With you for another three hours, Padre's off today, back in action tomorrow in the nation's capital. Against the Washington Nationals, things got a little testy last time these two teams matched up at Petco Park. It ended well for the Padre's, let's just say this much, and they looked to continue what has been a pretty successful start to the longest road trip of the season. Yeah, great start, obviously, getting the two out of three in Cleveland, Tony, and you know, the Nationals, Dave Martinez, was in the paper today here and saying that, you know, this whole, whatever nastiness happened last time is behind him, they're not thinking about it, they're moving on. You know, that always remains to be seen, but don't you think if you're the Padre's, even though it really would be kind of enticing, I think, to at least throw one pitch at Keebert Ruiz. They used his ankle that you just let it, sleeping dog lie if you're the Padre's, because you know, you beat them the first time, why rile them up, they just swept the series from Cincinnati, so they're feeling a little better about things, but why? You're under man, you know, they're a little under man, so just try to go out and beat him, that's the best way to keep things, you know, in your favor. Keep stacking series victories, that should just remain the goal, I mean, you know, if the things were different, you know, maybe, but I think right now you got good, just took two or three from a very good Guardians team. As you said, the Nationals come in feeling pretty good about themselves too, as they just swept the series, they played in, so yeah, you got to come in, you know, out of this off day, you know, ready to hit the ground running. Well, it'll be Vasquez tomorrow, Washington has not decided, at least that's what it says here on their starting picture tomorrow, so we'll have to wait and see what Dave Martinez does, Matt Waldron will be right back at it on Wednesday followed by Dylan Cease on Thursday. That's a morning game, by the way, Thursday morning, and so I don't know if it's morning for us, yeah, I think it starts at like 9 o'clock Thursday morning, really, here in San Diego. Yeah, let me double check it, yeah, so yeah, 905 San Diego time on Thursday, so yeah, there's that, you know, one thing that's happened in the last six games. The three before the all-star break, three here in Cleveland. Don't think anybody's mentioned it, but I did see a tweet about it, so I'm going to bring it up. Xander Bogart's is eight for 17, since coming off the injured list, hit the ground running, you know, hasn't had maybe the big fly or anything like that, but, you know, he's back. That in and itself, five multi, five multi hit games as I was going to be in back. Yeah, five out of six. I mean, that's okay, right? I mean, so that's good. And we talked about the overriding thing with Xander back is that it gives you your best defense. And you're talking about winning a two one game in Cleveland yesterday. Tony, please correct me if I'm wrong, but the biggest play of the entire day. Unfortunately, as good as Michael King was, was not Michael King. It was Manny Machado going up to meet that throw and throwing out Ramirez trying to get into second base. To me, that was the game right there, because otherwise we got second and there's nobody out. Yeah, it's a huge play. And although the Guardians did get that run in from third, they only had that opportunity. There was no more opportunities after that because Manny came off came up to meet that throw from. That's right. If he waits for him, he's got no chance. He ultimately saved for Alta for making a, I mean, would would have been a bad mistake trying to even attempt to throw out. I forget who it was going to third, but Manny coming up and meeting that throw and then getting Ramirez on the backside to cut him down. It was huge. It was a huge, huge play that and what ended up being a one run game. I absolutely love plays like that, that win games and, you know, we talk about it all the time. Errors are, you know, in the books, it happens, but it's plays that are made versus plays that are not made that decide close to one games like that. And that was a play that was made by Manny. So, yeah, beautiful job. Higash Yoka came up with a big hit, you know, second and third, two outs. I always find those to be the most important at bats of any baseball game because they're two run at bats. The guy gets a hit, you get two runs. He gets out, you get zero and two strikes. I will say that the pitch probably wasn't exactly where Lively wanted it, but Higash Yoka still had to rake it into the left field corner and bring in those runs. And, you know, I'm just got to be happy for a guy like that, Tony, right, that comes in as a throw in in the trade. And I want Soto to hit two home runs today, so let's not forget what he's still doing for New York. But Michael King, Higash Yoka, Vasquez, this guy's been pretty