You can watch your show on YouTube, YouTube.com. Go to ESPN Chicago as well as on Twitch, Twitch.tv/ESPEN1000Chicago. For please be joined by ESPN college basketball analyst, it is the great coach, Fran Priscilla. He's a studio with us here on Captain Jay Hood. Coach, welcome. - What a thrill to be with you guys. - So awesome. - Yeah, Cap and I were together, as you know, Jay, a couple of weeks ago. He walked 23 miles. We figured it out. - Amazing. - And I had the time of my life, man. We did it. - That was fun, man. So appreciative of you doing that. And he and I were on opposite benches. He was on the Great Ohio University Bobcat bench. I was at NIU 1982. - Yes. - And what I love about Cap, and I know we'll talk bowls, but you could, I might not talk to him for four months. And when you call him, or he calls you, you feel like he, you just talked to him two days ago. - Yeah, very mutual. - Yeah, it's always great to, and I'm here. And I'm here on stage street and, you know, got some pizza last night. And I tried to get in the Woo Mount Audis, but it was crowded. - You should have called. - I know, I know. A little pizzeria on the Chicago River here on Wabash. - There you go. - A little neat little place. - Nice. - All good. - You have a plug. I don't know why you just didn't reach out to this guy. - No. I thought about it. - No, I'm not gonna. - I wouldn't have taken care of it. - No, we're not gonna do that. - So, okay, so the bowls are picking 11th. - Yes. - We'll get to that in a second. They acquired Josh Giddy, who's 22 years of age. They give up a 30 year old, probably their most marketable asset. If you're a team trying to win like Oklahoma City. So what do you think of that deal? - Well, you and I, when we talked last week, I thought they might've been able to squeeze a draft pick out on the stage. - That's what I was just saying to John. - Who knows, you know? I mean, listen, when you're dealing with Sam Presti, Sam Presti is really good at what he does, okay? And so that was my one complaint, but when you look at it in terms of the actual two players, and again, I'm a guy that watched Alex Caruso with Texas A&M when they were in the big 12. And I know the family, and he's a great kid, and obviously he was a very well-liked player here. But you always wanna trade a guy a year early, as opposed to a year late, 'cause a year from now, you're probably not getting a 23 year old Josh Giddy. And you know, the biggest two things with Josh, we're gonna talk, you're gonna talk about his shooting at Nausea all year, but he's a 6'8" playmaking guard, can rebound it, pass it, still has lots of upside. And quite frankly, Jay, he was stuck in OKC. The role that they had for him, just because of the way that team has evolved with Lou Dort and Che Gildes Alexander and Jaylin Williams, he's a good player, just got stuck behind some guys that are all stars. And so, I like it, I do. Now you gotta put shooting around him, but he's a good piece. I mean, in this draft, he might've been the number one pick. Think about that. In this draft, he could've been one or two or three. What's he got three years in the league already? - Yep. - And he's 22 years old. - Correct. - And if you were a college senior, I mean, I don't even know how good that we would've been. ESPN would've been doing like a bottom line of his stats. - Yeah, yeah. - You know, so I think overall, it's a good pick for both teams. OKC ready to win now, they are winning, they need a piece like Alex Caruso, and the Bulls need a playmaker. And then I think this kid has got a lot of upside. - I don't think there's any question about it. I think that this might be the beginning of the end for Lanzo Ball. This replaces Ball in that spot. Someone that could be able to distribute the basketball. I feel like we know that Sam Presley could be a hard liner. And even though on the surface, we're saying, hey, how come the Bulls didn't get a draft pick? Well, it's Sam Presley on the other end of the phone. - Yeah. - And so to me, this is like a draft pick because of how young Giddy is. I think that that makes sense. - Yeah, I mean, if you said to me that, again, like, I don't know if he would have been actually the number one pick. But I mean, this kid in this draft would be top three. But even in this draft cap, this is such a unique draft 'cause nobody knows anything. You know, nobody knows anything. Anybody who says they know what's gonna happen is lying. I'm talking about anybody in the NBA. And at least with Josh Giddy, you already know there's a proven commodity. This third year wasn't as good as his first two because of the depth in that back court. But I mean, I think it was two years ago, the average like 15 and I'm guessing like 15, seven and six or something. Something like that, you know? And at 21, you know, I think that's pretty good. And he's still only 22 years old. - Can you just wake up? I mean, you watch Oklahoma City is already the number one seed in the West. You have someone that's a lockdown guy like Caruso. That's a Swiss Army knife. There's so many different things. Along with Lou Dord, who