[Music] Good to be with you today, Eric Carpenter with you on K-C-V-L, K-C-R-K. Well, it's really been not bad weather as far as helping the firefighters go. We're going to talk a little bit about our fire situation and a variety of other things here on this Thursday. Good to have you with us here on the radio. Pertusis, it's also known as whooping cough, a notable increase this year from last year. Here in Stevens County, there have been four confirmed cases so far. We talked with Northeast Tri-County Health District and got more information about the respiratory disease. My name is Molly Cordino. I'm the Community Health Director at Northeast Tri-County Health that shares some information on Pertusis, better known as whooping coughs. Watching Penn State statewide has about 424 cases reported this year. At the same time last year, there was 32 cases so this is a higher increase. Currently here in Stevens County, we have had a few cases and then of course, Panhandle is also seeing some cases too as well. Transmission for whooping cough is person to person. That usually occurs when you're in an airspace with somebody and they cough or sneeze and then you contract it usually after exposure to it. Within about five to ten days, somebody will start to show system. Because it is transmitted person to person, we'd encourage if you don't feel well to stay home but we wouldn't necessarily encourage anyone to avoid any areas at this time. The testing would be done through your local medical provider and typically you want to do that as soon as possible with symptoms. With Pertusis, it usually starts like a general cold and then you get that prolonged cough that has that whooping sound to it that you need to whooping coughs. And then especially those under a year or a higher risk for severe cases of Pertusis or whooping cough which would be more like pneumonia. Typically though, it starts out with kind of that general cold like runny nose, not feeling well, maybe a slight cough and then that progresses from there. Adult is very similar to that mild cold like symptoms that first week and then we see that cough with the whooping towards the end. And that cough can linger anywhere from roughly six to ten weeks and then most people over time do start to feel better. So it's not necessarily a long term unless in those severe cases. Especially again with infants under one, there's a higher risk of complications with Pertusis. It does not mean it could not occur in adults but it does not occur at the same rate. So after Pertusis or whooping cough you will have immunity and have a natural immunity to it. You won't necessarily do the same kind of testing as you would during an active infection. They can check in to make sure that you have immunity through what they call a titer. So we would encourage people to stay up to date on their immunizations for Pertusis, which for those under 10 we're looking at D-TAP. Once we get to over 10 then we're talking about your T-TAP, which is your tetanus with theory of Pertusis. Especially if you have kids going to seventh grade, we'd encourage you get up to date on that because you'll need that at the start of school this year. And then once you're above 18, you should get another dose of T-TAP too as well. With anyone who tests Pertusis for Pertusis, we make sure that they have been able to find treatment. And then we encourage they do stay home until they've completed that treatment, which is usually a five day course of antibiotic, or through 21 days if they're not treated as well. And if I just can't put it, I would just say, remember to wash your hands frequently and often stay home if you do not feel well. And then talk to your medical provider if you think you've been exposed to Pertusis or in the additional care. We want to make sure the community is aware that in the state of Washington, we're seeing an elevated spread of Pertusis, and it is possible to occur within our county's due as well. So we just want to make sure people take preventative measures, like making sure they're up to date on their immunizations. And then of course, if you know you've been exposed and you're not feeling well, stay home, call your provider to seek care. Since we talked with the health department for the report, the Washington State Department of Health has 20, 24 year-to-date confirmed and probable cases. This so through July the 20th, a total of 458 cases statewide that compared to 32 cases. Reported at the same time last year, the comparisons are primarily on symptom onset dates. The county with the most number of cases, Clark County, with 159 followed by King County, Shallan County with 62 cases followed by Pierce, Naomi Spokane's had 21 cases. Here in Stevens County, four cases so far this year. At Adamhood of Tire Pros, we're more than just a tire shop or complete automotive repair shop. When we look at the fires over in Ferry County, the two fires, the Swawilla and the Bridge Creek fires, the Northern Rockies complex incident management team, continuing to support both fires. They did have favorable weather conditions yesterday. They were focusing on burnout operations and the Keller community and structure protections. Now there's been some concerns about where the evacuation levels are. Midday yesterday, there were no changes to the current evacuation levels for that fire. They are taking this very seriously as far as safety goes for both the public and the firefighters. The strategic firing operations used along Highway 21, south of Keller, and along constructed dozer lines west and north of Keller. They're connecting to the Jack Creek Road. The overnight shifts used unmanned aircraft systems to initiate firing operations on the north side of Mount Tolman to burn out pockets of vegetation strengthening their containment lines. The fire managers using the current favorable weather to initiate strategic burning operations plan on doing that over the next few days. Although they are expecting the hotter air mass to move in, they're also very concerned about possible thunderstorms coming in Friday night through Saturday night. The Keller ferry is continuing with limited service to assist with the evacuations. Also, the Republic Fairgrounds does remain open for helping the victims of these two fires. They don't plan any changes at this point in time. So people of that area are certainly welcome and their animals are welcome up at the ferry county fairgrounds. I don't want to forget, make sure mark your ballot. Either drop it in the mailbox or drop it off at one of the county vote boxes. They're all over the county, including out behind the courthouse here in Colville. We've got the primary election right around the quarter. Here we are to the 1st of August. We have only got till the 6th. Make sure and mark your ballot up. Some of it, you may need to look at the voters' pamphlet to decide on some of the statewide issues. But let's not let this primary election go by without voting. Especially if you are down in District 1 for Stevens County. You've got three people vying for the county commissioner job. And we want to make sure that the top two that the voters really want move on to the general election. So don't forget, it is a primary election time, and it's easy to, you know, such a long period of time you've had that ballot, easy to just forget to mark it and get it mailed in. But it's kind of important. So let's make sure and get a good percentage of voters here in Stevens County getting those ballots back in. God water? Why not have great water? The accident occurred about 8 in the morning yesterday. Two water main breaks caused by hitting that fire hydrant. Flooded roads and nearby properties, 10 inches of water were in the streets from the flooding. The Puyallup finally got water service restored about 5.30 last night. The basements of some houses had to be pumped out due to the flooding. Some people reporting water was waist high in their basements. So it wasn't a good morning yesterday around the Puyallup area that with the flooding from hitting the fire hydrant. Not a good day for the Seattle Mariners yesterday. The game had to go to 10 innings. Normally that's pretty good for the Mariners. But they did lose yesterday to the Boston Red Sox three to two. It was a 10th inning where Boston was able to get a run. Danny Janssen had a tying single in the sixth. Then Boston took two of three from the Mariners. Of course the Mariners right in that tight race with Houston atop the American League West. So the Mariners getting ready to come back to Seattle. They didn't do too well. Their last home stand in Seattle. But travel day today and the Mariners returning home Friday opening a three game set. That'll be against Philadelphia at Seattle. Not announcing a starting pitcher yet for Friday's game. Today's local weather forecast is brought to you by LMK floors located at 1175 B South Maine in Colville.
