I'm your director of fun and games for the afternoon. Joining me, as always, on this beautiful Mitch Cobb Monday, it is Philadelphia's number one hockey beat reporter, Charlie O'Connor, what's going on today, Chuck? Had a pretty good weekend, now just ready for another fun-filled week of July hockey talk. There's nothing like it, and we're going to get into a little bit of our off-season playing a little later in the show, because why not kill time with behind-the-scenes talk? But there are some things kind of sort of happening, maybe. Right now, it's a beautiful Mitch Cobb Monday. And because of that, we have an update. >> Do we? >> He comes through. >> Do we actually happen to? >> We have a picture. This is what this is, and hockey news hub put it out, but it was on, it was on, it was on his Instagram. >> It was on his Instagram. >> Yeah, it was on Mitch Cobb's Instagram story. >> I would like to believe that pretty much every fliers fan that watches, or this is the show that also has an Instagram, at this point, follows him on Instagram. >> I follow, like, no one on Instagram, and I have now followed him the last couple of weeks, because, like, I have to. I guess this is where we get all of our updates. But I initially saw it this morning on hockey news hub, and I was like, oh, okay, because he did say the other day, whatever that interview happened. He's getting on a flight on the 20th. Now, today is the 22nd, but the thing that no one was like, well, do you mean tomorrow? We're a month from tomorrow, you know? And it's since been deleted, but, like, to follow up on the hockey news hub tweet was, I believe this is a flight to Dubai or something, and, listen, he's about a month away from the rest of his career's beginning. He's got some disposable income, he's been a pro for a while. He should probably be enjoying himself a bit. And if he's on a flight to Dubai, wherever it might be, good for him. >> I mean, my viewpoint is, look, the earlier he comes over the bat, sure. >> In the end, because if he comes over, presumably that gives him more time to adjust to a new culture. It would give him more time to work at the facilities, you know, work out in voorhees, work out in the weight room, start building relationships with the trainers, start building relationships with some teammates, like Joel Faraby and his whole crew, like, he can begin to make friends and get integrated, you know, meet, like, there's a mule who can kind of be the translator, and that would be a good thing. However, like, it's not a requirement. I mean, the requirement basically is get here at the start of September, because towards sends out his letter that basically says, you damn well better be here by the start of September. I know Camp doesn't start until, like, September 20th, but if you ain't, I'm going to hold it against you, so you better not, like, get there on time, you got to get there two, three weeks early. >> It's the Tom Coughlin, like, early is on time, on time is late, if you're late, don't bother showing up. >> Exactly. >> Sort of thing. >> Yeah, that's, that's towards. >> Yeah, shockingly enough. >> Yeah, that's it. >> But if, if Mitch Cough is making an early trip here and is going to start settling down here a month early, like, that's good news. I don't think it's necessary, but it would, it would, I think, help his adjustment period. And if he can get here, it's the sooner, the sooner, the better, in my view. >> That's the thing, is like, I, again, he's, he still has a month or two before he actually needs to be here. But the transition isn't the same for everyone as we're seeing with whatever the hell is going on with a Lexi Colosseau, but you're coming from an entirely different hemisphere, an entirely different part of the world, an entirely different culture. Now, all of a sudden, you're coming over to South Jersey, Philly, PA suburbs, wherever the fuck you're going to live, like, it's going to be an adjustment of some kind. >> Absolutely. >> The sooner you throw yourself into it, the easier time you're going to have maybe, especially, he's going to be with the NHL club, you know, Zamoula is part of kind of that social dynamic with basically the young leaders of the team. >> Exactly. >> There could probably be a help, you hook him up with Fidotov as well, just some of the younger or, >> Fidotov's one of the oldest guys on the team. >> Yeah, he's not young anymore. >> He's well above the average age of the team, but you know what I like, he just got here, too. You have a group of guys kind of going through the same thing. It could probably be helpful for him, but like you said, it doesn't need to happen any time soon. >> Yeah. >> Well, this is just like, obviously one, we're just starved for content, we're, the off season hasn't exactly gone the way we'd hoped in terms of activity, like adding pieces or even subtracting pieces, Mitch Cobb getting on a plane possibly to come here, maybe to go on vacation or literally anywhere in the world, I guess it's not the biggest news, but it is like, well, maybe he is coming there. >> There's a couple things I want to talk about here, number one, though, because you hinted at something I do want to discuss in debate, but the fact that he put something on his Instagram story being like, what's next? >> What's next? >> Like, come on. I mean, the idea that he doesn't know how crazy flyers fans are and how obsessed they are in this, right? >> He's the element of this, right? >> Oh, he is thriving. >> That's great. >> Like, he is relishing in the fact that, you know, he's a 19 year old who like an entire city, well, not even an entire city, but an entire small section of diehard fans, particularly of the online variety, is obsessed with his every move, and he is feeding them. He is absolutely playing to that crowd, and I mean, look, this kid knows he's hot shit. He does, and he knows that everything he puts on social media is going to be analyzed and hyper-analyzed by a subsection of the craziest and most hardcore fans that are online, and he's playing through them. And I have to say, I respect it. I get a kick at it. >> I think like, it's also important to remember, like you said, he's 19, and with that goes with like, generationally, yes, we look at it, and we're far more online than like is probably healthy for us. But like, we see the difference of, all right, but you know, outside of that section of the fan base, like you go up to a random dude at Wawa, and be like, "Hey, what do you think of Maffee, Mitch Cobb's Instagram story?" He's going to be like, "Get the fuck away from me, guy." But like, that very online, like that's his generation. This is, he is an internet sensation. We're not really doing anything. >> Yeah. >> You know, like he posts a video-- >> He's just really good, huh? >> He posts a video exactly, yeah, but like, he deadlifts one time, and it's a two week conversation for us. He has to be reveling in that a little bit, but I do think while it's funny, it bodes well, because there's going to be a lot put on him, and he doesn't seem to be shying away from that at all. >> That's fair. >> And he's going to need, he's going to need to perform well in the spotlight, because at its best, this is a hockey town. >> It is. >> The town will very much support the team and be all about you, and ride you hard when things aren't going all that well as well. And two, he's got the hopes of an entire fan base on him. Like, this thing, this organizational plan, if he's not a star and a big one, it fails. >> No, I mean, I guess they could get lucky some other way. >> I mean, if they make 10 other moves that all go according to plan, and then some Luchenko becomes a superstar. >> Yeah, if Luchenko is better than him, like, sure. >> Yeah. >> But chances