Here's our telephone number of Cap and that only is it a Deal Breakers Thursday. But also it is a game day Thursday as well. The first preseason game for the Bears is tonight. Our cover starts at five. Right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN 1000. Excited. Looking forward to just seeing the guys take the field in pads. There won't be any of the starters out there. But guys like Austin Booker who I'm hearing is looking really good in camp. These guys are all playing for jobs. Now I think he's on the team. I think he knows he's on the team. But there are guys tonight that they're gonna have their position coach tell them, Jonathan, go out there and play your tail off because everyone in the league watches the film of every player. So whether you make this football team, you're playing for all 32 teams tonight. Go out and play your tail off. It'll be cool just to see the effort you get from some guys. I wanna talk on the show today about the word expectations because on our March up to the first preseason games into the season for the Bears, we've talked a lot about expectations and what we as Bears fans expect for the team. Courtney Cronin was on on sportsman like the show that comes on before us between five and seven here on ESPN 1000. And gave a reaction to the show about expectations. Are they too high for the Bears? - I think for Michelle, it's that I'm with you. I think the expectations are out of control. I think some people have seen this and they're like, okay, CJ Stroud part two, 10 win seasons, lock it in. Let's not forget they play in the NFC North. There's Green Bay, there's Detroit you gotta worry about. And it might take Caleb Williams some time as a quarterback in the NFL to learn how to put all these pieces together, despite having a pretty favorable schedule, weeks one through 10. So that's the one that I'm more in agreement on that we need to temper our expectations. Like, how about they win a playoff game first before we start locking them into the Super Bowl talk? - Expectations are in the eyes of the ball holder. Are they not, Cap? - Yes, that's correct. And for some people, certain expectations may be lower than my expectations or beliefs with this football team can and might be if they get blessed by the football gods with good health. But you're exactly right. Expectations are in the eye of the beholder. My question for Michelle and Evan and Courtney would be, okay, what are unrealistic expectations? Because I think Courtney believes she wrote it. This is a contending football team. They're not a rebuild football team. As far as the previously banned Michelle Smallman, what is her level of too much expectation? Is she think they're a six-win team, seven-win team? Let's go, Michelle, come on. Go out there and say what you think this team's gonna be. If you think they're gonna be a flop, then say it. That's my question. What is too high in expectation? To say they're gonna win the Super Bowl? Yeah, that's crazy talk. It would be awesome, cool. But that's why they're a long shot at 44. They were 45 to one when I put my ticket in. So that's my question. What is unrealistic? And what do you truly believe this team's gonna be? - See, when it comes to expectations, Cap, the way I look at it, when you've gone from three wins to seven wins, your expectations is, okay, what's the next step? The next step is to find a way into the playoffs, and then you find out what happens. I can pull the curtain back for everybody and let you know that there are some, even before we get to this game tonight, that said in June and May and April, that the bears are going to win the NFC, or the bears should be the favorite to win the Super Bowl. And the reason why some in our business do that is because they wanna be way ahead of the curve, because what if the lightning strikes for the Chicago Bears and they were able to exceed everyone's expectations and get to the top? Well, they're shining brightly. Of course, they also win because if the bears don't get there, well, Dan Orlowski, you said that they would, oh, Rich Eisen, you said that they would, either way they win, Cap, because they say, all the bears are gonna, you know, pie in the sky, they can win the NFC, not just the North, win the NFC, or they can compete for the Super Bowl. We have to weigh the pros and cons and be level-headed about this gap. Pros and cons, all the time. When it comes to the pros, what's the number one thing? I love the offensive weaponry of the Chicago Bears. We've talked ad nauseam about how we've never seen an off-season like this, as far as you're taking care of a rookie in Caleb Williams and Roma Dunezay. Two guys that got along before they were drafted together. They're playing, they're throwing the football around on the plane, and when they got off the plane, to the draft, right? So they were already friendly in the same draft class. They didn't know, they didn't know they were actually gonna be teammates, but they were cool with one another. From there, you took care of DJ Moore. We are discussed, DJ Moore being taken care of with a four-year contract. So he's part of the future of this team. Ken Allen, a solid veteran that's on this team. How long he's gonna be here? I don't know, but the point is, though, that's a good thing that he's on this team. But then you get other offensive linemen to try to help your issues that you had in the offensive line. You added a tight end. And you also improved on your running back room by adding DeAndre Swift. So the offensive weaponry is there. Imagine Jake Cutler having this. - Right. - Right. AJ, we're gonna sign you this big extension. Here's your franchise receivers that he's had in his career there. Johnny Knox, Devon Hester. And Devon is the greatest returner ever. As a wide receiver, he was a great returner. - Yes. - Sucked as a wide receiver. - Just remember, Moose and Muhammad coming over on the line before the ball