[MUSIC] Good morning and welcome in to the Captain Jay good morning show on ESPN 1000. And we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan Jonathan Hood with you now time for a shot or no shot and has brought to you by the ESPN bat. Now live in Illinois side of today needs to just get $100 bonus bets with any sports book. Bat we say good morning to shade double and Northern. Good morning boys bat on Monday football's back trading camps open 10 days to the Hall of Fame game. We are rocking and rolling with football. How you doing hoodie? I feel great. You know why because finally we have we've crawled through glass. We've gone through everything to finally get to football. It's not like we haven't talked football on the show but the idea that the gates have swung open. We're good. I think that my hope is that with hard knocks that we could see a lot of fun and smart things from house hall because if it's anything like hard knocks giants that could be a disaster. Holy smokes how dumb are the giants okay the Giants okay horrible. I was watching one of the half cuts where you're talking about where the owners or Joe Shane the GM said I'm hearing the bears are driving the price up with Saquon Barkley. I told you they were after Barkley she's like no it can't be yes the the no I think are as a show we said we don't think that the bears should get Saquon Barkley correct that's it was it wasn't no it was because it was a shadow no shot and here's a thought I thought they were fine in the running back room. I didn't know they were looking for a veteran and so I said it was fine you don't need Saquon Barkley why bring this guy here who is injured on arced on earth on earth yeah in our stadium and they absolutely were down the road on him until the Eagles went to a level where Paul's one I were out we'll take swift just understand Chicago Bears if you're listening up there you have the right to edit you can say you want to get stuff out of there it's as if the Giants said go ahead show us dumb we are holy cow some of the stuff that's out there not good cap and by the way I want to give you full credit you were the first to say it we know it none of us were concerned that they wouldn't sign Caleb and Rome in time for camp but I heard that the eight field cameras were rolling which is exactly what you said it's a TV thing yeah they went into the 11th hour all right well are they going to be here this day okay come on in all right Caleb is it make it official all right you're rolling all right let's go pen the paper exactly it's already been it was already locked in that's it they were waiting for the cameras to get there that's it that's all there you go how was that worried I think my favorite thing I've seen from the Giants is still Joe Shane getting on the phone with sake one yeah to say hey buddy we're not going to pay you like go test the market figure out what you're worth but come back to us let us know what they say you're worth and we'll see if it's a number we like any sake one's like okay appreciate it I mean goes do I have your word on that sake one sake one basically tells them believe yourself no my word that was a that was a similar situation with me at the other at the other station hey you can see if there's any other offers but if you go over there to ESPN 1000 you'll stay and you'll keep in touch right no I'm not that's like no Mitch I will not keep in touch I'm gone yeah once I'm gone I'm not keeping it touch that is it you have a right to edit that's the that's the whole bottom line of the shade you can edit out stuff the Giants leaving all that in made you look foolish poorly oh man I was bad alright Shay what do we have I'm training camp underway for the bears we have a list came out for three players that are likely on the chopping block cuts are going to come up in a few weeks we'll figure out what this roster is going to look like the first of the three players Khalil Herbert we've talked about it's going to struggle to get consistent snaps in the receiving game either as a pass catcher or a blocker feels like that role is going to go to swift and roshan johnson in some combination of the next two guys could be casualties of a bolstered offensive line bears went out got a lot of help that puts Larry Borham and Jeter Carter's futures in question so shot or no shot these players will not make the roster okay so are we saying that Khalil Herbert is expendable like he won't make the roster it's not like he's not gonna play hard cap but I think it's about swift and johnson agreed they wanted to have somebody they deemed to be a better running back than that was swift johnson is by far the best blocker of those three dudes so yeah I could see a scenario where Khalil Herbert's not on this football team or they trade him in a waddle last week's agreed that it's a possibility that Herbert could be moved yeah or just won't make the team nothing against the young man just that you have a litany of running backs here and Travis Homer's a special teams guys so you don't need four correct you need three that's correct in the other choices were what now Larry Borham and Jeter Carter that's a good battle that's a good battle because either one of those guys one's a left guard the other ones are right tackle but you can move them around right there versatile to be able to play other positions spots in