And welcome back to Shea that W for winger Norley. Good morning. Glad to be back boys. How are we feeling on a Wednesday? We're awesome, man. All, you know, all of us in here with except for J. Moore, help. He enjoys his vacation. You know, Shay, the guy about over your shoulder. This Jack was it. Jack. Pottinger Jack Hunter. So this guy. Jack John Jack McGrath. Was it Jack McGrath? So this over this guy over here. Jack was channeling you doing a Shay Norley impression yesterday. Just trying to just just get everything stirred up. We just say, Jack, just I understand that Shay programmed you before he left. Just be Jack. That's the problem. He's trying to be you, Shay. And I would just say that you are one of a kind. Let you just be you, right? Yeah, like Matt Nagy says, be you. This guy here over your shoulder is trying to but Chris said on the Hall of Fame. I said he could eventually be a Hall of Fame. No, you were pretty much like an eight-pitch as well for two more years. He's in two or three more years. He wins a couple of sighs. He's got your whole thing. He's never won one. He's 35. What are you doing? Shay, go into his apartment and bring Jack's volume down a little bit. Thank you. I know you programmed before you left, but he's haywire a little bit. Just program. AI Jack is a little bit out of control. AI Jack's insane. Yeah. He's not insane. So, Shay, just program after the show. He's trying to be you, and I'm like, there's only one Shay. Don't do that. You want people to be individualistic when they are in your spot, right? Let them be themselves. Now, I'm just trying to see if I agree with Jack that Chris sales of Hall of Fame. OK, well, Shay. He's not. And Chris, Shay, I'll do an interview. Here's how it works. If I say Chris sale, and you're not sure, then it's no. Thank you. And Chris sale went on intentional talk, was it? Believe so, yeah. And those guys, you were Hall of Famer. He said, no, I'm not a Hall of Famer. Even with the standards downshade, like there's no more 300 or 250 game winner, that's not a Hall of Famer. It's going to be tough without the accolades. But his war is close. 50 War player for his career. If he can get that up to 60, then he hits the baseline. If Brian Kinney's doing the voting, then no question he's in. [LAUGHTER] With his suspiciously dark hair. Here's Shay Norlin. All right, I want to ask about the Bears. A couple players have been linked to the Bears via free agency by offshore odds makers. I've heard talk about David Bakhtiari on this show during my time off. But the Bears also have the second best odds to land former defensive player of the year, cornerback Stefan Gilmore. Gilmore had a good time in Dallas after he won the DPOY award with New England. He's been a high level player in every secondary that he's been in. But the Bears' secondarily is the strength of their defense. It's as good as any unit in the league from what we've heard. Let the league in interceptions a year ago. It's still young. What PFF Johnson? Right. What did they rank it? What did they rank the Bears' secondary hood? 21st? Yes. 21st? The PFF might be a little drunk on that one. We got Jalen Johnson. I like the secondary. We think it's a strength. Shot or no shot signing Gilmore would make no sense for the Bears. That's a no shot. Because if you could get good players with the amount of injuries that teams have to have another good player, if you have the money to be able to do it, do it. I ride with Ryan Polls, man. That guy has earned my trust and faith in him. I am all in on team Polls. I think that's a shot that they could sign him. But that would have no problem signing him because of the money situation. What would the contract be? Something like two or three years, 20 million? I think that fits under their cap, doesn't it? How much more cap room do the Bears have? I think they have in real cash, they call it. I believe the Bears have 12 and a half million left. Okay. For a flyer, I don't think that's bad for a depth. I got no problem with that. The projected market value is about $9 or $10 million a year. Okay. Chicago Bears space right now. Let's see. Over the cap. What do they got for us? I liked it for depth, Shay. That's the only reason why. He's not going to break the secondary. It's already solid. Why not add a little more? Oh, okay. Now they have team cap space on over the cap, $21.5 million. But you don't not have deals done yet with Kayla Baroma-Dunze. Which is, I don't believe that those guys are slotted in yet. So you still have to get certain guys. I guess the question is what would be left over if you want to add. Again, Shay, as we well know, the other side of that defensive line is my concern. I want them to Bears have as many pass rushes as possible from the line to get to the quarterback. We saw a lot of that last year toward the back end of the season. You know, when we continue hearing Gakwe and Gakwe, it adds a Bellinger feel to it because it's a name that we know we're familiar with. It's kind of like, it has that Bellinger feel like, "Oh, you got to have him. We got it." Okay. Well, I like him to be able to certify the pass rush. I'm not saying he's going to be all world, but I'd like to have a little bit more expertise in that spot. And so go ahead. Well, I'm with you. That's where I would spend the money. But the problem