invaluable coming back here to San Diego. Yeah, and it makes you wonder, you know, based on how the roster ended up being constructed that he certainly wasn't a throw in. I mean, he certainly wasn't the highlight of the deal, but they started the year with two catchers. And he was the guy, the backup all along. It was never a question in doubt. And I think we know from having the last couple of years how, you know, having a good backup or a backup in general will ultimately come into play. It has been the Padres over the past however many seasons now. So I think obviously the bonus is him picking it up offensively right at the time where Louise had slowed down and even gotten hurt at that point. He stepped right in and it couldn't have come at a better time. They've been very fortunate the last two seasons with the catcher spot and then at pockets of time, like picking it up exactly when it needed it. I think last year it was a franchise. It was Sanchez, Gary Sanchez came and read all the homers, you know, like eight homers in like the first like 15 games or something ridiculous like that. Yeah, well, he got she'll could keeps it up and that's keeping campus on kind of on the bench, although he had a nice game on Saturday, which was good to see. Couple of hits and a couple of RBI's and our guys Suarez continues to shut the door as he did yesterday. Another four out save. You know, real quick, you know, what's been impressive is is and we've talked about it at different times is the guys who have been asked to step up. Like Peralta, you know, him all of a sudden starting to swing the bat better. I mean, it just seemed that's and that's why they've been able to despite missing the guys that they're missing, been able to stay afloat is. And this is this is why, you know, I am positive. It's so and so positive about them because they're doing it right now without all of their pieces, but they're still finding ways to win. I don't know that we've been able to save that in the past. Like if everybody was hurting, it was a lot harder for these wins to come by. And, you know, I think a lot of it right now is due to their pitching, but nonetheless, they're still, they're still finding ways to win game right now. Agreed. Mike Schilt. Stay afloat. Mike Schilt is, you know, keeping this club right there. They're in a three way tie virtual three way tie with the Mets and the Diamondbacks for the final two playoff spots. The card, you know, and another thing we talked about the Braves earlier. I think it's been kind of just conceded that the Braves were going to get the first wild card this year. But you look up now, they're only four games, Padres. And they now lose Aussie albies for two months, which is almost the rest of the season. They've already got, you know, Acuna out. They've got Strider out and Max Fried goes on the injury list today. That's four, right? That's four big time all star players. I think the Braves could very well, you know, be joined in this race by the rest of these teams. And that could open up, you know, all three wild card spots. So it means to be seen. But yeah, I don't think you can just automatically admit Atlanta into the postseason right now. Got too many guys hurt now. And you know, listen, we talked about it too. Yes, you need a good team. You need guys to play well. You need some luck too. You need health too. Like all these things like have to happen. And it's not just health. You got to be healthy at the right time, right? It does you know good if you were, you know, not healthy all year long and then come August, September. You're all everybody's hurt. That's not necessarily the way you want to script it. You have to be healthy. You got to be healthy at the right time. And you got to need some luck. And you got to be good. And so we'll see. Like I said, Padres would offer you. You guys got any games to, we got any games to bet today? The Daily Gambit is tough because there's baseball. But there is nothing else. So yeah, I think we could just. What do you want to do? It's not even his broadcasting ability because he's obviously good enough to do what he does. It's his arrogance in broadcasting. I don't like people. You can feel it. I can feel it coming through the TV. It's as if Mike Turico gets on the microphone and says, "Hi, I'm better than you." And here we go. That just annoys me to no end. You're talking about America's sweetheart. That would be a good sketch right there. Like a good comedy sketch. It's just Chris sitting in front of his TV. And we're getting to hear what is actually being said. But in Chris's head, he is telling him exactly those words. Ooh, we might have an idea here for us. Get in the next couple weeks. By the way, I'm in the, probably the minority of people who really liked the fact that Chris Collinsworth never shuts up on Sunday night football. Or is it Monday night? No, Sunday night football. I love the fact that Collinsworth never shuts