(crowd cheering) It's a Bears Victory Friday, on the cap and Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000, and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app, with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We've got Shane, we've got Jay Moore, we've got you. We're glad you're with us here on this Bears Victory Friday, with open phone lines for you, 3-1-2, 3-3-2 ESPN, 3-3-2-3-7-7-6, you heard the voice of Jeff Joniak. You heard the voice of Tom Thayer, the voices of the Chicago Bears right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN 1000. Cap is just good to see football back on our screens and on our air here on ESPN Chicago, with the Bears coming through on a rain-soaked shortened game as the Bears go on to victory. Good to see it back on our TV. I enjoyed watching it, I taped it, and I had to coach the captains, our team up in Niles, the Glenview team. And so I taped it, I said, "Please, nobody tell me anything, "I'm watching it as live." I got through it, didn't look at my phone. I'd get in the house, I'd turn it on, and I sat there, I watched that 'til, God, I don't know, 10-30, at least, went through all of it, and then it got rain canceled at the end, but watching that two-hour infomercial for the Chicago Bears and watching the interview with Kevin Warren and Ryan Polls, and here in Joe Bucko, well, the job this guy's done, he's pointing at Polls, remaking this roster, and you can see Ryan, it's all excited. By the way, he's got skinny, damn. And Kevin Warren talking about, "Look, our focus is the museum campus, "it's the most beautiful piece of real estate "anywhere in the country." But we also own Arlington Heights, you can tell, he's kinda torn, what do I do here? - He's vacillating back and forth because he's political just like the city is. It was, what we talked about, Kat, he knows. - Correct. - And you and I both know, Arlington Heights is the spot, but he's just trying to appease Mayor Johnson and just letting the game. Governor Pritzker know, I know what's going on here, but I'm mentioning you guys, and we're going back and forth. - But to watch that two plus hour infomercial, where the everything they said was, the bears are going in the right direction. And I hear Troy Aikman, and we'll play some of Troy's comments in a little bit about what he thinks Caleb's gonna do this year. I'm like, "Feed it into my veins, let's go." And then we walk off the Cardinals on the other TV, I'm like, "Oh my God, let's go!" Good night, a good, rare night for Chicago sports yesterday. Let's just start here. I'm glad that the ones were not playing yesterday. Nice turf, Canton, does that come in a mens? My God, we complained for years about the turf and soldier field because of the turf monsters. You see what happened yesterday, Kat? Not saying that it would have led to an injury, but the idea that you want to keep your players safe, I'm glad that the trip ups that we saw on both sides with the Texas and the Bears, happened with the twos and not like a DJ Moore or Caleb Williams. Not a great surface yesterday. You're correct, and there was a throw. I thought Brett Ripon really accorded himself well, albeit against guys who probably won't be in the league, but he threw the football very well. Colin Johnson, oh my God, that guy's a beast. He'll be on the football team. But Brett Ripon tried to step into a throw to his left down the field, and you saw his foot just slide out from under him, and it was still a pretty good throw. And I'm thinking, boy, if that's Caleb and you twist an ankle, God forbid worse, we'd be furious, like, what are you guys doing? Putting them out in this meaningless game. Yet there were people calling in all day yesterday. I listened to the station, all day long. I can't believe we're not playing him. That field? No. Hey, Troy Aikman said it himself. He would have liked to see Caleb Williams out there, but again, there's four preseason games. It's four. The old schoolers, and I thought about this after our show yesterday, and I was like, why didn't I say this to Cap during the show? You ever do that? Everyone puts the steering wheel like, why did I bring that point up? - As soon as the elevator, we walk out together for people that don't know every day. Hoodie and I stand at the, we've only been together for four and a half hours, and we stand at the elevator with you blocking the door 'cause I get off at two, you get off at five, and we talk, we keep going. And I get my car, I'm like, some of I should have told him that. - Yeah. - And more often than not, I will call you. - I should have said to you on the air, we have to understand the Tom Thares, the Waddles, the Yerks, the Troy Aikman's, they played four plus preseason games. - Correct. - They are even more than that. Wasn't more than that five? - It might have been. - I mean, so I understand their perspective. - They also had two days. - Yes, I understand their perspective. Their perspective is you play every preseason game. You gotta get yourself ready, get yourself in shape, that kind of thing. But again, sports evolves, football evolves. And because it's a rare situation now that the Bears have four, there's three more for them that wants to play in to be able to get comfortable. So the idea that Caleb Williams and the one should have played yesterday, my whole thought is, well, it's four. So the next game against Buffalo on the road, unfortunately, that's where Caleb