[Music] Good morning and welcome into the Captain Jacob Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. Now time for Shadow No Shot, which is brought to you by... That would be ESPN Bet Now Live in Illinois. Sign up today in New Year's, get $100 in bonus bets with any sports book. Bet. Bet. Bet. We also have an update on the bag situation. I just received a message from Canada, so we'll get to that as well. Here is J.W. Norling. Good morning, boys, on a Thursday. How are we feeling? Good, man. Good. I lasted 20 years with the beautiful Mindy. Ready to go. You have 21 in with Peacock, right? Yes. 24 in November. Yes, you are. I lost count. I lost count. I'm going backwards, actually, in the numbers. Shae, yesterday, most underwhelming draft that I can remember. But it's not like... We're all excited we used to be. Yeah, but it's not like we were surprised. This is what it is. We knew, but you and I be in basketball, guys. Like, that was my super ball. That's what I used to... My whole career was on that. Last night, I'm like, "Who's that guy?" Just things have changed, man. To me, it's all about program. You're the team that they're going to be on. How can you develop? But we had so much... I was dealing with fighting off the Justin Fields cult for months. It was in the middle of college basketball. So I didn't get as much attention to the college crop as I would because I had cult members coming at me all the time. But it doesn't matter. Even if you did, all the best players play in Europe or what was the G League Ignite now. They don't play in college anymore. And last night, it was especially awful. Like, it really clicked for me when I'm sitting there watching and every player selected, even in the lottery, they're like, "Yeah, I'm not going to start. Probably won't play a lot in his first year." I'm like, "What world am I living in?" Yeah. It's totally different, man. Yeah, it certainly is. All right, Shay, what do we have? Speaking of the draft, I was reading in the Tribune last night after the Bozzellis selection that the Bulls are still going through the process of re-signing negotiations with both Patrick Williams and Demarter Rosen. This confused me a little bit because if you ask me, Demarter Rosen should simply not be back on the team. I would think that the Bulls, rather than re-signing negotiations, should be looking into sign and trade negotiations, bring another team into the fold and figure out a way to-- He's not coming back here. Do right by Demara. The more and more I hear about it, the more and more worried I get. We know the Bulls don't do things that make sense. Our tourists said last night, "I know you guys heard them." You'll see what we're doing in the next two weeks, things that look very different. I think there's a shot of no-shot question. Yeah, Shay's trying to get to-- Thank you, Woody. What are no-shot the Bulls will bring Demarter Rosen back? No-shot. That would be insane. Shay, go ahead. Next one. That's it? I mean, just before you could even get it out. I mean, well, here's what I would say. It's pretty cool that Demara likes Chicago so much that he says I want to be here because the city has embraced the Rosen. They have. However, for basketball reasons, because he's the oldest player on the team, he'd be a key cog to a winning team. All right, Demara, your experience, your mid-range jumper, we could use it. Your defensive prowess, we could use it. You're just the missing ingredient that we need to push the team over the top. Like an OKC or a Minnesota. Sure. Perfect example, right? Yeah. Limited minutes. You don't need to play 35 minutes like you do for Billy. You have no other choice because it's like the Bulls. Philly? Yeah, something like that, right? I know he wants to be here, but he should not be with the Bulls anymore. No. He's not throwing him off the team. It's like, what is his value to a team that's a play in team? Justin Verlander on the White Sox. Yeah. Okay. He's 39. What is he going to do for you? That's all fair. Right. So, good guy, really liked Demara Rosen, but should be with a championship caliber team. The Bulls are not. So, he should be dealt. Sign and trade, maybe? That's what I think is going to happen. So, I keep hearing. Sign and trade. God, I hope. I think so, Shane. I think so. That Casey Johnson thing put the fear of God in me, that both these guys, DeRozan and Levine, are going to be on this team in October. And you can't do that. He can. Nobody's saying they should. They can. They can do anything they want, Cap. Well, here's the thing. It's Carter Shelves being completely dishonest with the Bulls fan. If one of those guys is still here, or both of these guys are still here. One is still here. It's fine. I think he's being dishonest if he resigns Demara, but he gets rid of Zach. If he gets rid of Demara, and we couldn't find a real taker for Zach. So, we're going to hang on to him for now. All right. It is what it is. Yeah. If you're going to make this declarative statement, that is time for change for the Bulls. Then you've got to move Demara. And Levine, too. But here's, as I was telling you the other day, doors are closing on Levine. I would also move Vooch. And I like Vooch. Doors are closing. You're passing up what I'm saying. But that's fine. Their doors are closing around the league on Zach Levine and the services. Correct. But if you rehabilitate his image on a team where he doesn't have Demara as a ball stopper, he puts pretty good numbers up. You might be able to move a good chunk of that money. Don't you agree? Yeah. Who knows? And if I'm a winning team, Boston, Milwaukee, like teams that think they can contend, I would take Nicole the Vooch of it. Understand? 