Here's Charlie Beavitt. What's up, Charlie? Indeed it is. Good morning, boys. Sign up now at the ESPN Bet, New Year's has get $100 in bonus bets with any sports book bet. Good morning, gentlemen. How are we today? Good. We're Shay at the Celtics Parade or something. We'll get to Shay. I have a shot or no shot about him, but that's... I just have...I have like a issue with people that are fans of...I like the Celtics. I like the Lions. I like the Chargers. I mean, you know what? You know me. I rant about soccer teams and... Of course. I'm Chicago all the way. You live in Chicago. You be a fan here. Okay. Shay. I want to hear about the Celtics one more day on this show. Okay. Well, he's not...but he's not from here, though. Whatever. He lives here now. This is his home. Okay. He's rooting for where you live. Okay. You're not allowed to...here's my rules. You're definitely not... Fine. You can root for where you grew up. Okay. You can't root for the Celtics and the Lions. You're not allowed to do that. Okay. Well, what about... He's a Patriots fan. Yes. Even better. He's also a Lions fan, isn't he? No. Well, they're... We're tired. I don't... Depends. Excuse me. That's a fine. Is it really Tigers? Oh, for each of us. Oh, for each of us. Is it really Tigers Celtics? Is that what it is? Yes. Oh, God. You thought about getting on the bandwagon of the Lions, but... But why would you pick the Tigers? That to me is how I know that it's maybe not necessarily just picking and choosing. So I interrupted the segment and just... I don't like that. I understand that. Do you have any cash today? Yeah. Bring cash? Okay. I do. That'll be a dollar to Bernie's book bank. For what? I think... Yeah. Bernie's book bank.org. We got rules around here, man. Sure. They're right in that cup right there. There you go. Thank you very much. Industry professional Jesse Rogers just coughing it to the mic. He can't do that. All right. Don't worry. The cup will still be ready. I'm sure there'll be more fines for you later on today. Oh, they're definitely with me. So... And by the way, what about Charlie? Charlie's from Oregon. Is it okay for him to root for? I guess. Okay. We're all about Scoot Henderson back here. See? It's not great. But Jesse doesn't like that. I have rules of fandom. I've seen rules. I understand. I'm still being Catholic. You do you. No. You do what I tell you. Yeah. Jesse's like, you fan how I want you to fan. That's right. I have rules. Here's Charlie Bevitz. All right, boys. We've been talking about it all morning. But the Bulls made their first big move of the off season. Alice Crusoe for Josh Giddy. It's an obvious step back. And it seems like this was not the most ideal offer that's been out there. But maybe possibly there's some glimmer of a silver lining. Shot or no shot? This at least means the Bulls are starting a rebuild. What? That's a shot. At least I would think so. You're just not going to stand still and just say, well this is the curse removed that we're going to make. We're going to trade the heart and soul of the team. Alex Caruso for Josh Giddy. Is there got to be more than that? Because Carter Shovis said at the end of the season that he was not happy with the roster and that changes would be made. Well, I would think so since we've been in the job, you haven't made an actual move. Since August of 2021, of course there should be a deal that should be made. You're the general manager for God's sakes. You're just sitting there like the Maytag repairman. Not doing anything. Cobwebs on your ass. Not doing anything. Yeah, I'll play devil's advocate and say no shot. I need to see more before I believe it's a rebuild because of what we've talked about. If you start down that rebuild road, you're not going to sell out that United Center. And I'll believe it when I see it. That Jerry is willing or Michael is willing to accept a bunch of young players that can't win, don't have a shot at the play in. I need to see at least one more move where he goes young. So I'm going to say no shot. The most exciting part of basketball is either the playoffs or the off season. And then the regular season is the third. That's a good point. It's true. That is actually a great point. The drama that happens in the off season. This is just like, this is a nice little curse removed. I mean, a podcaster just took over the Lakers head coaching job. That's exactly what just happened. I mean, he's really the assisting head coach, but good luck to JJ. It's going to be interesting. It's just one move. It surprised people because people didn't think the Bulls would make a move in NBA circles, but it's happened. All right, Charlie. All right. Let's go actually based off what Jesse just said. We will get a little deeper into JJ radical a little bit later. But I am curious shot or no shot. The Lakers right now are a bigger debacle than the Bulls. Bigger debacle. No shot. Not bigger. Bigger. But as big. Here's one thing about the Lakers. You got to know Jesse. All the Glitters is not gold. Right. It's a brand name. They're like the Cowboys, the Lakers, like a brand name. We think Lakers, what do you think about all the stars in the front row and all the championships, the Magic Johnson, the Showtime Lakers, all that, but they are not run well. They are not run well. And this is a shot at Jeannie Bus. This is a shot at Rob Palinka because you're letting a 40 year old control your whole operation. I mean, that's what's happening here. Yeah. And that 40 year