And we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood with you, we've got Shay, we got Jay Moore, we got you. For a three hour ride on this Waddle Wednesday, with open phone lines for you, 3-1-2-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our telephone number. And Cap, sometimes in the world of sports, we use a phrase. And the definition of the phrase is vetting issues that affect the business thoughtfully and carefully. That is due diligence. That's the definition of due diligence. And what Ryan Polls has done here, as a general manager of the Chicago Bears, is to be able to do exactly what I just said, vetting issues that affect the business thoughtfully and carefully. We take a look at DJ Moore, a guy that is a cornerstone for this organization at the wide receiver position. Here we are, even before the first preseason game, and what happens, a $110 million extension, the largest in team history, and the 82.6 million in guarantees is a third among NFL receivers. That is due diligence. Making sure you have no stone unturned. Making sure that we're gonna remove all the controversy, whatever we need to do, we're gonna take care of it. That's what you like about a training camp. It should be about football and getting better. Not about controversy, not about money, not about how I'm not getting paid. DJ Moore's taking care before we even get to the season cap. That is due diligence. Locked up for six years. He sells two left on the current deal. And Ryan Polls said, let's get this done now. Let's take care of our guys. He is making all of these moves, and on the surface, it looks like he's making a bunch of correct moves. All the due diligence they did on Caleb Williams. I can tell you from people I've talked to in that building, Caleb Williams is loved in that room. Loved, they said he has absolutely taken over. And they said he is somebody that everybody wants to follow. He has shown great leadership. He also is a guy who is keeping his mouth quiet when he's trying to learn. They said he'll lead when he needs to lead, but he also understands I'm a rookie. I'm trying to learn here as well. But what Polls did yesterday, what did we always hear? The Bears have an internal rule. They don't do extensions until you're in one year left in your deal. Guess what? DJ's done everything right since he got here. He's an awesome dude in the room. He's a hell of a football player. Ryan Polls said, no, no, no. That's not a hard and fast rule. We go case by case. He earned it. Let's go. Now, I know that Shefty is reporting that it's the largest extension in team history. Total value was Khalil Mack. He got 141 million back in 2018. But average annual value, DJ 27.5, largest guarantee. One of the biggest guarantees we've seen a receiver get. And I think he was smart. If he had a monster, you could have gotten more. Yeah. But guess what? What if he got hurt? Take the guarantee. You'll love playing here and now for basically the rest of his career, he's a bear. Funny you say the number 27? 27, you said, right? 27.5 is what Shefty texted me. I will give you a short list cap of the most receiving yards before turning 27 in NFL history. Number one is Randy Moss on that list. Number two is DeAndre Hopkins. Number three is Mike Evans. Number four is Larry Fitzgerald. Number five is DJ Moore. OK, so the first four, same one more time. Moss? Yep. Hopkins. Yep. Evans. Yep. Fitzgerald. All going to the Hall of Fame. Either in or will be there. Every one of those guys. Well, and if Caleb Williams is who I believe he is, you believe he is, the Bears believe he is, if he's that dude, DJ Moore will be in the Hall of Fame too. 100%. I think it's interesting. And I think that we have to be the first show to bring this up. And maybe the permeate throughout the day. Of when you have a general manager that is trying to do the right things for the organization, it takes people a back cap. They're a gasket. Like, wait, wait a minute now. You're paying that. That's an overpay. You can't do that. You can't. Do you understand where the Bears were and where the Bears are now? Yep. Good organizations do what the Bears did yesterday by locking up DJ Moore. We would see that through the transactions. Oh, look what this team did. Look what that team did. And then with the Bears, it'd be controversy. All the Bears are too cheap. The Bears are not going to pay. The Bears will win until the 11th hour. All this stuff, trying to get a bargain. You remember training camp when Curtis Enos was here? He got drafted. He hired some guy who'd never been an agent. He married a stripper. And he didn't get signed. You remember all this? I do call. And like three years later, he was working at UPS. Sad story. Horrible. But that's true. That's where he ended up horrible. And now you watch Dallas with CD Lamb. And it wasn't there when camp started. Is that going to get his deal? Because Michael Parsons is going to get his deal. Matthew Judon in New England. Jamar Chase. We can keep going on. There's a bunch of them. Trey Hendrickson. Our camp? No. God forbid they have serious injury, because right now, all they're doing is business. Just taking care of business every day. There's something to be said about football piece. When it comes to the Bears, the conversations that you get on the get-ups and the first things first, it's not about controversy, it's them guessing in the dark about Caleb Williams. Are the expectations on Caleb Williams too high is over our shoulder right now on the get-up. That's the question. Right. That's all they have, Cap. Because there isn't one of those things where there's a hold-in or a hold-out. There isn't a general manager that's on the hot seat. The head coach? Oh, different story. We're going to find out how all this works. Agree. But the point is, Cap, is that with all of this, the only things left is to be able to win games. The only thing left is for them to be able to be in the playoffs and for them to start their run. That's the only thing that's left. And again, when we take a look at this depth chart that we open up every day, depth charts don't win championships. They don't win divisions. They don't get playoff births. However, when you take a look at the amount of talent that's been assembled by the general manager Ryan Polls, you have to take your hat off