[Music] Good morning and welcome in to the Captain J. Good Morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan Jonathan Hood with you now time for Shadow No Shot and is brought to you by the ESPN bet now live in Illinois get a hundred dollars of free bets when you make any sports book wager open that account now at ESPN bat to take a morning to Shae W. Norlin good morning boys on a waddle Wednesday I'm feeling good I'd love to know the two of you were filmed the road to 24 continues on White Sox trying to match and exceed the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies record mark of 23 straight losses and hoodie this morning they are the front page of ESPN calm for not trading Garrett crochet I've told you my whole goal is the heat to turn up yeah it's turning up yeah it's it's it's really something you you have all the headlines for the wrong reasons a string of losses and no hope for the decade and no hope into next decade also this isn't getting turned anytime soon no when you're dealing with the GM of the Dodgers you're dealing with the GM of the Phillies in Kansas City and Baltimore those guys are tenure they know what the hell they're doing and you've got this tenderfoot neophyte in Chris gets as a general manager he doesn't know cap he's probably been part of trades as a player but to be able be a wheeler dealer this is why all these grades that we see online like all the Sox C plus D F hmm you wonder why because those guys are have experienced those other general managers that you dealt with ah Chris gets hey by the way I gonna throw your bone I'll I'll take a loy and they're laughing on the other side of the phone laughing just to help the kid out hey kid they just rubbing his hair it's all right kid we'll take a loy off your hands it's just pleased the he's right they are the front page of ESPN.com but the two baseball analysts that they asked both agreed that it was not the time to trade crochet you do it in the off season because of his demand for an extension and innings limits and the whole deal and that was what through a wrench into the plans so I think he'll be gone this winter I do too and there is I will ask waddle about it when he joins us at 8 30 but you're not signing this guy that's stupid he's not gonna be part of this ball club correct because if you sign him you're not gonna be contending it's not like you build around this guy by the time you're ready he's in his 30s yeah no socks and when he gets his 30s the socks will still be looking in the basement still looking up at the other teams they will it's just a fact yeah all right Shay all right bears camp so far has been light on drama but seems like drama is developing on the offensive line Nate Davis was in street clothes Anthony street clothes Davis meet Nate street clothes Davis at practice yesterday bears continue to give first team reps on the offensive line the guys like Coleman Shelton and Ryan Bates amid Nate Davis's absence even if he gets healthy you look at his history as a player he has never had a season without an injury setback and there remains the running risk of Kevin Jenkins health at guard this is not exactly a bulwark offensive line of healthy guys puts the Bears offensive line depth in question already for me so shot or no shot Ryan polls should sign free agent center counter Williams and cut date with Nate Davis I don't know anything about Connor Williams health there's a reason that no one has signed him there's a reason he's still sitting out on the street when prior to the injury was believed to be the number one free agent at his position so I can't give you an honest answer if Connor Williams is healthy and a good dude and a good fit in the room and all that sure bring him in but yeah I would not yet cut Nate Davis I would not do that that's a no shot for me only because is Nate Davis hurt where he won't play in the preseason I mean he's just in street clothes now but I mean even if it was made it sound like it was not a major deal that he will play okay I mean you know what I care about is when the bell rings that's why I care care about the most I don't know if he's gonna play in the preseason or not I just know that they feel like he's a veteran with some experience that could help a young quarterback I just don't want to go through the summer again here in the preseason talking about Nate Davis as a storyline either either he's going to be a different speaker for the team or he's not agree but also I'll say this Nate Davis is not the reason why you win or lose ball games that's just one position at right guard I mean there's a reason why they brought a clown car of offensive lineman in here early to find out who could be on this depth chart plus you're not saving anything on your cap I think it's a $600,000 saving that's nothing so yeah no I'm not unless he's a detriment in the room no I'm not I'm not doing or hurt yeah if you tell me he doesn't want he's what's the term Jake in it yeah he doesn't want to practice and he doesn't want to play okay then make a statement but it sounds like they feel like he's gonna get back on the field and he is a fairly talented cat when he plays and if it is a problem like as far as culture fit this is the new bears he'll be gone he'll be gone this is not one of those things where he keep him because of salary or keep him around because he's not a good locker room they'll get rid of him correct ass chase clay pool that is