It's wrapping up here at Gillette Stadium with a little bit of try to kick them all through the uprights here. Do or do not, there is no try Yoda would say, because that was a bit of an issue for Chad Rylan last year. Very much so. And of course, you got to snap it, you got to spot it, you got to hold it right. There's all the mechanics of the operation of kicking the football. Does Joey Sly have a chance or do you think he's just here to put a little pressure and get to know him a little bit? Yes. I think if Rylan loses the job, which I think that's what would have to take place, yeah, it would probably be a situation where they'd be scanning the other camps to see who the best kicker that lost another job is. And I think that guy would probably be oversliding. That would be, that would be the way I would expect them to handle it as well. You're always on the, always on the hunt, always on the look. So a couple of field goals here to wrap up practice, but Andy Hart, what stood out to you today at practice. So certainly first and foremost that Matthew Judon was out here in shoulder pads, but grudgingly or not, not a full participant, I would say some of the team 11 on 11 stuff, it was one rep and then out. And I'm going to go sit on a gatorade box and I'm going to re tie my shoes, very active with his teammates and pass rush drills, showing the defensive lineman some moves, some technical things, showing the tackles, maybe how to counter those and how to block some of those, being a good teammate. So that certainly stood out. Matthew Judon is at least partially invested in the process of today's fully padded practice. Yeah, partially invested. Or is this a part of the manipulation that someone does of curring favor? We did see Matt Judon early in camp running out to get the fans on his side. Yeah. Apparently he's not worried so much about fan reaction anymore. Guys that is that too nefarious to think that it is shifted to now him a B. I'm a visibly show. I'm going to be the best teammate that I can and those guys are going to love me and guys like the Von Godshaw will say I deserves this contract. Yeah. And he said that yesterday and we'll probably get somebody today. Maybe Jacobi Brissette will support him and his mentions with the media. I still say all of this is much ado about nothing. It goes back to money. It's going to be what he wants, what they're willing to pay and how they come together on those two numbers beyond Judon and the contract situation. Left tackle situation is still not what I'm looking for. Verdarian Lowe with the first group at left tackle again second straight day after Caden Wallace had been there for a stretch. Okay. Cora for had been there for a stretch. So let me just ask you is our he was a young player. He was only in year two when they got him here. But last year is there a chance the Verdarian lo might be getting better and become a starting grade player. I always leave the door open for growth and development and a chance, especially when you are desperate and don't have a better option and might have to give him that shot. So yeah, I leave that there. That's going to get really interesting and it's going to get interesting when we get into the joint practices, obviously, because those are going to be very competitive. The Eagles are pretty good defense. See what they do. You know, match up with some other bodies other than well, we don't, you know, Judon is only a half participant. He'd be your best pass rusher. Correct. Your next best defensive front player is Barmore. He's not out here. Yeah, that's so like the challenges that that makeshift offensive line is going to face haven't been that strong early in camp. So yeah, that the line is still a massive concern. I will say I thought Drake may had a nice practice. Fine plus. I have dubbed it. He's trending positive this week. Fine plus. Yes. Fine plus. The Ghost of Mac Jones by Michael Holly, that's an upgrade for him. You know, you're looking for maybe a little more emotion and leadership and competitive zest or whatever. Yeah, I'd like to know that he wants the job and isn't just accepting the plan and I'm not saying he's going to be insubordinate or anything like that. Just show me it's in there. Show me that. I've heard a lot from a lot of people that I really trust that within Drake may, there's the dog, the competitiveness, all of that, I haven't seen it yet. And to me, when people have that, it comes out organically a lot of the time, right? Every once in a while, it might come out bad. It does need to be managed, but like I it does kind of worry me a little bit that I don't know if he's looking at this as this is my job to win versus it's my job to wait for. I don't want to go down this road of too many comparisons, but I will say I always believed and remember early on, Mac Jones was punching himself in the thigh after a bad throw self flagellation type crap. I thought he was wound too tight, right? And I think as his career played out, you found he was wound too tight. He broke. You know, the the situation, the circumstances, the surroundings broken that help broke him, but he broke. I think maybe there's a little bit more of an even keeled personality, a long term personality to your new quarterback, your new leader, Drake May. So I like what I've seen. DiMario Douglas was an interesting guy today in that he came out with a white number three jersey on he did. And then at some point re redawn to the number three in red, which is the non-contact, but he was running all over the field catching passes. I think there's an evolution of help there hand injury apparently he's dealing with. Sean Wade was in a red non-contact jersey and was also