Williams is gonna get some reps, and then at home. And then against Kansas City at Arrowhead. - So, I mean, a lot of this is the old school players that doused with the neural fingers. Those guys should play two of days, sometimes three of days. Or sweating their balls off or getting in shape. How come, well, because that's not what football is today. That's why. - So in 1979, when I was playing in Division III, we had three of days. - I get it. - Three of days, two of them were padded. That was Division III. You imagine what they were doing at Alabama and Texas A&M and Michigan and Ohio State. Beaten the heck out of each other. All day, all night, get up and do it again. I was in a golf event. Jim Bo Covert is sitting there and he says to Olin, Roberto Garza. Hey, how's Club Lovey going? You guys having a nice vacation? What do you mean? One practice in the morning 'cause it's gonna get too hot. He goes, this could have us in pads for six weeks. - Exactly right. - Totally different, but they evolve, as you said. - And on the other side of it, Shay, is this, is that we as fans are so anxious and so excited to see what it looks like. Doesn't matter if it's at Lake Forest. Doesn't matter if it's the first preseason game. You're just excited to see it. I get that. But patience is a virtue. We're gonna see it in week two of the preseason. - And I honestly hoodie hope after watching last night that even some of the older guys, the old school guys who think you should be out there getting ready, have a come to Jesus moment. We can all make peace on this that Matt Eberfloos made the right decision. None of the starters needed to be on that slip inside of a football field last night. - No, none of 'em. - None of 'em. - We got guys getting carted off. We got guys falling down, going to the locker room with lower body injuries. Everybody sliding all over the place. If it happens to a backup, it's a sad story for the backup. - If you put your starter on the field and God forbid Caleb Williams slips and tears a ligament in his knee, your season's over. That field was atrocious. There's no way a starter should have stepped foot on that. - Yeah, well, I'll say this that I'm all for the three quarter preseason game. If this can be something that's instituted, I'm fine with it. I did not miss the fourth quarter. I didn't feel like I got chipped. - Oh, I did that. - So I texted my brother 'cause I had to ask, I said, "Hey, I just got home. I'm putting the game on now, watching it as live." Do not, I'm gonna call you about something. Do not tell me one thing about the game. Okay. And then I'm watching the half time a little bit. I start to fast forward and get to the second half. Oh, we took the lead. The game is under weather delay. And then I looked at my phone and it popped up a, my burner account. - Sure. - That I only have just to follow bigs. Pops up bigs. Bears game canceled. - Oh, I thought I'm bad. - Yes, absolutely right. So if they wanna do this, by the way, with the three quarter preseason game, I'm totally fine with it. Let's just do that. Brett Ripin, as Kat mentioned, played very well. Three touchdowns, 11 for 15, good for 166 yards. And that's the film, Brett. You wanna be able to go someplace else? Show 'em that film. Here you go. Here's my reel to reel. Here you go. I feel, oh, pretty good, kid. Wow, able to connect on some really good passes. Brett Ripin, with a Hall of Fame game performance. - Any chance that they keep, I don't mean three on the active, but where he'd be the emergency third quarterback? I mean, in a league where you got 17 games and you got quarterbacks getting pounded on all the time, any chance that Brett Ripin is the third, or they keep the reed kit from Western Kentucky? 'Cause Tyson Beijing's locked in at two. So, any chance? We will, you know, that's a camp battle. Find out on Hard Knocks. That's it. It's finding a lot of Tyler Scott stuff on Hard Knocks. Here's Brett Ripin. You know, this one meant a lot for me tonight. I think, you know, sitting on a year of my last start in Green Bay didn't go the way I wanted to do. You know, I've had a bad taste of my mouth the entire off season and, you know, took the approach that, you know, I didn't really know how this year was gonna look. You know, even if I was gonna have an opportunity to compete for anything, you know, but just kept working hard every single day and said, you know, just gonna do what I can, know how I play my basketball and try to get back to that. And so, you know, when you put in the work and it shows, it feels good. - I know the feeling for some, they're rolling their eyes, listening to that sound bite, as well as just the preseason, just the first game. Imagine if Brett Ripin was overwhelmed and looked terrible. - Oh God, see, that's the perspective you have. You'd rather for him to feel comfortable in the pocket. I don't care if it's against guys, it's gonna be at the plant in a few weeks. It doesn't matter. He looked good out there, good for him, good for Tyson Vagin out there. Vagin, I look forward to see more of Vagin. I don't think I got enough of him. I like to see a little bit more, because I know that he can nickel and dime it better than anybody. - He did, but last year they were showing he was two and two as it started, I'm like, you know what? Undrafted kid, they just dropped him in when Justin got injured. Bam, he looked fine, not a franchise quarterback, by any means at this point, but