Montana's largest energy utility company says it's planning on getting bigger. Northwestern Energy announced Tuesday it intends to buy Energy West Montana, a methane gas utility based in Great Falls. Provides gas power to 33,000 customers across Great Falls, Cup Bank, Cascade and West Yellowstone. Northwestern has agreed to purchase the smaller company for $39 million, pending approval from the state's Public Service Commission. With the PSC's approval, the acquisition will likely go through early next year. This is one of several big announcements to come from Northwestern Energy this week. The utility also announced Tuesday would expand its ownership of the coal fire power plant in coal strip. Northwestern will take over Washington Utility Company Puget Sound Energy's share of the plant for no cost.