snapped. - No, Devon, you need to be right here. Right here. - Moved him in place. - Yeah. - You recall this? - Yes. - Moved him in place. - Yes. - No, no, no. This is the slot you're supposed to be. Oh, okay, thanks. - Yeah, thanks, appreciate it. - Oh, God. - I mean, you go back and look at the rosters. And again, I made it clear. I couldn't stand Jake Cutler as our quarterback. He was thrilled when he was finally gone. But he also had 72 offensive coordinators, a crappy offensive line that they didn't put enough effort into. Yeah, we got old and we don't need anybody else. - We're good. - Sure. - Back in like '06 when Rex was here and they had Ruben Brown and a couple of the, that was a good offensive line. - Studs. - And then hey, Jake, you don't really need any receivers here. You got this. - Sure. - What? - Mm-hmm. - So now Caleb has all the tools to work with. He's just gotta learn and keep growing. - We talked a lot in the summer to you and I about cornerstones on this franchise. And so more and more when we think about Montes Sweat, even though he's new to the team, he's one of them. And also taking the bull by the horns is Jalen Johnson. We talked about the dominance he had last year. And I look overall at the secondary and say, "Man, from Tyree Stevenson to Jalen Johnson "to Collar Gorn to Kevin Byard, "I mean, you have a solid secondary there. "An issue with the Bears a couple of years ago. "And now, again, based on paper and based on the potential, "you have a lot of playmakers that they can "turn the field for you. "And that's a good thing." - 100%. And I think it's super cool to see the culture that Ryan Pauls and Matt Eberfluz have put together. DJ Moore was telling the media that when they announced his extension to the team, champagne, celebrating, he said every guy in there was going crazy, mobbing him. Dude, that's culture. That is, when did I get my, that's being happy for the guy next to you. We're all in this together and that man earned that. I think it's awesome. - In a lot of ways, this team is kind of like Noah Zark, it's got two of everything. 'Cause you take a look, you double down on a running back, you double down on tight end, you got a number of offensive linemen, you look at your defense and you have a number of guys that can make a difference getting to the quarterback. The linebackers are sound, sound. I look for another step for Sanborn, another step for him, where he could be the middle linebacker of the future at some point. - Maybe. - At some point. - Maybe. - But we'll see. But then there's camp piece, camp piece. How many times, either in Wisconsin or in Bourbon A, where we were there, it's like, oh God, there's some issues here. There's a problem with a contract, or there's a problem with injury, or there's some players, or some people that are upset here at camp. Oh God, you're gonna go in a season like that. Camp piece. - It's amazing. - Piece. You got Dallas going every day. - Anything on deck on an extension? - No. - Anything on CD, let, no. Anything on Mike apart? - No. Then they had a guy blowin' ACL yesterday in Dallas, defensive lineman. - Yeah. - Like, look around, Cincinnati, they're all in. This is their chance to win a Super Bowl, they think. Where's Trey Hendrickson? Well, he's upset with his contract. Where did your Mark Chase upset with his contract? T Higgins final year, he signed the tender, and he's outta here. Okay, good luck. - I'll put it this way. This is the annual, "What's Wrong with Nate Davis?" Part of our show. If that's the only issue, or question mark you have on your football team, then you're pretty chill. - That's why you went and spent your fifth round pick on Ryan Bates, plug and play, here you go. He may not be at all, bro, but he's a solid football player. - The other side of it, Cap, is I draw a line between the pros and cons. You know my biggest con coming into the season. You already know. - Eberflus. - It definitely is, Matt Eberflus has a lot to prove. From a game day operation standpoint. Game day operation. - I don't think you have question. Once you got some good intel, like I did, from what goes on in the room, and the guy's being at his house, and players telling us how much they love playing for the student, he holds them. Great. - Nope. - No problem. - You're like, okay, that's better. We thought it's good. Your problem has been fourth in inches, kick the field goal, and take the lead. Nope, we screwed that one up. Take the time out. Nope, we missed on that one. Coach, what are you doing here? That's, you need a cleaner operation. - I would like to have that, because you have some of the best athletes in the National Football League. Let them be able to flourish. Let them be able to execute. Don't take it away from them. There's certain times in his tenure where it's like you took it away from them, 'cause of your decision-making. You didn't call the time out, you spoke. Those things matter. - Right. - It's all in the players, but also from the coaching standpoint, don't do little things to take the win away from your players. You can't do that. - If you go back to the Denver game, fourth in less than a yard, you've got a kicker who's really good, Cairo Santos. You just extended him and paid him a bunch of money. It's a makeable field goal. It's not like a 58-yarder. The game is tied at this point. Take the lead, no force them to have to go down the field to beat you, they need a touchdown, to tie you, they gotta get a field goal. Nope, we're gonna go for it with a less than perfect offensive line. And guess what, Justin gets stopped. Now, all they have to do is go, what, 30 yards, 40 yards? - Yes. - Field goal, see you later, thanks for coming. That's just a stupid coaching decision. - Yes, it was. - And remember we argued with him? He was not, that was the last time we got a bite at that apple. - Yep, that was all for him. - Coach, thanks for coming up. Appreciate it, hope you're well. Start