to it. And again, you have to compare to what we saw even four or five years ago to where we are right now. How about two years ago when they went three and 14? Well, it's still under the same regime, but there was a plan there where people weren't sure of the plan. OK, so they thought it was the same old, same old, because what we're used to around here, we're used to seeing losses and ineptitude. People didn't know. So Polls got here two years ago, January. So it was two and a half years in. Go back to the last roster of Ryan Pace. And compare that roster to this roster. Who's left? Oh, that really plays. Cole Comette, Jalen Johnson, which is Ryan Pace's best draft pick in his tenure. He was here like seven years. I mean, Khalil Herbert is still here. I don't know how far how much longer. But you look at what Polls has brought in. Oh, Teva Jenkins was a Pace guy. But Braxton Jones, Ryan Pulse. Darnell Wright, Ryan Pulse. That's your bookend tackles. No, are they good enough? We'll find out. We're going to find out. Obviously Caleb, DeAndre Swift, Roshan Johnson, DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Roma Dunesay, Tyler Scott, Gerald Everett, Mercedes Lewis. Why don't we keep going? That's just on the offense. Sure. It's awesome to see what he's done. See, if you're always optimistic about the Bears every single year, no matter who's on the roster, no matter what the one lost record is, no matter the head coach, then you may not see this very clearly, Cap. If you're always optimistic and believe like, Bears are going to Super Bowl this year. Bears are going to Super Bowl this year. Well, you can look at a roster and can tell the roster versus the way I look at it, the way my brain works, is the Bears against the NFC North, the Bears against the NFC, the Bears against the NFL, based on the roster. If you have perspective and take a look at what's happening in the division and the conference and the entire NFL, you'll know before even the first snap when that the Bears can compete or not. You already know because if you're a fantasy football player or a gambler, you know the players and you know difference makers when you see it. You can hope and wish for certain guys on a Bears roster, but this is different. This is different because of the way he's able to stockpile this talent. Now does he take the plunge and try and pounce on somebody else's misfortune, troubles, whatever. Matthew Judon walked out of camp the other day, got into an argument with the GM and said, I'm out, see you later. And he left, left. He's 31 years old. Coming off a torn bicep, they said he's 100% healthy a year before, he had 15 and a half sacks. Albert Brere yesterday with us said they absolutely should call New England. - That got irrigated by the way. People were listening. - Saw. - Mm-hmm. - The Ben Devine's in the world. (laughing) I follow him. He does a great job. - He's very good. - Very good. He replaced the late, great Daniel Greenberg. - Yes. - Yes. - Passed away. - Yes. - We can confirm he actually is dead. - Yes, 100%. We'll kill anybody before they die. We don't do that on this show. Maybe I do once tomorrow. I'd like to apologize. Who did I kill yesterday? - Chris Speyer. - Chris Speyer. - Chris Speyer. - Yes. Former Calvin Giant. - Yeah. - You were saying? - Anyway, the way the bears are being run, again, I may be way off on this, but I don't think I am. It really looks like George is getting his steps in. I'm piring his baseball games, sitting in the owner's box and Paul's is running the show with Warren. - Doesn't it? - Yes. - Like George? Here's some new gear that came in from Majestic. There you go. I got you some new shoes. You're really cool with the Bears logo. Here you go. - That's good. - And we got you a brand new Charged Up Apple Watch, the new one, the SC. Here you go. We'll see you. What are you guys working on? Don't worry about it. - Oh, man. - Just leave the checkbook. So good. - We're signing a player for how much? Another one? Yep, we are. DJ Moore. - Just stay out of the way. - Montez Sweat. - Yeah. - Let's go. - Yeah, just stay out of it. And again, no one's guaranteeing anything when it comes to Chicago Bears. Not guaranteeing anything. What we're saying is is that this situation with the Chicago Bears is set up for success. It's all about execution now. It's all about execution. There's additions and signings to this ball club that I did not expect. Oh, because I'm a Bears fan. I've been there before, I've done that before. But we haven't done it like Ryan Pulse was doing it before. I didn't expect an extra tight end that it will be utilized outside of cold commit and Gerald Everett. I mean, that's not just a guy cap. He could be a cornerstone, along with Marseilles Lewis for leadership and a guy that can help you as well. - Tyson Beijing was on a podcast that said Marseilles Lewis is no question the most important person in our locker room. That's a hell of a statement with all the studs that are in there. The question was, who's the most important person in the locker room? Not necessarily the best player. He said, oh, that's easy. That's Marseilles Lewis. Everybody goes to him. He's the leader. He's the one that sets the tone in there. That's why he's back for his 19th NFL season. I love it. - Jay Moore, let's set the mood. How about this? How about you and I? We set the mood for the Bears fan because the trailer's already out for hard knocks. - I can see the operation, the execution. - So good. - Keep it simple and be consistent. We're gonna give you the keys, your own diamond. This is your team. - You better come to play. - Rough and tough monsters of the midway. - You're gonna get hit. That's what I heard. - I like this guy body. - With the first pick in the 2024 NFL draft, the Chicago Bears select Caleb Williams. - Unequivocally, we have the right set of individuals. - That's what we do. - They're gonna take us to the next level. - One, two, three! - One, two, three! - Oh, it is so good. I've watched it like that in time. The life's like, "Are you watching that trailer?" And yet, yes, I am. - Pass me a Winston, will ya? - Oh, man. - Got a lighter. - Jaymore, pass me that way. - So freaking cool. The way they wove in the history, there's Erlach. There's the Lake Dick fuckus. - Thank you. - There's Singletair. I like this kind of party. Yeah, it was dude. There's Hamp and Mongo. Dude, it was awesome. Absolutely awesome. I cannot wait. - I think he defluses at least a six there. I'm sure I know he can get a little... That was just kind of a conversation with the rookies, I believe. So that was kind of conversational, but there was a poignant thought there from Iberfluze. He's letting you know directly how you feel. - So I was having an off the record chat with a current player. And I asked you a question. Iberfluze, he goes, "Oh, love that dude." I said, "Tell me about, does he hold people accountable?" He's like, "Are you serious?" He said, "You guys don't see it at the podium?" - That would be me. - That would be you. He said, "That dude gets after us now." - Right. - He said, "Nobody realizes how much we like playing "for that guy." And then he holds us accountable. He goes, "You guys don't see any of it." And he likes it that way. I'm like, "Okay." 