[music] The Chicago Bears are trans. Stephen A, I totally disagree with them. They are not trash. Absolutely not, as you're listening to Captain J. Hood on ESPN 1000 WMP and WT. BCHD2 Chicago with Chris Black Jonathan Hood with you Chris is in for Cap. 3, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, ESPN, 3, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6 is our telephone number. Thanks so much for being with us here on this Monday. We hope that you're going to have a great week. Chris is in for Cap as we talk about the Chicago Bears. Still to come, something that Shane Norling is doing that I can't believe, but it seems like everyone's doing. We'll talk about that this half hour as well. But Chris, here we are with the Chicago Bears. Train Camp will be opening very soon for the rookies. But there's still big questions that must be addressed. Sometimes it feels like summer lasts forever. And then when you start to hear reports of football players showing up for a training camp, you feel like, "Wow, the end of the summer is within sight." That's what happens tomorrow. The Chicago Bears rookies report to Alice Hall for training camp tomorrow. We are waiting to hear on Roma Dunesé and both Dunesé and Kayla Williams on whether or not they've signed their rookie deals and whether or not they will be there tomorrow. For the start of training camp for the rookies. On Friday, everyone reports and everyone will be there. The first practice is on Saturday. So here we go. This is the week. Bears week. Football is back. And we get to prepare for the Hall of Fame game and then start charting towards the start of the NFL season. So thank God, Chris. Thank God because it has been a long, long summer already because the baseball has been so bad. Because I've always told you, "Just give me something interesting for baseball to get me to train camp." Yeah, unfortunately. I haven't had that. Yeah. The baseball teams in this town have not really provided that. The Cubs have been, what did Jesse say, gave them a D for the first half? Yes. And then the White Sox have been an extreme disappointment as well. But yeah. So, you know, a lot of people look at baseball to get them back to the football season. I look at Summer League and basketball. I try and find my way. Did you see Bozzellas last night? I did. Well, we'll get to that at some point, maybe 10 or 2. But I think this is what I wanted to ask you. I have five questions heading into Bears Training Camp, rookie's report tomorrow. Okay. And it's going to be a major sorghur and keep our eyes on. So I gave you these questions earlier today, but now you want to kind of dissect a little bit more on what we're talking about here. Number five, does Vailas Jones Jr. need a great training camp to make the team? That was number five. Yes. Let's talk about Vailas Jones because the thought process from Vailas Jones is he's a seasoned veteran with a little tread on the tires and a guy that has some experience at being good at special teams. Yeah. Never expect him to be this great whiteout coming up, Tennessee. I expect him to be able to provide some speed to help Justin Fields. I think it's going to be a battle for him, Chris, because outside of a couple of Cordell Patterson plays, we're handing the ball off for him to run. I mean, you already have some speed offensively, the wide receivers, and with a swift at tight end. Is he expendable if he's not great in special teams? I don't think we've seen enough explosive highlight plays to offset the mistakes. Yeah. And I think that's the problem is that if he was less mistake prone, then I would say, yeah, he was drafted by this group, he'll stick around, he'll make the team because maybe he can give you an explosive play. The fumbles. I know there were less last season than two years ago, unreliable hands as a receiver. You know, okay, jet sweeps are nice. Yeah. But don't you kind of think with this offense that if you have three wide receivers on the field for most plays with Rome, Keenan Allen, and DJ Moore, that either DJ Moore or Roma Dunes A will be those taking those jet sweeps. It's a scarlet letter now if he's out there because if you see Bayless Jones in offense, that's like, I know what he's out there for. Yeah. He's either going to try to dig out the defense or they'll actually utilize them for short yardage for a first down and you don't need him for that if you've already got the requisite speed on the roster. Pearson, tell me I'm wrong. You've lived through this history as I am. Yeah. Think back to the last couple of decades. The Bears have always had a quote speedster on the offensive side. And sometimes they can't catch. And when the speedster enters the game, what do you think's coming and end around to the speedster? And then he's tackled five yards behind the line of scrimmage by a linebacker who read the play correctly and just stayed home. Like that, that to me is something that we saw as Bears fans for like the last 20 years. Oh, that speedster's in the game. He's