Jason sat down with Helen Bratton of Disaddicted to discuss how she turned the hardships of a traumatic childhood, alcoholism, and a stroke into her passion as an addiction recovery coach.

Helen says IT IS TRUE LIFE CAN SUCK! This is my calling, the journey has been challenging, but it has been worth it. In the summer of 2014 in the hills outside Rome, Helen's life was turned upside down, shaken not stirred! She had a near-death stroke at 36 and had to rebuild her life as a disabled woman. She lost her marriage but thanks to a revelation in the hospital she knew no matter what she was alive for a reason. An active addict who further escalated, her drug of choice being alcohol, she could have let the depression which pre-existed worsened. She asked herself will my alcoholism kill me or change my life?

She chose recovery from this insidious disease, that was her DECISION to get well and live. Helen initially got sober through a 12-step program but felt similar to her stroke, leading her to unravel her trauma and addiction. Helen worked with a great Recovery Coach who took her recovery to another level. She could choose a limited life or live a life helping others with a great meaning.

She loved it so much that she went on to become a recovery coach. She guides others to embrace their authentic selves.  Helen says she owes a lot to her addiction as recovering from it has gone on to improve and develop her life as a whole. She also says her stroke was a blessing too.

This is Helen Bratton in her own words, on Knockin’ Doorz Down.