a pinch yes man I've been waiting for that breakout Larry Borham game Jeter Carter one of those guys could be cut sure I just don't know which one no question about it just don't know which one no question they've upgraded their depth in a big way Doug Kramer's still hanging in there Doug Kramer the line I still hanging on the last snaps it's center the other day good for him and the last choice was that was it those all two oh yeah that that's a shot that's a shot those guys give a move right any word on emigodjay you got to talk to Courtney about that a 918 yes so there's no timetable for his return this is per pulse but that he is coming along great on his rehab from it toward quad but they were very very happy with his work ethic and how he's been trending in the building but right now not ready to play we so are so hyper focused on Williams in a dune day I'm looking at the entire draft class because we get these a pluses a minus all the bears will stall the draft I'm watching all of them now because it is I want to see which ones besides Williams and a dune deck you pay dividends for the bears correct that's important and the punter yeah he's got he's fine Tory Taylor yeah they love him he's the best that was on the board yep got no problem with it that's it I shake I'm at eberfluse I hope has learned from some of his past mistakes last year everybody was questioning the preparation did they do enough in camp was there enough buy in did they have enough days on task was to go to phrase by eberfluse time on task for all the guys up at camp he said they didn't have it this year it seems like there's a different energy he's been talking about the importance of having his starting offense take reps against his starting defense particularly Caleb Williams and eberfluse says he's got no mercy he's mixing in disguised coverages stunts delayed blitzes post snap switches everything you can do to confuse a rookie quarterback and they're doing it now in camp with their best players so shot or no shot preparation in the off season will not be a concern this season that's a shot he's already said that Caleb's gonna play they also looked at the number of snaps for CJ Stroud and Anthony Richardson which was between 45 and 55 preseason reps in the games and he said that's about where they think they're going to come in at so I don't have any concern about prep I don't yeah I have no problem with the prep what I have a problem with is September 8th let's go like you can prep all you want but if you're still making the same mistakes as a head coach as far as not being able to understand timeouts time and score all those things thinking that those timeouts carry over like old cell phone minutes that's a problem correct it's just now you're in year three it's gotta be better agreed like you have the weapons get out of the way that's right problem right I mean that's your job is it but don't be the reason why the team takes a step back agreed but bad decision making yeah and it sounds like they have upgraded in their analytics department they'll have someone on the headset with him and help him make those calls just like ballot check at his guy and Sean Payton has his got that's what they've got to do I'm just say I'm just being fair because it's not like we have to we can ignore the first two years of ira flus I can't I can't do that yeah are you going to be better as a head coaching year three that's the hope but the idea that while we got roma dunes and Caleb Williams so all is good now all is forgiven no it's not you know when we talk about hot seat coaches I find it fascinating that ira flus is never even in the top 10 it does matter if this team underachieves I don't want to be coming in in December be like you know this ira flus no I'm telling you now in july that this has to get better I'm talking about the way he coaches the team no question about it and I think he would agree with that so let's go man here's Shay norley let's go man speaking of ira flus and a better preparation at camp and the time on task stuff probably the biggest culprit of the time on task term last year was nay Davis who missed time in camp for reasons miss time in OTAs miss time in minicamp after being a free agent acquisition this year things got off to a rocky start missed minicamp missed OTAs fans were fed up there were starting to be rumblings that the bears could be fed up be thinking about moving on from nay Davis especially with all the acquisitions they made this off season well at training camp maybe a little bit of a surprise first practice nay Davis practiced in full shot or no shot nay Davis got the message and came correct that's no shot wait I mean that's one report Shay that's one tell me if that's going to be a theme between now and the end of preseason uh I would completely disagree with my friend I think that is a shot I think he went hold on a second now I got two more years left a 10 million and it's not all guaranteed I gotta get there I gotta get this thing right last year he tragically lost his mother having gone through that it sucks and some people process grief differently that's correct and it really affected him well now he came in and better shape he's ready to go and he wants his starting spot right there right guard sounds like a nice training or camp report but the whole point is is it's got to be a trend not a