partaking in a lot of the seven on seven in the passing stuff. I think both of those guys are probably relatively close to not needing the red jerseys moving forward. But DiMario Douglas, I mentioned it earlier, he had a crossing route for a touchdown that he then dunked through the goal post. So the hand that was dunking must have felt okay and the legs feel okay. What they officially list him at? I bet you he is five eight. I'm going to guess that. That's what you'll go with on the that would be my guess. What are they? What do they have that number at? Let's see here. DiMario Douglas, they five eight nailed it. What do I cover this team for? Five eight, one ninety two that can all it's I have a hard time telling between the six in the eight when it's that small that is an eight that's an eight. That's bull crap might be but whatever. Hey, we all lie. It happens. But the fact that the fact that he can get up and dunk that thing, it really just shows the the massive amounts of athleticism. I'm with you. May was better today. We have to be prepared for it's just going to be up and down. That's what's going to be with Drake May and there are days where he's going to look unbelievable and then there are going to be days where you say this guy was the number three pick in the draft for God's sakes. This was the guy that everyone has talked about for as much as I love to see a little oomph in the little leadership and things like that. This is going to be a slow process because you're trying to do this within the process of installing an offense for the first time and you know, there's a lot of people look at it and say, well, you just make everything new and you throw the guy in there. That's irresponsible to the organization and in a way, it'd be irresponsible to throw Drake May in there into a situation like that. If it happens organically, God forbid someone gets dinged or gets hurt. Yep. Okay. Then you're in there because there's the need and then he's the next best guy. So you turn around and you play him, but this is going to be a real evolutionary process because this group is still trying to figure out who are the best 11 to put on the field and where. Yeah. There's a lot of questions around him and I think it's also important to remember the two guys that a lot of people have chosen as comps for Drake May, Josh Allen and Justin Herbert did not start to open their careers. They started because Peterman stunk and was immediately over his head and it's like, well, if we're going to have to be over his head, but Josh Allen out there and let him start chipping away. He went in and started week. He went in and week one started and week two and never looked back and Justin Herbert and a bad doctor stabbed Tyrod Taylor and Justin Herbert's out there never looked back. So just because Jacobi Brissette starts week one doesn't mean, oh my God, Drake May can't be good or he's behind or any of that, those two guys, which most people lust after their physical tools, Josh Allen and Justin Herbert, those two guys didn't win the starting job out of training camp for their team. So keep that in mind as we're analyzing, over analyzing, micro analyzing, everything Drake May does. I thought Polk caught the ball relatively well today. There was one in completion that there were a couple of drops in that red area. Period stuff happens. It's a work in progress for everybody, you know, they had one to the right and that one. And you just don't know because it's funny. Ten years ago, you see a drop or you see a ball fall in complete or you see a miscommunication and it's like, well, that receiver better get up to speed because that wasn't on Brady. Brady don't make mistakes at this point in his career, right? You knew the scheme and you knew the quarterback were beyond questioning at that point. So it was obviously the receiver, the new tight end, the rookie receiver. Now you look at it and you have to say, was Javan Baker, where are we supposed to be? You know, because I did see Brissette actually after an incompletion on a corner that hit the ground that he was wide open, should have been an easy completion, jog over and Brissette, we've talked about it, has had good leadership, fluffing guys up, getting energy up. Well, he realizes I think Andy is a veteran that this offense has no life right now and he's got to be the one to try to bring a little bit of oomph to whatever it is that they're trying to do out there. Well, he probably has, maybe Van Pelt too, but the greatest breadth of experience and going through things with young players and teams that aren't good and teams are trying to get good and teams that aren't sure, like he's been around in Cleveland in Washington and India. Right. Felt some different types of camps, types of teams, you know, is there confidence? Do I need to fluff, you know, is there too much confidence? Maybe I need to reign a guy in. I think on this practice field, Jacoby Brissette's pretty high on the list of guys that have that knowledge and that base and that feel for teammates and teams. So, but no, like, I thought Polk actually continues to struggle in punt return. Yeah. Muffs a ball or two every day. Yeah. I don't think he's a punter. I was just going to say I feel like I'm not sure he's quick enough. Well, but the other thing too is is that if you want him to develop into a number one type guy. Now, again, I'm not comparing him to Jamar Chase, but you understand the whole, if he's your number one, do you want to risk putting him back there? I understand the got to find a way to get the ball to playmaker's hands. I get that. But if he's not going to be secure and catching it, it's a little like Drake may taking snaps under