not actually a wide receiver, but he's in the game. Wonder what's going to happen. Oh, here we go. Quarterback, fakes a hand off. And then here comes the wide receiver around and then gets tackled seven yards behind the line of scrimmage. That's why if he's not just a special teams player, Chris, then what, how does he fit in this offense? He does not. I'm looking at the depth chart. And of course, the reliable one is our lads. Our lads.com. Oh, yes. Dan Shonka. Yeah, because it's always updated. No matter what, there's nobody that's injured on this depth chart. Like it is on ESPN.com. Are you saying that Courtney hasn't updated the depth chart on ESPN.com? You guys always give her a crap word. I don't think Courtney is the one organizing that, is she? It's a bit. No, I know. I'm just defending Courtney in this moment. So no, she doesn't get defended. No, absolutely not. She did a great job this morning on unsportsmanlike. It makes me on the drive. It just makes me sad when I see the ESPN.com depth chart because everyone's out or hurt. Yeah. So that's what. Yeah, I don't like that before the season starts. So I would say that it's going to be tough for him to make the team because, like I said, if he's not just special teams, then can't you find someone else? Yeah. I think you can. And then you're also hoping that Scott Lasher, who you drafted, maybe he turns in. He's in that role. He's also someone who had the drop sees last year. I mean, seems to be a consistent issue with wide receivers that we've drafted in the past. Hopefully, Roma Dunes A changes all that for Bears fans. Did you notice that Dante Pettis crept himself back onto the roster? Yeah, he is. I don't know if he's going to make the team. Well, it's like Tyler Scott is either blank or get off the pot now. Yeah. And listen, we go back to that key play fourth down, if I'm not mistaken, and that Scott did not catch the football in that game, Fields put it on the money against the Lions. That was the kill shot. The Bears would have won that football game if he catches that. I would prefer someone else more short handed in that spot, but that could have really solidified Scott, even in that game to be somewhat as reliable. And I just think, I just think that it's either now or never for Tyler Scott. Beautiful throw from Fields, too. It was. Number four. All right, let's go to the next one. Number four. Davis. Hold on to the starting right guard job throughout training camp. Okay. So, and people are listening and probably saying, well, why is that important? It's important because you want to, just like you have for Justin Fields, you want to make sure that there's a lot of production for this new rookie quarterback for Caleb Williams. It's important for this to be the case. And the reason why is because Caleb Williams, he's got to get used to the speed of the NFL too. What's best to have a veteran right guard that knows how to protect the right side of Caleb Williams and keep him and keep him comfortable in the pocket? You know, I think that Nate Davis has a lot to prove here coming from Tennessee in and out of the lineup last year, personal issues this time this year, this time last year, Chris, we're talking about his personal issues that he was not available. But when he played, I thought he played well enough to be able to keep that spot. Now, there's another little competition. I got no problem with it. I feel like Nate Davis will find a way to survive. I'll say this. You mentioned this in the last question that Ryan Poles has been open about saying that this roster is going to be a tough roster to make. Yeah. If that's the case where there's open competition and it's difficult to be on this team, then Nate Davis has to show up and he has to play throughout training camp, right? You can't approach training camp the way you did last year where when he was there, he didn't really do much. Now, off the field issues aside, when you're there and present, you got to participate and that's how you're going to make the roster. So I think this will be a storyline we will follow throughout camp because I don't trust that he will be active when he's there every single day. If I told you that from left to right, it's Braxton Jones, Kevin Jenkins, Ryan Bates is a center, Nate Davis is right guard and Darnell right at right tackle. Can you roll with that? Yeah, I can roll with that. I can roll with it. Because that might be what we're going to see against Tennessee first game of the season. Davis has to be there and he has to practice, like get in there with your guys. You know what I'm always concerned with with this, Chris, is the quality depth and whether or not you have quality. Even at the wide receiver spot, what we talked about, what DJ Moore, Dune, say, Kenan Allen, now look at the other side and it's Valis Jones and it's Tyler Scott and it's DeAndre Carter and Donte Perez. And I'm always concerned about, like, somebody goes down, what's next? Will it be? How big the drop off is going to be? And at the offensive