right there. Let's go into that decision. Why would you not kick the field goal? - Yep, and that was all. - He didn't even ask me how my evening went. (laughing) - That's why, coach. - Coach wants to talk, want to talk football? We try to talk football. - Correct. - Okay. - We went right to the football. What everyone wanted and no. - And then Jay Moore, what happened was, keeping it real went wrong. That's what happened. - That's it. He ended up by waddling. (laughing) - That's what happened. - Yeah, give me off of those. - So there's one. Also, it is fair to question the rookie quarterback and the rookie wide receiver. No matter how much hype and how much is real about these two in college, it does matter that it's a step up in class that you're in the NFL. You're on the big stage now. It's cool when you're with your teammates. It's cool that you're talking to the media. It's cool to be on hard knocks. But when the bell rings, what are you gonna do? Better be ready to go. I mean, that matters. Listen, I don't worry about Caleb Williams as far as his spotlight because he played a USC. He knows what that's like. He was covered like a pro in Los Angeles. He was. 'Cause every bit of scrutiny was on him. All those losses, that bad offensive line, the downturn of USC, I was on Caleb. He was front page headlines. He was a pro in LA. And by the way, in USC, you know, with that particular school in Los Angeles, that is the pro team. No shot at the Rams and Chargers, but it really is the pro team. Everyone focuses on USC. That's their football team in Orange County. So that's a big question mark. How will they be able to handle it? And then of course, the tenure teams of Green Bay, Detroit and Minnesota. 'Cause they've been there and the barriers have not. Especially the Packers. Let's start there with Jordan Love. Taking care of financially. Oh man. They believe in him now and in the future. They believe that this team can be able to take another step, Green Bay. Detroit is the class of the division and one of the best teams in the conference. Bears have to be able to overcome that. Albert Breyer has scared us to depth about Minnesota. - Yep. - It's like, we-- - Oh, they're not achieving, you guys realize. - We set them aside and all of a sudden he goes, "Well, J.J. McCarthy may not be good right away, but take a look at the infrastructure." Like, "Oh yeah, they're actually pretty good in a lot of areas." - Yeah. - 'Cause they're 'cause of the tenure. - Have you seen the J.J. McCarthy camp film? - I have seen it. - Yeah. - Where these-- - We're mainly an assistant coach and he air mails them for like 12 yards. - It's been apparently really rough. By the way, just quickly, Adam Schefter reporting. The Buccaneers have made Tristan Worfs the highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history. So, people who were witch casting a Tristan Worfs Bears trade, that is over. - Yeah, Albert Breyer said, "That is absolutely no shot that's gonna happen." So, how much did he get? 140, is that what I'm seeing? - Yep, 145 years, 140. - Yeah, so there you have it. - So, that's what elite left tackles cost. - Did I miss any cons? Even if lose the rookies, the teams that the bears have to face in the division? - No, I don't think so. - I don't think so. - I try to be fair on both sides of it. - Yeah. - Because the pros are what they are. Like, all the momentum, the camp piece, the defensive key players for Matti Refluse, the offensive weaponry. Then of course, there's Ira Fluse and what he's gonna do in year three. And then, you know, again, the rookies, how well will they be able to perform? And then of course, the opponents of the Bears have to face. - By the way, two of the three highest paid offensive linemen, left tackles are in our division. And neither one place for us. - Nope. - Tristan Worf's 28.1 million a year to play left tackle. He's on the box. And then Penaisool just signed for 28 million. And Christian Derasal, the Vikings, 26 million. - Taylor Decker just signed a deal too, didn't he? - Yeah, he's not top five offensive linemen by salary, but he got paid a lot, yeah. - Hey, but Austin Booker says he's having a really hard time getting by Braxton Jones, real strong hands. - Okay. - Braxton Jones cracked that number. Who knows? - You know what, if you can find your left tackle, legit left tackle in the fifth round. - Fifth round, brother. - God bless you. - Hey, the Bears got Richard Dent in the eighth round. - Yeah, it happens. - You find gems occasionally. - So what is the reasonable expectations for you as a Bears fan? Fernando's on the south side on Cap and Jhood Fernando. Good morning. - Good morning, gentlemen. Great to be with you. I love your work. - Appreciate you. - I love your work. - Thank you. - I want to double it down on this season. - Oh, guys, coolest flus. As we take us back a few steps, we're three team wins, 17 wins, and now we're seeing double digits. If memory serves me correctly, everybody and their mother and their community, everybody is like Bears double digit wins playoffs and we're supposed to take them north and never give it back. You remember that? Well, that didn't happen too well. How did that go? How did that go? It's the same thing this year. And this is what I mean by rinse and repeat. What changed? Offensive coordinators, right? There is no accountability at the head coach at all. We decided to fire people and keep coolest flus running the show. First orders, that's the worst coach in the NSC North and bottom five in the entire football league. - Okay, that is fair about the North. It's fair. No question about it. - No doubt. But hold on, Fernando, hang on. We're having a conversation. - Yeah, you just said, what did they do that they didn't do? Everything's rinse and repeat. They have a new quarterback. They brought in Keenan Allen, Roma Dunesay, multiple additions to their offensive line and all pro safety, Kevin Byron. Do you want me