep. What I have a problem with is September 8th. Let's go. You get prep all you want, but if you're still making the same mistakes as a head coach as far as not being able to understand timeouts, time and score, all those things, thinking that those timeouts carry over like old cell phone minutes, that's a problem. Correct. It's just now you're in year three. It's going to be better. Great. Like you have the weapons, get out of the way. Great. Prep them right. I mean, that's your job is it, but don't be the reason why the team takes a step back. Agreed. Bad decision-making. Yeah. And it sounds like they have upgraded in their analytics department. They'll have someone on the headset with him and help him make those calls, just like Belichick had his guy and Sean Payton has his got. That's what they've got to do. I'm just saying I'm just being fair because it's not like we have to we can ignore the first two years of Hebrew flus. I can't. I can't do that. Yeah. Are you going to be better as a head coach in year three? That's the hope. But the idea that, well, we got Roman Dune saying Caleb Williams, so all is good now. All is forgiven. No, it's not. You know, when we talk about hot seat coaches, I find it fascinating that Hebrew flus is never even in the top 10. It does matter. If this team underachieves, I don't want to be coming in in December, be like, you know, this Hebrew flus. No, I'm telling you now in July that this has to get better. I'm talking about the way he coaches the team. No question about it. And I think he would agree with that. So let's go, man. Here's Shay Norley. Let's go, man. Speaking of Hebrew flus and better preparation at camp and the time on task stuff, probably the biggest culprit of the time on task term last year was Nate Davis, who missed time in camp for reasons. Miss time in OTAs, miss time in mini camp after being a free agent acquisition. This year, things got off to a rocky start, missed mini camp, missed OTAs, fans were fed up. There were starting to be rumblings that the bears could be fed up, be thinking about moving on from Nate Davis, especially with all the acquisitions they made this off season. Well, at training camp, maybe a little bit of a surprise. First practice, Nate Davis practiced in full shot or no shot. Nate Davis got the message and came correct. That's no shot. Wait, I mean, that's one report, Shay. That's one. Tell me if that's going to be a theme between now and the end of preseason. Uh, I would completely disagree with my friend. I think that is a shot. I think he went, hold on a second now. I got two more years left to 10 million. And it's not all guaranteed. I got to get there. I got to get this thing right. Last year, he tragically lost his mother having gone through that. It sucks. And some people process grief differently. That's correct. And it really affected him. Well, now he came in and better shape. He's ready to go. And he wants his starting spot right there, right guard. Sounds like a nice training camp report, but the whole point is is it's got to be a trend, not a one day thing. Yeah. A trend. We completely agree with you there. He's what I call it is it's got to be what we call the stack. You stack one practice after another, one after another. You stack them on top of each other and go, Oh, he's got a whole weekend. Wow. That's it. He's got two weeks. That's it. He didn't miss a practice the whole camp. See what we do as fans and as reporters, I think in some ways is take a look at that one bullet point. You see the column, right? And then there's these bullet points about individual guys. And the bullet point is Nate Davis is in camp and he looks good. Yeah. How about next week? Correct. How about in the preseason? Correct. How about does he make the ball club? That matters to me. Great. It's like, I'm never going to fall for the bullet point. I'll read it the way it is like, okay, Nate Davis looks good today because Nate Davis looked good in two weeks. Is he locked in? Just keep stacking practices. Is he a different ball play? Like, I don't know the answer until we see it on the field hoodie. I live by this philosophy. The philosophy is, try to be better today than I was yesterday, be better tomorrow than I am today. Just keep stacking good days. That's it. How's that working for you? Great. Great. You have a meeting, by the way, with Danny later, we'll see how great that is. This is what I was told. Just rumor. Uh oh. Here's Shay Norlin. Bring your ID. Too many days off. Bob. Too many days away from the show. I think we have a problem here. Go extra. Bob Nightingale wrote up the trade deadline, reported that the Cubs have had conversations with both the Yankees and Red Sox about Jameson Tyone. False hoods. Oh. Well, you said Bob Nightingale, right? Yeah. Well, I mean, unless it was, you know, any facts, I would believe it. Well, just, we'll take it on its face here for the sake of conversation that Cubs reportedly per Bob Nightingale have in conversations with both the Yankee and Red Sox about Jameson Tyone. But if not yet decided if there'll be buyers or sellers, Tyone has pitched well this year, but he's under contract for the next two years at $36 million total, shot or no shot the Cubs should trade Tyone. Look, what are you giving me for? Are you giving me like, oh my goodness, they got who? Like some top prospect that I was going to be plugging play next year in my lineup. Do you think you deserve one for a third starter or second, a third starter says on a good team, Tyone is what on a good team? He's the number three. You think you deserve a front line starter for that? Probably not. Yes. No, he's under control and to trade deadline teams do desperate things. Oh, I know. Yeah. That's bad teams that will do anything to try to win today. I am not going to trade a cost-controlled starter that I have for two more years who's pitching really well, unless I'm getting something that I go, wow, I got how many years of control of this young player that I think could be a starter for us. If that's not out there, then I'm not moving him. So again, if you trade in, you're waving the white flag on this