up on Sunday night football because that's the only thing that keeps Turico quiet for a minute. Oh, well this guy right here. He's a football player. No, you can mess it up, but I think I finally found a category that Tony's not going to have. You know, just as usual, never miss a question. I mean, is it alcohol types? So occasionally, at our stops, different organizations will have the great broadcasters that came through there or the great broadcasters of all time. Doctors have one. C isn't much better. Oh, C is way better than G. Let me tell you. I just think it's the end of his last name that gives him a little bit of your problem. It's like, you know what, we haven't heard much from our guy Dick Pound. We haven't heard from him in a while because usually Olympic time is Dick Pound time. That's a real name, guys. It's coming up. It's coming up. Speaking of the Olympics, let's get off of this before we dissipate into further trouble. The men's Olympic basketball team, a lot of people are calling it the greatest collection of Olympic stars ever. And I think that they should, you know, pump the brakes on that a little bit, especially after Saturday's performance. They took on South Sudan in a Olympic prep game. The United States was favored according to bet MGM by 43 and a half points. So imagine our surprise when we looked up at halftime and they were down 14 in a game they were favored by 43 and a half. LeBron James would ultimately hit a shot near the end of the game and they would hold on for a 101 to 100 victory. Now the reason that I'm finding fault with this is because a little bit of the arrogance in the United States basketball team, but I'm not a fan of what they did to Kawhi Leonard. And they don't have a problem having a spot for Kevin Durant who's been injured and hasn't been able to play. I don't think that they did right by Jalen Brown either, who I think is a deserving player. And I just wonder if they put together the best possible squad. But mostly it's the fact that the United States has been called. This is the greatest collection of talent of all time, Jason Tatum, LeBron James. I think the dream team will always have that. Well, that's my point. People are comparing it to the dream team. I don't think you can compare it to the dream team now on the one argument that I'll give this year's team and what they're all trying to get us to believe now is that the rest of the world has apparently caught up. And so these other countries, unlike 1992, when the dream team beat everybody by 60 points, they're much better. But South Sudan, like that just threw me off, Tony, I mean, it sounds like you need convincing that the world has gotten better is that what it may be a little convincing that South Sudan should be able to play on the same stage as the United States. That a couple NBA guys on there, didn't they? Dead one. Everyone. They had one. I don't know who it was. Honestly, I don't know who it was. I think it was. Yeah. Or former NBA. I'm not sure. I mean, listen, ultimately they won. These are warm up games. I'm not sitting here saying that South Sudan is all of a sudden a basketball powerhouse and should be respected, you know, in that fashion. But, you know, I think ultimately, you know, they wasn't a good, they didn't play well. And so the game ended up closer than it should have been and LeBron, OG LeBron had to bail him out as he kind of did the day as they took on Germany and ended up winning. I think it ended up winning by four, but, you know, I won by four a day. I think in some ways, and, you know, this, let me say this, outside from South Sudan who ended up making that game pretty close, I think it's just a evidence that the world is catching up and they can't just show up and we're both, you know, steam, both steam roll a bunch of these, these teams anymore. It does not, that hasn't been the case for quite some time. But South Sudan is a little bit, is a little probably not one of those teams. Here's my thing, Tony, and I, this is, you know, I'm on my lawn again where I spend far too much time, but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the guys they choose for the Olympic team, there's no glue guys on the team. Everybody is a scorer first, and I don't know if Jason Tatum or Devin Booker or even Curry for that matter necessarily lead the league defense and do the kinds of things necessary to win games. We talk about the fact that the rest of the country is, you know, closing the gap. To me, I think they need to do a better job of putting together an actual team rather than just the 15 leading scores. I don't think they did that. I think that is the argument that a lot of people I like Gilbert Arenas are making is that they didn't take the best guys. They tried to put the best team that fit together. And you know, I don't know that glue guys have anything to do with it because the dream team, the original dream team started to have any glue