Get that out of the way, right away, good Tuesday morning, welcome in everybody to the Ben & Woods program with no woods. Oh, I do love Jukebox Hero on a Tuesday morning. My one open pick, I got polyrhythal to my left, who's going to be working very hard for the next week. It struck me when the Jukebox Hero plays again next Tuesday. Woods is still going to be on vacation in Hawaii, and then he'll be back next Wednesday. So we got, we got six shows, me and you, some special guest hosts coming in. We'll let you know about those as the week progresses, but right now we're kind of all about the trade deadline. Polly, how was your, how was your Monday? Uh, uneventful as I just kind of sat around waiting for a potential trade to break. You know, this is just such a, such a crazy time for anybody that is a fan of the pod race, covers the pod race, watches the pod race. Uh, you just, you know, AJ Preller's got something cooking up his sleeve. You feel like he's got something cooking up his sleeve, and you know, you're just kind of waiting. You saw a couple of dominoes start to fall and you thought, alright, maybe this is it. Uh, yesterday there were a few trades that will, uh, I'm sure we're going to discuss here shortly, but other than that, just kind of, I'm going to wait it around and, uh, was kind of bored without any Padres baseball last night. It's almost unfair. The level of expectation we have for AJ Preller now at the trade deadline. It's his fault. He's already pulled off a pretty big trade, acquiring one of the best believers available in baseball, right? You know, I mean, just this week. Oh, yeah, yeah. Just on Sunday. Yet it feels now like, oh, was he sitting on his hands and doing nothing? Maybe because this has been the most active trade deadline. I can remember maybe in our lifetime. It has been really busy. Maybe not with the one Soto level of blockbuster deals, but just the sheer quantity of trades that have gone down. And there were several more that went down yesterday, including one fairly late at night. If you went to bed around, I don't know, nine o'clock, you probably missed the Atlanta Braves, acquiring Jorge Josellaire and reliever Luke Jackson from the San Francisco Giants, which seemed like a bit of a surprise, considering the Giants are, you know, we're all in this season and are only four games back in the wild card race at this point. But as you said, Polly, we'll go through all of them, but I still fully expect the Padres will make at least one more move today. It would surprise me if it wasn't to acquire a starting pitcher. The question is, which one, who's still available? So many other teams, at least, you know, half a dozen or more other teams badly in need of starting pitching at this point. And the deadline is now less than nine hours away at three o'clock Pacific time when AJ Prolers got to make that final decision and pull off a deal if he's going to do it. The player will almost certainly not comment on it as far as, yeah, we want some moves to be made. We would like some reinforcements and help to come along. They're going to say they're going to give you the stock answer. No, we're, you know, we love the group that we got and, you know, we're going to go all the way. But do you think in the back of their heads, if the Padres didn't make a move the rest of the day, the Padres players would be like, yeah, man, like, have we not proven like we're worthy of going out and getting some help and making a serious run here? Again, they made a trade on Sunday and they added to their bullpen. So I'd be disappointed if everybody felt that way. If it just didn't work out, like you could not reach an agreement and three o'clock came around, and the Padres didn't add anyone. The price tag was too high. You know, the Angels say, hey, Tyler Anderson, we want Salas and DeVries. And you're going, you're insane. No, we can't do that. And you end up with nothing. I think you still point. We got Jason Adam, got Dylan Cease, you know, at the start of the season. Got Luis Arise during the season. Still have potentially likely Joe Musgrove and Fernando Tetis Jr. Coming back almost as if they were trade deadline acquisitions at some point. I don't think anyone goes, well, Padres, don't care about winning. They're not going for it at all this year because they weren't able to make a deal. I just think it just puts them in a tough situation. If they can't add another starting pitcher, who's pitching on Friday in the opener to the series against the Colorado Rockies? You've got a pretty dead spot right now in your starting rotation. And Joe Musgrove is hoping to get back pretty soon, but you can't count on that immediately. And even if you do have someone to start, you know, that game, you still have Randy Vasquez is kind of more of a swing guy than a true starter all the way. So you just need more innings. And I don't care if it's not a premium Garrett Crochet, top of the rotation type guy. I think you have to get someone who can just make, you know, seven or eight starts down the stretch to help you out and just get to the finish line. Hopefully you win, you know, three or four of those. That would be fantastic. And then let your other guys, you know, carry the heavy weight the rest of the season. Yeah, half your rotations like on innings limits or, you know, already pitched mornings and they've ever thrown in their career, which eventually they're going to have to, you know, go past that amount. But you didn't want it all at once and all in the same year. So if you can go out and get somebody that can just eat a few of those innings that Michael King would have otherwise had to eat or whatever. Like, I think that's going to help you. It's going to preserve a guy like Michael King, who right now is pitching like one of the best pitchers in baseball since what may first or whatever. So you're going to definitely want him as fresh as possible heading into the postseason. So otherwise, you know, it's going to be kind of an awkward show today. We've had, I think, some of our more awkward shows leading up to the trade deadline because it's a constant refreshing of Twitter. Like, if I see a bunch of new posts like pop up all of a sudden, I go, ooh, something might have happened. So then I got to look at it. It would be a great day, you know, to have woods here, just kind of shooting the breeze and doing what he does and, you know, chewing up the scenery. It's a great time for him to be here. We, of course, are glad that he's getting a vacation and having some time off. He certainly has earned it and deserves it, but it's going to be a little bit tougher for the two of us just waiting and seeing if something happens. It may or may not happen during our program. Obviously 10 o'clock is still five hours away from the trade deadline would not shock me if it did. There will be trades. I would think that go down during our program. So we will be keeping an eye on that. But otherwise, we're just kind of filling time. I told my wife, this might be the toughest show that we have. I was like, I hate to say it because we have, what, six shows that we're doing while woods ease out. And I go, I really, I'm not proud about it, but I think the first show is going to be the toughest because there's no game to talk about tonight, last night. And we're just kind of waiting and refreshing and waiting some more to see what's going to happen. Like we've got plans the rest of this week and early next week that we're going to be just fine. It was today's show that I go, huh, there could be something that happened at six thirty where we just take the rundown, rip it up and throw it away because that's the news of the day now. But it might not. So until then, we'll figure it out. Last night, let's see, I anchored the 11 o'clock news filled in with Kimberly Hunt, which was fun. And did my sports cast wasn't a busy sports day other than the Olympics. Obviously in a couple of trades that went down. Polly, what did you, what did you do? What did you watch? What did you see yesterday? What did I watch? Yes. She had some of the Olympics on during the day. And that was a pretty boring day. Not a lie to you. I finally got the Pete Rose documentary started. Okay. I did watch. I finished that. You finished that. You got to start. I haven't finished it yet. Spoiler alert, I'm pretty sure I know kind of what happens with Pete. So I guess I can talk about it without worrying that you're going to spoil the ending. But man, if you haven't seen it, it's on Mac streaming on Macs. How many parts is it? Four parts. I finished part four yesterday. It's Charlie Hustle and the matter of Pete Rose. And it's spectacular. Yeah. The first episode that I watched, obviously, goes through some of his career. They're interviewing Pete as it was though. And, you know, he kind of reflects on his career and they kind of at the end, they're teasing, getting more into the gambling and lifetime ban from baseball. But Pete Rose is a fascinating character. I mean, you, you may like him. You may hate him. He's very polarizing. You may think he belongs in the Hall of Fame. You may think he should never come within a hundred miles of Cooperstown, New York. But you can't deny that he's a fascinating character in baseball history. Oh, yeah. I was struck. He is both so difficult to watch, cringy, just in his lack of, I don't know if it's self-awareness or just awareness of what is appropriate. I mean, not just in the year 2024, but even in like 1985 to 1990, he just doesn't seem to understand and whether that's because he was such just a baseball. Nothing else mattered and never really bothered to learn the niceties and social protocols of life. I was also surprised at how charming he could be. He's easy with a crowd can make people laugh, can make people sometimes at ease at times, even take some self-deprecating jokes once or twice, which is like, okay, how can you be so oblivious yet also have the self-awareness to, you know, poke at fun at yourself every once in a while. He's just contains a lot of different facets of Pete Rose, and I'm curious to get the impression of someone who's watched the entire documentary about what's your final takeaways were on it. It's just he's such an enigma. He's so tough to gauge because strictly on the field in between the white lines, he's a Hall of Famer statistically, right? Like he is one of the best baseball players to ever play the game. When you take in gambling, now you could argue, and he actually makes the argument at some point in the documentary, he goes, I wasn't drunk, I wasn't doing drugs, I didn't beat up my wife like I gambled. And is that really the worst thing he could have possibly done? It's up for debate, I guess. It's not, it's against the rules, like he broke the rules very clearly. But is that enough to keep him out of the Hall of Fame? I don't know. And then you just see him like, I mean, he went for 30 years denying it before he finally admitted. Yeah, I did gamble. And he didn't even really feel like it was that authentic. And just to lie for as long as he did, and then he had, you know, tax issues and went to prison and stuff like that, he's just like, there's so much good that he did on the field and so much bad that he did off the field. It's a real toss-up, I mean, the athletic C Trent Rose Grant covers the Reds. We've had him on, we've had him on Trent, and he goes, he leans towards letting Pete into the Hall of Fame. He goes, he's a Hall of Fame baseball player. Absolutely. If he was ever on a ballot, which he never would be on the writer's ballot, I would vote for him. He goes, odds are he's going to die, and then they're going to vote him in posthumously. And his life, not his death, but his life is going to be a tragedy. And I thought that was, that kind of sat with me, like his life is a bit of a tragedy. I think undoubtedly, I mean, for someone who had such an amazing career and put up such spectacular numbers to see what it's turned into, you know, the last 30 plus years of, you know, back of the card shop signing autographs for 60 bucks, 80 bucks, whatever it is that the Pete Rose gets for his signature and, you know, can't officially take part in any of the, not just Hall of Fame, but majorly baseball stuff. I am really not interested in litigating the question of whether Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame. I've been doing this long enough that the very first day I started in Sports Talk Radio, that was already a big topic. I mean, this is going on decades of people going, Pete should be in, Pete should never be in. Nobody's denying that gambling on baseball is against the rules and Pete broke the rules. That's very clear. It's more just like, is that worse than steroids? Is that worse than sign stealing? I think it's worse than, you know, having a drug addiction. I don't think so. I think it's been, it's been so long. I don't think it's a matter of what's necessarily better or worse. The rules for gambling were spelled out explicitly back then. There was no, it wasn't like, oh, you're doing what? We need to come up with a punishment for this. Let's make it a lifetime ban. No, no, true. But now the sevens and if stretches brought to you by draft Kings and let's go out to the Fandall bullpen, yeah, but even even now, the sign is still up. The players get the same warning every single year. It's black and white. You bet on baseball, you will be banned lifetime. They're not, it's not as though Pete Rose was unaware and like, oh, I wish someone had just told me that this was a bad idea. Steroids, you may feel just as strongly about it. They didn't even have a rule against it essentially, you know, until the 1990s and it became more of a thing. They weren't even testing for it. There was no sign like, oh, you're going to be long banned from baseball for lifetime. And when they did, they came up with penalties and it was an 80 game ban and then 160 for the second, it's not a lifetime ban. It's not a, you can't be in the Hall of Fame. That's a more interesting question to me because the reason, you know, Mark McGuire and Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez are not in the Hall of Fame is nothing to do with a rule of baseball. That's the writers deciding that they shouldn't be in Pete Rose is not in because the writers have decided he shouldn't be in. He's not eligible because that was the rule and he broke it and it was black and white. Now if you want to change it and let him in and have that discussion and change that rule, you know, after the fact, sure, we can have that discussion. But to me, it was clear. He knew what he was doing. He knew it was wrong. He lied about it for 30 years. Why would anyone give Pete Rose even the tiniest shred of benefit of the doubt on anything at all considering the character that he's established? No, I'm kind of getting into it. See, that's why it's been probably the longest lasting sports radio topic that never goes away because it does and it's because of how good he was at baseball. There was one short story. We're talking about the documentary on Max, I highly recommend it, Charlie Hustle. And that was of course his nickname because that's how he played the game. And he talks about how his dad who was a legend in Cincinnati and was a legendary football player out there. And when Pete Rose was in the major leagues, he goes out of game. I think he went like three for four or something. And the one out that I had was a ground out to second base and I ran down to first base and after the game, my dad says to me, hey, did you sprint on that ground out to second base? And he goes, I had to think about it and I said, yeah, I'm pretty sure I did. He didn't. And as he goes, my dad looked at me and he says, don't you ever effing embarrass me in this sound like that ever again. I was like, clearly, clearly there was some deep seated things. Usually they come from childhood and relationships with, you know, father, parents, whatever. Well, anyway, if you if you want to catch the documentary again, it's on Max, it's four parts, Charlie hustle. And it's always a fascinating conversation. All right, let's take our first time out. We will come back. We'll set the menu for you. Obviously, we got Padres Dodgers tonight, two game series, but always a big series when the Padres and Dodgers get together at Petco Park, we will talk about all of it coming up. Kelly Danik has our first check of traffic and one segment down what we only get about 50 to 80 to go before woods is back. We're doing great. Paulie on San Diego. Hey, happy round table days. No, it's tomorrow. That's tomorrow. Yeah, tomorrow is the round table. So we at least have to wait 24 hours for that on San Diego's number one sports station, 97 through the fan. Paul actually pointed out as we were going through the rundown before the show that this is not the first time we've had a double Jesse Tuesday on our program. But because not only do we have our regular Tuesday guests, Jesse Haggler, voice of the Padres coming up at 8.35 and if you were listening yesterday, we had was it during the Rondel report, we had the minor league baseball announcer who decided to work the lyrics of Kansas's carry on my wayward son into a home run call. He did it very awkwardly though, did not, let's say, incorporate it with the with the best skill like Jesse does on Tuesday, he's like super monotone and like not super excited about it. We were wondering like, maybe he lost a bet and he was just like getting through it. It was like, I just have to get through this, put my head down plow through the lyrics of Kansas as I'm calling this minor league home run. It was, it was kind of strange. But if you were wondering, that is the direction that we want to go with the Incorporated today with Jesse Haggler. If you have a suggestion, jump, here it is hard toward right fear. This is getting toward the fence. This is going to be carry on my wayward son. That'll be truth and you're gone. Mike Hogg would you say kiss that baby goodbye kiss that baby goodbye there for the tourists. Carry on my wayward son. That'll be truth and you were gone. That one's gone. Oh yeah. Tourist kind of jumped in and out of the song lyrics. I'm not sure what he was doing. Kind of sounds like he's like practicing to be an auctioneer. A little bit. So if you've got a suggestion, jump in our YouTube chat. The song, the lyric that you want to have Jesse incorporate into tonight's game, Dodgers game. Ooh, tough one coming off and off day. I mean, I'm going to try to keep it. I'm going to choose something fairly simple hopefully because this is obviously a phrase. It's not just a word. So I mean, we can always up the difficulty if Jesse makes it look too easy tonight. But we got to pick something that he needs to work into the broadcast tonight. I'm from Jukebox Hero because it's a Tuesday. It is Tuesday. I heard one guitar. I don't know. I mean, we'll figure it out though by the time Jesse joins us, but he's not our only we had somebody on our show. Yes, it was like musically inclined and gifted musically talented. If only. Yeah. Well, he's he's waiting for the car to pick him up for the airport. He just popped into our chat. Maybe he's got a suggestion. He's typing into our chat right now and figure out what song lyric Jesse's going to have to incorporate. He's our second Jesse on though because joining us at 735, our friend Jesse Rogers from ESPN who of course