it was super cool just to see that infomercial for the Bears. - All right, we'll take your phone calls coming up, Bears fans on his Bears Victory Friday, 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N, 3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our phone number. On the home of the Bears, ESPN 1000, 312-332-3776 is our phone number. As we were the phone lines, Cap, one of the major storylines for the first game for the preseason was what special teams will look at, like with the kickoffs. And it was just an odd formation to see the Bears and the Texans lined up. And then the person that's supposed to catch the ball doesn't have a lot of space, Cap. Here's what I don't understand about this. The NFL is always preaching safety and all we gotta make sure it's safe. Can I tell you something? I don't know how that's safer when you think about it. That formation to me, how much time does the guy that's gonna catch the ball really have to survey the scene? I think it's pretty much, I think it's more sudden with this than it was with the old formation. - So I felt like I was watching an XFL game with that formation for the kick. I think, again, I said to you after the game, I call it you, we talked for a while about it. Tyler Scott got rocked, I mean, stopped in his tracks. So I don't see how there's any more safety. Just give him the ball at the 25 yard line and let's go. Just get rid of it. Just started the 25 yard, no kick off. - Right, and I said last night to you, and I said it on my recap, just I'm willing to, you know, I don't know exactly how I feel I need to watch more of it. But I just, I don't need it. It's just a weird gimmick. First of all, you want these special teams guys that are jacked up on whatever to stay in still. - Right. - It's a special teams guy. First of all, if you're on special teams, you're nuts. - Well, then they're certified. - I'm watching the game and the referee, you couldn't hear him 'cause they were doing an interview, which I get that's part of the Hall of Fame thing. And then they came back and they went to the official in the booth. He said, yeah, we had a legal procedure on Chicago because you can't move. - Yes. - And you had a couple guys like so anxious, your feet were moving. - Exactly, like in place, but they're moving. - You know what that is, Cap? You're on special teams. You're just like, your hair's on fire. - Because you're wild. - Because you want to hit someone but you also know someone's going to hit you? - Yes. So the idea that you're supposed to be standing there like a statue like, all right, we're going to wait for the ball to be kicked. - Yeah. - I have the patience of Joe, I'll wait, Cap. There is, you're on special teams. - Your head's on a special man. - You're yelling, you're like, whoa, let's go! Go get this guy, right? - Yeah, I don't need this. - I don't think I need it. - Cap, I, what, again? Goodell's always preaching safety. - That looks safe to you? - No, Tyler Scott also got his head knocked off. - But there's nothing on a football field that's safe. Just that's waddle in York. Everywhere they turn, they were getting popped. - You've been Devin Hester, the Hall of Famer was like, eh, not so sure about this. - With Devin Hester, one of the greatest returnmen of all time, I gotta get your take on this new kickoff rule. What you've seen so far, what do you think? - I'm watching it, man. I'm surprised that we not seeing no big runs. You know, that's shocking, you know what I mean? But hey, this is the first season, the first game. So I'm figuring a lot of course you're gonna evaluate this game and try to figure out what they can do to utilize to get some more big plays in there. But right now, it's kinda shaky right now, but who knows the first game? We'll see. - A little shaky right now. - We'll see. - That means I don't know about this. - You saw it, it's kinda cool to see the big green box on the screen, the big green. That's where the kick returner is supposed to be. But those guys who just lined up in a formation and just suppose to stand still and you kick the ball, they wanna get more excitement out of that. But I don't see a path for a return, do you? 'Cause that's what they want, yards and excitement. - You'd have to break through the first wave and then you could be gone. Like Devin, if he broke through the first wave, I just, I don't need it. - Just thought I was asking, I think it's weird. - All right, three, one, two, three, two, three, seven, six is our phone number, your thoughts about yesterday's game with the Bears winning 21-17, did you watch? Did you listen right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN, Chicago? Check in with us as we go to Schomburg. Here's Anthony with us on Cap and Jay Hood. Anthony, good morning. - Morning, guys. I think we've seen a glimpse of the Shane Waldron offense. I think it is gonna be a past heavy attack like it was in Seattle. With that said, I know that Sylvia was ripping on Cap for saying he'd be mad if Caleb Williams can reach 4,000 yards. And I gotta say, I agree with you, Cap, because if you look at Geno Smith numbers, in 2022, 4,200 yards, 30 touchdowns, 20, 23, 30, 600 yards, 20 touchdowns. I think Caleb Williams is gonna be a beast and he was bringing up all these quarterbacks. Their rookie year and how good they did. And there were so few of them that did good. And the ones that did good, he doesn't think that Williams is gonna be as good as