We're glad you're with us here on this Bears Victory Friday with OpenFoLind for you, 312-332-ESPN-3323776. You heard the voice of Jeff Joniak. You heard the voice of Tom Thayer. The voices of the Chicago Bears right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN 1000. Cap is just good to see football back on our screens and on our air here on ESPN Chicago with the Bears coming through on a rain-soaked shortened game as the Bears go on to victory. Good to see it back on our TV. I enjoyed watching it. I taped it and I had to coach the captains, our team up in Niles, the Glenview team. And so I taped it. I said, please, nobody tell me anything. I'm watching it as live. I got through it. Didn't look at my phone. I'd get in the house. I turn it on and I sat there. I watched that till, God, I don't know, 10.30 at least. Went through all of it and then it got rain canceled at the end. But watching that two hour infomercial for the Chicago Bears and watching the interview with Kevin Warren and Ryan Polls and here in Joe Bucko. Well, the job this guy's done. He's pointing at Polls, remaking this roster and you can see Ryan. It's all excited. By the way, he's gotten skinny, damn. And Kevin Warren talking about, look, our focus is the museum campus. It's the most beautiful piece of real estate anywhere in the country. But we also own Arlington Heights. You can tell he's kind of torn. What do I do here? He's vacillating back and forth because he's political just like the city is. It's what we talked about, Cat. He knows. Correct. And you and I both know, Arlington Heights is the spot but he's just trying to appease Mayor Johnson and just letting the game. Governor Pritzker know I know what's going on here but I'm mentioning you guys and we're going back and forth. But to watch that two plus hour infomercial where the everything they said was the bears are going in the right direction. And I hear Troy Aikman and we'll play some of Troy's comments in a little bit about what he thinks Caleb's going to do this year. I'm like, feed it into my veins. Let's go. And then we walk off the Cardinals on the other TV. I'm like, oh my God, let's go. Good night. A good, rare night for Chicago sports yesterday. Let's just start here. I'm glad that the ones we're not playing yesterday. Nice turf, Canton. Does that come in amends? My God, we complained for years about the turf and soldier field because the turf monsters. You see what happened yesterday, Cat? Not saying that it would have led to an injury but the idea that you want to keep your players safe. I'm glad that the trip ups that we saw on both sides with the Texas and the Bears happened with the twos and not like a DJ Moore or Caleb Williams. Not a great surface yesterday. You're correct, and there was a throw. I thought Brett Ripon really accorded himself well, albeit against guys who probably won't be in the league, but he threw the football very well. Colin Johnson, oh my God, that guy's a beast. He'll be on the football team. But Brett Ripon tried to step into a throw to his left down the field and you saw his foot just slide out from under him and it was still a pretty good throw. Yeah. And I'm thinking, boy, if that's Caleb and you twist an ankle, God forbid worse, we'd be furious. Like, what are you guys doing? Putting them out in this meaningless game? Yet there were people calling in all day yesterday. I listened to the station, all day long. I can't believe we're not playing him. That field? No. Hey, Troy Aikman said it himself. He would have liked to see Caleb Williams out there. But again, there's four preseason games. It's four. The old schoolers, I thought about this after our show yesterday and I was like, why didn't I say this to Cap during the show? You ever do that? And we'll punch the steering wheel like, why did I bring that point up? As soon as the elevator, we walk out together for people that don't know every day. Hoodie and I stand at the, we've only been together for four and a half hours and we stand at the elevator with you blocking the door 'cause I get off at two, you get off at five, and we talk, we keep going. And I get my car, I'm like, son of a, I should have told him that. And more often than not, I will call you. I should have said to you on the air, we have to understand the Tom Thayer's, the waddles, the yerks, the triakmans. They played four plus preseason games. Correct. They are even more than that. Wasn't more than that five? It might have been. I mean, so I understand their perspective. They also had two days. Yes, I understand their perspective. Their perspective is you play every preseason game. You gotta get yourself ready, get yourself in shape, that kind of thing. But again, sports evolves, football evolves. And because it's a rare situation now that the Bears have four, there's three more for them that wants to play in to be able to get comfortable. So the idea that Caleb Williams and the one should have played yesterday, my whole thought is, well, it's four. So the next game against Buffalo on the road, unfortunately, that's where Caleb Williams is gonna get some reps and then at home and then against Kansas City at Arrowhead. So, I mean, a lot of this is the old school players that dows with the neural fingers. Those guys should play two of days, sometimes three of days. Or sweater balls off or getting in shape. How come, well, because that's not what football is today. That's why. So in 1979, when I was playing in Division III, we had three of days. I get it. Three of days, two of them were padded. That was Division III. You imagine what they were doing at Alabama and Texas A&M and Michigan and Ohio. Beating a heck out of each other all day, all night. Get up and do it again. I was in a golf event, Jimbo Covert is sitting there and he says to Olin, Roberto Garza. Hey, how's Club Lavi going? You guys having a nice vacation? What do you mean? One practice in the morning 'cause it's gonna get too hot. He goes, this could have us in pads for six weeks. Exactly right. Totally different, but