I love, I can just watch a game and just isolate on him defensively. Oh my God. - Yeah. So them, Williams, Holmgren's development, SGA, that's gonna be another team to watch again. - In 2022, 2023, he averaged 31 minutes. - Yep. - 16.6 points. - Yep. - He shot 32.5 from three, but he averaged eight rebounds and 6.2 assists. - How about that? - Pretty good. - And he was like, he's probably 20 or 21 then. - Yes. - Probably 20. - Yes. - Yeah. - And that's, I mean, come on, in this league, as you would say, come on now. In our league, you love this game. (laughing) Hey, you love this guy, 'cause you know he's going to play hard every night, and he's going to get the ball in the painted area. (laughing) We all know this. (laughing) We all know this. (laughing) - That's exactly right. - Okay, come on. - Keep an eye on this kid. - Keep an eye. - You love this guy. - Keep an eye on this kid. (laughing) - So, if you look at the draft tonight. - Yes. - The balls pick at 11. - Yes. - I told you they walked out of it with either Dalton Connect, who I love. - Oh my God. - Or Terrence Shannon Jr. - Who I love. - Who you love. - I like him too. - Yeah, yeah. - So, if I told you one of those two is a ball, did they have a good night? - Yes, yes. I mean, Dalton Connect is, you know, Reed Shepherd is the standard in terms of shooting. His analytics, the young man from Kentucky, he was only 6'2". - Right. - His shooting numbers are ridiculous. I mean, I don't think since probably in the last decade, there's been a kid coming into the draft, but he's only 6'2". Dalton Connect is a sturdy, 6'5", 6'6". Tough athletic kid. How he developed over time is just amazing because he didn't have a college scholarship. He went to Juco. How about this? He was second team All Big Sky last year. This year, first team All-American playing for Rick Barnes in Tennessee. But the shooting component is elite and-- - Is he Doug McDermott? - Well, he's better at it. - He's better at it. - I think he's better at it. - He's better for the NBA. He's better for the NBA. You know, Doug's kind of like Zack Edie in that prolific, incredible college player, which we got to get into Zack a little bit. - Yeah, we will. - 'Cause that's incredible. But yeah, he's better than Doug. In terms of positionally, he's athletic. Now, he's not a good defender, but he's athletic enough to, and he played for Rick Barnes, so you think he has to improve there. But great shooter, fearless player, tries to dunk on you. And I think his vibe will be great for a Bulls fans, 'cause I think they'll like the effort. - Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. - But he plays with passion, but so does Terrence Shannon. I told you guys during the break, what I love about T. Sniper, that's his Twitter handle. - Yeah. (laughs) - And I've watched this kid since Texas Tech Days. Great young man, great smile. People are gonna fall in love with him. I kind of hope he does end up back here. Now, I know there's pressure, but I always handled it. And, but I would love to see him come back here where he played in the public league. And he is the best, or one of the three best, I would say Ron Holland is the best in transition, the high school kid. But Terrence Shannon, Jay is amazing in transition. He used to be a dominant left-handed player. He's improved the right hand quite a bit. He's hard to guard in the open court and plays with great energy and that smile that I think is infectious. - That's the thing about this draft that you mentioned Fran is like, you know, I don't know what to reach and what isn't. Like, if connects there, if I'm the Bulls, absolutely, if Shannon's there. And I've seen all these different mocks saying that he's low, low first round, high second, but if it's a fit, it's a fit in this draft. It doesn't, the dominoes don't seem to just connect to everybody in this draft. - You know, it's a great point, Jay, because I don't even know who's, I think Risa Shea is going number one based on what I've heard, the 6'9" forward from France with the honks, but this is, there is the, now in 2013, when Cleveland took Anthony Bennett, there was a lot of mystery in that draft, but I've never seen a draft where, depending on who takes who at one or two or four or seven, that it changes the dynamic of who takes who next. And in this draft, honestly, we say it a lot. You can't ever say bad draft because that was a bad draft, but Giannis went 15, he can go bare one 27. There are so many players in this draft that are gonna go 11th or 18th or 21st, that could be the best player in the draft, because there's no victor, there's no Zion. And again, I said it at the very beginning, I think I know a lot about the draft, you guys are basketball guys, I know nothing, other than what I'm hearing, and I also don't know, and just if I can mention Zach Edie, 'cause I know there's a lot of Purdue fans here, this kid had the best career at center. I'm gonna ask you guys to go back in time and tell me a college center who was two-time all American, two-time player of the year, put the numbers he put on. - Ralph Sampson. - Yeah, I would