Just not going away anytime soon. It has just been just a beige baseball team. It's just been a team that's completely underachieved. It's been heard a lot, a lot of injuries. Yes, but the point is, though, is that the Cubs are just not playing good baseball. They take on Tampa San Francisco on the West Coast. Cliff Floyd, Chicago zone was on marquee networks as the Cubs fight is just gone. What's frustrating is as soon as the team gets down early and there's a couple runs scored against them, it feels like it's 10 nothing. It feels like the fight is gone. And when you think about the start in pitching, that's been the all star of the first half. They've been tremendous. So very frustrating to watch a team on a really special day come out a little flat, as far as with Samberg statue and all that his day. So I don't know, it just seems like every time the team gets down, they sort of feel like they're out of the game as opposed to what we saw yesterday. That's the fight that I thought this team was about. And it's just not there consistently. It's not there. And Cliff Floyd is absolutely right. Cap, when you think about this, the Mets have been rallying. I told you, since Grimace was through at the first pitch, they've been winning a lot of baseball games. But I'm telling you that this Cubs team is just ordinary. They're just ordinary. But think about our Bears conversations. We had a couple of years ago, you and I. When we were telling everybody, hey, the Bears aren't ready to win yet because of talent. People laughed at that. Like, oh, what are these guys talking about no talent? You can't win without talent. The Cubs do have some talent. But as I've been telling you a lot, they just don't have enough difference makers right now. They've always had good on base percentage guys. I think starting pitching is good enough to win. But stars win games, stars win championships, stars win everything. And with this Cubs team, it's just ordinary. Just bland at this point in time. Very well said. It's vanilla. There's no star power. There's nothing compelling. Like, who's the face of the team? Who's the face of the team in Menaga? He's been here like nine minutes. Yep. And that says, all you need to know, right? Like, no, I'm just, I'm serious. Like, like, that's all you need to know. It's not Cody Bellinger. It's not. Yeah, I don't think it's him and I think he's good. Well, I don't think it's him. Yeah, who is it then? Dan, Dan's B. Jed. It's a name that people know. It's the face that people know. But cap, they're cheap. They don't spend any money. They got a $230 million payroll. Again, can they spend more? A hundred percent. A hundred percent. I think they could spend a lot more. Now, again, I'm not, I don't have their, their bank records, but they can absolutely spend more. But if you're the owner, you're saying, hang on a second now. I'm the guy that's cheap. And that's what I'm getting for $230 million. Really? Like, they don't, if I said to you, Jonathan, you have a son. I know you don't, but you did. He's 10. And he wants a Cubs jersey. But it can't be an old player. He wants a current player. Who are you buying? Who are you buying? Che, Jay Moore. Jay Moore, you got a son. You were at my house. He likes baseball, I know he's a Sox fan. But what cup jersey? None. Sandberg, Sano, Williams, Banks, not them. Say. Current player, not Ron, say. Who are you buying your son, a Cubs jersey of? Ah, that's tough, man. Yes. They don't have a face right now. They don't have a face. Well, I know you don't want it to believe that, but it's Iminaga. It's shoulder is the face of the Cubs, even though he's out there once every five days. He is. He's got the most personality on the team, next to Morrell. He does have personality. I mean, he is. I mean, the funny out of the Cubs clubhouse is him. Is it not? Yeah, Mike Iminaga the second. I mean, it's... He's better like nine minutes. I understand that. And the other guy would be Morrell. And I know he's scuffling though, but he's got a lot of personality, a lot of, he's got a good vibe. But neither guy speaks like regularly in English. Like, you don't have a guy. Here we go. That's the truth. Like, how do you talk to your fan base? Like, you're good. You're listening to the Patriot. Oh, I'm being serious here. I'd be serious. I don't do that, Cap. Everything's got to be through his translate and I get it. Who is the guy that is the, when things are down that they go to and stand there and he talks? Name me a guy. Two years ago it had been in half. Correct. Does, does, uh... Will he balance your do that? Speak English, yes. No, does he stand up there and take the heat? No. He doesn't say... Boo. The problem... He did a bit mellow. Yes. The problem with this country and this team is that no one speaks English anymore. I'm not talking about that. That's a baseball team. What do you mean? An American. What do you mean you're not talking about it? (laughing) No, what I'm saying is who is the person