they evolve, as you said. And on the other side of it, Shay, is this, is that we as fans are so anxious and so excited to see what it looks like. Doesn't matter if it's at Lake Forest. Doesn't matter if it's the first preseason game. You're just excited to see it. I get that. But patience is a virtue. We're going to see it in week two of the preseason. And I honestly hoodie hope after watching last night that even some of the older guys, the old school guys who think you should be out there getting ready have a come to Jesus moment. We can all make peace on this that Matt Eberfloos made the right decision. None of the starters needed to be on that slip inside of a football field last night. No, none of them. They did not. We got guys getting carted off. We got guys falling down, going to the locker room with lower body injuries. Everybody sliding all over the place. If it happens to a backup, it's a sad story for the backup. If you put your starter on the field and God forbid Caleb Williams slips and tears a ligament in his knee, your season's over. That field was atrocious. There's no way a starter should have stepped foot on that. Yeah, well, I'll say this, that I'm all for the three quarter preseason game. If this can be something that's instituted, I'm fine with it. I did not miss the fourth quarter. I didn't feel like I got chipped. Oh. (laughing) So I texted my brother 'cause I had to ask, I said, "Hey, I just got home, "I'm putting the game on now, watching it as live. "Do not, I'm going to call you about something. "Do not tell me one thing about the game." Okay. And then I'm watching the halftime a little bit. I start to fast forward and get to the second half. Oh, we took the lead. The game is under weather delay. And then I looked at my phone and it popped up a my burner account. Sure. That I only have just to follow bigs. Pops up bigs. Bears game canceled. Oh, I thought I'm bad. Yes, absolutely right. So if they want to do this, by the way, with the three quarter preseason game, I'm totally fine with it. Let's just do that. Brett Ripin, as Cap mentioned, played very well. Three touchdowns, 11 for 15, good for 166 yards. And that's the film, Brett. You want to be able to go someplace else? Show them that film. Here you go. Here's my reel to reel. Here you go. You want to see my film? Oh, pretty good kid. Wow, able to connect on some really good passes. Brett Ripin, with a Hall of Fame game performance. Any chance that they keep, I don't mean three on the active, but where he'd be the emergency third quarterback? I mean, in a league where you got 17 games and you got quarterbacks getting pounded on all the time, any chance that Brett Ripin is the third or they keep the read kit from Western Kentucky? Cause Tyson Beijing's locked in at two. So, any chance? We will say, you know, that's a camp battle. Find out on Hard Knocks. That's it. It's finding a lot of Tyler Scott stuff on Hard Knocks. Here's Brett Ripin. You know, this one, this one meant a lot for me tonight. I think, you know, sitting on a year of my last start in Green Bay didn't go the way I wanted it to. You know, I've had a bad taste of my mouth the entire off season and, you know, took the approach that, you know, I didn't really know how this year was going to look. You know, even if I was going to have an opportunity to compete for anything, you know, but just kept working hard every single day and said, you know, just going to do what I can, know how I play my basketball and try to get back to that. And so, you know, when you put in the work and it shows, it feels good. I know the feeling for some that are rolling their eyes listening to that sound by this. Well, it's just a preseason, just the first game. Imagine if Brett Ripin was overwhelmed and looked terrible. Oh, God, see, that's the perspective you have. You'd rather for him to feel comfortable in the pocket. I don't care if it's against guys that's going to be at the plant in a few weeks. It doesn't matter. He looked good out there, good for him, good for Tyson Beijing out there. Beijing, I look forward to see more of Beijing. I don't think I got enough of him. I like to see a little bit more because I know that he can nickel and dime it better than anybody. Last year, they were showing he was two and two as a starter. I'm like, you know what? Undrafted kid, they just dropped him in when Justin got injured. Bam, he looked fine, not a franchise quarterback, by any means at this point, but it was super cool just to see that infomercial for the Bears. All right, we'll take your phone calls coming up. As we were the phone lines, Cap, one of the major storylines for the first game for the preseason was what special teams will look at, like with the kickoffs. And it was just an odd formation to see the Bears and the Texans lined up and then the person that's supposed to catch the ball doesn't have a lot of space, Cap. Here's what I don't understand about this. The NFL is always preaching safety and all we gotta make sure it's safe. Can I tell you something? I don't know how that's safer when you think about it. That formation to me, how much time does the guy that's gonna catch the ball really have to survey the scene? I think it's pretty much, I think it's more sudden with this than it was with the old formation. - So I felt like I was watching an XFL game with that formation for the kick. I think, again, I said to you after the game, I called you, we talked for a while about it. Tyler Scott got rocked. I mean, stopped in his tracks. So I don't see how there's any more safety. Just give him the ball at the 25 yard line and let's go. Just get rid of it. Just started the 25 yard, no kick off. - Right, and I said last night to you, and I said it on my recap, just, I'm willing to, you know, I don't know exactly how I feel I need to watch more of it, but I just, I don't need it. - It's just a weird gimmick. First of all, you want these special teams guys that are jacked up on whatever to stay in still. - Right. - It's a special teams