are-- >> Most likely not. >> Do you need him to be a superstar for this thing to have a change? >> Yeah, he's the centerpiece of the Briere Rebuild Plan, which is why it's so essential that this works out, and which is why this year is going to be so, in terms of, the word I'm looking for is just like, like, cyber-analyze. Like, everyone is going to be trying to figure out, like, okay, does he click with torts? Is there tension? You know, is he becoming friends with his teammates? Because it's so essential to whether this is going to work as to, like, how he does, and how he does early. So that's why it's going to be such a big deal. But the conversation I want to have with you about it, it's because today, there's a back and forth I'm having with myself as to whether this is weird. Like, because my first instinct about this Mitchkoff stuff, and whether this is weird, when I say this, I mean, like, the fact that people are obsessing over whether a flight from Russia to Dubai is then going to go from Dubai to the US, and then coming up with random flight plans that are possible, and all of this is on Twitter. My initial instinct is always, I love the fact that people are excited. That I love the fact that this is positive energy around the fliers for once, after years and years of only negative energy. And really, the bulk of the energy on Twitter is still negative energy because people are batshit. But this is positive energy, and I like positive energy because it's far less irritating than constant negative energy in large part, driven by people who are purposely trolling to create more negative energy because they find that funny. So on one hand, I am loving the excitement and the, like, on no doubt about a positivity surrounding all this, because this is all coming from the fact that everyone's super excited about my vegetable. On the other hand, like, this is not just a little bit weird, isn't it? Apps are fucking lutely, Charlie, but, like, yes, 100%, it is weird. And the fact that it's a 19 year old kid makes it pretty, like, makes it weirder, like, this is somebody, like, this is somebody who's almost half my age, you know? It's certainly strange. This is, like, a college freshman. But sports fandom is also just very weird. That is true. Yeah. Like, if you were to, like, if we were to show aliens with no perception of what sports and, like, fandom is, like, yeah, so, like, 20 to 50,000, sometimes 100,000 people show up in this one place, all wearing shirts with other people's names on them, getting drunk and getting in fist fights over this game that they have no control of, like, whenever you break anything down in those terms, it's weird, like, oh, so a guy just goes up and, like, starts singing a song to you, and you're, like, singing along with them. That's weird. Like, when you put anything in those terms, it's weird, but, yeah, social media has allowed for it to become even weirder. Oh, that's the, absolutely, and that's what I'm thinking of, like, I was joking around for the show with, like, Jamie and people, like, are we, are we going to do the Otani thing where we're, like, bringing up the flight tracker, like, oh, he's on his way to Toronto? Like, I'm not doing that. I also don't know how to find a flight tracker, so, like, that's not something I'm going to do. I'm going to leave that to John Clark. Yeah. You know what? John Clark will have a bad beat. I am absolutely fine with us playing John Clark's, like, airport interview on the show, rather than me or you doing it, if I don't have to figure any of that out. That's fine with me. But yeah, it's definitely weird, um, all the elements. It's a young kid. It's like, he's flying. But, like you said, he's definitely, at least on some level, playing into. Oh, I do agree with that. 100%. And if that's the case, then it is more, it feels like it's part of a game that everyone's playing. Then it's like, it's all in the game, like, it's all in the game. It's all, then to me, it's, like, more part of the fun than it is, like, we're being stalkers. Yeah. Like, yes, if this was a real world situation and it was just, like, some girl I have a crush on, I'm going to find out her flight itinerary, like, that's fucking scary. Yeah. But since it's all, like, in service of, he's going to come and do the Michigan for us a few times this year, and I'm not going to show up at his house. I'm not going to be doing late night drivebys. You know, um, don't do that. Yeah, don't, please don't stalk this kid. Don't do that. Can we not do anything? Jesus Christ. Like, since it's probably not that, I guess the weird, it being weird, yes, but, like, on the funny side, it's all in good fun. It's part of, I think that's kind of where I'm at when I will, it's certainly weird. It's odd. What I will say too is like, and this is just my personal opinion as a journalist, is like, I understand why it's a really big deal to fans as to when he actually gets to the United States. It's really, like, it's not that big of a deal. It really, like, objectively speaking, because, like, he signed the contract. He's going to be a flyer. Like, he's going to get here. This is an essential part of this whole process. Like, there, I almost feels like there is a, there, there's underneath all the excitement. There is a lingering unspoken fear that at some point, the rug is going to get pulled out from it. And if it, like, he's just not going to come. He's going to change his mind. He's going to, like, have a heart attack. Like, there's just, it just seems like there is this unspoken fear of, like, no, this couldn't possibly be real, which is why everyone seems to be, not, and not everyone, like, a very small and obsessed subsection of Twitter is obsessed with this, like, when is he going to get here? When is he going to get here? He was a journalist, kind of, like, it doesn't really matter because he's going to get here. Like whether it happens on July 24th or August 14th doesn't really matter that much in the grand scheme of things. But I do think there is a little bit of an underlying fear of, like, this is too good to be true. Something is going to go wrong. And they're not fully going to believe it until he actually is in voories where the flyers had on in front of the media. Yeah. Like, closes on an apartment, like, gets a car, brings his family. No, I mean, I'd be lying to you if I said there wasn't a part of me that was just, like, crossing my fingers until he does arrive. And it is 100% scar from, listen, man, Fadotov signed a contract. He was at the fucking airport. Well, it wasn't at the airport. They pulled him out of the practice facility and threw him into a van for my understanding. All right. Wasn't quite at the airport. He didn't even make it that far. Like, I'm just like, he was on his way in route with her, like, metaphorically or actually in route. He was planning to come. He probably already had travel arrangements booked. Did we not at all shocking? And then they were like, actually, you're in the armed forces now. Yeah. Going to an aircraft carrier. Have fun, kid. Congratulations. Um, and then Colosov signed a contract, got loaned out. It was a get. You'll come. He came. And now what? You don't know. Yeah. He's probably coming, we think. Maybe not. Yeah. When Brett Flair is like, I don't know. Oh, yeah, I do. Oh, yeah. He's coming to the club. No, things are cool. Don't. You don't. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. His name is Putin. Um, like, I'd be lying to you if I said I wasn't the leader. The least bit concerned. Like, yes, I think it's probably all going to go well. But there are a number of things, uh, uh, Fadotov, Colosov, the flyers, all of these things. Like, our luck until it changes is bad. Mm-hmm. Fair. Like, uh, nothing ever goes right. Unless they like, even the smallest little things, ah, they're making the playoffs unless they like lose eight in a row. No. They fucking lost it. Well, so here's my question. I'm just saying. But here's, here's my question. And maybe this is just, it's special because it's the first time he's coming over. It's the first time people are going to get to see him on the ice and see him as a flyer. But like every future trip that he takes in the summer from Russia back to the United States, like, is going to, in theory, be just as fraught. Yes. Like, he could in theory at any summer decide, I want to say in Russia or any summer of Vladimir Putin could say, yeah, none of my players are going back. Sorry. Like, is, is this going to be a yearly thing? Is Mitch Coughwatch going to be a yearly thing that people are going to freak out about until he actually lands back on North American soil? Yes. Or is this a special one-time thing because we haven't seen him yet? Um, I think it's, well, like, there's going to be more people right now is different because it's just us, like, it's these hardcore fans who are so invested, it'll be different and it'll be like, oh, yeah, he came before, so he'll come again, but also way more people invested. Uh, and like we've seen it, man. Like what? It was last summer in Minnesota, it was like, yeah, we're pretty sure we're pretty sure. Yeah. They were definitely concerned about caprisov. We're pretty sure caprisov is on his way. We'll let you know when it gets here, but we don't know. And that's after a few years in the league, there's just so many outside factors. One, just might not want to come back. That happens. Yeah. Two. There's a whole lot of crazy shit going on in that part of the world. Sure is. We're terrified of that and we don't really know exactly what is going to happen day-to-day. All of that. Yeah, I do think, um, unless there are major changes politically, which could get worse. Yeah. Yeah. No, it's never like he had a question before the one. Things could get worse. Yeah. Like we are going to have this some sort of, I don't know if it'll be like this because right now is special. Yeah. It's like we got to fucking get him here. Like we just got to see him. Yeah. He has to be on the other side. He's not yet real. Yeah. He's still see, he's Mark Alt right now. Like I know he exists, but I've never seen him. Yeah. Yeah. And then we'll finally actually get to see him. But that will be, and that will be different. Exactly. And like to be clear, I want to make it abundantly clear that I'm not scolding the fans. I love the excitement. I just think this is an interesting thing to talk about because like it is a little weird to be guessing about a flight path. It is a little weird. Now I don't think that people like the fans are weird. Well, they are, but like in a good way, but my point is is like, I think it's worth talking about whether like what is going too far in terms of the excitement level surrounding is it possible to go too far or is it just like any positive energy is good things? I will take this level of weirdness over the batshit depression that we've had for the last five years or so, it's fair like from COVID on and like things leading up to that weren't great. But at least we got that little, we got a nice up until March, nice little run. Yeah. Like what? Got that eight months. Had that nice little run. But like from game seven against the aisles until Mishkov gets here. It's been basically doom and gloom. Yeah. True. And I will take anything over that. But I will agree with you on one thing, Charlie here is perfect lead in here. You're just great at this. Yes. I will say that maybe we could choose to chill and just like a slight show, but you know, between 10% she'll between work, social media, life, the world. It's no wonder we are more worked up than ever course lights celebrates rising above and choosing a chill mindset, why not turn to reigned out barbecue into a karaoke house party? Or after a tough loss, settle scores with an ice cold, peace offering, make the choice to choose chill, then reach for a course like it's mountain cold refreshment and listen, we've had plenty of opportunities following this hockey team to freak the hell out over the years. I know I have on you've a lot of you been listening to my post games. I need to make the decision to choose chill because that's not my mindset. I need to choose to be that way. And there's no better way to chill than with an ice cold course light. So whether you're freaking out about a flight pattern, injuries, where they're going to draft, who the hell knows, you need to find the blue mountains in your fridge and enjoy a beer as cold as the Rockies because when everything surrounding your favorite hockey team is on fire, sometimes you just got to chill, make the most of the times you choose to chill, choose course like get course light, deliver straight to your door with Instacart, but go into chords like comm slash PHL Y hockey, celebrate responsibly course brewing company golden Colorado. And we're going to look at some Maffee michkov odds right now. I did find it funny in the comments section about like five minutes ago that there was a furious debate on how old I am. This is, yeah, we, I think on the, on the low end, it was 26 on the high end. It was in his 40s to be clear. I am 35. It was born in 1989. I can't imagine guessing high on just like I know how old Charlie is and I sometimes think he's like five years younger like it is very funny to me that someone would guess in his 40s. Yeah, I saw somebody say 40s J 11 was close, 1989. That's very funny. But I want to get to some of these michkov odds right now because if we're talking about him and when he's going to get here in these expectations, you know, we got a, we got a question. I think it was last week about michkov, you know, as we've dubbed it, and apparently the others have michkov mania and like when it's going to hit nationally, and I actually heard Jason Martinez get this question as well. So I'm going to go ahead and guess that the same person posed this question to both shows. Shout out to you for wanting to get your question answered. But like the idea that, you know, but darn, it's the league and it is a league wide phenomenon. You know, they're following them around everywhere. Like that first game was, it was insane. It was like Jordan. But it doesn't seem we're getting that sort of hype with michkov and we answered it and I think I brought it up to you like on another show where it was like, listen, first of all, he ain't here yet to there's always the Russian factor. It's like we just, we love North Americans, you know, and where's, where's hockey media based? Toronto. Yeah. This is just the idea of I'm telling you boys always get the love if michkov scores 80 points and celebrating scores 70, it's going to be, well, celebrities are center and michkov doesn't play defense. Like, so there is that bias that's there to be sure. Absolutely. But like while the hype doesn't seem to be maybe where flyers fans think it should be for a guy who, you know, by all accounts, if I always use this, like if his name was Jeff Carter, would have gone second last year, you know, and probably if he was drafted this year, second again, it's definite possibility. I mean, first there was, I'd be intrigued. I truly don't know, like, in my opinion, he deserved to go second two years ago from a talent standpoint. He was my number two prospect in that draft after Badard, based on everything I watched and everything I researched. This past year, yeah, I would have put him behind Celberini, I think, but I think I would have put him too. I think he's a better prospect than the Demidoff to be clear. And I think Celberini