line, I'm glad that Paul's picked up Shelton, Matt Pryor's on the team. You know, I'm glad that Larry Borms still there. You're still there. So I'm glad that there's some depth there. Hopefully the drop off is notes. That's so bad that the offensive line can't hold up there in the bargain. Yeah, and I think that is where you look to the defensive side. There are stars on the defensive side, but also there's depth. Yes. If you look at Terral Smith, you look at guys like Sanborn or Dexter Pickens, Booker, there are names who are younger players who are going to be fighting for time on the football field and like that enhances the entire group. So I think you're right, depth within the roster is definitely upgraded on the defensive side. Will they show up offensively? All right. Number three. Will we notice a difference in the Shane Waldron offense? He's the new offensive coordinator throughout training camp. Will we watch practices? Will we hear reports where we notice that the offense is different from what we saw last year? Okay. What do we remember about his time in Seattle? Well he improved quarterback play from Geno Smith, a quarterback that was on the scrapheath and Geno Smith. It's one of the better quarterbacks in the NFC the last couple of seasons. So that's one thing. He doesn't ditch the run game. I think that's also something that's notable. That's what I pull from it. So for any quarterback it is paramount to protect the football at all costs, to be able to get the ball out quickly and to be able to have command of the huddle. I mean you want to get touchdowns and you want to be able to, you know, matriculate the ball down the field obviously Chris but the point is those that to me it's got to be training wheels on Caleb Williams first. I know that so many people are so excited about Caleb Williams and what he could be and thinking that he's going to be, you know, it's going to be fireworks in the sky as soon as he gets on a, you know, it's over the field and gets on an NFL platform but I still think the fundamentals have to come first. The sum of those off-platform plays and which he could be able to roll out in the pocket or roam for 40 yards, some because the offensive line a couple of years ago for USC was strong enough for him to be able to get those plays down the field. Not so much last year as you well know, but a couple of years ago for sure. Now with the speed of the NFL game I want him to be able to do the little things. Like what Justin feels the thing that was so maddening is, is that just no value of the football. Not enough. Right? Offensive line is part of that but also Justin feels the athlete thought he could be able to make plays all platform and then lose ball, pick six, all those things. I just want Caleb to be able to just do the little things first before we get those big plays. I think that's good enough against Tennessee in that first game. Even though they're ready to knock his head off as you saw a couple of weeks ago those quotes, right? They're already talking trash. I mean, it's July. Yeah. I love it. Oh. That's a bear's fan. I love it. Yeah. All right. What is next, sir? Number two. Let's find help on the defensive end opposite Montez sweat from within the roster. I know a lot of conversation has been, who will the bears go out and sign? But can they find someone here in camp, Walker, Robinson, Booker, can someone step up in camp to the point where we all look around and say, hey, maybe they don't need to go out and sign someone opposite Montez sweat because this young player stepped up. The question Chris I would have for you is, is, is Yannick and Gakway as good or better than the backups on this defensive line for the bears, meaning that Montez sweat is one guy. Sure. But what about Trevon Dexter, Andrew Billings, Demarcus Walker, Dominic Robinson? Yeah. It's affordable. If you want to sign him, he's available. But do you believe that the backups or some of these other young players are as good or better than in Gakway, because in Gakway, you could have for a song. He's still out there, right? I think in Gakway is better. Okay. Yeah. I think he is. And I think the road will lead us back to signing in Gakway for another one year prove it deal. I think that's what happens. Now, listen, there's nothing wrong with development, but here's the thing. If you did all of this by trying to show up your running back room with a veteran by making sure you have three wide receivers, a backup tight end, three offensive linemen, trying to shore up your secondary with by yard and others, then why fall short on the defensive line? If you're going to do all that, just keep moving forward and say, okay, now we have an anchor. Got sweat on one side and Gakway on the other. We got Billings who we like. If you're the bears, we have a solid blind backing core with Edwards, Edmonds and Jack Sandborn. Just lock down secondary with Jalen Johnson as good as anybody at the top of their game in the secondary. Let's move forward. Why come up short? Why