guy. First of all, if you're on special teams, you're nuts. - Well, then they have-- - You're certified. - I'm watching the game and the referee, you couldn't hear him 'cause they were doing an interview, which I get that's part of the Hall of Fame thing. And then they came back and they went to the official in the booth. He said, yeah, we had a legal procedure on Chicago because you can't move. And you had a couple guys like so anxious, your feet were moving. - Exactly, like in place, but they're moving. - You know what that is, Cap? You don't have special teams. You're just like, your hair's on fire. - Because you're wild. - Because you want to hit someone but you also want someone who's going to hit you? - Yes, that's all. The idea that you're supposed to be standing there like a statue like, all right, we're gonna wait for the ball to be kicked. - Yeah. - I have the patience of Job. I'll wait, Cap, there is, you don't have special teams. - Your head's on a swivel, man. - You're yelling, you're yelling like, whoa, let's go, let's go get this guy, right? - Yeah, I don't need this. - I don't think I need it. - Cap, I, again, Goodell's always preaching safety. - That looks safe to you? - No, Tyler Scott also got his head knocked off. - But there's nothing on a football field that's safe. Just that's waddle in York. Everywhere they turn, they were getting popped. - Even Devin Hester, the Hall of Famer, was like, eh, not so sure about this. - With Devin Hester, one of the greatest returnmen of all time, I gotta get your take on this new kickoff rule. What you've seen so far, what do you think? - I'm watching it, man. I'm surprised that we're not seeing no big runs. You know that's shocking, you know what I mean? But hey, this is the first season, the first game. So I'm figuring a lot of course you're gonna evaluate this game and try to figure out what they can do to utilize to get some more big plays in there. But right now, it's kinda shaky right now, but who knows, first game, we'll see. - A little shaky right now. - We'll see. - That means, I don't know about this. - You saw it, it's kinda cool to see the big green box on the screen, the big green, that's where the kick returner is supposed to be. But those guys who just lined up in a formation and just supposed to stand still and you kick the ball, they wanna get more excitement out of that. But I don't see a path for a return, do you? 'Cause that's what they want, yards and excitement. - You'd have to break through the first wave and then you could be gone. Like, Devin, if he broke through the first wave, I just, I don't need it. - Just, I think it's weird. - All right, three, one, two, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our phone number. Your thoughts about yesterday's game with the Bears winning 21-17. Did you watch? Did you listen right here on the home of the Bears? ESPN, Chicago, check in with us as we go to Schomburg. Here's Anthony with us on Cap and Jay Hood. Anthony, good morning. - Morning, guys. I think we've seen a glimpse of the Shane Waldron offense. I think it is gonna be a past heavy attack like it was in Seattle. With that said, I know that Sylvia was ripping on Cap for saying he'd be mad if Caleb Williams didn't reach 4,000 yards. And I gotta say, I agree with you, Cap, because if you look at Geno Smith numbers, in 2022, 4,200 yards, 30 touchdowns, 23, 30, 600 yards, 20 touchdowns. I think Caleb Williams is gonna be a beast and he was bringing up all these quarterbacks. Their rookie year and how good they did. And there was so few of them that did good. And the ones that did good, he doesn't think Williams is gonna be as good as them. But look at the weapons he has. - Who doesn't think it'd be as good? Who, Sylvia? - Yeah, Sylvia. - Well, all I know is a triangement last night said, we'll play the audio, but triangement said, he believes he'll easily pass 4,000 yards. I personally will be disappointed if he's healthy. Again, health plays into everything. If he plays 16 or 17 games and he doesn't throw over 4,000 yards, I will be very disappointed. - I agree with you. - So he's not, that's fine. - But I would be. - All right, Anthony. - I agree. - All right, we appreciate the telephone call. My feeling on it is it doesn't matter to me. Here's what matters to me, that the bears get better. And if it's 3,700 yards, if it's 4,000 yards, as long as the young man is upright and getting better, as long as the offensive percolate, I don't care what the numbers are. I don't care if he just throws five-yard passes, as long as the bears are better as a franchise. Because here's the thing, I will never be caught in the trick bag because there's pie in the sky, thoughts about the Chicago Bears, if they don't get into the Super Bowl or win the NFC or win the NFC North, there's all these lofty expectations for Caleb Williams in year number one. I have perspective, and the perspective is, there's very few rookie quarterbacks who are able to get to the kind of numbers that people think that he can get to. I think eventually he can get there. If he does, it's great, but if he doesn't, I'm not disappointed. That's the whole thing. When you have people looking at Caleb Williams and say, well, he'll be able to surpass CJ Stroud, and he'll be just as good as Andrew Luck, or just as good, can we just let the young man cook? Can we do that first? - I agree. - Can we just let him cook? Can we let the offense cook? Can we see balance on both sides of the football, offense and defense? It's not an argument for me. You're right, Sylvie's right. I just want him to be healthy, that's all. And by the way-- - Fair enough. - That's all. And Shane, let's get to your point before the show. You were talking about that you were happy to see the offense being able to be vertical, because a lot of these situations is just like run the football a ton, and throw a five yard out, but you saw passing down the field from the backups for the Bears. - Yeah, I think it was more for me, like less about what was happening, and more