old is going to be gone here in two years or less. So then what are the Lakers without LeBron? Wait till they draft Bronny. What are the Lakers with Bronny? Not much. Yeah. I was going to say shot is, I was going to say no shot. They're not as big a debacle, but the fall will be huge. When it happens, when they're on the other side of LeBron and Anthony Davis, that fall is going to be huge. But they're not as big a debacle as the Bulls. Nobody is. Our brothers over at ESPN Los Angeles, our brothers and sisters in ESPN LA that the Lakers are the number one topic and they were all over it yesterday talking about it. But here's the thing, they're always excited about the Lakers. The next head coach, that's the greatest thing. The next acquisition is the greatest thing. It's not. JJ Redick will be back doing TV in two years or less. He will. Yeah. What they finished in the West, what seed were they, six, seven, right? Yeah. Something like that. Yeah. I believe they missed the playoffs. I could be wrong about that. So they made the, didn't they play, get knocked in the first round? Lakers were seven. Yeah. Seventh. Yeah. Come on. Well, either way, I mean, they signed JJ to a four year deal. LeBron's not going to be there in four years. So you, you basically sign him to, there's no way LeBron didn't have a lot of the experts in the last 24 hours of insane. This isn't about JJ Redick. This is about Pelinka and the roster. They're not going to be better than seventh unless he does something to that roster. So we'll see, but they're not as big a debacle as the Bulls. I know it was the blink of an eye, Charlie, but they, they lost four out of five to the nuggets. Yeah. Tell them what the Lakers. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That AD, Yokech thing usually goes in Yokech's favor. It seems. Yeah. All right, boys. Casey Johnson had a very newsy column yesterday in NBC sports Chicago. This is even before the giddy trade book broke and probably the biggest nugget there was the revelation that Zach Levine has been floated in 15 different trade scenarios. Not her new shot. Zach Levine is as good as gone shot shot. Yeah. I mean, it's, it's amazing. I know, you know, it's been, well, at least a year, but like the moment they signed them, I feel like they've been trying to trade them since the moment they signed them, they realize this is not working. So yes, shot that that he's as good as gone. If someone will take them, I mean, you got to get something for them, but it's mostly a salary dump shot that that is a shot, Charlie. And the reason why it's a shot is because, look, nobody told the bulls that you had to lock in Zach Levine unless it was bull's management, because if you didn't sign Zach Levine, that would have been closer to a rebuild, right? And that's so they didn't want to do it at the time. They wanted to go with the core of de Rosen and Levine and Vousavitch and then see what happens. And again, Jesse, it's very obvious and it's a difference between your sport and the NBA. The NBA, you have to have some kind of core where you have to say these are these three guys are going to be the difference maker to me for me to get to the championship. And baseball, we saw from the Arizona Diamondbacks, it wasn't random, but it was, here's our plan. We're going to have a good enough pitching to get there and just have just enough hitting and be able to get it done. We're not going to have, you know, fireworks in the sky and have a trillion dollar payroll to get there. The Diamondbacks were able to do it just with the stars that they had and the NBA, it is about star power. Absolutely. 100%. The last four bottom seeds of the National League have made the world series. The last four full years, you can't get that in the NBA, you know, once in a while you get it, but not, not, not often enough and certainly won't be the Bulls. Charlie Bevin. All right. Obviously I'm here for Shay Norling, but the reason Shay is off today, Jesse, you were curious about this. It was so he could play the Elden Ring DLC all night. Elden Ring is, it's a video game, basically. Shot or no shot? Shay is too old to be taking off work for a video game. If you are working at all, you're too old. Shot. I mean, that's, that's the easiest shot of all. I, wait a minute. You, let's, let's put, I got to take my first time out of the half. What is he doing? He wanted to play Elden Ring all night. What is Elden Ring? Sounds like Lord of the Rings or something. It's, yeah, it's, it's a, it's a PC game. Did he use the vacation day to do that? You got him? You use him, right? Jay Hood. What, what am I going to do? I mean, it's, is that the, is that the sign that you and I need to move on to the farm or something? It's two Americas. Oh my God. I mean, it's just like, I don't remember, you and I never took a day off back in our day to play Pac-Man at the arcade. Oh my God. Did we? No. Did we, did we do that? You know how you should take a day off with Judd Sarat once a year? We take our bicycles, we'd ride along the lake and we'd jump in and have a day of it. Yes. Because we couldn't find dates, but at least we did something. We weren't inside with the little video games. Come on. At least you jumped into something. Yes. At that time. Yes. Yes. We did that once a year. We would ride the lake and jump into it. Elden Ring is a little bit easier to get lost and then Pac-Man for eight hours of a day. My point is, is that if that's the reason why he's all, I mean, God