say you'd have to go back to David Robinson and Ralph Sampson, right? - And Hansborough was a great college player. - That's right, but six, nine. - Correct. - This kid-- - Seven, three. - Legit. - Legit, maybe bigger, and like seven, 10 wingspan. But here's the problem, all the analytics fit for him to be a great player except we're not sure because of the transition and the speed of the game. And if you draft this kid, which I know somebody's gonna take him probably, I honestly think he's gonna go higher tonight than what people think, you better have a coach on board, you better figure out that for six minutes in the second quarter, we're gonna slow the game down and play through him, 'cause if you don't play through him, there's no reason to draft him. But the amazing thing, you ready for this? He drew nine plus fouls per 40 minutes this year. You cannot guard this kid, even in the NBA without fouling him. So he's on your second unit, and all of a sudden, Carl Anthony Towns has three fouls in the first half. - Right. - You know what I mean? He got 37 against Donovan Klingen in the final because Bobby Hurley, excuse me, Danny Hurley didn't double him. He got 37. And now, I'm not sure if he's gonna make it, but that's the kind of unique draft issue. - So this comes full circle in basketball, guys. - Yeah. - So if Edie works, we're back to the big again, which is great, by the way, because I don't know, I like inside, outside play. - Yeah. - So if Edie works, Cap, and again, doesn't shoot it well, he's not a big, they can shoot it well from three, he's just a guy from the foul line down that can be able to give you the high percentage shot, give you the foul line. Okay, so what if this works? - Now, everyone's gonna want the big plotting center that can score from the inside. - We'll go back. - We'll go back to where we were, right? - See, we're old enough, Cap and I, that the game cycles. - It does. - Yeah. - You know what I mean? I always say, nothing's been invented in basketball unless your name is Ibah, Newell, B, you know, and then maybe Winter. - Naismith. - Naismith, yeah. Other than that, there's nothing new in basketball. It all cycles through. - Right, everyone thought, oh, we're just gonna shoot threes the rest of the time. - No, it's gonna go back. - There's gotta be a healthy balance, you know? - Fran, when organization could pick as an ED4 to work? - You know what's crazy? I mean, I said, I mentioned his name earlier, like if Sam Presti takes this guy at 12, the rest of the week because of the way they've drafted, you go back to Durant and Westbrook and Harden and know more recently now. - Oh, everyone's gonna be like, oh God. What does he know? - What does he know? - What's he know? - He's drafting hard and right. - Can pop go up there and get up. - Well, you know what, I know this, like if the Spurs have four and eight so they could do some damage tonight. But if, you know, like if pop were to take him, there's some talk that he might take Klingon and play him with women, Yama. - Sure. - You know, like the, remember the old days they had Duncan and Robinson, so. - They have his towers. - Yeah, so it'll be, it's a very intriguing draft because nobody knows anything. - Well, we know something. We know that you can tell us exactly what the Bulls need 'cause we just went through it in our last segment in our last half hour talking about the question marks on this Bulls roster. What's needed for the Bulls? We'll talk to Fran Fichela about that and more. Captain J. Hood, weekday morning seven to 10. - Welcome back to Captain J. Hood. You're officially locked in. ♪ I know it's a whiskey ♪ - And Chicago's on for sports. ESPN, Chicago. (upbeat music) Coach Fran Fichela from ESPN is with us as we get ready for the NBA draft on Captain J. Hood here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN, Chicago app. So coach Cap and I called Bronny James game here in Chicago at Wind Trust. You recall this, right Cap? - Yep, they lost, they won over Glen Bard West who won the state title here. And they had the kid that went to UCLA from that Sierra Canyon team. - Okay, yeah, I'm trying to think of who that would be. - He was their best player. - And Amari. - Amari. - Yeah, Amari Bailey. - Yeah, from Amari Bailey. - You're in G League now. - But I want you to give your scouting eyes 'cause we did the games together. Your scouting report on Bronny James and then see whether that jives with what you have. - So I got there super early as did Jonathan. And I mean, there's 5,000 people there for warm ups to watch Bronny James. - Oh my God. - I was wildly underwhelmed. I thought he was heavy legged. - Cerebral, very, very sharp. Like you could tell he grew up in a basketball world. He understands how to play. A little slow on his release of his jump shot, not overly athletic, not just he's okay. Like if his name was Bronny for Shilla, he's not getting drafted tonight. - No, no, no, no. - Does that jive with you? - Yeah, absolutely. You know, listen, first of all, before I give you my honest assessment of him as a player, let's just say, LeBron has been