about where they were attacking the field. Like I was really, maybe Luke gets the PTSD a little bit, worried that they were just gonna come out through a quick screens and horizontal stuff and go super West Coast. And I think Waldron will like to do that a little bit, but I was happy to see a more downfield attack last night. - Torell's in Logan Square on Captain J. Hood. Good morning, T. - Hey, what's up guys? Just want to say first of all, I love both of you guys. - I appreciate you. - First of all, thank you. - Thank you. - But yeah, I wanted to see what you guys thought about this. I think it's kind of cool that for the first time, it's kind of like we have like a backup quarterback competition, and we're not like too frenzied about our starting Caleb, which we hope he's gonna be the best. - We have a backup. - We have a backup quarterback competition? - We do not. - I think after ripening, you know, ripped it a little bit last night. People are talking about that. - I don't think we-- - You know, I know it's a basic show. I just thought that it was like, if the culture's a little different now, that we're like not too focused on the starter, and I don't know if that makes sense to you guys, but yeah, it's kind of cool that we're like talking about the backup quarterback. At least we were yesterday with me and my friends, so I don't know. - Well, I don't think there's a competition, but he did play well. No doubt. - Yeah, Beijing's the two. This is not gonna be at the end of hard knocks. I don't know this Brett Ripon's looking good. ♪ Da da da da ♪ - Exactly. - It's not that. It's good for Brett Ripon to feel confident again. We heard the soundbite there in our previous segment cap, because it didn't go well from him in Green Bay. I don't care if it's against twos or threes at all. Brett Ripon looked good. And for Tyson and Beijing, I want to see more. There is no, here's the thing. We talk about Camp Peace. There is no quarterback controversy at all. - No. - It's pretty much solidified, and as Ryan Pulse told you and many others, it's gonna be hard to make this football team. - Yeah, and I said to you yesterday, "Huh, Dallas, are we paying DAC 65 million a year, "or whatever the number is, 70, 60, whatever it is?" Not sure. Are we getting an extension with CD? I'm not sure. Are we signing? Oh, what's the name of their star pass rusher? Why am I blanking on it? - Che, who's a star pass rusher? - Make a Parsons? - Make a Parsons. Are they paying him? Not sure. You go to Cincinnati, you go to this place, you go to that place. We've just got Camp Harmony. Let's keep it that way. - That's all right. - Camp Harmony. - It's good. - What's that? - Can we get a T-shirt? - I'm gonna call Joe at the break. I'll be a shirt. I'm starting to walk in the game last night. And I'm like, hmm, maybe there is a reason why they don't want to sign unique in Gakwe. Or they want to sign one of these one-year rental deals on a defensive end. Because Austin Booker really caught my eye last night. I mean, he was throwing guys left, right, and center. He's the one that forced the sack fumble. I just wanted your thoughts on his performance, really. Look, he is really quick. He comes off the edge. He's got to continue to just get developed. I got to give credit where credit's due. You know, I blast him when it's more than appropriate. Shay Norling was on the Booker thing. Norling liked him, you remember? - I do. - Norling's like, that kid is a player. Take a bow, Shay. Put the collar on hold. You deserve to take a bow. Did you not tell us that you liked Booker in the draft? - I told you I wanted him in the fourth round. I was pissed about the Tory Taylor pick because I wanted Austin Booker with that fourth round pick. I didn't think they'd get him in the fifth. They'd get him in the fifth, and I ended up getting my guy anyway. - Right, and we got the punter. - I watched that dude at Kansas. He was a player at Kansas. At the senior bowl, he was putting Jordan Morgan on the floor, that's the first round pick. A tackle for Green Bay. I really liked this guy, and so far a camp. All the reports have been, he's good. Looked good in the preseason game. That might be your left side edge rusher. - How? - Right side, whatever it is. - How does a kid go to a college that doesn't even have division one football? - All right. - Come that good. - I don't think you should make the Jayhawk upset now. Let's not do that. - Jayhawk's nose just started flaring. - What? What did he say? - So, just to be clear, Booker yesterday was able to shed a double team. He was able to bull rush his opposition into the quarterback. He also was able to, again, shed blockers to try to rush to the outside. He was really good. I have film here, Cap, if you'd like to see Booker isolated. Let's go. - And we talked about the weapons that he's going to have. I think if Caleb Williams can stay healthy, I do believe he'll throw for well over 4,000 yards, and he's gonna bring something to this team. - For show. - How about that? Well over 4,000 yards. - All right, let's start there, Cap. Shot or no, Shay, you said very disappointed with the Sports Illustrated 37 young 100 yard, 26 touchdown 12 pick projection. So shot or no shot for Cap to be not disappointed. Caleb has to throw at least 42.50. - It's a shot. - Wow. - It's a shot. We've got a vertical offense now. Hoodie's been begging for that since he and I got to know each other 20 some years ago. In the last four years that we've been together, he's been begging. Can we please stretch the field a little bit? And guess what? We've got the guy that can do it. If he stays healthy, he will go over 4,000 yards. And if he doesn't, I'll be disappointed. Sorry, that's my take, and it's my take. - I said 42.50. I wanna know if we're sticking the hard line there, Hood. - I just, I'm unbothered by all of this. Just completely unbothered by it. I mean, we never focus on the big picture. It's always the ancillary nonsense. The big picture is for the ball club to get better, for them to be able