bless them. It's fine. I'm off today. Um, but, but the point is like for a video game, I don't know. Uh, Jaymore, were you aware of this until now? I did not know this. No. Holy smokes. Actually, Charlie told me earlier and I was like, okay, I mean, you know, it's this day. You do what you want. I know, but it's just like all night into the day with this. When's the last time you played Pac-Man? Oh God. Uh, you know what, the holiday party, did you remember that? Couple years ago. Couple years ago. You lost from Riggly? You want, you want to know the last time I, you want the last time I played 18 hours ago. So we moved recently, listen to this, we moved recently, no internet, no TV. You want to test your marriage? Go a week without the internet and without TV, which is what it's, we've had troubles getting in our new place. Yeah. So for a week, we have not had internet TV, but what we do have is an old school game council that has 60 games in it, Galaga and all the old school games. Galaga. Yes. Is it not Galaga? Galaga. Galaga. Galaga. So what? Now we've had, we've had this for years and the kids have played it, but yesterday, because we were so bored at home, no TV, no internet. My wife and I turned it on and we played Pac-Man. We played Pac-Man yesterday at home. That's crazy. It's worked the next day for it. I did not know that that was the reason. We started at five in the afternoon. We ended at five fifteen. We didn't play all night missed work. What's your favorite 80s video game? Light them up. Galaga. 312. 332. 3776. Were you a Pac-Man person? Asteroids. Were you a Donkey Kong? Tetris. Were you a Frogger? So this video game council has 60. Every game you just mentioned, it has it. It has it. Were you a pitfall person? A dragon quest, if you will? The big thing right now are arcade bars. Yes. Those are fun. Classic. You get lost in a game of Frogger at those. I have that. We have Frogger. We have Asteroids, Tetris, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong 2, Miss Pac-Man, Pac-Man units, all at 60 games in this one council. Dig Dug. Dig Dug is on. Yes. You name it. It's on there. I remember. Those are Burger Time. Remember Burger Time? Yes. Have that as well. ESPN 1000. Hi. Hello. Galaga. Galaga. Hi. Galaga. Are you kidding me? What's your name? Whoever in their mark. Hey Mark. I just call them to give the pressure balls a little bit. Galaga. Galaga. They're in their right mind. Have ever called that game Galaga? I always do. Get lit up on Twitch, Jesse. I'm just kidding around. It's Galaga. No, I mean. He's quizzed one more, Charlie. Yeah. Let's do one more. In previewing the MLB trade deadline, the athletic wrote that Luis Robert comes with concerns for other MLB teams. I'm not sure if you've heard something similar, Jesse, but some of his concerns are his availability and he just really hasn't gotten back to that 2020 form quite yet. They also wrote that Chris gets is likely to overvalue Robert since he is the White Sox best player shot or no shot. Reality does not match perception within the White Sox organization about Luis Robert. No, I mean, no shot. No shot. He's just setting the bar as if he's healthy and talented and looking at the big picture for teams, you have him for more than half a season. No, Chris gets knows what he's selling, but other teams are going to look at the availability factor. That's going to be the disconnect. We can't give you full value for him because he gets injured. So we're going to give you 75 cents on the dollar to give us a little protection if he gets hurt, but gets understands that you expect him to be gone by the deadline, right? This is such a difficult call because of what I'm saying here. He's going to be a disconnect in terms of the trade value. I don't know. Put a percent on it. I'm going to say, I'm going to say it's less than 60 less than 60. I'm going to say it's just under 50 percent. The fly ball with him just dropping it yesterday. Just checked out. Come on, brother. You're better than that. He's just checked out. I'm going to say less than 50 percent. What does the scouts say? That was in the scout seats yesterday watching that fly ball. What is it? I mean, she looks checked out on this team. Yeah, I guess. I mean, it's fluke-ish, not like it happens often to him. Suzuki's dropped a few of those. Yes. Availability is the tough part of this trade value release, Robert. And many times you're testing the waters now for an off-season trade just like they did with Dylan Sees. They tested the waters a year ago and then made the deal. I don't think he's going to trade him in July, but I could be wrong. Yeah. The Sox still need just a few more pieces and they'll be right there in the mix because the starting rotations intact. We're ready to go. All those kids they had out there and all those quality starts. Jonathan Cannon, man. Yeah. Jonathan Cannon. It's a guy. It's a dude. True Thorpe. Jonathan Cannon, Garrett Crochet. That betty. That betty. Pet soul man in October next year. That's that. Remote from Detroit in the wildcard round. Could we trade Fettie and then sign him back in the off-season? The Fettie. I like the whole trade and then sign him back. People love that. Oh, especially when you're grasping at straws and don't know who you're starting your number one guy is. The Yankees did it once and now everybody thinks it's going to happen all the time. That's the worst. Cubs did it with Jason Hamill. They did do it with Jason Hamill when you're right about that. We go around the NFL. We'll hear from Darnell Mayberry, by the way, from the athletic and get his thoughts about the Bulls making this deal in which Josh Giddy comes to the Bulls and Alex Gruso to Oklahoma City. Darnell coming up at 835, but around the NFL's next, Jonathan Jesley on Captain Jay Hood. Welcome back to Captain Jay Hood. You're officially locked in on Chicago's home for sports ESPN. Chicago. He sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football evaluator. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is from. But there he goes. This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winning. He starts the comedy. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's the answer you're looking for on these things here? It's time to go around the NFL, right here on Captain Jay Hood. Jesse's in for cap. Here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app, I'd remind you we will have the Friday folder coming away at 935, stuff we couldn't get to, and definitely the wheel of topics. We have Lenny for Jesse. You know, Jesse would usually be on at 830, but as a guest, but since he's co-hosting, we still have baseball stuff for him that's coming up in 918 looking forward to it around the NFL. Here's Charlie Bevins. All right, let's start with one quick news item. Patriots extend running back. Ramon, Dre, Stevenson, the only reason I think that's is significant is I think we're past the days of very dramatic running back holdouts. Remember like the Levion Bell one? I remember the Jonathan Taylor one. These guys, they're maybe not getting paid, paid the way at least percentage of cap or the way they used to, but the running back market has sort of seemed to settle in its own place. And now these guys are at least getting to second contract without having to go to free agency. So you think about the running back position, Charlie, four years, 36 million. I think that that is a 17 million guaranteed. That's the key number is 17 million guaranteed. This is where we are with the running back situation, Jesse, where you used to pay through the nose for them, football was about running the football and defense and having a quarterback that's good enough to be able to get the ball to the running back. Yeah. And now the running back is almost not expendable, but it's one that you don't pay a lot for anymore. And that's, that's a good number for Stevenson. So here's a really naive question because I haven't followed this storyline as much. I know that the running back position kind of bottomed out in terms of what you're talking about, Charlie, like in J.hood, the salaries. Yeah. But running backs and the union, I think, made a stink about this, right? I mean, guys held out, whatever. So it has, have they benefited from, from it, Charlie, is this a, is this deal, the result of all the. Yeah. So like Nick Chubb got, got his deal, Jonathan Taylor got his deal, like, again, these guys are getting paid. It's just not what it was 15 years ago, but at least they're getting second contracts. Yeah. They're entering. They're entering. I think the, the last year of their contracts was much more security because they know they have that second deal coming instead of, all right, now we got to play the franchise tag game. Now we got to hold out. Now we got to do this and that. Kind of shout out to pay their Patriots because as they try to rebuild this thing post Belichick, they're resigning their own guys, they got their tight end Henry, they got born the wide receiver. Again, these are decent deals for them. So they're resigning and retaining their own talent this offseason kind of not a retooling, kind of rebuild, but kind of a retool, would you say, Charlie, that's where they're going with the Patriots. Yeah. Well, the, the rebuild probably started probably last year really because you think of all the guys on offense that they just didn't have. I mean, they've never had, that's the thing. They never had top tier skill players. That was just, you have Tom Brady, you can, you can make your way without it. But you know, the cupboard is bare. That's why I was always a little worried about Drake May, but like, yeah, I think this is like, this is going to be a multi-year project for that. All right. What else do we have? Sports Illustrated listed 10, 10 potential first time pro bowlers heading into this season. Not on this list was a single bear, including DJ Moore, who actually has not made a pro bowl. I would think he'd be near the top of the list of guys who could make a first time pro bowl. Okay. When we take a look at this bears roster, okay, the ones that can make the pro bowl this year. How many on the defensive side of the football first? I think sweat made it last year. That's one anybody for the secondary because that's the strength of the team. What we're talking about first time. Is that the list? Yeah. First time pro bowl. Yeah. Stevenson could Stevenson be in the, I think Stevenson's an interesting one. I think Collard Gordon would be an interesting one. I mean, the only thing with DJ Moore might be the whole, they all split the, you know, numbers. You know what I mean? Offensively. Yeah. The wide receivers all, you know, our 800 yard guys or something like that. Do you have the short list of those that, and what about Caleb? No chance? What about him? No chance at the pro bowl. I mean, I, but that they had to be extra special for that to happen. How many record backs make it? Not many. I don't