one day thing yeah a trend we're completely agree with you then he's it's what I call it is it's got to be what we call the stack you stack one practice after another one after another you stack them on top of each other and go oh he's got a whole weekend wow that's it he's got two weeks that's it didn't miss a practice the whole camp see what we do as fans and as reporters I think in some ways is take a look at that one bullet point you see the the column right and then there's these bullet points about individual guys and the bullet point is Nate Davis is in camp and he looks good yeah how about next week correct how about in the preseason correct how about does he make the ball club that matters to me a great is it like I'm never going to fall for the bullet point I'll read it the way it is like okay may Davis looks good today because Nate gave Davis look good in two weeks is he locked in just keep stacking practice is he is he a different ballplay like I don't know the answer until we see it on the field hoodie I live by this philosophy the philosophy is try to be better today than I was yesterday be better tomorrow than I am today just keep stacking good days that's it and how's that working for you great great you have a meeting by the way with Danny later we'll see how great that is I was this is what I was told just rumor oh here's Shay Norland bring your ID too many days off too many days away for the show I think we have a problem here going extra Bob Nightingale wrote up the trade deadline reported that the Cubs have had conversations with both the Yankees and Red Sox about Jameson tie-on falsehoods oh well you said Bob Nightingale right yeah well I mean unless it was you know any sex I would believe it well just well take it on its face here for the sake of conversation the Cubs reportedly per Bob Nightingale having conversations with both the Yankee and Red Sox about Jameson tie-on but have not yet decided if they'll be buyers or sellers tie-on has pitched well this year but he's under contract for the next two years at thirty six million dollars total shot or no shot the Cubs should trade tie-on look what are you giving me for are you giving me like oh my goodness they got who like some top prospect that I was gonna be plugging play next year in my lineup do you think you deserve one four third starter or second a third starter says on a good team tie-on is what on a good team he's the number three you think you deserve a frontline starter for that probably not yes no he's under control and it to trade deadline teams do desperate things oh I know yeah that's bad teams that will do anything to try to win today I am not going to trade a cost-controlled starter that I have for two more years who's pitching really well unless I'm getting something that I go wow I got how many years of control of this young player that I think can be a starter for us if that's not out there that I'm not moving them so again if you trade in you're waving the white flag on this season should you you what you waved a couple weeks ago and then they rallied because of the owl correct the owl is nine and five right now that would mean if the they played at nine and five pace with Otis the owl that would be a hundred and four win season that's how good nine and five is the owls don't weigh better than that team up there and he's showing more fight the owl than Craig has till Jesse got him mad dude did you hurt your hamstrings with that stretch you just made right there how's your hamstrings you feel good now it can't feel that good with that kind of stretch you just made there snow stretch in a stipulation that you just made there with the the amount of wins you'd have with the owl if you could play nine and five every 14 games you're going to win a hundred and four ball games too bad you don't have a nine and five roster we don't which is disappointing at the amount of money they spent uh but tell Nick they could spend 450 million if you're not spending it correctly it doesn't matter Nick uh Shay that's a shot that's a shot because I'm going to tell you right now and we'll talk about this further as we get close and close to the deadline cap if you stand still with the amount of money that's doled out by the the Cubs if you're standing still you get more of the same no we're gonna turn this around next year well you heard that last year so standing still won't get it done and let's say it's not my money of course any uh average cup fan would say whatever you're spending isn't enough I want better players ever as a fan you have a right to demand that doesn't mean that Rick Rick Rick is gonna do that and it doesn't make Rick it to bad owner because I've seen bad ownership in this town I know what it's like when you just completely just put a you know just put the lock on the uh on the safe and not spend anything uh yeah Andy McPhail right thinking that you're the twins and you can win on the cheap no no no no no they spent enough money to be able to at least win this division but a small mark in Milwaukee is getting it done why because they have a way of playing that's solid and sound and the Cubs don't have a way of playing they don't so what I'm telling you cap is is that standing still will not make the grass grow at karkin Addison you got to do something but why because you'll get more of the same Milwaukee is the class