yes that's correct okay all right Kevin Warren joined wattle and Sylvie yesterday at Halis Hall talked about the future of the stadium plan Sylvie asked him how confident are you that you will get a stadium on the lakefront here's Kevin Warren absolutely I mean you know in me fortunately me coming here to the Bears I was blessed to have the challenge of of being involved with an incredible group of people at US Bank Stadium and if you saw the number of twists and turns that we went through in Minnesota that's part of it I mean that's why when you build these stadiums you focus on having them functional bowl for 30 or 40 years this is not something that you do every couple years these are complicated projects now their special projects once you get them done when you cut the ribbon and even more so when you play in them it really is special so we're exactly where I thought we would be they take time you know our team is continually working daily on working through all of the issues all the complex financial issues all the economic development issues all of the diversity and inclusion issues so we're very cognizant of it so absolutely so if you if you could could really go look at my strategic plan for this year this is about where I thought you know we would be and I have the utmost faith and Governor Pritzker I have the utmost faith faith and Mayor Johnson and and I say even Mayor Hayes here in Arlington Heights because we're the largest landowner there and and I'm just confident this is a very complex political environment just look what happened in our country in the last couple weeks I mean and you know these there are a lot of moving parts so because that I am again back to be a rational reasonable person but I'm not surprised you know there's a lot of work that we've put into it there's a lot of work to be done and I have the utmost faith that at the appropriate time we will be able to come together and work something out that's in the best interest of the state of Illinois in a city of Chicago our Chicago Bears fans and so these things absolutely take time fortunately I've run this marathon before and it's ended up pretty well you as a Bank Stadium Steel has has been voted the number one you know stadium in all the pro football maybe in all of sports but that was not done in a couple week period it took a lot of time there's a lot of ups and downs there's a lot of planning a lot of revising but at the end of the day I'm always focused on the end product so confidence there will be a new stadium but I didn't hear him say the word lakefront even one time shot or no shot Kevin Warren is accepting it's not gonna be on the lakefront I'm gonna say there's no shot yet but it's coming I personally if Kevin was sitting here with us I would tell him I think you're making a grave mistake putting it in the city you won't all that real estate in Arlington Heights you could create as wattle first coined it baradise go to Arlington Heights it's coming what about the first part of what he said douche when he said a lot there but what about the first part absolutely I mean on his confidence lakefront stadium absolutely I mean you know you know in the in the fortunately me coming here to the Bears I was blessed to have the challenge of of being involved with an incredible group of people at US Bank Stadium I don't know the beginning he was he made it seem like that it was a question are you confident that the Bears can get a stadium on the lakefront and he said absolutely right that was the beginning of it correct you know he's also mentioned the focus remains on museum campus but it does sound less assured doesn't it when he brings up the relationship with the mayor with Arlington Heights and owning the land being the largest landowners in Arlington Heights it doesn't sound like the confident and laser focus on the lakefront that we've heard previously to me he Kevin has never dealt with anything quite like this cap we don't have to be in the room to know that to deal with friends with the park he's never dealt with the with the park district he I mean it was a song and a dance I'm sure in Minneapolis St. Paul versus this because I'm sure his thought was Chicago of course the lakefront we just built right there on Soldier Field we can be able to have baradise there oh no you can't correct isn't it can't isn't Chase's dad force clay pool still running things over there and he ran the park district right yes he's the guy that did the original deal I think with the bear I don't he's not still involved I don't think so but he forced clay pool was the guy I think back in the day and then friends of the park and the park district they called all the shots not Kevin I don't have to be in the room you don't have to be in the room and I think Chicago doesn't have to be in the room to understand why that there's some red tape there baradise in Arton Heights is the spot agree you own the land agree I understand that you see as I told you Shay like weeks ago this is all politics well I'm from here kept from here we know the red tape in the politics in this city and in this state Kevin was not used to this you might go along to get along you mean him tell me I can't build my own paradise no you can't now he talked to us the park district okay well then we're gonna go over here hey brought up you know Mayor Johnson and Governor Pritzker just to get him all involved in the soundbite but ultimately it's about