like when they were struggling in 18. Rizzo stood there at his locker and spoke for everybody. Of his, Brian wasn't going to say blank with a mouthful. Nothing. American. Rizzo would speak. Jason Hayward would speak. American African. There were certain guys that would stand up there and they would deliver a message. Joe Madden, Joe Madden was wildly entertaining. He would speak. Counsel doesn't say much. He doesn't. He's monotone. Well, showed ahead an okay night. Javier got hit by the long ball. Severino was hit. Show some life, please. A pulse. Clear. Are you alive? Nobody. You don't hear anything. Who's speaking for them? I think the problem in this country is we need an American that could step up and speak for the Cubs. I don't care where you're from. Speak, somebody be the face of this thing. Somebody, please. Alongside Rush Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you here on Captain Jay Hood here on ESPN 1000. We talked to you about the Cubs. Yeah, I'm not even kidding. There's no one that just is the leader of this whole thing. Like, who's the leader of the team? Name me one guy. What do you, do you want hard of you to smash the bullpen phone? He's the bullpen coach. I mean, the pitching coach. It doesn't matter. I need a player. Like, man, you walked in that locker room with the Bears when they were good in the early 2000s. Erlacher and Olin ran that thing. They were leaders in there. Who's the guy here? Half of them looked like they just walked out of a dispensary, hey, man, it's okay, it's June. I mean, come on. It's embarrassing. There's no life coming out of there. They need a shot of freaking adrenaline. You know, who's laughing is the Milwaukee Brewers and ESPN Milwaukee laughing. No question. Laughing at the Cubs. Every right to do laughing. You better laugh now because Caleb's coming. So get it out now. Okay, let's focus on the baseball now because that's where we are. It's just not good enough, Cap. But again, here's why this is unique. This will be the first time that you and I are talking about a Cubs team, especially if it goes like this to the deadline or the Cubs stand still at the deadline. Stand still at the deadline, unless they're gonna add, because as you mentioned, who are you trading? You looked at the lineup, you went through it a bit by bit, all through the pitching and the position players and you said, I'm not sure they'd be trading anybody at the deadline. You didn't say that. - I did. - It means you're not going backwards as a team. - Yeah, I went through it. I'm not gonna take you through every player again. - But who do you have that you can trade that you're gonna get something back? Where you go, wow, that was a smart deal. Happens in no trade clause. PCA, you're not giving him up because he's not gonna bring anything in return. He's a young kid. Sayah, he has a no trade clause and he ain't bringing that much back. Why would I trade 25-year-old Chris Morrell leads the team in home runs, even though he's hitting 2-0-4? He's 25 today, I think, is his birthday. - Yeah. - Happy birthday, Chris. Dansby, there isn't a blind man that would take that contract. Nico, he's not bringing you much back. He's okay. - So, I understand. - Bellinger, but stop. - If you hit full sail mode, would you trade him an Aga? 'Cause that's it. - If I hit, but I'm not in full, that's-- - I'm saying you're doing it today. I'm saying if in a month, like you painted a picture earlier, they could lose six of the next seven games. They lose six of the next seven games. Sorry, season's kind of over. Your most moveable asset is Shoda. The face of the team. - No, your most moveable asset is some of the pieces in your system, which some people believe are really good. Well, you were talking about playing the kids. You'll be playing the kids then. You will play the kids to the point where you'll be a non-playoff team. - Yeah, you can't do that. - Just saying. - You can't do that. - No, this is what you were telling me. That Craig Council says he wants to play young players. All right, let's see it. 'Cause the guys that's on your roster now, not getting the job done. - Well, you didn't want to play all young. He wanted to play morale, which he's doing. - I think he sent me some of the minor league talent as well. That means like PCA. - He wants to play him. - He should play every day. - But I mean, again, you got no trade clauses in right field and in left field, and neither one's a star. - Signed by? - What are you doing handing out no trade clauses like Santa Claus hands-out presents? I mean, really? - Let me just tell you. Sometimes you have to make the tough choice if your Tom Ricketts. There is a connection there. With Jed because of the World Series Championship. But at some point you have to cut the cord. It's kind of like Madden at the end, right? Madden was there. He was the manager of the World Series Championship team. But at some point it was time to cut the cord. Same thing with Jed. If this