to get to the playoffs. It doesn't matter what the numbers are. What it matters is health. It also matters whether that the ball club's getting better. - Oh, wait a minute. If he throws for 3,200 yards, okay, if they go 15 and two and he throws for 3,200 yards, then some running back had an unbelievable year. If he plays 17 ball games, 16 ball games, he's gonna throw for 4,000 or more. And if he doesn't, it will be disappointing. - Okay. - How many quarterbacks do you think through from more than 4,000 yards last year? - 10. - Exactly 10. - Well, he should be one of them. Because all I've heard about since he won the Heisman is that kid's generational. I've watched a lot of tape on that kid. I've watched a lot of games. Maybe not as much total college football as you two guys, but I watched everything 'cause I knew that kid had a chance to be with us. That kid's a beast. And if he's everything that we've been sold with all these weapons, he better throw for 4,000 yards. - All right, big bold statement. If he throws for under 4,000 yards, he will flu should be fired. Shout out no shot. - What's the record? - Well, obviously, if he's under 4,000 yards, that's a non playoff team, right? - Not necessarily. - That's my point. It doesn't matter. - Right, but I'm saying to you, if he throws for 3,200, you're gonna be disappointed. We'll be like, that's it? - I will not be disappointed. Because this guy's got a really bright future with this team. Everyone's trying to put all the eggs in one basket in one season, and that's just nonsense. It is. Again, the focus is for the ball club to get better and for them to be a playoff team. Again, the big number that matters to me is the win column, the big W. - But for them to be a playoff team, in my opinion, he has to be on the field, and he will put up massive numbers. - Okay, okay, that's it. And actually, those massive numbers also don't necessarily equate to a playoff berth either. The defense could be awful. - Well, Justin Herbert. - And the defense could be awful. It could be really bad too. - No question. - I mean, that's why, to me, all of this, I'm not necessarily taking stride, 'cause I'm excited about the season, but I'm not gonna be like, when he's talking heads on television, doing pie-in-the-sky predictions, when we haven't seen Waldron work, we haven't seen Caleb work, we haven't seen a Dunesé work, we haven't seen how this offensive line works. Again, the time under tradition in the National Football League is to be able to have a rookie learn on the job incrementally week in and week out season in and season out. We can only mention on one hand, the special quarterbacks that stepped into this league and were fantastic. - Agreed, but the game's also played differently. - Doesn't matter. Yes, it's played differently, but it doesn't work for everybody. - More vertical. I mean, like one of my kids said to me, Troy Aikman's numbers, how did he get in a Hall of Fame? I'm like, because the game was played different. Go back, watch, that guy's a winner. Guy was a stud. - Absolutely. Nobody handed the ball off better than Troy Aikman. Here's Shane Newell and Shane. - Wow. - I just, I wanna stick with this for a second. How many quarterbacks cap all time? Rookie quarterbacks in NFL history have thrown for 4,000 yards. - Well, I know Andrew Luck did it. I know CJ Stroud did it. I would doubt that Peyton did it 'cause he went 2 and 14. I would doubt Aikman did it 'cause he went 2 and 14. - Herbert on that list? - Herbert absolutely did it. I'm gonna say five. - Five is the right number. The two you're missing are James Winston and Cam Newton. All of them in the last 10 seasons. - Yeah, 'cause the game is played differently. And they are going to go downtown and with Geno Smith throws for north of 4,000 with Shane Waldron, guess what? I want that from Kayla Williams. Sue me for having high standards. - We all want it. I'm just saying it would be exceptional. It's happened five times in 15 seasons. - Good. It's gonna happen sick. - I hope. - So, betting on draft kings or ESPN batter, wherever you get your feet wet, bet 'cause it's gonna happen. - Yeah, you're missing your own gimmick. Your own gimmick is chasing greatness. You're missing the chasing part. You're chasing greatness. Here's Shane Orland. - I'll always chase greatness. - No, no, I'm talking about Kayla Williams and the Bears. The gimmick in your sweatshirts are chasing greatness. - That's correct. - When you're chasing greatness, you're on the way. If you think greatness will happen in year one, take out the chasing and just have greatness T-shirts. Here's Shane Orland. - All right, bears, edge, rush, or oops, Tim Booker, just greatness. - Well, I'll sell the chasing now. - And then when he gets to 4,000, then they get these-- - Just greatness. - Right, right, right. - Bears, edge, rush, or oops, and Booker got some good reps last night, consistently winning off the edge, pressuring the pocket, granted Hall of Fame game. You gotta take everything with a grain of salt, but we've been hearing this out of camp. Booker is flashing a ton of potential. Fifth round draft pick, he looked good last night. Shot or no shot, the Bears found a legit edge rusher in the fifth round. That's a no shot. We're gonna find out, won't we? Because, again, based on what I saw yesterday, you know, there was a mixed bag. I think it was more positive than negatives on the isolation film that we saw on Booker and his snaps, but hopefully that'll be the case. And I like that the general manager, by the way, is gonna take a flyer and a couple of these guys, like he loves the offensive lineman for the Chicago Bears and Braxton Jones, the fifth round draft pick. Hey, man, all the glitters is not gold, but sometimes you take a look at a flyer in the fourth or fifth round pick, you think you do the job, it doesn't matter where he's drafted. The hope is that Booker could be that, but who knows? - If a rookie got 10 sacks, would you say they found their pass rusher, Shay? - If a rookie got 10 