And before we talk about anything else, let's settle this right now, because right up to the time that Justin hit the button for the open, it's been hot and heavy in the studio. Hot and heavy, Cap, you recall this, just moments ago. Yeah, you and Shay, as I just watch, as always do it, like the child on the side of the road, watching you two go after each other about certain sports topics. Hey, it's not angry, it's not frustrating, it's entertaining for me. But now we have to bring this to the audience because we have to sell this now. It's interesting that the Sox are playing the pirates here over the weekend, and unfortunately for me, I can't see Paul schemes in person against the Sox 'cause he pitched yesterday. And he was dominant against Milwaukee Brewers. As a matter of fact, if I knew that schemes was pitching in Milwaukee yesterday, probably would have made the drive up to see him in person against the Brewers. I didn't know he was going to be this dominant, Cap. He had a no hitter with 99 pitches when it was pulled. He was that good against the Brewers yesterday. Yeah, he was incredible yesterday, incredible. They beat the Brewers, what, one nothing. He was fabulous, and there's people on it, so why did they take him out, they should have let him. Dude, he's a rookie. He's around for a lot bigger things in his career. Why would you push him 100 through seven? He's at 99. Okay, he's minimum to get the no hitter, probably minimum 130. Why would you do that? Well, you can understand why fans want to see him go all the way because they want to be, they're already entertained by how great he is. They don't look at it practically like the ball club looks at it. I fair to say, I mean, if you're already invested in why this guy was dominant, he's got a no hitter. They want to see him finish the job. No one in the stands are sitting there like, oh, you know what, they should pull him now because we have to look at his pitch count. The average fan that's got the beer in the Bratner hand is looking at Paul Skeens and like, wow, he's, he's unhittable. Correct. Could you imagine if he went all the way and he gets pulled and the average fan feels like they got gypped? Correct, because they don't look at the way the ball club looks at it when analytics go wrong. Correct. I mean, but that's how it is in 2024 cap. We turned the clock back 10, 15 years ago. That guys go through 120 pitches, dominant, so long everybody with a no hitter. Right. But it's different now. This guy first takes Shay in there. Greatest rookie ever. What are you out of your mind? I said he's on pace to be. He's actually not. He'd be the best rookie ever. He's not. Just, there's no, okay, then who is? Find me who the greatest is and explain to me how they're better than what Paul schemes is. Okay. Will Chamberlain as a rookie led the league in scoring, rebounding and was the MVP. Okay. The reason why that she says this just for context and you guys can keep going. Six and O with a 1.90, he all right. He struck out 12 batters per nine innings. That's what he's doing right now. He had seven no hit innings with 11 strikeouts against the Brewers. He's outstanding. I love watching him pitch. But this automatic, he'd be the guy. He's the greatest rookie in the history of sports. That's like so ridiculous. Camp. Ed Belfor is a, we want to stick Chicago, led the NHL as a rookie in wins, same percentage goals against and won the Vesna as the best goalie in hockey. I mean, stop it yourself. Okay. Mark Fidrich, 19 and six with a 234 and 9.6 wins above replacement. 9.6. Where do you think skiing's gonna end up? We'll see. Because right now he's pacing better than Mark Fidrich or Dwight Gooden at 84 if you want to go that route. We'll see. He's pacing better. He could win the NL Cy Young. He's got a 1.9 ERA. He's got the second best strikeouts per nine in all of baseball. He set a franchise record for Pittsburgh. Eight straight starts with seven plus strikeouts. One of two pitchers in MLB history to have multiple starts of no hits and 11 plus Ks. The other, Nolan Ryan. How about Mike Traut is a rare game? How about Mike Traut is a rookie? 10.5 war, 27 doubles, 30 homers, 67 walks, 49 steals, 326, 399, 564 slash line. I mean, come on, what are we doing here? Yeah, there's been great starts for pitchers in the past cap and we mentioned Dwight Gooden at 84. I remember his first start where the Cubs bludgeon Dwight Gooden at Wrigley Field. And then from there, 7-1 with a 1.170 ERA through 69 innings. And he was a strikeout king, Gooden in 84. Hideo Nomo in 1995 with the Dodgers after the strike. If you remember Nomo, the windup he had, the funky windup he had, had a sub-1 ERA 6-0 in June. Batter's hit 143 that month. He allowed 207 base runners and with 236 batters. This is in 95. Yeah. So again, this is a rookie campaign. Fernando Valantuela with the Dodgers in 81, Fernando Mania. And again, Paul Skeens is off to a great start and the reason why he's not going to throw, Shay, over 100 pitches. But from what he's doing, that at a time that he's on the mound, six inning, seven innings, he's dominant. The most dominant pitcher we have in the game right now. Well, that's it. It's the efficiency of it that he's getting through. Like, nobody's ever going to throw a bunch of complete games the way that they used to. Nolan Ryan throwing whatever it was, seven no hitters. It's not going to happen anymore. It's just not. You're not going to throw 130 pitches and have those opportunities as we saw last night, especially a rookie. You, they have to protect the arm. They're not going to stress him. But he's getting through six or seven innings a start with eight plus seven plus strikeouts. Every single start, he's the most dominant pitcher in Major League Baseball right now, with the lowest ERA among any starter. This kid started 11 games. At what point can we go? This might be the best phenom. We've built a phenom, had this hype stuff. 