team continues to underachieve, especially for the money that's doled out and you can't win your scuffling in back-to-back years, Tom has to make the difficult choice. And that is to move on. - Yeah, I am. - And then you're moving Carter up. No shot. No shot. Why am I moving him up? What has he done? - Carter on the trade deadline. - Offensive bullpen are the two areas that we need to be better at for sure. I mean, we can get better everywhere and we're constantly trying to get better everywhere. But if you look at it objectively, like those are the two spots, that clearly we can raise the floor on. Bullpin is one where given the fact that you got eight guys in the bullpen, you can constantly be finding a way to upgrade there. So it's not just trade, it's waivers. It's anything you can possibly do to find a player that can help you out and kind of catch lightning in the bottle there. So we'll be focused there. And then offense, you know, certainly we got, you know, some guys that are here and they're going to have to be part of the answer, you know, up the middle. And, you know, guys like, say it's a zucchini and a half, you know, those are guys that are here and they're going to be on our club this year. And so we're excited that they are and to the extent that they execute and play up to their potential, we're going to be in a good spot. You know, outside of that we'll be creative and try to think about ways we can upgrade, you know, both offensively and defensively. We've been really excited about how Michael Bush has played. I think Chris Morrell is going to start really hits, swinging the bat a little bit better over the course this evening. We got to figure out how to continue to help his defense at third. But yeah, I mean, it's just, it's going to be a creative deadline, I think, for all, all 30 teams. And, you know, that's going to be pretty fun. And then hopefully end up with some really good deals for us. Sounds like a general manager to me. Listen to the answer, solid. Carter, Carter Hawkins. Yeah, no. Look, I'm not advocating anything about Jett. I like Jett. He's got to be better and he would tell you that. If Jett was to hear with us and he's done the show this many times, we have to be better and it starts with him. He let his team down two years in a row with a crap bullpen. And that's on those guys. So if he's not here, not promoting Carter Hawkins. Carter Reversally, he's the same guy. You sure? Yeah. What do they do? Damn. The next great sports rivalry, well, yesterday was interesting. We'll talk about it next on cap and J-hood. You cap and J-hood are back. We are back, baby. We are back. We are back. On Chicago's home for sports, ESPN Chicago. Captain J-hood on ESPN 1000. And streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with you till 10 o'clock that Mike Greenberg comes in at 10. Carmen Yurko, 12 to 3. Jessie and Sylvia, 2.30, 6.30 into White Sox baseball. They take on the Dodgers, the 6.30 pregame right here on the home. All of the Chicago White Sox, ESPN 1000. So yesterday cap was very interesting. Anytime that you get the Indiana fever and the Chicago sky together, you know what that means? I mean, it's Caitlin Clark on one side and Angel Reese on the other side. And I know that for some people, this is deeper than just basketball. I look at it as a competition, Caitlin Clark, as you well know, and many know that she has really been the linchpin to really get the WNBA on fire. There's no doubt. It started for her days in college in Iowa and has come over to the WNBA to the point where she's the reason why and her games that she's in as the reason why the TV ratings are up for the WNBA. People are interested in her and her story and how she's able to get here. On the other side, another couple of rookies, Cardoso and Angel Reese for the Chicago sky, two top 10 picks also are very compelling because of where Angel Reese came from in particular, from LSU, polarizing LSU for some people, polarizing because of the head coach. And that ship on her shoulder, Angel Reese, comes from her head coach in her days at LSU. It's some look at the Chicago sky or the ladies with the black hats. And I got no problem with that. If they are the bad girls in the WNBA, that's fine. I like their aggressiveness. I like what they were able to do. And yesterday, finally, the sky would be able to get their comeuppance on the Indiana fever. And the sky won, sold out almost $450 per ticket at Wind Trust to see it. It was super cool to see the passion being displayed for the Chicago sky. And I think that's great. I think it's an awesome, awesome rivalry. I thought both ladies accorded themselves very well. But I liked the best was there was none of the BS of this one cheap shot at me and that one this, no, they just, both are really, really good players. And this is, this is what it's like when you get on a big stage and this is what it should have always been. So when Angel Reese is coming in and that, you know, whatever