All-Star Closer, Ken Lee Janssen, we have a question. "What's the best podcast of all time?" "This ball isn't boring, baby." I'm Rob Radford, and every single day I'm sitting down with the biggest names to show you this great game is the greatest game. It's my podcast, it's my passion, it's a cause I started more than two years ago, and it's now the most prolific national daily baseball pod. There is another fact, so jump aboard, the BIB Express. Gretchen Fourier, Fitzi is in for Fourier, and of course, practice is now a motor down, done and over with on what I thought was going to be a little more of a work day, day off yesterday, but no full pads for today's practice as the six rings post game show and podcast invade Gretchen Fourier, because Fitzi and Hart are here, and a little surprised that they backed off the accelerator today here, Hart. Yeah, a little bit going in the shells, and I think even some of the players were surprised of on Gotcha, and some of those guys were kind of talking about it. Now they did, I don't know if you want to call it conditioning, they did it. I mean, basically the whole first hour was like running and drills. I like that one where they were running like that big arc. Oh, yeah, that half moon boy, that was something. We were half-gesting players can run at that first guy. His guy's tone is not okay. Sometimes he finds that line and just puts one toe on it, and then he puts another one across it. Speaking of tone, I'm not going to tell you who it was, but everybody listening can probably figure it out if I say I'm sitting with two media members. They were like, you know how we made funny you when you said zero wins was in play? Doesn't seem so funny anymore. I'm telling you, the tone and tenor of this camp is not going in a positive direction. Talking about putting yourself out. He yelled at me from my tone, and then put himself over for zero wins. Now what we call the bigger dichotomy than foe yet. I mean, you see who is that left tackle today? Oh, I saw. Was that Vadarian blow? Oh, low. Oh, that was low. Excuse me. I thought it was actually Gresha's bestie, Caden Wallach. I don't like that. That was it for a few days. Now you're changing names. The line, big jerk. It's not been changed. He's been calling that since the line. The line isn't good. I mean, yeah, you got Matthew Judon out here today. Although the first thing I would ask is, yeah, he was out here when you weren't in pads. It's the padded days he skips today. He's not a padded day. He's smart because he's not going to tax his body too much a during practice. He probably will play next to 0.0% of the preseason snaps, especially if he's not on the team. He's going to be in he's going to be in load management mode as long as possible. So he can showcase why he's worth two for 40 somewhere else next year. If Elliot Wolf isn't going to give him the deal. Now one of the things that we have on the Six Rings podcast, Grash, is we call it the Hartosk. Yeah. And that's where Andy tells us every day, after this practice, am I closer to zero wins, or am I closer to his ceiling for this team, which is six wins. Which is kind of sad in and of itself. Yes, which is sad. So the perfect practice would get a six-win season. Get a six. So today was today a 0.5. I mean, we were joking up here that it looked like it was going to be time for like a three-legged race or like a watermelon eating contest or. Yeah, it wasn't great. It was a family picnic that involved some football. Well, you know what it reminded me of? So it was basically a full hour of just drills running, conditioning, stretching, calisthetics, whatever you want to call it. OTA work. Well, I would have thought this was I just showed up at insert, M-I-A-A Massachusetts high school here on the first Friday when they're not allowed to do anything. And they can only run and ramp up right there. Except this is day seven coming off a day off. They're already in pads, right? Not today, but they're in the padded segment of training camp. And yet it felt like a build-up day. And you know, Gerard is doing his thing and he talked about it. We're going to have undulating practice schedules. And we're going to have days when we're a little longer and a little shorter. And it's hot and it's not hot. And we're going to read our players. I just you know what really I thought was symbolic for me. And I don't know if you guys noticed this. So in one of the last team segments, they ran. Because everybody's been talking about the lack of number of plays. Like it's a minute and a half between plays and there's no tempo. And you guys know there's a play call. Yeah, I was you yelled at me for mentioning that. But today they used at least three or four plays on trying to draw the defense off sides. And I did it once, right? And they tried to do it multiple times. No, but I'm saying they did it once. Hence the lap you had to