11 games in, he's the most dominant pitcher in the sport. Now, here's the thing, Cap. This is doing this, and I'll give skiing's credit. He's doing this on this middling pirates team. It's not like he's getting a lot of help. He's just doing his thing. True. I mean, so there's why he's dominant. Fernando, good Dodger team under La Russa. The Mets 84, they end up winning the World Series 86, was it? Remember the Mets? The Mets won it in '86 against the Red Sox. So, I mean, so the team that was on the rise. But I like what both of you are saying. There's no doubt that Paul's skiing's. And you think about it, Cap. We were just talking the other day about starting, but we're talking about Corbin Burns for the Orioles. That's what I would consider a dominant pitcher, and the Cubs got to him. Gary Cole's on that list. Spencer Strider for the Braves on that list. Zach Wheeler on that list of quality starters. But then you compare that to what skiing's is doing as of late. You can't-- it's undeniable of how good that he's been. And this is armed with a lot of good starting pitching in baseball. But the start that skiing's on is really special. He's tremendous. His score right now is 3.1. In 11 starts, he's worth three wins. That's unbelievable. Yeah. Mike Trout was 10.5 as a rookie. You know what, 3.1 and 11 starts translates to, if you were to come up opening day and have 36 starts, 10 wins. OK. Mike Trout was still higher. I mean, let's stop with these. The greatest rookie after 11 starts in the history of this sport. That's just dumb. It's also apples to oranges, pitchers to hitters. Mike Trout plays every day. He was dominant, but he wasn't this dominant. I mean, this is insane. He's the only one of two pitchers in history to have multiple starts of seven of no hits and 11 strikeouts. He's had 11 starts in his career. He's one of two pitches in history to do it in the season. And, Cap, you feel like there should be more of a body of work before you get there. Yes, 100 freaking percent. Yeah. Well, here's the difference between our generation and change generation. He is happy. And I think we're all pleased by what we're seeing with Paul Skeens because Paul Skeens is must see. There's no doubt about it. You want to know what his numbers are. You don't have to be a Pirates fan to appreciate what is really a special pitcher at this point in time. And no question. You watch him, even if you don't watch the game, you'll say, OK, how did Skeens do? Because that's a must watch right now. You want to follow what he's doing because he's off to a hot start. However, we know how quickly that can fall off the table, Cap, because you know how great these hitters are today. And which is like, OK, I've studied this guy, or I've faced him a couple of times. Now I know what's coming. That always falls back, Cap. You don't stay up there forever as you will know. Yes. Offense always wins. They'll always find a way. He's had an amazing start. Start. I make sure I tune in when he's pitching. Sure. He's awesome to watch. To call him the greatest rookie in the history of sports at their 11 starts means you got up this morning and you hit the bong hard. Did I say he's the best rookie already? I said he's building a case to be the best rookie we have ever seen. And again, my challenge is to you, Cap, find someone who had better numbers. I've given you like five. Because no, you really haven't. You gave me trout and skiing is going to match trout's wins above replacement, potentially, as a starting pitcher every five days, every six days. That doesn't work for me. Look at each row's numbers as a rookie. He was rookie of the year and MVP at 242 hits. Come on. Yeah, it's slappeter, though. OK. Freddie Lynn led the league as a rookie, an OPS rookie of the year MVP. I mean, come on. He just called out each row punching Judy. Wilts Chamberlain is a rookie average 37.6 points and led the league in rebounding. That's fine. That all sounds about as dominant as what Skeens is doing. Skeens is going to average triple digits on the fastball. He might have the lowest ERA in the sport. He's going the win rookie of the year. He could win an outside young. He could get MVP votes if he ends up with an eight-war season on this team. He's going to lead the league in strikeouts per nine. What's the difference? This guy is shaping up to be one of the most dominant rookies we've seen ever in sports. That's a different argument. One of you stood right