an icon for 20 years. He's been a great standard bearer for the league. - Yep. - He's one of the great players of all time, one of. And by all accounts, his son is a wonderful kid. Okay, everybody who knows him, I know a lot of people out there. - They love him. - They love him, okay. Also mitigating circumstance, a heart issue last July. Was not back on the court until December, right? And in this, you know what, boo-booey should have been invited to the combine. - Right, from Northwestern. - Who's a tremendous kid and maybe he's a next Fred Van Vliet. - Yeah, fair. - Okay, and may not get drafted, may not get drafted. And he's terrific, I love boo-booey. I think what's gonna happen is he's gonna get drafted 55th by the Lakers, he's going to play in South Bay, which for those of you listening is the G League team. And their practice facility is where the Lakers practice also, so he's gonna be with Dad every day. It's not a bad thing, you know how I feel about my son. - Yeah. - You too, right? So, and then what's gonna happen? He's gonna play in the G League and he's gonna have his ups and downs and have some nights where he gets like 17 and they beat Erie or somebody like that. (laughing) Okay, and then on a random Tuesday night in March, when the Pistons are coming to town, you're gonna see, you're gonna be talking about this. Hey, Lakers are bringing up a Bronny tonight. And it's gonna be the first time in NBA history that a father and son are playing together. And we're all gonna be in ESPN, the mothership. - Right. - You know, we know what's gonna happen with Steven, hey. And it's gonna be a big deal and we're all gonna watch. - No question. - And it's not Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. 'cause Ken Griffey Jr. might actually have a better jump shot than Bronny. (laughing) - No question about it. We've never questioned about it. - Not to denigrate Bronny, but he's a project. And you normally don't draft a 6-2 project. And, but if your dad, and remember this now, 18 roster spots, 15 plus to three, two ways. And so, yeah, I mean, the end, Ted DeCunbeau brothers have three championships. - Correct, dude. - And they only have one player in the family. - Right. - So, I'm okay with it. I'm because it's LeBron and Bronny. And, but, boobooey. I'd rather have boobooey on my team than Bronny James. It's just the way it is. - He's a dog, man. - Yeah. And there's probably other guys like her. - Yeah. - Obviously, they aren't getting drafted tonight. - Boobooey, it's a dog. - He's a dog. He's a dog. - He's a killer. - He's a Fred Van Vliet type. - Yep. - That could make a team. And then you go, "How'd this kid not get drafted?" - Correct. - Uh, Rockford, right? - Yeah. - Yeah. - Rockford Fred, that's where he went. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Yeah, went to Wichita State. Yeah. - That's where he played for. - Greg Marshall. - Greg Marshall. - Yeah. - Who was a maniac? - Oh, wow. - Hell of a coach, boy. - Well, coach, I mean, you're in the land of Lincoln, where all the great players are from, is you well know? - Yes. - It's only one place right here in the Chicago land area. That's where you find all the great players. - There's a few. - There's a few. - There's four going in the top 20. - Well, the kid tonight, Sarr, is... - Sarr is a friend. So, Risa Shea may go one. He's a wing. - Yep. - He's the overwhelming favorite. - Yeah. And he's not even like, in a normal draft, he's fifth or sixth. - Mm-hmm. - But he has a position. Sarr is seven, one, long and lanky. Nobody definition up top. That's gonna be an issue. But he's an athletic kid. He'll go to Washington, probably. John Saloon is a 6'9" kid who's gonna go on top 15. And then, my sleeper is Pakkom Datier. - Like that? - Pakkom Datier. - He was a kid, a French kid playing in Germany this year, who's a 6'9" wing, who's a good player, who should go on a top 20. And if not, he'll be a steal. - Every time we talk to someone about the Bulls outside of Chicago, the answer on the other side of the phone is, "I don't know what they're doing. What are they doing? I don't know what they're doing. You heard that? I've heard that as well. And I had a coach tell me, "What are they doing?" - Yeah. - I don't know what they're doing. That's what we keep hearing. - Yeah, that's not good. - So what's best for the Bulls right now? Because we feel that it's still gonna be moving parts. I mean, Caruso's one piece. I feel like there's gonna be more. But what's best for them as far as Billy Donovan and that young core? - Well, I feel bad for Billy. I know Billy a long time. And I think, you know, Billy, if you, you know, I think we were talking about this a couple weeks ago. If you look at Billy's record in the NBA, it's like, he wins 59% of his games. - Yeah. Billy's a really good coach. - Billy's a really good coach. - And a great dude. - Of course, of course. And the problem with the Bulls is they're stuck between tearing down and trying to get to win, you know, to me a great season this year, just on paper, is you get the 42 wins. It's a great year. - Right. But then if you