them. But look at the weapons he has. - Who doesn't think it'd be as good? Who, Sylvia? - Yeah, Sylvia. - Well, all I know is a triangement last night said, we'll play the audio, but triangement said, he believes he'll easily pass 4,000 yards. I personally will be disappointed if he's healthy. Again, health plays into everything. If he plays 16 or 17 games and he doesn't throw over 4,000 yards, I will be very disappointed. - I agree with you. Sylvia's not that sobering, but I would be. - All right, Anthony. - I agree. - All right, we appreciate the telephone call. My feeling on it is it doesn't matter to me. Here's what matters to me, that the bears get better. And if it's 3,700 yards, if it's 4,000 yards, as long as the young man is upright and getting better, as long as the offensive percolate, I don't care what the numbers are. I don't care if he just throws five-yard passes, as long as the bears are better as a franchise. Because here's the thing. I will never be caught in the trick bag because there's pie in the sky, thoughts about the Chicago Bears, if they don't get into the Super Bowl or win the NFC or win the NFC North, there's this, all these lofty expectations for Caleb Williams in year number one. I have perspective, and the perspective is, there's very few rookie quarterbacks who are able to get to the kind of numbers that people think that he can get to. I think eventually he can get there. If he does, it's great. But if he doesn't, I'm not disappointed. That's the whole thing. When you have people looking at Caleb Williams who say, well, he'll be able to surpass CJ Stroud, he'll be just as good as Andrew Luck, or just as good, can we just let the young man cook? Can we do that first? - I agree. - Can we just let him cook? Can we let the offense cook? Can we see balance on both sides of the football offense and defense? It's not an argument for me. You're right, Sylvie's right. I just want him to be healthy, that's all. - And by the way, that's all. And Shane, let's get to your point before the show. You were talking about that you were happy to see the offense being able to be vertical. Because a lot of these situations is just like run the football a ton, and throw a five-yard out. But you saw passing down the field from the backups for the Bears. - Yeah, I think it was more for me, like less about what was happening and more about where they were attacking the field. Like I was really, maybe Luke gets the PTSD a little bit worried that they were just gonna come out through a quick screens and horizontal stuff and go super West Coast. And I think Waldron will like to do that a little bit, but I was happy to see a more downfield attack last night. - Terrell's in Logan Square on Captain J. Hood. Good morning, T. - Hey, what's up guys? Just wanna say first of all, I love both of you guys. First time we met you. - I appreciate you. - Thank you. - But yeah, I wanted to see what you guys thought about this. I think it's kind of cool that for the first time, it's kind of like we have like a backup quarterback competition and we're not like too frenzied about our starter and Caleb, which we hope he's gonna be the best one. - We have a backup. - We have a backup quarterback competition? - We do not. - I think after ripening, you know, ripped it a little bit last night. People are talking about that. - I don't think we do. - You know, I know it's a Vegas show. I just thought that it was like, if the culture's a little different now, that we're like not too focused on the starter. And I don't know if that makes sense to you guys, but yeah, it's kind of cool that we're like talking about the backup quarterback. At least we were yesterday with me and my friends. So I don't know. - I don't think there's a competition, but he did play well, no doubt. - Yeah, Beijing's the two. This is not gonna be at the end of Hard Knocks. I don't know this Brett Ripon's looking good. ♪ Da da da da ♪ - Exactly. - It's not that. It's good for Brett Ripon to feel confident again. We heard the soundbite there in our previous segment cap because it didn't go well from him in Green Bay. I don't care if his against twos or threes at all. Brett Ripon looked good. And for Tyson and Beijing, I want to see more. There is no, here's the thing. We talk about Camp Peace. There is no quarterback controversy at all. - No. - It's pretty much solidified. And as Ryan Pulse told you and many others, it's gonna be hard to make this football team. - Yeah, and I said to you yesterday, hmm, Dallas, are we paying Dak 65 million a year? Whatever the number is 70, 60, whatever it is. Not sure. Are we getting an extension with CD? I'm not sure. Are we signing? Oh, what's the name of their star pass rusher? Why am I blanking on it? - Che, who's a star pass rusher? - Make a partisan? - Make a partisan. Are they paying him? Not sure. You go to Cincinnati, you go to this place, you go to that place. We've just got Camp Harmony. Let's keep it that way. - That's all right. - Yeah, Camp Harmony. - What's that? - Can we get a T-shirt? - I'm gonna call Joe at the break. I'll be a shirt. Camp Harmony with a little bear head on it. - Yeah. - Maybe like a summer camp logo, like the gates when you walk to the overnight camp as a kid. - Perfect. - Welcome to Camp Harmony. - That's so funny. - Tommy Sweeney, your cut. Muhammad is in Pailos Hills. And with us here on Kappa Jayhood, Muhammad, good morning. - Hey, how's it going, guys? - What's