Arrington Heights to me because you own the land there you go you do whatever you want with it it makes sense spot a place where you can have you can do whatever you want with with baradise or over here where you have limitations which one do you choose I don't understand why he is so resistant to tailgaining and all the other things that should go part of the experience who Warren yeah like if you build down here you're not tailgating he's playing both sides that's what he's doing like Jeff he's political I'm sure he's been there but Kevin go to Kansas City and watch how the Chiefs fans do it miles and miles of tailgating for Chiefs Kingdom it's an event it's amazing he's doing he's playing both sides probably he's political - he knows cap come on now deep down he's like come on to his wife hunt but probably want to look at a condo out there in the early tonight's area Mayor Johnson was nice to me invited me over to his west side flat went down to Springfield spent time with Governor Pritzker you know that's all he's just that's a he's a front-facing person for the Chicago Bears he's just he's just talking he's walking and talking it it is what it is shaking squeezing one more before around the NFL yeah white Sox ended an era yesterday sending a lawyer menace to Baltimore in a salary dump finally getting rid of the last vestige of that much maligned container trade yuck regardless if you're a white Sox fan or a Cubs fan simple question shot or no shot we can all agree that was the worst effing trade in the last decade in this town that I mean useless you didn't win it and I didn't win either cap that whole thing just sucks no that that kid town of trade and they'll be copied we he helped us get to the 2017 and he'll say oh stop if that team was truly all in they would have gotten Justin Verlander who begged to be a cup begged begged that's who they would have gotten not can turn it because his contracts team friendly we can go get guess who they signed Brandon Morrow you Darvish see you later thanks for coming bad I don't think either one of us won that I mean a lawyer had some highlights but the most of his highlights was on a stretcher or on crutches or being helped off the field you saw that socks on 35th who's a great Twitter follow yeah he has a video goodbye that you'll all his highlights and Tim crashing into the wall pulling his hamstring pointing at his leg with Pedro dude it's hilarious so bad falling such an embarrassment had so much going for him and my guy guff last night they did a really good podcast at NBC Sports Chicago White Sox talk podcast yes they said how a frickin luya he's gone boy some people took that got very upset big-time Twitter fight Ryan McGuffey and heard Lawrence yes you saw this right do you watch the three of that I did only count you know what I think guff is right hundred percent it's just it's two socks fans are passionate and I like the passion yeah her band and guff yeah yeah all right we've got around the NFL and also it's a waddle Wednesday we'll talk to Tommy coming up at a 30 right here on cap and J come up say Kevin's Jay Hood are back and you know this man Chicago's home for sports ESPN Chicago it both sucks he sucks I'm just a fan I'm not a football about here I love the Green Bay Packers the guy is front but there we go this is not Detroit man this is the Super Bowl I love it's not time for around the NFL right here on the cap and Jay Hood morning show still to come Tommy Waddle with Waddle Wednesday coming up at a 30 around the NFL here's Shane Orling Shane all right when I get started with a bear's question it was brought up on on sportsman like this morning Evan Cohen out a left field with the take about Matt Eber Flus here he is give him a contract extension even if it's for show right because you don't want Caleb Williams to go through multiple coaches here over and over again if it were me and I were Kevin Warren the president or Ryan Polls the general manager I would give Matt Eber Flus an extension right now by one year just to eliminate that distraction so there you go Evan Cohen thinks Matt Eber Flus should get a one year extension his co-host Chris Canty did not agree if he shows the promise that we would expect him to do saying that this is the most talented quarterback that we've seen probably since the 2018 draft class that I don't care about giving Matt Eber Flus any more security I don't like like we've seen quarterbacks between their first year starting and their second year starting the organization making a change but that ultimately end up being what propels that player if that guy is who you think he is then he's he's probably gonna show enough promise to attract the best and brightest minds and make your organization be in a position to be able to get a better head coach than what Matt Eber Flus is potentially bringing to the party that's if Matt Eber Flus doesn't perform well as a head coach this year all right so two sides of the coin Evan Cohen thinks extend them for a year right now Chris Canty says no he's got to prove it are you team Cohen or team Canty well I'm team Canty but Ev Co this is what happens cap when you're on the air six hours a day because he's he's filling in for green more time than not also Evan Cohen did you hear the comment of well this part right here give him a contract extension even if it's for show who does that yeah you don't give a contract for show right what is that what does