here. There's an indentation in the carpet where you stood right here and said, most dominant, best rookie of all time in sports. Listen, he's the best I've watched. And I've seen plenty of guys get built like this. Bryce Harper, Strasburg, gets sold like the way that Skeens was. This dude's insane. You agree with that, Cap? He's outstanding. I've never doubted that. Is he better than Shota? I'll take Shota. Oh, no, you would not. Game seven of the World Series. You can start either Paul Skeens or Shota. Hey, that was a thing too, by the way, before the show started. The idea got steel. What? Yeah, exactly. Oh, good old Hawke Carroll said, Hawke Kaplan here. We said, like, seventh game of the World Series, would you go with Skeens? You said, no, you want to have someone more experience. Game for your life, you wouldn't go with the hot Skeens. You'd rather have someone with experience. That's what you said. I would, all kidding aside, if you gave me Shota or Skeens, I'll take it Skeens, obviously. But you said someone with more, even a Shota, didn't have that experience. That major league experience. Correct. But if you had game for your life, Skeens, or game with my life on the line? Yeah, game for your life. Zach Wheeler or Skeens? Kerry Wood is out. Like, you can't go prime Kerry Wood. You can't. Definitely going Skeens there. No, thanks. I'm taking prime Maddox. Yes, yeah, I'll take Maddox. Give me Game 7, Jack Morris. Yeah, that'll be fine. And I'll bring my towel, I'll wave it. Yeah, I'll take Jack Morris, and I'll let you look at my ring. Yeah, that's fair. Jack-- oh, so Jack Morris over Paul Skeens? No, but I'm just-- I'm making a joke, because I do-- With my life on the line? Yes. I would also do. He's one of the great elimination game pitchers ever. It's like Justin Verlander in an elimination game, or Paul Skeens right now. I'll take Verlander. But of all the pitchers today active in the game, who would you take over Skeens? Not many. He's great. But you call him the best rookie of all time in sports, and that's idiotic. There's Zach Wheeler. There's Scooble. Skeens, Skeens. And I like Scooble, but Skeens is really good. Class now, Skeens. Yeah. You're going to have Skeens. I got a sod. You're it. [LAUGHTER] I got I'm your a sod. Yes. Where would you play him? Where would you play? How does Skeens? How does Skeens fit in my rotation? I got Steel. I got Imunaga. I got a sod. Jordan Wicks is back to throwing. That's exactly right. Yes. You don't need that. Hey, Wicks is on his way. Wicks. Wicks. Spry as he will. He'll Wicks. That's right. You know what? Skeens would be a good bullpen guy. Yeah. Ty Olds throwing a heck out of the ball. That's exactly right. I can use him as a kind of like a sixth inning guy. Sixth inning. Yeah, set up. Buddy, we can't trade for Paul Skeens. We got Kate Horton on the way. I can't trade Kate Horton. He's our future to take that. That's it. That's it, man. That is it. What's so odd about your ball club is that the starting pitching is solid. Outstanding. Team still uneven offensively. Not in this past series, but that's been the hallmark of this first half. When you run the two, they outscored the Orioles. That's just very odd. OK, so here's the thing that's got to be disheartening for you. You have to be happy that the Cubs were able to sweep out the Orioles. One of the best teams in the American League. One of the best teams of baseball, quite frankly. They're the second. They're the number one team in the AL. And I think number two in baseball. OK. Now you have the Cardinals coming up. And then the All-Star break. What a time to stop the momentum. That's like you've got already lit. You finally lit the torch this season. And now you're going to hit the brick wall of the All-Star game. Let's go out and take care of business today. Wake up in your hotel in St. Louis. Grab a cup of coffee. And find a way to win a damn baseball game. Let's go. Otis is six and one, by the way. The power of the All is again real. Six and one since Otis joined the party. Otis the All. That's it. That hoot little louder because he's six and one. He's not going to hoot much louder. He realizes the All-Star break is coming. He needs a little break. He's had a very, very intense 10-day period by the time Sunday rolls around. This portion of Captain Jay Hood is brought to you by the Tootsie Pop. How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie roll center of a Tootsie Pop? The world may never know. Thank you. So even the old Wise Owl knows when it comes to going to win and how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie roll pop. That's correct. Could Paul Skins be building a case as the best rookie we've ever seen? What's the best rookie season you've ever seen? And we've mentioned some already. But it's just a sock's luck. We don't get Skins to see him at guaranteed rate with the Pirates in town. Correct. Ah, that's too bad. How was it going? Who starts the All-Star game? The Skins start he pitched on Thursday so he'd have Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday off. He'd be on regular rest. The Pirates want to minimize his workload. Does he start with all the hoopla and everything? Or