I say, yeah, but you know, in the defensive line, yeah, we're good. Keep going. I'm with you on that. Totally agree. Unless someone like Robinson or Booker plays like they're a star in the making throughout training camp. But you're right. Now, and I think in Gakway is a better option. Go sign in Gakway. You have the money. Do it. Now, the question is, why hasn't anyone else signed in Gakway? Injury concerns? Is that why? Maybe. The music comes to a simmer. We talk about it in Gakway. That that part of the music means a question mark. Yeah. Shae Norley. Couldn't that be true for all the edge guys though? They typically take until the second or third week of camp. Nobody signed Ogba out of Miami. Nobody signed Cam Jordan. Yeah, and Gakway is not the only guy still sitting out there. Yeah, I mean, I would imagine most teams want to take the approach that I'm suggesting in the question and hope that a young player, year two, year three, wherever the case maybe or even a rookie, like an awesome Booker, give them a chance to show up the camp and see if they can handle the position and there that's the most cost effective way of doing it. You got young guys on the roster, win the position. And finally, number one, finally, how much progress do you expect to see from Bears quarterback Caleb Williams in his first training camp in the NFL? You answered the question first. What did you think of Caleb Williams two years ago? Would you think of him last year because those are two different Caleb Williams two different USC's? Was it not? Yeah, two years ago, he was the best player in college football, absolutely total stud. He almost could do nothing wrong, running backwards, running side to side, flinging the football's 60 yards, just blindly, like everything worked. Last year, he was sloppy with the football. He held it low off of his hip a lot when he was in traffic. And then also when he would scramble with it, we all have heard many people reference back to the Notre Dame game. It was messy in the first half. If you go back to two years ago against Notre Dame, he completely controlled that entire game with his arm and with his legs. He ran for three touchdowns that day, but it wasn't like he was scrambling around like a madman. He was in goal line situations, reading the defense, realizing that all of his guys were covered and he had an open alley. And he could find a way to get into the end zone. That's the quarterback I want to see through training camp. I also want to see a guy that values the football. Take care of it. Don't throw it away. And I know interceptions will happen in training camp. It's practice. But when you get to the preseason games, when you start getting into those more important practices with pads on where they're kind of amping up a little bit, take care of the football. That's what I'm looking for. And then we'll get to star plays as the season goes. Let's worry about being a mega superstar later. But let's make sure everything's, you know, play within yourself type of thing. I think that that is correct. As I mentioned to you before, Chris, I just, I think that just the little things have to occur first. I know that, you know, when you're a young player, whether it's basketball, football, baseball, that everything's a three point shot. You know what I mean? Everything's a touchdown. Everything is, look at me, I scored highlight real stuff. I'm just trying to be able to give the best highlight to Instagram I can because once the game's over, you know what I'm going, I'm going right to my phone and I'm going to look at the Instagram reels of how great I was, right? Because that's what it's about. I don't care what's what we're talking about, especially young people. That's the thing. And look what I did. But look how far I shot the basketball. Look how far my, my putt was to be able to get all this stuff, right? Caleb Williams, it has to be the little things. It's not about IG immediately. It's about, hey man, he threw a 10 yard pass. Hey man, he scrambled out of the pocket, was able to connect far first down. Look how you move the chains. It's not just trying to get, you know, six points in all in one play. You have the weapons, but he had to utilize them accordingly. You know what? Does that make sense? Yeah. No, you make perfect sense. And the one thing that I think all of us Bears fans can remember back to is training camp last season. You recall that as each day passed, and training camp continued on and we crept towards the new football season, we were never getting the reports that Justin Fields was getting it. We were getting reports that this was sloppy that day, miscommunication this day off target here. They weren't really a lot of chirping from the defense because they weren't smooth. I don't need Caleb Williams to be perfect throughout training camp, but I want to hear that he is improving, he is looking good, he's making some good reads, he's making some decent throw. You know, like he's taking the safety valve and dumping it off to