that even mean for show right did they give DJ more this this new deal for show for show but there's an 82 million guarantee what the hell's for show so so we don't talk about it for a year now in Evans defense they do this in college basketball and football especially in basketball I know guys who got they added years to the contract but the buyout nobody knows is is very small so they can get rid of them because when you go into a kids home mr. mrs. hood yeah we'd like to recruit Jonathan well coach how we know you're gonna be there I just signed a five-year contract extension I make it whacked in a year sure but that is why it's done that way nobody knows the terms but they add years on so the coach can recruit but in either of us this case he's making millions of dollars no he doesn't get an extension he's got a win he's got a win one and two if you're going to extend him it won't be just for blanks and giggles hey just do it for show just so that way the controversy so can't Williams feels comfortable no it's ban Evan from our show for no dirty day just for show that's I mean you don't make deals like this just for show what you do is it's like either you believe in the coach or you believe in the player or you don't there is no in between so I'm definitely team candy with that because if you've been listening to me I'm all in for what Ryan Paul's is done with the Chicago Bears but again Eber Flus has something to prove the teams yes I'm the prove but definitely met Eber Flus Shay and look like if you'd have to give Ryan Paul's truth serum to know the answer to this I don't know what the bar is where Eber Flus gets fired this season I frankly think it's a little lower than I think most people do I think most people believe if he's seven and nine six and ten he's gone I think he comes in the extra game I think seven and ten it's six and eleven whatever he's gone and that's that's kind of what most people think I think he is a little bit longer of a leash than that especially with a rookie quarterback in the history in this town I think it all comes down to how does the offense look like if they looking confident offensively in their seven and ten he's gone if Caleb like wow profits looks great but we had some key injuries he's keeping his game that's where for me like if the season starts and you're five and two and you're riding high I would not have a problem with them announcing we've extended Matt Eber Flus two years whatever at that point sitting at five and two and you've seen okay we can win these games now and things look okay mid-season extension I'm cool with I wouldn't do it today because if you start two and five oh the dogs are gonna be barking outside the gates of Hall as Hall this dog will be barking loudly give him a contract extension even if it's for show okay all right so there was like a nice way you book can't he please I want to get him on you good at that oh am I here for the show to you man can't he yeah you said you heard what he said check go ahead just have our programming meetings on the air I like Chris wife from Beverly this week there was apparently a discovery by NFL fans of something that's been at the case since March the on-side kick the surprise version is dead you now with the new kickoff formations have to announce your on-side kicks you can only perform it on-side kick attempt in the fourth quarter and only if you are the losing team so the idea of what happened in the super bowl between the Colts and the Saints and then Sean Payton rolling the dice with a surprise on-side attempt out of halftime will not happen at least this year but this one-year experiment do you are you gonna miss the surprise on-side kick I don't really care because I don't think it happens very often it doesn't but that they shouldn't legislated out of the game that's just stupid I just think sometimes the I know they want to make the game safer I think sometimes say they go over the top with it I mean the get the football is a physical sport it doesn't happen all the time I don't mind it being a round cap it just it's a one it's a play in your bag if you need it you know right you might see it every blue moon maybe once usually say according to my stats here usually the late 325 game right against 60 minutes when the Chargers are down seven they've come back from a 21-point deficit and they utilize it and it's a turnover goes the other team and then 60 minutes comes on that's usually how that works right they like everybody's outraged by this oh well I can't do an on-side kick out of half time anymore I can't do an on-side kick in the third when do you think on-side kicks happen they happen when a team is down multiple scores in the fourth quarter about when it happened in the Super Bowl sure but that's happened twice in Super Bowl history why do you have to legislate against it if it doesn't happen who cares give me the right to be able to try and do it the new formation the problem is the way they've changed the kick-offs if you tried an on-side kick by surprise the offensive team the kicking team would recover it every time so they can't really allow it to happen which brings me to my next point is it time for the NFL to just say if you want to get the ball back after you score you get a fourth and 20 what do you need all these gimmicks for the on-side kick is a gimmick it's not it's been around since the sport started it's still a gimmick the surprise on-side kick