[MUSIC PLAYING] Good morning, and welcome in to the Captain Jay good morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. How about that, Cap? Well, David Kaplan shot up the hood with you. Now time for Shot of No Shot, and then we turn over now to Shay Norling. Shay? Good morning, boys. On a Monday, how are we feeling? We're awesome, man. Let's go. Ready for your main Monday. Ah, Shay, come on, Drew, he's a state of mind, kid. It's clearing up already. It's lightened up. The rain stopped. Come on. The glass is half full, kid. Don't sweat small things that you can't control. Is there a mirror in front of you while you say that, or? Here's Shay Norling. I'm the one guy that doesn't sweat small things. You know that. Yeah, that's a fact. We go through a health crisis. You learn real quick. The small stuff, don't freakin' matter. And that's one to grow on. But, hey, did we or did we not do five consecutive days of Kaplan missing his luggage? Well, it was a radio bit, you goof. It wasn't on the air when you were cursing out that poor customer service agent. Oh, I had my wife's anniversary president there, but it wasn't like the end of the world for me. Come on, you're better than that. Let's go get to work. It's your job. Let's go. Damn. [LAUGHS] All right. Well, Matt Everfluce has talked about Caleb's playtime in the preseason being related to the health of the offensive line, which is currently a mass unit. Three of five starters out at practice yesterday, including Darnell Wright, who did not practice. Kevin Jenkins, who left practice with an injury. Nate Davis had a ramp-up day practice, not in full. He was on the exercise bike, working some stuff out for a little while. If the Bears don't have a healthy offensive line, shot or no shot, Caleb Williams should not play against Buffalo. That's a shot. I cannot put him out there if James Carville is the guy trying to protect his backside. I mean, what does she say? It's not James. What is his name? Jerome. Jerome Carvin. Jerome Carvin. Like, there are guys I have never heard of that were in the lineup yesterday. If they can't protect the franchise quarterback, then you don't play him in a preseason game. I hope they can get these guys back out there, because he needs the work, Caleb. You mean the Cajun guy that worked in the Clinton administration? He's on the offensive line. That's Carville. This is Carvin. C-A-R-V-I-N. Jerome Carvin. I don't know who the guy is. I've never heard of the guy. But he was starting on the offensive line at practice yesterday. If that's the case, three guys are down, then I'm not putting Caleb behind him. But let's make that determination as the week goes on. We're there tomorrow and Wednesday. You and I. You know, Shay, I'll answer the question in this way. So say, for instance, the offensive line is not intact for the entire time of the preseason. Does that mean that Caleb never gets a snap in preseason? I mean, ultimately, you're going to go through trials and tribulations in which he will not have a fully healthy offensive line. If you are missing two parts or three parts of the offensive line, that means that Caleb doesn't get any snaps. He's got to be able to perform in some way when there is issues with the team. A wide receiver could be down, a tight end could be down. And this is where the rubber meets the road when it comes to decisions like this. At some point, Caleb Williams has to play. We look forward to seeing him playing against Buffalo. Again, if it's not now, then when? He's always going to go through some issues where he doesn't have his team fully intact. So when will that be, will be Tennessee? Is that the right time? So you would put him out against Buffalo if you're missing it. I get your point. At some point, he's going to have to deal with adversity. But adversity is not the preseason in week two of the preseason. If I have three starters that are missing, let's see. Well, here, Eber Flus speak tomorrow. Let's see what he says. That's the way I would answer it. I would ask, because you know how this works, Cap. I mean, your trailer is trying to rev up and get healthy for Tennessee for the first game of the season. These games don't mean anything as much as it is. You just get reps and getting football sheep. Correct. And football rhythm. That's correct. So I think that's the question I would have. It's a no shot that he should play against Buffalo if he's missing players. But again, with this happens at home in a third game or against Kansas City in the fourth game. So, and here's the thing. We've been there before, Shay, when you have a rookie or you have a guy