is a little bit better. But there were people who made the case that Demidoff was at his level and that maybe he doesn't come with the same character concerns, maybe he's a little bit bigger, things like that. So I don't think it would have been a foregone conclusion that, you know, that, that, that michkov goes to, I could have, he could have slipped up to four or five, I mean, Demidoff slipped to five. Yeah. I'm not definite, but if I was making my rankings in 2023, he would have been my number two prospect because he was. This year, he would have been my number two prospect. So I don't know where you've been taken, but in terms of where I would have ranked him, yeah, I would have put him to you both years. Well, despite there not seeming to be a ton of like, maybe social media hype, TSN sports net hype, whatever, there is hype in the betting markets specifically for the Calder trophy. Well, right now you can find Matt Vaymichkov at four to one plus 400 to be the Calder Trophy winner. That is the favorite. He is, you know, 50 cents better than Macklin's Celebrini. He's ahead of Logan Stanko and putter Goge there at five to one, Will Smith, I threw in a couple of other guys, but it seems like these four and 500s, these are the ones you really need to focus in on these, these are your favorites. These are your favorites with Lane Hudson in the mix. Yeah. Just because it's Montreal and because if he, you know, you can envision, I'm not saying I'm expecting this, but you can envision a world where Lane Hudson has a Shane Gosses Bear esque rookie here. And if he does, he'll be in the mix, not a guarantee, but he's that same kind of player. He's a very small, dynamic, could put up a ton of points and he's in a big hockey market. So he was going to get a lot of attention if he does really well. So I get why he's in that mix, but yeah, I do think that this top five, you have obviously Mitch Koff and Philly. You got Celebrini in, uh, in San Jose, um, you have Stan Coven and Dallas. Obviously he's the one who's going to be playing for a legitimate contender and then you have go to a Will Smith. Yeah. And that's the, uh, like the four to 500 guys are who I'm really looking at. And I got to tell you, I think of this list of dudes, Mitch Koff might be in the second best situation. Okay. In terms of being able to win this award, um, elaborate. I think Stan Coven should probably be the favorite. Do you? He has really, he's already played hockey at the highest level fair. There's Stanley, could once you, I don't believe obviously this is different for everyone. I just think once you have played in the Stanley cup playoffs, you are not a rookie. Like mentally, mentally and physically, you know exactly what it takes because this is the absolute highest level of hockey. There's nothing higher than Stanley cup playoff hockey. Um, also he's surrounded by a bunch of really good players. I mean, that is true. That is certainly a selling point. I would make the counter argument though that he is that one of the reasons why he would not be my pick to win, win the, the Calder is because he's on a team with a lot of really good players. He's not going to be getting the prime offensive opportunities and the minutes that a celebrating or a Mitch off is going to get like, say, come on, he's, he's going to be a factor and I think he's going to be a very good player. I think he's going to be very strong rookie year, but he might get third line minutes. And if he does, is he going to get enough points to match up with like Mitch Koff and Sellebrini, who are going to be at 20 at night. And that's the like when you look at, oh yeah, but he's doing it for a contender. So his points will have to be true. His points, like even if he plays great hockey, you know, but it's in a third line role, he's going to have to put up comparable numbers because at the end of the day, we know how this works. Right. A lot of dudes just looking at a lot of voters like, listen, there's only so many hours in the day. You're going to depend on the stats and stuff to tell you part of the story, even if you watch a decent number of his games, but you can't watch every game for everyone. And there's a lot of awards people vote a lot. Yeah. So, but his numbers will have to be comparable. I think that's a possibility considering what we saw out of him in the playoffs. It's certainly is. I mean, he's going to be a darn good player. I am certainly past any lingering concerns I had about his size. He's going to be a darn good player, St. Colvin, to be sure. I just, I could envision a world where he finishes with 50 points and like great year. Maybe his underlying metrics are great and he's a key member of a Dallas team is trying to win a cup. But if Maclin cell Berenie finishes with 70 and that's where I wanted to look into and we're going to get into the points total over under in a little bit. But I was like, all right. What numbers do you need to put up to be in contention? So I looked at the last 10 forwards to win the Calder. I'm interested to see. In a full season, the last 10 forwards to win a Calder in a full season, average 66 and a half points. Okay. So it's 52 points in 11, 12 were the fewest, but he was also a great two way player and it was a weaker year. Yes. Yeah. And Barzell's 85 points in 17, 18 were the most seeing the most you basically. Wow. Yeah. That would not have been who I would have predicted. But I guess Mac. David got hurt. Yeah. That's Mac. David had like, I think he played like 39 games or something and then Brandon Manning really took them out on purpose. It was all. And he still finished third and Calder voting back here, like he only played up the game behind ghosts and the ever present Calder contender, I mean, it's, he's unable to repeat, you know, that curse of the rookie of the year, no one's ever done it twice. Shout out more McDonald. But no, you need to basically be in that 60, 65 point range. That's about where everybody falls to win this thing. I never would have guessed like if you would have asked me that question of who, you know, who out of the last 10 forwards win the caller who had the most points, I would not have picked Matt Barzell. But it makes sense. He had a great work here. And some of the best guys didn't like, I guess what, what did Matthew's finish with his first year? 69. Nice. Yeah. I thought that was very, or maybe it was 66. I think it was 69. But yeah. So you need to be in like that 60, 65 point range to really be to have a chance. I thought there'd be more like guys closer to point a game. Yeah. So the last 10 years scoring has been down and it's very hard for rookies to score. Like it's, it's difficult. But then I like looking at these situations, like I think stack oven just because he's surrounded by talent. He's going to get the, even though it's not a traditional hockey market, everyone thinks Dallas is a cup contender. Like he's going to get a good look from a lot of people. But Mishkov, I think is definitely in that conversation, he's a year older than say a celebrating. He's played pro. He is on a team with what you would call a good support system and some good veterans around him. But outside of Travis Connectney, it's not like you look at stack oven and you're like, Oh, well, yeah, man, like he's playing on a third line with Ben and Sagan. You know, like there ain't none of that here. There's nobody like that in on this team that you're going to go, Oh, well, you can just attribute his success to what we're going to say, Scott Lawton is a, oh, his leadership is what got him to 70 points. Like that's insane. It will be his production, but he's got the coach. And I think the supporting cast to at least keep him viable. And then you go, well, it's him doing it. Yeah. Well, I