to keep going? - Cody, that's why I was interrupted to finish my statement. The point is everybody's not playing because people have something wrong with their angle or Nate Davis is personal. Or Braxton Jones is nowhere to be found out one-on-one. Let's talk about the fact that are really happening. Why isn't he playing this week or any starters? Knowing we need reps. Regardless, 40-something is 60-something, playing 45%, that's great. We need that because what did Flus and them do before? Not play them. How did week one workout, Kat? Started the season, how that felt? That was a smack in the face. How do you think it was the last game in the season against Green Bay? 14-19 loss. - And that's why Justin is no longer here. - And the point of the story is the coaches is what starts this. I have no doubt in my mind, their chin straps up and they're working hard as heck. I've been to training camp. I've been to a private event. I'm a season ticket older. It's cool. Let's see the product on the field and it starts with actually just who cares. You know, William should have played a day, even if he has a ball three times off. It's the headset, it's the communication, it's the vibe, the live, everything. - Okay, I'll agree to disagree with that. You do realize no team has played their starting quarterback since 2015, that was Teddy Bridgeward. - No team has a Trent Williams. No team and I's offensive line has anybody remotely ranked. Why would they not play? - Because there's, again, movement's happening. Day two of the pads, buddy. Were you not scratching your head? I'm a ball-dead guy as well. What is happening? Nate Davis is out now changing the guard at center. What are we doing guys? Oh, this is the process. This is the can answer of, yep. We gotta see what we got in different packages. Gosh, two days in a row, all those flags. But it got cleaned up on the day that nobody was there to see it. That just doesn't add up. - Oh, the media was there. The media was there to see it. - Yeah, Fernando, we're pretty to your telephone call. See, we talked about pros and cons, right? Then we just talk about that? - Yes. - Pros and cons. He went right to the top and went right after Mattie Refluse. - Fair enough. - And he's right. - And he's terrible. - Fair. - Fair. - That's absolutely fair. The only pushback that I'll have Fernando up from your call is that when Ryan Polls says our goal is to take the North and never give it back. Any organization, any business, they're supposed to have a mission statement and supposed to have goals. You're supposed to have goals. He didn't say that as soon as I take the job, we're gonna take the North and they're gonna give it back. There's a goal. The goal is to be able to beat Green Bay, to be able to beat Minnesota and Detroit and be at the top of the division. That's a goal. Absolutely. There's nothing wrong with stating your goals. That's the goal. - Fair enough. - So the idea that it was gonna happen as soon as you, did you see the organization? There's no way that in year one, the Bears are gonna be at the top of the North. You see that team, there's no shot. They couldn't do that. But the rest of it, when he talks about the head coach and talks about you were flusifying, some of the storylines you're giving is the storylines from last year. You're talking about Nate Davis, just like last year, whatever happened with Nate Davis personally, he was on the field when the season started. - He was. - So, you know, I can understand why there might be some pessimism because he's one of these guys that says, show me, totally fair. - Totally fair. - You know, I think he is over the top negative about certain things, but the Hebrew flu's criticism, totally fair. Now live in Illinois, sign up today, and the users get $100 in bonus bets with any bets. - Sportsbook. - Bet. - Bet. - Bet. - Bet. - We say good morning to J.W. and early. - Good morning, boys, on a football Thursday. Football back on our radios, on our television screens tonight, the Bears playing in Canton, the Hall of Fame game, how are we feeling? - We're great. - Awesome, man. - Football every Thursday till win? January February? - Well, not every Thursday till February, but every Thursday until the NFL playoffs, I'm pretty sure. - Dan Arlovsky, fact. - Caleb Williams will have the best season for a quarterback in Bears history. - What a stretch. - But we're the ones that are over the top. - According to Courtney and Michelle and everybody, I'm a little angry, right? - I think they're also talking about Dan Arlovsky, who also called Matthew Stafford, the best quarterback in the NFC this week. So maybe take this one with a grain of salt. - Well, then there's that bowl game that'll probably be on that Thursday too in January. - Is the house right? - Sure. - Are they going that late in the schedule now? 'Cause usually January, you get the New Year's six on that weekend and then the national title game of the following Monday. - That's called the SEC Championship game. - Regardless, we're-- - Georgia and Alabama. - Or Clemson or somebody. - All right, the Buck of a Town Ball, ha ha. Could be that too, who knows? - Never know. - Here's J-Norling Shay. - All right, let's get started with shot and row shot. Moving on, DJ Moore talked about his extension, and it seems like he's already putting some pressure on somebody else to get a deal done. What's up with this? - I already did that now. I did that yesterday. I was like, man, listen, what's your number? Let's get it done. And I mean, I'm gonna leave his number out of it, but I think we can get it done. So, it should be interesting. - Yeah, DJ Moore campaigning already for Keenan Allen to be extended by the Bears. Shot or no shot, now is the time for the Chicago Bears to give an extension to Keenan Allen. - That's no shot. He's got to prove that he can stay on the field. He was struggling with hamstring stuff in warm weather San Diego or LA. And I