100%. It's a good player. Not a fit here anymore. It's time to move on. Problem is these guys make too much money. Like we've talked about who's doesn't. The others do. Demara's what? A 40 million a year guy they're saying? Yeah. Not what I said. Two for 80. Boy. I guess in today's NBA, sure. Yes. Vooch is 20 million. That's nothing in the NBA. I guess. Yeah. The Vooch thing you can probably make a move, but the Celtics don't have a place to fit him if you're trying to move him to a team that would take him. Like Levine we've talked about on a good team maybe comes off the bench. Miami. Who would use a guy like Vooch? Who's paying a max contract for a guy might be their first guy off the bench? Yeah. No quite unless they can dump a bunch of crappy salaries on you. Shay. Last night, eight thinning two outs. Craig Council called for a double steal with Ian Happ and Christopher Morrell. Now, Happ made a mistake. Left early gets picked off, tagged out for the final out of the inning. But just calling it in general is a massive gamble. Eight thinning two outs. I learned it a little league. Don't make the final out at third base. You're already in scoring position. This feels like a result of an offense that's been inept with runners on. You're trying to get an extra runner in scoring position in a one run game. So God willing, you get a hit. You can take a lead. But the end up, Ian Happ gets tagged out at third base inning over. Shot or no shot. This is the dumbest decision Craig Council has made this season. Wow. I mean close of a Colton Brewer's right there with him the other night. It's a no shot because there's been, but again, you're pushing buttons that don't work. Those are not his buttons. Those are Jed's buttons. Those are his sign. Those are his decisions. And he's saying Craig, go ahead. This is what we're going to give you. Okay. I keep pressing a button, but it doesn't work. I keep hitting the power button, but it doesn't work. So that's on Jed. And then do you know why they haven't been using? Remember last week when I came in here, I was so ticked off because Naris gave up the home run to. Yeah. Right. Ramos. Okay. Which day does the Giants game? They lost a three run lead in the night. Yeah. Remember that? Yeah. And he said, I don't anticipate us changing that we're still going to close with him. He hasn't closed since. You know why? Because he has a nine million dollar club option for next year that automatically vests if he hits certain parameters, finishes X number of games. They're going to limit those on this crappy team so they don't have to have his ass back. So you're not even using the best picture because you don't want to spend the money. That's a shame that you have to do that as a decision. But this is where you are. But he had blown so many saves. And then you made three outs on the bases last night. The first one was Christopher Morrell stretching a single into a double. He's safe and his arm comes off the bag because as the guy tagged, you saw it, puts his arm in there, knocks his arm off and out on review. Good baseball. And bad review, by the way. You can't knock a guy's arm off. That was a horrible call. But he was off the back. Then he gets picked off first on another one. The worst. That is terrible. He should have been yanked from the game at that moment. And then Ian Hap jumps too early on the double steal. Yeah. Well, guess what? The double steal was a stupid decision. So that's a cha-cha. And then Ian Hap not reading it right. That's another horrible play. Yank him out. Yeah. Very simply, pressure bursts pipes. The reason why that play was on is because they have had a hard time scoring runs, as we all know. And so that's why that decision was put in place. Because they're under so much pressure, they're trying to do anything to get runners across the plate. But is Ian Hap not one of your faster guys? Yes. Okay. He's no Pete Crow, but he is fast. No, but there's nobody like Pete Crow. I can fly score from first on a single last thing. Watch it. Like 23 miles an hour or so. Unbelievable. Yeah. But Ian Hap's going to score on a base hit from second. 