This podcast is part of the Sports Social Podcast Network. [MUSIC] Boom, the boys are back in Blitz month. This time, I have one half of my favorite case date podcast, the half that I like more than the other half. You've heard him on trivia. You've heard him on primers. You've heard him on whiparounds. You've heard him last Blitz month and I think the Blitz month before, one day he is going to be a lawyer and maybe the president of the United States, maybe a senator, maybe just a lawyer. I don't know, but that's still pretty good. He is super smart. I consider him, I don't know if I'd call him a friend, but I'd like him to be. I don't know. Really the balls in his court and they finally invited me on his show. This is Connor, Connor Balthazar, geez, tried to give you an extra tea there. Connor Balthazar of the Aggieville alley cats, Connor, I script out just about everything I'm supposed to stay except for those intros. Sometimes I hit him out of the park. Sometimes I stumble through and look like an idiot. I think I look like an idiot on this one. The how are you doing? You moved back to Manhattan, right? So you're a resident of the happiest place in America? I am. I'm super happy to be back. And for what it's worth, we can be friends, Scott. I'm very happy to be your friend. And now's as good a time as any to announce my candidacy. I'll start small at the Senate, but we work our way up. But it was a great intro. I appreciate it. I mean, Hatton is awesome. So happy to be back. Since you're back, I know you're a big volleyball fan. Are you already kind of eyeing the morning and you're like, all right, I might have to get into a couple of games. Weirdly enough, they sold out season tickets again, which honestly, I'm not going to lie to you. I was a little surprised by. I thought, OK, last year, they didn't get to the tournament year two in the arena. I'm sure they're still going to have some single game, but selling out season tickets. So I'm excited for the volleyball team. I know you're a fan of the volleyball cats as well. No, I'm super hyped for the volleyball team. My parents, who live a ways away, they were one of the season ticket buyers. And so they're not going to be able to do the mid weeks. So I'll probably be getting some tickets for most of the mid weeks. I'll have often I'll have a few things available. So I think I'll find myself in the more released a few times. All right. Well, it's not a full volleyball preview or anything like that, but you got to think with Alia Carter coming back, she is poised to try to have an all American type season and get to the NCAA tournament for the second time in her career. You know, again, not a full volleyball preview, but how pumped are you that she decided to come back and you know, she has to be, you know, maybe not a revenge tour, but you know, I wouldn't want to get in the way of Alia Carter more motivated than usual. Yeah, I was a little surprised that it was her that came back and not Mackenzie Morris. I thought it'd be flipped, but I am super happy that Alia Carter is back because she I know had a sophomore slump that like went into a junior slump as well. And so last year, she kind of finally put things back together like she had done her freshman year. And so this year really, I think could be a truly special season for her and it also really helps that she has a night Clinton and the other side who last year, she like had a few games where she just took over a few times and was incredible. So it helps that there's a lot of attacking options with her. But yeah, you said not a volleyball preview, but they're going to be a really fun team. Yep. And they got some good transfers as well, but I will be touching on that with Brian Smoller later on in Blitz month, the voice of the volleycats, the soccer cats, K state baseball, K state women's basketball, pinch hitting for men's basketball and football, whenever he's needed. Brian Smoller, truly the best there is just like Manhattan Brewing Company is the best there is. Blitz month is presented by Manhattan Brewing Company, a place that Connor needs to get to, you know, since some of us don't live in the happiest place in America. But it doesn't matter if it's game day, home on the road, or if you're just sitting at home, there is something from Manhattan Brewing Company for you. Our official tailgate beer of the year is telling me we put it doesn't matter if you like something crisp and crushable, a great IPA style or something multi to make you think it's already fall, they can take care of you. Stop by each time in your Manhattan grab a pint, get grab a couple four packs, grab a couple of crawlers, and of course, talk to your local liquor store and tell them if they're not stocking Manhattan Brewing Company four packs, please, they're distributed all through the state, be very firm, the be polite Manhattan Brewing Company, truly the best there is. All right, I centered around defense with you because, you know, offense is very sexy and you are a sexy man, of course, but you like to get down and dirty as well. I got that information from your girlfriend, no, I'm just kidding, I'm just kidding. But we have when you look at the defensive end production from last year, I was