do, you're not picking and your pick is not in the top 10, so you convey it to San Antonio. - Yeah, no question. And that's another reason to tear it down because of the protected pick. - Correct. - And to me, the problem with tearing it down, I said this to you earlier, and I'll say it here, you know, and, you know, it's hard for a guy who's been in his fourth year to tear it down because then you say to yourself, well, what did you build for four years? And so if you, they should tear it down and start over to the way Washington is doing it now, the way OKC did it, the way the Nets are doing it with assets. And because there's a, there's a couple of kids on this team that I think are going to be good players. - It's not enough to be any factor going forward for the next five years. - Right. - And I would think tearing it down would be smart. And it's tough because as a basketball fan, I know when you say Chicago Bulls, it's like saying Green Bay Packers, it's like saying New York Yankees, it's like saying New England Patriots, you know, I know the history here, and I know that to your point, Jay Hood, the love of basketball in this community, the city, and so that's hard when you're going to win 15 games. I mean, to Washington Wizards won 15 last year. - Horrible. - Yeah. - Horrible. - That's tough, but I do think, I do think that they're going to go nowhere unless they tear it down. - I completely agree with you. A thousand percent. - So Coach, how can we get you into Chicago more often? I think the reason why you're not here is because we don't give you enough basketball to call. I think that's a problem in this, in this area. - ESPN, you know, we don't have anything right now because we don't have the big Easter, the big 10. My contract is up, but hopefully that'll get resolved here in the summer, but I love coming to Chicago. I love seeing Cap. I love all my basketball friends here, and I happen to be, I'll be at United Center tonight with Shams, - Yep. - Toronto, Chicago guy, and Robbie Hummel, and other, you know, adopted Chicago guy. - Yeah, he's right, he's right, he's awesome. - He's awesome. - Yeah, Robbie's great. We're going to be together at the United Center for Stadium on Twitter and streaming, and you know what? You got an ex-MBA player in Robbie. You got a coach. I don't know for the wife of me how you could have a draft show without a coach. - Agreed. - Because if you draft, if you draft Zach Edie, then you go to the coach and say, "Hi coach, you're the coach of the Toronto Raptors, they just take a Zach Edie with you. - How does he fit? - How does he fit? How do you play him? And, but I'm going to have a blast with Shams, and they won't be out, ESPN, so I'm going to kick ass tonight. - That'll be a lot of fun. I'm going to follow that. I can't wait. It's going to be fun, and it's always fun to come to Chicago. - I'm actually going back to coaching. - No. - I took a job. - You think? - I'm coaching a 10-year-old group of kids in the Niles Park District Summer League. Our first game is tonight. - Oh, man. 6.55. - I love it, man. Good luck. Jay Hood, great to see you, man. - It's just Jack alone. - Take it out. You said, "I'll never coach again!" Take that. - He did tell me that it's a good team. - He's got talent. - He's got some good players. - Yeah, wait until you get that call. You get screwed on. You go back to 1980. He's going to grow here again, and he's going to be angry, and he's going to get kicked out of a 10-year-old's game. - Boy, his team at OhioU. - Oh, man. Were they good? - Well, we used to love him. Yeah, we grew up in this business, and it's been fun to watch him do his thing here. - So there's a kid that he coach who's from here. Remember Dick Stanfield, the Bears' old line coach? His son Rich. - Rich Stanfield. - We tried to get him to transfer to us. He transferred to OhioU, and they had a rule. No open layups. And they didn't care if they were up 100. And one of our guys was going in for a layup, and Stanfield knocks him into the basket. Rich listens to the show. - You know, every day, I'm going to text him after the show, because I missed him last time. But 610-260, Libertyville, transfer from LSU. And unfortunately, his dad, who's a legend in many ways here, did good staff and a great player. I just think a few years ago was finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall thing. - Right. - So, really cool. And Rich has done very well here in Chicago. - Yeah, Rich took our guy down into the basket. - That's the only thing. - That's the only thing. - It was the old thing. - That would have been a flagrant, too. - Yeah. - Rich might have committed a few flagrant threes back in those days. - Yes. - It was an automatic ejection. - Yes. - But Rich is great. I love her. We tweeted each other all the time. - Yes, I do, too. I'm going to text them right after the show. - Good dude. - Yeah. - So... - Brian, thanks for stopping by. - A pleasure. - Have a great show tonight. I'll be watching it. - Thanks, Cap. Great to see you guys. - You, too. - Brian Priscilla with us here on Captain Jay Hood, coming up next a