is covering the trade deadline. A lot of the activity centers around the Chicago White Sox. One of the teams that the Jesse Rogers is closest to, including whether or not Garrett crochet is going to be dealt before three o'clock today. So we'll get the latest on what Jesse is hearing coming up at 735 get his thoughts on any trades that have gone down already and the rumors that are floating in the wind on this big day in Major League Baseball before that coming up in our next segment, Paulie. We can go through some of the deals that did go down yesterday, including a pretty significant three team trade involving those white Sox, though involving those Los Angeles Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals and in particular going to have my eye on all the other teams in the National League playoff chase that are making moves to obviously hopefully they want to keep the Padres out of the playoffs. Padres want to get into the playoffs who's making the best deals in the National League right now. We'll go through some of the trades that were consummated. I believe we do have our buddy John from down the hall is going to fill in for woods on take on John coming up at 710 this morning. That is the plan. So a chance to qualify for the trip to Las Vegas here at the end of July two nights at the Rio. Our musical trivia challenge will continue in woods is absence at 710. Don't do this at 720 and then a second half of the show obviously you'll probably have more trades going down. We'll have our rindle report and get ready for Annie and Elston and by the time they're done, we'll be closing in on the trade deadline at three o'clock. And Chris will just have one hour, the final hour of what's going on and is what do they have going on today? They have a little extra for the trade deadline. Not the round table. That's tomorrow after everything's done. We're going to do a Wednesday round table at 10 o'clock to go over everything the Padres did. Tomorrow's the round table. But today from one to call it three, three 30, Kyle Glaser is going to be in studio. With Gwen and Chris and Annie and Elston as well, he'll be in there kind of as the trade deadline comes and goes and any final deadline moves that happen, you know, trade happens at two fifty eight or something sometimes it may not get reported until 30 minutes after the deadline. So Kyle Glaser is going to be in studio for that and he's just one of the best. Yeah, he's terrific. Plus it's always good to have someone who's well versed on prospects in multiple organizations because when trades go down, usually at this point in the year prospects are a big part of those deals, whether you're giving them up to get a major league baseball player or you're acquiring them and want to know who you're getting. Kyle's a good one to have in studio to talk about all of that in the moves that are going down today. So that's kind of the schedule for the 97 three, the fan crew on this trade deadline day. We'll come back though, talking about the late night deal that went down. Does this mean the giants are waving the white flag after trading Jorge so layer last night you might be surprised with what the reporting is about any other potential giants deals. We'll get to that coming up next here on Ben woods on San Diego's number one sports station, 97 three, the fan, oddly curious about AJ Preller's habits around the trade deadline. I mean, we know that AJ is already a night owl. He works late. He gets up early, you know, he's he's constantly on the phone. So how do you ramp that up to the next level around the trade deadline? Like when did he go to bed last night? Did he go to bed at all? When did he get up this morning? If he did, in fact, go to bed. I'd imagine with him listening right now. I don't think so. I think he's on the phone. My guess is that he is currently speaking to someone because phones does he have does he just have to have a charger attached at all times? That's a good question. I would think that he's got at least a backup. He's also got assistant GMs and probably like assistants who can put someone on hold while he can juggle different calls. But with the majority of baseball teams located in the eastern half of the country, if you're a West Coast general manager on trade deadline day and you want to get going when other guys are getting going. I mean, let's say the East Coast GMs are up and in their office, six, seven AM on trade deadline day, which may even be late. That's three, four AM on the West Coast, if some, all of a sudden the Rays want to pull off another trade and they get an idea at six 30 in the morning, hey, I want to get this done. Do they call AJ Preller knowing it's three 30 on the West Coast or are they sitting around going, when do you think he's up? Like, when I wait until four or until five, I mean, I got other teams that might be interested. I can't just wait around. So when does AJ go to bed? Does he go to bed a little bit earlier knowing that the West Coast GMs are probably done. The East Coast guys are asleep because it's 11 here. It's two AM there. Do I get like four hours in? I'm wondering. Will I ask him because AJ will join us tomorrow morning at eight AM, whatever they do. They don't do the Padres general manager and president of baseball operations will be with us tomorrow morning at eight o'clock to review the trade deadline moves for the San Diego Padres. And I probably will just ask him about, you know, how, how that works and you know, how, how long he stays up and how tired he is and I'm guessing he didn't, he doesn't leave his office. Like for probably a couple of days, I'm guessing there's a bed, I'm guessing there is a bed or a couch somewhere around there where he can crash for a few hours. They are getting food catered throughout the day. Right? Yeah, it's not that he can't do business when he goes other places. I mean, he always is. Yeah, but but I think you want to be around this magnitude, you know, this magnitude all your assistant GMs. And if you need someone to call up quickly, hey, all right, quick, we need to do a quick analysis. They just brought up this player and, you know, we have our, you know, we have our ideas, but we want to get deep air into the numbers before we go down that road. So yeah, my guess is they stay pretty close to the, uh, to the office at this point, probably not in Hawaii. Right? No, probably not. So yeah, uh, AJ will be with us at eight o'clock tomorrow, uh, whatever does or does not happen. Now the name Blake Snell keeps getting mentioned and it only intensified last night when the giants did make a trade. We will get into that right after you check a traffic here on 97 three, the fan from the 97 three, the fan traffic center. Here's Kelly Dannick. That a few problems to mention here. One of them is a vehicle that spun out eastbound 54 at Briarwood Road, not showing if lanes are blocked. Also northbound 805 right at the eastbound 54 connector, we're going to report this disorder debris in that left lane further north on the 805 just before come up Mesa Boulevard. Watch out for some large tire tread in that left lane in the north county. We're getting reports of occlusion on the Nodel Road on ramp to eastbound 78 and Kelly Dannick, Ben Woods, San Diego's number one sports station, 97 three, the fan. So as we mentioned, if you, uh, if you weren't up late, there was one trade that went down a fairly, uh, after nine o'clock, I think last night, uh, when the Atlanta Braves getting the gang back together from the 2021 World Series run, I think it was acquiring outfielder Jorge Solaire, Jet Pass, and tweeted it at 833, 833 right handed reliever Luke Jackson, uh, from the San Francisco Giants, uh, both were key players on that 2021 team, obviously the Braves have suffered a ton of injuries and, or a Solaire has actually been hitting well lately. It's a quick rip cord though for the Giants who had just signed Solaire to a three year deal, uh, over 40 million dollars and the Braves, I believe are taking on that money. So essentially the Giants going, so you're telling me the Giants are willing to part with somebody they recently signed a decent contract, which, it, you know, makes you think that, that Blake Snell could be next. If the Giants really think that, you know, even though they're only four games out, if there's too many teams ahead of them, whatever, it's just not their season that they would be in fact willing to trade Blake Snell. I was watching MLB Network yesterday, a number of times the Padres and Blake Snell and a potential reunion were discussed. AJ has obviously had those conversations about bringing Blake Snell, but I will, I'll throw this bit of reporting from this morning into the mix from a USA Today's Bob Nightingale does the San Francisco Giants who dumped designated hitter Jorge Solaire and his contract last night, planned to keep starter Blake Snell and give their team a legitimate shot at the playoffs. They're four games back in the wild card race with their next 12 games against teams with losing records. All right, that doesn't make a lot of sense. I was just going to say, I mean, I know Bob Nightingale is usually pretty straightforward and never wrong with his reporting, but that seems a little bit, there are no spelling errors or anything here. That's good, no arson judge, that's just, if I'm a Giants fan, I guess I'm putting myself in the shoes of a Giants fan, if I hear that, I go, wait, then why did you get rid of Solaire if you still think you're in it and you're, you're still a contender. Why are you trading on? So it, they did get a left-handed reliever Tyler Matzick in the deal. So it's basically kind of a reliever for reliever and then they get a minor league third baseman, and essentially it was a salary dump by the Giants who decided which is a sign that we're not in it. Yeah, a little buyer is remorse, but it's not as though Jorge Solaire has been terrible. He's got like 12 homers. I think he's hitting 240, but he's kind of been hotter lately. He's the kind of guy who we've already seen when he gets hot like he did in 2021 can put a team on his back for a few weeks. So if you're really going for it as Bob Nightingale tweeted, why wouldn't you keep Jorge so Solaire around? That doesn't make a lot of sense, but we'll see if the Giants truly are talking about Blake Snell in trade possibilities or they've decided they're going to keep Blake Snell. And if they do keep Blake Snell, it takes an already thin starting pitching market and makes it even thinner. The general thinking right now is that the Detroit Tigers are not going to trade. Terry scuba that Garrett crochet who seemed like a foregone conclusion a few weeks ago that he would be on the move before the deadline. Even now, it seems as though that possibility is maybe a coin flip going into today based on his contract demands, his threat to not pitching the playoffs. If he doesn't get an extension and the lack of innings that he's got left and everything that's going on with the White Sox, they may just decide better to hold on to them, maybe trade them in the off season, do something later as opposed to during the deadline right now. I don't know. It's such a seller's market. It seems like it would be crazy not to take advantage of the opportunity. And the Padres continue to be connected in discussions with Garrett crochet. AJ pro is one of the jams that doesn't seem scared off by those contract demands and everything that's gone around with Garrett crochet in the last week. But again, in less than an hour from now, we'll be talking with Jesse Rogers MLB insider for ESPN. He is he's like on the same he's like maybe one notch below Jeff passing. I mean, he is very dialed in with all of the GMs throughout major league baseball. He's one of the best guests that we get on throughout the year, but he's based in Chicago. That's where he lives. He is very tight with the White Sox and the Cubs. So he's going to be able to fill us in on Garrett crochet. You mentioned Bob Nightingale earlier and what he reported about Blake Snell, Bob also writes that the White Sox believe that started Garrett crochet likely will be moved today. And that center fielder Luis Robert Jr. will be staying due to drawing a little interest. By the way, they are now 55 games below 500, which is the worst they've ever been in franchise history. Yeah. In major league based and they've got two months left now without any of their players. I mean, this could be the historically one of the worst, if not the worst season in baseball history for a team that had like World Series designs about three years ago, shocking what's happened to the Chicago White Sox. Yeah. That was the thought that maybe that those two teams would be like this year in the World Series 2024, not going to happen, at least not for the Chicago White Sox. The pitching market got a little thinner yesterday with the trade of, you say, Kukuchi to the Houston Astros for what most observers thought was a pretty steep package of three players, Kukuchi, Joy, Loprofito, and then two fairly good prospects, including pitcher Jake Bloss, their third round pick, a pitcher on the rise from last year. I thought it kind of similar three for one package like the Padres for Jason Adam. Of course, they're getting a starter, but he's just a rental. I mean, you're talking, you know, nine starts down the stretch, a pretty, pretty large package to send for a guy that you're only going to get maybe nine starts out of and then anything in the playoffs. He'll guarantee that he'd even be in their playoff rotation. He's just a, you know, fourth type starter for them going forward. So that tells you where the price tag right now is for starting pitching and how difficult it's going to be. If the Padres were to have made that deal, I would say, is that a de Vries or a Salas? I know. No, but I'd say it's more like what they gave up to get Jason Adam, you know, their three or four, their number three or four prospect, another prospect and another decent player, kind of in the mix, three for one sort of deal. So Kukuchi's off the board. Frankie Montes is also off the board as many wave the white flag when they trade him inside their own division to the Milwaukee Brewers, who also need some starting pitching help. But I thought the most interesting trade from yesterday was the three way deal with the White Sox, the Cardinals and the Dodgers. And this one, a little bit frustrating in that the, the Dodgers landed Tommy Edvin, who is, of course, you know, another San Diego guy going to the LA Dodgers. Fantastic. And he has not played all season long, but he is on rehab assignment after risk surgery and is expected to return soon. Fantastic defender at multiple positions around the field can come through with a clutch hit or two. Didn't he walk off the Padres like twice in a row last year, something like that? I know he, he, uh, homered off Hader, walk off, home run off Hader to sure, um, and then because there was a three way deal, they also improve their bullpen by getting Michael Copac. Now the Dodgers were going to do something. It's actually whatever. It's fine. They, you know, Edmund and Copac aren't the scariest of two players. They do make the Dodgers better. What frustrated me, those, how well the Cardinals did in this deal because essentially forgiving of Edmond who hasn't helped them all season long and one prospect, they got both a starting pitcher and Eric Fettie from the white Sox and Tommy fam returns to the Cardinals to boost their outfield. So a team that is right there chasing, you know, on the Padres heels in that wild card race, they didn't give up a ton of what they've had in order to get better down the stretch. That's a, that's a trade that concerns me a little bit. That was kind of an a, a move by a John Moseliak, the general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, getting more than giving up in a clever three way deal with the Dodgers and the white Sox. Yeah, that would be another question. I would love to ask AJ Preller. Maybe at eight o'clock tomorrow morning when he joins us, when you see a division opponent like the Dodgers making moves, now nothing earth shattering. No crazy move, but moves. Does that add a little bit of pressure? Does that make you feel like, all right, we got to get, we got to get something going here. I don't know. If you can't spend your life chasing the Dodgers, but we kind of are. We have, we have been, I think you're more worried about what the Cardinals and the Mets and the Braves and the, um, Diamondbacks are all doing because those are the teams that are, are probably the ones that are going to be more likely to keep you out of the playoffs than the Dodgers. Yeah, I, I would love it if the Padres won today and tomorrow and made a run and could win the division. And then we could focus on the Dodgers, but right now in the realistic world, we're living, you're more worried about what the other wild card contenders are doing and you need to keep up with those Joneses and let the other, you know, the Smiths of the Dodgers, they're going to do their thing and you just hope when, you know, playoff time comes around like you did a couple of years ago, if it comes down to a series, you can beat them head to head, but the chances of running them down over the 162 game season still not very high at this point. So I'm, I'm more concerned about what teams like the, the Dbacks and the, the Mets and the Braves are doing. So the Braves get better yesterday with Jorge Solaire and Luke Jackson. The Cardinals get better with Tommy fam and Eric Fettie. The Mets have picked up a couple of relievers. They haven't done a ton yet. They did get Jesse Winker from the nationals. We talked about that yesterday. The Dbacks have picked up what? Just a reliever. A.J. Puck from the Marlins. Yeah. I feel like they might have something still to do, especially after a dramatic come from behind win last night. That was kind of a, if your scoreboard watching had that one already chocked up in the L column to the Dbacks. And six nothing in like the first two innings really trail the entire game and then scored five in the bottom of the ninth and get a walk off home run from Corbin Carroll to come back and beat the nationals nine to eight and pull within a half game of the Padres and the Mets for that final wild card spot, which is Braves half a game ahead of the Padres and Mets half a game ahead of the Diamondbacks game ahead of the Cardinals, two games ahead of the pirates. It is absolutely jam packed with six teams in a week. You can completely flip it. The Pirates could be the wild card leader and the Braves could be in last in the wild card race. So there's a lot to talk about. I'm doing some scoreboard watching. We'll talk about what happened in baseball last night coming up. We'll also play a little take on John Flint. Our buddy from down the hall is going to come over and give you a chance to qualify for a trip to Las Vegas. If you want to get on early, feel free to call in 833-288-0973. We'll take on John in our next segment, 833-288-0973 and we'll start looking ahead to the Padres and the Dodgers and the hope of getting a couple of starting pitchers back as well even if you don't make a trade all coming up then it's Paul. Dodgers tonight and tomorrow, and then three against the Urksome Colorado Rockies, who came in to Pekko Park the last time. You swept with San Diego