know, Carm. Well, I mean, it's so weird because so many of these guys end up sitting out. And so, I mean, like Travis, he made one in 2018 when he was not even the third best quarterback in his division. Right. That's a little different. Like chosen, though, not, not selected fifth because four guys sat out. You know what I mean? Mm hmm. But yeah, like, like Montes what was there, Jalen Johnson was there. So they have guys who have made it, but like, I think you can put Jaquan Brisker, like they have a lot of guys in that secondary who, if they had said it this year and, you know, it's very likely the Bears are the story of this season. And that could be for defense. That could be for hopefully it's for offense, but you would think that if they're, if they're that kind of force as far as NFL conversation goes with all those eyeballs and because it is fan voting so much of it is fan voting, they'll have more guys getting there. And like Keenan Allen's made a Pro Bowl before he's the type of guy to me who would not want to go because he's just been there before he's been around for so long. DJ more if it's his first time, he's probably going. Hmm, I would say that, again, who knows with Caleb Williams because there's so much talent on the surface on the offensive side because you still got to give Roma Dunes a his and he got to get Keenan Allen his and you got to get DeAndre Swift his right in the football. Is it impossible for one of the offensive linemen? That could be. Well, hopefully that's Kevin Jenkins to help you, Kevin Jenkins, you know, don't forget the tight ends and cold command. The guy in the right. What about the right tech? Darnell, right. Yeah, Darnell, right. We will see. And someone's going to make the Pro Bowl for the first time or this bear seems not going to be as good as we thought. There are several choices, but I think that might be heavy on the defensive side of the football. Maybe. So we'll see. Charlie. All right. Kelly Stafford, the wife of Matthew Stafford was on a podcast and she made a very interesting revelation about her time at Georgia. Wait, so was he trying to casually date and you were all in? Oh, yeah, girl. Anyways, long story short, it wasn't that cute of a relationship at first. I hated him. I loved him. I dated the backup to piss him off. Oh, yes. He was like, that'll do it. He was the bad boy too. Like Matthew is so sweet and Southern gentlemen and all that. And the backup was the complete opposite. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, and it upset him. So they lived in the same dorm because athletes lived in the same dorm and he would see my car there. And so at one point, he waited and followed me out and gotten my car and wouldn't get out. And he was like, this is so hot, I was like, this is not working. Yeah. I was getting out of my car and he was like, I don't, he's not right for you. And I was like, who do you want, you can't tell me that. From the off the vine podcast, I almost want to put this in like deal breakers or something. This is like, this is such a bizarre story. And this is not the first time like Matthew Stafford's personal life has ended up in the crosshairs of social media discourse. It's not that big of a deal, Charlie. I mean, it's just college. What was this a big deal? It's just telling a funny, stupid story. What ends? All ends, you know, it ended well. I just wouldn't want my laundry airing out like that. I mean, it's the back, the beginning of the relationship 10 years ago or whatever it is. I think it's nothing, it's a, it's a nothing burger. It's a nothing burger to you, but what if it happens to one Jesse Rogers? Jesse believes in love. I, I, it's, it's the retelling of the beginning of their relationship, got the relationship ended poorly. That would not be as acute a story. I don't know. It's not that big deal. The backup, just to make Matthew Stafford jealous, like she's the first person to do that, man or woman, to make the other person jealous. You would like to think that the woman that you're going to be with the rest of your life is a little pure. You had hope. You had hope. You had hope. Yes. You want to think that even though it ain't true. How you know? Did you, did you ask? Yours are mine. You would do. I hope he's asking yours. I think it's, it's a cute story. To be honest, it's nothing more than that. Just interesting. But from Charlie's standpoint, those things have to be kept in house. He doesn't want his dirty laundry out there because now, people are chanting that your wife is, you know, exactly like think about when, when the Rams play, I don't know, like Green Bay or New England or something. They're going to find out this backup quarterback's name. They're going to be chanting that backup quarterback's name. And if they don't, it's a missed opportunity by that. And, and if I'm Matthew Stafford, I applaud it. I mean, this is not life and death, folks. I applaud. That would be a, a creative chant. Uh-huh. Tyson. Pageant. Oh my God. Did we figure out who it is yet? No. He's the backup. Tyson. Pageant. And I'd be like, Tyson. Bravo. She's my wife now. We've got millions. Yeah, but Tyson had her first. You don't want Tyson. Whatever. Get it first. Oh my God. I'm guessing Matthew doesn't care. Oh, that's good. And if he would, if he really cared, she wouldn't have said it. The backup quarterback. All right. That is a classic move. Date the backup to get the starter jealous. Sure. And as I look around the NFL right here on the cap and Jhood coming up, more into the story of Alex Caruso, no longer part of the Chicago Bulls. Caruso goes to the Thunder and the Bulls are getting out, getting Josh Giddy. So what are the Bulls getting in Giddy? And out next on Captain Jhood, welcome back to Captain Jhood on Chicago, so I'm for sports ESPN, Chicago. It's the Captain Jhood morning show on ESPN 1000. We're streaming on the ESPN Chicago. I'm glad you're with us here on this Friday morning. Hope that you have a great weekend. Take news today, headline the Chicago Bulls, a trade, Alex Caruso for Josh Giddy. As Giddy comes over from the Oklahoma City Thunder, and we have an expert to talk to us about what the Bulls are doing. It is Darnell Mayberry from the athletic.com. He's with us on the hotline. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom, don't worry, call the car X name. Darnell, good morning. How are you? Good morning. Never better. How are you all? Good, man. New YorkTimes.com/athletic. Click the Bulls, and you can read from Darnell Mayberry his thoughts about the Bulls and Darnell, we want to get your initial reaction to the deal. What was your initial reaction finding out that Josh Giddy is a bull? Chuck, I was surprised not only that they traded out of Caruso when they did, but also that they traded him for Josh Giddy, of all players, with everything surrounding him last season. Also, the fact that he's a flawed player, but he has obvious areas to work on. That surprised me for a team that has stayed at time and time again, that they're in win now mode. They traded their best player, their most, the best two-way player, I should say, and they're probably the player that most impacts winning, so that surprised me a lot. Remember it's a player, though, that a few years ago, you probably couldn't get as much value for Caruso as you did today. He really has come into his own as a two-way player, so kudos to him to put himself in a position to be traded. You mentioned getting, like, 21 years old. Who is a finished product, unless you're just, you know, Kobe Bryant or something. So, like, I don't have a problem with any of his deficiencies as long as there's a feeling that he can get better and do you think he can under Billy Donovan in this sport, Bull's organization? Yeah, I definitely think he's going to get better, but at the same time, his deficiencies are so pronounced, I mean, and they are so meaningful. You have to be able to shoot in this league today, and he's not a great three-point shooter. I think he's at, like, 32% for his career or something like that. He showed great improvement toward the end of last season, in the last 22 games of the regular season, and the first round, everyone focuses on him getting moved to a reserve role in the last two games against Dallas in the conference in my finals, but he shot 50% from three-point range in the first round against the Pelicans, and, you know, he was great in the last 22 regular season games, so he's showing the ability to knock down shots, but then he also struggles at the Frito line, so then you're thinking, "Can we have him in games late?" and then defensively, so those are the deficiencies that you're saying, you know, is this a player who we can trust and trust in big moments, and they're both in? Darnell, we heard from Arturis Carne-Shovis after the season saying that he was out happy with the roster, that change would be made on this team, and so this is the first shoot to drop with Caruso. What's the likelihood that the Bulls do more as far as changing this roster by the time we get to the regular season? Yeah, I think it's inevitable now, Jonathan, because they just gave away one of their best assets, if not their best asset, given that he was under a contract that was only right at $10 million in the last season, so they gave up an expiring contract in Alex Caruso. They do get back a young promising player, but no draft capital, and the fact that they did that makes me think that, you know, they're trying to retool, and we've seen this before, that it didn't, you know, work out that well before trying to retool, and my concern, and I wrote this today at the Athletic, my concern is that they're trying to replicate what Lonzo Ball brought instead of pivoting and going in a different direction. I mean, I don't think it's a smart idea to try to replicate what that 2021/22 Bulls team was all about, and refined the Marta Rosen and running back with Giddy sort of trying to replicate Lonzo Ball, almost reeks of that direction, and I just hope that it's not. Do you agree with the report, and from your sources, that the Bulls could have made this deal at the deadline for Caruso? Yeah, but, you know, you just never know how much pressure there was from ownership to make the playoffs, that that was a goal for this team for the last three seasons. They made it one time, the play in the last two seasons, and so it was clear that the team really wanted to try to get them to the playoffs, and build this culture here with this current group, but it was a very short-sighted move, even if they made the playoffs, I think everyone knew they had no shot against, likely, who was at Boston as a number one seed. So, you know, that was just unfortunate to see the front-office be short-sighted and not get extreme value or the best value that they could when they could. Yeah, you wonder, I've mentioned this earlier, Michael Wilbound was on yesterday, and he mentioned this like, let's say there's a