movie review. Maybe you were going to go see this movie, but maybe not. A lot of guys that do what he does as far as breaking down the draft and travels internationally and finds out about these guys, they will tell you, oh no, this guy's going here and this guy's going here. This is a fit for this particular team in the NBA. You know what? He's just honest. He's like, I don't know. And actually nobody knows. Because that's how wide open this draft is. There are no shining stars in this draft that's going to take place tonight. That is exactly correct. There are no, there's not one guy. You heard him when he said the kid from France who's going to go probably number one. He's minus 250 on all the betting sites to Atlanta. That kid would be like the fifth or sixth pick on any other draft. He said Josh Giddy might go number one if he was in this draft. I think that is correct. Just based on the experience. Even though Giddy is still a raw talent cap, he's not a finished product. No, he still would be better than probably Reed Shepherd. Completely agree. Reed Shepherd, I mean the question is, can you get a shot off in the NBA? Get it off in Kentucky. Can you get it off in the NBA? You got size with Klingen, the UConn guy, shot blocker, size. Not a great three point shooter, inside scorer. I don't know. There's a lot of guys that I'm looking at and I'm saying a lot of these guys are projects. Usually in the draft you get a couple that you say that guy is ready for the spot level of the NBA. A lot of these guys, they're not. They'll be, we'll go back five years ago. God, what a terrible draft. But there'll be somebody go like 29 that makes it and you're like, whoa. Yeah. Isn't that the spot where like Fran was talking about the draft with Janis and Gobert was a terrible draft quote unquote. And Janis went in the mid round. 14 or 15. Yeah. So isn't this kind of a spot where you're the Bulls and it's a draft like this where everybody's a project. Just take the kind of biggest athletic freak that you can on the board and hope that in two years they pan out. Otherwise everybody else probably missed two. Yeah. Yeah. The risk is they did that with Patrick Williams. Like the solid pick and Arturis was on with us. The last time we got a bite at that apple. Arturis said we loved Tyrese Halliburton. He tested well. His interviews were amazing. His workouts were incredible. But he said we swung for the grand slam because Patrick Williams was 18 years old. Ridiculously athletic. Talented. Good guy. All that. Well, how'd that work out? It's kind of funny that we talk about the 2013 draft in that way saying that it was a bad draft. Again, we talked about Janis and Rudy Gobert was in that draft. But you got a draft filled with pieces. I'll put a junior long career. Cody Zeller long career. Nerlan Snowell. KCP. Contagious Caldwell Pope. Trey Burke. Steven Adams. Kelly Olenik. You got some players there. They were not necessarily superstars but there's guys with longevity in the league. Correct. But when you draft somebody number one like in the NFL. Dennis Schroeder. Yeah. You expect. Oh, we took a guy in the top 10 in the NFL. You should be a Hall of Famer. You know, I told you that story of me when I was calling Chicago Bulls G League games. The Winnie City Bulls games on the radio. And the Anthony Bennett's team came in. The G League team for Cleveland. And I was like, Oh, get a chance to see this number one pick. Anthony Bennett. Number one overall. And I'm calling the game. And I'm looking over at the bench. And he doesn't get off the bench. Is he hurt? Nope. They're not playing him. Couldn't play in the G League. He knows that he's Bennett. And he was the number one overall pick. I'm looking down the bench like they're going to kill. I mean, he's not starting. Oh, maybe he'll come off the bench. Never got off the bench. That's how bad that was as a number one pick. That was a swing and a miss. Huge Anthony Bennett. Has to be one of the worst number one picks of all time in any sport, right? Has to be. Has to be. All the depots in that draft too. That's it. And by the way, Shay, as I told you before, when we're going through the pandemic and still doing shows, that was me at night. We were redrafting teams, redrafting drafts. Bill Simmons podcast. We had to go. We were doing the 1983 draft again. Had to. Dad, what's your favorite color? So we were doing with no sports. Crazy. Shay, you went to get a chance to see a movie yesterday. We don't need rotten tomatoes when we've got Shay. So what did you see yesterday? I went and saw the new movie, The Bike Riders. It's about the, it's based on the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle gang back in like the '60s, early '70s. Never heard of the movie. Never heard of the Outlaws. Never heard of the movie. They fictionalized it. So in the movie, it's the Vandals. And hoodie, usually when I review a movie on this show, I like it a lot. This is the first time I can say I did not enjoy the film at all. In fact, I was really, really disappointed because I expected to like it quite a bit. But for a movie that is about