up? - I appreciate you guys taking my call. I'm sorry I wasn't in the game last night. And I'm like, hmm, maybe there is a reason why they don't wanna sign unique in God way. Or they wanna sign one of these one year rental deals on a defensive end because Austin Booker really caught my eye last night. I mean, he was throwing guys left, right, and center. He's the one that forced the sack fumble. I just wanted your thoughts on his performance really. - Look, he is really quick. He comes off the edge. He's gotta continue to just get developed. I gotta give credit where credits do. You know I blast him when it's more than appropriate. Shay Norling was on the Booker thing. Norling liked him, you remember? - I do. - Norling's like, that kid is a player. Take a bow, Shay. Put the collar on hold. You deserve to take a bow. - Did you not tell us that you liked Booker in the draft? - I told you I wanted him in the fourth round. I was pissed about the Tory Taylor pick because I wanted Austin Booker with that fourth round pick. I didn't think they'd get him in the fifth. They'd get him in the fifth and I ended up getting my guy anyway. - Right, and we got the punter. - I watched that dude at Kansas. He was a player at Kansas. At the senior bowl, he was putting Jordan Morgan on the floor. That's the first round pick, a tackle for Green Bay. - I really liked this guy and so far camp, all the reports have been, he's good. Looked good in the preseason game. That might be your left side edge rusher. - How? - Right side, whatever it is. - How does a kid go to a college that doesn't even have division one football? - All right. - Come that good. - I don't think you should make the Jayhawk upset now. Let's not do that. - Jayhawk's nose just started flaring. - What? What did he say? - So, just to be clear, Booker yesterday was able to shed a double team. He was able to bull rush his opposition into the quarterback. He also was able to, again, shed blockers to try to rush to the outside. He was really good. I have film here, Cap, if you'd like to see Booker isolated. Have it right here in front of me. - Love it. - So, let me see. - 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N-3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our telephone number, Brooklyn, New York. Listing on the ESPN Chicago App, here's Derek on Cap and Jayhawk. Derek, good morning. - Yeah, hey, good morning Cap, what are you all doing? What's up, Dave? - I'm chilling, man. You know, watched the game last night, was happy, watching the two, the back up, go against the back up. So, I was really impressed with the... Well, I received, what's your name, Collins? - Collins Johnson. - Collins Johnson, eh? - Yeah, Collins Johnson looked pretty. You know, it looked like he could solidify our spot on the other roster. Now, Roshan Johnson looked pretty good too. Ann Herbert looked it all right. So, I don't know what's gonna be the situation with him. If we're gonna wind up letting him go, he's gonna go to another team. But, hey, like you say, Cap, you know, you're auditioning, you know, for other teams if you don't make this team, you know what I mean? But, like, it's good to have football back, you know, what's happy to see what was going on. And I'm just glad where the bears are going in the right direction as far as, you know, learning the offense. And, you know, just getting basically, so hopefully getting these back up spots solidify. And to piggyback off what you said earlier, I had called yesterday and said the same thing about, happy that they're not playing Caleb and other starters, because, like I said, he could have tripped over somebody and tweaked the ankle or tweaked the knee. And they just think, uh, it didn't happen. And the one thing, Cap, did you get the tweet from, um, from Homeboy George in Glenview with a picture? - No. - He said, he tweeted it to you. I'm not on Twitter, I'm not on X. So, he texted me, he said, oh, I tweeted it to Cap. So, I don't know if he got it or not. - I didn't, but I'll go back through and see what I did. You don't know his X handle, do you? - No, because, like I said, I'm not on Twitter. I'm on a Facebook Instagram, you know what I mean? - All right, uh, if George is listening, tweet it at me again, but I'll look. - All right, Derek, we appreciate your telephone call. There is something we'll get to that, and also hear from Matti Replus, the head coach for the Bears, on the Cap and Jay Hood Morning Show. - Here's to Dave's headline, headline with Cap and Jay Hood. It was a good night for Chicago sports last night. White Sox didn't lose. Cubs walked off the Cardinals out of Mike Tocman hit. Big night for Dansby Swatson. Cubby's win. They beat their all-star closer. 