Now you would think that with a title like that, there’s a whole lot of common ground, but for at least some on the political left, standing strong for America’s soul and sanity is now considered right-wing!

This is Turly Talks. Dr. Phil was recently on the left wing David Pakman show to plug his latest book, We Got Issues, how you could stand strong for America's soul and sanity. Now, you would think that with a title like that, there's a whole lot of common ground, but, you know, I'm very interested to speak to you today, because in preparation for our interview, I've been watching some of the Fox News appearances, looking at the book, et cetera. I never really saw you as a guy who delved into political issues, per se. You seem more willing interested, and I must say, maybe more conservative than I thought you were. Is that a fair assessment? Now, immediately, as you could see for at least some on the political left, standing strong for America's soul and sanity is now considered right wing. In fact, the video was ominously titled Dr. Phil Confronted. You are a right winger. The left is so politicized, our society, that standing strong for America's soul and sanity is now considered far right. The reason why I say it is a lot of the language in the book, and when you talk about issues like immigration and culture and others, it seems as though it alludes to going back to the good old days, individual decisions in the style that many Republicans now talk about with regard to schooling and parenting, et cetera. But you're selling, saying it's just not the case. No, and that doesn't mean that there aren't politicians on both sides of the aisle that talk about these issues, but if you really think about raising a family in America, whether it's now or 50 years ago or 20 years down the road, we still have to keep our eye on what I think are core issues in America, and I think the backbone of America is the family unit. I really think that if we have strong families, if we have strong family values, and I think that our families in America, as you've heard me say and read me say, are under attack. And I think some of those attacks are unintended consequences of technology, for example, but these are things that whether politicians talked about them or not, if they tried to legislate about them or not, I would still be talking about. Now again, what Dr. Phil just said there is actually hardly controversial. Both sides left and right have concluded that the breakdown of the family is the single most significant factor for the breakdown in society. For example, in the black community, the illegitimacy rate is now over 70% today. The poverty rate among blacks is 37%, but if they're married and working, it's only 8%. 5% of both husband and wife are working, which is comparable with whites. And a kid, any kid, black or white, raised without a dad, raised in a single parent home is five times more likely to be poor and commit crimes, nine times more likely to drop out of school, and 20 times more likely to end up in jail. Dr. Phil is absolutely right to be concerned about the state of the family and its deleterious effects on culture. But how do you explain that to someone who presumably doesn't even know what a woman is? How do you explain the cultural consequences of the breakdown of the family to a political ideology that doesn't even believe there's an objective definition to the family? >> No, that's why I say some of this is the unintended consequences of like technology. >> Yeah. >> But then we've got some where we've got people that are just trying to change some of the core values in America, core values of family, trying to rewrite history. And we've got people that are coming in saying, well, we want to change history. We want to change what kids are being taught in history. We want to change biology. We want to change all of the things that we have for 100 years had empirical data to support. >> But tell me more about- >> I don't want to gloss over this. I really want to understand this. Changing history. Okay. What was the history that used to be taught that now has been changed by the tyranny of the fringe? >> Well, you know, pick an area. We can talk about biology where we have always had two sexes. >> But what about history? >> Well, just to pick history, not biology, because you said history, biology. What about history? >> Well, there's a lot of history to biology and you would be missing a big point to pretend that there's not historical biology. >> Hey gang, with everything going on right now, it's hard to say what can happen or what will happen. Yeah, very interesting there how he didn't want to talk about biology historically understood, especially in light of what Dr. Phil just said about the importance of the family. And that's interesting because we today of course have an entire woke industry mired in the contradiction of both denying and at the same time affirming basic historic biology. We're living today with a left wing that has embraced the notion that gender transcends biology, that a woman biologically defined is fundamentally different than a woman culturally defined in terms of identity. And yet they're also at the same time advocates for kids to be able to go through transition surgeries to realign their bodies, their biology with their preferred gender identity, which negates the first assertion that biology and identity have nothing to do with each other. Regardless, the interview eventually turned to the problem of cancel culture. You know, in preparation for the interview, I looked at the academic setting because a lot of times when we talk about cancellation, we talk about, oh, a comedian who said or did something and then for a while they didn't have shows or something like that. You know, Louis CK, for example, et cetera. I looked for the revocation of tenure for professors in a lot of these schools that you talk about or allude to. And really it seems that when tenure is being stripped, it's for real wrongdoing, plagiarism is uncovered, sexual harassment of students, et cetera, I really struggle to find evidence in a country of 330 million people of tenure being stripped just because of using the wrong language. Now I'm not saying that there aren't wacky memos that go out or I'm with you that this stuff exists anecdotally. But if we think about what is happening, big picture, I actually struggled to really find examples of this as an epidemic. Tell me where I may be missing something. Well, I don't know what you mean by epidemic. Well, that it's happening that professors are being stripped of tenure, not for serious violations of their, you know, like I said, sexual harassment, plagiarism being involved in criminality, but just because they said something that is maybe not politically correct. I'm just not saying that tenure is being stripped from professors for that. Do you have any examples of professors that have lost tenure in that way? I do, and I'll provide it to you. How's that? I'll get you a list and send it to you. That would be, I would love to do that because if that is happening, I want to expose that and I want to talk about that. Yeah. Forgive me. I'm a little skeptical of that claim. I'm not sure what research this guy was doing. If you were one of my students, I would have sent them back to the library. The studies are certainly out there. The University of London scholar, Eric Kaufman, recently published a very important study back in 2021 that detailed the frightening increase in political censorship on college campuses experienced by faculty members, both here in the States and in Britain. Kaufman found in the surveys that he conducted over four and 10, nearly 50% of U.S. and Canadian academics would not hire a Trump supporter. Nearly 50% would not hire a Trump supporter on their faculty, and in Britain, one in three would not hire a Brexit supporter. Moreover, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Education maintains a database of the growing trend to deplatform and disinvite conservative academics to university campuses. Since the year 2000, disinvitations and deplatformings among conservative academics surged to nearly 200 incidents, and they've been increasingly getting worse. Of the 192 disinvitations since 2000, 114 more than 50% have happened since 2009 and just over the last 10 years. Moreover, the National Association of Scholars maintains a database of primarily American academics who have experienced campaigns calling for their dismissal and found that while there were only four incidents of such in 2015, 2016, it rose to a whopping 65 in 2020. Across the pond, a report by Civitas in December 2020 discovered that over half 53% of all 137 British universities experienced demands for censoring speech around alleged transphobic episodes. How anyone could even remotely deny this is happening further demonstrates that it's not just America's soul and sanity that's been part of the realized, it's truth itself.