similar deal at the deadline. Do they get Giddy and a first-round pick for Caruso, or would that have been too much? Like, what more could they have gotten when a team is in need of someone as they head to the playoffs, you know? Yeah, I just look at this Oklahoma, the same trade with Oklahoma City. I mean, if you're the Thunder, and you know that you're the top seed, or you have a chance to be the top seed in the West, even at the deadline last season, and you're trying to bolster your roster to make a deep playoff run, if you're the Bulls, how can you not get one of the army of draft picks that the Thunder has in that situation? And, you know, from what I understand, they were trying to make the playoffs here in Chicago, when you have a team that is a championship caliber team and a player in Caruso who can help a team win a championship, to me, that gives you all the leverage and that you have all the negotiating power, and it looks like the Bulls didn't use it appropriately. Darnell, I know you still have your ear to the ground with Oklahoma City because you were there for many years. So, what does this do for Caruso? I think that Bulls fans need to hear exactly what Caruso could do for Oklahoma City, with George, with Janet Williams, with the SGA, how strong, how much stronger defensively are the Thunder now that Caruso's there? And the guy you didn't mention is shed home, Graham, cleaning up everything in the inside. So, you know, you got Caruso and all those perimeter guys, Jason Wallace is another one who impressed me last season, young fellow. So, they've got a lot of weapons offensively and defensively. I look at the Thunder as a conference champion or conference finalist at minimum if they stay healthy, and I do think that they'll probably have a really, really good chance of making the NBA Finals, not if they've acquired Alex Caruso. He's going to do everything that they want to Giddy to do. He's going to come out via Playmaker. He's going to be a nice defender, a much better defender than Josh Giddy was for them, and then obviously a better three-point shooter as well. So, what an upgrade for the Thunder, and then when you look at it from that standpoint, that's why so many people wonder why couldn't the Bulls get draft capital, especially from a team like the Thunder that's got an abundance of draft picks. Before we let you go, I got to circle back to what you wrote and said earlier about the Bulls, and trying to, let's just basically say, Giddy replacing Lanzo Ball and running it back, trying to recapture the magic of early in that season before Ball got hurt. It does seem like a very risky plan if that's it, because the other option is, oh, this is a sign of rebuilding. Those are two very different options. Yeah, I mean, you have a lot of different options that you could have taken with trading Alex Caruso, but you go out and get a guy who is not a great shooter and is not a great defender, and the appeal is that he's 21 years old. He'll be 22 at the start of next season. So, he's very young, got a lot of potential. You can sign him and keep him under team control as a restricted free agent next summer, or you can sign him before the season starts next season. So, the Bulls have options, but the fact that they didn't get a more well-rounded player, a more veteran player, draft capital, those are all the things that you would have wanted to see them get for Alex Caruso. And the fact that they got such a similar player in Lanzo Ball minus the defense, but in terms of the playmaking and being able to push the ball, things like that, that prototype feels like the Lanzo Ball player that they've missed for the last two-plus seasons. And that's just, I don't agree with it. And we'll see, I do believe Josh Giddy's potential is there, but it does feel like they're trying to replicate the Lanzo Ball presence. And I just don't agree with that. So, lastly, do you expect to see Lanzo Ball in a Bulls uniform this season playing? This throws a little bit of doubt on it. For me, it just seems to me like, yes, Giddy is a young player. It's sort of a value move. If you weren't going to pay Caruso, you weren't going anywhere with him. But why make this deal if you know Lanzo was coming back and healthy and is going to be himself? And we're getting closer and closer to July. The draft is next week. They've got to make these decisions now. They don't have any more time to wait on Lanzo Ball if they're expecting him to play next season. And the fact that they made this deal out of nowhere almost on the first day of summer, technically, then that was a big shock. And it took, for me, it screams a totally new direction. But if they do run it back, I'm concerned. All right, as always, man, we appreciate your time. Thanks so much for coming on the show. All right, guys. Thank you. Darno Mayberry from The Athletic and the Car X Tire and Auto Hotline. Interesting. JJ Redick is a head coach. Why will this work? Or why will this fail? We'll find out both next on Cap and Jay Hood. We'll check in with the weekend weather with Tracy Butler at 9.50. So an hour from now, we'll hear from Tracy. But it was great to hear from Darno Mayberry. Just a follow-up to that conversation. Yeah, it was interesting. The idea that they're kind of trying to replicate Lonzo's skill set and the possibility that they just sort of run it back with Giddy. But I don't know who's going to play defense. Brother, I don't know. I don't know. I mean, Caruso was that guy. You