disappointed in it. And not only was I disappointed in it, you had some transfers out, you had some folks move on. And really when you look at it, mott and stuff will be in, they're coming back for their final year. Are they going to be the star power or is that going to come from Chidi, is it going to come from Jordan Allen, is it going to come from Travis Bates? What about Toby? I guess, is it going to be from the committee? I don't know. I'm looking to you for guidance. Are we going to have that superstar or are we just looking for something that isn't on the roster? My heart really wants to say that's going to be G-D-O-B-I's or Jordan Allen. And I think it's more likely that those guys become stars than are returning guys, like mott and stuff will be in. Not to dismiss those guys, but I do think those guys are probably about their ceiling. Whereas we have those younger guys, they're tons of room to grow, particularly, not particularly both of them, really. Obie eyes are an Allen. They have huge, huge ceilings. If we want to go off of my all football 25 dynasty with K-State, Jordan Allen's going to have like a 20 sack senior season here in a few years to be a first round pick and win the one party. I'm not going to set those real life expectations for them, but I think that we could see something special down the road from either him or Obie eyes or. But this year, I bet mott has a bit of a bounce-back season, particularly with assuming Obie eyes or is at least one A or one B on the other side. We're going to be seeing a more consistent presence on the other side of the ball and not really thrived when Felix was across from, which I mean, who wouldn't in that situation. But I think having more of a complete unit in the defensive end room is going to help everybody. Bryson Thai lifts all boats there. So I think all the guys that you listed are going to have their moment one way or another. All right. So this isn't on the prediction. So technically, I will not hold you to this. But if you had to pick who amongst the edge players, we can throw the entire defensive line in. I doubt any of the interior guys will compete for this. But if you had to guess, who's going to lead the team in sacks amongst defensive linemen? Ooh, that's a tough one. I'm going to just go with my heart and say, Chidiobie eyes or because I remember as a recruit, he was a really tough eval because he didn't have a ton of film. It was pretty much entirely just projection on him. And he's kind of met the necessities or the prerequisite that I needed from him, which was he pretty much needed to put on 50 or 60 pounds when he got to campus. And he's done exactly that, maintained a lot of his athleticism. And he also broke through and was able to play a little bit last year. Jordan Allen, who I still think is going to be great, he didn't play last fall. But I'll say Chidi, but marginally because there's a lot of talent ever. Yeah, a lot of talent and, you know, it's a lot of guys who are worthy of getting on the field. I think we're going to see more rotation at the end spot than we probably ever have. And I know there's been a lot of whispers about some four downtime. I don't think that's going to be four down and we see, you know, Malcolm, Alcorn, Crowder and Uso out there, or Malcolm, Alcorn, Crowder and, you know, Damian, I think they're going to try to find a way to get three defensive ends out on the field. And I think you might see stuff will be in an or Chidi slide in and play a traditional three tech. But we'll wait and see, you know, not trying to give away any secrets, but so much, so much smoke about experimenting with three down linemen. And I'm sure I'm going to be able to get someone on the record to talk a little bit more about that later. We'll move to the second level. No questions about the secondary on here, because I feel confident there. But I think the intriguing thing on the linebackers, because I feel great about the three guys who I'm projecting to start. Alec Moreno, Despreneil, awesome more. If health is good and those guys are playing 85%, 90% of the snaps, I think we're in a great spot. But when I look behind that, that's where I don't know if I'm worried. I don't know if it's like, hey, I'm proven, but there's potential there. What do you see when you when you look at what the second line on that debt chart could look like? I'd say I'm somewhat similar to you, particularly because there's some young guys that last year, you can look at last year and say that they were really close to having like kind of a breakout season, like Austin Romaine, I think got about as close as you can possibly get, because he just wasn't quite good enough. But for the amount that he played and the amount of trust the staff showed in a true freshman to play Mike Becker, I do think that's worth something. Even if he did have his fair share of true freshman mistakes, Asa Newsom is the other guy where he I thought was playing really good before he got hurt. So that that's a bit of a significant loss last season. But then you have other guys like Rex Van Y who played sparingly last year, but I'm really interested in him. I like the idea of like, I don't call him a hybrid, but like he has some safety qualities to