that's supposed to be a quarterback and go, no, he doesn't play. We don't want to get him hurt. And then he looks flat as a pancake in that first game of the season. You don't want that. So I think we had to look at this. Yeah, I just think it depends on how much you think you can work on the things he needs to work on in practice and in the joint practices with other teams. And if you feel like he needs a certain number of snaps in actual game action in the preseason, like a lot of people in our Twitch and YouTube chat saying this feels like playing scared. I think resting him against Buffalo is more playing smart because the game doesn't mean anything and you don't have the bad bodies to protect him. The last thing you need in a meaningless preseason game is somebody flying off the edge, trying to get a job on Buffalo's defense and knocking Caleb Williams out. Then you're in trouble. See, the acement thought was for him to be able to get the calls, hear how the calls work, the cadence works, and then from the hand the ball off, just so he can feel comfortable in the offense. I think that some of us that watch these games believe that the offense is supposed to light it on fire even in preseason. That's not necessarily what it's about. It's about just trying to understand the rhythm. Keep in mind, Caleb Williams is the typical college football quarterback that we've seen, Shay, in which he wasn't calling, plays in the huddle, looked over at the placards, or just kind of just went, you know, as the evidence flow of the offense went. So I think that that part of it's important for him to have a voice in the offense. You don't want to have that in your first game, and ah, 40 blue time out. Well, that's wrong. You didn't give the right cadence. They couldn't hear you. It's older field. You got to be louder. Like, you want to get those kinks out if you can in the preseason. I agree. - More macro with the Bears offensive line health and three of the five starters already being this banged up, and it's not even preseason game two yet. Short of Caleb Williams himself getting hurt. The Bears offensive line being this injured already is basically the worst case scenario at Bears Camp. I don't know, Sean. - What's the case scenario? I mean, you don't want it right to have health, right? - Yeah, and now, I mean, a catastrophic injury becomes your worst case scenario, but yeah, all these other different things. Yes, it's not a good situation, especially when you're trying to build something. It's not like Tom Brady's back there. I've seen this already. I will be good. No, yeah, it's not good. - So no, it's not good now. My hope is that it gets better at the end of the preseason. And C-Shay, this is why I balk at the conversation about numbers and what Caleb Williams and the offense can do because again, you have to understand what football is. No matter how dynamic you believe that Caleb Williams and his offense can be, there's going to be issues like we're talking about right now, the offensive line. Is it, first of all, is it productive? Secondly, is it healthy? Then from there, it's a rookie working with another rookie in Adunze. He's got, Alan, he has got DJ Moore as a couple of veterans that he could work with, but it's about Williams understanding the offense, getting the ball down the field, the whole thing with the offensive coordinator. All of it has to work, and it doesn't work sonically. It takes time. And hopefully, it'll be quicker than normal. It worked for Houston. I don't know if it works for the Bears. We have to find out, have no idea. But keep in mind, there's always going to be issues, Cap, like what we're talking about now, that Caleb Williams has to overcome, whether it's Waldron, whether it's Ira Flus, whether it's the offensive line, whatever. Right. You just want those to be in season, not pre-season. Shay. All right, Jalen Johnson, over the weekend, reacted to not being named to the NFL's player-voted top 100. There ain't no way. I don't know how you make Pro Bowl All Pro and they're not a top 100 goddess. I mean, I could have been 101, I guess. But Aaron Rodgers didn't even play in the season. He was voted. So, I mean, everybody made mistakes. It ain't just the media that I do to the players. Clearly, if they voted for this, they made some mistakes. But it is what it is. I mean, any day I know the truth, and it's OK. I got some more for them. This stuff like that, though, like, drive you. Maybe not drive you, but does it just kind of feed you? 100% is disrespectful. It is disrespectful. Yeah, no, it's disrespectful. Because I know I go out there and in