sacks? - Yes. - Yeah. - There was a guy named Mark Anderson here. - Oh, God. - He had 10 sacks as a rookie. Everyone went, okay, we're done with Alex Brown because this guy got 10 sacks as a rookie. What did he end up with this for his career, 12? - I love it. - So, Alex, I'm not, who knows? - Yeah, he was just not, yeah. - He was done, but in the first take society that we live in, is he the greatest pass rusher in Bears history? - The answer's not. - No, he didn't. - And no, no shot. We have found yet, Austin Booker has not played one snap in the National Football League. - 30 minutes ago, you told me to take a bow about Austin Booker. - Yeah, 'cause he looks good. I didn't tell you that they found their pass rusher. He certainly looks good, and I'm giving you credit. - But they found their pass rusher in Montez, Sweat. - Yes. - Really, the question is, Austin Booker is making the case. You don't have to go sign somebody. - No, you always want to have experience. - Yes. - If you can, if it's affordable, and if you can, you should go with the experience first. - If they called you and said, "Hey, give us a third round pick. "You can have Matthew Judon, 'cause we can't get him signed." - That's different than signing yet, he can gokway. - He can gokway's also a pretty good football player. - Yes. - That's a lot of really good seasons. Again, I gave you credit for Austin Booker, 'cause you were the guy before the draft said, "I want that guy." And they got him, and he looks like he could develop into something. To say they found their pass rusher now, today? No, I can't say that yet. - Let's see if he can beat out Dominique Robinson in the camp, who knows? That he might be a camp casualty. - Might be? Or maybe cut Noah's soul. Still been waiting. Maybe trade Noah for Pane. - Yeah, that'd be fine. And the Steve Baskerville, let me tell you something. This guy here, Steve Baskerville did a hell of a job on the weather here for many years. - And now, linebacker with the Bears. - How about that? - 47. - That's the untold story. The guy did the weather at CBS2 for like 35 years, and now he's playing the linebacker. - Pretty good, kid. - Good old kid. - Watch him, number 47. Here's Shane Orley. - All right, Amari Tumor was on-- - That'd be Amani. - Amani Tumor, sorry. Did I say Amari? - Yes. - Amani Tumor, Amari Cooper, Amani Tumor. God, now it's in my head. Amani Tumor talked about Caleb Williams and the comments Caleb Williams made to his team about cleaning up after themselves in the locker room. Don't put that work on the staff. You gotta take care of business. Amani Tumor didn't like this too much. Take a listen. - He's Russell Wilson 2.0. - Uh-oh. - This is not gonna go over well. If you came in the locker room, I've been in this locker room for eight years, like you said. And you're some rookie's gonna come in who hasn't played fun, snap. - Right. - Talking away, wearing the fingernail, polish. You know, now he's gonna come in here and tell me, who've been here, who've been through the struggle that I need to clean up? No, how about rookie, how about you clean up after me? - Right. - How about that? Don't give me this crap. I don't like it at all. I feel like rookies should earn their respect. - Sure. - Just because you got drafted number one doesn't mean nothing to me because I don't even know if you're good. Stop, stop. Just play the game. Prove to me that you're really here to be a star. Prove to me you're really trying to make this team better. Don't sit up here and talk about trash around the locker room. Come on, man, please. - Okay, or no shot. This is the dumbest reason yet to slander Caleb Williams. - That's a shot and you should get a money tumor on this show 'cause I'd like to tell him what an idiot he is. Like, why don't you pick up a phone, you're a former player and off the record to ask Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, Cole Comatt, ask any of these dudes. Hey, tell me about that 'cause his teammates, like Kevin Byer at a two time old pro, thought it was awesome the leadership that he showed and they loved it, loved it. And this guy's never met him, never talked to anyone on that team and he's a money tumor. He's an idiot. - That's peak FS1 right there, isn't it? - Oh my God. - Just firing away from the hip. He's just trying to solidify himself for the season tumor. That's why he said what he said. He's just piling on. Look, I know that for many years it's like, "Hey, rookies are supposed to be seen, not heard, all this stuff." But again, it's a different time. If he's one of the leaders of the team says, "Hey man, we got to have a standard in the locker room," that shows leadership. Whether it's a popular with his teammates or unpopular, he's showing leadership. He's not going to be here for a cup of coffee. And so if he rubs people the wrong way, that's fine. Keep in mind, you can work at a place for a long time and everyone's not going to like you. But the bottom line is that when we continue to hear from players off and on the record about Caleb Williams and his demeanor, bedside manner, the way he is, there's nothing wrong with what him saying, "Hey, let's have a standard here, keep it clean." So when are you like a pig pen tumor? Did you just leave towels around? Did you mishandle people when you played? Did you just say, "Hey, pick up my crap? I'm a Montezumara." - Yep. - Really? Were you that guy? - Please, can you book him, Shay? We don't do a lot of guessing. - I'm gonna work on him. - Get that, get that, get that guy on. - Yeah. - No. - He just made the list, him, John Hamm. - Okay. - Gruden, he made the list. Anybody else in that list? - There's more. - Me. - Nope. - All right, Shay. - I love you. - Dan Hayes, twins writer for The Athletic, reported a little pulling back of the curtain on the White Sox trade deadline, put out that the twins were willing to move their number one prospect, a 21 year old with some positional versatility, hitting 929 OPS in the minor leagues this year. They were willing to move him for Eric Fettie. White