him, like his frame, I think is very safety like, at least in terms of his wingspan. He could have some real utility blocking an RPO pass window as a sand backer, or he could be really good over the middle as a Mike Becker. He has some versatility there, but there's definitely some intriguing pieces behind your main guys there. I mean, Bo Palmer, he like had a good KU game last year, like so like he might have been the reason that we won that game, but yeah, there's there definitely cause for concern, but I think that I think that we can probably count on remain to at least take a bit of a step this upcoming season. I honestly had no expectations from any point, a case after watching his tape and he ends up seeing the field as a true freshman. And so I mean, I guess I goes to show like how valuable, you know, our huddle tape insights are, but yeah, but I guess the main thing with the linebacker room is those starting guys are fantastic. I mean, does, I think is still really, really slept on for, I'm as good of a player as he is, but there's just a lot of quality in this room. And a couple guys moving in there as well, like Camps Alice, who I really liked at safety, who I hope breaks out kind of like does did, making that same move. But we'll have to wait and see on him, I think. And I know I think he, I know, I think I always laugh when I say that. I believe he missed a little bit of time in spring ball with an injury, but, but I agree with you. I think we could see a Des Purnell type career trajectory for Camps Alice. And I do want to echo something while I wasn't as low on Austin Romaine as you guys, but I was very low on Jack Fabris who I've heard some fun stuff about his summer, which is, which is wild. But he didn't even read shirt last year, I don't believe or if he did, he played in all four games. And look, I think you hit the nail on the head as much as, as much fun as we like to have looking at some of these high school kids and you and Ace do a way better job at it than I do, just goes to show that we really don't know anything. And I think, I think that the more we make sure we're having fun, we're doing our best. But as long as we kind of just stay true to us being fans, I think it makes this podcasting thing a little bit more fun. Yeah, and every year, there's at least a couple guys that just make both of us just look stupid. Jacob Parrish is probably the quintessential example for that. Yeah. Yeah. I wasn't going to bring that one up because I was always a Parrish guy and I'll pat myself on the back, but I wasn't going to bring that up. You did. You did that to yourself. That's also the fun side of it is that everybody every offseason is going to have the guy where they look at and they're like, this is going to be like a guy. He's low rated for us. That was Garrett Oakley. We were in on Oakley from the beginning, but, you know, for every good eval, there's equally just historically awful that you can have. But that's, like you said, that's the fun of it. It's fan podcasting and I don't work for on three years, 24/7. I don't do this for a job, although I imagine I could do it at least somewhat well. I think sometimes compared to some of the ratings I give these guys, but I think you could because, again, I think they get it wrong just as much as they get it right as well. Outside of the five stars, again, two, four, seven, always when the NFL draft comes along. There was like, oh man, you know, you know, of the first round draft picks, 20 of them are consensus for five stars, which is their whole thing. It's not what you're going to do in college. It's hey, they're projecting NFL draft. But again, not that that is not what this podcast is for. This podcast is for the Blitz month predictions. And that is what everyone is tuning in before we get to them. This couldn't be happening without our friends at Charlie hustle. Charlie hustle specializes in vintage, inspired hometown and collegiate gear. And they produce the best officially licensed K-State gear in the game, going a little road gear, folks, because I was chatting, chatting with some folks at Charlie hustle just today. And they informed me that their countdown to kickoff is coming up very soon, very soon. And I can't tell you exactly what it is. I can't share the designs, but I can tell you a new K-State varsity jackets coming out. I can tell you a new hoodies coming out, and I can tell you two of the coolest looking shirts that they've put out are on the way. So Charlie hustles countdown to kickoff is very close. Stay tuned. It'll be happening in the middle of Blitz month. So you'll hear me teasing this all throughout the month. But I promise you, it is going to be worth the way Charlie hustle vintage made fresh. All right. Let's get into those Blitz month predictions completely open ended. You can answer this whoever. There might be some follow-ups, but who are you officially going on the record with for your offensive MVP this season? I mean, it has to be Avery, but if it's not going to be Avery, that's where I think the fun really starts, I think one pick has to be DJ, but if I look elsewhere, I'm going to go on a bit of a limb and roll with the guy that I've always been a fan of that Garrett Oakley. I