99% of the time. So what do you need the double steal for? As Shea said correctly, it's a massive gamble. And guess what? In and over. I know. I watched it. But that's the pressure when you lose cap. We talk about it all the time. $230 million payroll. You're losing games. You're in last place in the central. This is what happens. Pressure. My wife went up to bed and I used your line and go, "Good night, Mindy." And she's like, "I don't know why you--I know you have to do your recap, but I don't know why you're so wound up about this." And of course he gets picked off. She's asleep upstairs. And I went, "No!" And she woke her up. What? Nothing. Nothing. Here's Shea Norton. Two on two out. In the eighth inning, man, it's just what are you doing double stealing? Right! Also, but along with that, as much as I'm a fan of Morel, his legs were in Sacramento and the game was in San Francisco. He was so far off the bag at first. Bam! Gotcha. This is so bad. But not even close though. Terrible. But again, no accountability. And as they said, Craig Council's going to join the show and he'll say, "Nothing." Here's Shea Norton. All right. The Titans star defensive end. Jeffrey Simmons is already throwing shade at Caleb Williams. Two and a half months before their week one opening showdown at Soldier Field. Jeffrey Simmons is on with Rich Eisen. Said he can't wait to talk trash to Caleb. Quote, "Painted nails." I can't wait to say that to him. Shot or no shot, this is the worst trash talk you've ever heard. No, that's a no shot. He's pointing out something that he feels like is a weakness or that Caleb is weak for having painted nails. So he's pretty much talking about his manhood. That's what he's doing. Correct. But he's calling it out early. I think he's odd. I think the trash talk is odd. Right. I mean, he's licking his chops already for the matchup against Caleb Williams. Two and twenty-sixth. I mean, okay. No, it's really talking about this guy's not really a... He's not a gamer. He's not a man. I'm going to cut his balls off. That's what he's saying. When I see him, I can't wait to get to those nails. Pretty much. Pretty much what he said. It just feels awful. Caleb Williams knows his nails are painted. He clearly doesn't mind. Do you think you're going to insult him? Yeah. Call him small if you get my meaning. Shae, how many calls did you feel about the Williams nails? Yeah, but my point is the people who called in and said that are losers. And Caleb, you're not insulting him. Well, right. You're not going to change city hall and that. That's what it is. People look at that as being soft. Not all people. Just dumb people. Think that you paint your nails. That's what he wants to do. There's a lot of young people that will paint it black or they play whatever they want to. It's part of their personality. But because I don't do it, you're strange. Exactly. Maybe Carl and Berwin is strange. I can't wait. I can't wait for the bears to kick ass. And then it's going to be guys coming up to the local pub, to the local tavern. Hey, what's going on? Hey, you see my nails? I'm like Caleb. I've got the past to pick this week. Screw off. Hey, Bill, take a look at these, huh? My wife did them for me. Just like Caleb, go bears with the bear claw. If I'm Caleb, I'm painting FU across my nails and just holding them right in Jeffrey Simmons' face after a touchdown. Right. Right in his face. I'm taking the gloves off with everything that's going to look like. Hey, Jeffrey. And it just hands you right on his nails. And let's take a look at the replay. Oh, there's some words on his fingernails. Yes. Back at a moment. There's more to moment here on Fox. The slow motion. Like the bump of the slow motion highlight. You just see FU. FU. So good. [SINGING] Chris Myers calling the game. Oh, those fingernails. That deserves a while. We apologize. We see some explicit language got across the screen in our bumpback con. Keep an eye on that moving forward. You got to put that in a hog tie. Mark Sanchez, they didn't say the wrong thing. [LAUGHTER] Because I lost the gosh, bears titans. If that's Fox, nothing says fifth booth. Then bears titans. Seriously. We're not getting the A booth for that. Dick Stockton out of retirement. Seriously. Nothing says fifth string booth than that. Noon kick, right? Yeah. Yeah, that's booth, booth five. That is, that is, that's a step above like a, like a mean. That's not him. That's not Adam Amin stink. No. I think it's lower than that, actually. The Sanchez back in the saddle. Dick Stockton and Mark Sanchez. Something like that. Exactly. Get the Sanchez. Chris Myers. Chris Myers is like Arizona Cardinals. That's the 320. It was the other old Sam Rosen. Sam Rosen. Touchdown. Touchdown. Chicago. Now there's the sidelines in the loop. What? [LAUGHTER] The worst. Thank God. Amin's in there. Touchdown. Touchdown. Slick. Auto bears. What? Amin is so good. I love that dude. I'm like the biggest Adam Amin guy. Now down to the sidelines in the loop. Thanks, Sam. Wiping his brow. Geez. [LAUGHTER] Wow. Oh. Jay Cutler under center. He's been under a lot of pressure from the Chicago Bears fans. Touchdown. They score. New York Rangers lead to the one. Get back to the hockey. Jerk. Around the NFL is next right here on Captain J. Hood. [LAUGHTER] Nick Bolst sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football evaluator. I love the Green Bay Packers. I'm in front. But there we go. This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winning. He starts to come at a moment. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's the answer you're looking for on these things here? [CHEERING] Time to go around the NFL here on Captain J. Hood. Here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Don't forget we're on YouTube as well. YouTube.com. Look for ESPN Chicago as well as on Twitch. We've got TV/ESP in 1000 Chicago. Around the NFL, here's Shane on it. Shane? You're just talking last segment about Caleb Williams. Pain F, you and his nails to respond to Jeffrey Simmons. Who wants to talk bleep about Caleb Payne, his nails. Birdo and Burrowing called in the break. He said, "What do we think about Caleb Williams painting his nails and doing the Beyonce single ladies music video dance in the end zone after every touchdown?" That'd be funny. I hope so. That's just one Google search. I will. You don't know what that dance is? No. I know who Beyonce is, but I have no idea what that dance is. They don't do that dance in Ravinia, so you wouldn't know. Not in Ravinia in two years. I don't think we went last year. We're not going this year. Bad schedule. Oh, people you didn't know. There wasn't anybody from the station that you listened to. That's what happened. That's what happened. Nobody I wanted to see. I actually Mindy didn't want to see, and I just go where she tells me to go. Yes. No one from Yachrod was featured, so that's why it's a no-go. And by the way, same for me too. Shout out. That's it. Smokey again. No shot. Smokey for how that's it. Not again. Happy Chanukah. Shake. CBS Sports hoodie released their top 25 players under 25 in the NFL. I don't want to go through the whole list. Come on. I was looking at the teams that were involved here. The Bears had zero players on the top 25 under 25. It used to be fun. Rookies were exempt. What I noticed was the Lions had the most of any team. Five players on the top 25 under 25. You and I have talked about, we think they're going to take a step back, but it did get me thinking. When you have five of the 25 best young players in this league, should we be a little bit more concerned that the Lions might be on the front end of what could be a 49ers-esque stretch in the NFC? Yes, and I still think that's sustainable, Shay. Like when we take a step back, I don't mean to take a step back out of the playoffs. That means maybe two wins less because here come the Bear. I look at it from that standpoint. There's always an injury or two, but I think that because the five players under 25, as you mentioned, that helps sustain the Lions because now you're not worried about trying to piecemeal it with, got to get this 32-year-old veteran and get this guy off the scrap heap just to make do. Now it's sustainable with young players. There's got to be somebody on a roster that should be on the 20. How many in the top 25 years old? Five. Just a line. No, how many total... 25 players. And we don't have one. That's correct. That's bull. Is that a Barwell article? No, but they excluded rookies. So think about next season. You could have Caleb in there. You could have Romadunze in there. All right, be patient. Not a big Barwell guy. What are you doing here? The teammate. Okay. Guess what? He works in Bristol. He's not a teammate. Sorry. He's not a good karma brand employee. He's not a teammate. He's a little overrated. Oh, sorry. Poor Bill Barwell. Tell us why he's overrated, Cap. I don't think his content is that good. I don't enjoy it. It's on the football team. He's like John Ham. Overrated. Okay. Hey. Smoky. What do you talk about? No, no. I just needed that. That's why I asked for the follow-up. Justin sent it to awful announcing right now. Immediately. No. Send it over. Send it over. Oh, no, no. I don't like him. He reminds me of John Ham. Boy, what a headline that's going to be. New York Post. Awful announcing. It's always negative. Ringer. Barwell's too negative on us. Always. Send it over, please. It's always negative. Why do you got to be negative about the bear always? Always. Listen. It's a photo fish. John Ham. John Ham's a very good actor. Every movie the guy's in, he's an ass. And so that's your jewel. To Top Gun Maverick. He's a jag. Are we talking about Bill Barnwell now or? No. John Ham. Okay. I don't understand how we got from point A to point B here. It's like Jay Cutler. Jay Cutler and Secretariat. Secretariat was the people's horse. Jay was a horse's ass. What are you comparing right now? Well, you've got Bill Barnwell to John Ham and Jay Cutler to a race horse. Yes. Send it over, please. I don't know if someone's clipping that and sending it out over to Bill Barnwell. And to the ringer to all the announcing. It's a photo fish between you and Courtney Cronin. Who's going to continue to be an awful announcing? Here's Jay Cutler. Jay. Leaving that alone. You don't have to leave it alone. It's packed. CBS Sports also listed the top 20 wide receivers heading into the 20-24 season. These were, again, excluded, so no Marvin Eris in