a running back instead of just holding it and then scrambling around for a sack, stuff like that. That's what I want to hear throughout camp. And that's our look around the NFL with five big questions, and by the way, there'll be another five tomorrow, big questions with the Chicago Bears. Sure. About that, Shay. We can do it. You want five more tomorrow? I trust you. I won't be a part of it. Oh, so you're not a part of it? You don't care? I set up just saying, yeah, that sounds good. Yeah, it sounds great. He just separated himself. I won't be here. It just so, you know, it's a Shay Norling Incorporated, not cap and J good. Hey, just so, just so you know, I won't be part of it, but yeah, it sounds good. Sounds like a great show. I'll be rebuilding Appalachian State. You won't be listening. Yeah, I'll be listening. Well, again, now, now disingenuous with the audience. Yeah, right. Now lying to the audience. I will. I'll be listening. You won't be listening. Of course I'll be listening. I'll be listening. I'll be listening to your White Sox Weekly show on Saturday. I just said I'll be listening. You said it, but it's not true. Yeah. But you see what happened there, Chris. You see what happened right there, right? Yeah, I know. You could have gone with the improv and just like, yeah, sounds good because tomorrow. Because there's still more on the bone to talk about the bears, but yeah, I won't be here. Well, I won't. What are you guys doing? I mean, jump off a cliff. I'm so, I don't know about you, Chris, but I'm so glad to be a part of Shay Norling Incorporated. I'm just happy to be here. Yeah. I'm just nice. Incredible. I like it. Sounds like it's going to be a great show. I'll be listening. Yeah. Yeah, sounds like it's going to be a great show. I'll have no part of it. I'll be listening. It's too bad though, right? Shay, we are going to talk basketball for three hours tomorrow. What do you think? No, maybe 15 minutes. Yeah. Who's here in replace of you tomorrow? I think Kevin Z back. I'll have to double check. All right. Kenny Sixpack. Did you hear your go call on that on Friday? I did hear that. Kenny Sixpack. Are you doing what Shay Norling is doing this week? We will explain that next on Captain Jay Hood. Captain Jay Hood on that. Appreciate you guys. I listened to you streaming on the ESPN 1000 app. Chicago's home for sports, ESPN Chicago. Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with Chris Black. In for cap, I am Jay Hood. We're with you until 10 o'clock that my Greenberg comes in at 10. Harmony in your go 12 to three into Peggy and Waddle from 230 to 630. Don't forget we have the home run Derby as well on ESPN 1000. Black and Abdullah off today, no black and Abdullah tonight or tomorrow because of the home run derby. And then the all star game is tomorrow night. You'll hear it right here on ESPN 1000 sidebars are brought to you by a kid law. Three, one, two, six million for the greater Howard, ain't it? Yeah, I approach. You may sign my ball. Yes. Are you going to approach with something or? No, I'm trained by listening to this show that that's what you say when when ink and law comes up, you know, Chris, they always say, and you hear an old adage and you roll your eyes at it or make you may take heed to it. But deaths do come in threes. The three pack. Yeah. I mean, so over the weekend, we get Richard Simmons, the workout king for the 1980s. Sure. Richard Ruth who died at 90s, 66 therapists. And the thing about Richard Simmons, first of all, about Richard Simmons, I mean, he's vibrant and he's he's got his colorful like, he's, uh, here he is. And he's got his little, you know, shirt on and he's got his little short shorts and he's coming here trying to keep you comfortable and make you make you work out because he's so vibrant, right? Is that really Richard Simmons on the clips? Yeah, of course. Because whenever you guys would talk about the bachelor, you would always play. Yes. I didn't know that. Yeah. That's outstanding. Dr. Ruth, which who seemed 96 when she was in her 50s, going on these talk shows back in the day, just someone, a little old lady talking about sex in the most interesting ways. That's that was her appeal. I agree. As a youngster, you learn a lot from Dr. Ruth from back in the day. I don't think kids today have a someone of that age teaching them things that you need to know with various lubricants and whatnots saying that on an open mic, right? Like, I don't think young, I don't think Gen Z has someone teaching them like that. You know, television is so wide open, even on the network level, it's so wide open. I say what you want to say almost. But Dr. Ruth was saying these things, but in a clinical way, yes, where it wasn't like you couldn't bleep it out because it was true. It was fact. What she was talking about. She'd also have the show and tell. Do you remember that? Do you remember that? You'd have a little props? Donahue. Yeah. I remember that. Yes. I too recall that very much so. And then Shana Doherty. 