Sox reportedly never engaged in this conversation because they didn't want to trade Fettie in the division. This, if it's true and if the reports are accurate, would have been the only trade at the deadline involving a top 100 prospect. White Sox ended up settling for the three team deal with the Dodgers and the Cardinals, moving Fettie, fam and co-pack for a few prospects from the Dodgers. Shorter, no shot. If Chris Goetz was holding on to Fettie from Minnesota because he didn't want Fettie in the division, that's gonna be the worst move of his career. - Well, Bruce Levine, who I have great respect for, is pushing back saying that it is not true that you could have got a top 100 prospect, this kid from Minnesota, and so that was, it's a story that's not true. We'll find out, gotta do more research on it, but I would tell you this. If the Rhines Dorfs told our tourists, we want you to not trade Alex Caruso for two number ones or a top 10 number one. We don't want two number twos for Andre Drummond, 'cause we gotta try and make the playoffs when they had less than a 2% chance of being in the playoffs. Maybe they told us to guess, who knows the way those things run around there, right? - Yeah. - Like if Jerry or Michael are sticking to their beacon on trade talks, I mean, what the hell? - That wouldn't surprise me. - Me either. - Yeah, like so Shay, would it be the worst on Getz? Well, Getz is part of the organization, so I suppose what I would say that is, if we do a deeper dive, it could be more than just Chris Getz making that alleged move. - Well said. - It would be Jerry. - It's the whole organization. - Sure. - Somebody's gotta wear the blame, and I can't fire Jerry Rhines Dorfs, so. - Well, you can't put the blame on someone if it's not their call. What if he picks up the phone and goes, Jerry, I can get a top 100 prospect for Eric Faddy from the Twins. I don't wanna trade him in the division. - Who cares? He's Eric Faddy. - I fire Jerry in 2010, personally. - Well, if we could, like, but if what you guys are saying is true, then we should all just give up until you Jerry Rhines Dorfs moves on from owning this team and whatever capacity that entails. That if what you're saying is the case, then we might as well just give up. - I can't just, well, I mean, but this is the embodiment of a meddlesome owner or someone that sticks his beak in there. - It is, Cap. - You're right. - Like, it just is. I mean, we go back to LaRusa. Again, it worked out in year one, but again, on the surface, it was not the right call. The general manager should have the right to generally manage. - Exactly right. And then judge him accordingly so. And one thing I've asked, Theo, I've asked you, I heard Sylvia say yesterday, should the Cubs spend more money? - Yeah. - Sure. - They've got the ability, he's right. They have the, do they spend a lot and they got very little return? They're a dead last, fair. They spent 230 million. Fair to say that they spent enough to be better. Could they spend more? Absolutely. If Juan Soto's out there and says, I'm interested, there should be no price they won't pay. They're the Chicago freaking Cubs. But one thing Theo and Jetta both told me is, if they go in and say, hey, we're trading, who's the best player on the team? We're trading Justin Steele for the rights to Jonathan Hood. He, Ricketts is not gonna tell them they can't do it. - Right. - He just gets out of the, okay, tell me why. Just explain why you're doing that. Here's what I, okay. He said, 'cause I can't judge you if I'm telling you what to do. - That's fair. - Which is fair. So good and bad there. - More baseball with Jesse Rogers coming your way at 835. All right, what do you have? First playoff team from last year that will miss the playoffs this year. Respect to Mike Tomlin, the Pittsburgh Steelers. - Always count the brother out. - Odds makers have them overwhelmingly favored to miss the playoffs minus 250. - It's amazing. - Look, Cody, you remember last year when I said I didn't think the Vikings would go back to the playoffs, the biggest reason why was because they lived in one score games and won them at an impossible rate. Last year, Steelers eight and two in one score games. Can't be any opinion on me saying the Steelers will not make the playoffs? - Yeah, I completely agree with you. I do not think they'll make the playoffs. - Again, not a surprise. - Two African-American, two of which. - Don't believe they can coexist and don't believe that the guy at the top can get the job done. - Well, I just think there's too tough a division. - Is that not America in 2024? - Well, good job. - Are they better in Baltimore? - The answer's no. - Are they better in Cincinnati? - The answer's no. - Are they better than Cleveland? - Now again, the lotion king at quarterback better be able to stay healthy and stay on the field. - But that roster, that roster freaking loaded. Top five roster in the NFL. - Well, all I can tell you is- - Dead last Steelers. - Yup, and in the playoffs. - No chance. - Okay. - Me, listen, I might as well be Mike Tomler on here. - You guys count me out every morning, but I'm still here, standing. - Still standing. - And winning, doing well, but winning. - Hmm. Winning. - Here's Shay Norley. - The second team that will miss the playoffs made it last year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Back-to-back division champs in the NFC South at a combined record over two seasons of wait for it, 17 and 17. That one, you two straight division titles. Dead on 500. - Hmm. - Good luck doing that again, especially with the resurgent Atlanta that's better than you in every facet on the field. You have a new offensive coordinator. You have a rookie center snapping the ball to Baker Mayfield. The Bucks will not be back. - Well, we spoke so highly of Baker. Did we not? - We did. - We spoke highly of Baker, turning it around. - Solid football player. - Yeah, I'm right there with you. I don't think Tampa makes the playoffs. - All right, that's fair. 