5-4, the final at Wrigley 2 teams back at it. Today is Eric Fettie, pitches for St. Louis. And the Bears, in a rain-shortened affair, beat the Texans in the Hall of Fame game. Brett Rippin was the star offensively. I was the receiver Colin Johnson. Fortunately, nobody got injured. And if you bet on the Bears, your ticket was voided, because NFL games have to go a minimum of 55 minutes to cash. So all bets, null and void. Jay Moore. (upbeat music) - You're listening to Cap and Jay Hood. Follow the show on Instagram @thecatman and @igjhood. This is ESPN Chicago. Chicago's home for sports. (upbeat music) - It's a Cap and Jay Hood morning show on the ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. It's a Bears Victory Friday, and we're taking your phone calls at 3-1-2-3-2-3-7-7-6. The Bears, in a rain-shortened game, win is good to see football back on our screens. And of course, right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN Chicago. Colin Johnson, we talked about earlier, Cap. The two touchdowns, three receptions, good for 50-60 yards. Again, when I was watching him score those touchdowns, I'm sure the ones like DJ Moore and Roma Dune Zay, even Cole Comette probably was like, yup, those are mine. He's scoring them now, but those are mine. When the bell rings, those are my touchdowns. - So get out of my way. - Tommy Sweeney, nice job, but you're not going to be making an impact. Now, the one thing I do want to hear us talk about before we hear from Matt Iberfluce is the running back situation. So, Cap, yesterday, Colille Herbert, four carries, good for 35 yards. Rochon Johnson got the start. Six carries, good for 24 yards. And I think that the conventional wisdom is that Rochon Johnson will be behind DeAndre Swift. I think they'll, you know, they'll share the carries. But it makes me wonder, what is Herbert's role? You don't want to have redundancy at the position where you have three. So I think Colille Herbert, was that him, is that an opportunity to showcase what he could do elsewhere? Is he going to be with the team? 'Cause I think that Rochon Johnson is the firm too, is he not? - It certainly looks like way to me. First of all, he's the best of the three running backs in competition to start as a pass blocker. That was his M.O. when he came out of Texas where he backed up Bijon Robinson, and he was an elite pass blocking running back. - Colille Herbert, not so much. DeAndre Swift did not grade out as well. But when I asked Ryan Polls a couple of months ago about DeAndre, they feel better about him in that role than maybe the metrics had showed. Their evaluation is that guy's a major upgrade. And that's why they signed him. So we'll see where that goes. But I thought Johnson and Herbert both ran a ball really hard. - Let's, we also, again, this is just the first game, but we've got to see throughout the preseason, what happens with the offensive line. Is Ryan Bates the firm one? Will there be a competition between Bates and Coleman Shelton? That's something else to keep our eyes on too. That's important, man. When the captains of the offense, you just want to make sure that the center is comfortable with the fresh quarterback Caleb Williams and vice versa. That's something to look out for as well. - Yeah, and I still wonder if there's an upgrade still out there for the offensive line, does somebody get cut from another camp that has, look, if you're getting released, unless it's a contract issue, you probably have some kind of a wort about your game. Let's just be fair here. 'Cause teams are starved for offensive lineman. The only guy that's out there is Connor Williams, who tore his ACL last December from the Dolphins. But it doesn't seem like anybody's pouncing on him right now. So maybe he's not healthy. - We keep our eyes on a few of these things because I believe when the general manager says it's going to be difficult, when Ryan Pulse says, difficult to make this team, he's talking about, I'm sure the backups and exactly who's going to be able to add depth to this roster. Matt Iberflus is the head coach for the Chicago Bears. He gave his thoughts about the Bears victory against Houston. - You know, the one thing in this game, I know it sounds, you know, obviously basic, but is to have the substitutions right. Make sure that we have, you know, the guys out there are supposed to be out there who we're supposed to see, the number of plays that we want to see guys play in. We don't want to put a certain player in harm's way for too long, so we do a really good job with that communicating that. And what I noticed was the offensive staff being the first time together, the communication. I thought that was outstanding the whole night. The way they operated when they were not on the field with the players, you know, and the way they operated in the halftime was really good. And then during the game when they were on the field, and they did a great job communicating, working together. And some of those guys have worked together before, but it's a new group. And I thought they did a really good job with that. - Yes, and it's good to hear Caleb Williams getting given the opening speech, getting everyone ready to go for this game against Houston. - Caleb Williams with the USC and Oklahoma on bars down still, fight on. - Yeah. - And the sign-in bonus is 25.5. (crowd cheering) - So that's how he got everybody going. There you go, introduce himself and ready to go. - We'll see them hard knocks. - Yeah, they made the rookies get up and say where they're from and then how much was your signing bonus? And they then cut to Tyson Beigeant when he heard 25.5 million. - Yes. - He went into convulsions. (crowd laughing) He's like, oh my God. It was hilarious. - No, that clip went viral. And so we'll be able to see hard knocks next week. Caleb Williams having to speak like everybody else and just kind of threw his bonus out there too. Hello. - Correct. - We lose camp. And again, this starts with youth and having veterans in there. And I know that there's been a big spotlight on the Chicago Bears. And I guess the beginning of it, as you mentioned, an infomercial for the Chicago Bears from Joe Buck in