is the guys you're going to get are guys like Gyanik and Gakwe who are not great players, but you need them because you have a vacancy on the roster. Whereas Stefan Gilmore, you're going to get a good, too great player if he's at his best. He's old. Yeah. But it'll cost a little more, but you're getting a better player. I would say that that's an experience of great at that position. And I know who it would be for it, it'd be Uber Flus. I'm sure. If it was a defensive player, you would call him Dragon's Lager. What do you think of that? Look, if they can add talent, this team has a chance to be really, really good in a really, really tough division. If David Bakhtiari is coming in here and he gives you 10 games, that's a really good depth piece. If he's healthy, he says it's the healthiest he's been in multiple years. If that's true, Connor Williams is coming off the ACL at center. He's a really good player. He would have got paid big if he had been healthy. He turned out a Shay Norling on his thoughts on players being in the best shape of their life. Shay. That's my least favorite cliche in sports. Yeah, but he had everybody's in the best shape of their life every year because I'm with you on this. Like why were you completely fat, not a shape that if you're now in the best shape of your life is my question because those ribs are good, but he's coming off of major knee issues that he says he got cleaned up. If that's true and he's feeling a lot better, maybe he's got one last hurrah in him on a team that's going in the right direction. It looks like. Yeah. No more Packers. Yeah. I heard I heard all that about Miguel Cabrera's knee getting cleaned up and being in the best shape of his life for the last seven years when he was a dead body, too. Wow, just saying, who's Shay Norling? Get to that age. You got knee issues? I'm good. I'm out. All right. Cubs last night, we talked in the first hour caps. Youth sports basketball team winning 40 to four. The scoreboard operators stopped keeping score. You missed it. It's on the SP in Chicago app, but the Cubs last night did something interesting as well. Up eight, two miles, master bony steals a base shot or no shot. This is a bad look. No shot. It's eight, two in Baltimore. You got an awful bullpen to this moment and by the way, it's eight to two. It's not 14 to two and no issues with that. Green light. Yes. Whoa, went on his own. I don't know about this Craig have certain guys have the green light, but to pick up another run against this bullpen, I got no problems with that. Now I will tell you, I was on the air waiting to do the post game. It's late at night. Cubs are playing at Dodger Stadium, the late Ron Santo and Tom Brighteman on the call. Cubs are up nine nothing in the ninth. So sir gets a hit. He's on first. He steals second. Yeah. Nine nothing. The next pitch hits Mark Grace right in the ribs. Ninety five miles an hour right in the ribs. And Ron Santo bless his heart, rest in peace on the air. Good for the Dodgers. That'll knock off that bolt and said the whole word. What? What did he say? And you hear Tommy just chuckle. Yes. Yes. And rightfully so. Nine nothing in the ninth. A little different for me than eight to a little different there plus the Cubs bullpen was horrific. I had no problem with it because even the Orioles know about that Cubs bullpen. You need to be able to just get into the position because you never know. It's never enough runs with that bullpen for the Cubs and master bony by the way. That's not a green light from Craig. That's master bony saying, Look what I'm doing. I'm having a day. Why don't you play me more? I'm better than morale. Take that. He's not. That's what he's saying by doing he had a day yesterday by the way, but the last week. Fair is fair. I've been hard on that dude. Yeah. Fair is fair. Defensively, he's been magnificent at third, gave you a two for three with a run to two walks and a stolen base yesterday. Yeah. He's what he's saying to Craig. You should play me more. I'm better at third than morale. That's what he's saying. Yeah. But what's he hitting going into the game? Like one forty nine dollar seventy two like yeah, as as the game ended, I, I know what you're saying. I agree with what you're saying. But if you're a miles master boney, you get a show like, I don't need to be sitting here. Correct. I know I'm better, a glove man than that guy because morale is not a third baseman as I told you in spring training, like that's not a third baseman. They're just trying to find a place for him. I'll tell you something else. Morrell also is not a DH, but where are you going to play him? He came up as a shortstop. Obviously he's not going to play there because you've got Dan's behavior over there. Three strikeouts. Yeah. And he drove in a run with a fielder's choice and you got Nicole Horner at second where that would be the next position for Christopher Morrell. Yes. But you got Niko was a good player. I look, if they're going to blow it up, he might be a guy they trade and then you could move morale in there. But then you've got James Triantos and Matt Shaw. You got two of your best prospects. Play that position. You got to pick. You got to piss Jack off again. Please. Why? I'll talk about Niko Horner. We're going to be off next July. Hoodie and I are going for Niko Horner's Hall