line up. And I know receivers go out there and can't say that. I'm not one of the best people to play. They play it again. So, I mean, just whatever it is, it happened. I mean, it doesn't-- doing it wouldn't have just moved me to where I'd feel like I'm complacent or anything. But just to see it, I mean, ain't no way. Honey, guys better. Ain't no way. And especially guys who didn't play, who were hurt, played hot. Ain't no way. I'm sorry, excuse my lights. Ain't no way. Ain't no way. I was a bit confused that Jaylen was left off, especially when you look at some of the other corners that made the bottom end of this list. Guys like Greek Wolin in Seattle, who were terrible last year, got onto the top 100. But Jaylen Johnson doesn't. I wonder if the impact is because he played on a bad team. So my question, shot or no shot. If Jaylen Johnson had played for a different team, he would have made the list. Well, I like a winning team, right, Shay? Yeah, if he played for the Seahawks, let's say. That's a shot. A winning team. Because he can't just be any. And the Bears are the one of the Dregs of the League. Have he played for Miami? He probably makes it. He plays for the Chiefs. He makes it. He plays for the Rams. He makes it. But he does not make it because the Bears have been so bad. But that guy's legit. Every right to be pissed. Does he see how this works, though? You would think the NFL can get through that clutter. Cap, you would think, OK, yes, they lost 13, 14 games in a row. Whatever it was for the Bears, that you could still look at the talent, say, well, I know they're bad, but that guy's good. The NFL players, you couldn't even get through that clutter. Bears are bad. Bears suck. So yeah, he's part of that. Well, no, he actually is a really good player. But see, you can blame the Bears for that. Don't blame Jaylen, blame the Bears. But if he has a really, really good season and the team goes to the playoffs, he'll be a lot to be high in that top 100, upper 50. You know what's interesting, Cap? Every player has some kind of motivation, right? Everyone has motivation-- family, friends, disrespect. They all have something. Some players feel disrespected because they're matenrating. Oh, there's no way my matenrating is going to be this. You know what? I'm going to work harder, so my maten rating will be better. Same thing here with this list. This arbitrary list, ass. During your peers and think you're a top 100 player, if that motivates you, and Johnson would be the best corner of the league, go do it. Have at it. Whatever it is, a hell of a football player. Everyone has their own different motivation. His motivation is that he was not named top 100. OK. Have at it. Yeah. Shay. Now, speaking of this top 100 list, number one, the best player in the NFL by the player's vote was Tyree Kill. Now, Tyree Kill's awesome. I've long said on this show and elsewhere that he is a surefire Hall of Famer an all-time great wide receiver. I've called him the best receiver in the league. I do kind of believe that. I think Justin Jefferson's given him a run, but it's 1A and 1B. He's got over 10,000 yards for his career before age 30, 76 touchdowns, three first team all pros. He's a stud. Led the league in receiving and receiving touchdowns last year, but shot or no shot. Tyree Kill is the best player in the NFL. That's a no shot for me. Yeah, that's a no shot for me either. Now, if Aaron Donald was still in the league, I think he gets the nod, but he retired. But yeah, Tyree's an amazing football player. Would I have a number one no shot? No, it starts with Patrick Mahomes for me. Since we're so quarterback centric in the NFL, I remember a time cap as NFL fans that we were into like defensive players and wide receivers and corners. And I think, tell me if I'm wrong. Maybe your conversations are different growing up. Didn't we talk about the stars, no matter the position in the NFL? We did. Everything's quarterback centric. The TV's over our shoulder is about the quarterback. They don't worry about the coach. Don't worry about the front office is your quarterback good enough because that's the central focus. So because of that, Patrick Mahomes, even to Shay, the greatest quarterback that he's ever seen play the position. Now think about that. So because it's about the quarterback, why wouldn't it be Patrick Mahomes? Because everyone is chasing that ghost. That's what they're doing now. All the other quarterbacks want to get to that acclaim. They want to be able to have a coach like Andy Reid and have weapons that Patrick Mahomes has utilized. So why is it not Patrick Mahomes? - I don't