AP News, I'm Hyam Penjuanji. Justice Department has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to halt a new Texas law that allows police to arrest migrants who enter the country illegally. The AP's Lisa Dwyer. The emergency request sets up another legal showdown over the federal government's authority over immigration. Under the Texas law, state officers can arrest people suspected of entering the country illegally. Once in custody, people arrested can agree to a Texas judge's order to leave the country or be prosecuted on a misdemeanor charge. Migrants who do not leave after being ordered to do so could be arrested again and charged with a more serious felony. The law is set to take effect Saturday unless the High Court intervenes. I'm Lisa Dwyer. A settlement has been reached in a fake elector case in Wisconsin from the 2020 presidential election. AP correspondent Ed Donahue has more. According to the settlement, two attorneys for then-President Donald Trump, Kenneth Chesboro and Jim Troopis, orchestrated a plan for fake electors to file paperwork falsely saying Trump won in Wisconsin. The two men turned over more than 1,400 pages of documents, emails, and text messages. It's a strategy used in six other states, including Georgia, where Chesboro has already pleaded guilty. There is no admission of wrongdoing or liability in the agreements in Wisconsin in which Chesboro and Troopis promise to never take part in similar efforts involving future presidential campaigns. Michigan and Nevada have criminally charged fake electors, but there's no known criminal investigation in Wisconsin. I'm Ed Donahue. And there's chaos and Haiti. Powerful gangs are attacking key targets like prisons in the main international airport as alliances are shifting. AP correspondent India Grant has more. But what happened to the weekend was a new descent into chaos with up to 4,000 prisoners freed when gangs stormed the country's two largest prisons. This is AP News.