of Fame induction in Cooperstown. And then we're going to the statue unveiling of the Chris Sale Hall of Fame bus. Jack, did you do peyote before coming to work yesterday? I don't know. All I said is Shinselo on Niko Horner. This is this is why I know you went way way beyond that. This is your fault. Bad program for the for AI Jack. It's it. Here's it. Here's overheating. I'll reel. I'll look at the code. This is all on you. You're supposed to program him well. And now he's going. You put in the shake code and then he went over the top. Yep. He first take Jack in there. This is all Chase fault. Can you squeeze in one more before around the NFL? Yeah. I mean, speaking of Jack McGrath, I got in here this morning. And he told me he has been invited to a five year high school reunion. What? Five years. These people have been out of college for a year. Many probably are super seniors and they're running a five year reunion. I famously did not attend my 10 year reunion because I don't care about most of these people. And frankly, with social media, I can keep up with the people I want to keep up with without having to go and see them on a given date for a 10 year or 20 year, whatever reunion, shot or no shot shot or no shot. Yes, shot or no shot high school reunions have been rendered obsolete by social media. It's a shot. I've never been to a high school reunion, neither have I got 78, neither have I never gone. I was going to go to one and my son, Alex had appendicitis, had to have surgery and I went I'm going to be with him at the hospital. Yeah. Right. So, yes, you know, it's funny. The people that I think she has a right, the people that you knew in high school, your friends with on Facebook. And so you already know what's happening in their day to day lives. What's the conversation? If you already know, if you already speak through social media or maybe have their phone numbers, right? What do you want to see? You see them. This high school reunion was was great before social media. Correct. I haven't talked to you in 10 years. I haven't seen you in 20 years. Where'd you move to? Oh, my God. Five years. Let it go. Correct. So are you wearing the Letterman's jacket, Jack, when you go in there? No, I don't think so. I can't think of anything to talk about. Are you going? No, I don't know. I liked my high school, but five years is just so soon. I don't know if it's not the answer. No. It's probably going to be a no. Five years is pretty sudden. You just saw them. You were just sharing lockers with them. Yeah. Five. Ten. Where are you living now? Well, same place. My parents basement. Same place as high school. Five years isn't even long enough to be sentimental about high school. There's a reason you got to wait ten. You got to have nostalgia. Five years. It's all too recent. Yeah, I've had... Well, I just saw you. We're just sitting in the bleachers watching the Varsity basketball game together, the 730 tip. Yeah. I had my 40 year. I haven't gone. Hey, man. That's not a huge reunion guy. I'm not a wedding guy. So what do you want me to do? No, no. I just think from me, I would just... I don't want people from over there in Avenue O asking me for a hundred bucks, knowing since they know what I do for a living now. Right. That's what I don't want. Correct. Oh, look at him. He's hosting a morning show. Could you help a brother out of here? Exactly. That's the problem. I don't want the guys from Avenue O asking me, "Hey, doing radio, huh? Here we go every morning, making good money." Yeah. How long have you been doing this? 32 years. Yeah. Probably accumulated a lot over the years, huh? Yeah. I got my community money. What's your point? Yeah. I don't want to go into that. Do you want to sponsor my youth group? Exactly. Youth group. Put your hand out. Jeez. Yeah. Around the NFL is coming up. Don't forget to waddle Wednesday. We'll hear from Tommy coming up at 835. I'm Jay Hood on Chicago's Home for Sports. I want to thank both of you guys, man, for the great season, for bed information. And I just want to say I appreciate you guys. And I love this show. On Chicago's Home for Sports. ESPN Chicago. Hit both sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football evaluator. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is drunk. But there he goes. This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winning. He starts to come. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's the answer you're looking for on these things here? It's time to go around the NFL right here on the Cap and Jane Good Morning Show on ESPN 1000. It's a lot of Wednesday. We'll hear from Tommy coming up at 835. We go around the NFL. Here's the returning Ushay and Orling. Shay? I was catching up on headlines, Hoodie, and I saw Aaron Rodgers. I was apparently per Devontae Adams, quote, in the ear trying to recruit Devontae Adams from the Raiders to the Jets. And it just, can somebody help me understand who is running these teams? Is it the GMs and the executives and the presidents and whoever or is it the players? Because as I understand, Devontae Adams is under contract with the Raiders. Yes. How is Aaron Rodgers recruiting him to the Jets? There is no tampering clause in the NFL, right? There is for executives, coaches, owners, anybody, not players. See? Well, the answer to your question, Shay, is