'Cause the heat's on, man, you better win. - Let's go, Mike. - That's the only missing ingredient. - That's it. - We've laid out the things that Ryan Polls has done to get this team in place to win. It's not wonny. Oh, we got the pieces in place. It's not that. This is the general manager saying, "Here you go, Matt. "You got to win or else because I'm going all in." He did. One's the last thing we heard that about the Chicago Bears team going all in. - Right. Now all the chips in the middle of the table, Cap. Here you go. - Now, if it is totally Matthew Judon or whoever, that's coming here on the defensive line, 'cause I still think they could use that. We asked Albert about Tristan Worf's, the stud left tackle of the box. And what I read yesterday is there's no chance you can get him out of there. - They're going to pay him. - It went from, "Oh my God, the Bears are so cheap too." Why? That's way too much money. - It doesn't matter. It's due diligence. - Correct. - That's what today's word is, is due diligence. Taking care of it before becomes a factor, before becomes an issue, before becomes a headline. Again, it's new to the Chicago Bears, but I'm all for it. Now, it's about winning. 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N-3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our phone number. How much has Ryan Pulse changed your confidence in the Bears? If you're just joining us, how much has Ryan Pulse changed your confidence in the Bears? We're talking to you about it right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN 1,000. Cap, something else has been going on as well. And that is conversation regarding whether or not the starters should play in the Hall of Fame game coming up against Houston. You can hear that game right here on ESPN 1,000, like all the rest of the Bears games. But, you know, you have four preseason games. And as much as it would be cool to see the ones out there coming up tomorrow, I understand the game plan for Matty Rifluis and the Bears. Because I expect to see Caleb, if you're not gonna play this first game, he will play the second game. We talked about this yesterday. Maybe a good portion in the third game as far as him playing a quarter in front of the home folks. And then maybe the fourth. All I know is that I don't want the Bears to feel like they're taking a back when the season starts against Tennessee. The ones have to play. Caleb has to play. He's gotta get that rhythm, that feel of being in a NFL offense. Practice is one thing, taking on your teammates, but it's another thing to be able to take on someone in anger. And if it's not gonna happen, it's not gonna happen when we want it to happen, a lot of us. But the second and third and fourth preseason games, it will happen. I'm looking forward to it. - I'm excited to know that football's right around the corner. Am I jacked up for the Hall of Fame game? - It's cool when the Bears run out in their uniforms. And I'm gonna watch the game, but I'm also gonna be doing something else at the same exact time. I'm not gonna be locked in like, hey Mindy, don't bother me, I gotta be locked in to use your metaphor, the cap cave. No, that's not gonna happen. In the summer, Hall of Fame game? No, no Caleb, no starters. It would be watching guys who'll be working for whatever in two weeks. - Outside of New York McDonald's with a squeegee. - Yeah. - Looking for change. - Wow. - Cap watching not all of Fame game. Just put my fries in the bag, buddy. - Which is one of my favorite phrases these days. - Yeah. - It's so good. It's so good. - It's so condescending, but it's so funny. - I mean, let's just be honest, I'm going to a concert tomorrow night for Thursday night. - Yeah, and I'm bringing my iPad. It's an outdoor concert. I'll be sitting on the lawn and I'll have my iPad and I'll be watching the music I'll be playing. - Yeah. - That's it. - That's fine. But the bottom line is that it's about the starters and it's about the Bears being prepared, getting ready for their game against Tennessee. - Yeah. - And just be ready for the maniac, Jeffrey Simmons. We'll get to him too. - He's a hell of a football player. He's out of his mind. - 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N-3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our phone number. Let's get your thoughts about the Chicago Bears. Ryan Polls, as we laid out in our first segment, talking about how this feels different as far as what he's been able to do. Look, Bears fans, we've been here before, but we, as far as the optimism of a season, but it's really about how this team can be able to gel and looking at the amount of parts that have been put into this depth chart for the Bears to succeed. Let's just see what happens. Lewis is with us on ESPN 1000. Lewis, good morning. - Hey, good morning, guys. Love listening. Joe makes my drive to work all so much more bearable. Just wanna say, look, I'm not even 30 yet, so I haven't exactly gotten the greatest teams. I've always had those lovely teams that came up just short. I had that one year at Maggie. You know what, I've been a cautiously optimistic fan for a long time. This is the first time that I am truly, and I mean truly excited. And you know what, you know how confident I am that this team is going to do well? You remember that guy, I'm sure everybody remembers that guy, Eddie, that Bears fan and name