[Music] Scotty and Goss 3x7 heading for the top of 18 degrees and I take you back Scotty to April 20 when the West Coast Eagles defeated Fremantle in the Derby by 37 points while the two teams go out on a Saturday night on Ruben Jimby as a part of the West Coast Eagles. Ruben, appreciate your time. Good morning. Good morning Scotty and Goss. Going okay mate. Wow, would you like to wind back the clock to April 20 to find out the secret to success has been a pretty lean run over the last seven or eight weeks. Yeah, it has been. That was, I mean, it feels like it's quite a while ago since we got that wind but yeah, that was a great feeling but unfortunately during that period it felt like we were building something like we, I mean, we just been rich and in a bit freer than Pete Melbourne so it felt like the best was yet to come but unfortunately we haven't been able to, maybe wind since then but yeah, really looking forward to this weekend. Hey, Ruben, when you're an inexperienced young man just in your second season of football and your coach leaves your football club, it's a whole new experience. How did Ruben Jimby cope with that tumultuous time at the football club, the emotion of it, you know, he being your only coach you had at an AFL level, I'd like to know, get your take on things. Yeah, it was definitely a weird and interesting feeling. I guess in times like that, we don't really know how to feel. You go to senior leaders but I mean, a lot of those boys pretty much said they've never experienced this either like a coach leading mid season or even a new coach like Simo been there for four or eight years and there's not too many players, maybe except Jackie and Jadea, not too sure one had a different coach one or two years but yeah, it was, you know, the interesting feeling and yeah, it was a bit, you know, it was just weird. Like obviously, yeah, we really loved him. I love what he did to me for the last two years and opportunities. He's me but yeah, I guess, I guess change can be good sometimes and yeah, he really backs go in as a group and he's done a great job to really just settle the Shippo last two weeks or less, at least internally. All right, Ruben, before we get on to a couple of positives and you're going across half back, he's absolutely one of those. But after the weekend, mate, which was horribly disappointing, you know, when you're talking to us, we're going to be honest but it was horribly disappointing. Do you have anyone in your group that says, boys, just us, we need a chat or just, you know, a locking room, coaches out, that sort of stuff and some guys to hold people to account for effort and intent during games or is it just a matter of, well, no, we'll just listen to everyone because it looked to me as if there was a little bereft of leadership out there on the weekend. Yeah, we have had a few of those, quite a few of those honor sessions this year where it's time, yeah, coaches out and just the leaders speak first and then if anyone else has an opinion, can speak up. But I think Oscar's been really good at that. He is, think you think back, he's really honest and demanding him. So we really like, and also the likes of us at McGovern, he's an out there, but he always sets the tone massively, musically, and Tom Barras, those kind of boys. So I think, yeah, definitely wasn't good enough from us for the weekend. Our pressure wasn't there. We got smack down the contest. So we're definitely within the least part. That's definitely not the fully we're trying to apply. Half back, mate. It looks like you're enjoying it because it's providing some great run and it actually does look like you're enjoying footy around there. Have you ever played it before? Yeah, I played, I played it for two years in under eight year draft year. So that's, that's probably where I saw myself as a footballer. Yeah, coming into the league, at least starting there, but I think, yeah, I guess the attributes I thought, yeah, it might be able to, if they're looking to the inside, me, which probably hasn't quite clicked from me yet, which I thought, which I'm hoping I'll probably be playing a bit better footy in there this year. But I think I was still developing in there, but just in terms of getting footy in my hand, like, I guess the defense you started my game in the need to always kind of naturally tackling and running out in that kind of thing. So I guess it's a really good fit, and if you're good at the defensive thing, why not just go on the back line? Give your West Coast Eagles faithful hope for Saturday night. Tell us why you can turn around what was probably your worst performance for the year against one of the form teams of the competition in a big stage game, being a Derby. Yeah, massively. We've loved our fan support this year, and I think we've shown definitely what we're going to do at a home game. I know it's free-hose, home game, but we're still, I've shown there'll be a lot of West Coast fans here as well, and West Coast and Derby's are a different kind of base, you know, that motivation you get, especially playing your cross-town rivals, and obviously they're pretty strong at the moment, so I think that just gives us that another bit of kick to really find that next level, which we know we can do at home, definitely. Yeah, they're going to be pretty fired up. They were a damn awesome, we saw with our own eyes here against Melbourne. Hard one for you to make, and I know Jared Scofield's got five more games to go, and you don't, well, not after names, but as a young player in your second year, and you're probably the players, the tail doesn't wag the dog in regards to who is the new coach it's going to be, but what sort of coach do you think your team needs? Do you think you need a ready-made, seasoned coach, or do you think you need a development coach, a younger coach, a leading assistant coach? In your opinion on who needs to take the reins? Yeah, that's a great question. I think maybe that development, I mean, obviously you don't want a real new coach, I think we need a bit of experience there still, just because I guess experience is like what will help lead our young group, but we still have our awesome player leaders there, and I think a coach that has a bit of experience, but also really is behind and really knows what he's getting into coming into West Coast, being a younger developing group, and yeah, we just need a bit of that motivation, a bit of that guidance, so I hope to get to the next level, which I know a lot of our young players will, and obviously our leaders are awesome players that have done a lot in this public already. Well, I hope you like getting inkling, because my man here is just a declariting yesterday, pretty