is certainly a gimmick well that's usually uh legislative for bad teams only time you see that is like again you're against the grain against the wall late in the game or teams so bad that they have to utilize it we've seen that before second third quarter but it's so very rare I don't think they should take it out and I know they're doing it for safety reasons yeah I just don't think you should take it out it's again it's a it's something that you don't see very often it's kind of a fun play it's like a drop kick we don't see that very often either do you how many points you get for that three remember that in the longest yarn yeah i heard no one what do you would you enjoy a fourth and 20 to get the ball back i did the math on it pre-kick for kick rule changes back in 2018 the on-side kick was successful 13 and a half percent of the time since 2013 fourth and 15 are longer is successful 13 and a half percent of the time i think it's great you want the ball back you get fourth and 20 the old charges coach agrees that's a good play air choreo no no not the one before harvaugh oh we got Brandon's daily Brandon's daily is all for it how about that one uh how about that one tommy wattle fourth and 20 let's go for it let's run the draw Jonathan because they won't be expecting it i'll tell you one damn thing Dennis Gentry will give you 19 and a half oh no doubt because you knew that's what we were running we were going for wide it's third and 17 we were going to give the ball to pinky and he was going to get 15 let me tell you something Dennis Gentry would get you almost a half yard we would every time then at the end of the year like he was averaging nine yards per carry but if they would really only give it to him on third and long yeah that's a shot of that are the shuttle path isn't high can you imagine the outrage if a team tries the fourth and 20 to get the ball back you just scored it's a one-score game fans all excited they run it the late hand off get 18 it's hey listen that's old school football Shay i love that little what what option on the fourth year what option did we have i was wide right cause was wide left and like you're not what are we gonna do yeah you and cause what do i do there man i would have asked for a brian bash nigga he could have got the ball well he bashed yeah he was before me so i i was the third receiver wendell davis uh no it was it was wendell me and then a variety of people cause cause cause was an elite special team's guy but he didn't play a con on offense no because he had so many injuries run morris he was struggling with injuries on morris good on them any for entity morgan dennis gentry yeah you know listen with no disrespect meant to my guys because i love wendell he was one of my favorite teammates if not my favorite and what what a great player we were not going to make you forget allen and more and the doomsday that was just not us wow okay well i forget about allen because waddles numbers are better than allen life time you're at yards per catch you better sweet ass that is correct more watami on a waddle wednesday on the cap and jayhood morning show welcome back to cap and jayhood you're officially elected on chicago's arm for sports esp and chicago tom waddle tom waddle former wide receiver for the chicago mary's 1989 all-madin team and afternoon co-host on esp and chicago i think he's going to start at least eight games in the national football league next year for a team that's going to give him a chance it's waddle wednesday with tom waddle listen i got a pedicure in an hour but i get back here the wheels better be spinning all right on cap and jayhood esp and chicago it's a waddle wednesday on the cap and jayhood morning show on esp and one thousand and we're streaming on the esp and chicago at and tommy's on the hotline that'd be the car x tire and auto hot red jonnie rattle rattle thunder bladder boom boom boom good morning tommy how are you good how are you good tommy you there yes i am good tommy how are you good how are you good to talk to you okay good talk to you biz are your thoughts got no um we no i could go i could definitely go i do in new york you just i just go i love the like uh probably directing this at shaymore than anyone i love the outrage at the perceived outrage that exists from some from some of us who believe that there is something to be gained by calib williams being in uniform tomorrow night and it's a nuanced conversation so that just huff and puff and blow your stack without really understanding where it's coming from i think is a little weird but you know it was i huff and puff and i thought you were like i think you took a shot at the good kid yorko was huff and puff and yesterday he said he or flew should be fired if they lose the tennessee game well that's not going to happen but i understand what he's coming from and i would just suggest just because he played ten years in the league doesn't mean he's right about everything but his perspective i believe is worth kind of but let me ask you a question tommy if they are oh this well that sounded a little point it sure cap what do you got wow man it's happening this morning we just a little over sensitive today or what good morning tommy how are you good good talk to you okay for any of us huff and puff damn it if they're detecting it's not going to play their guys and eberfluous isn't going to play tevin jankins and braxton jones and all these dudes up