of the division I think it's gonna stay that way until the Cubs do something about this okay but my question is I'm not giving up top prospects unless unless I'm getting something that helps me beyond this year I'm not going out and renting some closer in the last year of his deal and giving up a really good prospect not gonna do it okay because I don't think dropping that player now on the 22nd of July on our team fixes this team I don't know I understand cap but I'm just saying you're gonna have more frustrating recaps moving forward if you don't do anything correct but if they don't go out and make any deals okay then they're obviously not all in that they can win this year if that's what they truly believe that Tom has decisions to make because Jed's going in the final year of his contract does he extend him does he fire him does he say hey you got one year to fix this and then when you have g executive in the final year of his deal sometimes desperate men do desperate things there'd have to be and I trust yet I like him a lot but the team he's put together right now that falls at his feet for the second straight year he didn't have a closer and for the second straight year his team's not going to be in a postseason it looks like we'll go around the NFL and then Jesse Rogers at 835 cap and jhood on esp in 1000 and also on our youtube channel you're listening to cap and jhood follow the show on instagram at the capman and at igjhood this is esp at Chicago Chicago's home for sports it both sucks he sucks I'm just a fan I'm not a football about here I love the Green Bay Packers the guy is drunk but there we go this is not Detroit man this is the Super Bowl I love winning he starts to come at a moment this is a really thickly built guy I mean what's absolutely looking for all these things here it's time to go around the NFL right here on the cap and jhood morning show on esp in 1000 and streaming on the esp in chicago app more baseball with Jesse Rogers coming up at 835 he's in the crosshairs of one Craig council as we get ready for the Cubs and Brewers around the NFL with Shane orland and quarterback centric around the NFL today and I want to start with some comments from john harvah of ultimore ravens head coach about his quarterback Lamar Jackson Lamar left practice he was sent home I believe yesterday they said he had a pretty bad illness and john harvah met the media and it really spoke very highly of his quarterback and I believe the ravens and we've always had a vision for Lamar Jackson it's it started with Lamar's vision and his mom's vision when he said he was going to be a quarterback there's going to be a quarterback in high school he's going to be a quarterback in college there's going to be a quarterback in the national football league the vision for Lamar Jackson and it's a vision it's something you see it like it's already happened you can see it like it's already been done the victory has already been won when you pour into a vision and the vision that we have together is a Lamar Jackson is going to be common be known and be recognized as the greatest quarterback ever to play in the history of the national football league no shot no shot did he give that speech on Capitol Hill very odd just the way he said all that very odd was that a question posted him and he's it rolled all that out that's very interesting yeah um well look it's like anything else there's a mic in your in your beak you better say something positive about your players i mean that's what he's going to an extreme isn't it well i mean that's support you say it about your players i'm not not going to say yeah dance me Swanson yeah wait in our vision he's going to go down as the greatest shortstop in the history of baseball no hey man you're just trying you know what that is he's just trying to fuel and try to gas up Lamar Jackson i get that as a coach you know coach speak would you hear it he sees Lamar Jackson but he says boy there's a ceiling art as success maybe i'm not supporting him enough i'm going to step on the gas but if he had said look in our world Lamar Jackson's already done enough to get in the hall of fame well he's won two MVPs yeah that's at least a discussable greatest quarterback in the history the sport stop yourself well that's funny and Harbaugh giving hyperbole never heard it before here's Shane i thought he was going to end that with greatest quarterback in the history of the Baltimore Ravens organization and i would have been like okay i see that vision greatest quarterback in NFL history buddy you just beat your ass in the playoffs you don't remember watching them i take it with a grain of salt it's a Harbaugh saying things not a surprise at Harbaugh saying something would open mic over the top wow what a shock here's Shane Orley we have some quarterbacks here who are expected to this is a funny way of phrasing it they're expected to exceed expectations this season the first is Anthony Richardson in the Indianapolis Colts organization will you exceed expectations after a season that ended early last year but he looked good when he was on the field must exceed expectations from what we saw just the sample size he will exceed expectations meaning that he'll stay healthy he's really good really talented and there were people that felt he was the best quarterback in the draft a year ago absolutely but what