Padres. Yeah, you can't, yeah, you got to, you got to pay them back at this point. You can't just go, you can't just go one in five against the Rockies at home this season. That's not going to get it done. When was that? May. Yeah, I think that was back in May. It was a dark period for your 2024 San Diego Padres when the other Rockies came into May, right after the Dodgers, stuck it to them. So it's another Dodgers. The Dodgers Friday, Saturday, Sunday, May 10th, 11th, 12th, and then welcomed the Rockies down and got swept. Certainly not getting an easy pitcher tonight. Tyler Glass now, who's back from the injured list. I think he's made one or two starts. You know what? You know the Dodgers, though. No, they're getting Matt Waldron tonight. Love it. You know, and Matt's been pretty consistent. He's had one, one or two bad innings, his last couple of starts that have heard him. But if he can get that knuckleball locked in, obviously, he's been just about as good as anybody the past couple of months of the season. Strikeouts have been down a little bit. Yeah. Yeah. Six, seven, eight strikeouts a game. You were winning money on that every week. But yeah, the numbers have been down a little bit in terms of the strikeouts and the swinging minute, but he's still giving you a solid five, six, maybe even seven innings. So yeah, yeah, even in the starts where he had a bad inning, he bounced back and got through like six. So he's been pretty solid, we'll see. And then tomorrow, a 540 start, Clayton Kershaw, what I'm making is what see his second or third start of the season, we'll go up against Dylan Cease in what is a marquee matchup. I know the Padres are planning to have a celebration for Dylan Cease is no hitter. That's actually tonight. I think in pregame ceremonies, I saw before the game because obviously you don't want to do it when he's pitching. So they'll have a little pregame for Dylan Cease. But if you actually want to see him pitch, that'll be tomorrow's game and we're actually going to give away some tickets for tomorrow's game for start for Dylan Cease since the no hitter. So stay tuned. That'll happen sometime between now and 10 o'clock. And then a Padres go back on the road and then they come back home and they've got the Pittsburgh Pirates, which is going to be a big series. Obviously the pirates are still well in wild card contention and a really good American league team in the Minnesota Twins who are coming to Petco Park. And by the way, the Padres have provided with some of the giveaways that I have here for that homestead, including the Gwen Henley, they call it the Henley Jersey. I'm not familiar with the Henley name, but just looking at it. It's like the three button. Yeah, it's like a t-shirt, three button kind of t-shirt type Jersey, Jersey, maybe that is the Monday, August 12th game. This is first 40,000 fans in attendance are going to get the 1999 Tony Gwen Henley, Jersey presented by ServPro celebrating the 25th anniversary of Tony Gwen's 3,000th career hit and it comes in five different sizes. So you've got some different options when you walk in the gates, but be sure to be one of the first 40,000. That's the series opener against the Pirates and then they got the Manny Machado collectible pin for the game against the Twins on Tuesday, August 20th. That is also for the first 40,000 fans in attendance, Manny blowing a big bubble with the City Connect colors, pretty cool Manny Machado pin as part of the giveaway as well. And then I've got the Hassan Kim gold glove bobble head as well. I don't have the date. When's the date for that one? I don't see that on my sheet, but that one's coming up as well. Is that one that was recently added? No, I think that's been there all season long. I mean, when they played, remember that commercial where they, you know, they had everyone walking around the beach and showing off all the giveaways. They had it on a Frisbee. They didn't have like, they didn't have it yet when they were filming the commercial to show it, but they knew it was going to happen. The Hassan Kim. I think it's a, uh, it's a theme game. Oh, that's a theme game one. And that's this Friday against the Rockies. Oh, the Hassan Kim gold glove theme game bobble head. So he is looking sharp. I mean, he's wearing the suit. He's never in there. He's got like a leather, a brown leather suit that he is wearing in the picture. I'm looking at it. It looks brown on the, um, on the bobble head that I'm holding though, brown would make more sense being it's a pot raise color. So that's what the Padres have coming up in their next couple of homestands. But again, starts tonight, 640 first pitch, 540 eco water. So Cal pre game show with our pal Sammy levered, uh, coming up later this evening. If you want to join us for take on woods, which is going to be take on John today, give us a call right now. E three, three, two, eight, zero, ninety seven, three, probably get it started, uh, fairly soon here. Johnny usually comes over a little bit early. So if you want to get in, you should call now eight, three, three, two, eight, eight, zero, ninety seven, three, uh, John Heyman had a quick update yesterday. Not really. I mean, he tweeted about you, Darvish update, but it wasn't an update, uh, nothing that we didn't really know. He said the Padres still have hope for you to return this summer slash season, uh, the, you know, in communication with him, but he remains obviously on the restricted list. And, uh, you know, apparently what, whatever you want to think, and we don't know what's going on with you internally, the Padres consider what you has done to be a very classy stand up thing. Like they would have let anybody go to deal with whatever he's dealing with. And they probably wouldn't have expected him to also give up his salary, but he thought, you said, no, I shouldn't, you know, I should do this for the team if I'm going to be gone and not with them. So it would be the alternative because we don't see this too often. It's not. Really not really. Yeah. The eternity. There is a bereavement list. There's a paternity list. I don't know which one would apply what's going on with you, Darvish, but, um, you get paid with him to live, you get paid when you're on all those lists. This is one where you actually don't. And maybe, you know, it gives you a little more flexibility like, okay, if I need to extend it by more days than major league baseball allows, I don't feel pressured to return after seven days or whatever it is. So you remains on the restricted list, the Padres, according to John Ayman, still have hope that that he may return at some point this season. But we, you can't count on that at the trade deadline. You know, hope is not a strategy for a pitching rotation. We saw what happened in 2021 kind of fueled by hope and then retreads like Vince Velasquez and Jake Arietta and that season fell apart as fast as any season you'll see fall apart. That was a combination of, yeah, not being aggressive at the trade deadline. And then like within two or three days of the deadline passing, like two pictures of Ryan, whether like a couple of guys got hurt and you're just like, we are absolutely screwed right now. And hopefully that doesn't happen this year, but you can't, you just can't assume that everyone's going to be healthy the rest of the year and then, oh, well, I mean, if they were and Joe Musgrove came back and then you Darvish came back, then yeah, Padres probably don't need another, you know, fifth starter because they're going to be fine. But you cannot assume that everyone's going to make every start. In fact, it's probably safer to assume that at least one guy is going to get hurt. It miss at least some time. If not, you know, the rest of the season, that's, that's majorly pitching nowadays. That's just, that's just smart baseball to assume that someone's gonna get hurt the playoffs. They've been short on starting pitching. Yeah. I don't know how much you Darvish has been working out and throwing while he's been on leave, if at all, if he does come back in September, what's he going to provide? You don't know. Right. And even if you're betting on Musgrove and Darvish coming back, I still think you need another starting pitcher. All right. We'll keep talking about this. Obviously, as we lead up to the trade deadline at three o'clock today, right now though, let's get to our game. Let's put a little take on John. It's time for take on woods. What? What? All right. Homestand starts tonight and we'll talk to Johnny again tomorrow for a little more take on John. All right. Let's let's take a timeout. We've got don't do this coming up Olympics always seems to provide a don't do this moment or two every single day this time a broadcaster in hot water. We can get to that. And maybe one of the toughest baseball, like moments I've ever seen yesterday, you know what I'm talking about if you saw gnarly we'll get to that coming up next after you check traffic with Kelly here on 97 three the fan. Don't do this. It's time for don't do this. What were you thinking? Three stories from the world of sports that make us all shake our heads. How many times do I have to tell you? I'm sorry. I fudged up guys. You idiot more on the apple sometimes does far fall from the tree. Don't do this. Do not tweet that with Ben and Woods. I like a Nickelback song or two on 97 three the fan. Don't do this is brought to you by the craft taco in Sorrento Valley. The craft taco has some of the best quality tacos in all of San Diego. Go to the craft taco.com. Take a look at their happy hour specials today, the craft taco dot com. Broadcasters today. Well, you know, they need to be a little more careful with their words. What may have flown 30 years ago, even 10 years ago, doesn't necessarily work out today. And I'm starting. Don't do this with an Olympic broadcaster who's been sent home taken off the air from Euro sport, Bob Ballard, who was covering the the swimming competition in Paris and is being criticized for what are being called outrageous comments, at least one British swimmer outlay labeled them outrageous as he was calling the four by 100 meter freestyle relay for the women. And Australia won the gold. Mario can't Callahan, Shana, Jack, Emma McKian and make Harris, Ballard was heard saying on the broadcast after it was over. Well, the women just finishing up. You know what women are like hanging around doing their makeup. Hmm. I see a quizzical look, I'm going to bring the massaging, there you go for sure. I feel like that's something that would have gotten a grown maybe like 10 years ago. But wouldn't necessarily have taken a broadcaster off the air completely. Yeah, stupid thing to say then. Yeah, just like it is now, but I don't know that he loses his job back in the day. Yeah. I mean, I certainly get it and these are the top level athletes have trained intensely for years to get to this point and it certainly makes no sense to belittle or diminish or say anything negative at that point. It doesn't make sense. It's not, it's not good broadcasting. I will say that it is very poor timing, poor choice of words inappropriate in that situation. I don't know that it's like cause for like never getting a chance to broadcast again like completely done in my mind. I don't know. Is, would that be going too far in this situation? I don't know. I mean, has he issued a statement? I have not seen it said it was never my intention to upset or belittle anyone. And if I did, I apologize. I am a massive advocate of women's sports. I shall miss the Euro sport team dearly and wish them all the best for the rest of the Olympics. Yeah. I mean, he doesn't have to never work again. Yeah. But stupid comment. Stupid thing to say. Yeah, I was dumb. That was just a dumb, unnecessary comment. That's what lands you on. Don't do this. Right. All right. I got a story here. Colin Jost from Saturday Night Live. I think he is fantastic. He does the weekend update with Michael Shea, super funny guy. And he's been part of NBC's, shocker, NBC, their Olympic coverage. The Olympics coverage has had a ton of cameos from guys like Peyton Manning, Snoop Dogg, and just a bunch of celebrity commentators. And Colin Jost, he's actually not in Paris for the Olympics. He is covering the Olympics in Tahiti. He got the surfing assignment. All right. I mean, Paris is cool. And you know, I've always wanted to go to Paris and be fun. There might be some foam. Like you're not there for the opening ceremonies. Yeah. I mean, Tahiti's a really good assignment and that's what they're giving you. That's a, if you're getting paid to be there, that is a really good assignment for Colin Jost. Yeah. You can't complain too much. So, when you're covering a surfing competition, it is probably wise to be aware of your surroundings. And Colin Jost posted a picture on Instagram yesterday about his, with his foot in the picture. And he said that he has been to the Olympic medical tent more than any of the athletes there in Tahiti as he's covering the surfing competition because he got caught up with some coral reef. And coral reef is extremely sharp and will mess you up. And he's got bandages on three and a half of his five toes. And he, I don't, I guess he was just walking through some water or whatever, maybe step on something. Well, I saw his bed is, is he got the, like the sports caster, like blazer and top on, but then he's got a bathing suit on the bottom and just bare feet. So he was trying to go casual and funny, but apparently when you walk onto the coral into Tahiti, doesn't work out, well, you were telling me, and this shocked me, who Colin Jost is married to. Yeah. Scarlett Johansson. Really? My number one. Oh, yeah. Black Widow. Yeah. They've been together for a while now. I think she was posting one year and they met and fell in love and they've been married. They're like very happy together. I mean, he's not, I mean, he's not abnormal looking or anything, but he's a good looking guy. Successful. He's funny, but he's not. You know, I mean, I'm not saying I am, but I just, that surprised me that those two are happily together a little bit. I don't know. Very much so. Yes. Love is love. Yeah. Love is good for him. Good for him. All right. Finally. And I mean, this is obviously elements of don't do this, but I gotta give it a do do this. Do you saw the video? That happened yesterday when the Orioles hosted the Blue Jays and James McCann of the Orioles. And this was fairly early in the game, right? Yeah. Took a fastball from Yariel Rodriguez right to the face to force in a run. Tough RBI. It hit off of his nose, knocked his helmet off, broke his nose completely. I mean, the blood was gushing and I mean, I know that people who are are squeamish and I did show it on television last night with a warning like, hey, if you are your squeamish, you're going to want to close your eyes for a second because this is kind of gnarly and gruesome. I know people don't like that. I didn't even want to put it up on our YouTube stream. Yes. That I mean, maybe I'm just a whim, but I get a little not queasy. I just I don't need to see that. I don't need to see the slow motion, arms or legs bending and breaking in ways they're not supposed to move and and I didn't need to see blood just pouring out of this guy's face and a blood soaked towel. But the do do this is what happened next. I mean, surely he left the game. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, he's down on the ground. They're treating him. You're hoping he's not like permanently damaged, you know, nothing with his brain or skull or anything major concussion. I mean, you were absolutely terrified for immediate medical concerns. They treat him. He like insists on going to first base. It's like, yeah, you got to come out of the game. You're bleeding all over the place. They jam like gauze up both of his noses in nostrils. Like, I mean, they get must like try to get his nose back into place after it's been broken. Goes out. Not only finishes the inning by running the base paths stays in place. The entire nine inning game with cotton jammed up his nose in order, by the way, it was the first game of the double header. So he knows his team kind of needs him. And he was not going to be taken out of that game for any reason. That's got to be a pretty inspiring thing to see if you're a teammate that you're guys willing to go out there after that happens. And unsurprisingly, the Orioles went on and won that game 11 to five, although they did lose the second game with the double header. And that is cool. And do do this for a Tuesday. That was don't do this with Ben and Woods on 97 3 the fan. What's going on with the trading deadline are the White Sox going to trade Garrett crochet. Could it be to the San Diego Padres? We're waiting and wondering what are the tricks does a J Preller have up his sleeve before three o'clock today and without further ado let's go right now to someone who is obviously having a very busy day he's one of our absolute favorite guests MLB insider for ESPN Jesse Rogers is back with us and Jesse I know there's a lot going on obviously today just give us kind of an update on kind of what you're hearing this morning especially centered around Garrett crochet someone that the Padres have shown interested in but of course it's come with a lot of complications last few days. Good morning Jesse. Yeah good morning to you guys yeah I'm as of this moment I wish I had better info I'm getting some mixed signals about crochet at this very second I'm not sure that he's going to be traded but I will tell you when I woke up this morning and start making a few calls or texts I guess I thought that he was so within a couple hours I've kind of changed my tune on that so I guess it's still possible but right now I'm thinking it may not happen which means it will definitely happen in the off season but we don't care about that we care about the deadline today so I guess I guess if it's going to sort of happen under the radar at the last second the Padres are as good as any team to choose here I know they've been scouting him and AJ Preller is pretty good at the flight of hand move so I'll leave open the possibility but in this moment this very moment I'm not sure that he's going to get moved so if it doesn't happen presumably it's because Chris gets thinks he can get more because of the the innings restrictions because of crochets comments about needing a contract extension and not pitching in the playoffs you know it's a sellers market right now but crochet in some ways Jesse kind of tied the hands of the white socks a little bit yeah he absolutely did it was all very strategic it's a cutthroat business agents are cutthroat executives they're cutthroat it is what it is and so yeah he put it out there that he wants an extension to pitch that extra month and I get it I think more people get it then back in the day when we're like what do you mean it's the playoffs you got a pitch but you know what you have to stand up yourself and and here's the thing if he stays in the white socks okay they are going to ramp him down and probably shut him down at some point if he was traded to a team not in contention they would probably do the same thing so like you have to understand teams just like in 2012 with the nationals and Stephen Strasburg team the the team shut him down so it's not like it's not on the mind of executive it's just that we have a chance to win the World