does Shoda in Menaga get started? Oh, God. He's not pitching this weekend. He's going to be on plenty of rest. He pitched Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. He'd have five days of rest pitching on number six. That's why the good Lord made, you know, third and fourth innings. You bring it showed in and relief. You're starting. Skins. Here we go. Skins are shown again. I'm seven for your life. Bridge to foreign baseball, bringing the Japanese baseball into the family. We're going to take on the Pirates of 6.30 pregame right here on the home of the White Sox ESPN 1,000. We're talking if you're just joining us, how do we get into the Paul Skeens conversation? Well, that's the overflow for the meeting that we had right before 7 a.m. It just happens to be that the Pirates are in town to take on the White Sox, and we won't be able to see Paul Skeens start. But we're talking about Paul Skeens, and Shea says that this is the most dumb-- he's on the way to being the most dominant rookie we've ever seen. And your thoughts are-- it's 11 games. Relax, first take, Shea. Geez, 11-- he's been awesome. There are not many guys. I make sure that when I'm at home, and he turned the Pirates game on. The who? The Pirates game. This kid skeins his pitching again. I love it. I love watching him pitch. He's awesome. Through 11 games to say he's the greatest rookie in the history of sports is one of the most insane, ridiculous, idiotic things I've ever heard. Again, I didn't say-- I didn't stamp it. I said he's building a case. He has to continue. OK, and if a rookie gets five hits in his first game, he's building a case too. Guess what? He's done 11 games. That's-- no, that's different. But that's how you felt about Michael Bush, when he homered five straight games. A six. No, actually did. Six and oh. Six and oh, with a 1.9-0 ERA, he's striking out 12 batters per 9 innings and was dominant. If you're a Brewer fan listening and you're there or watched it, you know how good he was. He was unbelievable. He was on his way to know hitting that team. But the other side of that cap, and I know that unsportsman like talked about this earlier, like, oh, you know, let him keep going, it's just that the way modern baseball is. I would have liked to see him know hit the Brewers, but I mean, that's not how things work. He's on a pitch count, and it's like what's happening with crochet. Why is crochet on a pitch count on a dead-ass ball club? It's because they know he's never gone this far before, and they're limiting his pitches. That's correct. I mean, and Pedro's had to wear it a lot to try to explain why, but this is where the modern baseball is. We talked the other day about analytics, and just whether they're good and bad of analytics. Well, that's one thing where you unplug the entertainment out of it as a fan. The entertainment is that you like to see someone, if you're going to go that far, finish the job, you're not allowed to finish the job in today's baseball. You're not. And that's unfortunate because as the fan, I feel like I'm being robbed, but I do have the mindset to understand how the ball club feels. We can't have him go 130 pitches. We don't blow out his arm because he's on 100 pitch or less process. I get it. Totally. That's all I understand. Totally. 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N-3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our telephone number, the best rookie that you've ever seen. Valparaiso, Indiana. Here's Patrick on Cap and J-hood. Hey, Pat. Oh, hey, hey, hoodie. Hi, Cap. How you doing? What's up, Sparky? What's up, Pat? Thanks for checking in. You betcha. Hey, so I would like to throw Marc Friedrich as an option for the best rookie I've ever seen. Yeah, he was incredible. That is legit. There was a nine and a half war. He was incredible as a rookie. And I think he only started a handful of games the rest of his career. He blew his arm out. And there was no surgery like they have today. He won 19 games, and I think it was 76. Yeah, that's correct. It was 76, yeah. And yeah, I was an eight-year-old. And that just solidified my love for baseball. Actually, I'm a Tigers fan, too. I'm a transplanted Michigander. But yeah, it was electric. And I remember, like, national TV, which the Tigers were middling at that time. So when they were on Monday night baseball against the Yankees and they shut them down, it was just awesome. Yeah, it was incredible. Absolutely incredible. We appreciate a telephone call. Yeah, 34,000 on a regular basis at the old Tigers Stadium in the C. Fidrich pitch. Oh, it was a guy that he would manicure the dirt. Oh, dude. I remember when I was in high school, I went out to pitch. And I got down on my knees and I was manicuring the dirt because 76 was Fidrich. I was 78. Yeah. So it was still fresh at everyone's mind. And I remember our head coach, the late George Galla. He said, what do you think you are? The bird? Crimeity yikes. Let's go. Yeah, that's a strange way to say that, that phrase. That was his crime. Crimeity yikes. That was his line. In Berwin, his JR on ESPN 1000, JR, good morning. Yo, what up fellows? Hey, the best-- I mean, not the best. But one of the best players