only. I am so confident that I swear to you, after every single win, whether it's Monday, Tuesday, even Friday or Friday after the Thanksgiving game, or it's something if you guys have to be doing one after a Saturday game, if we get one, I will call in and I will laugh at that guy's stupidity for thinking that Paul has just put together an embarrassing roster. - So, Eddie, the North side, where are you at, Eddie? - He's out there in the truck right now. - I am so excited. I hope he hears this, and I hope, I hope he hears every time I call in. I swear to you, after everyone, you will hear my voice laughing at him. Right, love it. - Louis, we appreciate the telephone call. And already firing a salvo at Eddie from the North side. How about that? - Take that Eddie from the North side. - Because he's a heel, not really a Chicago sports fan. - Yes. - Not really, because even as the most disappointed, discouraged Chicago sports fan cap, there's always something you could say, like I like him, or I like how they do this. It's never anything positive. It always sucks for him. - Correct. He wakes up every day and goes, let me see. What sucks today? - I mean, I've never heard him with one positive thing. I've besides anything before, 1984. - Joey G ain't far behind. - He's with us on. Captain J. Hood, Joey, good morning. - Hi, Joey. - Good morning, guys. How are you? - Good. - Good, man, what's on your mind? - What's on my mind is, is this even if Louis could be able to coach this talent, get pulled, put around him. - That would be me. - Is the beer gonna work? - We're gonna find out, man. I told you, I just talked to a player who said, dude, you guys have no idea how much we like playing for this dude, and how he holds us all accountable. We're gonna find out, 'cause if they don't win, he'll be gone. - Yeah, but playing, playing is one thing. Coaching him to play is the second thing, is it that? - You're 100% right, Joey. The idea that players like him does nothing for me as a fan. - No, not like. - They said he holds them accountable. I said that to him. I go, yeah, he's a good guy. No, no, no, he said, that guy gets after us. - It does not mean anything to me as a fan that Matt Irafus holds players accountable, and the reason why is because I see a string of Ls from last year. You just can't turn a blind eye to what the resume has been. The resume is the resume, Joey, as you well know. - You got that right. - He's got a lot to prove this. - He's got a lot to prove this. The idea that players respect him because he holds them accountable, that means nothing to me until I start seeing victories, and for this team to get turned around. - But it is nothing to me, that is part of the process. - What's the process? - I said that he's the guy. Okay, how long is he the guy if they're one in six, or two in four? - It's a good question. - It's a good question. We're going to find out. - And here's another BB. How do you not start our star? - It can't in Ohio, where he'll be in 10 years, you don't start this kid. - DJ Moore? - But at least the series. - Who? Caleb? - DJ Moore. - Yeah. - Joey, there is not a team in the NFL that has started their quarterback in the Hall of Fame game since Teddy Bridgewater in 2015. They're not starting-- - There's not been a general manager that stunned what he did yesterday under the radar, landed DJ for six years. - Yeah. - Well, Joey, put it this way. I know that you want to see it. I know many Bears fans want to see it. It's not like he's going to be put under glass for the entire preseason. It's at the Bills, it's against the Bengals, against the Chiefs. We'll see a plenty of Caleb Williams. As much as it'd be cool to see him out there now, I understand the game plan. - I saw you guys. Thank you for taking my call. Share your beautiful human being, pal. Love you. - All right, Joey. - You're drinking this morning? - We appreciate the telephone call. No, no, but Joey G in that regard is right. Because we are optimistic about what the season can bring, we cannot turn a blind eye to what the past was. Yes, it's a new season, but still, they might respect him. However, I don't respect his time management. How about that? I don't respect some of the things that he did as a head coach. How about that? Neophyte as a head coach, learning on the job. He's supposed to be an A to B coach. Hopefully, he can surpass that with the roster that he's been blessed with. - Hopefully. - Because that matters. I don't care what the players think of Eber Flus. What I care about is what about my favorite football teams winning or losing, and is he the reason why they're not winning? That's a big question. - They have to win this year. He has got to show significant progress. How much is Ryan Polls changed your confidence in the Bears? We're talking to you about that here on the home of the Bears. Also still to come, we'll get a chance to hear from Eber Flus about his game plan on not using the first team against the Houston Texans coming up at the Hall of Fame game. He gives this explanation coming up next on Cap and J-hood. - Checkmate, one six, and he has suppression on target. - That's why I see him in my shot. - Shot. Or no shot with Cap and J-hood on ESPN 1000 and ESPN Chicago app. - That's why I see him in my shot. - Good morning, and welcome in to the Cap and J-hood Morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app, with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. Now time for Shadow No Shot and is brought to you by-- - That'd be ESPN Bet Now live in Illinois. Get $100 for free bets when you make any sports book wager. Open that account now at ESPN Bet. - Let's take a morning to shade W. Norlin. - Good morning, boys, on a wild Wednesday. I'm feeling good. I'd love to know how the two of you are feeling. The road to 24 continues on. White Sox trying to match and exceed the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies. Record mark of 23 straight losses. And Hoodie this morning, they are the front page of ESPN.com for not trading Gary Crochet. I've told you my whole goal is the heat to turn up. - Yeah, it's turning up. - Yeah, it's really something. You have all the headlines for the wrong reasons. String of losses and no hope for the decade. And no hope into next decade also. This isn't getting turned anytime soon. - No. - When