Series you're gonna want to push the guy but he has muddied the the trade waters here for sure probably enough that he may not get moved but I will tell you the back and forth between the sides kind of had me thinking late last night they got to get a mile just to just to move on from this but again it's just two more months teams going nowhere they can always do it in November so I think yeah full value might come in November when a team training forum knows now he's built up his innings I don't think is I don't think he's trade value is going to lessen the next two months like people know who he is now I think he's established himself so I think he's taken why not open it up to 2019 instead of maybe just a few that will use him the right way because I don't think anyone's giving him an extension right now I think the answer would be they would use him down the stretch and then go ahead and shut him down even if their team made the playoffs I get that it's smart baseball you're out of it far out of it if you the white Sox and you trade away some players what wouldn't you I mean it's not going well but at some point I mean they're getting to the really embarrassing level so I mean 15 game losing streak out of 14 game or early historically bad season and now they're facing a potentially the last couple of months with you know nothing but you know minor league call ups and you know fill ins for the rest of the season this could get historically ugly Jesse oh there's no doubt I've been there the last little while to been there all season to be honest being based in Chicago I was there yesterday saw Bobby hit an eighth inning grand slam here's a here's a note to pitchers don't walk the two guys in front of Bobby when you're trailing when you're leading by a run it is one bad thing after another and now they lost their closure trading copek they lost their second best starter and Betty more more are going to go today whether it's crochet or not it's a disaster but I guess in some ways what's the difference if it's a hundred and ten hundred fifteen hundred and twenty although you know I don't think you want that under your resume the most losses in the history of the game so I guess you want to avoid the one twenty one twenty one mark but yeah it's it's embarrassing the owner held the press conference last week I'm sorry last year that will go down in history when he said I'm I'm doing what I'm doing because I think this is a quick fix and that he said that when he hired Chris sketch we I think we can get right back in it and here a year later they're going to challenge for one of the worst teams in history so I think for Chris gets the new GM it's like what's the difference let's rip off the Band-Aid get as many prospects in as we can and just and just move on from there talking to ESP and MLB insider Jesse Rogers here so if crochet doesn't get moved and you know that you're not positive about that doesn't look like the Tigers are going to move scuba we saw some reporting today I thought after the giants traded so layer that they might be selling but I saw some reporting today that they're going to keep Blake Snell and still try to make a push to the playoffs what pitcher you know Kakuchi was traded yesterday what pitchers do you expect starting pitchers to be traded today because that's what the Padres and several other teams are really looking at most intently here before three o'clock Pacific I mean check clarity at the top of the list he is absolutely at the top of the list and you know I don't think the Padres want to take on a lot of money that's why crochet kind of made sense without the extension of course clarity makes sense rental you kind of used up a lot of your prospect capital on Jason Adams you'll have to use more on on flarity but it's obviously a two month rentals a little bit easier of a thing to swallow here so I'm not I don't I don't have any instant information on the Padres in on flarity just would make sense he is absolutely going I kind of know what the Tigers are up to the fact that they scratched him last night means they must be closed but even if they hadn't scratched him I still think they were going to trade him Scott Harris the the president there is kind of indicated to all parties that he doesn't think they're going to win this year and maybe even not maybe even not next year I think Scott Harris and the Tigers are really in it for the long haul trying to build what could be a monster eventually in the Al central the Detroit Tigers is a is a coveted job among executives for a lot of different reasons the Al central is not that difficult of a division most years this year it's a good one and and if the Illich family will spend it's it's it's and they have fans there that will show up it's a good job to have but there's no reason to rush it so I think clarity is at the top of the list of players to be traded I think at the reliever markets really going to move after that like you said we've seen starters go there's probably a couple others that will move but but clarity is at the top of the list and then you're going to see a bunch of relievers go including Tanner Scott and and Kyle Finnegan in my opinion and and we saw what Jason Adam and Estebes brought back to their team so I think the reliever market is is is pretty you know plentiful in terms of getting getting prospects back and I expect that to move more than the starters today and I thought the most interesting trade yesterday was that three-way deal that also involved the White Sox with Eric Fettie and Tommy Pham going to the Cardinals with the Dodgers then picking up Tommy Edmond and Michael Copec a lot of the reviews were like the White Sox didn't get enough especially with what the price tag is for for starting pitching what was your kind of analysis of that deal. Yeah I mean I I defer to the experts in our our own at ESPN said the same thing the two prospects that are in the minors one's out for the season with an injury but both are not highly rated the one majorly player Miguel Vargas I think could be good the numbers don't look good right now with the Dodgers but it's really hard to break in as a young player with the Dodgers you look at what Michael Bush did he got straight he was blocked in LA comes to the Cubs he's a candidate rookie the year Miguel Vargas could blossom on the White Sox by we're you know getting 500 bats no pressure but yes it still wasn't enough I think Chris gets sort of you to this way Eric Fettie kind of came out of nowhere for them signed from Korea seven and a half million this year seven and a half million next year Tommy Pham appeared in April out of nowhere like he he took two guys that appeared out of nowhere and turned them into three prospects only problem is first of all don't forget about Michael Copec who could be a valuable late-ending reliever and the fact their matter is Eric Fettie is really good I mean you got to get past the fact that he appeared out of nowhere and realize you have a talent that a lot of people want at a nice price for this year and next and I don't think you maximize that value the way it was described me is yes if Fettie was a rental this year maybe the deal makes a little bit more sense but the fact that the Cardinals get him for next year as well White Sox did not do enough I think most people are panning the Astros and the White Sox for their returns they got for their for their deals yesterday last thing before you go Jesse obviously we've seen a very active trade deadline I think there's a number of reasons for it a lot of teams still in contention obviously no more you know non waiver trade deadline so you've got teams being more active are those changes good more playoff spots available do you think this is good for baseball the way it's set up or would you make more changes to the the trade deadline rules in the future yeah that's a good question I was I actually wrote an Olympic thing and when they have the Olympics in four years of baseball players playing it they're gonna have to change the trade deadline and I was talking to someone about that like once they change it once they might stay you know sometimes you're forced to do a change and then you realize that's the better way of doing it I think it's still evolving it's still early to know if this is the right way to do things with so many teams in it you know we're gonna still see what baseball wants is a lot of traits and there was a feeling with so many teams in it now with a third wildcard that there wouldn't be as many sellers but we always say that like on June 1st and then come July 30th okay the match aren't really a contender the Cubs aren't a contender I don't think the Giants are like it all kind of separate there'll be those odd years where you know 13 out of 15 teams are in the wildcard or the division hunt but and a month ago we thought this could be one of those years and there wouldn't be a lot of trades but we've seen a bunch of trades we're gonna see a bunch now so I think the league would say no it's okay the system's working but there's going to be a few of those years where it really is a seller's mark and there's not that many trades and and we'll all be critical but I think we're seeing enough you know maybe not the biggest names are moving we thought Peter Lonzo and J.D. Martine is at one point but the Mets got back in it so I think the jury is still out if this system is working but I think they're okay with what they're seeing this year Jesse really appreciate it I know it's a busy day thank you so much for your time this morning and and hopefully everything breaks well for you at least today thank you guys for having me on it should be an interesting day one thing about the Padres man I have never seen a streaker team that I mean how many times have you guys thought they're in it they're out of it they're in it every week you go back over there last two months it's it's essentially an unending string of five and oh oh and five five and oh oh and five seven and one oh one and seven twelve and three oh and six five and one I mean it's there's no let's win one lose one win one lose one it doesn't happen for this team yeah it makes for good talk radio I will tell you yes it does it also it also dries is crazy and cray it dries is crazy thanks Jesse for sure alright guys take her Jesse Rogers ESPN MLB insider it's not us we're not the only ones we're noticing how unbelievably streaky it's so ironic that Mike shilt pushed back me the rollercoaster terminology when it was probably a little early in the season to do so because it has been the most rollercoaster of a season maybe that you've ever seen for a baseball team the definition of a rollercoaster I mean got it maybe you should ask him we get on Friday exactly no really mind is it been a rollercoaster has it really been it's been the rollercoaster like a carousel you know you go up you go down you go up you go down so the the reporting from Jesse and and he doesn't know but he's getting the sense the Garrett crochet will not be traded which may leave Jack Flaherty as the biggest name now it wouldn't stun me if AJ pulled off a deal for Jack Flaherty but he's not one of the names that I've seen consistently linked with the Padres other than you know Padres need pitching and he is a pitcher specifically we've heard about AJ's talks about Garrett crochet we've heard a lot of rumblings about Blake Snell but of course the reporting is this morning that's not going to happen either who is left for the Padres to go out and get that is actually on their radar remember you're going to match up with the team that you're talking to as well you may want a guy they may just have no interest in what you're offering and that pretty much torpedoes a deal I saw that with the Yankees this morning that they're kind of out on crochet simply because White Sox don't really match up and they don't really think that there's anything to talk about with the New York Yankees that could happen with the San Diego Padres considering how much of their farm system they've already dealt all that stuff with crochet is just fascinating to me because I'm listening to Jesse like I get where he's coming from I've got a scary thought or he's coming from I've got a scary thought of how these contract negotiations will start playing out in the future telling me he gets traded to a contender and he's not going to want to go out there and want the ball and try to go get a ring all right let's play this out let's check traffic I'm going to play this out the last couple of minutes this hour coming up next year on 97 3 the fan seems most of our problems have been in the North County at a couple of problems here south on set of 15 right around the Rancho Parkway wishing involving four vehicles they're all over the right shoulder watch out for people walking around move over a lane if it's safe to do so also pick up truck up fire westbound 5064 Rancho Penisquitos it's over to the right shoulder I'm Kelly down at the Fenner Wood San Diego's number one sports station 97 3 the fan so this applies to really all sports but you know baseball a little bit now I think football certainly when an athlete is trying to get a new contract one of the strategies they often use is what they hold out from training camp you know okay well I'm not going to show up until I get a new contract hold out from spring training yeah I mean you don't see it as much in baseball with the guaranteed deals but it's happened before what does the team really think about that though oh great you're you're not no chance of getting hurt and you'll probably be ready anyway it's not you're not putting that much pressure on missing cactus league games or missing preseason NFL games when does the when does it really hurt if you're not going to play you're going to hold out from the playoffs yeah now that applies pressure on a team like oh you mean you're not going to play in the playoffs unless we give you a new contract we got our shot now to win the world series but if we don't give Garrett crochet seven years and 242 million dollars he's not going to pitch for us now there's some pressure to get a deal done if I'm an agent I look at that and go why am I using my leverage you know at the beginning of the year when no one cares use it at the end of the year and and obviously that also though can hurt the player because you make your your reputation in the playoffs right you you make history the reason you have gotten into the sport you know presumably is for your chance to win a world series or a Super Bowl so to threaten not to play when you have the opportunity to do that is very telling as well but it's also I am four players getting their bag man that just I don't know if I'm just like still got a bad taste in my mouth from the Josh Hader experience here and him not wanting to pitch you know three games in a row or anything like that and we saw how all that played out but I'm just going huh you just got traded from like let's say the Padres traded for like you got traded from the worst team in baseball maybe one of the worst teams in major league baseball history you get traded to a contender and you're just like I'm good I mean we were mad that Josh Hader couldn't come in for a fourth out in the postseason can you imagine if the Padres needed a start they traded for Garrett crochet game seven of the game seven of the NLCS we got no healthy starters well this Garrett crochet sitting yeah he won't pitch unless he gets a new contract lose your ever loving mind if it came down to that oh god holy cow all right good stuff from Jesse Rogers will keep an eye on any transactions that happen oh we got two hours to go more Ben and Woods including Jesse Agler coming up at our next hour here on 97 three the fans this season the W is going to owe woods any royalties I don't think he invented halfway home on a Tuesday hopefully he is on his way now to Hawaii after waking up early with the family a well deserved vacation for our colleague Stephen woods but we got myself Ben Higgins we got Paul Rinder we're here until ten o'clock today got tomorrow Thursday Friday next Monday next Tuesday and then I would you'll be back next Wednesday if all goes well for this vacation then we'll be all together on Wednesday next week and then I'm out Thursday Friday and then Paul he's gone so we've got one day with the full crew basically over the next two weeks that's not great but we'll do the best that we can we just had a great interview with Jesse Rogers woods he would have loved that he always loves talking to Jesse where we got the latest of what is and isn't going on here on trade deadline day he doesn't think Garrett crochet is going to be moved always so that's definitely not a definite if that is the case and the Padres needs starting pitching I mean who are they going to get Jack Flaherty is going to be the the premium guy out there can the Padres meet that price tag without dipping into Ethan Salas or Leo Dallas de Vries I don't think that they can given the competition for starting pitching which means you got to go down the list can you get Tyler Anderson from the Los Angeles Angels can you get Cal Quantrell I see people talking in the chat wouldn't be the biggest shocker for AJ Preller to bring back someone he once drafted in the first round could Cal Quantrell be returning to the Padres another pitcher that is available here at the deadline I keep it tuned to ninety seven three the fan all day long through the deadline at three o'clock Cal Glacier is going to be in with Annie and Elston and winning Chris as we get closer to the deadline later today but we've got constant coverage and we're keeping our eyes on all the wires and the tweets and everything to see if any insider is going to report any trades but nothing yet this morning last trade that went down was last night Jorge Solaire and Luke Jackson to the Atlanta Braves from the Giants which doesn't mean the Giants are waving the white flag they reportedly are still going for the playoffs and planning to keep Blake Snell so another name that potentially not on the market here there's just a lot of confusion right now in the hours what do we now seven hours away from the trade deadline yeah salary dump doesn't tell me as a fan that my team is still all in and pushing for the playoffs but I guess we'll see what happens there's still plenty of time left if maybe they've got another move up their sleeves up there in San Francisco I don't know if you are stressed by this whole process if saw that mentioned in the chat and you don't want to live on pins and needles the rest of the day and you're looking for something to distract you over the next few hours until someone texts you with the news of what the Padres did or didn't do I have a recommendation for you if you have a subscription to peacock check out their gold zone coverage of the Olympics yes game changer I certainly don't hate Olympic coverage you know interesting stories it's all packaged in prime time on tape delay especially on the west coast I mean everything obviously in Paris is long done before we sit down to our televisions at the end of the workday it's a what like eight nine hours ahead of us so nine hours ahead of us it's all completely done but I think we've gotten used to the point that most sports watching is best done live however it's hard to watch it at least in the past it's always been hard to watch the Olympics