(upbeat music) - Hello, race fans, and welcome to Disc Golf Daily. We are the podcast that gets you caught up with Disc Golf News and Growth in about 10 minutes, saving you time and effort. It is Wednesday, that means it's time for all the news you may have missed. We will start it off, close to home. Special shout out to Rivas Markins Craig. (sighs) That is a new par five at Maple Hill. Link in the show notes to his quick video highlighting the work that is being done out there. Many of the comments to his Facebook post focus on my personal dislike of par fives. I still don't like them in general, but Course Pro Gage Benson convinced me that this would be a positive adjustment to the newly designed T and par four on hole nine. He was right about the new T and he's right about the additional pin placement. Just so everyone knows that the MVP opened by OTB, we will be playing two pin positions on two holes. On Thursday and Friday, both the men and women will be playing the par five to the new pin on hole nine. Additionally, on hole one, the men and women will be playing to the short pin just over the pond on the first two days. On the weekend, they will be playing the standard par four configurations on both of those holes so par won't change. I personally have talked with Steve Dodge about this and he could see six to nine different pin positions being developed over the next five years. What holes would you put a new pin on and where would you put our number two news story? Downtown Disc Golf at the Ledgestone. This event sold out over 300 T times. Here's what the organizers have to say about it. Come play disc golf in downtown Peoria. We've created a short ACE race type 18 hole course on Peoria's Riverfront, traveling around the Riverfront Museum, the Caterpillar Visitor Center and several other landmarks on the Riverfront. Every player will receive one custom designed soft blend disc created especially for use at this event. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play disc golf at Peoria's Riverfront and I'm gonna add this part, it has passed you by. However, you can watch pros play it on DGN and I personally love watching pros play ACE race type events. Over under on number of ACEs this foursome has, I'm putting it at five with four metal hits. (upbeat music) Our next story is PDGA Approvals. Say hello to the newest disc golf company, Disco, D-I-S-G-O. I was not able to find a website for them and disco.com is available for purchase. So they're not there. If anyone knows anything about these peeps, please shoot us an email at discolfdaily@aoyo.com. They now have five discs that are PDGA approved. The GP1 and GP2 are new button approach discs. The GM1 is their new mid. The GF1 is their new fairway and the new GD1 is their new distance driver, which appears to have a slightly inset flight plate. (upbeat music) Our number four news story of the day, we've got a lot today. Udisc's release point has a great article about Alex Williamson's journey to build a course. Before moving to a small town in Germany about 60 miles southwest of Frankfurt, Alex lived in Charlotte and Oslo, Norway, both of which have tons of great courses. Despite choosing the new region for its many appealing qualities, there wasn't a convenient disc golf course. Alex decided maybe he should build. A year after moving there, Alex emailed local officials to gauge interest in disc golf. 18 months later, disc golf park, Bod Sobernheim was installed, becoming the first public disc golf course within a 40 mile radius, offering free, healthy recreation to the community. Many disc golf enthusiasts have had similar projects. However, Alex's experience as an author and editor of the Udisc release point blog gives him an edge in telling us about his trials and tribulations in making it. Alex gained valuable insights into course creation. This knowledge along with data from Udisc was instrumental in the success of creating this course. Aspiring course founders should be prepared to commit significant free time, the process involves emailing, presentations, meetings, grant writing, running events, and eventually assisting with installation. Clear, professional, and concise communication is crucial in gaining support from local leaders. Understanding local decision makers' goals and demonstrating how disc golf can help achieve them is essential. You gotta ask questions. In Alex's case, emphasizing the tourism and community building potential of disc golf was key. Identifying the right location is also important. Consider safety, visibility, maintenance, topography, and parking. A beginner-friendly course is crucial for introducing the sport to a new community, making it enjoyable for all ages. Working with a professional course designer can ensure a safe, fun, and sustainable course. Finally, looking for opportunities and allies is vital. Alex's project gained momentum by aligning with a local government park overhaul and collaborating with a nearby sports club. These partnerships provided legitimacy and open doors to further opportunities. If you're looking to embark on a similar journey, resources and data available on you disblog and publications can be very helpful in the process. Alex, thank you so much for writing about your experience. Our next story, this is my favorite part of Wednesday. These are the top three non-disc golf news outlet Disc Golf articles. This one's from the Pensacola News Journal, proudly claiming Missy Gannon as their own. The headline, Pensacola's Missy Gannon wins European Disc Golf Festival Tournament in Estonia. And the start of the article begins this way. Missy Gannon's Disc Golf career has been going pretty well since moving to Pensacola last summer. Link in the show notes if you want to read the whole thing. Number two, the Virginia Gazette talks about the life-centering game of Disc Golf, the headline, Mindful Living, practicing mindfulness on a Disc Golf course, and the article starts thusly. In Halifax County, we are fortunate to have a great and well-maintained Disc Golf course at Edmunds Park. I'm very fortunate to have a 91-year-old grandmaster world champion teaching me the game. You want to read the rest? Link is in the show notes. And our final non-andemic Disc Golf news story from KCUR, the headline, "Kansas City's Disc Golf Scene" is among the best in the country. Here's how to get started. And here's how they begin the article. Looking for a summer game that'll have you hiking, testing your aim and enjoying just about every terrain type in the region, then Disc Golf may be for you. I love that these non-andemic Disc Golf magazines and newspapers are writing about Disc Golf in such a positive and exciting way. We are growing and they know. Next up, there's an interesting Reddit conversation about the best golf discs for ultimate players. As people in the sport, we know the answers would be the glitch, the sonic, the bird, the comment, et cetera. And those answers are correct. I mentioned this thread because ultimate is a lagging indicator of Disc Golf growth. If ultimate is growing in 10 years, Disc Golf is gonna be growing. Anyone who plays ultimate loves the flight of the disc and their knees and lungs love running around the field until they don't. Ultimate is possibly the greatest sport ever invented and it is so much fun to play and watch at a high level. And it turns out that it is also a perfect feeding ground for Disc Golf, which is a lifetime sport. If you know anyone that plays ultimate and doesn't yet play Disc Golf, offer to play a 50/50 round with them. Front nine play with an ultra-star ultimate disc. Back nine play with a glitch or similar. Let them see how much more control and distance they can get with a golf disc and get their mind thinking about how much fun our sport is going to be for them. Someday. Our next news story, Simply Disc Golf does a great job. I haven't had time to review these articles, but I definitely will be reading them. If you would like an in-depth look into the careers of Paul Macbeth and Eagle McMahon, yes, there are two separate articles, then you've got some enjoyable reading in front of you. Link in the show notes, keep up the great work, Simply Disc Golf. And we will close it up with the stat Mando, cool stats from this past weekend. This is going to be all Ricky all the time. Number one, most 1,100 rated rounds ever thrown. 10 by Ricky Wysocki. Paul Macbeth has seven, well, Schusterik has six. Eagle McMahon and Anthony Barella have three. That is dominant. Third highest rated round in Disc Golf history, 1119. Ricky just did that at the European Disc Golf Festival in round one. Only two rounds better. Paul Macbeth's 1132 at the 2013 Memorial and 1121 at the 2013 Vibrum Open. And closing out for the third stat for Ricky, he's got three consecutive course records. Minus 13 at the croquel open in round one. Minus 13 at the beast in round four of the European Open. And minus 16 in round one at the Tallinn Song Festival grounds at the European Disc Golf Festival. Congrats, Ricky, you have killed it. If you want to share some thoughts, news, or opinions, shoot us an email, discolfdaley@aol.com. Have fun, throw them straight.