think that's expecting maybe a larger jump than I should be expecting for his second year as being a contributor, but I'm still super high on Garrett Oakley and his upside. I think he's an NFL tight end. And I am really hoping that with an explosive offense this year that he gets the opportunity to break out. Now, I'm skipping some low hanging fruit there, but I'm mainly half of the reason that I like coming on Blitz month is to just like plug my favorite players that nobody has to know about. Well, I like it all officially put you in the Avery camp being your guy. I want to ask about about Garrett Oakley. I liked him. I didn't love him. I was a will and CEO guy. I thought he was going to be the breakout guy last year, even though he was a true freshman, but I think Garrett Oakley is going to be that next NFL guy. You know, you got a little taste of brightly more. We got confirmation with Ben Senate. I think the pipeline becomes real with Garrett Oakley. What is it about his game that you like the most and what do you think the connections going to be between Avery and him? Because I think and this isn't taking anything away from Ben Senate. He was a damn second round traffic for heaven's sake and he deserved that, but I think part of his statistic, you know, strapping to a rocket, go to the moon had to do with that. That was Will Howard's guy. We saw it in the press conference. Maybe a little too close. I don't know. I'm not going to tell anyone what to do, but he was Will's guy. I don't know if Garrett Oakley is going to be the Avery Johnson security blanket, but I do think they can work well together. What sort of chemistry do you think you're going to see from them this year and what sort of stat on would you want to predict for Garrett Oakley? If Garrett Oakley can hit somewhere in the realm of about 400 yards, I think and several touchdowns, I'm going to be pretty happy with that. I think that was Ben Senate's sophomore season was around 400 to 500, if I remember correctly, and so I think if Oakley can hit that trajectory, I mean, if you really want to be generous, you can say that he's already a little ahead of where Ben Senate was, but there are also just, despite both being tight ends, they're very different tight ends, but yeah, it's a fair question, though, about Garrett Oakley and his connection with Avery Johnson because you're absolutely right. It's extraordinarily obvious that Ben Senate, like Will Howard was looking to him and then to Philip Brooks and then just ramble pretty much half the time and dump it off to DJ at the last second. Yeah. No, you're absolutely right, that was abundantly obvious a lot of the time, which to be fair, if I had a guy as good as Ben Senate to throw to, I'd be throwing out a lot as well. It worked out. I can't tell you how many times I rewatched the game and it's, Will Howard just pumping it in and triple coverage and Ben Senate found a way to come down with it, so not shading it because Ben Senate's going to be a very rich man after a very long NFL career, and I believe he might have just gotten gaged as well, so I think he did. Yeah. Congratulations. Hey, state volleyball players. And he bolded it. Yes. Yes. K state power couple. So congratulations to them. And look, I drafted, I drafted a certain first round draft pick quarterback in my dynasty fantasy football league. So I hope the connection between him and Ben Senate is a strong one. All right, let's get to the defensive side of the ball. We spend a lot of time talking defense already. Who are you tabbing to be the defensive MVP? Because this is the question. I think I'm going to have a million different answers to. I'm role with Marquis Segal here. I think he was one of my favorite players by the end of last season, mainly because I mean, he was so frustrating at the beginning of the season because he had multiple obvious gas, particularly the Mizzou game. He got kind of burned by burden a few times. Did he was put in a rough situation having a solo cover? I want the best athletes in the country, but by the end of the season, he, I think was playing as the best safety on the team. And that's what that's with a really, really good performance from BJ Payne as well down the stretch. But I think Segal, I mean, I think he's like a like pair of butter fingers away from the team and picks last year almost. Well, and maybe being an All-American, I mean, I think it was Cole Manbeck at Big 12 Media Days, told him to his fate, oh, was it cool? Someone called him Stonehands to his face at Big 12 Media Days. I can't remember who it was, but it sounds like that was a big part of his game. So, you know, a couple of pick sixes, a few more interceptions. I think Segal could be like on All-American watch before it's all said and done. And Chris Klimann has called him the best safety he's had at K-State. So... There've been some very good safeties on the final state. Well, hell, just the three we have back there. Again, I've been saying it for a couple of months. I know I'm not the only one. I'm not going to try to say I was the first one. I'm not trying to sound the only one, but I think all three guys back there will be NFL draft picks. So... Yeah. We'll keep it. We'll keep it moving. Inside of