know why, but again, this is a jury of his peers. This is not a popularity contest. This isn't a fan contest. I'm curious how the top 10 shook out. McCaffrey has to be in there. - Yep. - I know Tyree Kill is in there, but who else is in there? That's, I got to pull up the entire-- - Max Crosby, Travis Kelsey, which I think is a joke that does feel like a popular contest deal. - Like who is Travis Kelsey? - So 10 to one is Max Crosby 10, Travis Kelsey 9, TJ Watt, Trent Williams, Chris Jones, Miles Garrett, Patrick Mahomes at four, McCaffrey three, Lamar Jackson two, come on, and Tyree Kill one. - Nah, I'm good. - Yeah, I would have Mahomes at one. Chris Jones would be in the top. What number was he? - Six. - Yeah, he'd be higher than that for me. And Trent Williams would be higher than that for me. - Sounds like a top 10 list of players you want to kick it with. That's what it sounds like to me. - Right. - Oh, I think I'm on Lamar. - That's what it sounds like to me. Lamar had him at home, it's just ridiculous. Like how many times do we have to do this? - Correct. - I get that he won MVP. Spags made him look like a joke in the playoff game. AFC title game, Lamar can't move the ball. It's not all his fault. He had receivers dropping passes. But if this guy can't figure out how to evade a blitz, then he's not the second best player in the NFL. - Now here, Shay, you and I and Cap and the audience knows that. They know that, but for the players, it's almost like they're pushing Lamar Jackson and willing Lamar Jackson to a championship. They respect that guy so much because he puts his body on the line, all that. But I think that a lot of players think, man, to solidify Lamar Jackson championship will never happen. I don't know. He's got all the individual achievements, but what about the ring? - Right. - I think that's how players look. They respect him that much. That's what all the things you said, Shay, are all true. Not even just opinion, it's true 'cause it happened. But I think the player is like, man, if Lamar can get one, even though he might not be his teammate, still, that he's got respect in the league? - Yeah. - Chris Jones, for me as high as I said, Trent Williams is higher for me. Max Crosby is higher for me. But Patrick Holmes is one. - No doubt. - Travis Kelsey in the top 10, he's not even the best tight end in football anymore. It's just enough. - He's pretty freaking good. - I'm not saying he's not, but last year was a career worst since his rookie season, saved a lot of energy for the playoffs. He was, I don't think he was going 100% in the regular season 'cause I don't think he can at his age and still be ready to go in the postseason. In top 10, that's popularity. That's this guy's Dayton Taylor Swift and he's walking Morgan Wallen out at Arrowhead. Let's vote him into the top 10. - Yeah, his legs have been tailored. - Coming up is around the NFL. Don't forget Jesse Rogers with Cubs and Sox and everything else MLB at 835. Shay Norlin. - All right, a little twist on around the NFL, which lately has become the bash the morning show segment. On sportsman like This Morning Evan Cohen said something I found egregious about the ongoing scandal and the allegations levied by the NCAA at the University of Michigan. Basically over the weekend, the NCAA said, "You're gonna be held responsible for this." They're hitting the university, Cheryl Moore, the head coach, with multiple level one violations in relation to science ceiling and in relation to recruiting violations, Jim Harbaugh is expected to be hit with a level one violation as well. Evan Cohen weighed in on this this morning. - I wonder also if they deem Cheryl Moore to be an easier target because he's new. Because he's not someone that everyone knows that, "Hey, let's go after him to show our power," which is ridiculous because again, if Harbaugh is responsible for stallions, why is he not responsible for more? And if he is, you already suspended him six games and if you want to prevent Harbaugh from coming back to college football, go ahead. But that should not fall into your own more. Whether he made mistakes or not, he was not the head coach at the time. It's not fair what they're going to do to him. - But he multiple problems with this. One, the NCAA didn't suspend Jim Harbaugh for six games. The NCAA suspended Jim Harbaugh for zero games. Michigan suspended him for three games and the Big Ten suspended him for three games in two separate suspensions last season. NCAA never got involved. That's problem one, problem two, not fair. Cheryl Moore deleted 53 text messages with Connor Stallions. He was