I've seen as a rookie man, is Randy Moss. I mean, when he came to the NFL, it looked like it was a man playing against little boys. I mean, he was just going up. And that's where the term Moss comes from. I mean, it's just he was so dominant as far as going and get the ball. It just looked like he was playing against little kids. He was just a rookie. I had never seen nothing like you. I thought it was awesome. And he was one of the best I've seen. And thanks for the call. He would have been a bear. He overslept his breakfast with Walter Payton. Rest in peace. Remember that? Yeah. He came into town. All right, we want you to meet with Walter Payton, because there have been a lot of character concerns around him. And he missed breakfast. He's overslept. Get out. And they didn't draft him. Yeah. I think they took Curtis Ennis that year, if I'm correct. Check that, Shea. Boys, boys, check that. OK, Carmen. You know, that's it. We got a computer for you. Boys, I think it was Ennis. Was it Ennis? I'm not sure if it was Ennis. Was it Ennis? Was it Ennis? Back after this. Check that I was as Ennis, guys. You know, I think it was the 24s or 25s. I don't care. Carmen, get off of it. 3, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, he has seen this. That's a awful number. I love carps so much. Morgan, Martin Grove. Here's Lewis on a cap in Jhood. Hello, Lewis. What's going on, Jhood? Cap, what's up, man? What's up, dog? How are you, Lewis? Looking good, Lewis? Feeling good, Cap. Beautiful. Hey, one thing I would want to say is, as a pitcher in baseball, I think Jhood mentioned this. But the more time you'll know this later, if he's a good pitcher, is to constantly stay as good. Because once it's off and figure that pitching out, that would determine his decline or upright on how good he is. But what I determined-- what I use to determine a good rookie is when, for example, when Derek Rose-- Derek Rose to me is one of the best rookies ever because when he played, he put fear on other people. Like, they didn't want to guard Derek Rose. There was no guarding Derek Rose. He was so explosive that he was too quick. He would make you look silly. And that, to me, as a rookie, when you go into a professional sport and you put fear on people that's been playing that sport for years, and they don't want to guard you because they know they can. They don't want to make themselves look silly. That, to me, will determine who is the greatest rookie of all time. I'm not saying that Derek Rose is the greatest rookie of all time, but I'm just saying he's on that conversation. You know what I mean? Yeah, you guys have a goal. Hell of a player. He was. A lot of fun to watch, dude, man. Hall of Famer? Who, Derek Rose? Absolutely not. Hall of Famer. The basketball hall of fame doors are wide open for people, but they will be shut for Derek Rose, unfortunately. Yeah, that's like a divvy bike. Everybody gets a ride. I mean, it's crazy. But he knows he's not a-- he would have been. That's a call back to our Chris Sale conversation. That now the hall of the very good has allowed him. Leave Jack McGrath alone, poor guy. He's not even here. I'm telling you guys, I really believe that Chris Sale's got to be-- No. You know what? Maybe Jack might be right down the line, but just not now. Our standards are so different, Cap, than the average fan, average young fan. The standards are just different. I mean, the Hall of Fame is the best of the very best, correct? Why did you get in the Hall of Fame, Cap? The best of the very best, the tippy top of your profession. When you get that star, when you get that accolades, because you're at the top. So? I believe-- I think you're the first one to say this to me, and you're right. When you go-- you give a player's name, you go, Hall of Fame. Oh my god. Yes. He was the greatest. You don't go, maybe. If you've got to go through the research and just think about it, then it's no. It's no. I actually like that as a rule. I've always said the baseball of fame is too strict, because they have the arbitrary rules. But the NFL's got it right. It's basically, were you a top three player at your position for a long period of time during your career? If yes, you're in, if no, you're out. Yeah, but you can say top three. But at certain positions, there are guys who may not be top three. But there's so many amazing players at one time that they are Hall of Famers. Top three, I can't put that arbitrary top three in it. I can't. That is interesting when we have the quarterback conversation about guys like Philip Rivers and Eli Manning and Matthew Stafford, because it's not their fault. They played alongside Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Correct. But if you've got to think about it, then it's no. Then it's no. That's just-- I mean, it didn't move on. Well, I think there was this game that it wasn't his fault in the coaching. It's no. I'm more with hoodie on this. Just move the conversation along. There's this ringing your hands to try to figure out what to put someone in the Hall of Fame. You don't have to do that. You know the best when you see it. You know who it is, just like my partner, the Hall of Famer David Kaplan. I'm