the ball, who is going to be the newcomer of the year, true freshman or transfer? Another great question. I'm torn between two guys on either side of the ball, but I'm going to go ahead and say Jordan Riley on defense. I think that that's going to be my pick. I think he's getting a little bit underrated right now, partially because we're so used to having good safeties and we're focusing on Siegel and Payne, who are the returning guys. He also got really disrespected and I'm calling it football 25 ratings. He's only a 77 or something like that, which I think is kind of crazy, but I don't have a ton to back it up other than I really like his ballstay film and there seems to be good early returns on him and sounds like he'll probably be a starter. Yeah. And again, I said this from the jump again, not going to pretend I was the only one. I think that is an upgrade over Kobe. Kobe was definitely a fan favorite, but I don't think he was the same last year after his knee injury. I'm not rooting against him at Oregon, but I would be surprised if he is the starter come big 10 play for them. But we'll see. Hoping I'm wrong would love to see him go head to head with Will Howard, which Oregon Ohio State that's a conference game. So weird. Who's going to be the breakout player of the year returning player who makes a big impact for the first time at K state, not going to be an asshole this year until folks, what doesn't doesn't qualify for a big impact for the first time. So go whatever direction you want. I'm going to go a little bit unorthodox with this one. I'm going to say Andrew Lane gang. I think Andrew Lane gang on the offensive line. He was one of the first, I think really like major recruiting wins for Chris Kleinman and company. Because I think we'd be out. I think it was like Minnesota and Stanford and maybe Northwestern and get Northwestern. So I mean that like at the time, that was like an unprecedented victory over like the last five years of recruiting. And I mean, now that's like another Tuesday, but he was a huge win. And the staff has loved him the entire time that he's been here, but he just hasn't white broken through yet. I mean, even back in 2022, when we played Baylor, we were bringing him out as a sixth offensive lineman and some special packages in that game. So it's clear that we really want to get him on the field and healthy. And so if he as the presumed as a presumed starter on the offensive line going into this season, maybe that's just what he needs is an off season of consistency and knowing that he's going to be one of the guys. It's like because he could be an all big 12 offensive lineman, I think. So I'll go with the injury line game. I love it. We'll go next. What is your pendulum game of the year? My favorite question of all the butts month. That is a excellent question. There's a lot of candidates. I'm going to roll with West Virginia on the road, I think is probably my pick. I mean, there's never really a truly easy big 12 road game, but West Virginia, they're kind of a wild card, I guess, this year, because they've had a bounce back season last year and people really like Garrett Green. I think he's a little overrated, but I still think he's a returning starter in the big 12, which does count for something and Morgantown has historically not been the easiest place for K-State to win, it hasn't been impossible, but we're going to have to really show up and be ready for that one and not have a let down game after what's probably going to be a pretty emotional Colorado game with a lot of spotlights on it. So I'll say West Virginia. I love it. What's K-State's record going to be in this? This is in cement. I know it's early and, you know, I said this to Mitch. I'm saying it to you. I'll say it to Ace later and Chef tomorrow, I understand it's early, but I have to hold you to this. If I see you predicting something else somewhere else, I'm going to have to stick your fellow boneheads on you to break your leg. So you're sticking to this no matter what you say. I really struggled with this one because I look at the schedule as a whole and I have one in mind, but then I go game by game and I get a different number. And that's been making it really difficult. But I'm just going to go out on a limb and pick the one that I'm getting by going game by game. I'm going to say 11-1. Okay. So since you went game by game, I will not hold this one against you. What is that game that you go through and you're like, "Nope. That's going to be an L." I flip-flop between two that I think are toss-up games and one of them, it will break my heart. And you may never see me again if we lose this. The West Virginia game I brought up earlier and then the Iowa State game then this season. If we lose the Iowa State game, Ace is going to be doing a solo podcast from then on because I may not survive. But especially if we're sitting at 11-0. I'm having literal physical reactions to just thinking about that. Woof. Okay. We're going to move on. Since 11-1, I assume although I've come up with, and I hate to even put this out into the world, I've played around with scenarios and anyone DM me, I can send you the link. I've played around with scenarios in which 8-1 doesn't get into the big 