know, it's kind of like with Ryan polls with the Bears. There's never been a Joe manager or front office person that came to a McCasky and say, I'm going to blow this up. I want you to think about that. There is plenty of until polls. That's how polls are saying. I'm saying that there's never been a general manager or a front office person saying we're going to level the franchise because they always want to just keep the lights on, keep your interest for three wins, four win, five win teams. But my point is that polls did that with the Bears. Does Caruso was have that same temerity to say, hey, we're going to blow this thing up? I mean, he's been in the job all this time and there's been no movement to the point where Garpax were better at their job than Caruso was in ever's league. Seriously. In some ways, I agree with you because I think Garpax, at least in knowing Paxil, but your goal has to be a championship. Your goal can't be to sneak in to a play in no less. It just does it unless you're just trying to keep the lights on, like you say. Keep the lights on. And that seems like a very rhymes Dorfian thing to do. Just keep the fans coming through. We got a near playoff team here. We got a couple of guys that look like stars instead of just a rebuilding situation. You know, I guess he allowed it in baseball. Yes. You know, and it didn't really work. It worked for a moment in time. They got to the playoffs in 21. But I think it took some convincing. I think it took some convincing and maybe he sees that it didn't work there. Ultimately, and he doesn't want. I don't know. But the attendance situation was different. The Bulls were drawing no matter what the record was and the White Sox weren't necessarily. OK, so JJ Redick is now the head coach for the Lakers and waters wet. That was going to happen as soon as Dan Hurley turned down the job from UConn, JJ Hurley was saying, hey, what about me? Because it's so unusual, man. You know, the fix was in. JJ Redick was doing a podcast with LeBron James. So you could see that LeBron's wheels is turning like this guy really knows about basketball. But what happens when the Lakers fall short and go through a losing streak? JJ Redick has got a lot of great basketball ideas and is a talent podcaster and a good business man. But as far as him being having autonomy of a team and grabbing a hold of the team and making them better, I don't know if that's going to be the case. This team's old. This team does not have athleticism. This team will be in the lottery in three years or less. So is JJ Redick Steve Kerr or is he Jeff Saturday? Means meaning Steve Kerr taking over and going out. Without experience. Because Redick has it from TV, right? Right, but at least taking over a team that has some talent. Like this is age and talent, as you mentioned. I mean, I'm just assuming LeBron is the co-coach here, right? Yes. JJ will run the practice. LeBron might be calling the plays and games for all we know. So I don't view this as this is JJ Redick's show. I view this as that's LeBron's show. And how could JJ think anything different from the outside? You know, this is obviously what we're all thinking. So what do you think? More Steve Kerr or more? Probably more Jeff Saturday. Yeah, probably more Jeff Saturday. He will be back in TV in two years or less. JJ Redick. Yeah, probably. No question. Probably. Because what happens when LeBron leaves? And AD gets broken down. Unless Redick shows himself to be this incredible leader. I think he's probably gone when LeBron's gone. I think so. So tell me this. I made I told you earlier that the Lakers, everything that glitters is not gold. Just because they got a great name and they've had, you know, championships with 17, 18 championships with my wife. Not everything that glitters is going like that. But it's true though. I'm going to use that. So who is that in baseball? And baseball parlance. What is that? Who are that the team that he's got a big name but doesn't do much. Well, trout in the angels, you know, over the years. Yeah, the Red Sox. I mean, they don't really have a lot of glitter though. You know, skins on the wall. It's like the one three world series. Yeah. Yeah, I thought you meant like right now in this moment. Yeah, I don't think it's the Red Sox. They don't have much glitter. I'd say in recent times, the angels have had some glitter with Mike Trout and O'Tani. Not much gold that has produced from it. That's exactly what it is. Yeah. That's what the Lakers are. Big name, but not much. Very similar to the Cowboys in that regard. Yeah, there's a lot of glitter there. No question. It's just it's one of these things where you're you're great from a marketing standpoint, but not from a. And that was a sense standpoint, but not for a championship standpoint. Right. The play into a championship does not count for the Lakers. It does not count. It does not count. So we're even getting the play in doesn't count as the playoff. I'm sorry. Like the Bulls. Well, you're playing twice. It's not the same count. I don't think it's stupid. Yes. Not the same, Jay Moore. It just is. Jay Moore. Thank you. You didn't need it. You don't need all that. It's an old star. The stress. Hey, Jay Moore. The struggling pastor just needs an amen. Just once. Just once. A little paddle to back. That's what he needs. Exactly. What's next for the Bulls? Also, Jesse has a question for Cubs fans. If you're a Cubs fan, stand by. This is for you in two minutes on cap and J.