think that's absolutely the case. And it certainly helps the same way I mentioned about Lane Hudson. It certainly helps us in a market that people are going to be paying attention to. Like, look, but Dart was probably going to win a regardless. It didn't hurt that it was in Chicago. Didn't hurt that he's on TV constantly, like that plays into it. And the league is going to be pushing Mitch cough. Maybe, you know, like, for example, compare him to celebrating celebrating is going to be a really good player. I'm super high on him. It's harder to promote someone who plays on the West coast in, in San Jose versus someone who plays in Philly. It just is. It's easier to put a Philly player on national television and build up the hype if the production is living up to expectations to me, the big thing that is going to make or break Mitch coughs candidacy. And this is something I don't know, like, I, I don't know if this is, if this is going to play out in a positive way for the fires, but to me, what's going to make or break it is going to be the power play because I have, I have very few concerns about Mitch coughs ability to be exciting at five on five, given the fact, I mean, towards straight upset it last year, they changed their system in part to maximize my, they Mitch cough skill set. And you have a bunch of guys on this team that, you know, while they're overall points totals that they produced last year may not be eye popping. You know, you have guys like connecting and guys like therapy, you know, guys that can school guys like frost even who have shown they can score at a high level and even strength. The problem has been the power play now can this is where it just comes down to what you believe the biggest problem of the power plays is the biggest problem with the power play. They just don't have the talent. Mitch coughs going to show up. He's going to, you know, not turn the flyers into a great power play because that would be insane. It would be great. It would be insane. But if he can just turn them into a 20% efficiency power play, which would be a massive jump, but it would just get them to like mediocrity in the NHL, if he can get them there, then I think he does score enough points to very much have a good chance to win the Calder. If the real problem with the power play is they have an incompetent coach running it, then it might not matter that Mitch got this talent to the power play might still stink. And then he might just finish with 45, 50 points with almost all the coming and even strength because the coach can't coach his way out of pay back like, and I don't know what the answer is. Maybe it's a little bit of both. Maybe it's more of the talent. Maybe it's more of the coach. What I can say is that if the power play stinks again this year, we know it's the coach because there ain't no more excuses if your power play is still operating at 13% with Mop Bay Mitchov on it. So we're going to find out whose fault this really is this year. Rocky, me and you talking right now, forget everyone else, put the puck on Mitchov stick below the goal line. It's a very simple idea. The guy who is the all time leading scorer in this league, goals and assists, where was his office back there? This isn't rocket science. We have an awesome goal scorer and distributor who can also pick the puck up on a stick and just slam it into the net whenever he wants. Put him back there and let him find the open men. And if he needs to wrap it around, he certainly can do that as well. If he needs to step out in front, take a bad angle shot. He can do that as well. If he needs to fight for a rebound, he can do that as well. Make him the quarterback and put him below the goal line. I've seen it happen before. You're really into this idea. Mark reccke did it. God damn it. Why can't Mop Bay Mitchov? I mean, look, I am definitely not opposed to the idea of setting up a power play from below the goal line. I actually think that the last time a flier's power play was solid, but would have been 2019, 2020. They have run a lot of plays with connect me being below the goal line. So I love that idea. I will say that no team really in the NHL these days completely runs their power play from below the goal line. And that's insane. It would take a an exceptionally creative and like outside the box mind to decide to do that. I'm not sure if Rocky Thompson is that guy because I mean, no one does it. Like everyone does the classic one three one with one of the with the main set up guy on one of the flanks on one of the half walls where there's the right side or left side. Like that's just what everyone does. It's the path of least resistance is what these kids come up learning how to do through juniors through college, whatever. It's just the base formation. So I'm fully expecting them to do that. I'm just saying like Bill, I love the enthusiasm. Just maybe don't get your hopes up that like they're definitely going to do it. I don't want to see Rocky Thompson fired. I want to see him succeed and I am setting him up with the blueprint to succeed. I am by no means an exes and O's guy. If you want your hardcore tape analysis to this dude right over here, that's what he's best at. But all I know is the goalie is looking this way. If you go behind him, he has to turn all the way around to see you. And then guess what? He has no idea where everyone else is and every goalie says that, you know, passes from below the goal line are really tough to stop on the in the eventual shop because how do you track the puck and then they have to then they have to immediately track and it's harder. It's not impossible. It's just harder. It's a little bit harder. Why not make it harder? These goalies are all six four with gigantic pads. The only way to beat them is to fool them. Try to fool them. And with a power play that's lucky to operate at 15 percent, what are you going to get worse? That's right. There is no worse. There's no worse. You have to get Bill Bill. Let's not challenge the game. You can always get worse. You have to get considerably better to be second worst from where you've been the last to say as someone who has covered this era of flyers hockey. I never want to challenge them to get worse because they'll frickin do it. Understandable. Just to finish out the colder trophy conversation, Charlie, the other guys on this list, Celebrini Gochier, Will Smith, all really good talents who definitely have the scoring chops to challenge for the award. Understand it, however, by other young players, what is the toughest thing, consistency? Every coach will say, "What is my young guy need to get better?" "Oh, he needs to just be more consistent." That is the biggest thing. That me tells me many of these young players will go through slumps. And if two or three of these guys go through two, three week slumps, how are they going to put up the scoring numbers to compete? That's what I see. I think Ms. Chavez is in one of the two best situations here to win this year. I think that to me, the key here and what I go by when I'm looking to project Calder winners is the combination of opportunity and then just talent. So it's like, "Do I think this guy is really good and do I think he's going to be the centerpiece of his team?" Like that's why I'm the fiancé in COVID. I love the talent. I'm not convinced he's going to be the centerpiece that he might be more of a middle sixer rather than a top sixer. And if he's a middle sixer, is he going to put up the points necessary? Will Smith as a guy who I would probably write out of my list, not because I don't think he's good. I do. I really like the talent, but he's going to be on the same team as Celebrini. And Celebrini, presumably, is going to get more minutes and he's going to get the prime scoring