12 championship game. I am assuming a little bit, but saying 8-1 in conference play, I assume you have K-State in the big 12 championship, right? Yes. Yes. Who is K-State playing in your scenario? Probably Utah, I think that they're kind of the popular pick. I also am kind of trending towards that for not necessarily logical reasons but just they're not on the schedule and I'm just kind of curious to see how we face off against them. I definitely don't want Utah to win, or I really don't want them to even make it from a fan perspective because I don't want them to feel that good about themselves in their first year in the big 12. I don't think they deserve it, but I think that they're maybe the most reasonable pick All right, and then I will not hold you to this one, but are you predicting a Utah big 12 championship or a K-State big 12 championship? I can't in good faith predict a Utah big 12 championship after seeing their internet fan base for a while, so I'll just pretend that they're all the same pick a K-State to win just to soil their Twitter fan base. I love it. Well the final question, we always kind of end with something that isn't directly related to K-State. We like to have fun with this final one. Fun fact, the 2020 question was how many games will K-State even play on their schedule? We've come a long way since it's turned into a series, so I'm glad we don't have a pandemic to talk about, but since this podcast has been going since Grant and I started this, there's been at least one completely shaking to its core surprise job opening in the realm of college football. So my question to you is what is that job going to be this offseason? Man, really good question. I'm going to say USC. I don't know if that's a huge surprise or not, but I'm going to roll with that. I think that's my knee-jerk reaction. I mean, nothing else that is going to send shockwaves through college football because that is like a program with a lot of history and money. Now is it a surprise? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on how much you like or dislike Lincoln Riley, but that'll be my answer. I think that's a great answer, especially given his villain arc leaving Oklahoma for that job. So that's a great answer. So far we've had Oklahoma State and USC. So I should keep it on a notepad next to me and see if anyone says the same thing, but those are the two we have so far. Connor, that's all we have. Thank you again for coming on Blitz Month. Please plug everything you guys got going on at Aggieville, AlleyCats, any other projects, social media, everything. Tell all the boneheads what they're doing wrong if they're not following you guys. Well, I mean, make sure that you're listening to the Aggieville AlleyCats podcast. I follow us on Twitter, I'm at Aggieville-Acats. We're on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and pretty much anywhere. I think we upload to YouTube as well. This does some really, really great YouTube videos as well. He always credits me, but I do literally nothing on them. It is entirely him. So he's just being humble. So go and watch some of his YouTube videos that he's put up. And make sure to get out to me now and make sure to watch the cats. Make sure to watch the non-rebs as well. The volleyball women's basketball, baseball is kind of having an interesting portal season right now. So they may end up being a little better than Mason and I are giving them credit for it, but we'll see. So I haven't recorded this yet. And your episode will happen before the Q&A episode that's happening on Thursday. So I want to ask me about the portal class for baseball. And again, I always tell folks whenever baseball gets brought up, I do not follow it closely. You want good baseball coverage, go to the Aggieville alley cats, but with rules sticking around and some of those pickups, I mean, could they be scrapping for postseason players? Is it still a little left on the bone before you can jump all the way in with two feet? I think that going into the portal season, I was leaning on the direction of them being a very fun team, but like nipping at the heels of next four out. But after some of the portal pickups we've made, I think we are pending seeing development from other players like the last team in or the first team out right now. There's a lot of unanswered questions, but there've been some really nice portal guests and AJ Avasko not getting drafted and seemingly not signing with an MLB team is going to be massive because he'll be a true freshman and he is going to probably start at first base for case. He just hit like 370 in like the futures league over the summer and is like a high school all American like it was shocking to me that he did not get drafted or signing anywhere. So that's like the next case state baseball superstar right there, I think. I love it. You guys heard it here. First via Connor belt is or so yeah, I love it. Connor, thank you so much for coming on. I can't wait to be listening to you guys once the football season gets going again. Nobody covers all the sports at case state better than the Aggieville alley cats. And again, they give a great different flavor from me. I'm way more vibes. They really crunch stuff and get after it.
