Time to talk to the West Coast Eagles, Bailey Williams, who was one of the shining lights on a difficult day at the MCG last week. He got the better of Max Gorn. Max Gorn, as we now know, is out for the next couple of weeks with an ankle injury. Hey, Bali, welcome to the show, and congratulations on your own form, but again, a disappointing performance overall. - Yeah, thanks for having me, boys. Yeah, yeah, a little bit disappointing, but that's it. We're in a bit of a tough while at the moment, so I'm just trying to play as best as I can. - Was that your best game for the years? You know, sort of that role, finding that defined role, Matt Flynn in. Matt Flynn, not in. You going forward, then there's Oscar coming back. It seems as though you've been pushed and shoved around a little bit. Did you like being the sole Rachman, so to speak? - Ah, yeah, definitely. I don't know if it was the best game of the year or not. You know, I've had a lot to focus on with, you know, me and Timo, we've talked about, you know, rolling forward and stuff like that, but I really, you know, enjoy being, um, up and around the footy, especially when things aren't going the way we want. Um, it's always good to be up in the contest, so, no, it's great. - Better when you're leading the Rach, there's no doubt about that, Bailey. I've got a prickly one for you straight off the bat, mate. All week we heard there's going to be a response to the Hawthorne game, and then you get seven kicked on you in that first quarter. What was the build-up like? What was the conversation before that like? And are you disappointed that the response really wasn't there? - Yeah, it is really disappointing, but, you know, we wanted to have a, as you said, a strong response after last week. And, um, you know, to dish up that first quarter, it makes it hard to come back from. And, um, we wanted to get it going in the middle. And, um, to a certain extent, I think we did that, but there was parts of that game that just fell away completely. So, yeah, it was disappointing. - How much responsibility do the players take? How much reply, I mean, everyone's talking about Adam Simpson's tenure and poor Adam's in the news, time in and time out. There's all talk of backroom texting and all sorts of carrying on. Just tell us about, give us a player's perspective on how much responsibility you, as a group, take. And have you, as a group, met outside of the footy club to try and find a remedy for on-field performance? - Mate, to be honest, I think we take complete responsibility for what happens on the weekend, you know? There's only so much a coach can do. And Simo, you know, he's doing his best. And we back him all the way. But, um, you know, we're in a tough spot. And there's certain conversations we have. But, um, we've shown we can play with footy. We just need to, um, you know, get down at the cockpit and get back to our best. - I don't want to hop on the negative bars. And we're going to move forward because you've got Brisbane this week. You've got to really bounce back here. It's a very good team who's in good form over here on Sunday. But when reports come out, and I'm not saying the reports are true, I'm not saying they're true. But there's all talks of text messages going with disgruntled players. Do the players start to look at each other internally and go, "Mmm, is that you?" or "Do you know who it is?" And does that just create an unfair tension or an unnecessary distractions of playing group? And you're not going to tell me you didn't talk about it or you don't think about it, or did you actually, um, try and deal with it once it hit the headlines? - Yeah, look, it's a bit of a funny one. And, you know, there's always little things like this going on outside noise, but, um, you know, life, I didn't say it was a little bit shocking. Um, but at the end of the day, like, personally, I don't know anything about it. And then, um, you know, it's just not ideal. We want to focus on 40, not what's set around, you know, outside of the club and stuff like that. So, um, it's a bit of a funny one, but look, I'm just trying to focus on four years. - Mate, if you're looking at point figures, you always just point to the reserves, that's all it is. It's like, blokes were getting around. That's the ones you look at. - Yeah. - What's the, uh, baili, enough in that. We said earlier on, we just put that aside because it happens at every club and all the time. But, um, playing Brisbane, as Goss just mentioned before, like they're a good side, they're playing well. One of the things, one of the things that was probably ordinary on the weekend is the tackle count. Uh, what are the things for you guys that you say that are non-negotiables that have to be good for you to be good? - Oh, I think first and foremost, it's been good in the contest. And if we can, you know, bring pressure, be good in the contest, and then, um, have real intent to defend, I