take. But to me, you haven't reached that point yet. That is like 301 or 401 of offense. I need 101. I need when Kyle Dugger blitzes, he's not untouched running at the quarterback. I need, you know, Josh Uche coming off the left edge, at least somebody getting a finger on him. I need to be able to run the zone boot without, you know, they're being the quarterback under pressure. Like, yeah, they're going to block the pass. Like rush, I love attention to detail. I don't think we've reached the point where we should be attending to detail. We need to get a base offense in. We need to get successful. That said, I'm doing it. I touched on it earlier in the week. I'm doing it the best, most consistent offensive player through seven practices. I think it might be the guy we talked about. Three, two, one, Thor, oh, oh, Jalen Rager. Wow. Rager's been good. Thornton's been better. And Thornton gets over today for one simple reason. Wow. Two reps in the red zone. One on ones versus Dion Sanders. I mean, Christian Gonzalez, and he toasted him twice. I got to do a stutter step to the right. Look quick. I see this on hold on. Now this is this is this is a real heart move right here. Because and he's already laughing because he busts my balls. But I know what he's doing. What am I doing? Oh, you're finding a way to push back on all the people who were anointing Christian Gonzalez better than you think he is. Is that? I know your tricks while you might be right. I'm presenting facts. I you you are. That may or may or may not support one narrative and cut into another. OK, be that as it may. It's purely circumstantial. Selective facting because I because you're you're you're making a good point. That's positive, but also grind in the acts at the same time. For every up there's a down to me with the tempo. Truth is never me. You just yell at me for it. I just generally mock the tempo in like a funny voice and you go. Oh, yeah. I because it deserves it after we've been down here for a week and a half and now everybody's going, oh, oh, maybe they don't know what they're doing down here. But no, I also think, you know, it's one thing for Tyquan Thornton to have, you know, string together some practices and make some plays against, you know, Alec Austin or whatever the hell his name is. Alex Austin or Isaiah Bolden. Oh, yeah. Again, how many times are we going to have the conversation? Is this the preseason where we take the cheese? Is this efficient now? I'm taking the cheese today. You are. You are. I took the cheese. You are. Cheese and Unfortunate. If you're watching Twitch, twitch.tv/box. Hi, how are you? Hi. How are you? Let it be known that today, August 1, 2024, one week away from the first pretend season game, Andy Hart says it is officially time to take the cheese on to Quan Thornton. And I'm going to tell you, I am going to regret this moment. I am. I know. I mean, everyone before shot at a wedding, like, it seems like a good idea. It's not no. I hate to say it. You probably are because he's got to play unbelievable to knock someone off the field. And it's pretty evident. They're going to force Polk and Baker into this thing. They're going to make mistakes, taking reps from guys that might be a little more further along in their football life because the sneaky goal this year is to develop a suck. And that's how you do it. Develop a suck. But also a foundational at the pro shop, by the way, develop a suck. I don't know. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. I have the one for the pro shop from six rings to six wins. Oh, we're getting six wins. I like it. Upside, baby. Honestly, if I had a team, the fact that I had really for him, if I just seemed to be proud of, if I had a team to be proud of, and I could see that they were pointing the ship in the right direction. And we had some playmakers, most importantly, including a quarterback, I would be fine on all on board with six wins, plus I would cash in on my bed of over four and a half. Oh, well, there you go. So I would not cash my bed of zero, zero, plus 3900. Um, what else? Oh, I did that. What else stood out today? I mean, we were looking for, I, we saw Jude on, he was doing some gasters out there. Okay. Now, very interesting because you were the one you and I have kind of almost like come up on a conspiracy theory together a little bit. So today, before Mayo smoke, spokes, which by the way, Freudian slip, Mayo spoke 13 minutes early today. Oh, I know. I missed it. To avoid, to avoid people like you. Yep. Okay. So that was, you literally missed it. That was planned. And about five minutes before Mayo came out out, the old universal studios backlot entrance. There was quiet Matt Judon, who went and sat in the athletic training thing down there until everybody came out and then he came out on the field to get ready to do everything else. So he didn't run behind Mayo today. He kind of went