the Chicago Outlaws to film in Cincinnati, at no point in the movie could I get over it. In the first like 15 minutes, there's a scene where the character, the wife of one of the riders is talking about first time I saw them all and I was on the back of the bike. And she's doing it in like this thick kind of almost Minnesotan accent. They're all interjecting their sentences with a very Minnesotan. You know, you know, all the time. Like, I don't ever hear people say that. And she's like the first time we're on the bike, we get on the freeway and they show them going on to the freeway coming up over like the crest of a bridge on the expressway and behind them is hills and houses on the hills and lights on top of the hills. That's not Chicago. Where in Chicago is that? No, that's not Chicago. If they go into the city and it's like big gaps between the houses on curved roads, I'm like, what are we doing here? I, um, that's really a disconnect because you can talk to anybody from the 1960s. Oh, talk to Cap. You can kind of know what life was back then in Chicago and how the city was building and how, you know, people coming from the south and moving north to be able to have opportunities for jobs and stuff. There's no hills and no one talked like a Minnesotan. Correct. He's saying that people talk like they're from Minnesota or the Dakotas. Well, that's not how we speak. Yeah, we don't speak that one. It's ever did. And apparently so the one character's voice apparently is very accurate to what the real life person sounded like. So I'll forgive that. But a lot of like the mannerisms in the way that they were speaking, they were using and maybe it was different in the 60s. Obviously I was born in the 90s. I don't know. But they were using stuff that I associate more with a Minnesotan dialect than I would ever with Chicago. Mm. That's a swing and a miss. There's bizarre. I did not enjoy it. I thought it was boring too. I was like, ugh. It says on my sheet pile of trash. That's what it says here. I think it's the worst Chicago movie I've ever seen because nothing in the movie looked anything like Chicago. You can't do a Chicago movie and film it in Cincinnati. You can't. It's not the same city. You can't have hills in the background of your Chicago city shop. That's correct. It's insane. There's no lake anywhere. Unless it's good times. Yes. You mean all of them like Michigan. I'm saying in the movie. Oh, there's no lake in the movie. No, because there's no lake in Cincinnati. What are they going to do? There was hills in good times. Yes. Why? That Chicago skyline looks a little small there. Yeah. AKA. There is no Chicago skyline ever in the film. Yeah. Riding out on the expressway. And I'm like, is that supposed to be the skyline? And it's just really dark. There's no lights on. Oh no, that's a hill. Where the hell is this? This is a very Hollywood friendly city. We make tons of movies here. That's correct. From the Batman movies to the fugitive to this and that. Did Chicago not want them shooting the movie here? Were they too expensive? Like any backstory on why they would choose to film it in freakin' Cincinnati? I googled that as I was walking out of here. I could sketch from our VP of marketing. Is she the one making the call? Because she's from Cincinnati. Maybe. Why? As I was walking out of the theater, I googled where was it filmed? Because watching it, I felt like it was Pittsburgh. And I could figure out where it was. So I googled it and it says Cincinnati and I just shut my phone off. I'm like, I don't want to hear anymore. You can't do that. You know, it's so funny. We're such a big city. And many people have come here to visit or they've got family here. People know, right? If you made a movie in Los Angeles and it looked like, you know, it looked like Texas or southern Texas, people would know. That's not LA. People are not ignorant. People know that when they see Chicago, whether it's in the 60s or 2024, what the skyline looked like. A lot of people, you know what I say? More than you know, TV shows in some movies miss it when it comes to this city. And don't understand what it's supposed to look like. I mean, up and down the streets, the Woolworths and all the shops and stuff and everything else in the homes where a certain level, the bungalows, there's a certain look. And it's still here in 2024. Correct. Not much has changed. Remember, we had Woolworth Goldblatt? Yeah. It looks a certain way. Carson, Perry, Scott, and Company, Sears, Montgomery Ward. Like, it was all different, man. One Google search. Oh, brothers. You could see what it looked like in the 60s. And it could have been a bit of that. But instead, I got curved roads and like, weird factories and hills. I'm like, this would never have been Chicago at any point. This is ridiculous. I'll miss it. You imagine, like, the departed great Boston movie. Imagine they filmed it in New York or Philly. You would tell the difference. Yes. There's a difference. Or El Paso. Where there's going to be an NFL team. Right. Right. They're doing good fellas and they're filming it in Seattle. Right. But