you're dealing with the GM of the Dodgers, you're dealing with the GM of the Phillies in Kansas City and Baltimore, those guys are tenured. They know what the hell they're doing. And you've got this tenderfoot neophyte in Chris Getz as a general manager. He doesn't know, Cap. He's probably been part of trades as a player, but to be able to be a Wheeler dealer, this is why all these grades that we see online like all the Sox, C plus, D, F, hmm. You wonder why? Because those guys have experienced those other general managers that he dealt with. Ah, Chris Getz. Hey, by the way, I'm gonna throw you a bone. I'll take a loy and they're laughing on the other side of the phone, laughing. Just to help the kid out. Hey, kid, he just rubbing his hair. It's all right, kid. We'll take a loy off your hands. (laughing) - It's just-- - Please! - The, he's right there. The front page of ESPN.com, but the two baseball analysts that they asked both agree that it was not the time to trade crochet, you do it in the off season because of his demand for an extension and innings limits and the whole deal. And that was what threw a wrench into the plans. So I think he'll be gone this winter. - I do too. - And there is, I will ask Waddle about it when he joins us at 8.30. But you're not signing this guy. That's stupid. - He's not gonna be part of this ball club. - Correct, because if you sign him, you're not gonna be contending. It's not like you build around this guy. By the time you're ready, he's in his 30s. - Yep. - No. - And when he gets to his 30s, the socks will still be looking in the basement, still looking up at the other teams. - They will. - It's just the fact. - They just will. - Yeah. All right, Shay. - All right, bears camp so far has been light on drama, but it seems like drama is developing on the offensive line. Nate Davis was in street clothes. Anthony street clothes Davis, meet Nate street clothes Davis at practice yesterday. Bears continue to give first team reps on the offensive line. The guys like Coleman Shelton and Ryan Bates, amid Nate Davis's absence. Even if he gets healthy, you look at his history as a player. He has never had a season without an injury setback. And there remains the running risk of Kevin Jenkins health at guard. This is not exactly a bulwark offensive line of healthy guys. Puts the bears offensive line depth in question already for me. So shot or no shot. Ryan polls should sign free agent center, Connor Williams and cut bait with Nate Davis. - I don't know anything about Connor Williams health. There's a reason that no one has signed him. There's a reason he's still sitting out on the street when prior to the injury he was believed to be the number one free agent at his position. So I can't give you an honest answer if Connor Williams is healthy and a good dude and a good fit in the room and all that. Sure, bring them in. But yeah, I would not get cut Nate Davis. I would not do that. - That's a no shot for me. Only because is Nate Davis hurt where he won't play in the preseason? I mean, he's just in street clothes now, but I mean-- - Ebert Flus made it sound like it was not a major deal that he will play. - I mean, you know what I care about is when the bell rings. That's why I care about the most. I don't know if he's going to play in the preseason or not. I just know that they feel like he's a veteran with some experience that could help a young quarterback. I just don't want to go through the summer again here in the preseason talking about Nate Davis's storyline. Either he's going to be a difference bigger for the team or he's not. - Agreed. - But also I'll say this, Nate Davis is not the reason why you win or lose ball games. That's just one position at right guard. I mean, there's a reason why they brought a clown car of offensive lineman in here early to find out who could be on this depth chart. - Plus, you're not saving anything on your cap. I think it's a $600,000 saving. That's nothing. So, yeah, no, I'm not, unless he's a detriment in the room. - No, I'm not doing that. - Or hurt. - Yeah, if you tell me he doesn't want, he's, what's the term, Jake in it? - Yeah. - He doesn't want to practice he doesn't want to play. Okay, then make a statement. But it sounds like they feel like he's going to get back on the field and he is a fairly talented cat when he plays. - And if it is a problem like as far as culture fit, this is the new Bears, he'll be gone. - He'll be gone. 100%. - This is not one of those things where you keep him because of salary or keep him around because he's a good locker room. They'll get rid of him. - Correct. - Ask Chase Claypool. - That is, yes, that's correct. - Shay. - All right, Kevin Warren joined Waddle in Sylvie yesterday at Hallis Hall, talked about the future of the stadium plan. Sylvie asked him, how confident are you that you will get a stadium on the lakefront? Here's Kevin Warren. - Absolutely. I mean, you know, and fortunately, me coming here to the Bears, I was blessed to have the challenge of being involved with an incredible group of people at the U.S. Bank Stadium. And if you saw the number of twists and turns that we went through in Minnesota, that's part of it. I mean, that's why when you build these stadiums, you focus on having them functionable for 30 or 40 years. This is not something that you do every couple years. These are complicated projects. Now, they're special projects once you get them done. When you cut the ribbon and even more so when you play in them, it really is special. So we're exactly where I thought we would be. They take time. You know, our team is continually working daily on working through all of the issues, all the complex financial issues, all the economic development issues, all of the diversity and inclusion issues. So we're very cognizant of it. So absolutely. So if you could really go look at my strategic plan for this year, this is about where I thought, you know, we would be. And I have the utmost faith in Governor Pritzker. I have the utmost faith in Mayor Johnson. And I say even Mayor Hayes here in Arlington Heights because we're the largest landowner there. And I'm just confident. This is a very complex political environment. Just look what happened in our country in the last couple of weeks. I mean, and you know, there are a lot of moving parts. So