does Alex Brown know go ahead Shane oh brice young brice young is the next passer on this list to exceed expectations last year one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL his rookie season kind of sabotaged this year expecting a little more how to brice young he will exceed expectations absolutely brice young will be a click better than he was last year has to yeah he has to be better now he's on a bad team in a bad organization with a bad owner but he's a pretty talented cat now he should be better he's a little guy new head coach Dave Canales same guy who resurrected Gino Smith and Baker Mayfield yeah i like Dave Canales i always thought he was cool does good sideline works for uh for the Bears during the preseason go ahead Jay that's Lou Canales what's that that's Lou Canales this is Dave Canales i don't even spell it the same you don't know wow shay all right here's a here's a fun one because i actually think this might be true i've been talking myself into it unfortunately Roadsell Wilson uh he will underachieve with the Pittsburgh Steelers underachieving means he's like dead professionally yep right like under the bar is set so low just be confident if he underachieves then he's professionally dead i think Russell Wilson has a resurgent year his career is revitalized under Michael Tomlin this will be the most pressure that Russell Wilson's ever been in his career it's Mike Tomlin oh god so long everybody if you mess up just a little bit you're not going to screw around with Tomlin's legacy Justin get in there oh god i think unless he gets hurt i think he plays the the lion's share of the games and he has a good year it's not like he's got the quick hook cap i'm just saying that if it's not going the right direction Tomlin will get the hook just telling you he's not trying to go under 500 in a very tough AFC North agree we are rooting for Justin to get the lion's share of the snake agreed because as a bearish man i want the higher draft pick the four instead of the six i just think Russ is gonna have a good year i do it's only because you spent time with Sierra and put your hand where it was where it did not belong oh my goodness that's a heavy accusation wow i got a lawyer immediately going after the brother immediately i mean sonically the odd cook that was i saw the pitcher check the last fold in my arm i don't think that's where he was he was doing the Travis Kelsey with the hand away from the girl just see that photo yes you must do that absolutely you're not getting me my hands not anywhere close to you you have to do that the last name on this list Jordan love i think is a very tricky one to place because what are the expectations for me i expect Jordan love to be like a pro bowl to all pro caliber quarterback and if he's not then he underwhelmed me NFL best 18 to 1 touchdown the interception from week 11 to the end of the season last year he was excellent he needs to do that again pass first of all you you expect this a year ago i was the guy going pretty good kid you were laughing at me i got can't play yeah it's fine i was wrong hundred percent is he gonna get signed by today today's the deadline right i think he has to get his deal done by today because they start camp i defer to you on that thank you he's pretty good okay i don't know what to expect actually there he might be pretty good i don't know what to expect it's year two yeah i have no idea what to expect there it's like if you asked about cj shroud shay you can say what are your expectations the zxc expectations i expect them to have a really good year that's my that's my thing with love he can't exceed my expectations because my expectations are so high the only thing he can do is meet them or underwhelm yeah all right well we got jesse rogers coming up next right here on cap and jhood and of course jesse brought to you by west coast man's help helping man double you all right we will get to your your jesse's thoughts on the cubs that's helping men with ed for over five years no just double you it's fine he's in the middle of talking i can't i'm not doing both at the same time i got hit right through the water is sparky docked the boat i like the idea of just men double you you could have stopped right there that jesse rogers in the crosshairs of krecht council next on cap and jhood follow chicago's home for sports on twitch at esp n one thousand chicago cap and jhood are back on chicago's home for sports esp and chicago jesse rogers is with us to talk cubs and socks and mlv brought to you by men's health west coast men's health helping men with ed and chronic pain for over five years go to west coast men's health dot com and jesse is on the hotline that be the car x tire and auto hotline rattle rattle thunder matter boom boom boom earlier in the game just like the bats digging like the seventh dinner in rattle there's a time run at second he's looking like you're swinging from the lake there i don't know what do you think about some of those come on jesse come on that's your comment we are wondering about i think that's that's a that's a bad take well that's a bad take he's swinging for the lake that's a bad take it's a bad take why is that why is that he's having a good at bat trying to hit the ball hard it didn't work the pitch or made a good pitch he made it out okay good morning jesse how are you i'm good i'm