that outfit is called, I don't know what the correct term is. Yeah. So it's like an NBA star showing up in, or Cam Newton showing up, you know, dressed to the nines. Yeah. Whoa, I can't believe he or her wore what they wore. Guess what? It's a show, man. That's what it is. It's entertainment. And Angel Reese went out and played her ass off 18 rebounds, 16 rebounds, 20 plus points. Caitlin Clark was outstanding. And the sky came from 12 down. It was 80 to 68 and they win it by one. It was a hell of a game. It was. I enjoyed it. And I'm glad. And the other thing too, Cap, the stars flew in for it. For stars, there was Jason Sudeikis is on the front row. Chance the rappers there. Yes. Like all these people that came in to be able to see because the people are attracted to this rivalry. It's not like the basketball is great this season for the sky. And now six to nine and Indiana is seven and 11. The point is it's about the star power on the floor. Angel Reese is a monster, a monster on the glass. We knew this coming in, Cap. We talked about Cardoso and Reese. Who else is going to get rebounds on the team because those two are monsters. And she was. And she was too. Angel Reese talked about that comeback, 88, 87 victory for the sky. I'm a dog. You can't teach that. I'm a go on to do whatever I take to win and every single night. My teammates rely on my energy. So being able to continue the energy, giving them for down, giving them for up, that's what I do. Yeah. And a full crowd, many of them rooting for the sky. There's Caitlin Clark fans and fever fans there as well because of the short trip, you know, from Indianapolis coming over. And then other people just paying through the nose. Think about this gap. It's the highest ticket price in the history of the WNBA 450 ticket. Holy smokes. Super cool. Super cool. So he's video yesterday morning, piling in the Toyota where he said that they were going to the Thunder game. They were doing something else and going to eat pizza at peace. I've never had that, but I hear it's great. And I'm like, that's a cool, I thought that was super cool that he chose to take his wife and his two kids to a sky game. Sure. And it was super, super cool. I was reading an article about the Thunder. I think I said the Thunder game, the sky game, I thought that was super cool. And then to see the passionate fans and the place packed and all of it, it was super, super cool, loved it. I guess the only reason why, no matter how you watch it, do you watch it because you're rooting for Caitlin Clark? Are you rooting it because you are Chicago's sky fan? The point is is that it's a talking point now. And you know what we just did, Cap? We talked about the game and the atmosphere. Do you know how many people can't talk about women's sports? The way they talk about men's sports, it's still, it was just talking about the competition. Right. I mean, Caitlin Clark is growing as a player. She had 17 points and 13 assists. She was responsible for 30 points yesterday. They don't talk about the assist as much, right? 13 assists means that you're responsible for being able to help others score. She was responsible for the 30 of the 87 points. More than that because the, do you say, how many assists? 13. 13. So that's a minimum. Let's assume that none of them were three pointers. That's 26. That's 33 at least. Yeah. And if any of those are threes or three point plays, more, she could have been responsible for close to 40. Yeah. Think about that. She's a hell of a player. She is. And there she is signing autographs after the game. There's Angel Reece standing on the court. You just played the audio on the dog. Yeah. She is. She is a baller man. It was, it's cool. Now I do not want to hear if they get criticized where they don't, well, you can't say that. No, they're pro athletes. Yeah. Men, women should be treated the same. Caitlin Clark after the game. Sure. You can wish it. I'm sure there was an opportunity or two for me to probably attempt another shot there quite at the end. But I trust my teammates, obviously 13 assists, that means my teammates scored off the 13 of my passes. Like, it's a really great number. So I'm going to give them the ball every time to give them an opportunity to score. I believe in them. And obviously, Kelsey had a great game. I thought A.B. was really good. I thought we were really good at ball screen action for three quarters. And then we've kind of just struggled to even get to it. And obviously, but it wasn't our offense. Our offense was never the problem. We scored 87 points and we really didn't execute the entire fourth quarter. We just out. We had to stop fouling. She took two shots in the final seven minutes of the game. Somehow, the ball's got to get in her hand. She's out there for 40 minutes, Kat. It's one thing to distribute, but she can score at will. That's a problem. So like we talked about anything else, I'm putting the head coach for the fever on Shea Norlin's hot seat. Fire