because that I am again back to be a rational, reasonable person, but I'm not surprised. You know, there's a lot of work that we've put into it. There's a lot of work to be done. And I have the utmost faith that at the appropriate time, we will be able to come together and work something out that's in the best interest of the state of Illinois in a city of Chicago, our Chicago Bears fans. And so these things absolutely take time. Fortunately, I've run this marathon before and it's ended up pretty well. You as a bank stadium still has been voted the number one, you know, stadium in all the pro football, maybe in all the sports, but that was not done in a couple of weeks period. It took a lot of times. There's a lot of ups and downs. There's a lot of planning, a lot of revising. But at the end of the day, I'm always focused on the end product. - So confidence there will be a new stadium, but I didn't hear him say the word lakefront even one time. Shot or no shot, Kevin Warren is accepting. It's not gonna be on the lakefront. - I'm gonna say there's no shot yet, but it's coming. I personally, if Kevin was sitting here with us, I would tell him, I think you're making a grave mistake putting it in the city. You own all that real estate in Arlington Heights. You could create as wattle first coined it, paradise. Go to Arlington Heights. - It's coming. - What about the first part of what he said, Douche? When he said a lot there, but what about the first part? - Absolutely. I mean-- - On his confidence lakefront stadium. - Absolutely. I mean, you know, and fortunately, me coming here to the Bears, I was blessed to have the challenge of being involved with an incredible group of people at U.S. Bank Stadium. - At the beginning, he made it seem like that. It was the question, are you confident that the Bears can get a stadium on the lakefront? And he said absolutely, right? That was the beginning of it, correct? - You know, he's also mentioned the focus remains on museum campus, but it does sound less assured, doesn't it? When he brings up the relationship with the mayor with Arlington Heights and owning the land, being the largest landowners in Arlington Heights, it doesn't sound like the confident and laser focus on the lakefront that we've heard previously. - To me, Kevin has never dealt with anything quite like this, Cap. We don't have to be in the room to know that, to deal with friends with the park. He's never dealt with the park district. I mean, it was a song and a dance, I'm sure, in Minneapolis, St. Paul versus this, because I'm sure his thought was Chicago, of course, the lakefront. We just built right there on Soldier Field. We can be able to have Barret I's there. Oh, no, you can't. - Correct. - No, you can't. - Is it Chase's dad, Forest Claypool still running things over there? And he ran the park district, right? - Yes. - He's the guy that did the original deal, I think, with the Bear. He's not still involved, I don't think. - I don't think so. - But he, Forest Claypool was the guy, I think, back in the day. And then friends of the park and the park district, they called all the shots. Not Kevin. - I don't have to be in the room, you don't have to be in the room, and I think Chicago doesn't have to be in the room to understand why that there's some red tape there. Bear DICE in Aunting Heights is the spot. - Agree. - You own the land. - Agree? - I understand that you, see, as I told you, Shea, like weeks ago, this is all politics. Well, I'm from here, kept from here. We know the red tape in the politics in this city and in this state. Kevin was not used to this. - You go along to get along. - You mean him tell me, I can't build my own Bear DICE? No, you can't. He talked to us, the park district. Okay, well then, we're gonna go over here. Hey, you brought up Mayor Johnson and Governor Pritzker just to get him all involved in the soundbite. But ultimately, it's about Auntington Heights. To me, because you own the land. There you go, you do whatever you want with it. It makes sense, spot a place where you can have, you can do whatever you want with Bear DICE, or over here, where you have limitations. Which one do you choose? - I don't understand why he is so resistant to tailgaining and all the other things that should go part of the experience. - Who, Warren? - Yeah. Like, if you build down here, you're not tailgating. - He's playing both sides. That's what he's doing. - Like, he's political like it is a state. - I'm sure he's been there, but, Kevin, go to Kansas City and watch how the Chiefs fans do it. Miles and miles of tailgating for Chiefs Kingdom. It's an event, it's amazing. - He's doing, he's playing both sides. - Probably. - He's political too, he knows. Cap, come on now. - Deep down, he's like, come on. - To his wife, hun, probably wanna look at a condo out there in the Arlington Heights area. - Mayor Johnson was nice to me, invited me over to his West Side flat, went down to Springfield, spent time with Governor Pray. - You know, that's all. He's a front facing person with the Chicago Bears. He's just, he's just talking. He's walking and talking it. - It is what it is. - Shake, can you squeeze in one more before around the NFL? - Yeah, White Sox ended an era yesterday, sending Aloy Jimenez to Baltimore in a salary dump. Finally, getting rid of the last vestige of that much maligned contenta trade. Yuck. Regardless, if you're a White Sox fan or a Cubs fan, a simple question, shot or no shot, we can all agree that was the worst effing trade in the last decade in this town. That I mean useless. - You didn't win it and I didn't win either, Cap. - That whole thing just sucks. - No, that, that could town a trade and they'll be comfy. - Hey, we, he helped us get to the 2017 NLC. - Oh, stop. If that team was truly all in, they would've gotten Justin Verlander who begged to be a co, begged, begged. That's who they would've gotten. - Not can turn it because his contracts team friendly, we can go get. - Guess who they signed. Brandon Morrow, you darvish. See you later, thanks for coming, bad. - I don't think either one of us won that. I mean, Aloy had some highlights, but the most of his highlights was on a stretcher or on crutches or being helped off the field. - You saw that Socks on 35th, who's a great Twitter follow? - Yeah. - He has a