minutes that Smith will get some of it, like Smith will probably be on the top powerpoint unit, but he's probably going to be too sea to Celebrini's one sea, you would think, most likely, or maybe even three-seat, depending upon what the deal is with Logan Couture. I think he's supposed to come back this year. He was injured, but I think he's supposed to be back. So depending upon that, he could be getting third line minutes. I find it difficult to bet Will Smith over Mackle, Celebrini, like if I'm going to pick a shark, I'm going to pick Celebrini. And then GoTia's interesting. Like, I love the narrative of it coming down to Mitch Cough versus GoTia. I love that narrative. And I do think that Anaheim is going to score goals. He's going to probably be on a line with Carl, either Carl Sin or Zegris. One of those two, if Zegris stays a duck, it's going to be on one of their lines. So he's going to have support. And this is not a team trying to compete, this is a team trying to develop. So I suspect they're just going to let these kids run wild. I could see GoTia score in 30 and making this interesting. And that would be a lot of fun. It would be hell on Twitter, but be a lot of fun. Oh, God. It's just, if it's those two, one, two battling for Rookie of the Year, that is going to be awesome. Like, that's going to be so much god damn fun. In all honesty, I mean, I think, I mean, and again, the odds makers, they do this for a living, they're good at what they do. But like, I think the two favorites are Celebrini and Mitch Cough. I do. I think they are your two, like, there's the two guys I would pick. I might actually consider throwing some money down on Lane Hudson just because of the Montreal factor. And like, if the forwards get hurt, or if guys, you know, the, the Flyers power play still stinks, a Celebrini misses 30 games and Will Smith is just okay in that new role, then like a Lane Hudson could score 50 as a defense fan and sneak in and win it. But I think this in the end is going to be Celebrini, Mitch Cough. Also, and this is just my opinion. I think they're the two most talented players in this list. Like, they, in my mind, are the two best prospects on this list. So I'm going to lean towards them. That's the, it was a little surprising to me to see Celebrini, and again, it's only a few cents, but Celebrini as a bit of an underdog to Mitch Cough here. But I guess it's just pro versus college, maybe age. Well, age, probably a little. I also think, and I, and I know we give the Flyers a lot of shit further lack of talent. But they're not talentless. They have a lack of talent in comparison to the best teams. They have a lot more talent than the fucking shark stew, though. That's like, like, let me, let me read off their, let me read off their lineup from Puck Pete. Okay. We got Logan Couture. Okay. He's 35, but fine. He's good. Tyler Zafoli. He's like a good second line-wear. Michael Granlin, like, wasn't Pittsburgh desperate to trade him a year ago because he stunk Alex Wenberg, like, sure, he's fine. Barclay Gudrow just got claimed off waivers. Luke Conan, Clint Costan, Nico Sturm, Carl Grunstrom, like some of these guys are creative players. Because he's not, he's not going to have a lot of support. Yeah, they're now Will Smith, because presumably he's going to make the team too. It's not going to have a lot of support there, to be honest. So I can see why people who are running the betting services look at and are like, okay, Mitchoff's going to play with Travis Connectney and Chonkateria, Morgan Frost, and Joel Faraby, and guys that are like established good players, and Celebrini might have Barclay Gudrow on his wing. Yeah, I can see why they might think that Mitchoff might have a little bit more support. Now if you're maybe looking to make a bunch of these bets, you probably want to also be in a pretty sound financial situation, you know? And I got to tell you, as much as, oh, well, the safest, smartest place to put my money isn't a big bank, obviously. That's the way to go. Not so fast. Not so fast. You can get candy from classics like peat rings and starlight mints, to gummy butterflies and sour worms. Oh, I do love them sour worms, plus nuts and trail mixes, packed with vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, fiber and protein, all that stuff. Oh, yeah. I'm going to snack on something mindless. Why not make it kind of okay for you? And then the good stuff is well popcorn, there's buttery, there's sweet and salty, cheddar, sea salt, all sorts of different flavors for popcorn lovers. They have beef jerky, granola, granola, granola and pantry staples like honey and seasoning. So if you got that snack attack, get yellow market delivered same day or buy online or pick up in store, go to radaid.com/shop to order. That's the right aid yellow market. You can't go wrong. All right. So this is something I kind of found interesting, Charlie. Okay. Mishkov, the favorite over over celebration to win the Calder trophy, the rookie of the year. And while lots of things go into it, like you mentioned, Landis Cog, although he only had the 52 points. So that's the fewest of the last 10 forwards to win it in a full season. Two-way player, you know, a leader, all that stuff. But at the end of the day, this comes down to production. You can't watch every game. Guys, look at the points, totals and go on. He scored more. He wins. Mishkov over under right now 46 and a half points. Now it is juice to the over, it's favored to go over minus 140 under is plus 110. Right. So if he goes under, you make a decent profit there. They're expecting him to score more than 47 points. That is the expectation. However, celebrating is at 52 and a half and it's minus 110 each way, which is basically just, we think it could go either way. It's basically even, but the book gets their juice no matter what. It's a little surprising. And I know you're not a big betting guy, so we're not going to turn this into just like a sports book conversation. I can try to keep up. But you understand math, like they expect celebrating to hit 52 at least. They expect Mishkov to go over 46 and a half, but, you know, his total is set below that. How do you square these things? Like, yeah, we expect celebrating to score more, but we think this guy is the favorite. Is it just the way he's going to play out, exciting he's going to be like, what do you think makes Mishkov the favorite here? I mean, it's not that much of a favor. They're pretty darn close. Yes. It's very close. It might potentially be, you know, possibly there's a thing. There's a theory that Mishkov might be more, uh, have a higher propensity for injury that maybe he will have a higher point per game rate, but won't score as many points. That could play into it a little bit. Maybe, and again, like I'm speaking from someone, the perspective of someone who doesn't give a shit about sports gambling, but like maybe they just want more people to bet on the Mitch Koff line because like we literally have people in our chat throwing out the call letters for Mitch Koff's flight that we don't even know he's on, like these, these sports books know that flyers fans are going to bet an insane amount of money on anything with the words might be Mitch Koff on it. Maybe they're just trying to facilitate as much money in the pod as possibly. That does make a ton of sense. Like make him the favorite because one flyers fans are going to bet him. Yeah. Two, it's like, oh, this guy's favorite of herself. I know. Celebrini. Yeah. Oh shit. I'm going to take the fate. Like there is always so much of like the favorite betting. You see, like, yeah, he is probably going to score more than at 46 points. Let's juice that. So if he does, we're not like taking a huge loss here. Yeah. Like