think that'll, that should hold a single to bed. And I think that's where we start our way a little bit, is getting done in a contest and not defending the way we should be. So, um, you know, Brisbane are a great side and they're a great midfield again. So, um, you know, we'll try and, we'll try them well this weekend and hit them with all we have. - A lot of talk, obviously, about you playing rock forward. But I'd imagine this weekend with Gove in serious doubt, um, can't even get on a cut to get home. That did be Ruck pushing back to help out TB and the back half. - Yeah, definitely. Yeah, yeah, Gove, the bit sore, unfortunately. I don't know if he's back in Perth yet. He, um, he stayed over in Melbourne. So, um, I, yeah, we'll see what happens with the side. I would assume that I'd be playing in the rock and, you know, I try and get down back and help out as much as I can, even if it's, you know, um, meaning up a joke down at her for a bit and letting, um, TB do his thing. That's what I try and bring. - Yeah, it's, um, gonna be really interesting in regards to the rebound of, of last week. Because, you know, the game looked gone at Court of Tom. You even mentioned that bar. So, you know, the, for the next three quarters, it was a bit of an arm wrestle. Tell us when you're coming up against someone like Maxwell. Yeah, I know where you went down with an injury. But you were holding your own pride at that. So you were in pretty good form against arguably the best Ruckman in the competition. Or one of the Ruckman, best Ruckman in the competition. What's it like in the preparation when you're going up against this guy? Knowing, you know, he just finds front spot. He's gangly. He puts his arms out. He makes it hard for you to work to front position. How much work goes into that prep? Yeah, well, as you said, he's arguably the best in the business. And I'm a little bit undersized in there. But I, um, I really get excited for the challenge. And it's, um, it's something about my footy. I really enjoy getting up for, you know, a challenging game. And if I can bring that physicality and, um, and, you know, just to really get going in there, it's something I really enjoy. And moving forward, um, I'm excited to keep doing it. Yeah. Well, you got a big one this week as well. Obviously, the big O in Oscar McNeil in 204 centimetre unit. He's also a barometer for Brisbane when he's rocking and rolling, then they were generally playing well how many times you played on Oscar. And, and what have you learned about playing on him that you're going to need to try and exploit this weekend? Yeah, he's obviously another big bloke. And I think I've only played him a handful of times. So, um, similar to gone, you know, I'll go in trying to be really aggressive and using my strength and my physicality and my athleticism. And, um, and, you know, I'm lucky. I've got a great midfield group around me that support me. And, um, yeah, I'm looking forward to another, you know, big challenge. Gonna be huge. What's your relationship like with Adam Simpson? Been good for you? Yeah, good mate. No, he's been good. You know, obviously, the club's had his challenges, but he's stuck by the players and we stick by him too. So, no, he's been good. Good on you, mate. Appreciate you coming to the phone today. Off to training now? Yeah, off to training, mate. Just parked out the front so we're about to hit him. All right, have a good day. Appreciate it. Good on you, boys. There he is. Bally Williams joining us from the West Coast Eagles. And they'll need him to continue to grow in that role again. He had a season high 28 hit outs on the weekend. Of course, has been doing that rock role a little bit, but then Matt Flynn came back and he sort of looked between, betwixt and between, didn't he? Yeah, he's a competitor, Bally Williams. And we've been full of praise for him for a little while now. He's coming along, but that's what they need. They need someone like him to throw his waiter in in the middle, start with and set a scene. 131255, Tukey Depot, open line, or 0487736736. Former Perth Wildcat Luke Travers is over in, playing basically in the G League, trying to get onto the court in the NBA. Of course, he's now with Melbourne United. He spoke to the assembled media about what he has to do to try and cut it at the top. It's always, every year, it's ASAP. You're trying to get there as soon as possible and you don't want to wait around and stuff. So, I've just been trying to put in the work. Obviously, I want to say my first year, I came back from a summer league, Danny Mills, who's the GM at Wildcats, gave me a sheet of paper of all the people that got drafted and stashed, who didn't play in the NBA, which was a huge motivator. And even to this day, I still think about that. And, you know, you never want to be in that sort of category. so to make the NBA is always a dream and it's going to be a goal mine every year.
