Megalomanské sportovní akce patřily k minulému režimu stejně neodmyslitelně jako pionýrský kroj a rudý šátek. Konaly se každých pět let. Vystoupit na Strahově byla velká prestiž a životní zážitek.
Spartakiády byly svým rozsahem na světě jedinečné. První celostátní spartakiáda se konala na Strahovském stadionu v Praze v červnu 1955. „Tyto masové gymnastické přehlídky měly symbolizovat jednotu a sepětí lidu s komunistickou stranou. Ta do nich také investovala nemalé prostředky,“ říká historik Adam Havlík.