so I do, I do see it from that perspective. I just found it odd that like he's the favorite, but he's like his total is less. I don't know. And then like, I don't know all the ins and outs like, Oh, well with the juice, it's actually he's expected to score more. I'm not great, but I have a general understanding. I just found it funny, but I bring all this up to be like, we got that question about when is the Mitch Cobmania going to hit and you know, when he does something, like his first Michigan goal is when it's, are you, are you implying that Mitch Cobmania hasn't already hit? Nationally. Oh, nationally. Okay. Okay. And while maybe it hasn't hit nationally, at least the sports books, like the one I used for these odds, in terms of regular season points totals, it's not like they have the money entirely. That shit will hit everywhere, you know, September, but for right now, in the middle of July, there's five dudes listed, McCar, Badard, McDavid, Celabrini, and that famous curve. It's hit the sports books. Like there is at least demand, like someone is on the phone with fans are bonkers. There is someone on the phone with customer service going, I want to bet that famous Mitch Cobman, what odds will you give me and they'll go, all right, shit, we'll list it and see how many people. Yeah, like that's how these things happen is people who like to bet these deep futures are like, I'm going to bet him, yep, give me some odds and they go, all right, here you go. I guess we're giving the odds and something tells me they've got a lot of calls about Mitch Cob and they're like, well, fuck, he's the favorite then I just think the excitement level is so high and look, I'm not saying that Philadelphia is the largest, you know, world city in North America, it's obviously not. But it's up there. There are a lot of flyers fans, a lot of Philadelphia fans and a lot of Philadelphia fans scattered across the country. Yes. Like I know just from our discord and just from interacting with listeners and viewers of the show that a lot of these people like when I'll post like, hey, who's coming out to this game or this event or whatever, it's like, man, I wish I could, but I live in Calgary and it's like, really? Yeah. But they do. Yeah. I think the Kansas or something, like people, flyers fans and really fill it up with fans in general, but flyers fans specifically are nationwide, like, there is a lot of them. And I know a lot of them went into hibernation because the team's been embarrassing. But this is the first time that people are able to get excited about something. Of course, the sports books that are paid to figure this stuff out are realizing that there is a ton of excitement around off a Mitch Cob and then we're gonna take advantage of it. Yeah. And like, I know, I think the person who sent the question to us and Merti this about when this conversation is going to be more national, pretty sure he's in BC, like, there's fans everywhere. Yeah. The flowers are, they were at least until recently kind of like almost Raiders-ish where it's like, yeah, we have a hardcore following here, but there's, think about the bullies and like, we're going to talk about something in a little bit, slap shot. Yeah. Like this is, they played a brand of hockey that spoke to a lot of people. Like Dan Corsillo knocked out his front teeth on the front of his bicycle so he could look like Bobby Clark. And like Dan Corsillo is a lot closer to our age than he is bullies age. And the thing you have to remember too, and this is something that I do find very fast and about the sports fan psyche, is that if you're a diehard fan of a team, like, and you really are all in, like you bleed orange, you're a die-art flyers fan, and you don't live in Philly or near Philly. You are going to be even more willing to ride out the bad times as opposed to someone who's a die-art in the city. Because if you're a die-art in a city, it's like, ah, you know, whatever, like, I'll just follow the Phillies, they're better, like, don't put the flyers in the back sparrow. Eagle season, man. When they get good, I'll go back on being full on flyers fans. If you're a flyers fan in San Francisco, like, that's part of your identity. If you're a die-art, and like, who cares if they've been bad for 15 years, I'm a freaking flyers fan. My friends know me, like, no, I'm not the Sharks fan, I'm not, like, yes, or I'm not the Niers fan. I'm the Eagles fan, and I'm going to deal with all the shit that I take for being an Eagles fan in enemy territory, because it's going to be all that much sweeter when they turn the tide and get good. Like, one thing I'll equate this to, and this is a conversation I have with a, um, it was an NHL employee. This was in, I want to say, like, the early part of the 2010s. It was during the period when the Islanders really stuck, and their attendance numbers were in the toilet. It was, you know, they didn't know what the stadium was going to be and what not. And I remember in a conversation, it'd be like, why hasn't there been any talk? Like, there was when Pittsburgh was in the toilet about moving the team or about contracting the team or whatever. Why don't I hear anything like that? And what he told me was, here's a big part of it. Yes, you look at the attendance numbers in, you know, wherever they're playing, whether it's Brooklyn or NASA, whatever, and their shit, absolutely. Go ahead and look at the road attendance numbers. The road attendance numbers are really, really good because there were a lot of Islanders fans scattered across the country that whenever the Islanders are coming to town, they'd all go. And all of the awaits, all, all of the home teams in other places would get a boost when the Islanders played because they were a national fan base, flyers, it's kind of the same thing where like there's a lot of people that are across the country that are diehard flyers fans that show up at flyers, if not because they travel from Philly to Minnesota, but because they live in Minnesota and they never stop being a flyers fan. And like that's the, especially when you talk about like, you know, the Sun Belt teams, like what are we? We're the Northeast, just like the Islanders, they, and they had their run in the 80s where they were a legit, you know, they won four in a row. And they were bad for years, but, but the fans that they generated from those 80s teams, they stuck. And you also have the snowbirds and everything like a lot of people leave the Northeast and go to Arizona. Go to Dallas, like go to warmer places and those fans are there. It's kind of the whole idea behind Slap Shop. Before we talk about that for a second, I want to just thank all of our awesome diehards. We couldn't do the show without everyone. If you're not a diehard, go to all PHLY.com to sign up. Very much appreciate everyone out there. We could not run a PHLY or all city without our diehard, so thank you very much. We always can. It's very simple for us to do this. I don't know how, but we do. But the rest of this off season, from now through like August, is going to be a bit of a slog in terms of content. And this is something I've wanted to do for years and now that we have a daily show where I get to do whatever the hell I want. We're going to do some movie reviews, Chuck. Hey. And I want to start with Slack Hockey related. Hockey, hockey movie reviews. We're going to go through a bunch of hockey movies, one a week, talk about them, do some side content based on them. Now my favorite one is Slap Shot. Everyone knows this about me. I'm wearing a Syracuse Bulldog shirt right now, for instance. Oogie. Now, I want to know first and foremost, Chuck, what works best for you in terms of day to do this on? Because at first I was like, "Oh, we'll do it over