it depends on the team, right? Apparently, but like my point is, Rodgers going to get on the horn with the people in Vegas and offer to move jet picks? Who's running these teams? Yellow. Yeah. This is Aaron, I need to speak to Mark Davis. Aaron who? Aaron Rodgers. Mark Aaron Rodgers will give you our 2026 and 2027 first round picks. We want Devontae. Done. Joe. Joe Douglas, the GM? Yeah. Can you get someone to pick Devontae up at the airport? I got to work out in a therapy on my Achilles. No. Devontae who? Devontae Adams. I just traded for him. Okay. Whatever you say. Rodgers is telling Joe Douglas to set a meeting with the capologist. That does not work. How are we going to pay for this, Aaron? I don't know. Figure it out, but I just traded for him. I'm Mark Davis. I'm like, put your dad on the phone. Put your GM on the phone. Who are you? You're making it in the go? Put the GM on the phone. What is going on here? Is this a goof? Put your GM on the phone. Crazy. I like the conversation that the bears have. That's better. Hello? Hello? Who's this? Who's this? This is Chicago Bears, man. How you doing? Shae, next time someone calls you and you pick up the phone, you should say this is ESPN 1000. Who's this? Someone from the office, like, you're not Shae Norling. You're ESPN 1000. I should start answering the phone like that. Like Caleb. Hello? Like you're used to. Who's called me? Who's this? You're called the studio like a bears, man. Hello? Who's this? Who's this? ESPN 1000, man. That's what you... That's how you answer it. So, Shae, again, this is why I talked about this in the past. Shae, there's so many NFL players that wish they had the autonomy and the swing that NBA players have. Like LeBron James has so much power that in the open, when you're... That's where the tamper... Yep. I want that guy. I want this guy. I want that guy. The NFL players wish that that kind of power to say, "Yeah, you know what, out in the open, I want that guy on my team. What are you gonna do about it?" Openly tampering. NBA guys do it all the time. The NFL does not have that same autonomy. So, Shae, what else do we have? This morning, I was on sportsman like Evan Cohen offered his top five pass catchers list. I was listening live and was left in slack jawed amazement, frankly. Here's Evan Cohen's top five pass catchers in the airfoil. Me too. At five, CD lamb, at four, Justin Jefferson, at three, Christian McCaffrey, at two, Jamar Chase, and at one, Travis Kelsey. Yeah. Yeah. That was not Evan's best segment. Sorry, Evan. Love you, but that was not a good segment. Listen, content's content. Evan is free to believe what he wants to believe, and I'm not even saying his list is wrong. I'm not gonna trash it. I will tell you I created my own list, and the two of you can decide whose list is better. Yeah, and I will trash Evan's, and I love Evan. Evan's list was horrible. Shae, your list is better. My top five pass catchers. You don't have to give it. It's already better. Next? Hey, when I'd be giving it, yep, Shae, your list is better. Thank you. Why is Christian McCaffrey on Evan's list? Why is Travis Kelsey? He's not a wide receiver. He also is coming off a career worst year. He said pass catcher. Did he say pass catcher? He said pass catcher. He said what a pass catcher? He said he wasn't limiting this to wide receiver. Pass catcher. Okay. Now, again, McCaffrey doesn't belong on the list, but the point is though, he said pass catcher and his whole point, as we all heard it live here, unfortunately like five to seven before we come on here on ESPN 1000, he believes that the tight end has more value than the wide receiver. Do you agree with that? No. You know why he says that? And it was not mentioned on the show, but if I was a Colston show, if I was Chris Canty, and I would have said, you know, what I would have said would be, you're a Patriots fan. Of course, you'd feel that way. Correct. He had Gronk, and he had no real great receivers. And you won a lot with that formula. That's correct. Wide receivers were just an accountant and a sanitation man, and it was good enough for Brady. And it was a converted quarterback from Kent State. And let's be honest, it wasn't good enough for Brady, but that's the way Belichick ran it. And so Brady had to flourish despite having a difference maker or difference makers at wide receiver. Gronk was it, right? So Shane, let's hear your five that's better than Evan. At five, I have Amunra, St. Brown, the Detroit line. He was fantastic last season at four. This was probably the most controversial selection, but Brandon Ayuk, who I publicly loved in San Francisco. I think he's better than Debo Samuel. He was incredible. He's still young, 25 years old to probably get better as he gets into his prime. Three CD lamb and tied for first, Tyree Killen, Justin Jefferson. Okay. The world list is literally Secretary at the Belmont, and Evan's list is Sham, who ended up in the match race with Secretary, it fell all the way back to last. Here's Sham on Demar DeRosa. It was really down to the Kings and the Miami Nation, and what I'm told as far as Demar DeRosa is next home. He really wanted to land in a competitive environment. And also, I'm told wanted to go back west by the end of the day. And the Kings, they put stuff. I didn't say Sham. I said Sham. That was the