the other way. Right. Now when all the media was over here, he's over there running gasters at the end of practice as well. What do you make of the way Judon handled it? Okay. Fine coach. I'll go do my job. Well, you know, he was trying to play good soldier, I guess, early in camp, he had this thing where he thought he said all the right things he didn't by saying I signed it. I got to play on it. Like you lost leverage. You shouldn't have said that. I thought it was interesting today because I did ask people because, you know, God forbid I show up at fricking 1027 for a 1030 press conference that they had already put away the backdrop. The mics were gone. I'm like, yeah, what are we doing here? I thought they were going to tell us all these things is. And you're right. I think it was intentional to try to miss some reporters and not get the full. And I was told he even joked like, Hey, that wasn't bad. I thought you guys were going to be tough on me today or something like when you come out 15 minutes early. So I don't see the need for that. I know he likes to fill dead air, but to me, like that right there, if I want to be a real a hole and sometimes I'm in a mood, like when the media stood in front of me today and I hadn't moved and I couldn't see an effing play because all these jackasses have to stand up and move down the hill and I can't see what's going on. You're an a hole. You're a self centered a hole. All your reporters anyway, if you're listening, but he, he says, he says, I think friends and winning friends. He says, you know, you guys weren't that bad today or I thought you were going to be tougher. You know, I can be an a hole and say, are you in over your head as a head coach just months into your tenure? Like, do you want me to be an a hole? Cause I think people are trying to be professional. They're trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. They're trying to play, you know what I mean? Do it the right way. He's right. Why poke the bear? He's nice. He would be nice to hear and I think there's, but then don't mock us and say we weren't tough on you. It's dumb. That's borderline mocking, right? Well, let me ask you this. Would it have been out of bounds to say something like or to ask a question along the lines of, Hey coach, I'm not sure if you've stayed in a hotel recently and got a copy of USA. Today, however, they just released their list of the 32 coaches ranked. You were ranked 30th. How does that make you feel? Oh yeah. I'm not 32. You know who I'm not. Abraham Flus. Who are the two behind him? Uh, Abraham Flus and the guy from Carolina. Oh, uh, can I, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, can Alice tight pants offensive guy. Oh yeah. He gets his ass for a while. Cheated on his wife. Oh, no, it doesn't matter. He wears tight pants. Her redemption story. He runs tight pants and knows Sean McVeigh therefore he's worthy to be a head coach and sends his assistant coaches home by Thursday and four on Friday. That's not a good idea. No, but anyway, it was Dennis Allen, the coach of the Saints. Oh, okay. Oh, I, I, I'm rooting for Dennis Allen to get bumped only because one of my former teammates there in Rizzi is in waiting to finally get a head coaching job and he would get to take that situation over for in all seriousness. To me guys like mayo should be at the bottom like you got to prove yourself. They should be. Of course. It's just like, you know, you put the rookie at the bottom of a depth chart and then you move him up when the competition like he doesn't and this is not a shot. He doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt. He's never been a head coach. He's never called plays. He's been a coach for five years like there's a lot that he doesn't know and if we're even judging it on the first week, hasn't done a good job. Let me ask a question. How would this have gone over because we keep mentioning that we want to try to avoid comparisons between the mayo and bell check air and mayo and bell check, but they're inevitable, Andy. Sure. So just compare them to 2001 and 2000, not 2020 and 2007, which is why you drew that quality parallel the other day about Terry. Yeah. Uh, Terry. Sorry. Terry Glenn off the phone. Sorry. Terry. I got a lot of moving parts. I'm also trying to set up where I'm going with this. So land the pound. How would this? It's going to be bumpy on the landing, but at least, but. So I'm going to cheer when you land. Is someone recording this bit to help you work in town? Right. Yes. I'm trying to do a tight fight. How do you think this would have gone over in the bell check era? And is this a part of the say too, much Jerrod Mayo era? Mark Daniels just tweeted out 12 minutes ago, Jalen Polk said that Jerrod Mayo told the group in a team meeting that they're going to be a quote running team this season. Oh, I can't imagine that and he mean that in the, we're