junior, no Roma Dune, say, no Malik neighbors. But the Bears only had one receiver make the list. DJ Moore was named the top 20 receiver at CBS Sports at 13. My question is Keenan Allen. Should he have made this list? Is he a top 20 receiver? Or does the lack of consistent availability knock him out of that conversation? Maybe the list, kid. So the 20th receiver on the list. What just happened? This computer just reset. Amari Cooper. Would you rather have Amari Cooper or Keenan Allen? Keenan Allen. After that, I think we're done. Nico Collins, Davante Smith. Like if Keenan Allen's making the list, he's making it a 20. Is that fair? Yeah, I mean, I think he's a better player than Amari Cooper. What about the rest of the list? I'd have to see the whole list. He's not like, we had all of the, the, the cult members were also coming at me because I said, you remember DJ Moore was the 12th best receivers. Is that where I had him ranked? Yes. You're an idiot. He's a top five guy. What they just rank him in CBS 13. Which is fair. Fair. Always has been fair. Now this year, could he take a stop? Absolutely with Caleb. He doesn't have the guy who doesn't get the ball out on time. Drown it to him anymore. Sorry, cult. Shay? They're having a bad morning. They're mad at me. The cult or? Okay. Who will be the first 60 million dollar man in the NFL? I was reading an article in Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio, writing up, "Dak Prescott's the leader in the clubhouse. I've long believed I've set on this show. Dak Prescott will be the league's first 60 million dollar man." But Florio surprised me with something. He wrote that Jordan Love could be the NFL's first 60 million dollar man. He said, "If the Packers believe he's the guy, now's the time. Pay him whatever it takes. As long as you can build in a way to get out of it after two or three years in the contract, make him a 60 million dollar a year player." Could Jordan Love actually be the first 60 million dollar a year quarterback in the NFL? No shot. That's a different second. But no, he will not be. Because he hasn't proven it wrong enough. You know, that doesn't matter in today's sports. You know that. Keep telling him. You pay for potential. That's a great comment in 1993. But in 2024, this is where it is, Cap. Yeah, but, oh God. What is going on here? That's a fine. Dollars@burysbookbake.org. What happened there? Let me, take that. Sorry. Come on, Harry. Harry. I don't know. What is wrong with you today? I don't know. What do you call, you're calling Bill Barnwell John Hamm? What has happened to you? You know what's happened, folks? Let me explain to you what's happened to my part. Stop the music, Justin. Stop the music. Here's what's happened. What's happened to Cap is West Coast baseball. He's been burning the candle at both ends. That's true. He's been coaching. You know, he's been in practice. He's been in golf tournaments. And he hasn't had much sleep. The guy is just completely just torn. Look at him. Look at him. He's a ragamuffin. Look at him. He's tired. And now he's just coughing out of nowhere. Don't know why I cuffed. The reason I would not give him 60 million yet, and you know I've been one of his biggest boosters. Are you okay? You're in love. I'm good. He's done it for a year. He's not in free agency. It's not as though he's a bidding war. That's not the way it works here. I'm worried about you. Why? You're not doing well. Why? You're not doing good on the show today. You're underachieving today. I'm killing it today. Yo, yo. Are you? Are you killing it? Are you really killing it? Oh, yes. It's a Hall of Fame performance. Well, I mean, no one can take the Hall of Fame status away from you. It's always going to be a Hall of Fame performance. You're a Hall of Favourite. Oh, yes. But the point is, though, today you're in trouble. He's tired, folks. It's been a long week. I'm good, man. I'm ready to roll. Bad Cub team. Staying up. Recaps. Smashing stuff at home. Hopping out of nowhere. He's in trouble. She was so mad that I broke that thing in the office. I do want to ask you, Cap, because you're so against this idea of Jordan love getting paid like that. Yeah. When he gets paid more than Trevor Lawrence, I say when, not if. Back to the sport. Are you going to call it a mistake? No. He's a good player. They're rolling the dice. I would go to him and say, Jordan, we're going to do a four... How old is he? Twenty-four. I'm going to give you a four-year deal. I'm going to pay you forty-five million dollars a year. So that's one ninety. No, one eighty. I'm going to guarantee a hundred and ten of it. And that will let him get a bite at the free agency Apple in four years. It'll be twenty-nine. It'll be a seventy million dollar man. That's what I would do. And that's a look around the NFL right here on Capitol Jhood here on ESPN 1000. And streaming on the ESPN Chicago app coming up next. We have deal breakers. It's Thursday. It's deal breakers. And that's coming up next. Oh baby. Right here on Capitol Jhood. We all have to make choices in sports and in life.