live it's on 17 different channels what am I supposed to be watching am I watching a basketball game am I watching judo am I watching tennis am I watching swimming you know and it's gotten a different channels and you got to pop around and figure out what you're going to watch well NBC and peacock have kind of solved that issue by going with the red zone model from the NFL and not only is it like the red zone Scott Hanson hosted just like the red zone it's called the gold zone and I was watching the last couple of days and I must say they jump around and anytime like a medal is about to be awarded they have like their quad boxes and they can go to different events and if they it's a metal like competition like if two fencers are going for the gold medal that box will be surrounded in gold and you'll see it and then they'll drop in live and then they'll switch to another event and you don't have the long lulls if you get tired of the features and the behind-the-scenes stories and sometimes I do I just want to actually see the sports this is really just the action constantly going from venue to venue whatever is happening the swimming race is about to start you get five seconds of buildup and then they go you don't get the 20 minutes all right coming up in 20 minutes we got the 200 meter breaststroke final and it here is all about the eight swimmers who are going to be in all the lanes uh-huh just five seconds and all right here we go Americans in lane four the the Canadians the favorite in lane three let's go and watch the race and then when it's done you are off to something else it's pretty fascinating I I don't have an NFL team so I but I like football being on on a Sunday red zone is the only way to go like once you have it once you see how great it is like I can't go back to just oh what's the one o'clock game today you know I I can't just watch one game anymore maybe the Sunday night or Monday night game when that's all the options you have but the red zones elite and so I was very excited to see that they were bringing in gold zone and Scott Hansen of all people to host it is great but we had we had it on yesterday and he's like coming up we've got seven straight metal gold medal matches coming up like they were just going to be going bam bam bam right to the action rights all the gold medals um it's fantastic and you're not going to love every single sport um I'm not a huge I'm not a huge Olympic sky so like I have trouble with the fencing I can't I can't see what's happening who's touching who it I just can't see it but you know when they drop in for you know 90 seconds I can handle that I can handle that but then you all of a sudden you're starting to watch something that you didn't you would have never turned on and I was watching I think it was uh like if you're going through the guide and it tells you what's on you're like eh skip I was watching the women's team archery final between China and South Korea I mean there's zero chance I would have ever watched this but pop it on and they go to it's basically like a best of five um and they're tied to two so they go like a shootout for their last one and everyone gets like one arrow and they are shooting these arrows from 75 meters away think about that they they described it it's three quarters of a football field wow to a target that's a bullseye like a dart board that is all the way across and they're all hitting like the tens and nines like right in the center from 75 meters away and it comes down to the last round and it comes down to the last shot and the shot is so close to the line if anything touches the bullseye line it's a 10 if it doesn't it's a 9 so the South Korean team who is dominant that the last shot is so close that they actually have to put an asterisk up and then the official walks down the 75 meters with a magnifying glass to determine whether or not that line is being touched and it's a 10 or a 9 to determine who wins the gold medal and they look at it in the magnifying glass and they go 10 points I mean come on that looks like the unexpected drama that you get from the Olympics that you would have never watched and you think about yeah this is this is me for me it's like five minutes of my life this has been the last decade or more of these women like have been preparing for this one moment because no one's ever going to care about our tree ever except for this one moment where all of a sudden everybody's watching it because it's on the gold zone and like they're going for the gold medal it's a fascinating way to watch the Olympics fascinating yeah I watched my wife was going crazy about gymnastics yesterday the US medal I think they got the bronze the men's team gymnastics yeah they meddled for the first time in like 16 years yep so that was cool and they were left they were led by the I don't know his name but the guy on the pommel horse he had the glasses on or something like that everyone was saying he looks like Clark Kent like before he becomes he would it was his his only event like the other guys did multiple things but he was just the pommel horse and it was the last thing so all he's doing is sitting there the whole time is waiting in his glasses waiting waiting and then they need him to come through at the very end to clinch the medal and he does it I mean that's pretty cool you know it's it was a that was a pretty good story as well one of the better stories from a Monday at the Olympics yesterday I said I don't get into a ton of the I don't want to say random events because they're just random to me but if you're if you're an Olympics fan then you enjoy all of them I tend to keep it more to like the track and I like the swimming and I'll watch basketball swimming by the way while it's it's repetitive sometimes they get tired of the all right same back and forth just like with the running on the track give Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines some credit they are so underrated phenomenal broadcasters on the swimming that makes every race seem like the biggest thing that has ever happened I mean when they're coming down and making that final turn and Rowdy Gaines is going all right they're great underwater watch for them in lane three they're going to make a run right now and they're coming down the stretch and Dan Hicks is going in lane five and it's he's trying to hold out for the gold medal and the cadence rises as they get closer to touching the line it's fantastic broadcasting they're just swimming back and forth I mean ultimately it's not that compelling but they do such a great job of how they broadcast it and how they package it up that swimming invariably is one of the most entertaining events to watch at the Olympics every single time it really is oh yeah and the Americans of course always do really well so it's always satisfying to see you know another American gold medal on the pool I don't know maybe we just have more pools or do more swimming but we do seem to do quite well in those events you know watch the team USA basketball on Sunday morning now you were telling me what was the spread they're playing again tomorrow the plan south Sudan tomorrow it's the south Sudanese team that nearly upset them in an exhibition game last week no NBA players on their team yeah I think that US trail by double digits in the second half they rallied and then they lost the lead LeBron made a basket with six seconds left and then Sudan had like two shots and a put back to win it US is favored by 30 against South Sudan against the same team that they just had trouble with I mean you can see it going both ways you can see him once again well yeah I mean they had trouble with last time as they did play really well in their first game against the MVP on their team but you could I mean you'd be crazy if you bet on the US and gave 30 and all of a sudden it's a two point game and half time you're going well I should have seen that coming they struggle with them last time but then when we need woods here if they blow them out of the water and you go well of course that's what they're supposed to do it's the United States of America in basketball against South Sudan a country that's only existed for like 13 years yes they should be winning by 60 so then if they win by 45 ago well that was dumb that I bet against the United States in basketball there's no winning on that one only a degenerate would bet on I'm texting USA South Sudan basketball I'm texting what you're like hey here's the line who you taking get him to bet on South Sudan that's he's going to want to bet on Sudan right I would think after what happened he's not going to give 30 in that I said team USA basketball is playing South Sudan tomorrow they only beat by one point in an exhibition last week will you bet on South Sudan to cover 30 points the other the other interesting feature and I don't know if I like this one or not from the Olympic broadcast did you see what they're doing on NBC that they are monitoring the heart rate not not necessarily the athletes although they did that in archery it was very fascinating you have to you have to actually let your arrow loose in between beats if you actually do it like during a heartbeat you're going to miss so you have to like wait and time it in between your own heart beats to shoot the arrow that was fascinating but what they're doing is they're actually monitoring the heart beats of the parents who are in the stands watching their kids like in the swim meet they have like the parents hooked up to a heart monitor and they're going oh look at mom's up to 145 beats per minute as as her son makes the final turn like I you must have so much money to cover this thing that that's that's what you're spending it on heart rate monitors for the parents in stands that are watching their kids compete in the Olympics that is absolutely crazy see what's he says here when he responds try to get him to bet on South Sudan get you some contest he might be in like the you know turn your phones into airplane mode at this point what time were they taking off I think I mean I think they're still at home when the show started there yeah they were waiting for their car though so it could be they could be in line to get on this plane we may have to wait on it well we'll give you an update on what's these wager on South Sudan at some point either today or on the show tomorrow let's take a time out we got Jesse Agler joining us Incorporated Tuesday Dodger series always a big one Jesse's thoughts on the road trip that was and the song lyric Incorporated that we're planning today coming up for the first time all ahead with Ben Woods after a check at traffic here on 97 3 the fan we were able to contact woods and he is in fact made a wager on the U.S. Olympic basketball South Sudan game not who would he take who did he take he took and he got the hook so the extra half point minus 29 and a half he's going with team USA red white and blue baby for woods basketball woods a sea note on it he can celebrate or commiserate with a Mai Tai in Hawaii when he gets there because that game is not until tomorrow but putting his money where his mouth sure he'll be watching none about that actually time difference is going to be or even earlier in the day yeah there's going to be a lot of early olympic action there was a couple of locals because I'm bad I have to mention it the skateboard street Jagger Eaton from engineers won a silver yesterday and Chase Bodinger former NBA player from La Costa Canyon won his very first match in beach volleyball with his partner Miles Evans that's a great story that is a really cool story great volleyball player in high school but you know basketball is the way you can get to college and there's two very complimentary sports though you would assume a guy that can jump I mean he's in a dunk contest yeah he can jump out of the building he's unbelievably athletic and it played great volleyball in high school but then focused on his basketball at Arizona and then drafted in the NBA had a solid career but once he was done he felt like yeah I still love volleyball let's try our hand at the beach game and has made it all the way to being I think one of the top two American teams qualifying for the Olympics and now competing in Paris for team USA at what is I think undoubtedly the most spectacular Olympic venue that probably has ever been created I mean there's the historic like the LA Coliseum and but the beach volleyball venue which is right there within a bump set and spike of the Eiffel Tower and they haven't lined up so that when you know they're playing beach volleyball and they just pan up the Eiffel Tower is just looming right above the beach volleyball stadium in a picture here in the chat it's so unbelievably cool I saw a time lapse of it being built and and the pool being built and they said oh yeah it took like about a month or month and a half and it looked incredible and yeah the the landscape with the with the Eiffel Tower behind it it looks so cool it's it's ridiculous although the the equestrian at like the the gardens at Versailles looks pretty awesome as well they they put so much into the Olympics I know yeah that is an amazing picture in our chat of the Eiffel Tower they're right behind the venue I mean it's absolutely incredible and and obviously they spend billions on the Olympics Los Angeles they're they're argument in four years is we have so many arenas and venues that we don't have to spend as much as other places do to put it all together but I mean they still you know there's that like whitewater rafting and canoeing that the stuff that you need those courses and and things like that which is it's a pretty penny to build those like 200 meter long whitewater canoe courses for the Olympics so it is it is this spectacular undertaking to try to put on the 17 day Olympic games and you know there's obviously some difficulties and some problems and they've got the whole polluted river that they wanted to compete the traveling they've delayed it like they've delayed it like three times because it's still not safe enough for people to go in the water I don't know what they're going to end up doing with the triathlon they're hoping to hopefully they have a good day where the you know the rains wash out whatever's pollutions in there and they can let people swim in it so it hasn't been perfect but it's been pretty good Olympics so far yeah no it's been fun it's it has been a great and kind of getting me excited for 2028 here in Los Angeles or in Southern California sure yeah I mean you kind of see how it's being done I mean we talked a little bit yesterday about the the opening ceremonies the controversy I guess with the opening ceremonies but the opening ceremonies were fantastic yeah a little long it was like what it almost feels like just going back to like so if I stadium and doing an opening ceremony in a stadium is not going to cut it anymore yeah like yeah la you gotta you gotta have up your game after that what are they going to do he's the la river I'm like no I don't think so the one you see when you take the Amtrak train up to Los Angeles is that the Los Angeles River and a big concrete base in there yeah oh it's gross I don't know what they're gonna do but I mean the production that went into this year's opening ceremonies was really well done and I liked the fact that they didn't have just the standard each country just walks in a group through a tunnel into the arena you've seen it done a million times Paris they took it up a notch and they had the boats floating down the river I thought it was great curious to see how it'll look in four years yeah so interest would you like need planned on trying to go to any Olympic events I think I would I don't know how yeah I don't know how hard I would try and how much money I would exactly yeah I mean like if the opportunity presents itself then yes I'd absolutely take that chance am I going to like plan for months but I definitely have to be at you know Olympic judo in Los Angeles just so I could say I went to an Olympic event a random event would you would you go yeah I think so I think it's a once probably yeah it's not like the Olympics comes around your neighborhood that often I had a buddy probably 12 14 years ago the Winter Olympics were in Vancouver and I had a buddy living in Seattle you know two two and a half three hour drive and he goes I got tickets from a friend if I want to drive up to Vancouver to go see curling in the Winter Olympics and it was like two random countries I go to curling and he's like I'm not sure and I go bro you have to go like you have to go it's the Olympic like that's a once in a lifetime opportunity most likely game world says I hear the closest event to San Diego will be in Temecula equestrian I believe I don't I don't know if that's true I know that when they had the 1984 Olympics equestrian was actually held here in San Diego at where the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club golf course is now before it was a golf course it was the equestrian event and if you actually go and hit balls on their range you see we have one of the jumps is still on the range from the equestrian event at the 1984 Olympics so yeah I'd go if I had taken this even equestrian I'd probably go up to Temecula I mean the Olympics in Temecula never thought I'd see that that's all right why are we talking about the Olympics and not the trade deadline because we're waiting has happened yet this morning literally nothing has happened teams are still calling and talking John Marosi just tweeted the Mariners aren't done dealing yet they'd like to add one more leverage reliever before 6 p.m. Eastern the pod raiser said to also still be talking about relief pitchers even though they got Jason Adam and another reliever but starting pitching has to be the priority you got to go starter next yeah you can't you can't give up anything for a reliever that might cost you the ability to acquire a starter so you get a starter and there's someone else who has a reliever that you can add fine but starter has to be first we will be joined by Jesse Agler the voice of the pond raise will join us talk about the a seven and two road trip and getting ready for the homestand opener tonight against the LA Dodgers that is coming up next year on 97 3 the you don't just live in your home you live in your neighborhood as well so when you're shopping for a home you want to know as much about the area baseball Jesse Aguilar is standing by the voice of the Padres will join us right after this check of traffic on 97 through the fan right Jesse before we do anything else what is your favorite olympic sport and baseball is not not in there right now was going to be back in 2028 but what what's your favorite olympic sport you know I've never been like a huge olympics guy I've gotten sucked in you know here or there to like a good track and field story line but I don't know like I was such growing up like a hardcore baseball football basketball guy and I know basketballs in the Olympics and the dream team was very cool in 92 although for you young folks out there those games are all on paper views so we didn't really get to watch a lot of it but you know it was it's just not like ever caught my attention and imagination the way like the quote unquote traditional North American sports did so I've never been like a huge olympic guy but like yeah if there's a great track and