season, should you? You waved a couple of weeks ago and then they rallied because of the owl. Correct. That's nine and five right now. That would mean if they played at nine and five pace with Otis, the owl, that would be 104 win season. That's how good nine and five is. The owls don't weigh better than that team up there. And he's showing more fight the owl than Craig has till Jesse got him mad. Did you hurt your hamstrings with that stretch you just made right there? How's your hamstrings? You feel good. It can't feel that good with that kind of stretch you just made there. There's no stretch. There's a population that you just made there with the amount of wins you'd have with the owl. If you could play nine and five every 14 games, you're going to win 104 ball games. Too bad you don't have a nine and five roster. We don't, which is disappointing at the amount of money they spent. But tell Nick they could spend 450 million. If you're not spending it correctly, it doesn't matter, Nick. Shay, that's a shot. That's a shot because I'm going to tell you right now, and we'll talk about this further as we get closer and closer to the deadline cap. If you stand still with the amount of money that's doled out by the Cubs, if you're standing still, you get more of the same. No, we're going to turn this around next year. Well, you heard that last year. So standing still won't get it done. And listen, it's not my money. Of course, any average Cup fan would say, whatever you're spending isn't enough. I want better players. As a fan, you have a right to demand that. It doesn't mean that Rick Ricketts is going to do that, and it doesn't make Ricketts a bad owner, because I've seen bad ownership in this town. I know what it's like when you just completely just put the lock on the safe and not spend anything. Andy McPhail. Right. You think that you're the twins, and you can win on the cheap? No, no, no, no. No. They spent enough money to be able to at least win this division, but a small Mark and Milwaukee is getting it done. Why? Because they have a way of playing that's solid and sound, and the Cubs don't have a way of playing. They don't. So, what I'm telling you, Cap, is that standing still will not make the grass grow at Clark and Addison. You've got to do something. But why? Because you'll get more of the same Milwaukee is the class of the division. I think he's going to stay that way until the Cubs do something about this. Okay, but my question is, I'm not giving up top prospects unless I'm getting something that helps me beyond this year. I'm not going out and renting some closer in the last year of his deal and giving up a really good prospect. Not going to do it because I don't think dropping that player now on the 22nd of July on our team fixes this team. I don't. You don't understand, Cap, but I'm just saying you're going to have more frustrating recaps moving forward if you don't do anything. Correct, but if they don't go out and make any deals, okay, then they're obviously not all in that they can win this year. If that's what they truly believe that Tom has decisions to make because Jed's going in the final year of his contract. Does he extend him? Does he fire him? Does he say, hey, you got one year to fix this? And then when you have executive in the final year of his deal, sometimes desperate men do desperate things, there'd have to be, and I trust Jed, I like him a lot. But the team he's put together right now, that falls at his feet. For the second straight year, he didn't have a closer. And for the second straight year, his team's not going to be in a postseason it looks like. We'll go around the NFL and then Jesse Rogers at 835, Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 and also on our YouTube channel. You're listening to Captain Jay Hood, follow the show on Instagram @thecapman and @igjhood. This is ESPN Chicago, Chicago's home for sports. It both sucks, he sucks, I'm just a fan, I'm not a football developer, I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy in front, but there he goes, this is not Detroit man, this is the Super Bowl. This is a really thickly built guy, I mean, what's the answer you're looking for on these things here? It's time to go around the NFL right here on the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. More baseball with Jesse Rogers coming up at 835, he's in the crosshairs of one Craig Council as we get ready for the Cubs and Brewers. What's the NFL with Shane Arlin? I have a quarterback centric around the NFL today and I want to start with some comments from John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens head coach about his quarterback Lamar Jackson, Lamar, left practice, he was sent home, I believe yesterday they said he had a pretty bad illness and John Harbaugh met the media and it really spoke very highly of his quarterback. And I believe the Ravens and we've always had a vision for Lamar Jackson, it started with Lamar's vision and his mom's vision when he said he was going to be a quarterback, there's going to be a quarterback in high school, he's going to be a quarterback in college, he's going to be a quarterback in the National Football League. The vision for Lamar Jackson and it's a vision, it's something you see it like it's already happened, you can see it like it's already been done. The victory has already been won when you pour into a vision and the vision that we have together is that Lamar Jackson is going to be common be known and be recognized as the greatest quarterback ever to play in the history of the National Football League. No shot, no shot, did he give that speech on Capitol Hill? Very odd, just the way he said all that, very odd. Was that a question posted to him and he's rolled all that out, that's very interesting. Yeah. Well look, if I can anything else, there's a mic in your in your beak, you better say something positive about your players. I mean, that's what he's going to an extreme, isn't it? Well, I mean that's support. You say that about your players. I'm not going to say, yeah, Dan's be Swanson in our vision, he's going to go down as the greatest shortstop in the