guys that had a bunch of doodles that they were scoring or assist, but they were so much better. That's my, I think now even the redeem team that, that won it all. They certainly didn't have a glue guy. I mean, they had virtually a lot of these same dudes that are on this team now and the young versions at the, these I recall the last time they got ready for an Olympics. They had some close calls early too. And then as they got closer and closer to the actual Olympics, they started to kind of look a little bit better and more like a team. It's guys haven't played all that much time. I fully expect it gets to where it needs to be. All right. You want to know how the world is catching up Chris in the top 10 of the NBA draft this year and the first round, the first two picks were from France, Australia. And then there's another guy from France and the number six pick. So a lot more international players being drafted high. Who shot do you on anyway? I'm on the USA side, but not they're going to play like that. It's going to play like well, they play Serbia in their first Olympic game. July 28th, what's that next Sunday at eight, eight, eight, fifteen AM. Is that a Yokich? That'll be their first game. Serbia. I don't know. That's joke of it, but he doesn't play basketball. Oh, that's I'm getting it. Yeah. I don't think it's. Yes. Confused. They play Serbia. They play South Sudan. They play Puerto Rico. Their first three games. They are 16 and a half point favorite over Serbia for whatever that's worth. Maybe it'll be interesting. Maybe it'll be more interesting. It looks like it's going to be more interesting than it ever has been before. Play that. All right. All right. We got Chris's Fantabulous Sports Game Show. Get geared up for a good round of that next on Gwen and Chris. 637 on the clock here in DC, 337 there in sunny San Diego, Tony, I think it's sunny. I assumed it was sunny. It is. Yeah. It's nice. It's a little warm, actually. Yeah, pretty good. As far as you guys got a little, it was like a heat wave coming into that bad boy, isn't there? Saturday was hot. Saturday was really hot. It was under the 90s out in the valley. Yes. Saturday I went for a hike and it was warm. I had to change shirts halfway through because it's definitely warm. Yeah. But it's so sweet. Wait, wait. How did the hike go? Wait. Are you supposed to be hiking there? I took it easy. Yes. I'm seeing my surgeon, actually, tomorrow for my six week checkup on my shoulder. So we'll see. I hope, I hope Scrabby doesn't mind me sharing this with everybody, but, you know, he has been, how shall we say this? A little more agitated as he was going through his shoulder recovery. It felt like it should be healing faster and it wasn't. And he would, you know, he had about a week stretch there where he was, he was not a very happy person. No, no, I packed Tony during text messaging with him. Yeah. I didn't really understand that one that day. I was just like, because we know each other so well by now, all three of us that if a text is in any way different than the normal text, we immediately know that someone's angry. And so we deal with that. And I was just like, okay, fine. When can you do it then? He was pressing me and I can sense, I can sense he was upset. I didn't know it was a shoulder. I was bothering him at the time, but I can sense he was upset. And so I just tried to play along as best I could and eventually the options that I presented him weren't satisfying. So he just kind of left it alone. And then he eventually met it too. Well, Tony disarmed me because he said, hey, man, is everything okay? And I was like, all right, I was a jerk. Now, I don't understand how a shoulder being sore can cause you to write a mean text though. I guess the connection. He was in pain. Yes. He was in pain. And I was angry that morning. I get it. I was frustrated with whatever was going on in my life that day. And so I took it out on Tony for, for a text. It's a testament to really how much and how well we know each other. Because I was a media as I just do some of these and I will say this. I will say this, Tony singularly reached out to me asking me if I was okay and he even called me to see if I was okay. So that is the type of guy Tony is Chris, on the other hand, didn't hear one word from me. Well, I'm not going to, I'm not going to be in Texas. No, I didn't really get it. I will say this because someone sent me a DM. I think you're not DM Deborah on Twitter. She posted this thing about how Chris, when I was sick, was saying that I was helping more at home than I ever did when I was here. And they thought he was making fun of me. Chris did text me after the show thanking me for the help I did at home. So everybody, we're all very, what is the word, copacetic? All right, we have, we have stalled long enough for this butt whipping that's coming. You said some nice things about me, but let's get to, let's get to the action, please.