field story line you saying bold or Michael Johnson whoever you know like that was stuff that I could get pulled into but for the most part it was to me the summer Olympics were always like baseball season I'm going to watch baseball and obviously that's still very true these days I'm probably guilty and this is probably kind of an ugly American thing but of wondering like what Usain Bolt would be like if he was playing another sport like if he was an NFL wide receiver or you know if Michael Phelps was like a catcher in baseball with those giant hands and everything like what other sports could they have done and made a ton of money at you know somewhere else so probably they chose what they chose for a reason and it was the right reason for them but I kind of wonder how they do in a team sport you know that we we watch more often in this country we're ugly Americans they're no quite a little bit all right well let's talk about that road trip Jesse obviously a long one longest one of the season but it does does it go a little faster when the team goes seven and two and pulls off a sweep and two big series wins against two of the top teams in the American League no doubt about it you know I mean I've done more than my fair share of three city trips over the years and you know generally it's funny because that ten days or the nine days or the eleven days whatever it might be often feels like a month you know and I'll tell you what there are sometimes when six game road trips feel like a month if things are going very badly on the field so for them to go out there and not only have the success that they have but sort of the way they did it you know where the two losses were the book ends so you had that great run in between obviously the no hitters and no I mean it's funny it was definitely the fastest nine game road trip that I've ever experienced and it was it was just awesome I mean just it absolutely you know from a big picture standpoint exactly what the Padres needed probably they needed that seven game when it go out there and kind of do that to sort of take themselves up a level and they did all right take us through your process of calling the no hitter in person obviously not remotely like Joe Musgroves what it was just kind of like for you I love the video first one in person for you no but as as primary play by play yet okay but I've been to seen others I had one as a pre and post game host a long time ago not that counts for anything but I've seen a couple in person but that's the first one calling it for the team I was broadcasting in person yes and how was like the process for you did you feel the weight of the moment as it built I thought your final call was fantastic but obviously there's a lot of moments that go through a game like that yeah I think you know it's funny it felt very very very different to me from a broadcaster standpoint than the Musgrove one for a lot of reasons you know the the Musgrove one was so weighty because there hadn't been one and he was this local kid and it was like oh my gosh like it just felt like not the deceased one isn't a big piece of history don't get me wrong but like the Joe one had like layers upon layers upon layers of drama to it and then the complications of not being there and you know you're sort of worried the entire time about all right you know am I gonna actually be able to see the thing that happens that ends this game or ends this no hitter you know and thankfully you know the TV crew that night did a great job in Texas and you know we didn't have any scares but I mean that was a thing that happened regularly during those remote games where you know if there's a bad cut on TV or a bad piece of camera work and that does happen every once in a while you were left in the dark and you were just totally you know hung out to dry you didn't know what was happening and so for that to have happened in a big moment in that game would have been really scary as I recall it was in the ninth inning maybe like the first or second out there's a line drive to second base and it was like really close to not seeing it on TV you know it was like you know one or two outs in a no hitter so that was pretty crazy but so so the must go one had all of that going on this one a I had one under my belt be the Padres had one under their belt and so I and see we were there in person so it felt a lot more comfortable a lot more relaxed you know I kind of been there and done that at this point also at least once so it felt just a little bit more I don't know under control like I felt less nervous I felt less whatever but it was you know still a thing that you don't want to get wrong you know it's a thing you really want to be there for the moment and it was just really really cool and to see the team celebrate like that and you know I'll tell you what when I saw everybody jump it around behind the mound you know after the final out my first thought was man this is this is what it's going to be like hopefully in October for this team a bunch of times you know just having that kind of celebration and seeing them be able to do that so it's a just tremendous moment in pottery history don't see says been just incredible as of late so to see him you know finally kind of break through that barriers come close so many times that was really special it's just those are the kinds of things you know we'll remember for the rest of our lives and and to be able to be a witness to it is is something that I always really very much appreciate you know I kind of thought the same thing is they were celebrating and and actually believe you know it's good to have some celebration some good memories like that to kind of you know will it into the universe in the future as well I got Jesse Aker the voice of the pot of threes is with us it is trade deadline day I I don't know how much you hear obviously on the on the boss of the plane plane flights but what what's just kind of the mood around the team as they approach obviously three o'clock this afternoon from what you saw maybe on the way back on Sunday yeah I think the mood was hey we just had a bit into road trip you know I mean people are feeling good about that I don't I don't think there was a ton of you know conversation about that on the plane necessarily you know it's one of these things that it happens every year everybody understands the situation you know I think when you're in a position where your team is expected to be a buyer it's probably a little bit easier than it is you know the other way around when you're kind of looking around and being like man I wonder if that guy's gonna be gone and that guy's gonna be gone and that guy's gonna be gone you know that's not gonna be the case for the Padres obviously moves can be made and so people will be coming and going but it's not that it feels like it's all gonna be taken apart you know as we've seen obviously at times in the past so you know I think these guys are pros you know I think as I have kind of had more and more time around you know major league teams I think players have gotten better and better at being able to compartmentalize stuff like the trade deadline you know I think every generation like handles it a little bit better you know there was a time call it a decade ago when I think social media might have had like an outsized impact on how guys felt and you know sort of their state of mind I think that's no longer the case you know in part because many of the players now grew up with it in part because I don't think social media is necessarily having like the same broad impact that it was you know however many years ago you want to say and the trade deadline is part of that you know I mean guys used to like get wound up in that kind of stuff I think more than they do now and that's that's just sort of I guess one of those like natural evolutions in progressions that you see in sports you know is that you know guys every generation every whatever number of years I think really are more well equipped to handle stuff like this not to say it's easier automatic obviously there's you know plenty of nervous guys around baseball today but I'm telling you it's weird like there's nobody like a major league baseball player at being able to just sort of put on the blinders have the tunnel vision and worry only about the immediate task in front of them that they do an incredible job of it and I really think you know in today's day and age better than ever before compartmentalize yeah that's uh it's very solid and probably appreciated skill for a baseball player Jesse when do you allow yourself to kind of get into scoreboard watching I feel like I'm doing it a little bit earlier this year and maybe it's just because there's so many teams that are so close in the wild card race and and you start seeing games where it's like clear when you know you got the the Braves are taking on an American League team well I'm cheering for that American League team now and I've been doing a little bit earlier I think than usual I think for me I've been doing it a little bit as of late but only as it relates to the trade deadline right because you have that sort of like mish mash of teams you know call it between you know a couple under and a couple over in the National League so I've sort of like been peaking at them you know like the giants of the world and that kind of you know grouping of teams and it's like all right I've been watching what they've been doing relative to how are they going to behave at the trade deadline and so I think I'll probably pull back on the scoreboard watching after today a little bit and and you know when it comes to playoff positioning I'll start you know depending on where the Padres are obviously like you know it's September for me you know the start of September when I really get into it you know August can be a slog August can you know obviously decide some things but like a lot can change in that final month of the season so I mean unless the Padres get way out in front or way behind you know I don't imagine myself doing like that every night in 10 scoreboard watching probably before September 1st but you know it's easy to say now and I'll probably get sucked into like having three games on my iPad at some point during August because you know that's the way I am but you know I really I think it's not necessarily worth like getting all the way into until September because you had to focus on you know the team in front of you and and if the Padres are doing their thing that stuff shouldn't matter you know as much until you get later on into the season talking to the Incorporated Jesse Aguiler the voice of the San Diego Padres Jesse I know hi Paulie hey how you doing man good how are you he's wearing many hats now I'm actually not wearing what's gone well no hats but figurative hats right now Jesse I know you do a ton of research for every game for every series and we have not seen the Padres newest edition yet Jason Adams what do you what have you noticed what stood out to you from him that he could provide to the Padres bullpen I think I mean if you look at the ways for form the last couple of years in Tampa Bay he's a guy that slots into that late and in conversation immediately you know I mean this sort of three headed beast as of late you know with more in home in Strata and Suarez and sort of the flexibility that Mike Schilt has been allowed by those guys to kind of you know mix and match and it's not necessarily a strict seventh inning guy or a strict eighth inning guy Suarez is clearly the closer but you know he's obviously been incredible about you know handling different roles or more than three outs whatever it might be on a given day so you know you you're now adding a fourth guy to that mix and as you know right with bullpen every time you add a guy you you're essentially subtracting you guys so like everybody gets pushed down a notch you know underneath of that when you add a high leverage guys so I think it's a huge pickup you know and any time you're able to you know go to a higher leverage arm maybe in the sixth inning which wasn't necessarily the case for this team the last couple of months that gives you that much better of an opportunity to win you know how many times this year we've seen you know Mike Schilt really not feel comfortable down a run or maybe even in a tie game sometimes go to one of his higher leverage arms you know in the sixth or seventh inning because he didn't have enough of those guys to be able to get through it now maybe you're going to be able to do that sometimes and so now you try and steal a couple of more victories here and there you know those are the things on the margins that matter an awful lot so getting a guy who's been a very reliable eight nine inning type of person for Tampa Bay and putting him into this bullpen I think it's huge great pickup love it and excited to see him work. Alright last thing before the Incorporator and there's going to be a little twist today on the Incorporator but I maybe I'm Charlie Brown trying to kick the football but I really believe that this time it's different see they're playing so well feel like they have turned a corner and they're not going to follow this run with a five game losing streak this time tell me that that I'm not crazy that you're seeing maybe a better brand of baseball not that they're going to win every game the rest of the way I get it it's baseball there's going to be a little some downs here in the last couple of months but not quite the lulls maybe we saw before am I am I deluding myself I mean I feel the same way you do and time will tell but you know what what I saw if I'm going to point out one non super obvious thing about you know the road trip because obviously they started pitching was unbelievable for the most part you know that's that's something that should stand out to anybody who watch those games or listen to those games for me it was the consistently tough at bats that they turned in over the course the entire trip even in the in the losses you know they got shut out in the first game but they grinded and and what was that seven nothing you know in Cleveland that first game but it was one nothing until things got away in the bottom of the eighth inning they they have not I don't think prior to this trip had a stretch that long you know nine games in which it seemed like they were turning in those at bats every single inning of every single game like we haven't seen that this year it's a now don't get me wrong it's a really hard thing to do particularly in certain starting pitchers you know certain started pitchers you just can't do that against I think but they never relented at any point in that nine game trip and they were rewarded for it you know by the results and I think you know that to me was the thing that looked different there that's that's not something we've seen over that number of games consistently this year which is I think why is the first time all year we've seen them you know tear off a winning streak like that so if they're able to continue to do that and again as we said it's baseball like you can't literally do everything every day but you know the more we see that I think you know the more set up they are to have runs like the one they just had and and I'm with you I believe there is more coming you know like I said I'm not going to get too far into scoreboard and standings just yet but I think if they continue to have that kind of approach if they continue to get the kind of starting pushing that they've gotten really all year long I think they're going to be in a very very good position going into that final month. All right Jesse Paulie found an odd play by play tall for the minor leagues that got us thinking about the Incorporator this is this is what he found a like a long way ball or something on the weekend hard toward right field this is getting toward the fence this is going to be carrying on my wayward son they'll be tripping you are gone like I would just say kiss that baby goodbye kiss that baby goodbye there for the tourists carry on my wayward son they'll be tripping you are gone that one's gone oh yeah I've got no idea what was going on there Jesse other than it sounded like he was being put up to do something by someone else which is what we do with you every week with the Incorporator good morning show out yeah something and we got a good idea if you want to incorporate a word song lyrics into it into a call somewhere so I thought okay let's let's freshen up the Incorporator let's have Jesse incorporate a song lyric a line into the game somewhere tonight doesn't have to be on a home run call like that guy you can do better than that I know you can and we took a lot of suggestions but I saw one I thought well makes perfect sense that was carry on my wayward son by Kansas so you're going to incorporate a Kansas lyric into tonight's game and your lyric is all we are is dust in the wind all we are is dust in the wind that instead of vocabulary word is your Incorporator lyric for tonight you love it this is cool love it love it you know what and and and anybody who it listens to us with any kind of regularity knows we probably have the most philosophical majorly yeah I would think so of the 30 teams so so this this fits in very nicely we definitely we definitely step back and dig deep into the human I know you're going to I know you're going to kill it and that's what I'm looking forward to hearing how you do it and then if that works the level of difficulty may start increasing on some song lyrics in the future we'll just see how it goes Jesse thank you so much have a good home stand it's a quick one and then back out on the road again to the east coast coming up next week and all those miles in before the hopefully the playoffs that sounds good to me thanks Jesse alright Jesse Agler with us the Incorporator now on to song lyrics all we are is dust in the wind how to take us like five years to finally get to this I love it it's a great idea but good isn't it that ball was crushed just dust in the window it's got to be all we are is dust in the wind now we'll Tony pick up on I don't know we'll find out we'll find out tomorrow morning stay tuned we got one hour to go Paul he's got some headlines something's got to happen here right I mean we're come on we are six hours away from the trade deadline and there's many moves left to be made will they happen in the next hour here on 97.3 the fan I think to get into Jesse Agler that was fantastic he sounds excited about our new song lyrics Incorporator dust in the wind are are we all we are is dust in the wind is his Incorporator for tonight you can listen in starting at 640 Sam 11 with the Eco Water SoCal pregame show at 540 tonight and before I forget since they are going to play again today I promised woods I got the rally roach here kiss the roach give it a little kiss for luck hopefully the Padres can start another winning streak tonight and not Jesse believes he was he was he was like me he was like you know what I'm believing this time not that they're going to necessarily you know win 80% of the remaining games but maybe they've put some of the inconsistencies and struggles in the past they will still if they don't add pitching they're still going to have some days a Randy Vasquez may struggle if you're throwing at a major again you're not going to win all those bullpen days without a major