Jay Hood with you. We've got more. If you're on hold, you will be on the air. Don't forget to shout a no shot at 8 o'clock on Chicago's home for sports. Captain Jay Hood on the ESPN 1,000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Pistol scores is E-Smoky, E-2 Cap. I didn't remind him. He didn't play the music pad. I feel quick right now. Sure, go ahead. There you go. Keep the hell. Keep the music going now, Justin. Jay's headline, headline with Captain Jay Hood. E-2, that's awful, too. Oh, that's the-- Hold on a second. Hold on a second. I'm speaking. He fades up on it. So now that's bad, too. He clipped it. Yeah, clipped it. So now two errors. That's it. Two more. Two more. You'll be like Bob Renly trying to play third. Wow. Otis the Hall moved to six and one. The Cubs might be the hottest team in baseball. Jay, after dominating the Orioles in a three-game sweep out scoring ball to more, 21 to 2. They've held them scoreless last 24 innings as they've won their fourth straight game. Cubs 45 and 49, four left against the Cardinals starting tonight in St. Louis. Then the all-star break comes with only three games out of the wild card. Take that, Jay. The White Sox are back in action tonight against the Pirates. That's late for the haters. They don't face Paul Skeens who threw seven no-hit innings with 11 strikeouts yesterday. He improved to six and on the season. And an all-star manager, Tori Levolo, is reportedly taking Skeens into consideration as all-star game starter. Who knew? Angel Reese, thanks, Chris. Angel Reese, continue her double-double streak. It's steady, it's 15 games. The Sky fritter away a 14-point lead. Lusted delivery. 91, 76. You have former NFL d-corner Monty Kiffin. Father of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin passed away the estimated age 84. Kiffin known as the architect of the Tampa 2 defense that the Bears now play. Smokey. [MUSIC PLAYING] Captain Jay Hood on the ESP in 1,000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Thanks so much for being with us here on this Friday morning. Taking your phone calls, we've been talking about Paul Skeens. You say, this ain't put sports radio. That's not the reason why pirates are in town. And the Sox won't be taking on Paul Skeens. But we had the conversation before the show about Paul Skeens where you place them amongst the most dominant rookies we've ever seen. Jay feels strongly that it's the most dominant he's seen. He's on his way to be the most dominant rookie that we've seen in sports. And I don't know about that. Well, my friend Jay just texted me. I'm right next to you. I'm not sure why I want to text you. We are Jay Hood. Oh. This is Jay Hughes. Oh, Jay said to me, my guy, yes. Jay Hughes said, it's got to be Pat Mahomes' cap. His first year as a starter, 5,000 yards, 50 TDs. Pretty good, kid. 5,000 yards and 50 TDs. You can take your Paul Skeens and get out of Southwest flight out of town, Jay. I'll take Patty Mahomes. I think it's impressive that Skeens has a 6-0 record with a 2 ERA on a team that's as good as the Cubs. Yeah. Or as bad as the Cubs. I really want to put that. And I believe his first start. He was battered about by the cup for five runs. Was he not? That's correct. That's correct. And that's when they were in the throes of their offensive woes. So take that, Jay. Jay's taken a lot. It's only 41 minutes into the show. I'm taking a lot. He was battered about for five runs as a 190 ERA. I didn't say it and have a 190 ERA. I'm telling you, he was battered about for five runs by the Cubs. Greg and Lake Forest on Cap and Shae Heens. And I've got out of here. Stop. What happened the next time he pitched against the Cubs? He beat him. No question. Hello. What's up there, Greg? I tried to introduce you, Greg. But you got caught into the fray, Greg. So you got caught up. But we'll take your call now. Thank you. I've thought Magic Johnson playing the center in the NBA finals was pretty special. But then I just thought, you know what? Angel Reese might be in that conversation too. Who? With what she's doing, Angel Reese. In the conversation, we're best rookies of all time. The way that Shae is putting it. OK, Greg. But Magic Johnson would be my choice. Yeah. Let's leave Angel Reese to the side. She's having a wonderful year. She's not the top 700 rookies. OK, let me see if I can-- I got my Greg from Lake Forest Dakota ring on. So let me just see if I can figure this out. He's saying that because Paul Skeens is off to a great start, 6-0 with a sub-2 ERA, that that's the equivalent of what Angel Reese is doing with her double, double record that she's had in the WNBA. I know what he's doing there. And you know what? That's not funny. That was bad. She's trying to go after Shae back mixing, like, oh, well, you know, Paul Skeens is like Angel Reese with the sky. She's doing just fine, thank you. Another double, double. She, as she scratched to 10 pointed 10 rebounds yesterday against the Liberty. Lake in the Hills, here's Dave on cap and J-hood. Hey, Dave. Hey, good morning, guys. What's going on, Dave? So, you know, Cap, you got your Otis, the Al going on. At the same time, you got your Al. I canceled Marquis because I was fed up with them. But now, my dilemma is if they win this next series of the Cardinals, I might have to get Marquis back. Another thing is I, myself, own an Al, and I have it in my garden. And I was thinking, maybe we can travel to St. Louis and bring our Als and maybe pull that series off. I want your dirty Al leaving the garden. Just leave it out in the garden. We're good. Otis is on the case. Man, we're good. But get Marquis back. Absolutely. No, I'll be wet. I will. Come on, man, you're either all in or you're not. Either you're a Cub fan or you're not. They could be all went on. I'm a Cub fan forever. I've been a Cub fan before they were winner winners. So that, man, it's just that-- 15? Sooner, later, you got-- When did you start? 