90210. A little charmed if you are an expression. You know, about charmed. I was never a charmed fan because I was just waiting for TNT basketball to start up. Well, that's the thing, right? Here's what's funny about charmed. Or bones jumped in there. Huh? The different show. No, I know. Yeah. So charmed, by the way, anytime that I've seen a full night of action on TNT, you turn on the TV the next day. What's charmed doing on there? All reruns, right? Like, oh, because I watched basketball last night. Yep. Yeah. So 90210. And that's why Evan Cohen's off this week because he's like the biggest 90210 fan that you'll ever find. So he's off this week in morning of charmed doherty's passing. That's one. But just the idea that when I say death comes in threes, I mean, you got a three pack right here on the weekend. Yeah, it is. And I always. I mean, a Z pack, but she got a three pack of deaths right there. Three pack of deaths on the weekend. It's very strange. Well, I always think to myself when stuff like that comes around whether or not we just associate that they happen in threes or if it really does happen like that because didn't weren't we a couple of weeks ago with Jerry West? Wasn't there a Jerry West Bill Walton week? Or am I a week on that like Bill Walton and then someone else important passed away very closely after that and Jerry West. Jerry West and Bill Walton. Yeah. And there was like, um, it was Willie May's, right? Willie May's. Yeah. Yeah. Like, and then so you say, oh, it happens in threes, you know, like do we just say that or I do not want to sound offensive here or do old people just pass away sometimes? Yeah. You see what I'm saying? Like, I think both can be true. So then we, we just associate it, but when you get up there in age, like what Dr. Ruth was what? 96. You got that's a run. That's a hell of a run to the point where I haven't heard from her in 10 years. So I'm saying like 96. So you know what, J. Moore, you're correct, it is Willie May's. It is Bill Walton and like Orlando Cepeda, Cha Cha Cepeda. That's it. Also that's it. That's it. So you, so two giants died within seven to 10 days. Yeah. Somewhere in there. Yeah. That's, that's, yeah. So I think it does, you know, you get yourself a three pack of deaths a lot. Celebrity deaths. It's very odd. Yeah. I mean, it's very odd. Dr. Ruth, Rob and Sugarland, Texas, listening on the ESPN Chicago app. All right, Rob. Good morning. Morning, fellas. Glad to be back on the grid again after borough last week. Absolutely. Absolutely. Are you outside? Can you hear some birds, Sherpa? You outside? Yes. I'm out for my morning walk listening to you guys. Great show. Awesome. So help educate me on these rookie contracts. What do they gain by not signing? I mean, if they're slotted, they're slotted, so is it play or sign or what's, what would keep them from not just signing these things and do they technically become hold out beginning tomorrow? Hold in. Hold in. I guess if they don't sign, but they show, they would be a hold in, which is what players do now. If they don't show it all, then yeah, they'd be hold out. Rob, to use your question, offset language, bonus structure, I think that's what they can negotiate. But you're right, for the most part, the contracts are kind of set based on where they were drafted. I'm just not sure that's how you want to start out with your new team by, you know, being a hold in or a hold out. And I don't know. It's a number one pick, especially quarterback in the last couple of years ever done that? I don't think so. No. Not the number one pick. Yeah. So I don't know. It just seems to me like you want to sign and get in there and get to work and don't create a thing, but it's what it is, I guess. Great show. Thanks, Rob. I would say, Jonathan, the reason why that's important is we have had such great vibes in this offseason for the Chicago Bears. Don't let something like this deter the larger mission, right? Let's get into camp. Let's prepare. We get the extra week of prep because of the Hall of Fame game in the preseason. Like let's continue on with the good vibes. Let's get everyone there in camp. Let's, let's move forward. It'll be on hard knocks. Will you be on hard knocks? I don't know. That's the bigger question. Have you said something today with hard knocks folks in town? Have you said something that's worthy of being clipped and placed on hard knocks? I don't know. I don't know. I just think it'll be kind of funny. See, I'm in a, see, I'm somewhere around here is just like serious, but I'm just here because I think it's funny. Do you think they clipped the Dr. Ruth sex talk that we were, that's the hope. It's the lead. Is that way? Yeah, the lead. Is that way? They clipped? We now go to Chicago. In Chicago. All they talk about in Chicago is Chicago Bears football, and then they play a clip of us talking about Dr. Ruth. Hopefully. Rest in peace. 