getting the information. He was covered up the scandal. He took part in it and was probably the biggest beneficiary as the play caller of having opposing team signals. How on earth is it not fair to punish him? - Yeah, I'm with you, Shay. If he deleted 53 text messages, they were able to recover them. So then he said, all right, here you go. And they show conversations about the science dealing? - Cheryl Moore's is guilty as Jim Harbaugh. Come on, Evan, you're better than that. - See, this is the problem, the lying and the cover up. We don't know Connor Stallions. We don't know him, we don't know him, we don't know him. And then you have the evidence of you actually, you didn't know who Connor Stallions was, and you know what Connor Stallions did for the university. So here's the deeper question I wanna ask you, Shay, regarding this. First of all, in the light of NIL, clearly the NCAA has no teeth anymore. Remember back in the day when they would snatch banners and snatch, I mean, what teeth do they have anymore? You would think that in this scenario with the, with Michigan, the science dealing, that the NCAA would have something to say about it. The big 10 had more to say about it. The university had more to say about it than the NCAA. Is that even a thing anymore? Real question, is that a thing anymore? Does the NCAA step in and do anything anymore? - Not like they used to. Every time somebody threatens them with little get, oh, well, back off. The only people they hold accountable, the coaches. - This is why these coaches are leaving and fling these jobs is because there's no accountability. There's no czar, there's nobody in front. That's my question. So in this scenario, okay, if Shamar, Shamar more clearly is guilty and my eyes, Shay, but then where does this venture come from? - Oh, and this is their problem, hoodie. Because it's one thing when they can drop a nuke on SMU and nobody's really gonna riot. It's one thing when they can hit Penn State with a sledgehammer. When you go after Michigan, you're gonna be in for trouble, especially now when the CFP is the governing body over the post-season and the NCAA can institute a two-year post-season ban, which I've heard is the likely penalty. But Michigan could just turn around and say, we don't wanna be a part of you anymore. Like the big 10 and the SEC make all the money. The NCAA answers to those two conferences, not the other way around. So if the big 10 and the SEC say, we are our own thing now, we don't wanna be a part of you, we're not even gonna listen to what you have to say. What, how can the NCAA fight that? - Well, Sharon Moore should be suspended for the year. If he fully knew what was going on with Connor Stallion's cap, Coach Moore should be gone for a year. - Right, if he was helping to orchestrate it, if he just knew that's different for me. But if he was part of the sign stealing, gone. Second question, since the NCAA has no teeth anymore, should the banner be snatched? - I don't care about snatching the banner. - No, no, that's what I asked you. I asked you for an answer. No, no matter what you care about, I asked you because in light of the story that we have today, do you believe that the banner should be snatched, taken away or asterisk? - Based on what I know today, no. Now, if you present me the evidence and say, here you go, and they've got sign stealing a plenty, and it helped them win games, because there's no, for me it's not a coincidence that Jim Harbaugh's record was okay, and then all of a sudden the allegations of Connor Stallion's getting involved, his record took off. Like, oh, wow, they're amazing. - Yeah? - So if you prove to me, if you could document, here it is, we've got it. Yeah, then I would snatch the banner. Calla Perry gave some kids some money. What do you have? Two banners taken down? - Right, no matter what this thing that we saw on the playing surface, the record is the record. And the record is, hey, you won the National Championship, however, and as we have written in the books. So Shay, again, when it comes to Michigan, if this is all true, does Michigan vacate that championship? - I'm actually-- - For the book. - This is gonna surprise you, I'm gonna say no. And I know, if I were the NCAA, I wouldn't snatch the banner, and I don't think that they should. And the reason why they shouldn't is because they knew about the sign stealing scandal before the National Championship got played. - You had an opportunity, if you wanted to be serious about this, to ban them from the postseason last year. - You could not have. They said that they agreed that they would not gonna