Trojekman, before. A lot of fun, Cap. Just to know that the Bears have a lot of things going for them. It's not, here's one story and then the rest of it's bad. It's a lot of interesting, compelling stories and it all manifests itself on hard knocks. We'll see it all. - We will. - We talked about it. - We will. And Jay Moore's working on some great audio from Buck and Aikman. Just the way they were so optimistic about where the Bears are headed, what this offense could be, just everything. We haven't seen the Bears in this type of light. It's always been, oh, I hope we could be good. I hope Mitch can be decent. I hope this can, it's not how it's being portrayed now. It's super cool. - It was, like the start of the broadcast, some jumped out to me. They show the graphic of all the offensive acquisitions, Keenan Allen, Roma Dunezay, DeAndre Swift, Caleb Williams. And they're just kind of talking about it and Buck did his thing. He always does with the up and coming team. It was Ryan Polls, year three, what he's building. It's looking good. And it was, we have a real NFL team now, like this is the team in town. - Say that again. - That, this is a real NFL team. - Yes, we look like we know what we're doing. - The national broadcast throws up the graphic, all the weapons that you've gotten. And the national broadcasters are talking about how good everything looks and it's all going in the right direction. That's the kind of storyline that develops around teams that become good, capital G good. - Completely agree. - Even if we haven't seen anything yet, it just, it feels good to have the narrative be a little different. - Completely agree. And now they got to go out and win football games, you know? They got to shut the guys like Eddie on the north side up who's gonna be negative and he won't be any good. - Yeah, take that, Eddie. - Yeah, sorry. - They've got to go out and win football games. And when they're down and not playing well, what are the good teams do? Find a freaking way. - Yeah, Eddie can keep his beak out of the Bears conversation this year. Oh, he totally fine with that. - There you go. - Keep his beak out of it because there's nothing good about the team for him, nothing. Or, or, or Bears fans that think that this is all smoke and mirrors, that this is a mirage. - Correct. - Because they've never seen it. - Well, I mean, just like, again, with perspective, look at even five years ago and look at now. You can't say it's the same. Now, again, you hope that the results are different in which you are moving in the right direction and they already are from one year to the other. You hope they could take another step or two. That's what it comes down to. So he can keep his beak out of it. - There you go. - Speaking of Iberflus, here's Joey G. - Oh, boy, what's up, JG? - Good morning, gentlemen. How are you? - Good. - Awesome, man. - Hey, Joe. It looks like the beard made his first good decision not starting any starters when they feel the way it was. Two, I kind of saw a little steadiness on the offensive line with the backups. - Mm-hmm. - Protection. Three, if this chance of kidding on this team, has something wrong. These are studs, six, five. It's got hands and sides of basketball. The kids gonna be able to catch a lot of passes if Caleb gets in any trouble. But I understand we have four other great receivers on the team too. - We've never seen this kind of depth, Joey. - Infrastructure. - Infrastructure, here we go. How about that, Lee? - You're going after Lee Allen now. Is that what you're doing? - How about that, Lee Allen? - Wait a minute. Lee Allen has him 17 and 0 and winning the next nine Super Bowls. - He must be with that even. - Probably so. - Yeah. - From the North side. Listen, have a great weekend, Cam. - You come in. Dad? - Dinner's at seven on Sunday. - Oh, later today, this Sunday. All right. - Well, I got a new smoker. I gotta learn how to use it. - Well, oh, gnocchi. Maybe you're gonna have some gnocchi? - No, no, no, no, new smoker. - Oh, you're gonna smoke some brisket. - Okay. - Yeah, we're gonna smoke some brisket. - All right, have fun. - I would love that. Appreciate the telephone call, Joey. Coming up at Hall of Famer with something big to say about the state of the Chicago Bears. You hear that coming up next? Captain Jay Hood on the home of the Bears, ESPN 1000. (upbeat music) - Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitch at ESPN 1000 Chicago. Captain Jay Hood are back on Chicago's home for sports. And then we've got White Sox baseball, correct? Now would you add the update? - We have White Sox at twins. A lot of speculation. There was one, I don't know the young man, but his name is Jesse Somethin. He was on MLB network television and said he does not believe that one Pedro Grafalle with 80 L's after it. Do you see that new shirt that's out? - I did. - G-R-I-F-O-L-L-L-L-L-L-L's all over the shirt. Pedro Grafalle doesn't make it to Monday is what he said. - Okay, come on Jesse. - So that's a bad take. - We'll have that coming up 6.30 pregame right here on the home of the White Sox, ESPN 1000. A Hall of Famer said something about Caleb Williams, quarterback for the Chicago Bears. It's from the broadcast yesterday with Buck and Troy Ekman. Listen. - And we talked about the weapons that he's going to have. I think if Caleb Williams can stay healthy, I do believe he'll throw for well over 4,000 yards and he's gonna bring something to this team. - Some of