96 still to come Shays doing something that I think a lot of people are going to be doing this week because there's a big game, a big game that's going to be right in front of us very, very soon. We'll talk about that this half hour and more as we move forward here on the cap and Jhood morning show. We'll have the cap and Jhood cut of the day right around the corner here on Chicago's home for sports, ESPN 1000 with Chris Blackin for cap, I'm Jhood. What we saw on Saturday afternoon, Chris was incredible, and I saw the story of President Donald Trump there and having his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. I was watching the bear. I told you before the show, are they beginning the show that I was watching the bear, trying to catch up on it because I knew we were talking about it. Sure. So, Peacock and I are watching the bear, and I saw it pop up on my phone. I said, okay, we've got to pause this because we've got to go over to the coverage. So I stopped Hulu and I started watching the coverage and amazement. I mean, where were you when you first heard about the story of former President Trump? He's there. He's talking to his fan base of the election, the rally, and then that happened. Yeah, I was at home, and I was just finishing up watching the Bull's Summer League game, and I think NBC News were the first ones that started in with live coverage, and I sat there and I consumed live news coverage for about three and a half, four hours straight. It was absolutely surreal. Whichever side you land on politically, that's something that is a moment that I think a lot of people are going to remember, and unfortunately, stuff like that happening in this country is monumental as far as moments in pop culture/political, the political realm where it's a terrible thing to see and someone lost their life. Multiple people were injured. Former President Trump was also injured in this situation, and fortunately, he moved his head at the right split second. I mean, what a unreal kind of thing to watch unfold live. Shay, where were you when you first heard about the news? I told you I was watching something else and had stopped the show just to be able to watch the full-on news coverage. I had just gotten back from the White Sox game. I had White Sox weekly pre-imposed. I stopped, got some dinner for myself, got home, sat on the couch, I'm ready to relax on wine Saturday night, just going to hang out with the dog. It was a long day, ready to just kind of chill out and shut the old brain off. So I get on my phone after I walk the dog, I scroll to Twitter, I see the video, and I go, oh, turn on the news, and that was the next three hours of my Saturday night. And I kept thinking, I cannot think of a time that I spent three hours on a Saturday night glued to the news. Yeah. Jay Moore? Yeah, I was driving around, and then I got the alert on the phone. So I got the Sirius XM, so I just, on my presets, I had to see it in, and Fox News, and was just listening to it all during my commute. Just crazy. You know, guys, what happened on Saturday to President Trump, happens to kids on a regular basis, or innocent bystanders going to school, or going to work, or just standing around living their best lives. It happens to first responders, it happens to students, it happens to loved ones on a daily basis. Hell, it happens to my cousin, the police officer for a Chicago, Ariana Preston. She's off of her shift. She's on her way home, and she loses her life just because she was just walking home after her shift, serving the city, because it happens to our political leaders and their followers on a daily basis, and the discourse on the issues of the day shouldn't result in an attempt on someone's life, but it does. It does. Yeah. I mean, that's what I said. I also think it felt very, like, yesteryear, like this is not something you expect to happen in this day and age, because, like, the last time something like this happened was '81 with Ronald Reagan, where there was an attempt, but, like, I feel like it's like the '60s and the '70s, stuff like this was happening frequently, unfortunately, and so, like, that's one thing that I thought of, and then it's like, it was just an outrageous thing to kind of witness and watch reporters, and eyewitnesses kind of unravel, like, what actually happened in the moment. Yeah, I know that many in our audience have seen assassinations live on their TV. You're talking about the '60s, civil rights leaders and presidents, and they saw it live on their TV. I saw it on the news at the age of nine, coming home from school when President Reagan was shot in 1981, and I saw that, so this is the second time that I've seen this, and again, there's been other shootings and murders that we've seen and read about and heard about for a long period of time, but, you know, for people's lives, Chris, for some, it's like a finger scrolling to the next story on Instagram, or the next story on TikTok, thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers, and it's too bad that that happened, it's on to the next one, but let me just say that your opinion on anything, your opinion on anything, is not