video. Goodbye to Aloy, but it has been all his highlights since him crashing into the wall, pulling his hamstring, pointing at his leg with Pedro. Dude, it's hilarious. - It's so bad. - Falling. - Such an embarrassment. Had so much going for him. - And my guy, Gulf last night, they did a really good podcast at NBC Sports Chicago, White Sox Talk Podcast. - Yes. - And they said, "How the frickin' Luya, he's gone." Boy, some people took that and got very upset. - Big time Twitter fight, Ryan McGuffey and Herb Lawrence. - Yes. - You saw this, right? Do you watch the thread of that? - I did, not. - Holy cow. - You know what I think, Gulf is right, 100%. - It's two Socks fans that are passionate, and I like the passion. - Yeah. - Perb and Gulf. - They love the Socks fans. - Yeah, yeah. - All right, we've got around the NFL, and also it's a Waddle Wednesday. We'll talk to Tommy coming up at 830, right here, on Cap and Jhood. - Come up, J. - Capp and Jhood are back. - And you know this, man. - Chicago's home for sports. - ESPN Chicago. - Hit both Socks, be Socks. I'm just a fan and I'm not a football developer. I love the Green Bay Packers. - The guy is from, but there he goes. - This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. - I love winning. He starts to come at a moment. - This is a really thickly built guy. - I mean, what's the answer you looking for on these things here, huh? Whoa! - It's now time for around the NFL, right here on the Cap and Jhood Morning Show. Still to come. Tommy Waddle with Waddle Wednesday, coming up at 830, around the NFL. Here's Shane Orling, Shane. - All right, when I get started with a Bears question, it was brought up on sportsman like this morning. Evan Cohen, out of left field with a take about Matt Eberfloose. Here he is. Give him a contract extension, even if it's for show. Right, because you don't want Caleb Williams to go through multiple coaches here over and over again. If it were me and I were Kevin Warren, the president, or Ryan Polls, the general manager, I would give Matt Eberfloose an extension right now by one year just to eliminate that distraction. - So there you go, Evan Cohen thinks Matt Eberfloose should get a one year extension. His co-host, Chris Canty, did not agree. - If he shows the promise that we would expect him to do, he's saying that this is the most talented quarterback that we've seen, probably since the 2018 draft class, that I don't care about giving Matt Eberfloose any more security. I don't, like we've seen quarterbacks between their first year starting and their second year starting the organization making a change, but that ultimately end up being what propels that player. If that guy is who you think he is, then he's probably gonna show enough promise to attract the best and the brightest minds and make your organization be in a position to be able to get a better head coach than what Matt Eberfloose is potentially bringing to the party. That's if Matt Eberfloose doesn't perform well as a head coach this year. - All right, so two sides of the coin. Evan Cohen thinks extend them for a year right now. Chris Canty says no, he's gotta prove it. Are you Team Cohen or Team Canty? - Well, I'm Team Canty, but Evan Cohen, this is what happens, Cap, when you're on the air six hours a day, 'cause he's filling in for green more time than not also, Evan Cohen. - Did you hear the comment of, well, this part right here? - Give him a contract extension, even if it's for show. - Who does that? - Yeah, and you don't give a contract for show. - Right, what does that even mean for show? - Right. - Did they give DJ Moore this new deal for show? - For show, but there's 82 million guaranteed. - What the hell's for show? So we don't talk about it for a year? - Now, in Evan's defense, they do this in college, basketball and football, especially in basketball. I know guys who got, they added years to the contract, but the buyout nobody knows is very small so they can get rid of 'em. Because when you go into a kid's home, Mr. and Mrs. Hood, yeah, we'd like to recruit Jonathan. Well, coach, how do we know you're gonna be there? I just signed a five-year contract extension. - I make it whacked in a year. - Sure, but that is why it's done that way. Nobody knows the terms, but they add years on so the coach can recruit. But in Ibervus's case, he's making millions of dollars. No, he doesn't get an extension, he's gotta win. - He's gotta win one and two, if you're going to extend him, it won't be just for blanks and giggles. Hey, just do it for show, just so that way, the controversy, so can't Williams feels comfortable? - No. - He's just banned Evan from our show for 30 days. - No, 30 days. - Just for show. (laughing) - Take that, Evan. I mean, Shay, you don't make deals like this just for show. What you do is it's like either you believe in the coach or you believe in the player or you don't. There is no in-between. So I'm definitely team Candy with that because if you've been listening to me, I'm all in for what Ryan Paul's has done with the Chicago Bears, but again, Ibervus has something to prove. The team's got something to prove, but definitely met Ibervus. Shay. - And look, like if you'd have to give Ryan Paul's truth serum to know the answer to this, I don't know what the bar is where Ibervus gets fired this season. I, frankly, I think it's a little lower than I think most people do. I think most people believe if he's seven and nine, six and 10, he's gone. I think he comes-- - Blue coach in the extra game. - I think seven and 10, six and 11, whatever. - Thank you. - He's gone, that's kind of what most people think. I think he is a little bit longer of a leash than that, especially with a rookie quarterback in the history in this town of-- - I think it all comes down to, how does the offense look? Like if they looking confident offensively in their seven and 10, he's gone. If Caleb, like, wow, the offense looks great, but we had some key injuries, he's keeping his game. - That's where, for me, like if the season starts and you're five and two and you're riding high, I would not have a problem with them announcing we've extended Matt Ibervus two years, whatever. At that point, sitting at five and two, and you've seen, okay, we can win these games now, and things look okay. Mid-season extension, I'm cool with. I