going to run the football or the way that Austin Hooper said, if we're not good at football, we can be a cross country team because we can't run plays properly because that's what I joked about today with all that running. Maybe they picked cross country. That's why they did so much condition. I mean, like you're not like, Hey, everybody, I mean, we already knew because van Pelt said it like we mentioned in that Instagram video, like, I believe, you know, running the football is the fundamental scoring points of the NFL. Yeah. Great. And if the coach says that that's fine, he can balance the plays out when the, when the, when the players are now running out to be like, coach, don't assist today. Plus if I'm a wide receiver, I'm like, Hey, is that because you don't think we're very good. We're going to, we're going to secretly be a passing team. So go out there and tell them, Jalen, go tell them we're going to be a running team. First play from scrimmage. 65 yards. Oh, we're doing rope. Nope. We're doing rope. Nope. All these bad passes by the quarterbacks. It's, it's not that they're under pressure and it's not that they can't find anybody. It's that it's, they don't want anybody to know that they're a great offense throwing the football. No, it's, and I don't want to be over the top negative. It is what it is. No, I don't. Um, they're like, there's, there's some frustration. I thought your people fit see, um, your, they don't know what to do. They missed the net and didn't put it in the little, you know, the three holes, um, which holes are they? Andy. Um, you know what? In all, but I remember we've talked about hard of the whole 2021 season. I just pulled those numbers up for the team stats cause that was a 17 game season. 306, sorry, 535 attempts, 489 rushes. That is that, you know, you're, so you're right there. One or two different per game, right along the course of a C and that was full season rookie quarterback. Right. This will be probably half season rookie quarterback made. That was a guy. Yeah. And it was a guy that we knew was probably going to be able to beat out cam Newton and take that job and wasn't Mack Jones, you know, that Michael Holly comment the other night. That bothered you, didn't it? It really did because Mack Jones actually was further along in his development. That was the whole entire reason why somebody in the organization said, Hey, Bill, we have to take Mack Jones because he looks pro ready, his, his greatest asset is his brain. He's a, he's older at that point. Like your guy, Drake May, that everyone is now calling Drake maybe he's a disaster. Oh my God. This is how the Mayo air is not a disaster. People are freaking out. Okay. You ready for this? How about this? Who? Colin Coward. Oh, she said on his radio. Do you see what he said? No, I didn't. No, I didn't. What do I care? No, you know why. Because he was a national platform because he's because all he does is troll everybody. That's how he got that national platform. Can I guess? Cause I haven't seen this. Can I guess? Do you want it? Should we do it now? Are you done? No, Jesus. He said either Zappi or Milton can win the job. What did he say? Andy, don't be surprised if Joe Milton wins this job. Listen, I got yelled at in '08 by the people of ESPN saying, Oh, you can't fill in for Colin. You're too edgy. I said, why? Because I don't make up crap. Still, 20 years. So, you know what in you just, no, I'm not. I'm not. Do you think I would literally know, but you were going to freak out because he said that. I did. I get it. I get the art. I know, I know the reason the troll farms that are a lot of these shows cause they want, they want the reaction as Andy has said time and again. Even troll won't fall for that. Who is it? Pritzco who told you like, Oh, if I want to make sure I get some clicks and activation on my piece. All I can do is pay for the Patriots. Absolutely. No, it's very true. That, that's ridiculous. I mean, Milton's done a nice job, but in very limited reps. Very limited reps. And he's had plenty of mistakes on his own. The difference is there's no expectation for him. He's not the number three overall pick. Drake May faces expectation. If you just flip those guys, it's why my buddy Paul Perrillo said this draft weekend. And I kind of agreed with him. It's a, um, curious pick in the sense that it puts pressure on Drake May when you have a guy that is a known star kind of commodity as a six round pick with a strong arm and the things people can lust after kind of we stuff we he's got a strong arm, but can he run an offense? Right. You know, football games, like those are the issues. And buddy, he, that he's the shiny object and you're going to give people and Ben Volin already started it. That's where, that's where he got this from. Ben Volin tweeted something about Joe, thanks a lot. Thanks a lot. And there have been. I'm going to be the full