wanna see him have a great season, get rewarded. Period. - Yeah, that's a no shot. Taking care of DJ Moore is one thing because that's the cornerstone of your wide receiver room for now. If a doomsday takes it over, that'd be a great battle, right? But ultimately, DJ Moore's the guy. Keenan Allen, again, you're not trying to break the bank for a Keenan Allen cap. What you're trying to do is you wanna get younger at these positions as well. I'd love for that money to be allocated to someone on the defensive line. That'd be great at some point down the line. Keenan Allen, or probably not? - We'll see. - Probably not. - You know what else is interesting about it is DJ Moore also said one of the biggest reasons he signed his deal is because Caleb Williams is here. That belief that Caleb is going to be a superstar in the league, DJ wants to be a part of it. He wants to be around for at least the early part of Caleb Williams' career in Chicago. If I'm Ryan Polls, does that make me a little more hesitant, giving somebody an extension? Because if Caleb is a superstar, you might start attracting some elite free agents. - Dad very well can be. You could be the pied piper in that situation, Cap, where you're that hot team is like, see what they're doing in Chicago? Man, if I could play there. I mean, I feel like I could be the missing ingredient. I could be able to help the ball club. - And I know George was so resistant to hard knocks. I'll bet you after George watches all the episodes of you know, that was actually a pretty good thing for us. - Sure. - Because Polls wants everyone around the league to go, oh wow, blanks being different in Chicago. You see those facilities? Oh, it's awesome. - Look, everybody wants to have generational wealth when they play Cap. Of course, they want to get paid. But for the lot of these young cats, it's about legacy. They don't want to go through life saying, I was paid by Never Wanna Ring. They hate that. They look down at the Reggie Miller's and the Charles Barkley's. They do. They look at them like, yeah, you're a great player, but what did you really do? 'Cause they don't have the context of how hard that is to win a championship. But these young cats now, they already got their money, but they're very concerned about legacy and perception. Social media is a big part of that as well. Hey, you might have been at the top of your profession, but you didn't win a championship, so that makes you a loser. - Right. - They take that to heart. - Let me do. - Whereas Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley is like, I'm paid, man. I'm paid better now, though, it has a player. It didn't work out for places I played, but that's okay. Even without a ring, I'm still a winner. I'm a Hall of Famer. I don't guys don't feel that way. They want a ring, 'cause that solidifies them. They feel like that that's the thing. You think Dan Marino cares about that today? - He wants a ring. - Now, we Dan Marino's like, hey, he played at a top level. - He did. - He's like, I got it. - Some say he's the best quarterback ever. - I got isotonal gloves. I'm good. (all laughing) - At least my hands are nice and warm in the winter. - But I don't have a ring there. - But it's all right, though. But those guys, they understand it, but they're good with it. These cats here? - They don't. - Mm-mm. - Shay. - All right, the NFL's player voted top 100 is currently being released, and right now with only the top 20 left to be revealed, neither DJ Moore or Jalen Johnson have made the list. I assume neither are going to be top 20 players in the NFL voted by the players. But, shot or no shot, DJ and Jalen Johnson should be top 100 players. - Jalen Johnson, that's a shot. And DJ Moore as well. - Yes, top 100, the two of them. That's a shot. - Wow, hold on, hang on. You're gonna have, in the top 100, probably 10 quarterbacks, right? - Yeah. - You're gonna probably have 10 offensive alignment, at least. - 25 wide receivers. - A bunch of wide receivers. Yeah, I would probably agree that you should both be in the top 100. Jalen Johnson, for sure. - So, Shay, as you say that, as you lay that out, if Jalen Johnson and DJ Moore are not on the list now, will there be any bears in this list? - No. - Whoa, whoa, whoa. - No. That's a problem, Cap. No bears in the top 100. Like Jalen Johnson, at the very least. If you don't think of DJ Moore, 'cause many look at DJ Moore on the outside of the top 10. It's a top 15 wide receiver, top 12 wide receiver. Okay, you wanna do that? That's fine. Jalen Johnson? Hmm, okay. - Jalen Johnson's a top three cover quarters in the league. Come on now. - If they're not on the list now, Cap, if they're somewhere in the middle of the list, I'll be surprised. 'Cause then I think that that might be at a little bit of an overreach. But Jalen Johnson, not being in that top 100, that's a problem. - At this point, they're both gonna have to be top 20 if they make the list. And like, look, I like both players, but I'm sorry. Neither of them are top 20 players in the NFL. - That's correct. - So that would be stunning. Especially some of the wide receivers, like Jalen Waddle is ranked in the 50s. I think Jalen Waddle's probably a better receiver than DJ Moore, not by a lot. But Brandon Iuke, I think is in the 60s. I definitely think Iuke is a better wide receiver than DJ Moore, that's not a shot. Just, there are a lot of really good players. Jalen Johnson, I was a little surprised, got left out. But I always take these with a grain of salt too, hoodie. 