it makes sense. So there you have it, folks. The review of bike riders. Do not go see it. Bad. Don't go see it. Wait for streaming. All right. Coming up, we will give you the cap and jhood cut of the day. That's right around the corner. Hang it on. On the cap and jhood morning show. Welcome back. Welcome back. Welcome back to cap and jhood. It's boring, but it's a sport. Oh! Whatever. It's not boring. Okay. Then you're boring. All right. Cap, would you paint your nails on Thursday? I'm thinking about painting my nails Thursday morning. No. I will not. Oh. No. No. Why would I do that? Why not? For what reason? Because you're such a Caleb lover. You want to paint the nails. Caleb action. No. It's not me. I got to be me. I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea. There's some that want to reach through the radio right now punch me in the face. Bring a platoon, pack a lunch, take your best shot. I'm okay with that. No. He means bring your lawyer. Did he just dare people to come punch him in the face, would he? What happened? Time for caps. Punch a cap, Dave. Do you think you can scrape it? Oh. Line up across state and lake and you get a chance to take a shot at David Kaplan. 3-1-2. Come on in. Call in. Qualify for a chance to hit cap in the face. And that's, I'm okay with that. I don't want everyone to agree with me. That's boring. But paint my nails isn't my thing. And that's all, folks. Hey, classic cap and jhood cut of the day. Brought to you by Chicago cuts. They cost special lunch, special dinner, business, personal. Need a private room. They just renovated upstairs is amazing for weddings and other private events. On the south, north side of the Chicago River. Cap today. Oh, by the way, we should find out the latest on what is going on with your bag. Because we were talking about this. Cap goes to Toronto, has a great excursion. Going out to have golf have a good time. But he just didn't have all his luggage. So we talked about this. Previously. On cap and jhood. So what is the latest on this? A guy called during a break. Ironically. I answered, I said, "Oh, an 888 number. What's this?" I answered it. And said. Yellow. Yes, with a Y. And he said, "I'm calling from Air Canada." I said, "Oh, wow. Actually, if human's there, how can I help you?" He said, "It's been escalated to my desk to try and locate your bag. I'm calling from Montreal. Do you have a few minutes to talk with me?" No, I'm on the air right now. But I will be free at 10 o'clock central. He said I will call you at 10 o'clock central. So I'm expecting you to call here in five minutes. I see. Today is a busy day for you. Because you are coaching tonight, your first game. Correct. First time coaching since '19, what? '88. Since 1988. When I was coaching in the sixth 400 under pro league and '86 when I was a college coach. Do you know your opponents, the team? I could give you that right now. Because I know you've done, you know, a lot of film on the other teams. Oh, yeah. That hasn't happened. I have not done film. Oh, wow. No. About that. We play the Eagles tonight. I see. The captains were the K against the Eagles. And I did not pick the name of the team. Danny did. I see. Yeah. And it's misspell because of you being the coach. Uh, the K is correct. That is correct. I see. Yeah. And we are playing in Niles. '7800 North Caldwell Avenue tonight. '7800 North Caldwell Avenue. Okay, we're looking for a sellout here. We're your first game. Yep. Okay. We're ready to go, man. Are you predicting victory tonight? Are you saying that for sure? You got it locked in tonight because you're the head coach. Absolutely not. We're missing some of our guys because of baseball. Hmm. That next boy up on this spot. Next boy up. Exactly right. Do you have means? Well, I would imagine if it's next boy up, then it won't be in a problem tonight. This will be easy breezy for you. Experience coach around for a long time. No problem tonight. All I ask is that they play hard. Just we get after it, man. We hustle. That's it. Yes. Set your screens legally. I don't want to see hips shot out or elbows. We set legal hard screens and we are unselfish and we make the extra pass. I see. I see. I see. My name is got a really good shopping. Charlie in Candela has a better look. Get the ball of Charlie. Let's go. That should be interesting tonight. We look forward to a sellout, folks, to check this out. Cap's first game since the 80s. 1988. Oh boy. Over under technicals. I'm going in the over. I'm going to send that to. I'm not getting three technicals. They eject me from the building. Well, they're going to win a little league. They've got to toss you. Yeah. Might be one. That's a terrible call. Oh god. Mount Kaplan will be there. Bam. There's no question about that. Mount Kaplan will be there. I can't wait to see this. Haven't had a T since the 80s. We thank you. I don't know why. Lipton is always on the shelves. We thank you for listening and calling in to being part of the program. Let's do this tomorrow at 7. Let's do it, man. Have a great night. So long, everybody. Take that from Chicago. [MUSIC PLAYING]