15, you got this White Sox. [LAUGHTER] Yeah. We gave up on the White Sox. What about the White Sox? I said, you gave up on your White Sox. You're not watching them. I'm trying to watch Marquis. You mean, because he didn't give up. He watches every game. He may not be cheering as vociferously because he's mad at him. But that man right there to my left, all in on the White Sox. Always. Yeah, but they've been put out some bad, bad, bad games. Doesn't matter. We watch every game, man. Every single game. And if you're a Cub fan, get Marquis, watch the games and be a fan in or out. They could be all in 150. And I'm still watching, still cheering. Will I hold them accountable? Will I rip them? You're damn right, I will. Well, maybe I'll watch them, but I won't pay for it every month. Well, I'll trade. OK, well, you do what you want. You want to get a legal cable? Go ahead. I mean, don't stop when you're hiring your neighbor's cable. Go ahead. I mean, no one's stopping you, Dave. Well, I don't watch them, and I've got to pay for it. OK, well, then get the fuck up in the neighbor. Exactly. It's fine. Right. Just support your team. That's all. Go ahead, tin foil, stand on a roof, whatever. Just support the team. Exactly. Either you're in or you're out. The reason why that you have Marquis or the reason why we watch an NBC Sports Chicago is because we watch to hold them accountable, again, for the good and the bad. Correct. And if they're mad at me because I was critical of them, too bad, I'm going-- I'm a diehard. I'm with them through thick and thin. Does not mean I won't be critical. You know why it's a good Friday? Why? Not because you see you and I are together for the Friday. Is Tracy's coming in? No, it's-- Wow. Well, it depends on the weather. We'll see. The reason why it's a good Friday is because we get hired from Skokie on ESPN 1,000. Oh, Howard. What's up, man? Hello, Howard. Somebody from 1931. Now, probably 1972, '73, a man named Ken Dryden comes in, wins the Stanley Cup, wins the MVP. I mean, I know hockey isn't put that popular in the city right now, but either it's got to be Ken Dryden or maybe the great one, Gretzky, when he comes in and takes over the whole league in his first year. You see that? That's why it's a good Friday. That's perspective, Howard. That's a great perspective. Thank you, Howard. I have one equipped player. John, I have one complaint. Yes, sir. Monday mornings at 7 o'clock, it's very confusing when you're at two channels at the same time. I'm not sure if I had to win to drink before or just half a sleep, but, you know, outside the field confusing. Thank you very much. You realize? OK. Do you realize, Shay, while you're lathered up for Paul Skins, Wayne Gretzky had 51 goals and 86 assists in 79 games in his first season. Do you realize how insane that is? That's crazy. That's probably number one. Paul Skins ain't even in the same league with that. He's in the same league. No, he's not close to Wayne Gretzky. If Skins keeps up what he's doing right now, it'll be one of the more dominant seasons we've seen. Now we're down to the one of the more. Not the-- he's the greatest. No, I'm not. I'm all tired. I'm not saying one of the more dominant rookie seasons. I'm saying one of the more dominant seasons end. And that would put him in the same conversation as Wayne Gretzky scoring 50 goals as rookie year. But he has to complete the process. He has to finish the season as dominant as he is now. I hate being this guy, but I'm going to be this guy. Imagine if Skins was on the Phillies or the Dodgers, because that greatness would continue, Shay. That's the thing, like you could be able to see this play out into October. Yeah, that's the thing that's going to hurt him is you have the guys like Magic Johnson, who were on the Lakers and had the opportunity to go deep in the playoffs. And Skins isn't going to get in. I mean, it'll be a nice regular season run for him, but imagine that run in the regular season going into the playoffs and him being the number one starter and mowing down the competition in the playoffs. He'd be that guy. And let me give you another name. I know Hoodie will know the name. You've never heard of him. His name is Taimu Salani. Remember what he did as a rookie? 