'Cause the player vote, who knows what the criteria for these guys are. We always hear from players that are like, I don't even watch the league. I just show up to practice and play. - I have a new game if you like to play a Shay between now and the end of the week. The new game, I think we should play it here at Cap of Jay Hood as we look at people outside cap. Right here outside of our state street studios. I think the game we should play is Lower Wacker or Lala Palooza. - Wow. - I think we should play that game. - Lala Palooza brings them all out, man. - See this guy across the street here, Cap. He's wearing an old school Atlanta Hawks jersey, but like back in the day, like old school. You see this guy? He's right next to the Chicago theories. - He's got number 44. - I have that jersey at home. It's the 44 Pete Maravich Atlanta Hawks jersey. I have that exact jersey. Mine just looks cleaner. - Now, here's the thing. I don't know if he flew in, and he looks like that, or if he's from Chicago. - He actually is not a Lala guy. He's from here. - Oh, you've seen him before. - Many times in the same jersey. - I think we need to discuss this. - Even money, it has Milwaukee at any end of the point. - You see him over there, Shay? He's talking to himself. And so there he is. He's having a great discussion, by the way. Better show that we're having today. And so he's got the Maravich jersey. And I'm just wondering, because I've seen that kind of jersey and that kind of dirt from people that have been at Lala Blues before. - Yeah, I'm not a Lala guy. My kids have at it. Tim, good time. - We're not talking X-Fit. We're not talking about RBIs. So Shay's not interested, but I'm telling you, I think we should play that game. Let's go back to the sportsaroo. Here's Shay Norling. - Oh, just want to correct the record. Montes, Sweat, and Keenan Allen did make the top 100. So there are two bears on the list so far. I don't think there'll be any more entries in the top 20. But I was surprised to take more. - Go ahead, Jay Moore. - I was glad you did the second one. - Jaylin Johnson left off. Kaplan, some Cubs news this morning. The Cubs will now join the ranks of teams with patches on their jerseys. A big fat Motorola logo. Sitting right on the sleeve. - Yeah. - I hate these things. - Why do you care? - I like the purity of the uniform. - I mean, it's stick to purity where the sun doesn't shine. That, in a long litany of stupid comments you've made since you joined the show, and we love you here, that is the dumbest thing you've ever said. - I don't like them. - I don't like them. I didn't like the Yankee uniform. I don't like having to patch on it. - But shot or no shot? - The patch on the Cubs uniform is stupid. - That's a no shot because that's business, pal. - Exactly. - That is business. - That's business. That's the way it works. - I mean, my God, who cares? - They put a patch on it. I think they're going to get 8 million a year. They were hoping to get north of 20. They didn't. - Consider the commercials we play on ESPN 1000 and the spots we play with our partners, consider them patches. - Yeah. - Hey Danny, guess what? We think it's stupid to have commercials play. - If we move all the patches from ESPN Chicago, that's a good idea. - We don't invite people into the studio and ask them to pay $14 for a beer either. - You don't know that. - ESPN Chicago is commercial free. - Commercial free. - I have a problem with advertisements. Build a big Motorola sign and write field. I don't care if you've corporatized Wrigley Field anyway. I just, I don't like making the uniforms look like NASCAR suits. - They have a corporatized that they do what every team does. These are businesses, you maniac. - That's ridiculous. - Damn. - Jeez. - The old sports are rude. I don't like the patches on the uniform. - I don't think there should be any commercials and beer should be free at the ballpark. (laughing) - I'm on board with the latter point. - Of course. - This should be free, I'm on board. - Absolutely. No sponsorships at all. You don't have, how do you pay your players? How do you pay your staff? Pay your staff? Doesn't matter. - They all do it for the love of the game. - The love of the game. - Absolutely. - Radio losers. - Absolutely. - If they're gonna run out of money without the Motorola patch, they got bigger problems, all right? - It's adding to the coffers. They've actually done a terrific job of a place that was barren of sponsorships outside of this buds for you who had very few in the ballpark. Actually, that's a great job that they've done. Adding revenue streams to that place. - You can say what you want about how the team plays your exactly correct. - What I haven't moved Wrigley Field. - Correct. - Crane Kenny has done a, with his team, a magnificent job. Oh, what is that like open area there? Why don't we put a Draft King sports book there after the Captain Morgan Club? Why don't we build that? Oh, how much can we get? Millions. Hey, how about we agree to do this for the community? We put a bunch of signs up. We get a bunch of millions more. How about some video boards? You know what? We should buy up all these rooftops here and run them as our own business. - Yes. - Yeah, it's called business. - That's all good. I'm talking about the patch on the uniform. - Who cares? I don't care if they put three patches on the uniform. Does it matter that a NASCAR driver has 60 of them? - I love milk. Thank you, milk. - Yeah, thank you, milk for everything you've done. It got milk patch on the sleeves. - They had to put a logo on the index circle. - That's, I just, if you're gonna do it, whatever, put three patches on the uniform, then get me one soda. But this is what my point is really like, if you're gonna start putting stuff on the uniform, then put it on the field too. I don't wanna hear about, you don't have money. You start selling out the uniform. - All I would tell you is that when you're getting your ass kicked, it doesn't matter what they're wearing. Because you don't see the patches, because they're always looking out to the outfield because the home runs been hit by the opposition. - Might as well go out there and nothing but a jockstrap the way they're playing. Speaking of going out there and nothing but a jockstrap the way they're playing, hoodie, the White Sox have lost count. - Oh, yes. - 17 straight games, 17. They have tied the longest losing streak to start the second half of a season in MLB history. Then if you're wondering if the road to 24 is working and creating a national story, before we got on the air on SportsCenter, they showed White Sox low lights followed by Pedro Grafault's post game. The road to 24 is creating a national story, but shot or no shot. Pedro Grafault will be fired today. - I mean, I would think if they were gonna do it, it would have leaked last night, but there's a lot of smoke that he's in, he's walking the plank here shortly. Why would you let him get on the plane to Minneapolis today? Explain that to me. - 'Cause it's not gonna get turned. It doesn't matter. - Yes, it does matter because you're gonna bring guys up who are prospects. I don't want them polluted by that dude any longer. - Cap, the organization all is filled with second hand smoke. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. - I heard that analogy. That's a good thing. - Well, you said polluted. - Oh, I had to go with the smoke going down again. - That's a really good analogy. Second hand smoke. - The whole organization's plea was second hand smoke, so it doesn't matter if they're polluted or not. It sucks, all of it. You're 40 games up the track. - Hi, I'm Colson Montgomery. Where do I report? I was told I was recalled. Yeah, I'm Pedro Grafault. - Yeah, no, I don't want that. - Oh, it doesn't matter. - Fire his ass today. It's time. Put him out of his misery. Now, I want him to be able to wear this losing streak. I want the 24 to be on him. This, he's already immersed in leading the worst team we've ever seen in the history of Major League Baseball. I want him to be here full stop when we're ignoring him after this first pre-season game and ignoring the White Sox. I want him to wear it every bit of it because along with the losing, maybe not the best guy. And I understand it wears on you, Cap, but at some point though, he can get fired at the end of the season. Last game of the season, you can let him go. 'Cause he's teaching and helping the kids and helping them in a culture because one thing about Pedro Grafault, they're gonna find a way to beat your ass every night. Remember he told you that? With a suit and tie and a dumb hat on his head. On the dirt-based line, interviewed by NBC Sports Chicago, we're gonna find a way to beat your ass. Yeah? Doesn't seem like you beat anyone's ass. - Yeah, again. - He's got a water gun. Anyone else has got a bazooka beating the Sox ass every night. - Let me ask you a question. If I hired you to do a job, say hoodie, you're my guy and you're the manager and it's not going well. And you've lost 17 in a row and you've had another 14-gamer and you're gonna have the worst record in history of baseball. At some point, I'd be like, Jonathan, I love you, man. I appreciate the efforts. We have all let you down. We have all failed at this job. I'm putting you out of your misery. I'm letting whoever it is, Charlie Montoya, or one of the vendors, you're gonna manage to club the rest of this away. Putting you out of your misery. - I'd like to finish the season. - One of the vendors. - I like to finish the season. You know why I wanna finish the season? It's because I got a chance to spend time in Baltimore, get some of the best seafood ever on the road. I can go to Boston, some of the best high-class restaurants. I could be there. I can go to LA, spend time when we play the Angels, and then San Diego. Some of the best restaurants out there in the area. I wanna continue to travel in luxury as long as I can. - Yeah, I'm gonna let you go, Jonathan. We're making a change. Abe Rappick, one of the vendors, has been here 60 years. He's earned the right. - Lloyd Rutsky. We're gonna let him manage a ball club. - You can fire me and you can give my ass off this ball club September 29th after the Tigers beat the White Sox. The last game of the season. - I'll put it out there. I'll manage them for free. You don't even pay me, I'll just sit and dug out. - Yep. - We're gonna let you go. - I could lose 17 straight. - We're gonna let you go. I appreciate all the efforts, but we're making a change. Do not get on the plane to Minneapolis. - And when I look at Rachey Norling managing the ball club, he'll be the one with the uniform without patches on it. - That's correct. - I'm gonna make sure we lose 24 more. - Around the NFL is next on Chicago's Home for the Bears. (upbeat music) - Follow Chicago's Home for Sports on Twitter at ESPN1000. Cap and Jay Hood are back on ESPN Chicago. Chicago's Home for Sports. - Nick Bolz sucks, he sucks. I'm just a fan, I'm not a football developer. I love the Green Bay Packers. - The guy is front, but there he goes. - This is not Detroit man, this is the Super Bowl. - I love winners, he starts to come at a moment. - This is a really thickly built guy. - I mean, what's the answer you're looking for on these things here? - Whoa, Billy! - It's time to go around the NFL right here on the Cap and Jay Hood Morning Show, here on ESPN1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. - Let me go, they'll wish we were in Ken. - Still to come. We will have deal breakers on the deal breakers Thursday. - Around the NFL. Here's Shane Orling, Shane. - All right, let's get started with around the NFL. Steelers training camp, I kept reading yesterday. Justin Fields, he's opening people's eyes. Debate on get up this morning. Could Justin Fields be the starter in Pittsburgh by the time training camp comes to an end? I don't care whether it's Russell Wilson, whether it's Justin Fields, the Steelers are gonna do what they're gonna do. My question is, can these two coexist on that team? With the national narratives, the coverage that the Steelers get, the way people are gonna talk about this all season, it will be a question, is it remotely possible that Russell Wilson and Justin Fields can coexist on the Steelers? - Yes, they will. They