to the sun. If they can't get any better than this, she's got to get the ball in her hands, man. By the way, that's why a lot of people tuned in. They want to see what she does with the ball in her hands, right? I just think it's a great rivalry. I think that's good for the WNBA. Hey, there's no NBA going on right now. It's the off season, which is as entertaining as the finals or the playoffs, that's for sure what's happening in the off season. Kitty Atkinson, by the way, just get hired by the Cleveland Cavaliers, he's a new head coach. Correct. And by the way, I have a homework assignment tonight. Remember how Shea would evaluate players for the NFL draft? Yeah. I am going to put my scouting hat back on. I'm going to break down the Josh Giddy acquisition because I'm in the minority. I like the acquisition more than most. No, I am. But the point is, is that I'm going to have that done for tomorrow. I truly, how much taper are you going to grind them one night? A lot. I'm going to sell at him. I will let him do that. Go ahead. I'm going to watch a lot. I've given my opinion the last couple of days of that last year. That's fine. I know your opinion yet, and I won't chop it up tomorrow about it. But I think he's got a chance to be a really good player. I do. He's a talented cat, man. Okay. And you got, what, a 22-year-old for a 30-year-old? You're not witty with a 30-year-old who you have to give an $80 million extension to. You're not winning with a 21 or 22-year-old either. Listen, I think the hope is just that he avoids the distractions. Yeah. I think that's what we're all hoping for here. There's crossed. I'll knock on wood. Hopefully. Research. Research that too, by the way. Put that in the analysis as well. Boy, Josh Kitty was really good on the AAU circuit. For more, Google Josh Kitty, 14 years old. Wow. Such a bad guy. Yeah. And by the way, he never even got charged with any of that. I know. I'm kidding. So the rescue. There he is. Barrister-capplet. But we'll see. Yeah. I'm excited to see what they do because the draft is Wednesday, Thursday. Wednesday, Thursday. It used to be before we became partners, I would see hoodie every draft night at the Advocate Center. And we both get to interview Pax. And then we'd say, oh, we traded for Zach Levine, Lowery Markin, and went in the deal, or we drafted him and they sent Jimmy out. Ever that night? I do. There was a whole bunch of these. I'm excited to see what happens by Wednesday. Because if you're willing to trade Caruso, then you're willing to trade just about anybody. Are you going to re-sign to Marta Rosen? I would not. I would try and do a sign-in trade. He's going to be 34 years old. What are we doing here? It's a good player. You're telling me you can't-- you're getting younger. Let's go. We should tell the audience how to like him. We should tell the audience how that went, by the way, when it came to the draft night. I made hoodie wait till like 11 o'clock to get packed. I was in bed already. I got the interview at like six. Yes. Yes, we're going to be making some moves here and blah, blah, blah. Hey, hoodie, I'll see you, bud. Have a good night. And literally, I'd listen to the draft on the way home. Your coverage. Yes. Both rounds. Both rounds were done. He's still been at this. Late to the night. Damn. All right, finally. All right. I'll do this, Pat. I'll do this hood thing. Last. Last. On purpose. He'd do Telemundo before he got to me. Wow. Cat. You first, all the local tech channels, score, meet. Right. I always got the first interview. It was the best. Meet last. Yeah. Why? Because it's me sitting there. All right. What do you have? Okay. John Paxton joins us 1135. Yeah, brother. And of course, you know, when it was done, I was locking up the advocate center because everyone was gone. Exactly. I would take the key. Can I get somebody to walk me into my car and say one or the more? Brother. This gets so pissed off and just drown my sorrows and beer and all of all afterwards. Still open that time of night, by the way. Still open. 1 AM. Yeah. Yeah. No question about it. 3 1 2 3 3 2 ESPN 3 3 2 3 7 7 6 is our telephone number. Still to come. We'll talk about Ryan Sandberg. What a day for Ryan Sandberg as we go to Dave and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hey, Dave. Good morning. Good morning, fellows. How's it going? What's up, Sparky? I just figured. Hey, Cupcake, don't eviscerate me for this take. I just, I was listening in my car. I did try to watch. I watched some of the game yesterday. I've been trying to get into the WNBA more, but you know, I've seen some of the comments that Angel Reese has made about, you know, this league isn't about Caitlin Clark. I'm just as important. You know, I bring star power, which she does, but I thought it was just funny. You guys played the two perfect outtakes after the game yesterday. This is more of a message to Angel Reese, but what makes her, in my opinion, not all that likable is, listen to the