Michael O'Hanlon with the Brookings Institution says the president has to show a leg up on Donald Trump. Which he'll do best if he shows some degree of youthful vigor, not so youthful vigor, but at least vigor. And that argues for keeping the speech shorter than usual and more focused. The administration sources tell the AP the president tonight will announce a plan for the military to help establish a temporary port on the Gaza coast. Sweden has formally become NATO's 32nd member. The AP's Sagar McGani reports security concerns in Europe are spiking over Russia's war in Ukraine. President Biden notes NATO was formed as a shield against aggression. Today, we have fortified this shield. What Secretary of State Anthony Blinken saying Sweden's addition makes the alliance bigger and stronger than ever. Today is a truly historic day. Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson says after two centuries of non-alignment with major powers and decades of military neutrality, Sweden has taken the next step by protecting both itself and the alliance. He will be a guest of honor at tonight's State of the Union address, Sagar McGani at the White House. The House has passed a bill to arrest migrants accused of theft. As a Republican response to the recent death of a nursing student in Georgia, a man arrested entered the country illegally and was allowed to stay to pursue his immigration case. Residents and authorities tell the AP gunman attacked a primary school in Nigeria and abducted at least 100 students as they were about to start the school day. On Capitol Hill, Fed Chair Jerome Powell says a sweeping bank regulatory proposal will be significantly revised by the end of the year. A potential victory for large banks, civil rights groups say the proposal would make it harder for black and Hispanic Americans to get mortgages. This is AP News. Politicians in Haiti are desperately trying to form new alliances as the country descends into lawlessness because of gang violence. Haiti remains largely paralyzed with schools and businesses still closed amid heavy gunfire blamed on the gangs that control an estimated 80% of the capital. The country's embattled Prime Minister Arielle Henri has faced increasing pressure to resign, which would likely trigger a US-supported transition to a new government. Below Neil, a human rights expert on Haiti, told the AP, "I've been working in and on around Haiti for 30 years now and I've never ever seen it this bad. It's absolutely catastrophic." The new political alliance has been formed between former rebel leader Guy Filipe, an ex-presidential candidate and Senator Maurice John Charles.