worth getting shot or killed over. I mean, there's such thing as being able to support a party or support a person, ideology, but the idea that you're so extreme that you'd want to be able to kill someone because of someone's opinion or because of someone's ideology is just way over the top. There's not a word to describe past extreme, how bad that is. Saturday, for a young guy like Shay, or like you, Chris, it's the first time that you've seen kind of coverage like this, but the point is that if it's a former president, if it's someone in Congress, if it's someone that's down your street, the idea of gun violence and someone dying just because of someone's extremism is totally out of bounds. Someone should not lose their lives based on someone's opinion, but it happens every day. A part of what makes this country great is that we can disagree and then debate, right? And that goes into that line of thought, is that it's okay to disagree with people and to debate different viewpoints and different topics, but yeah, you're right, like in, I'm 39, so we all live through 9/11, certainly for the most part. I know there's some gensiers who are probably listening who are not around when that took place. The last time I can think of watching wall to wall news coverage of an event like this would be the Boston Marathon bombings and then the week that happened after that where the search for the two individuals then like closed in and I think that was on like a Friday night where reports were, what were their names, a black hat and white hat because they both had different ball get that they were like spotted and then there were different police reports around Boston that situations were taking place, a police officer was shot and there was all this different stuff like I remember watching the news coverage from that but besides those two events, I mean that that's probably the last time. Chris, that was probably the most bizarre one of my lifetime. I was at Michigan State at the time and it's like freshman year, dorm like hall, right? And you'd think all these kids in college are just going nuts and doing whatever. Three doors open on the floor, every TV is on CNN. I'm like walking up and down the hall and it's all these 18 year olds all watching CNN. I'm like, this is bizarre. It really felt like the first time a news event where TV was trailing social media and trying to figure out what actually was happening. Do you understand what I'm saying? And on Saturday you saw this as well where there were eyewitness reports from people who were standing near that structure and you know, TMZ had the video then yesterday and it was out there and people were piecing together on their own without the news organizations telling you what took place and when the Boston Marathon bombings happen, I remember being on like live streams on social media where there were people following along and charting what was taking place and then the news media wasn't necessarily leading the coverage. Well, I think the bottom line of all of it, however we're able to consume it whether it's radio or streaming or as you and I are both the news hounds, I know you're watching news on a regular basis and so do I because you want to know what's going on in this world. Just the bottom line of it is that your opinion on anything is not worth getting shot or killed over and we almost, we had a tragedy and it could have been something that we could all remember where a former president is shot based on his opinion ideology. You're listening to Captain Jhood. Welcome back to Captain Jhood, you're officially locked in on Chicago's home for sports, ESPN Chicago. It's now time for the Captain Jhood cut of the day brought to you by Chicago cut steak house. What is the more valuable real estate, getting on hard knocks or the Amazon Prime video pre-game show where they have the little clip of radio hosts talking about the game. What's the more valuable real estate for us? The Amazon. Because I think more people are watching the live coverage of a book or game than hard knocks. I like both of them. I like to get on either one. I'm telling you right now. I'm telling you right now. It's every blue thing. If it doesn't work out for none of the playoffs, I'm telling you he's going to be fired. It's a big spot for the Chicago Bears, we're on hard knocks. It's a good schedule. We play the Titans. I cannot wait. Bears to the playoffs. Down the Packers. Here come the Bears. That's what you want. The Chicago Bears are trash. You got out of there. I'm telling you right now, that's all anyone cares about. The only thing that matters is, can you cut a clip that gets featured on hard knocks? I can't wait till Sylvie's back from vacation and we get the social media video of Sylvie's side stepping his way in front of a hard knocks camera. Right? I mean, listen, Danny, why is Chris in the video? And that's all folks, the Captain Jay would cut of the day brought to you by Chicago cut steakhouse 300 North La Salle in Chicago is where you go.