good i good morning to you guys what's going on jesse i think you got him to show more fire than he's showing the entire season i guess so yeah i guess friday what was the guy's name alfonso or tees uh yeah we're bird or bird or bird or sorry he's alfonso mark yes okay he goes he he embarrassed himself he was a horrifically bad umpire kreg is yelling from the dugout that's low how about coming out of the dugout and showing some fire that maybe it injects the adrenaline into the 41 000 people in there lining their pockets and maybe said adrenaline carries over to your lousy ass ball club i loved what you said yesterday yeah i mean look i'll give you a little background if they had lost the game i probably would have said it a little bit more delicately you know what it's like in a press conference after a loss compared to a win when you win it's a little bit more casual a little bit more laid back and so you know i use kind of that colorful language you know hit it to the lake um but i think it's good to ask those questions even in wins because the manager isn't sort of defensive or thinking about other things like you want everything's cool in that moment at least hey but look you still have these offensive problems should he be cutting down a swing a little bit these were really huge swings with the tying run at second base and just kind of asking that offensive question we've we've all been wondering about this team what what's the problems and with morale it does seem like some but look i wanted to get an answer from him i didn't know which way he'd go i thought he might say yeah he needs to see the situation and cut down or the other answer is that's not who he is he's going to take big swings we could be leading two to one if he makes contact after one of those so i didn't ask the question knowing the answer i asked it because i wanted to know what Craig thought and yeah i used a little bit you know different kind of language if they had lost they probably would have sort of toned it down instead of saying swing to the lake but we got his answer he's okay with those kind of big swings even in a tight game like that so that's okay that's okay i mean i i don't know why he sort of took offense to it but i assume it's because i said swing into the lake which is maybe a little aggressive i don't know uh was there did you ask any follow-up questions or did you get any looks from council for the remainder of the press conference no i did not get any looks you guys know i've known the guy since he was a player so i i assume we're good it was nothing i mean those things happen i mean in fact i guess that's one of the first tense moments in a presser this year right as they think about it it's kind of unusual for a last place team that wasn't expected to be this bad to only have a tense moment or two there should be a lot of tense moments frankly if this was New York or Philadelphia there'd be many of them for for a wholly under-achieving team this seemed like a very sort of um i don't know one that kind of came out of nowhere because again it came after a win so we're just kind of you know it to me it's almost like shooting the you know what after the game you won hey but what about earlier should he be taking those big swings like i didn't think it would elicit that i thought he might say no jess that's who he is it's okay you know what i mean like i didn't think you'd get upset over it but um it is what it is but i there probably should be more tense moments where last place team there haven't been many you gonna wriggly uh for the sub brewer series of course of course jed's gonna talk today that's well give me give me one that i could i tick can i tick off the manager and then in the president back-to-back page i mean again like that should be if you're used to last presser before the trade deadline like he's got to answer some tough questions today so that's going to be the storyline later today at wriggly so i listened to carter yesterday on his interview in-game it says nothing i'm sure he's a nice man i've never met him it's absolutely nothing which leads me to believe they're gonna do very very little at the deadline other than maybe sell which i find offensive jessie that through four years of jet now this team is in bad shape you tell me why i should be optimistic about next year if they trade away a tie-on or they trade away some piece and don't get a lot back other than more for their minor league system it's turning out guys that trying to compete while rebuilding might end up back firing on jed it's really difficult to incorporate young players as you're trying to compete i mean this is why you know pico armstrong needs some runway michael bush just come on strong but most rookies needs a runway and michael bush might take a step back next year you know what i think progress is it linear is is is the thing that the always said so i agree with you what is next year exactly look like as you incorporate maybe o and kasey and matt shaw and maybe kade horton and balisteros the catcher like what are you exactly are you young team you're going to give these young players five hundred abat abats or you're going to try to compete in stun third growth like this is the difficult uh needle he's trying to thread try competing and getting young players into the lineup so jessie does he don't know i don't know the