76 goals. Oh, and by the way, I'll give you 56 assists just for good measure. How many rings don't cap? I don't know if he ever won a ring, did he? He played mostly in Winnipeg, right? Yes, he did. Yeah, and like I'm not saying it's my way or the highway. People are welcome to disagree with me. I'm just for me. Oh, they do. If he stays this dominant, it's going to be one of the most dominant pitching seasons we've seen in like 20 years. If you're on hold, you will be on the end of 20 years. This guy moves the goal post. Again, I'm not even saying. No, but I'm not saying one of the most dominant rookie seasons in 20 years. I'm saying one of the most dominant seasons period in 20 years. He keeps this up. I'd like to break it if we could on the Captain J. Hood Morning Show. Shot or no shot coming your way at eight o'clock right here on Captain J. Hood as we go back to the phone lines and talk to you. We will say hello to Joey G in Melrose Park on Captain J. Hood. Joey, good morning. - Hey, Joey, you made him to still self. Do you want him to blow up the team? - That's it, me. You're the one that psycho on the radio talking about it. I'll be in a lucky charm. - Oh, he's more in a lucky charm. He's part of the family, kid. Get with the program. - You know what, he used to be part of your family, now I'm like a distant cousin in Colorado. - Oh. - Going back to Wayne Gretzky, he did not win Rookie of the Year. His first year in the NHL, due to playing a full season in the previous year in the World Hockey Association. So he won it in his second year in the NHL. - Okay, thank you. - Going back to the Cubs, we got to call Acme right now, is there hot? And blow up this team and get some pieces. - Yeah, how about that? - That's just a bad take, Joey. Three games out in the wild card, kid. Otis is on the chase. - How are they out in the wild card? - They're going to beat the Orioles and you think they're going to win the World Series. - I'd ever said that. - You can't ask him to be patient when you weren't patient two weeks ago. - Yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no, wait, you cap. You can't ask Joey to have patience when you had no patience for the Cubs two weeks ago. That's not true. - Two weeks ago you were called for Fred Hoyer to have a meeting with you in the office. What are you doing? - You can't do that. - Okay, and he didn't give me the meeting, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. - But this is the kind of guy you were. - Yeah, that's right. I take matters into my own hands. - I got the oldest out of the case. - You're the only man. - This country loves you two guys. The whole country, the guy in London, this is what you are. - Thank you, Joey. - You're one of the best. - Thank you, Joey. - Thank you very much. We love you, Joey. - Bruce in Tampa, Florida, listening on the ESPN Chicago app. Hello, Bruce. - Hey, good morning. How are you? - What's up there, buddy? - Oh, God. - Hey, first of all, Joey needs to take his medication before he calls. Not good. - All right, that's number one. - I want you to remember this. The year was 1969. - Yeah, the Mets. - Because we're in first and the Mets. - Yeah. - Okay. And what happened with the Mets from last place? - They went like a freight train, 38 and seven, the rest are 37 and eight, the last 45 games and won the division. - They're 69 cups. - There you go. And here's another thing why the Cubs are going to do it this year. 1969, 69 is 15. 15 to nine is 24. It is 2024. The Cubs will be number one. Retribution is coming back. - Okay. - Well, you know, the reason why that they're going to win up, they had those 120 games. That's the reason they melted in the sun in August. Son of a bitch. Cubs are 69. - Wow. - Thank you, Murph. He's right though. The Cubs melted in the sun in '69. - That they did. - He's right about that. - Phil Regan ran out of gas. - But you don't, but now you're armed with some night games and some rest, but you don't have it in the tank to do that cap in a winnable division at the time. You don't have it in the tank to get there. Sorry. And that's why Joey G and Shay and others say, where are you really going? - I don't know where we're going. A year ago at this time, the Arizona Diamondbacks didn't think they were getting to the World Series. Two years ago, the Philadelphia Phillies fired my friend, Joe Girardi. They didn't think they were going to World Series. They did. Guess what? Get the win trust debit card out of Mr. Ricketts desk and go buy some bullpen help. Maybe get a bat with Ballinger out. Let's go. It's a fricking ATM over there, 1060 West Addison. I don't want to hear anymore. - Well, we've got to keep it under the laundry. - No, you don't. Nope. Your three games out in a wild card. You're starting to play really good baseball. You've got some people coming back in the bullpen. Whatever we need, I don't want to hear we can't afford it. - That's fine, but the old adage of Fumi wants, shame on you, Fumi twice. - And if I need a really nice new all house for Otis, I won't want to hear, well, there might be one on Sailor Bernard's. No, I want a nice one. - Jed's been there before. And the Cubs have been there before. Remember this last year? Please don't trade us. We're good. What about this year? - This is different. They're not going to trade guys. - Okay. Shout out no shot in two minutes on Chicago's home for sports. [BLANK_AUDIO]