pursue this till after the season. And he had every right to go to court. There was no way it was gonna be adjudicated by that point in time. - I understand, I'm saying, if they wanted to do it, they should have maximized their power and figured out a way to do it last year. But because they didn't, and they allowed the games to be played. - He had the legal process to follow. They could always have found a way. - They could not. They could not. All the lawyers that have talked about it said, "He'll drag this out, it'll be way past." And he'll be gone to the NFL. There's no way they could have without him getting due process. They could not. - They had all the show cost stuff. They were ready to go to court in December. - And he had legal representation. They were gonna drag it out. They were not gonna have that done. So now, okay, guess what? - I'm not stripping it. - I'm stripping it. - We knew about it. We played the game. It is what it is. And frankly, we all know Louisville beat Michigan in the national title, whatever year that was, 2013. We all know, we all watch the game. I don't care that they took the banner down, Louisville won the national championship. You're gonna take the banner down and erase everybody's memories? No. Two-year post-season band, I hate that school. That's my pound of flesh because the damage is recruiting. Makes it very difficult going forward to build a program when you can't go to the playoff. That's my pound of flesh. I don't care what they do with the banner. Keep it up, celebrate, have fun. Enjoy your memories. I don't have to legitimize it. The court of public opinion can hang an asterisk next to it, but I'm not taking the banner away. - Okay, 'cause I think that these are issues that are on the table coming into this season for Michigan. Sharon Moore won. The other one is what is the record now for Michigan because if it was all through a cheating scandal, again, you ain't cheating, you ain't trying. We've heard that for a long time. But if it's egregious where you could see it upfront and couldn't care less when anyone else stayed, okay. Well, again, the record is shameful when you have a championship taken away from you. Shane, great. - Did you see they also confirmed Conner Stallions was indeed in the Bobby Valentine disguise on the Central Michigan sideline at Michigan State? - Yeah. - Getting signals from the Spartan sideline? - Denied, denied, denied. Until it's like, oh, yeah, we did actually know that guy. And by the way, it was as obvious to Cap and I to anyone else that Jim Harbaugh was gonna leave Michigan because of this issue. He didn't want to be anywhere around it. If there was no scandal, it wouldn't surprise me if Jim would still be in the job because he loves Michigan that much. But because when you get the long arm of the law coming, Cap, just like for Pete Carroll or anybody else. - I'm out. - Coach, can we talk to you? - I'm out, NFL, you handle it. - Right. - Coach Moore, you've done a great job here. You take this grenade, take it. - Right. - I'm out. I got that to do with it. - Yeah, I would not allow them to have a banner hanging up, national champion. If those allegations and everything they make public is true, gone. - It would be interesting too if the NFL makes him answer for whatever the college football suspension ends up being. They did that with Tressel after Ohio State. They would not, they made him serve a suspension in Indianapolis. - Yeah, seven games. - In the year Cleveland. - I think it was Indy. I can double check, but I know that they made Tressel serve the suspension and they don't like to piss off their free farm system in the NCAA. So it'll be interesting if the suspension comes down collegiately for Harbaugh, if the NFL says, yeah, you gotta serve that. That'll make the Chargers real happy. - Yeah, you're right. In the Indianapolis Colts suspended him for the first six games as a replay, he was a replay game consultant for them. - Yeah. - Last time I saw him, he was the head of Youngstown State. - President, yeah. I've spent time running my college coach with his brother. Bob Nightingale said this weekend. - Tune in. - This dude makes a million dollars a year. So that means he's got like a million four left. Max, how is he on that plane? - Yeah, I think it might be his, well, I guess second to last plane trip 'cause he got to go there and then you got to come back. Oh, let me go back to last week. And I found out a lot about this on Friday night. So nowhere to report it until your show, of course, on Monday here. So last Tuesday is the trade deadline. I asked Ghetts about, is, or fall