answer cap i don't know does jed get his contract extended does he go in as a lame duck and if he is a lame duck fighting to keep his gig does he make a deal that you're like uh oh like boy he overpaid there like how do you handle this if you're ricketts yeah so first of all i don't think he's going to get fired at the end of the sheer no matter what happens how you handle that if you're ricketts i'm not going to pretend to know we've never been in this situation since jim henry really it's been a long time since he needed he's needed to make that ultimate decision like dio and jed were making the decisions on the manager but tom has to make that ultimate decision i don't know if he goes into it as a lame duck i'm not sure i think to be honest it goes back to that whole being comfortable outrigley there's 38 000 there like i don't know the farm system looks good according to rankings i don't think tom is looking to rock the boat eventually though failure has to lead to changes so that's my answer to your question his his default position is not to make a big change unless he's eventually forced to that's the only way i can read it right now considering we have no history with tom ricketts and and hiring and firing executives and all that stuff but to uh you know we have back-to-back non-play-off appearances though jessie something has to give because you know we talked this morning you know sell by or or stand pat it's big decisions for not just jet and carter but also for tom exactly what direction do you want to take this thing because as is not good enough well think about it i mean eliminate 2020 come on that's a choke of a season so 19 21 22 23 24 that's five straight years and in the middle of those five years you decide to rebuild okay well since the halfway through 21 we're still not any much closer other than a farm system that looks good on paper and that's all it is right now is paper so yeah i mean if if tom is committed to winning or and jet urgency where's the urgency you got to get moving here you know should you be bidding for one solo of course should you have stayed in the old tawny sweepstakes longer of course not saying you would have gotten them but we know they bowed out and probably bow out on the one solo situation so i that's where i don't know where this goes exactly they didn't bottom out and lose a hundred games a couple years in a row and give young players 500 bats they try to compete and rebuild and that is a difficult task we'll take quick time out more with jesse rogers on the cubs and any sach snooze that's all next on esp and one thousand follow chicago's home for sports on twitter at espn 1000 cap and jhood are back on esp and chicago chicago's home for sports jesse rogers with us here on the cap and jayhood morning show on esp and one thousand and streaming on the esp and chicago app still to come and nine 18 we'll talk about uh the bears with corny cronin from lake forest but jesse big cubs will take on the brewers and so i'll ask why have the brewers been so good to sustain themselves in first place all this long what is what is it that the brewers have to the cubs don't they do everything well they don't really have a major weakness now they don't do everything well to build like the fillies do or maybe the Yankees or their orials but within this division they're the best team and team is is the key word there they just do everything well they don't have a ton of superstars um and and you know that goes against sort of my our theory about the cubs like they need superstars well i mean i guess in some ways the brewers do this year with the eligible and william contrarist but they're not really built year to year with superstars so the the answer is if you don't have superstars throughout your lineup you better do everything well they play defense they run the bases it's just all those little things that we'd like to see the cubs do better phil uh no walkie does and then of course they you know a couple career year type of years like william contrares is having so you know they don't have the best starting pitching the cubs starting pitching is better but seemingly every other part of the brewers game is better than the cubs and it's hard i've talked to sculptor like i don't know why the brewers are so good but they are so it's just what they do up there obviously it's it's an organizational thing wasn't just counsel or whatever the case may be so you got to give them a lot of credit jesse in terms of what the vibe is over there at riggly do you think they're waving the white flag on this season yeah i do i do i was told two weeks ago they were indicating they were going to be sellers and then put a little pause on it when they had that good road trip but i think this weekend it's kind of telling again um you're still well below 500 or or a few games at least and in the wild card ratio of all these other teams kind of surging like the diamondbacks are now so i think they're back to indicating the teams that they're sellers i know there's a lot of scouts looking at the relievers hector narrows and mark later junior at the top of that list though i mean it comes with love to be able to trade hector narrows he has a team option that turns into a player option if he gets to 60 appearances he's on pace for about 57 so that could complicate a trade i don't think anybody wants