objective Andy. They're all troll. There have been portions of practices where Milton was better than May. That's just the reality. He was better backflips. I get it. Oh, he definitely does better backflips. And those are the biggest cheers you get here on the big pops. Absolutely. That and the rager catch in the corner. Absolutely. And rager's been good. But I think the problem with a lot of these is what is Jalen Rager? He's a former first round bust. And what is Taekwon Thornton, a second round bust, right? Like all these guys that you guys are putting hope in and I'm putting hope in. People are like the cheese thing. Am I really going to take that cheese? Am I really going to fall for this? You know, it's better to put it in unproven guys like Baker or Polk because at least you haven't seen them let you down in September and October and November and you're still hopeful and I am too. And I think they are going to be, you know, Cole Strange was given a starting job. They needed Cole Strange to start and play like he was going to be given that spot as a first round pick. These guys are going to be given opportunity. I'll be very stunned if they're like healthy scratches like they want them on the field. They want them getting opportunity developing. And I do think they believe they have upside and they believe they can make plays. And they've shown, they've shown that they got some juice. Now next level, you're going to block, you're going to run over the middle. It's kind of like the next layer. Like they've done enough that has Baker and Polk to be like, all right, we're going to get them some action here. Now it's, do they do the little things to stay on the field? And it's, you know, similar to Zappi, you're the fourth string quarterback. We've seen you fail. We've seen your highs. We've seen your lows. We have the book on you. If he were unknown, would he be higher on the depth chart right now? Maybe. Because he's made some throws. He doesn't get a ton of reps. So it's really hard to kind of gauge what he's doing. But the book is out on him. They've decided what he is. And I think fans have to. I don't think fans want to see Bailey Zappi getting a bunch of reps in the preseason to try to win some competition because the head coach said the word of camp was competition. Fans want Drake made a develop. It's very simple. And some of us have observed, I'd like him to develop a little faster, a little better. Yeah. And I think the head coach is learning to in the beginning, it was, we're going to air it out. People can say what they want. Hey, what about Matt June on? Well, we're going to keep that in the walls, but you didn't already. I mean, he did a podcast. Yeah. You're arguing with him in front of the media for everybody to see now just be transparent. Like you said, you were going to be or now it's back to the old way, or just be honest and say, I gave him too much rope and I've learned, you know, there are some that would be nice. There are something that would be that that would be a refresher because you still have like gotcha saying he needs to get his contract. He's our brother. You guys love them. Everybody loves them. We want them to get his contract. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Like you still have people comment. Like that was an old Bella check. You don't, you don't comment in contracts. First of all, you certainly don't vote on someone else's Congo. Yeah. That's a big deal. Hard. I'll see you tomorrow. Yes. I will be here tomorrow. And this time I'm actually, we're going to talk in advance. Yes. Well, you got, you got a days notice prior planning prevents piss poor performance. How do you guys perform today? Excellent show. The reviews are already in. Are they? Yes. I'll check. Yeah. I'll go back when I get to the station and check the text line to see what it says. I'll read those tonight in a segment of the rich key show. Oh, yeah. Thoughts on Fitzy 10 to 2. G.O.F. And G.F.Y. Okay. See you guys. All right. Hard. No food today either. All right. I know. How about this? Can't even get a freaking lunch. Aquafina and diet pips these times. But meanwhile. Metallica. Metallica. Those stage looks cool with all the circular video. You're not allowed to say that. I didn't. Okay. All right. Let's break that from the record. But describe. How about if I tell people check to see if there's still tickets available because you might want to come on down to Joel at stadium the stage and the performance looks like it's going to be a banger. I'll tell you what all you got to do is plenty of plenty of space in the stands for practice and then just hang out. There you go. It was hot outside. Yeah. It was. No offense. But if I'm a fan today. I've been hot in New England. I'm looking for a pool. A beach. Uh huh. Yes. But there's nobody on the field that I need to see. All right. - There's no breath is my spray. - I'm right!