the weekend." But like weekends for, I know I don't want to spend them thinking about work. I would agree. So like maybe we do this on a week night and then talk about it the next day on the show. You know, I like things that rhyme, all that stuff. So Tuesday, reviews day, I think works. What works for you though in terms of like what do you think the best day to watch the movie and then talk about it the next day? I could do Tuesdays. All right. Yeah. Monday night, watch a movie. If it's one I haven't seen, watch it for the first time. It's what it's what I have seen like Slapshot, just a refresh view to make sure I'm ready to chat. All right. So I think we're going to start this tomorrow then because right now Slapshot is available on Netflix. And I want to talk, I'm going to put it on to talk about it. Honestly, like if I just put on Slapshot, he was going to be like, "Again." I'm like, "Huh, it's for work." Yeah. I got to do this. This research. I got to do this for work. So we are going to talk about this tomorrow. Kelly's going to join us. I've already told her that this is the plan. So she'll be in on it as well. So that's this week. And we'll talk about it tomorrow. In terms of other hockey movies though, where do we want to go? Like, I'm going to put it out to people if there's one we don't talk about, we'll definitely consider it. But you mentioned Mr. Alaska before we started the show today. That is one of the best, I think underrated hockey movies. I definitely want to, definitely want to discuss what else are you thinking here? Well, I think the Mighty Docs are obvious. We could do Miracle, but everyone's seen Miracle. We certainly could though. I think Goon is the new Slapshot. It's obviously not at that level. But it's an entertaining movie. It's an excellent film. And it's for the next generation that wanted their Slapshot. Absolutely. It's funny, right now, Goon 2, I think, is on Netflix. I've never seen Goon 2. I've never seen Goon 2. I've seen it. Okay, I did not watch Goon 2. But Goon 2 won is good. It's great. I love that one. I have seen this out over the next couple of weeks. I want to do Young Blood because I've never seen it. Yeah, I've never seen it. Yeah, I know that's going to be. Maybe I saw it when I was young and just don't remember because I can't imagine, like, there was a hockey movie that I didn't rent at some point from, like, the library. But we'll see. If we do the Mighty Docs, I will say, I refuse to watch D3 ever again. All right. Well, that's D3. They go to the prep school. That's three, right? Yeah. When, like, they basically had Dave Hacks' all-set coach. Yeah, Amelia wasn't there. He's barely at it. Yeah. First-store classics, the third one, that has its moments, but I could take it to leave it. I could probably do without that then. Do we watch the dux show? Hockey Conway. Do we watch the dux show? Between that and suresy, maybe. I don't know. So we'll work all this out. But tonight, watch Slapshot and we are going to talk about it tomorrow. I'm trying to line up some good side content to go along with this one. That's in the works for me. But you'll see it when it drops if we're able to work that out. But tonight is Slapshot and hit us up on Twitter with the other ones that you want us to watch and review in the coming weeks because we got days, man. You know, 60 minutes a day, five days a week, and really, it's like 65, 70 minutes a day. We're yet to have a show that doesn't pass two o'clock, I think. Exactly. So that's it. Do we have anything else we want to talk about today? Get a super chat. Oh, the super chat. Super chat. She puts it up on the screen for me and I still forget. But yes, let's get to the super chat. Start with our buddy Gary B. Happy Mishkop Monday, everyone. Happy Mishkop Monday to all who celebrate Gary. Every day is Mishkop day. It is. No, it's. This is a never ending. It's Groundhog's Day. Exactly. It's what it is. Exactly. We're all just trapped in the. It's Mishkop Monday. I'll just trapped in the clock like a. It's Mishkop Monday. Again. Again. All right. Happy to you as well. Gary from JH Charlie, have you started taking Russian lessons? No. I'm not going to learn Russian. Sorry. I think that's a slippery slope. You start learning Russian. Next thing you know, someone's knocking on your door, you know, sir, can you tell us why you're doing this? And it's like, I want to talk to a 19 year old, like, sir, now a whole other. Ouch. Now a whole other group of people are knocking on your door. At least 19. Yeah. That's fine. All right. JH. Thank you for the question. And now Gary Peterson asks, Hey, fellas, big fan. And this may have been addressed. If the trend is that NHL offices are trending towards big beefy demon and Jones loves big beefy demon, why would they trade Risto? It's a reasonable question because it is no secret that Keith Jones loves. Risto Leinen, anybody that watched the many, many broadcast, he did a flyer, sabers games and how excited he would get Risto Leinen would do anything can attest to the fact that Keith Jones absolutely loves Risto Leinen. However, I think there is a consensus. And I think Jones even like probably grudgingly agrees with this that while Risto types are needed, Risto Leinen specifically is overpaid for what he provides and he's on the older side. Like he's going to be a long-term piece, you know, for the next 10 years, because he's in his late twenties. I also think the big underlying reason why they are more willing to trade Risto Leinen is because they think they have a younger, much cheaper Risto Leinen coming in Hunter McDonald who they absolutely love. I think that is, that is low key, a big part of why they're open to trading Risto, because they think they have a much cheaper, younger Risto coming. Like, yeah, I think he needs a door of, I think you need to hand it. Like these guys are, Risto is not that good. Yeah, he's not at all. I think it's Hunter McDonald and 5.1 million. Those are the reasons. Yeah. Yeah. I don't think they're going to give him away. No, I don't think so either. I think they value him enough to be like, "We're not going to goss this bear him. We're not going to..." Oh, no, I would be shocked that they like added a picture. We're not going to wave him. I don't think they're going to give him away. But if the opportunity presented itself where they could add assets or make the judgment in their mind that we have gotten better for the future somehow, they will make that true. Yeah. But it does hinge quite a bit on Hunter McDonald. It's an interesting question though, Gary. I will say because you're right, I definitely get the sense that the fliers want the defense to be bigger than it is. And I certainly know for a fact that Keith Jones is very much a fan of Risto's line. I also think that the combination of McDonald and the fact that objectively speaking, and I'm saying this is someone who has been pleasantly surprised with what they've gotten from Risto line and on the ice. He's not a five on five liability anymore. He's not a $5 million dollar your player. He's just not. And this is the better Risto and he's still not anywhere close to being worth the money they're paying. That's why that contract was so stupid. It's like they got a positive outcome and it's still a dramatic overpay. Imagine if like the bad outcome would have happened, he might be like the worst contract in hockey. I mean, you know, it's put him in that bumper on the power play and trade him in November. Exactly what I said do with Atkinson that they refuse to do and then look what happened. You had to buy him out, cash in, do what you can, and then get rid of ASAP. But we'll see. They'll probably name him Captain or something and then scratch it. Then it'll be okay to scratch it.