name of the horse that was dead like. Sorry. How's mistaken? Yeah. Not Sham's sharoni. I thought you were calling for Sham's sound there. I didn't know. No. Thank you, though. So Shane, before you even read it, yes, it's again, past catchers, you disagree with his premise that tight ends are more valuable than one of our receivers? Correct. No, I'm not telling you that you couldn't put Travis Kelsey at five. I would have. Who did you have? Co number one. Tyree killing Justin Jefferson. Thank you. That's exactly where I would have any list that Evan puts out of past catchers that doesn't have Tyree kill on it. The top five is a bad list. Sorry, Evan. Take that. Yeah. That's fine to say. No problem. The McCaffery thing is mystifying to me, like absolutely mystifying. This guy, he was targeted like 83 times 67 catches. You are not a top pass catcher. No. It was 83 targets less than 30. It was like 29% of his snaps came lined up at receiver. No, it's just you can't be a top five pass catcher. No. That's just wrong. That's okay. Look, it was compelling enough for us to talk about in a topic on unsportsman like he's just wrong about that. But I think the question still stands, Jack. Would you rather have a top wide receiver or a tight end that again is a top pass catcher? So Justin Jefferson for life or Travis Kelsey for life? I'll take Jefferson. It's tough because it's like one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game against the best wide receiver right now. Well, if we're talking to your past catching, I'll take Jefferson. But if we're adding in the blocking and all the other aspects, I'll take Kelsey. Am I getting Kelsey at his age right now? And Justin Jefferson? Because that's very easy, Justin Jefferson. Kelsey was operating at 60% last season so that he could be good for the playoffs. Right. Or are we talking Travis Kelsey and Justin Jefferson both at age 24? Yeah, all the time. That might take Kelsey. Kelsey. Yeah. But the Evan kept saying like if you have a great tight end, you're more likely to win a Super Bowl, which, okay, fine. But if you look at the non-quarterback Super Bowl MVPs who were like offensive players, they're all wide receivers. Yes. Because Julian Edelman won it, Cooper Cup won it. It's a different category than we are used to, Kat, because they weren't called pass catchers. Tight end was the grunt work. Correct. That was the blocker. Get some some catches here and there, but for the most part, you're the grunt guy, the tight end. That is correct. You can see how athletic the tight end is, which is amazing. Is Tommy there? By the way, Jack, Tommy? Tommy belonged on that list when he played. He was a shut up. So you so that was. Oh, you know what? Don't be a jerk. I was being complimentary. There you go. Normally you were being a wise ass. You were being a wise ass because I didn't you everyone on the planet knows I don't deserve to be on that list. So you did. I didn't say today you're 59 years old in a Scotch induced coma half the time. See again, another shot. That's another shot. I'm talking about when you were in your prime. Listen, I think this is a silly conversation. You know, I love that. And I think Evan's wonderful at what he does. He's a great guy. Evan, as John, John, you just said it. He accomplished his goal. He got you guys talking about it. Like there's no basis on any rationale to put as good a player as Christian McCaffrey is as a top five pass catch in league and tight ends are definitely not as important as what as years as wide receivers. Look, and that's not to diminish. I think a guy like Gronk was one of the most difficult covers in the history of the NFL because he was faster than linebackers and safeties. He's bigger than corner. So if you drop a corner inside, like, you know, who's our guy that plays on the inside. It's so early for me. I can't remember. Marcy Lewis, no, no, no, no, no, who's our corner back, the kick inside? We got Tyreeks Davidson on the outside. Jalen Johnson. No, no, no, no. Kyler Gordon. Kyler Gore. Yes. There you go. So for Kyler Gordon, who's a fantastic player, and I think it's as a position that's undervalued quite a bit. He's too big for Kyler Gordon. He's too fast for linebackers and safeties. But those guys are one in a million most of the time and as much as I love Travis Kelsey, my guess is, Travis Kelsey, a ton of his success isn't just he's a great player. But what he's got with the greatest quarterback we've seen in decades is something that you just can't even put your finger on sometimes. Because Travis Kelsey's not ever going to be as dominant a player if he doesn't have someone who he's in tune with as much as he is with Patrick Mahomes. So I'm with you. I think Cap, you said at any list that doesn't have Tyreeks Davidson in it at this time. Oh, Tyreeks. I'm sorry. Yeah. By the way, it's a 24-year-old Tom Waddle in 1991, 55 catches for $5.99 and three tuddies that belonged on that list. Jonathan, do you realize that I'm getting out over my skis right now? But I think I have a higher career yards per catch average than Keenan Allen. I've heard this. Yes. I've heard this. Take that, Shay. Thanks, dad. Stick that in your analytics. I'm coming up with Waddle Wednesday on The Cap and Jay Good Morning Show. Tom Waddle. Tom Waddle. Former wide receiver for the Chicago Bears. Nice. You guys amazing. 