the things from Joe Buck on the history for the Bears and Caleb Williams. - For the Bears, they're tired of hearing about the quarterback numbers and rookie quarterbacks and searching for that franchise quarterback and not having a 4,000 yard passer. And, you know, it's, there's a lot of history that's on Caleb Williams, but it seems like if there's somebody that's able to handle it in a big city, that's the young man that can do it. - There you go. - Peter and all into the heights on the cap and Jhood morning show. Hey Pete. - Hey, good morning, gentlemen. Thanks for having me. Hey, I wanted to get your guys' thoughts on the new kickoff rule. I noticed that when these guys are coming off blocks, I think it's a little bit easier to come off blocks because there's no cushion on the return game. And I feel like there might be more injuries, even though they're trying to prevent them. Just wanted to hear what you guys had to say about that once they start figuring out how to, you know, attack this return team and creating picks and all that fun stuff and getting down there and popping somebody. - What did you think of it when you first saw it? Peter, you were watching the game, right? - I mean, you know, it's a new, it's new, it's different. I think we're all used to the past 30, 50 years of return game here. I don't know, man. I think that there's gonna be some injuries. I think that it's gonna backfire, but that's just me. You know, I've seen a couple guys slip on the returns. I mean, that's probably different, but once these guys get downfield, they're breaking, they're coming off blocks quick. You know, it's gonna be hard to block at the line, even though they're dropping back about five yards before they make contact. But, you know, you got second team in there or special teams guys trying to block these guys that are coming down the field and there's not a lot of room to actually pick your target. So, I don't know. I want to hear what you guys got to say about it. - I, again, I said last night after the game, so I'll stick with that until I get to see more. My first blushes, I didn't like it, but let's let it play out a little bit and see what happens. But I was not through, this looks goofy to me, but if you said, hey, we've seen enough, we're going to cap the ball at the 25 yard line. That's it. I'd be fine with that, too. - So, Shay, it's time for you to come up with an opinion. I know you did not have an opinion before the show. How many more times do you need to see this? To me, we just talked the other day about the on-side kick, right? And we talked about how, oh man, we got to get rid of that because that could cause injury. Okay, all I know is that with this formation, if you are someone that's going to catch that ball, it's going to come to you quickly, the opposition on special teams. I don't know, they're trying to prevent injuries. I don't know how this prevents injuries. You want to have action with the kickoff, great. But how much action are you getting? - Well, so I don't know that they're making this move purely in terms of preventing injuries. I think there's an expectation there will be more on returns than there have been in the last five years because there haven't been returns the last five years. And they kind of want the action back. I think this is just the compromise of this is more dangerous than no returns, but it's not as dangerous as what we were doing when you had full speed momentum from all the way up the field. They were gonna have to see a play out. I don't know what the injury levels were in the UFL where they were using this. I know the return level was huge, so we will certainly see a lot of kick returns. But who am I to say if it's safer or not? And frankly, nothing the NFL does even when they say it's for player safety is actually for player safety. - Well, I'll tell you who I am. I'm Jonathan Hood and I'm telling you that this whole thing about player safety is nonsense because it's football, it's a physical sport. That's who I am. I'll tell you that Roger Goodell tried to legislate something that has never been the case. And that is a football game that's 100% safe. It's not. - Well, you're never gonna have anything that's 100% safe. But we also have to be fair here when you can't hit quarterbacks below the knees. There are certain things that do without a doubt protect the most important asset on the field. Period. - Yes. - Now, some of it goes way over the line. When you see a guy tackle a quarterback, he violently took him to the ground. He's supposed to do, man. That's a strong man he's trying to bring down. When Yorko got in a backfield and tried to tackle someone, he just wanted to get him on the ground. - Yep. - It wasn't there to kill somebody. He was there to, hey man, I gotta get you on the ground. That's what I get paid to do. So some of it goes over the top, but there are some things, you know, defenseless receiver getting leveled head-to-head contact. That stuff's gotta be out of the game. - Sure. - But I'm not sure about this kick thing. It's too gimmicky. - Put it in the end zone. Just start at the 20 or 25, let's go. - That's it. - Jake, because the special returns are fuel and farm between cap. You don't get there. That's why Esther's in the Hall of Fame. You're special. - Special. - 25 yard line would be great. Just put it right there. - All right, we've got shot or no shot. That's in two minutes on Chicago's home for sports.