front you want to put katelyn about there with a suspect offensive line as it is with the backups cap this is where i'll bring the the volume down a little um this is the difference we're not the texans okay that may be a secret but it were not the texans our quarterback you know has you play them in week two why would you want to put anything on tape for that just listen okay this is all i'm going to say to you i'm not suggesting that playing kaleb williams is going to enhance his ability to read defenses or throw an anticipation any that stuff here's my presentation to you okay and again i'm not outraged by it it doesn't change my opinion of this team it doesn't change my optimism about things doesn't change how i feel about what the general manager has done and all the other stuff kaleb williams probably hasn't played from under center since he was what nine correct played lincoln riley system in oklahoma then at usc um in those situations there is no structure it's you stand out there if they show you signs of a goat maybe kirk herb street and a tire and you're supposed to decipher what played around right you don't go into a huddle you don't call the play there's no there's no cadence there's none of that stuff and if you listen to some of the complaints coming out of house hall early in camp it said hey we're struggling with cadence we're struggling with some pre-snapped penalties and stuff like that so what i would say to you cap is is that this would be a good opportunity to get kaleb some experience with some of that stuff because i was up there yesterday and it's funny there was two delay of game penalties i think and two other pre-snapped penalties and they were all the first team they weren't the second or the third team like there are a lot of really good things but procedural issues are stuff are things that they've admitted that they've struggled with so i'm just saying to you that i would not be opposed to having kaleb out there for you start the game you play three plays turn around a hand off every time but go through the process of having the play called into you and getting into the huddle and calling the play to your teammates and then getting to the line of scrimmage and getting the play called without taking a delay of game penalty you know football coaches and football people are the kings of little things matter well what is more important than those little things when it comes to running your offense so this isn't an issue of me thinking that kaleb needs to see a defense in the n_f_l_ and get the timing down these are the little things that he a hasn't done in college and beat some of the things that they struggled with a little bit at camp and they don't get as much contact with these guys as they did years ago so it may sound ridiculous to a lot of people but like you know i talked to tom fair talk to mark carrier talk to york and other people doesn't make us right but i don't think it's an outrageous concept nobody's asking for d_j to play nobody's asking for keenan to play nobody's asking for montes sweat to play but to go through the procedural issues i think there is a benefit to it and it wouldn't have i don't believe been a bad idea if that's what they did tommy if we could just take the emotion out of it because you've been really loud here this segment could you just if you don't mind we were on the morning we don't need to be you know yelling and breaking out the speakers you just put his football season well yeah but you could just you know please tone i would like to be able to just go go right down the middle here if i may sure just tell you that if the bears were not playing a hall of fame game that calip would be out there against the bills if it was just three preseason games that's what i would say this is a fourth one brings a little bit of a wrench into the works and what i'm saying is is that if this is if they start off at buffalo of bangles and the chiefs we would see him out there of course the first quarters but why not take advantage of the benefit to the bonus time that you have they are that's called training camp i was at training camp yesterday and there are some issues that they need to clean up and and like and listen cap i would just say this and again it doesn't change how i feel about it i just don't think it's an outrageous concept that your rookie quarterback who's doing something new for the first time is what would benefit from being out there and going through the procedural stuff i just don't i don't think that that's an outrageous thought especially as i said for a group of people that really you know accentuate the little things totally matter so i think he's going to get plenty of snaps going forward i i do and i like i said i don't it doesn't change how i feel about this season and everything else and maybe guys i'm just a little bit scarred because last year when they opened up the season it sold your field against their biggest rival what happened they got their ass kicked so you know maybe there's some ptsd attached to that and maybe you know and i will say this you know co-teacher flu said it's going to be a competitive training camp i think that there's a noticeable uptick in the tempo of practice i think that you know there is more contact which is all good stuff but they better be ready to play against the titans to open the season because there are high expectations for this group all right this has been