wouldn't do it today, because if you start two and five, - Oh, the dogs are gonna be barking outside the gates of Hallis Hall. - This dog will be barking loudly. - Give him a contract extension, even if it's for show. - What? (laughing) - Come on, Evan. - All right, so there was like a-- - By the way, will you book Kathy please? I wanna get him on. You good with that? - Oh, am I here for the show too? You man, Kathy. - Yeah, you heard what he said, Shay. - Just have our programming meetings on the air, huh? (laughing) - I like Chris. (laughing) - This is Wives from Beverly. - This week, there was apparently a discovery by NFL fans of something that's been at the case since March. The on-side kick, the surprise version is dead. You now, with the new kickoff formations, have to announce your on-side kicks. You can only perform an on-side kick attempt in the fourth quarter and only if you are the losing team. So the idea of what happened in the Super Bowl between the Colts and the Saints and the Sean Payton rolling the dice with a surprise on-side attempt out of halftime will not happen at least this year but this one year experiment. Are you gonna miss the surprise on-side kick? I don't really care 'cause I don't think it happens very often. - It does but they shouldn't legislate it out of the game. That's just stupid. I just think sometimes, I know they wanna make the game safer. I think sometimes, say they go over the top with it. I mean, the football is a physical sport. It doesn't happen all the time. I don't mind it being a round cap. It's a play in your bag if you need it. You don't even see it. You might see it every blue moon. Maybe once, usually, according to my stats here, usually the late 325 game, right against 60 minutes, when the Chargers are down seven. They've come back from a 21-point deficit and they utilize it and it's a turnover, it goes to the other team and then 60 minutes comes on. That's usually how that works. - Right, like everybody's outraged by this. Oh, well, I can't do an on-side kick out of halftime anymore. I can't do an on-side kick in the third. When do you think on-side kicks happen? They happen when a team is down multiple scores in the fourth quarter. - How about when it happened in the Super Bowl? - Sure, but that's happened twice in Super Bowl history. - Okay, but why do you have to legislate against it? If it doesn't happen, who cares? Give me the right to be able to try and do it. - The new formation, the problem is the way they've changed the kick-offs. If you tried an on-side kick by surprise, the offensive team, the kicking team would recover it every time. So they can't really allow it to happen, which brings me to my next point. Is it time for the NFL to just say, if you want to get the ball back after you score, you get a fourth and 20? - What do you need all these gimmicks for? - The on-side kick is a gimmick. - It's not. It's been around since the sport started. It's still a gimmick. The surprise on-side kick is certainly a gimmick. - Well, that's usually legislative for bad teams. The only time you see that is like, again, you're against the grain, against the wall, late in the game, or teams so bad that they have to utilize it. We've seen that before, second third quarter, but it's so very rare. - I don't think they should take it out. And I know they're doing it for safety reasons. Yeah, I just don't think you should take it out. It's something that you don't see very often. It's kind of a fun play. It's like the drop kick, when you don't see that very often either, do you? - How many points you get for that? Three, remember that? - Yeah, yeah. - Long as you are. - Woody, would you enjoy a fourth and 20 to get the ball back? I did the math on it. Pre-kick rule changes back in 2018. The on-side kick was successful, 13 and a half percent of the time. Since 2013, fourth and 15 are longer as successful, 13 and a half percent of the time. - I think it's great. - You want the ball back? You get fourth and 20. - The old Chargers coach agrees. That's a good play. - Air choreo. - No, no, not the one before Harbaugh. - Oh, Brandon Staley. - Brandon Staley's all for it. How about that one? How about that one, Tommy Wattle? Fourth and 20. - Let's go for it. (laughing) - Let's run the draw, Jonathan, because they won't be expecting it. - I'll tell you one damn thing. Dennis Gentry will give you 19 and a half. - Oh, no doubt. 'Cause you knew that's what we were running. We were going four wide. - Yeah. - It's third and 17. We were gonna give the ball to Pinky and he was gonna get 15. - Let me tell you something. Dennis Gentry would get you. Almost a half yard within, man. - Every time. - Then at the end of the year, like he was averaging nine yards per carry, but if they would really only give it to him on third and long. - Yeah, that's a successful pass. - That's real fast. - That's a really fast pass. - Yeah. - Can you imagine the outrage if a team tries the fourth and 20 to get the ball back? It just scored. It's a one score game. Fans all excited. They run it to lay it hand off. Get 18. (laughing) - Hey, listen. That's old school football, Shay. - I love that. - What option on the fourth and 20? - What option did we have? I was wide right. Cause was wide left. And like, you're not, what are we gonna do? - Yeah. You and Kaz. - What do I do there, man? - I would've asked for Brian Bashnigel. He could've got the ball. Bash. - Yeah, he was before me. So I went with-- - Who was the third receiver, Wendell Davis? - No, it was Wendell, me. - And then a variety of people. - Kaz. - Kaz, Kaz was an elite special teams guy, but he didn't play a ton on offense. - No, 'cause he had so many injuries. - Ron Morris, he was struggling with injury. - Ron Morris. - Get on them any floor. - Anthony Morgan, Dennis Gentry. Yeah, you know what? Listen, with no disrespect meant to my guys, 'cause I love Wendell. He was one of my favorite teammates, if not my favorite. And what a great player. We were not gonna make you forget Alan and more and the Dunes A. That was just not us. - Wow. - Well, I forget about Alan, because Waddle's numbers are better than Alan and the second category. - You're at yards per catch. You bet your sweet ass. - Correct. - That is correct. - More with Tommy on a Waddle Wednesday on The Cap and J Good Morning Show.