much a moral, you said a moral to be the coach? We've also declared three other blokes to be morals beforehand as well, but they haven't come through it, and Ken's a moral. Hey mate, can you give us any sort of update on one on my man, Jakey Waterman, and Liam Duggan, is he gone through his? He won't play Duggan's another week. Another week, right? And Gov, mainly probably the main couple. And Joey. Yeah, we've got Joey. Yeah, so obviously a couple weeks ago, last week, I've made the trip across the Latora Big Drive, which is, yeah, great to see him get back, which I mean, he's as tough as they come, so if you've got broken ribs or a bunch of lung, he'll get through. So, yeah, I think he's training this week, so hopefully he'll get up, which would be really handy. Jakey Waterman just had one week off, and I think he's back again, so obviously he's had that couple behind his knee for a while, which is pretty nice if you let you see, and I haven't been moving right after that, but hopefully he'll be back this week as well, and yeah, that goes through and protocol. So, Doug, I won't be back this week, but hopefully he'll be back after. Yeah, and Joey just had some on us, so hopefully you get it. Senior leaders back, which would be great. Yeah, very much so for a huge game against Fremont. If I was Gov, I would just have one more week missing, because there's a guy called Josh Tracey who plays for the opposition, and he will still roll anyone who's in his way, and I always worry about it. Oh, I've said to me, his Gov would drive anywhere to get a beer, because he sat in the corner box with Simo, and he said, "I'm not missing a free beer." No, exactly right. I'm getting back for it. And yesterday the boys got together for Joey, of course, because of the funeral for his dad, Craig, so well done to everyone at the football club. So, five weeks to go, Robes, personally, what do you want to get out of the next five weeks? Obviously, a win would be nice, and you've still got some opportunities there, but it's just going to be better than last week, and a tackle inside 50 would be handy from anybody. Yeah, I think personally, I just want to keep building the form of the last couple weeks, and I was back, like, I think, yeah, it's just my main struggle has been able to get the footy about this week. I've got a bit more than what I did 22, so I think we can keep building that. He's not running an area-based game. And as a team, I think it's just, we really just got to go back to being competitive, which is where it starts at the middle of the year. So, yeah, getting that pressure back and their contact back and their experiences that we're really strong at. So, until the next five weeks, you can be a super competitive and maybe jaggedy wins and do a bit of momentum into next year. Hey, last one for you, and this is off the text line. One of the listeners is one of the Eagles fans, Matt, Eagles fan. Can you ask Ruben, what it's like on a plane flight after you get beaten by 12 goals? Who is the first to laugh? Who is the first to try and change the mood? Was risky that one. Always risky. Yeah, one of the, I guess he's a middle-aged player, but you might think he's a bit younger. Jermaine Jones, he's pretty good at that life. He sits like old young boys are down, bro 13 or 14, and he'll always come down and shift down there and make a laugh and go see the fans and that. So, he's a great man to have us. He's got a lot of money. Yeah, he is. And this is what I say about a lot of people. I love every question he's spotting the team at times, but he just provides a little bit of spunk about them. You need those guys around your football club. He might not be in great form, but I do agree that you need some sort of barometer like him. Hey, Ruben, I appreciate your time. It's a derby mate. You grew up watching derbies. You love your derbies. You've got a chance to redeem yourself against Fremantle and maybe upset their season with a massive upset. Good luck. Let's start. Let's start some sort of major rivalry. Who do you hate the most of Fremantle Reben? Just tell us right now. Who's he going to kick off? My favourite play was hockey. So, definitely not him, but now I'll just obviously that one. Well played. Well played. Yeah, nice. Post-match will get you. Nice work. Good on your mate. Appreciate you coming on our show. So, guys, no worries. And here he is. Ruben, Jimmy, he's always good with his time here on Scotty and a goss. Is he going to make a career as a halfback? Is that where he needs to be? No, I think he goes back into the middle, but at the moment, I think he's playing exceptionally well. But he's learning more AFL crafts as well, by playing across halfback and accountability and that sort of thing. It's hard. And with Ruben, he's a ball winner. So, in the middle of the ground, we've said it a few times. When he's in the middle, he sees ball, get ball sort of stuff. But then when the ball gets flicked out of the side, and his man might be off him somewhere, he doesn't have that accountability. He's not the right word. He doesn't have that close checking side of things because he's too busy trying to win the ball himself. So, halfback, I think it's a really good learning curve for him. And I think he's playing great for you there. So, I think he goes back in the midfield though, at some stage. So, he comes back, dug and definitely not. Waterman's back, goves line ball. It's a better-looking team very quickly. It gets better looking team quickly. I see, I shifted. You know how I was bullish about them beating security? You were very bullish. Yeah. And then I changed my mind because I wasn't aware. I wasn't aware that I wasn't going to have a young Waterman, and he'd take those two out. I mean, that's two of them. I mean, McGovern, Yo, Duggan, Waterman, are four of their best six players. Well, absolutely. And when I asked him, they looked absolutely, with Oscar Allen, your captain, he's down the forward line. I know he did go back at stages, but they would look bereft of leaders out there on the weekend. Someone would say, "Boys, get on my back," and I'm coming. And come with me sort of stuff. They look bereft. And when you look at that, Waterman, Duggan, McGovern, Yo, there's a leadership group. But someone has to step up out the field. They have to have some fight. They have to have some effort. And if you don't get up for a dooby, and you don't bust your backside on it, and if you're not talking, chase at every opportunity, you don't even know when someone's going to fumble. It might be that because you've dug in for the early five, six minutes of a chase, they fumble in your catch and dive over the boot to smother. Just show some desperation.