1989 All Madden team and afternoon co-host on ESPN Chicago. I think he's going to start at least eight games in the national football league next year for a team that's going to give him a chance. It's Waddle Wednesday with Tom Waddle. Listen, I've got a pedicure in an hour, but I get back here. The wheels better be spinning, all right, on Cap and Jay Good. ESPN Chicago. It is a Waddle Wednesday here on The Cap and Jay Good Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. We've got Tommy with us and Tommy is on the hotline. That'd be the car X-Tire and auto hot. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom, yeah, we're coming here. Don't worry about the car X-Nam. Good morning, Tommy. How are you? Good, how are you? Good to talk to you as well. Tommy, we want to ask you about the story regarding Mike Gundy, the head coach for Oklahoma State, the man who said, and you coined it as well. Come after me. I'm a man. I'm 40. Remember when you used to do that? I did. I'd still do it. He'd been 17 years later. That's the best. Let's go to say, running back Ollie Gordon the second was arrested for driving with blood alcohol concentration of 0.11 percent and Gundy on big 12 media days, big 12 media days, by the way, in Vegas. How cool is that? Makes sense, right? He hits Vegas hair too, Jonathan. Did you see the picture of him horrible? Yes, very suspiciously, dark hair from Mike Gundy. Talked about this when it comes to Gordon. Listen. Coats football is changing, we all know, and we can say these guys aren't employees, but they're really employees. These guys get paid a lot of money, which is fine, but there needs to be a side to what they do that they have to be able to, for lack of a better term, face of music and own up to things. When I looked at it, I thought, okay, I'm going to be real honest with myself first, and then make the best decision for what I think is good for Ollie, our university and our team. Then I started thinking about being a parent. I have a 28, I have a 23 and a 19, and first I thought, okay, so I looked it up on my phone. What would be the legal limit, like in Oklahoma, it was 0.08, and Ollie was 0.1, so I looked it up, and it was based on body weight, not to get into the legal side of it, but I thought really two or three beers or four. I'm not just fine with all he did, I'm telling you what decision I made. Well I thought I probably done that a thousand times in my life, and it was just fine. So I got lucky, people get lucky, Ollie made a decision that he wished he could have done better. I just heard an open microphone, my Gundy saying that he's driven drunk a thousand times. Yeah, that's not good. Here's Tom Waddle-Tom. Yeah, I mean, listen, I think the message you have to have, look, you get whatever message you want. But then you're going to face consequences of how people will view you and how they will evaluate you. I think the message from my perspective is, yes, I will admit I've done the same thing at times, I'm not proud of it. The answer here is don't ever drink and get behind the wheel. All you're doing is you're inviting trouble, and I think that's the message. I don't think the message is, we should tolerate it because we've done it, gotten away with it, and we got lucky. You don't want to get lucky. You know what I'm saying? Because it could be a tragic ending. Yeah, I just think it's a bad message. Listen, my Gundy kind of marches to the beat of his own drummer anyway, and he'll have to deal with the repercussions of what he said. But I think the message to young adult, listen, I've got 31, 20, 28, 26, and 20, and my message to them is, if you have a drink, call an Uber. And these kids, and again, I'm not getting on a high horse because I've made the mistake myself have done it too often in the past as well, and by that I mean had a beer or two and got in the car, and so I'm not taking my own advice. But these kids are getting millions of dollars in NIL money, right? I mean, this kid is fantastic player. He's got the resources, call it a limousine, call it a call an Uber. You know, these days too, with the amount of money that's flowing into these these programs, you should have, if I was Oklahoma State, I'd have a car service on speed dial for all of my players. I had a player, current NFL player tell me that he has a card from the NFL PA. Yes, I think they do have that. They said, you call the number on there, and yeah, this is John from the car service. They come get you. Hey, I'm at Mothers on Division, and I've had way too much to drink. They will pick you up, no charge. They will drive you home, and they don't tell the team. Right. It's confidential. Yes. And it's a good point, Cap. I had forgotten that actually the NFL does have that. I think college football should have the same, so I guess Jonathan, the thing I'm saying is look, I don't want to be perceived as speaking out of whatever two sides of my mouth. I've made the mistake as well and shouldn't have done it. But you don't know, you're much different. No. Yeah. I mean, right. But my message would be, don't do what I did, don't make the mistakes I did. As a parent, as someone who's got some age on him, the answer isn't, hey, you know what? You got lucky, you know, call somebody, call an Uber, call, you know, a car service, call something. I