AP news. Good morning. I'm Ed Donohue. Texas utility provider XL Energy says it appears its facilities played a role in setting off a massive wildfire in the Texas panhandle. It's the largest fire in state history. The Minnesota-based company says in a statement, it disputes claims that it acted negligently in maintaining and operating infrastructure. The official cause of the fire in Texas has not been determined. President Biden is working on his State of the Union address. He'll lay out his plan tonight for a second term, as well as what his expected opponent, Donald Trump, would deliver as president. This is White House press secretary, Corinne Jumpier. Looking at what President Biden faced when he came into office and where we are now, it is clear, he's gotten more done in the first three years than most presidents have accomplished in two terms. University of Chicago political science professor William Howell says the president needs to address the questions from people who think he is too old to be president. What he's going to need to do is say that all the issues that matter in the actual governance of the country is completely up to the task. Look at all of his accomplishments while in office. He needs there to be plenty of testimonials to which others are going to need to bring forward towards his ability to continue to govern and to best represent the interests of the country. A source tells the AP House Speaker Mike Johnson urged Republicans to show decorum toward the president during his speech. The trial has started in Pontiac, Michigan for James Crumbly. His son shot and killed four students at Oxford High School in 2021. James Crumbly is charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. He bought a gun that was used by his son four days before the shooting. Defense attorney, Mary L. Lehman says Crumbly did not know what his son was going to do. He did not purchase that gun with the knowledge that his son may use it against other people. The mother, Jennifer Crumbly, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter last month during her own trial. This is AP News. I'm Seth Zutel, and this is Markets in a Minute. Stocks are ticking higher and helping Wall Street to erase its losses from earlier in the week. The S&P 500 was up 7/10 of a percent Thursday, trading just above the record close it set last week. The Dow was up 189 points, it's about half a percent. The NASDAQ composite was 9/10 of a percent higher. Treasury yields dipped as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell headed to Capitol Hill to testify about interest rate policy. The Fed is expected to start cutting interest rates later this year. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 4.08 percent. Victoria's Secret plunged 29 percent after forecasting lower sales this year. Analysts were looking for modest growth. Traders are also trying to guess when the European Central Bank will cut its rates. The ECB left those rates alone on Thursday. Seth Zutel, New York.