will coexist because of the leadership that's there. If this is just some young head coach to handle those two egos, well, definitely Russell Wilson's ego does no question. That'd be a problem, but the guy at the top of this team, Mike Tomlin, will make sure that those two can coexist. Now, who's gonna get the lion's share of the snaps? The hope is that that is Justin Fields and he can turn his own narrative around. But yes, I think that this will not be a problem for Mike Tomlin. - Look, Russell Wilson is the starter if healthy. They're being careful with his calf. Wasn't it burrow at a calf last year? - They're being very, very careful. He said, if it was a game day, I could absolutely go. But they're just being careful. But this whole... - Justin Fields ran for his sixth rushing touchdown in training camp. He nodded 17 passing TV, six rushing, while Caleb Williams is struggling with eight touchdowns and six interceptions. A bust in Chicago? Shut up at just him Fields or whatever his guy's name is. Clowns. Clowns. Listen to what our players are saying. Mercedes and buyer. This dude's special. He's one of the best we've seen at this age. Let's go. - It's fine. I think we should have broadcast live from La Trobe just to take care of the Justin Fields fans. - We didn't get there for Mitch. Why would we go now? - 'Cause I'm on the show now. - Wow. - You were on the show then? - I was not. - Yes, you were. - Working nights? - No. - Yep. - Absolutely not. - I was on the show. - Wait, when Mitch was there. - I was not there. - Mitch was the quarterback in '19. We got named at morning show August of '20. That was his first camp in La Trobe. - I wasn't really here. - Oh. - Shay? (laughing) - Wow. - All right, Jets camp, I've been on the record. I think the Jets are due for an underwhelming season. I don't know if any of the reported exchanges that Garrett Wilson's angry that Rogers wasn't at OTAs and minicamp and other things are true, but I do know for a fact with video evidence that Aaron Rogers and Garrett Wilson have been getting into very heated conversations during training camp practices on the sideline. And Rogers says these are good conversations. They might appear to be much more heated than they are, but there's usually a smile on our face afterwards, at least one of us. Robert Griffin III also tweeted this is a good thing. Teammates challenging each other to find greatness. Is it really that great that Rogers and Garrett Wilson seem to be fighting after snaps at training camp? - I think Aaron Rogers likes it. He does. And you know deep down, a lot of those players are like, "This guy can just go to Egypt or this guy could just do what he wants to do and just go unchecked." Well, what happened with him and Robert Salah, Salah didn't tell him it was okay for him to go. And so, but I would imagine the other teammates of Rogers are like, "What? How does he get a chance to do whatever he wants and we can't?" That's two Americas right there with the Jets. That ain't right. - Now, I think the Jets are loaded with talent. - Loaded. - I'm way higher on the Jets if he stays healthy, Rogers. Then Shea is. But what was the exact exchange, Shea? - I saw it on video. - I don't think that there is an exact, I saw one floating around that Garrett Wilson was upset that Rogers went to Egypt instead of taking part fully and training camp. - Yeah, but was it something like Rogers said to him, "Hey man, you gotta learn, you gotta do this on this rock." And he goes, "We could have practiced that at Minicap if you weren't in Egypt." - Yeah. - Yeah. - Something along those lines, yes. - Like that's going back at him. - Yes. And maybe that brings him closely. It's one of two things, brings you close together or it separates and divides the locker room. - Yeah. - One or the other. - Agreed. - Well said. - So, I mean, I would imagine there's some resentment there and rightfully so. Robert Salah, either way, Shay, he gets fired at the end of the season. At the top of the list, bad communicator, for God, it looks tough, it looks football. He's not a very good communicator. Rogers said he did not know that he wasn't gonna play the first two preseason games. He had to find out from PR. How come Salah didn't tell Rogers that? - Dang. - So, the press conference that Rogers had yesterday, I heard that sound. - And like at our place saying what you want about Matt, it seems like he's got an open dialogue with his players. - Oh, you know, team PR usually handles communication with team leadership and there's no question in my mind that Aaron Rogers runs the show in New York, so. - What do you mean team PR handles communication with team leadership? - I'm just making a joke about the fact that I think Rogers is running that franchise. So, what's he gonna get information from a subordinate in Salah? - Yeah. - Crazy. Dude, really? Like, who do you think is calling the shots? If Salah says something that Rogers doesn't like, Rogers wasn't taking it from Matt LeFloor. Matt LeFloor's a way better head coach. Rogers was freelance in doing his own thing with the offense. He's not taking anything from Robert Salah. - Salah? Yeah, he's got a win. He has to win, but they're loaded, man. Loaded. They got so much talent on that roster, Shay. - I don't disagree with you. I just, the way this is all unfolding, I think they're gonna have an underwhelming season. They have a 41-year-old quarterback coming back from an Achilles tear. And everybody's, well, it used to be great. - We're gonna see. - Still don't love their offensive line. - Still holding out hope that is his little man crush. Aaron Rogers can get back on top. - I think he's gonna have a hell of you. - You like Rogers on top, don't you? - Oh, we got deal breakers right around the corner. - Yeah, I'm doing it, you don't know. - We got deal breakers right around the corner on the cap and jay good morning show. - Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