would guess, from my standpoint, if you're my Gundy, if it's not out there that people know that you've driven drunk a thousand times, I don't know if I'd bring it up as an antidote. Yeah. I don't think I would do that. What I would say is, is that, hey, look, we all make mistakes. This young man has to learn from those mistakes. I don't justify it by saying, well, I looked on my phone, I checked out the percentage based on body weight. Let me tell you, I've gotten away with a thousand times. I've driven drunk. I could have killed somebody. I had no big deal. Here's why there will be no ramifications. And by the way, since we've talked about this, there's a statement, Captain, he's, it doesn't necessarily rectify to be kind of explain his thoughts, Gundy, on what he said. He's entitled to what he wants, Tom, because if he was Fireball Oklahoma State, and I'm not calling for that, but if he was Fireball Oklahoma State, he'd be picked up in a second. And so from Oklahoma State's standpoint, it's my Gundy. He's been wearing on the program. What he said was reckless, but there will be no ramifications to my Gundy. Absolutely not. No. Look, Mike, that would be my guess. Mike Gundy was a player there, Jonathan. Like I was going to say before this, the conversation, yeah, before the conversation got really serious and important, when I was in school, I bet you, Jonathan, because I know you're good at these memory issues, I bet you can guess his top receiver in college, and we were in college at the same time. So when you would check stats on Sunday mornings in the newspaper, because you didn't have access to anything else's college player, when his top receiver was a guy I'd always follow to see where I was in line with the top receivers in the country. He was drafted 20th overall, I believe, by the New England Patriots back in 1989. 89. No, that doesn't ring a bell. Hartley Dykes. Oh, Hartley Dykes originally sounded Illinois. Yeah. Hartley Dykes went to Illinois as the number one recruit in the country. Yeah, yeah. And then transferred. Yeah. And I believe he was Gundy's top receiver going back to the days of when Gundy was quarterback back at Oklahoma State. I'm not trying to, you know, veer the conversation away from him, but the point is, yes, I think he's been there, Jonathan, he's been he played there from 89, he's my age. He's been there his entire life. I don't think, I don't think that they're going to punish him in any way, but I would hope that he would come back out and say, look, I said what I said, but the message going forward is, is we have access to, to make sure these, these student athletes are safe. And if you find yourself in a compromised situation, here's a number to call someone will come and get you and there will be confidentiality attached to it. By the way, Hartley Dykes, he was selected in the first round 16th overall career cut short after two seasons when he fractured his kneecap and an eye injury that occurred during a barroom fight involving teammate Irving Fryer in 1990. In 1989, he was also drafted by the Chicago White Sox. Yeah. He's a great player. How about that? And Tommy put his arms up when he heard that story is like, yep, better than you, pal. No, I don't. Better than you. Yeah. My numbers are way better than yours. I win. Tommy, everywhere a walking boot, just because, no, because that's what Dak Prescott's doing. He says, this is precautionary because I'm fine. I'm just, well, I like to put on this boot every now and then. I would think Jonathan that that would cause you issues because it then compromises you in other areas, then you would become, you know, dependent on the boot and the support that it gives you. That sounds really weird. Is this some sort of like contract negotiation ploy? I don't know. I don't know why he's got the boat or why the boot would be. I don't have any idea. I don't know what he's doing. All right. Tommy, hang on because we want to ask you about a couple of free agents. The bears are laying off the jack. Well, you quit busting Jack's balls. He's a good young kid, Jack, who Jack, the guy in your booth over there. Oh, this is a graph. Pottinger. AI Jack. AI Jack. Yes. That's what we have. It's Jack McGrath. Yeah. Not Jack. Pottinger. That's Justin Potting. I'm aware that's smoke. You just nailed your know your fellow employees here. I know all of them. Yes. It's got to be on your 12th cue. That's playing Kahoot. You have the best friend at work. Would you tell her to break, please? No, we'll be right back. Captain Jay Hood. Our back. Glad to hear both of you guys back. Happy New Year to both of you. Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. The 8 a.m. hour of the Captain Jay Hood morning show is brought to you by. That would be the village of Bullingbrook. Welcome to the 2024 Live Golf Individual Championships at the awesome Bullingbrook Golf Club. Tommy, there are a bunch of dudes still out there unsigned with training camp for rookies beginning next week shortly thereafter. The veterans will be in. The Bears are not being linked to Stefan Gilmore. The Bears have been linked to David Bakhtiari, Connor Williams. Would you bring anybody else in? I would bring Connor Williams in as long as you were confident in his medicals. I really would. That's a name. I'm just uncomfortable guys. And maybe I'm just being an alarmist here, but I've said it a bunch with you guys. I think especially when your quarterback is young, I think it affected Justin, you know, taking, you know, snaps in the shotgun position off your shins. Bring your eyes down. Please don't think I want this quarterback to have no issues with the guys snapping him the ball. And I think I said this yesterday too. Look, I'm not bothered by Caleb size. I mean, he's six one, but he's not six five. So I personally believe that all quarterbacks, especially young quarterbacks, are bothered by pressure that comes from right in front of them or so that comes from the edge. So that pocket's got to be secure. And like Kevin Jenkins is a fabulous player when he's available, you know, Nate Davis has some really good moments when he's he's not been the most reliable guy either. Like I don't want from guard to guard to be an issue for a rookie quarterback. So that's the reason why if in fact, Connor Williams was available or was would pass your medical exams that I would be interested in him and he could play. Let's just say, you know, that Bates is their guy and he solidifies himself at center. Williams played guard too. So I mean, he just makes your guard to guard, you know, depth much better. Stefan Gilmore is a Hall of Fame corner, but where's he going to play? You know, he's not going to play at this point in front of Tyreeks Stevenson or Jalen Johnson or Kyle Gordon. So I don't know that I would pay the freight there. And I think Ryan Polls has done a brilliant job maintaining a cash level that allows him to make one of these signings. I think he's also done a fabulous job with with how he's handled his draft. So going into next year, he's got a full compliment of picks and he's in a good cap position. So Connor Williams would be the guy I would probably look at. There was, you know, talk about in Gakway. I wouldn't bring him in at the same price if he wants to come in at half the price they paid him last year. And not Bakhtiari. Bakhtiari is also a borderline Hall of Fame guy, but he's never he hasn't been healthy. So I mean, if you want to bring him in and he becomes your swing tackle, fine. But I don't know that I could put him out there again, Cap, with a rookie quarterback and trust that physically he's going to be able to do what he needs to do. He's been a great player, but he's missed so many games and he's probably not going to come cheap. So I want them to want them to apply some of these assets towards a pass rusher, whoever that may be, I mean, and also guys, remember, like Ryan Poe is not afraid to make a trade. So you may get to the end of training camp and someone may be wanting to move a pass rusher or something. And he's got not just the draft currency to do it, but he's got space under the salary cap as well. So I just love what Ryan has done being judicious with all of his resources, which gives him the opportunity to make some of these these moves. But a pass rusher for sure has to be added and I, as long as Connor Williams passes your medical test, I'd bring him in. I would imagine that Caleb Williams in a doomsday will be taken care of on hard knocks as far as their contract signings, because I think they went for the cameras to come in because they would have been done by now. Yeah. So I can see it. You know what, Jonathan, it's really weird because they're a great point of everyone talked about that is a great point and it would be great for the team and be great for everybody involved. There are a lot of people out there that are really concerned that they're not they're not saying. And, you know, this talk that Caleb Williams, you know, is his father or himself who wanted to kind of break the system and be a pioneer on that, I don't, you can't do that, right? No. The slotting system for salaries for rookies was collectively bargained. Sure. You just can't throw that out. So like the thought, the only thing that you could really, you know, butt heads about is some of the offset language and we saw some of that with Rokwan Smith. But I don't think that that's anything that Caleb Williams, not speaking for me, but every impression I get is that he wants to be here, he wants to be a leader right away, he wants to lead by example. He can take care of his business, don't get me wrong, but he's here to play ball. And that means, you know, not trying to upset something that has been collectively bargained. So I don't see that as a huge issue. Yeah, I don't either. You can hear the sprinklers going off in Lake Forest, but yet the rookie quarterback is not signed. Da da da da. Will he sign? Da da da da. He's a giant nap head on a table and they focus in on it. Yes. I know we are out of time. Next week, don't let me forget. I want you to talk about Roma Dunesay and understanding the NFL route tree and how quickly he can assimilate himself into the offense with the speed and physicality, obviously ramping up. Anytime you want me, call me. You're the man. All right. Thank you, Tommy, as always. Love you guys. Like brothers. Love you. Kind of. Brother. Brattle, round, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom. Brother. Don't worry about the car X name. That's Tommy Waddle on the car X tire and auto hotline. Hey, the Cubs are back. Thanks to the owl. explain that in two minutes on Cap and Jay Hood.