soundbite. It's about her and she's a dog and her team relies on her. And it's about her that you listen to Caitlin Clark take, she didn't even mention her. She mentioned all her teammates. She went through and said, well, I had a lot of assistance means, you know, I'm really trusting my teammates. All I'm saying is even go back to like the Jordan days. I grew up there, like we all idolized him. Jordan then come on after a game and say, oh, me, I'm the greatest player ever. It's about me, me, me. He would talk about his team. And again, just a message, James, Reese, you guys can eviscerate me now, but that's my take right now. Why she's just not that likable in my opinion. I don't, I don't, well, I can understand. I can see your point of view on that, Dave. I think that's clear, but I also want to give context to what you're, what you're saying is me, me, me. Do you know the context of the question? Uh, no, I don't because I, I only heard is what you guys play. The context of the question is, how did you lead the comeback? Cause she's the reason why that the sky won the game. That's what was asked. Like how, how did you do that? And she said, I'm a dog. That's why. And ultimately, do you see how I see my points that she scored? She's the reason why that they dug out of a 17 point deficit. It was her. That, that was the reason why she said that. No, that's, that's fair. I, I want. You guys have seen them too. I've seen quite a few other interviews where I feel like it's, it's me, centric versus team centric. Um, but yeah, no, that's fair. That's a fair point. I got you on that. I didn't hear that part of it. If you played it or, you know, it was just cut out before that, that started playing. But you could, but you could feel how you want to feel about Angel Reese. Here's the thing. As I just said before, every athlete is not on the playing surface for you to like and Kevin, I've discussed this a lot. We grew up watching the, the Oakland Raiders and they wanted to be hated. There are so many athletes that we watched and says, you know what? It is about me and the team, but I'm going to lead it and I'm going to have the black cat and you can boo me in every road city that we go to. I don't care. It just fuels me. That's where Angel Reese got it from. It started with college that coach that she worked with. Everything was about us against the world. That's where that mentality came from her background aside. I'm talking about her basketball and how she is blue collar in that regard and saying, Hey, you know what? Put it on my shoulders, the blame and the credit. Put it on my shoulders. Whether you like that or not, it's in all the sports. Fair enough. Is it not? Look, if she's willing to wear the black hat, so to speak, and play at the level she played yesterday, like that can't be a one off. You give me that type of productivity and you're willing to be the dog as she put it, walking in a opposing arenas and dealing with all that, I'm good. I'm good. If it becomes a distraction, that's a different story. But right now, eight straight double doubles, she's a good player, man, not a star, but she's a damn good player. So you know, she wasn't likeable in college either, no, someone I know told me she was far more likeable at Maryland before she transferred. What do you think that is, Cap? Because of Kim Mulkey demanding, Hey, you have this ability. We don't play soft here at LSU. We play one way pedal to the frickin' metal all the time. She went from Kim Mulkey to Teresa Weatherspoon. Oh God, right. Also chip on her shoulder. No question. She's a great defensive player, that's why she's in the Hall of Fame. She's also attitudinal and wants them to play as hard as possible. When I was in this tournament up at Redtail in Canada over the Thursday, Friday, Saturday, a bunch, they're mostly all Canadian. They're like, we hate that Kim Mulkey. What does she like? I'm like, I don't know. They all hated her. Hate her. That's crazy. Yeah. How about a celebration of one of the all-time greats in Chicago sports, Ryan Sandberg. Let's do it. And I remember standing, I can tell you where I was left of the screen, on the second, right in front of the reserve grandstand, so like the second concourse walk around. And I set my tray of beer down and one of the people from the concession company said, "Hey, you still got beer left in there?" I said, "Sandberg's batting." Yes, I'll never forget it. And that, he hit the first homerun. So I was there at Dr. Brewer and I the whole time. I was at my aunt Lois's house. It was a hot day. I never forget that. It was really hot to the point where the adults in the room were like, "Hey, kids, you got to come inside. It's way too hot." Okay. The baseball game's on. It's the Cubs and the Cardinals and me and several of my cousins were around the little barely colored TV in the first room with a fan on, box fan, on a hot day. Watching the greatness that is Ryan Sandberg back on June 23, 1984. Here's Harry Carey.