'Cause someone's gotta get there. - Letting Atlanta does. - Sure. All right, what's next? - Here's where Kathy's gonna get mad at me. And this one's a little controversial potentially. Dallas Cowboys are not making the playoffs this year. - Is CD Land playing? - I don't know. - Yes, he is. - I'm sure he's going to, but there's just so much going on between having to pay Parsons, having to pay CD, having to pay Dak, Mike McCarthy's in a lame duck year. You're bringing in a new defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn left. Nobody has won that division in consecutive seasons since 2004. The Eagles, could they be disaster again? Maybe, but I think they're gonna be pretty good. And the NFC is better. The NFC North has improved. It's gonna be tougher to get the wild card spot. I'm not picking Dallas to make it. Dallas has to make the playoffs. Come on. Come on. - I mean, they get digs back the corner. That's a huge, huge addition coming back from an ACL. - One of the most overrated players on the league. - He's still their best cover corner. - He's not a very good cover corner. He's their best ball hawk. - Okay, he's still a good football player. - He's just, he's just poking you in the ribs. - Don't take the cheese cap, stand, 10 toes down. Tell 'em. Tell 'em. You're a guy in the league says, what about the Dallas Cowboys? What does he say? You're scouting the league. What does he say about the Cowboys? - They get a loaded roster. - There you go. Tell 'em. - I'm gonna say Dallas makes the playoffs. - Yeah. - I'm not telling you to win a super ball. I didn't even make a bet on 'em. - Not yet. - But no, Dallas makes the playoffs. Giants make the playoffs, okay? They're not going anywhere. - Nope. - Philly's in, Washington out. - Right. - K, bear in. Lion in. - Packer. - Probably in. - In. Falcons in. - 49 are in. - 49 are in. And Dallas finds their way in there too. - Probably right. - I'm gonna say Dallas is in the playoffs, Shay. - Here's Shay Norlin. - Final team I'm predicting will miss the playoffs is the LA Rams. Last season, they were the single healthiest team in football. Not gonna happen twice in a row. - And probably right. - When one of the players with injury history is your quarterback, I'm not predicting two consecutive healthy seasons for Matthew Stafford. He was very good last season, but their offensive line still left some things to be desired for me. It hasn't been fully short up. You've lost Aaron Donald, he retired. - So, Shay, who gets the why next to their team at the end of the season? Who is that? Is that the Seahawks? - Is that wild card or division title, the why? - The why is the clenched wild card. - So if you're asking me to pick the seven teams that go in, I think it's Detroit, Chicago, Green Bay, San Francisco, Philadelphia, 49ers, you said, right? 49ers. - Yeah. - And Seattle. - And Seattle. - Okay. - So two teams out of the West, one of them is Seattle. So Seattle replaces the Rams in that spot for you. - I like McDonald a lot. It gets tough when you're picking that seventh team 'cause it really could be anybody. - Y'all will be there. - Absolutely, love the doobies. - And you're starting to see, what? - That was a good one. - You're starting to see a lot of guys go down with injury. We just heard DeAndre Hopkins yesterday, went down for Tennessee. Who else the other one, Houston just lost one of their guys to a PED violation. Like there's a lot going on around the league with injury and suspension. - Okay. - I can agree with some of those, but I'm always gonna hold out hope that Tomlin finds a way and Justin feels will lead them to the playoffs. That's what's gonna happen, pal. Justin turns the clock back. - Actually, there is no clock to turn back. (laughing) - What is he turning back? - Actually, I'll take that back to the wrong phrase. - He's going back to college? - I'll take that fine. I'll put a fine in the fine bucket. - Does field team eligibility remaining? - That was the wrong phrase. I used the wrong phrase there. That coffee is swimming this morning in me. - 12 playoff teams in college, now we can make it. - Yeah, that was the wrong thing to say. He will be better under Tomlin because Tomlin will have him under fire. How about that? - We said the same thing about Mitch and I told you the other day, Tomlin is gonna walk into his GM's office next spring and go, "Okay, that's it. "We're done with rejects from Chicago. "That's it. "Tribisky, fields, I've had enough." - And that's our look around the NFL. - Oh, I do, I teased a fifth team that I'm not predicting, but I think you can build a case for, I wanna make sure I get it in. It's the Green Bay Packers. - Oh. - Is Jordan love the guy who was terrible in the first half for the guy who was the best quarterback in football in the second half? Or is he somewhere in the middle? If he's somewhere in the middle, a lot's gotta go right. I still think they downgraded, going from Aaron Jones to Josh Jacobs. Defensively, they should be better, but we have to see it on the field. And the division is a beast. - Well, brother, let me tell you something. If you had one of the playoffs, the bear can be able to take care of that on January 5th. Maybe that's the game, Cap, in which the bear not got the Packers. Can you imagine that? - Man, if you don't think the Packers make the playoffs, maybe the bears have something to say about it at the end of the season. - Yeah, I would like to put in my request right now with the great Keith Williams upstairs. May I please have tickets, 'cause I know we have some, to the bear at Packer game next January at Lambo. - Might wanna send an email. - I'd rather use a 50,000-watt blowtorch. And I need passes to the Tundra Trio, so I can get my pre-game swerve on. Let's go, 'cause we're going to the playoffs. - And that's our look around the NFL. - What if it's about to be different around here? - On ESPN 1000 and the ESPN Chicago app. We'll talk baseball with Jesse Rogers, and that comes your way next, right here on the home of the Bears and the White Sox, ESPN 1000.