a furnace blast of anger from tommy and we're gonna have to take a break here this is it because it's been too much cap this way too much so we're gonna ask tommy to bring the tone down and when we come back hopefully we could be able to have some decorum around here talk about the red okay a little bit too again a little bit too loud kind of sounding a little bit too much dripping seven and two against the cup so far this year again a little loud all right let's go all right we'll be right back you're listening to cap and jayhood follow the show on instagram at the capman and at igjhood this is esp at chicago chicago's home for sports esp in chicago streaming on twitch and youtube brought to you by the chicago ducky derby on august 7th adopted duck at duckrace.com to support our special olympic athlete it's a waddle wednesday on the cap and jayhood morning show jonathan did you say streaming or screaming? streaming okay but it's only screaming when you're on that's not true i don't understand what has happened there hopefully we can dial down the temperature because you got to actually scream and take that and i'm the loud one i'm very calm i am ready i bet you were calling last night as the the cubs were once again flailing in the queen in the queen city sits in a ranch and he slid in a second bite how about this to the cowboy jeff bratley and the reds the reds are selling too like they don't give no interest in winning because they have no interest in spending money and they're still putting it on you and you guys are throwing at our guys heads what's up with that what are you doing you're better than that why are you why are you throwing at everybody through it anybody 13 to 4 right now the reds with the advantage on the on the cub in this series 13 to 4 season no in this series it's big oh scoring wise uh tommy i gotta ask you something come on you're a smart intelligent gentleman but why would you be on there with sylvie opining that they should build around Garrett crochet by the timing they're ready to contend crochet will be in his 30s you trade him as fast as you can but that that to me is a response though cap of somebody that is scarred by the the futility which is fair that is something to do with it well from my perspective it does because they don't play checkbook baseball tommy i they're not going to get Juan Soto and Anthony so why don't they so why don't we just relegate them and take them out of the major basically they should i we so there we agree here here on the home of the white socks he has been 1000 my point is is that like from my perspective they should obviously as we've all said do business differently right they should correct but they're not they're not going to go spend so you trade your most marketable asset do this winter cycle of ridiculousness again so let's give him 125 million or whatever the deal is like glass now got and watch him pitch on a team that will not contend for several years well again like that that's my point at what point do you change your routes do you change your aim and the way you do things like this to me would be this would be like like bringing in a new approach to white socks baseball will it happen no because that's not what they do but it doesn't mean it's not the right decision i think i can't dismiss your point cap that what the the white socks will do will continue to not spend money and will continue to not develop their people and continue not to to hire the right people that trend has been intact for a while and that's probably the path that they will go but if you ask me impartially what they should do you should build around or you should start to try to build around a 25-year-old arm because you're going to trading for somebody that you hope becomes him and i know what your point is is that well that that point they'll be ready to win based on what you just said they'll never be ready to win so you're just in a loop you're just running on a treadmill there's no time that they're ever going to win until they change the way that they do business correct but i'm not giving a hundred twenty five million to Garrett crochet i'm not doing it i understand the point Tommy i guess the point is is that the ownership will not change like you're not going to have jerry riser or spinning through the nose along with young talent to be able to contend that's where you are i mean as a red spans you know what that's like where you feel like you've got young left me crazy yeah you've got young talent that you're like i could build around dollar crews i could build i can build around but again when it comes to not cutting time you don't spend the money and so this is and so the socks are the same boat the socks will not contend this decade you know that Tommy like it's not happening to Jonathan but don't you feel like they've then they've got you like now what they've done is they've got you to start to see life the way that they want you to see life so now and again cap i'm not suggesting that what you're what you're saying won't ultimately happen but now you've just they've got you in line now now you're just starting to think the way they want you to think what we're never going to win we're not going to give you a hundred and twenty million dollars because we don't pay people we in the A's are the only two organizations that have never given a player a hundred million dollar contract we don't develop people you know we we