history of baseball, no. Hey man, you're just trying, you know what that is, he's just trying to fuel and try to gas up Lamar Jackson, I get that. As a coach, you know coach speak when you hear it, he sees Lamar Jackson, but he says boy, there's a ceiling art as success, maybe I'm not supporting him enough, I'm going to step on the gas. But if he had said, look in our world, Lamar Jackson's already done enough to get in the Hall of Fame. Well, he's won two MVPs, yeah, that's at least a discussion about greatest quarterback in the history of the sport, stop yourself. Well, that's funny. And Harbaugh giving hyperbole, never heard it before, you're showing him on Shane. Dude, I thought he was going to end that with greatest quarterback in the history of the Baltimore Ravens organization, and I would have been like, okay, I see that vision, greatest quarterback in NFL history, buddy, you just beat your ass in the playoffs, you don't remember watching them. I take it with a grain of salt, it's a Harbaugh, saying things, not a surprise. At Harbaugh saying something would have opened Mike over the top, wow, what a shock. Here's Shane Orley. We have some quarterbacks here who are expected to, this is a funny way of phrasing it, they're expected to exceed expectations this season. The first is Anthony Richardson in the Indianapolis Colts organization. Will you exceed expectations after a season that ended early last year, but he looked good when he was on the field? Must exceed expectations. From what we saw, just the sample size, he will exceed expectations, meaning that he'll stay healthy. He's really good, really talented, and there were people that felt he was the best quarterback in the draft a year ago. Absolutely, but what does Alex Brown know? Go ahead, Shane. Oh, Bryce Young. Bryce Young is the next passer on this list to exceed expectations. Last year, one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL, his rookie season kind of sabotaged. This year, expecting a little more, out of Bryce Young. He will exceed expectations, absolutely. Bryce Young will be a click better than he was last year, has to. He has to be better now, he's on a bad team in a bad organization with a bad owner, but he's a pretty talented cat now. He should be better. He's a little guy. New head coach, Dave Canales, same guy who resurrected Geno Smith in Baker Mayfield. Yeah, I like Dave Canales. I always thought he was cool. Does good sideline work for the Bears during the preseason? Go ahead, Shane. That's Lou Canales. What's that? That's Lou Canales. This is Dave Canales. I don't even spell it the same. You don't know. Wow. Shane. All right, here's a fun one. Because I actually think this might be true. I've been talking myself into it, unfortunately. Rosa Wilson. He will underachieve with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Underachieving means he's like dead professionally. Yep. Right? Like under the bar is set so low. Just be competent. If he underachieves, then he's professionally dead. I think Russell Wilson has a resurgent year. His career is revitalized under Michael Tomlin. This will be the most pressure that Russell Wilson's ever been in in his career. It's Mike Tomlin. Oh, God. So long, everybody. If you mess up just a little bit, you're not going to screw around with Tomlin's legacy. Justin, get in there. Oh, God. I think unless he gets hurt, I think he plays the lion's share of the games and he has a good year. It's not like he's got the quick hook cap. I'm just saying that if it's not going the right direction, Tomlin will get the hook. Just telling you, he's not trying to go under 500 in a very tough AFC North. Agree? We are rooting for Justin to get the lion's share of the snake. Agree, because as a bear's fan, I want the higher draft pick, the four instead of the six. I just think Russell's going to have a good year. I do. It's only because you spent time with Sierra and put your hand where it did not belong. Oh my goodness, that's a heavy accusation. Wow. Look at the lawyer immediately going after the brother immediately, not me sonically. Yeah. I thought that was. I saw the pitcher. Check. The last fold in my arm. I don't think that's where he was doing the Travis Kelsey with the hand away from the girl. You see that photo? Yes. You must do that. Absolutely. You're not getting me. My hand's not anywhere close to you. You have to do that. The last name on this list, Jordan Love, I think is a very tricky one to place because what are the expectations? For me, I expect Jordan Love to be like a pro bowl to all pro caliber quarterback. And if he's not, then he underwhelmed me NFL best 18 to one touchdown to interception from week 11 to the end of the season last year. Oh, he was excellent. He needs to do that again. Pass. First of all, you expect this a year ago, I was the guy going pretty good kid. You were laughing at me. I got a camp boy. Yeah, it's fine. I was wrong. 100%. Is he going to get signed by today's the deadline, right? I think he has to get his deal done by today because they start camp. I defer to you on that. Thank you. He's a pretty good kid. Okay. What to expect actually there? He might be pretty good. I don't know what to expect. It's year two. Yeah, I have no idea what to expect there. It's like if you asked about CJ Stroud, Shay, what are your expectations, does he exceed expectations? I expect them to have a really good year. That's my thing with love. He can't exceed my expectations because my expectations are so high. The only thing he can do is meet them or underwhelmed. Yeah. All right. Well, we got Jesse Rogers coming up next right here on Captain Jay Hood. And of course, Jesse brought to you by West Coast Men's Health, helping men W. All right. We will get to your Jesse's thoughts on the Cubs and Sox helping men with ED for over five years. No, just W. It's fine. Okay. That's not it. He's in the middle. I'm not doing both at the same time. I mean, how rocky the water is, Sparky, docked the boat. I like the idea of just men W. You could have stopped right there. Jesse Rogers in the crosshairs of Crick Council, next on Captain Jay Hood.