to pay him nine million next year but the cubs would love to move narrows maybe lighter if they get a good deal back who knows mary weathers do back maybe gives teams two weeks and you know they like him you know could they trade a tie-on or something like that i think it's possible could they trade a position player under contract i think anything's possible when you when you are wholly underachieving like this you have to change your tactics a little bit and certainly if they could move velinger i think they would as well so there are some names but definitely uh scouts have been in the stands for those relievers any sax moves well it's going to heat up i mean crochets you know start tomorrow will be interesting for scouts i mean normally kind of know what you're getting but i think people do want to see what he looks like coming out of the break he's pitched what three innings including the all-star game in ten days or so to pitch the two innings in his final start uh we could go friday one inning in the all-star game now now tomorrow so um let's see how he looks i think he's built different everyone's so worried about his innings like not every pitch is the same this guy's big and strong he he's gone from 12 innings to 107 and it hasn't slowed down yet now maybe there's a number that he will um but the the the rumors are absolutely going to heat up starting this week there's no doubt it has been quiet that there's truth it has been quiet all star break was quieter than i thought in terms of trade talk it will start to pick up and the big boys are interested the Yankees the Dodgers the Orioles all those contending teams are lining up for for teams like the white Sox and see what they can get here's my theory my theory about your crochet is is that this whole rotation was set up so that way the Sox would never see crochet pitch at guaranteed rate field again as a white Sox because he's pitching on Tuesday his next outing would be sunday against seattle at home do you have a feeling that by the time we get to sunday that he will be gone i have a feeling he may not make that start i don't know if he'll be gone and i'm just speculating him no insight info socks aren't telling me when they're starting him and when they're not but i've been feeling after tomorrow they're really gonna ramp it down i can't say for sure j-hood they haven't did they haven't forecasted their plans but or they're even a timing of a trade is always hard to forecast but i did tell you guys a few weeks ago i didn't think press gets would wait until the final 48 hours to make all his moves there's just too many moving parts so i do think we could see a true we're in that window where we could see a trade and certainly after his next start there's a possibility so i i can't say about sunday j-hood but do think after tomorrow scouts will have seen everything they need to see jesse i am i think i speak for everybody how disappointed we are in the state of chicago baseball but the socks entered the season knowing they were going to be awful the cubs i have no idea where that thing is headed is bad as it looks come on jesse yeah i i agree and that's why jed's going to have to answer some tough questions today and throughout the second half of this thing doesn't turn around so yeah the path it is path i would say at the beginning this year we saw a light at the end of the tunnel but that was assuming they built off their 83 wins last year now you're like where are they exactly i think that's a fair question to ask the way things are gone this year well i tell you jesse you always find your way into the news don't you there's a little sports show straight a little announcing it's amazing every year it's always something that's not the goal that is not the goal you do not want to be the focus and i i assumed it was an innocent enough question you know use a little color for language hit it to the lake you know i didn't think it would do it get that response but anyway it is more jesse did you get a call from kurchin or someone in bristol about this i did hear from some people out of bristol that kurchin but other people my boy passed and loved it you know of course you love it yeah i love it anyway we'll see we'll see fire up jenn today i'll i'll leave it to someone else i yeah inadvertently ran into it yesterday no i'm kidding i don't ask the pro i will ask the proper questions that the situation calls for right and the situation isn't good right now with the cups jesse here's the question do you feel like your job's on the line a do that's a great one and b if you guys don't do anything at this deadline other than subtract why should the fan base be invested that this team can be good next year and sylvie wants me to ask about counsel's role is it getting everything out of counsel that he expected yeah these are these are all good questions and i think jet gets it like you know this jet understands where they are in the world here in the cup in the baseball world in chicago it's not very good and he has to answer those questions no doubt jesse is always we appreciate the time okay boys have a great week talk to you later the bad take jesse rattle rattle thunder clatter boom boom boom for bastard the bad take the very the bears broke camp this weekend with big expectations that's in two minutes on the cap and jay good morning show come on jesse