and Dylan Cease and Michael King they'll have it off start at some point but I think for the most part going forward hopefully getting healthier with Joe Musgrove and Fernando Tetis Jr. whatever they do today got a solid back into the bullpen now with Jason Adam there's no reason the Padres should lose 5 in a row or you know 8 of 10 at any point the rest of the season you know if they struggle it's because you go 4 and 4 over 8 games and then you get back and and win you know 4 out of 5 or 5 out of 6 this is a team that should be playing above 500 baseball and if they do so it's a team that should be in the playoffs in October I do believe that don't knock on wood as the road I believe that yeah we kiss the roach hopefully that that's the karma that we need going forward so hopefully they can carry that on and and things go well I mean speculate all we get in the speculation right now there's no no trades have gone down since last night a sajol Sherman saying I think the Trank Grisham could be a fit for the Giants after they traded Jorge Solaire and the Yankees picked up Jazz Chisholm he's kind of a superfluous piece now that I skate for him by the way yesterday yeah two home runs with Aaron Judge is bat at least on the second home run now he was facing like a position player on the second home run so don't count entire judge also hit to 38 and 39 the Yankees are hoping that this is a sign that their struggles of the last what month and a half or so are coming to an end and they're they're breaking out of it so we can talk more about what's going on in baseball as we continue to monitor the trade talks if anything happens we'll of course bring it to you but until then might as well continue on with the other stuff like our rindle report falling and get things started here with our addition today's addition of the rindle report now to the to the mother greatest welcome to the rindle report with Paul Rindle hi Paul right two stories from the world of sports that we haven't gotten to yet we'll start off in major league baseball and one story that you didn't know you needed are you laughing beyond it's the rindle report hey Paul how are you doing okay how are you on 97 3 the fan are you ready to blast the mood I need some help please that was good can I get a hoe yeah alright alright alrighty poly good morning Benjamin just another hat you are wearing even though you're not wearing a hat this is like your fifth hat of the morning lots of hats have many many hats we will start off in the NFL saw a headline this morning that anybody in San Diego might remember the name Rashad penny standing state stand out uh like historic running back for the Aztecs let broke the record for all time rushing yards yeah it's almost um crazy to think that like yeah I was kind of excited to watch sandy or say football games when Rashad penny was carrying the ball for a while yeah rocky long gave you something to watch for me yeah when was the last time the Aztecs had a Heisman candidate I and you know I don't I know Sean Lewis came on I believe with that Gwen and Chris last week I don't want to insult anyone maybe he'll bring the excitement back but it's been a while since we've had an exciting player like Rashad penny playing college football here in San Diego how long ago was that uh he's retiring actually after six years no six years so that's not that long was that 2017 I guess it was running running backs the expiration date on running backs it's like a milk that you buy at Trader Joe's it's really not gonna last that long yeah it was uh it's a bummer man I mean I guess you know if he's at peace with it then good for him but uh a very surprising first round pick out of San Diego state by the Seahawks and then he signed with the jaguars was it the jaguars you said panthers panthers just this offseason he signed with him this offseason and like as early as recently as last week was saying he was feeling good and ready to go like when healthy I'm a top running back in the league so like okay Rashad penny's ready for a breakout season pick him up on your fantasy team right now yeah he's feeling good no he's uh he has retired uh yeah six seasons they placed him on the reserve retired list and then the panthers made another move for the roster but no one else I mean obviously I'm sure health is a big factor here but no reason specifically given nothing given yet for the retirement of Rashad penny yeah that's too bad I was always pull for him when I see him whatever team he's been on and he bounced around them quite a bit but um yeah good luck to Rashad penny and whatever post football endeavors that uh that he chooses to pursue let's see here next up I was trying to find there it is so uh if you listen to this show regularly you will hear in our Padres wrap up at 635 each morning after a Padres game we have the winning edition and we have the losing edition losing edition it's a shame if they lose not playing it today they didn't lose last night and they're gonna win tonight but uh part of the part of that montage in the losing Padres wrap up is from Pete Fairbanks relief pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays we'll give it 16 minutes of salt and then we'll you know get back on the bump and figure it out 16 minutes of sulk get back on the ball get back on the ball figure it out it's just you know yeah you you're bummed for a little bit you get a little self pity and then you gotta got to move on so it's like Jesse was telling us compartmentalize and move on exactly we've played multiple Pete Fairbanks interviews this year in particular he's he's he gives a very interesting post game interviews standing in front of his locker and uh he gave another one yesterday and this was not the post game in the clubhouse in front of his locker this was on the field uh for the Rays with oh what is that a Tricia Whitaker is the sideline reporter for Bally Sports I think it is out there in Tampa Bay and I just wanted to play this video he has a very um he has a very special cause near and dear to his heart he explains why in this clip and why he donates a hundred dollars after every strike out this was pretty cool it is a special day you hosted the Turner syndrome foundation today for your baby girl Ellis who you all lost to Turner syndrome in the off season how much did it mean to you you not only closed out the game but you ended it with a strikeout and we know you're doing strikeouts for Ellis well my pockets are a hundred lighter um but you know I think it was a great summation of what we've been trying to do um if I could encourage everybody to go to Rays baseball dot auctions at MLB been on some stuff if you're low go come build some Legos with me um yeah it was a perfect ending to you know everything that we've built towards over the past couple months you told me a couple weeks ago that you guys have seen a lot of butterflies around and butterflies is the symbol for Turner syndrome I know today's a special day for you in this foundation and auction means a lot do you feel like she was with you today uh yeah definitely felt a piece out there so you know I'll take that Pete Fairbanks thank you so much we appreciate it as a reminder go to Rays baseball dot auctions dot MLB dot com Pete you want to hold up the shirt for us for strikeouts a shameless plug there you go yeah so a tragic story obviously he and his wife lost their little girl to Turner syndrome in the off season and so he has adopted that as his cause a hundred dollars for every strikeout that he gets out a pretty good season now he's yeah one of those guys that is rumored to be on the move very very well could be traded by three o'clock today maybe just in Diego I mean I mean price tag would be high and they've already spent a lot on a reliever from from that same team but I mean I wouldn't hate it woods would love it he's a huge fan of Pete Fairbanks yes and you'd really have a lockdown back in the bullpen if you did that I mean if you if you don't you strike out going for a starter would you can't you can't strike out going for a starter but if you did certainly wouldn't say no to a Fairbanks deal if you could make it happen not not trading salads for debris another reliever but anyways just wanted to get that in there that's that's a story that yeah I heard of Turner syndrome a chromosomal disorder female born with only one ex chromosome symptoms include short stature delayed puberty infertility heart defects learning disabilities and obviously I'm bad cases like it was with Pete Fairbanks his daughter can be fatal as well so doing something good did a hundred dollars per strikeout and obviously when he gets in there he's got got a quite a few strikeouts this season I can see he's got a lot of woods connection woods gives a hundred dollars per win yeah to the to the Peter Seidler Foundation for for each tier one team win that he's got so they seem very on the same page love it all right and then I will change the vibes here a little bit put a smile on everyone's face so a couple years ago I think it was the might have been the summer games in Tokyo was that twenty twenty one yeah it was a year delayed because of cold right you know twenty twenty one back then we played clips on our show as we did some Olympics coverage from NBC and I think they had peacock going at that time and it was Kevin Hart and Snoop Dogg like I think it was weekly not nightly but they were covering some of the more obscure Olympic sports and letting I mean just basically giving Snoop Dogg a mic and letting him do his thing and so I was looking around for that and I go I can't find it they have replaced Snoop Dogg it's Kevin Hart and Keenan Thompson now on peacock and they're doing that same style of show and I go look I I like Keenan Thompson fine but he's not Snoop Dogg like but they have Snoop Dogg they're just like that's a major oversight and I was like looking around I was asking my wife like what's going on so Snoop Dogg is still very much a part of NBC and peacock's coverage of the Olympics they had him on like primetime Olympics or whatever the show was called it was a different setup and he was a guest with Mike Tareko I was upgraded essentially I think so the big show so I was able to find some Snoop Dogg footage we will start with Snoop Dogg calling badminton this was outstanding she ready to roll I'm ready to rock and roll and put my stuff grab let's go we got highlights the best of week one with Snoop you ready let's get correct we are starting with badminton first you know the shuttle cop goes fast it can reach over 250 miles throughout oh I love the badminton right this is a great rally right in between China and the US right here as you see it don't stop to the cast to drop they rocking and rolling back and forth give me that no I need that no over here no over there what about over there no what about there no give me that I need that back to no ten hours a week yeah wait a minute only way up in the sky now down back up over there now over here get out the way move I told you we need that what you think that was fantastic pretty good I mean it was a great rally too I've watched a lot of badminton but pretty entertaining if that's what watching badminton is like well we also have snoop calling rugby as well here's another clip this is tough in the rain how about the French rugby team hey we're getting close to football season I want this guy in my fantasy team I need him at running back on a quick toss 37 toss to the left he's got wheels he deals he falls he spills but he gave us to his home and he get five to stay alive that's five points and that ain't Ruben that's right this was Francis first of all metal the dancing they love rugby get your rule even knows the rules get five stay alive that's five points for a try in rugby as opposed to six for a touchdown in football take your word for it yeah snoop knows his stuff I'll be following that over the next couple of weeks with more snoop dog coverage because I put snoop dog on a mic and let him call sports I'm in the snoop there um Keenan Thompson's there Kevin Hart Colin Jost isn't Tahiti we talked about him earlier flavor Flav is there he's the sponsor of the flavor Flav is incredible the women's water polo team we had that story on channel 10 last night because they needed like a sponsor and he goes well sponsor you so he's like basically a lot of the women had like second and third jobs and he goes no no no I got you guys and he sponsored their like their trip out there everything it's so cool when he's not saving red lobster he's sponsoring the US women's water polo team making sure that they've got everything they need for hopefully a successful run at the Olympics let's see I saw this morning that US women's rugby team did lose in the semi-finals so they'll play in the bronze medal game they lost a New Zealand so I've never even gotten this far I'm going for their first medal and then I saw Katie Ledecky it was just the semi-finals of the 1600 meters she won by so much I think she was 18 seconds ahead of her next closest competitor remember this is swimming where sometimes it's more like two hundredths of a second is the difference she was 18 seconds think about how long you want to go for 18 seconds like okay here we go ready we're gonna I'm gonna stop talking for 18 seconds and this is Katie Ledecky she touches in three two one now I don't like this this is uncomfortable and second place just touched the line half that's incredible she is a superstar so she got out of the pool dried off place got to be a got to the end of the pool all right again just waiting for something to happen this morning everyone's saying we need to get off the air because then the moves will start I mean if Adam wants to just get to you know Annie and Elston earlier if you think that's gonna make something happen I'm willing experimental we're willing to discuss but let's take your time out we'll see if anything happens during the break I give you a rundown of what happened in baseball last night I got the standings I'm not I'm not ashamed to do a little scoreboard watching already with less than two months to go in the Major League Baseball season I'm watching what's happening in the NL wild card race we'll get to that coming up next we've been a once after traffic on San Diego's number one sports station ninety seven three the fan got the Padres Dodgers tickets for tomorrow's Dylan see start to give away here in a couple of minutes do not go anywhere Ben woods Ben and Paul what's he I think is still at the airport because he's still texting us I don't think they've left yet hmm feels like he could have done the first couple of hours in the show it feels like he could have been here at least like eight yeah yeah and then then headed to the airport they're so early for everything like you're supposed to get to your flight two hours early we get like four hours and he'd be like ah two o'clock yeah two p.m. wanting to get there early so I'm keeping my eyes just on the other teams in the NL wild card race so five other teams maybe six if you include the Giants since they've won four in a row there are only four games back and reportedly hanging on to Blake Snell and still thinking they've got a shot but you got the Atlanta Braves who are currently the wild card leaders but that lead is now down to just a half a game over the Mets and Padres after they lost to the Braves or to the Brewers eight to three last nine the Braves have lost seven of nine they had the two wins against the Mets over the weekend but those are their only two wins in a while so the Braves have been headed in the wrong direction we'll see if the the pickup of Jorge Solaire and Luke Jackson is going to help stop the bleeding but with all the injuries they've had I said it on the round table last week we did the predictions or last time we did the round table we said who do you think the three teams are going to be and everybody said Braves someone Padres whatever I said I don't I don't know that the Braves are going to be there they were like three and a half four up at the time when I said it but I go they at some point the injuries are going to come back to bite the Braves and now all of a sudden they're down to just half game they could be out of a playoff spot as early as tomorrow so there's no guarantee the Braves are going to be in the postseason at this point they're just a half game back the Mets they're back on track they beat the twins 15 to 2 so they moved back into a tie with the Padres for the second wild card spot on the idle day the one that hurt last night the most was the Diamondbacks Nationals game I looked at the score pretty early and the the Nationals scored five in the top of the first off of Jordan Montgomery who's you know didn't get his season started until a few weeks ago in his struggle he's got in the area over six right now one of the big pickups for the Dbacks and the Nationals scored again in the second six nothing and I kind of put it in the win column I didn't look at it for a while I looked at it late they were still up eight to four going into the bottom of the ninth no problem except Diamondbacks rallied with a five run bottom of the ninth capped by a Corbin Carroll pinch hit walk off to run home run and all of a sudden they're just a half game behind the Padres and the Mets so they're the first team just out in the wild card race but just a half a game out and then the Cardinals lost yesterday to the Rangers six to three they've lost four out of five which has dropped them two games behind the Padres and Mets out of the wild card standings and then there's the Pittsburgh Pirates who are still very much in the thick of things they rallied with a three run go ahead home run of the ninth inning in Houston to beat the Astros five to three and they're just two games back and tied with the Cardinals so you've got the Braves half a game up Mets and Padres then the Diamondbacks half a game bat and the Cardinals and Pirates two games back that's two and a half games separating six teams and at most only three of them will make the playoffs you throw blanket over all of them so let me pull it up here since you are scoreboard watching you self admittedly I'm I'm kind of in between like Jesse Eagler said he's more of like a September first guy I'm probably like mid to late August at least before I really start caring I'll admit I'm kind of early you're a little early but once you kind of know who you're cheering for and against there's no reason not to set when it's early in the season and like the Diamondbacks are playing the Giants you get no idea who it's good or bad to lose you know you don't know where they're going to be later in the season you just let it unfold at this point there are at least some games where you can fairly confidently know all right I know I'm cheering against this team tonight right are you okay so let's go through the teams I mean Braves have the half game lead yeah you're cheering against and Mets are tied you're cheering against the Braves you're cheering against the Mets you're cheering against the D backs the Cardinals and the Pirates and the Giants Cardinals Pirates and Giants do you how confident are you that they're going to be in the mix in a month not as confident for the I think the Diamondbacks will still be in the hunt for sure yeah I definitely the Diamondbacks are a team that's playing their best baseball right now and going