center. If you can't trust that part of it, you just can't put them in there right now. Absolutely. Flipping over to the defensive side of the ball, just because in part, it sparked my eye that Jabril Peppers is talking to the media right now. Jabril Peppers was in uniform back on the field. He's been dealing with, I think, a little leg injury for a couple of days. So he's healthy. He was back out there. The safety position, what I really want to touch on, a lot of reps for Jonathan Jones. Yeah. Part of the field. Yeah. You're seeing Devin McCordy 2.0 here. It looks like. Yep. And I don't know whether it's out of necessity for the team because we've talked about it. They haven't been since McCordy retired. They haven't had a guy that was like a free safety type. They have all these bigger box hybrid linebacker, you know, even mappu who's not practicing is a bigger guy. He's not a developmental player. You know what that's, you know, what that screams to me is they got to put somebody back there. They can trust quarterback the back end and that's Jonathan Jones. Yeah. And that is without a doubt. And maybe at this point, what is he, 10 years into his career, 9 years into his career. Maybe they're like, you know what, he's either turned a corner or he's about to turn a corner age wise, speed wise. This might help him too. This might extend his career if he, you know, becomes a free safety shows he can do that job and it fills a need for us in the back end that I know a lot of people have talked about. That's something to keep an eye on out there as camp goes on and as preseason action continues. Yeah. I thought both quarterbacks are pretty good today. Brissette did a, did a nice job. It gets, you know, two days. I think we can say that May has stacked two together here, you know, still waiting. Say two plus. Yeah. Still waiting for the wide receiver room to really start to assert themselves a little bit. Yeah. Let's play that game right now. I'm going to say to you and pivot on the where do you see Juju Smith Schuster fitting in with this team? Excuse me. Juju Smith Schuster. He's a veteran player with which I know, with this team right here, I don't know. He would not be on my team. But how do you think they will keep him on this team? Because I think they could have moved on from him just like June on, but they ain't yet. No, because I still think he has some value and that position is so unsettled, not just in the youth movement at that position, but you know, Taekwon Thornton could get hurt against the Panthers. And now you're like, Oh, we're dropping already. You already have a red jersey for tomorrow, Douglas, make sure he gets healthy coming out of that. Where is Kendrick born? When does he come off PUP? When, you know, is he going to come off in camp or is that going to go through the season for a while? I know borns been zipping around here a little bit, but man, could they use his juice right now just to get this team going a little bit and on and off the field, the juice. But I also think he'd be their best receiver potentially. So you have KJ Osborne, who I don't think has flashed a ton. He ain't going to be here. I wouldn't rule it out. Really? If, to me, if it's between Osborne and Juju, I'm keeping Osborne because I know Juju is limited physically. He can tell me he's 100% and he wasn't last year. Isn't he? We talked about Mike Trout earlier. Right. I think Juju is permanently hindered by that knee, bone on bone, whatever you want to call it. What I was going to say, so I would say right now, based on camp, Tyquan Thornton has been my best receiver. Yep. DiMario Douglas is coming on strong. So those are my top two Baker and Polker making it. They're in the top four. Right. That's four. I mean, they're on no doubt. So that's four right there. Now we got to start talking about Juju and KJ Osborne. Here's a question. Here's a question. How big's the room now? Now that you've got this new kickoff rule and now you're even mentioned Raker. Yeah. Now that you've got different roster. Yes. Juju is gone. Peace, Juju. As long as everybody stays healthy. If those players are all in the mix, then Juju is gone. Let's circle back around where we started at the beginning. It was, Hey, Matt, Judon, Jabriel Peppers calls Matt, Judon a good guy and says, quote, We all have our days, end quote, when asked about the Ed Drushers conduct on Monday. Okay. Interesting that that's a veteran sort of acknowledging that he had a moment. Yeah. Yeah. But I think that's a veteran who when he f'd up last year and told Saquon Barkley, you're lucky we asked. That's why you beat us. Well, no, we do. Yeah. No, but later he said, you know, I should have realized Mike's might have been on. I shouldn't have said he's a stand up guy, Jabriel Peppers. Oh, I agree. I agree. No, I don't think he's perfect. I don't think he thinks everybody else should be perfect. No, I that's that transitional feel it out that you like to talk about with Mayo. I think that, you know, there's a, there's a an ideal and then there's a reality and very rarely are any of us or any teams in the, that ideal perfect Matthew Slater. I'm never ever going to have to question what Matthew Slater does, right? You're lucky if you have one of those on a 53 man roster, everybody else, you might have to clean up a little brush fire or a little spill where they say something, do something right, but a mature professional says I screwed up. My bad.
Andy Hart and Andy Gresh break down everything you need to know from Day 8 of Patriots Training Camp, including Drake Maye and Matthew Judon bouncing back, JuJu Smith-Schuster’s future with the team, the emergence of another young wide receiver, and more.