do things around at some point you got to break the cycle and why wouldn't you try to break the cycle if chris gets does have the ability to think differently than previous regime and can change the way that things have gone why wouldn't you start with a guy that's 25 years old and has pitched like an ace that's on the owner why don't think it's outrageous it is outrageous because you have nothing in your in your quiver there in terms of talent that's going to be here okay so okay well in that contracts up you will have gone yeah Garrett pitch well for us we gave him five for a hundred and twenty five now guess what he's thirty years old you're just reading you're reading the socks handbook back to them you should be able to all good teams in an environment where you can spend you may have to pay a luxury tax but you can spend pretty much whatever everybody else can in a big city like Chicago you're just reading their playbook think differently tell me okay because you say it with conviction doesn't make it right they're not going to go out and get Garrett Cole is a free agent santa on their trade for Otani that's not the way they're going to do business here so to sign Garrett crochet is taking a hundred twenty five million dollars in lighting and on fire not if you actually have the right people in place and in people that can build a baseball team but they don't and they're not going to chris gets isn't going anywhere Jerry's not so so again cap you're you're making a decision on what you should do with a player based on the ineptitude of the franchise not on what if this team wasn't the socks what would you do well you definitely would you would pay the money and keep him as part of your franchise right but then but but again all the other relationships the right decision well not well the other ownership are not the a's of the white socks that's the problem or the reds but but you're right and i'm pissed at the reds but you know again i can't as somebody you ask me and a bit not you guys but if somebody says what do you think the white socks should do i'm not going to tell you what they should do based on how they do business i'm going to tell you what i think a good franchise in their situation to do yes you are and that's my point yes a good franchise should trade him to the whatever the best farm system is that's interested like let's take as Jim Bowden told us the Orioles if they give you Samuel Basolo he's six foot four he's going to be in the big leagues next year at age 20 he's your catcher and they give you this guy a third base and they give you that guy as a pitcher you've just rebuilt three guys on your roster right and you gave me prospects Garrett crochet is not a prospect he's a proven big but he's not going to be part of the next great white socks team that's not more possibly or the two guys you just mentioned because they're prospects and when those guys if in fact they do what you think they're going to do it comes time to pay them what do you think the franchise will do based on how they've done business right if they don't get them locked up like they did with a loy and Robert early not going to then they're going to probably move okay so now we were back on the hamster wheel right exactly so you're in a cycle of so why so why so so at that point then then why do we even have a conversation about them they play tonight are they with the royals again tonight yeah yeah this afternoon you can hear that afternoon here on ESPN 1000 cap again I think we're arguing two different sides of this you're arguing based on being bludgeoned by the white socks hammer right i'm talking to you is hey let's find you know what let's do things the right way let's change let's put our foot in the ground and pivot what do you want them to do Jonathan not based on what they have done in the past but what do you want them to do if I was a white socks fan I would want them to keep Garrett crochet find a way to to extend that relationship and try to let him be the the you know the focus of of a new movement towards a better place well because you're in this position now Tommy I want them to develop young talent because you have you're a bereft of talent in the minor league system from there you bet you have to be able to spend some kind of money to be able field a major league baseball club then you need a manager then you need a way of playing the sport that's the other thing there's no style of play for the white socks so if you feel like your crochet is going to be that guy you got to tell me what if i'm an owner what's your timeline i'll pay him but how soon can you win and that's not guaranteed it's not it's not and you gave me a full list of issues and they're all valid but one of those issues well i mean what does the i got 10 000 problems and Garrett crochet ain't one of them yes you know what i mean that's a bar so that's all i'm saying you're not going to have to you know look i'm i'm not as enthusiastic about this as maybe i sound i'm just telling you if this was me i would i would keep him i would try to sign him and i would try to make things different on the south side if i was criss gets and i know you'd be bumping your head against different things and it'll drive you crazy but what's the right thing to do guys versus what is the socks thing to do Tommy have a wonderful day man i love you guys have a great day we love you Tommy yep thanks for your time anytime Jonathan