in the right direction obviously went to the World Series last year the Cardinals have always kind of been defying expectations all year I mean last year we talked about the Padres run differential oh and again this year the Padres run differential is right where it should be there plus 34 which is about what they should be for a team that's six games over 500 run differential isn't that important I know everyone thinks that I'm mr. run differential it's only you are mr. run if but it's only important when it's weird like why is your run differential so good and your record so bad or conversely the Cardinals they have a minus 51 run differential their record should be about eight or nine games under 500 yet somehow they've managed to stay proof that run differential means nothing well no it it can be telling now it would tell you that the Cardinals are probably have some smoke and mirrors going on and they shouldn't be able to keep this up now they could always start playing better and and but they somehow they've managed I don't really think they're going to hang on the Pirates I would also imagine with being careful with Paul Skins and their young pitchers they it's going to be tough for them to stick around and you know they're probably not investing they made one trade for a pitcher yesterday but you don't think they're going to make a huge improvement so they're probably not going to stick around to me it's the Diamondbacks and maybe the Giants are the ones you worry about the most that are trying to chase you down at this point the division opponents right so I mean we always cheer against the division opponents but you can definitely I mean the Braves are in depth the Braves are the team that they could still fall flat on their face they they are not guaranteed a playoff spot as good as they've been in recent years there's no promise that that means they'll be there in the postseason this year and at some point the injuries are just too much that feels like a team that could give up a lot to go get a Garrett crochet yeah I mean you know they just pulled off the the trade trade last night for Solaire are they going to add pitching like they feel desperate yeah a little bit with all the injuries and the high expectations that they've had every year feels like that I could see them getting a little desperate sure all right let's let's take a timeout before we do that we got some Padres tickets to give away start dialing now 833288093 we'll take the sixth caller you can win tickets for tomorrow's game against the Dodgers Dylan cease on the mound it's a 541st pitch tomorrow our earlier on a quick two game series getaway day for the Dodgers call now to win a pair of tickets 833288093 Paulie Lancher calls during the break and then we'll come back final segment will anything happen during our show nothing in the first three hours and 30 minutes we got less than 30 minutes to go see if a trade comes down before we're off year and Andy and Elston take over next on San Diego's number one sports station 97 3 the fan congratulations to Alex won the Padres tickets everybody else I'm sorry you're gonna have to get in the old fashioned way sneaking now don't do that don't don't do that the security is very tight at Petco Park you'd never be able to get in pod race should be I would assume sellout crowds the next couple of days it's crazy that we're now assuming Tuesday and Wednesday night games are going to be sellouts at Petco Park well when the Dodgers come to town it was always a sellout it was just no no no no no it wasn't always a sellout even when the Dodgers came to town in the last 10 years it was always the conversation was is it gonna be 30% Padres fans 40% Padres fans can we can we split it down the middle I mean now it's it's gonna be a sellout and I expected to be 85 90% Padres fans yeah they'll be they'll be Dodgers fans no doubt about it but just the fact that you can get that many people on a weeknight two week nights in a row at Petco Park regardless of opponent is is pretty spectacular considering where this franchise was 10 years ago 20 years ago just it's different now and I love it and I appreciate it and it's always great no matter what they do or don't do at the trade deadline and nothing yet although I did see this tweet from John Morosi during our break he said of note Jack Flaherty and Mike Schilt had a good relationship when Flaherty was a cardinal Schilt's Padres are looking to add a starter Flaherty is available eyeball emojis thank you John slash Adam Klug morosi that update on not update on the trade deadline I mean it's good I guess if the Padres do get Jack Flaherty that he and he and Mike Schilt already get along and have a good right with relationship I don't get the sense that AJ Preller is making his choices based on who Mike Schilt got along with in the past or didn't get along with in the past I also knowing she'll see a little bit like we do and how much he will defend his players no matter what how many bad relationships do you think he has with players I think he's got a good relationship with every good point when someone will defend you to the nth degree how are you going to say just never really got along with my skipper yeah I know he was constantly defending me in the media and going to bat for me all the time and had my back in every situation just didn't like the guy though we just didn't get along so yeah I don't like these deadline shows no they're never they've never worked out well for us the one soda one but that was that deadline day or the day before deadline day it was deadline day deadline day and it was bad before the soda it was like an hour and a half of absolute anxiety and just waiting waiting waiting there's no one so to get moved this year and I'm still just like come on guys whenever you want yeah move so we'll see we've got about 20 minutes out of silence like would you one eight minutes left we'll see if they make any moves obviously Annie and Elston will still be here covering it all even if we're not Paulie and so nobody jealous if someone else gets to report a trade we've got jealous I just want something to happen like planning today's show yesterday evening sucked because I'm like we're just kind of sitting around in limbo waiting for the potteries to make a move I mean there's no reason to plan like a giant show when this is really what we're going to be doing no matter what whether they make a move or not we're just going to be watching to see if if something does happen so yeah we're down to our last 20 or so let's uh let's check traffic and then we'll count down the clock until you know nine fifty five and we turn things over to Annie and Elston but let's uh one more check of traffic here on ninety seven three the fam sour ninety seven three the fan is brought to you by the farmer's dog from a healthier way to more energy when you switch your dog's food to the farmer's dog the effects can feel magical what sorcery is this not at all it's just real food made for the health of dogs get fifty percent off your first box at the farmers dog dot com slash radio Elisa says about time to call Dave then no we're not having Dave in don't worry woods I know you're on the tarmac I think he's getting ready to take off we're not not having Dave you do a great job other than that one little clip he's not just joining the program to the woods not Dave woods just texted us can't believe he didn't give you guys a trade to talk about so I think he's listening right now we did um we did hear potentially and I won't I won't reveal any sources or people but Dave Roberts may have actually gotten wind of the did we talk about yesterday but we did yeah all right we already talked about it yesterday okay on the air all right so he's definitely aware he's aware of what what transpired on the show this week uh by the way speaking of prospects that make you nervous or upset not really okay not really good I did you I do have I am going to my trainer today she and Dave are real tight so if he had anything to report I might hear it from her as well later today uh speaking of prospect considering uh of all these deadline deals we didn't get to it yesterday did you see who hit for the cycle on Sunday for the Miami Marlins no Xavier Edwards does that ring a bell at all it was a former pod rate he was a Padres minor leaguer he was uh one of the guys for the Marlins Jake well no they traded him to the Rays though and then the Rays let him go and the Marlins picked him up but he was part of the Jake Croninworth Tommy fam deal when the Padres uh sent uh who who wasn't the one he wasn't the main piece but he was one of the other pieces in that trade didn't stick with the Rays ended up with the Marlins has only had a couple of stints in the major leagues but happened to hit for the cycle on Sunday for the Miami Marlins and skipped Schumacher's team and I came in a loss but he was the only guy who had pretty much any hits for the team but he had all four of them that was uh yeah 2019 off season the Padres sent infield prospects either Edwards outfield or Hunter Ren for a hunter and player to be named I don't remember who that player to be named was for Tommy fam and some two-way prospect named Jake Croninworth right Tommy fam obviously has uh has gone around the circuit since then and uh now is back with the St. Louis Cardinals uh where he was so long ago after yesterday's trade and Jake remains Jake our Jake here with the San Diego Padres but once upon a time he was traded for Xavier Edwards who hit for the cycle on Sunday for the Miami Marlins just one of those uh I don't think that means now the Padres lost the trade I still feel feel like they did pretty well. Yeah Hunter Renfro has gone on and continued to just kind of do Hunter Renfro things he's he's hit his home runs been you know better than an average player but not ever a superstar type level player he's been okay I think the Padres are very happy though with what they got in Jake Croninworth and even in the contributions from Tommy fam in that deal. Hunter Renfro is a loser I just didn't I didn't see him as a major huge part of the future of the San Diego Padres. You don't like a lot of Padres. I do like a lot of Padres I like Jake even though I tried to trade Jake a number of times tried to trade Joe you can't stand at a major hated Hunter Renfro who's next Ben where would the Padres be next if they had listened to me a couple of times really yeah it's not wouldn't have been the worst idea back in the day. All right Tyler Glass now tonight against Matt Waldron in the first game in the series Dodgers throwing a nasty picture at the Padres will test those Liam Jesse talked about how well the Padres have battled at the plate throughout the road trip which is it's been really impressive because they really do I noticed especially in the last couple of games in Baltimore even like when they didn't score in an inning like seeing 20 to 30 pitches against pitchers constantly. I mean the foul balls if I was watching like a fan of the other team in the Orioles I'd be like get this team out of town I am so tired of these long innings even when we don't give up runs and 27 pitches you know the first inning and they don't score they've been taking good at bats they've been working counts they've been exhausting opposing starting pitchers can they do that against one of the best arms in baseball though today in Tyler Glass now or do you go with a different strategy part of being a good lineup is sometimes you do have to mix it up because once they see all right they're taking a lot of pitches there you know they're trying to work those at bats I'll just lay in a couple of strikes early and get ahead and put myself in a great situation sometimes you do have to mix it up and then be aggressive early in account early in an at bat to take advantage of a guy who's just trying to get ahead so it's that chess game that you know batters and pitchers constantly play and it's one of the things I'm going to be looking for in tonight's series opener with Tyler Glass now in the mound for the Dodgers just looking how did he do against the Padres early in the year he pitched opening day right in Korea he did he pitch I think he did last now five innings two hits two and runs four walks three strikeouts okay obviously you're kind of not completely stretched out but I don't know that he is now because he's just off a stint on the injured list a couple of times ago so and then the Clayton Kershaw going tomorrow and not sure if he's stretched out maybe I think he went four in his last start so maybe they stretch him out to five but there'll obviously be some opportunities against the Dodgers bullpen in this series over the next couple of days as well I'm interested in seeing the debut of Jason Adam could come probably as soon as tonight I assume he will be part of the team potteries will have to make a corresponding one if he last but he's got to be well yeah I'm the 26th man roster so I assume he'd be ready to go so we may see that in today's game Sammy had an interesting tweet this morning he's looking for how the pod raise control show hey Otani in this series Otani currently leading the National League in batting average three fourteen on base percentage four oh four slugging percentage six thirty nine OPS one thousand forty three home runs thirty two and runs scored eighty two and as a lead off hitter he's been even better with Mookie Betts continuing to be out of the lineup with his injury he's hitting three sixteen with a four thirty six on base percentage and eleven fifty OPS since moving into the lead off spot consistently I don't know that you're going to spend two days and completely shut down show hey Otani I know the potteries did it last year didn't go over ten in that series for the angels I think yeah I don't anticipate that happening but it's okay if he gets you once or has a couple of hits I think it's actually a bigger key all right then you gotta you gotta control everybody else Gavin Lux has been hot lately you can't let Gavin Lux go off against you in this series I mean those are you let show hey get you once even twice big deal especially if it's bases empty all right hits one four hundred and fifty feet so one run it's still just one run what you can't let happen is James Outman and Gavin Lux and those kind of guys to do a ton of damage at the bottom of the Dodgers lineup that's where all of a sudden then there's no way to bounce back you know Otani's gonna get his he's gonna get on base he'll probably hit a home run at least one in the next two days doesn't mean you're gonna lose that game especially if you keep the the base traffic off the bases in front of him at the bottom of their or yard how many times have we seen Dylan C's give up a first in a home run he might lead off the game it's not game don't give up because the Padres match up well with this Dodgers team they're ahead what five three in the season series they've matched up well against the Dodgers so far this season no one matches up against show hey Otani you know Aaron Judge got the Padres when they went to New York they did a pretty good job um Santander got him once he's got what 30 they kept Gunnar Henderson in the yard for the series if he was the Orioles he had he had a pretty tough series so you know they've matched up well against these good teams they have I think I saw the seventh best record against winning teams in in all of baseball in Major League Baseball so they'll they'll check it out again in the next couple of days and then another off down Thursday and then you know then it's a whole different challenge when the Colorado Rockies come to town a team you haven't matched up well against but you should you should absolutely own actually more nervous about those games I think you know I expect good games the next couple of days against the Dodgers I'm excited certainly not like going oh we're here we go again we're going to get swept I wouldn't be surprised if they split wouldn't be surprised if they took two but you can't be shocked if the Dodgers play well also so you know it's a it's a good compelling trade deadline time series here between the Padres and the Dodgers and definitely excited about it and we'll see if if either team has some more players I Tommy Edmonds not back yet he's still finishing his rehab after wrist surgery so I don't think he'll be activated for this series they should have Michael Copac in their bullpen that they picked up in that three-way trade yesterday as well from the White Sox so they'll have an extra arm in their bullpen they also picked up a meta of Missario yesterday which surprised me because I would have said he was already on the Dodgers but apparently he wasn't they traded for him last year that line that's what it was but then he left in the off season and he's had a decent year so they just picked him up again trying to stop you know fill the gap at shortstop especially while Mookie's been out so they have a couple of new names that that they'll have in their lineup over the next couple of days as well are you two minutes left are you kidding me there's not going to be I mean not just the Padres there hasn't been any there hasn't been a single trade since last night at about what eight thirty you said when Jeff passing reported the Solaire to the to the Braves deal it is almost 1 p.m. on the East Coast 13 hours and 20 minutes since the last trade and we're now five hours away from the trade deadline yeah what's is so lucky minute and a half left like I go on vacation it's chaos you guys are mad upon John what's goes is like yeah nothing happened I don't miss anything yeah my thing might as well go to Hawaii that nothing big is going to happen that you're going to miss on the show right now do the Padres make a trade yes yes are you surprised is it a move you think you're like whoa no I didn't see that comment I think it's it's going to be something we saw coming it's going to be a Tyler Anderson or a Cal Quantrill I mean maybe a Jack Flaherty I think that's probably that's as crazy as it is crazy as it will get I don't think it's going to be Blake Snell coming back sorry Padres fans as much as you might like that it might be a name that we weren't on the radar but it'll be someone along those lines it'll be a middle the back of the rotation starter that hopefully can pitch on Friday what's going on in major league baseball this morning how has there not been one damn move are they all just are they all playing a game of chicken with each other having some mimosas and enjoying their morning and just waiting I mean I can see that the teams that are buying are waiting for the price tag they're so close now yeah at some point the sellers start feeling the pressure like the clock is the only thing that's working against them because they can hold out forever but the clock keeps that from happening so they're gonna have to make a trade and if the sellers say if the buyers say if I just hold out another couple of hours maybe he'll come back to my price like my final offer and and I won't have to give up anymore so maybe we're in that kind of endgame here for the trade deadline whatever it is anything else then we'll keep you up to date coming up next have a safe flight would be for Paulie I'm Ben we'll talk to you tomorrow morning AJ Preller eight o'clock tomorrow right here on San Diego's number one sports station 97 three the fam