safe for the final two months, completely did not give him any sort of endorsement at all. Said we just need to get through tonight. So Wednesday the first, I was gonna actually, or the day after the trade deadline, the 31st, I was gonna take the day off, but I started to hear things over there that they were preparing for a managerial change. I went to the park on Wednesday. Post game, I even tweeted out, rumblings about Grefall's job status because it's what happens. You never know, especially with the White Sox. So then there's a meeting on Wednesday after their final home game there before the off day Thursday and the road trip starts. It was Ghetts, Grefall, Jerry, and Tony, Larissa. Those are the four in the meeting. Now, my understanding is, I thought he was gonna get dismissed in that meeting. It did not happen, and that's the murky part. I'm not sure exactly why. I don't know why, maybe Jerry stepped in and said, we're not gonna settle this losing streak with the next guy, or I'm not even saying he brought it up. It just didn't happen. So for whatever reason, he wasn't dismissed. Everything's been put on hold because they went on this road trip and now they're out in Oakland and to fire them there. So either they're waiting to come back or they're waiting to break the streak. I mean, it's not if it's just about a win. And I think the timing could be right before the Cup Series. - So if the Sox win a game, and I think it's likely, actually, Jesse, in Oakland, you still believe that Pedro could be gone. - I do, by the end of the week. I do. Now, with the caveat that Jerry is a wild card, right? Who can predict what Jerry's going to do? I really thought he was gonna be fired last week. So I'm throwing that big caveat out there. I think by the end of the week, they will dismiss him, but anything is possible. Again, it's a win, it's not an F. So if it's seven weeks from now, it's seven weeks from now, but we know he's not going to be coming back. I've been talking about that for months with you guys. That's not a big shock. So we'll see. I think that either way, I'm not even sure Charlie Montoya is gonna be the one promoted to the interim. I'm not sure who it's going to be. I assume it's going to be him, but I'm not positive about that. And by the way, they may not win this week against the A's. The Oakland A's have a good offense. And that's exactly the part that hurts the White Sox because once you get to the late innings, the White Sox go to their bullpen. If you have a decent offense, you attack. And that we've seen this over and over. They've been outscored in the eighth inning. Tremendous to mind, I think by 70 runs on the season, something like that. The Oakland A's over the last 30 days have the second most home runs in the American League behind the A's. Third highest OPS behind the A's and right Sox. Oakland can hit. And that's a big problem for the White Sox when they get to their bullpen. - In terms of like the kid they're bringing up tonight, they've got some kid coming from Triple A. - What's his name, Cap? - Kai Phillips, I believe. Kai Bush, Kai Bush. - Bush, yeah. - Kai Bush is going to start tonight and then Cannon will go tomorrow. I mean, Jesse, where are we with the pitching? Is Crochet going to get three innings against the Cubs on Friday? Two innings? Are they going to shut him down at some point? Where is this? - Yeah, they'll shut him down at some point, but not probably till September and he'll do the four innings. Max 70 pitches type of thing probably on Friday. That's been the trend. Left cap, they're holding tryouts. That's where we are with the pitching. And then from day one, remember to go back to March when I looked at that roster for you guys and said, "There's not one pitcher that remains in his same role." They turned over 12 pitchers and Michael Copic was moved to the bullpen. Five new starters. You don't see that other than the expansion teams. And then they traded some guys around the deadline. So it's a complete mess. It's a AAA staff for the most part and added Crochet being ramped down and Fettie being moved. And this is what you get. I was talking to Tommy Famm over the weekend, okay? And he must have mentioned this to me three different times when he was in town here with the Cardinals. He mentioned this three different times. Tommy cares a lot about the team, but he knew the Sox were done and he was more worried about himself and moving on. And Tommy kept saying to me, you know, it really stunked that we kept blowing leads. Like the white Sox have blown the most leads in the league, right? He's like, because we'd be up by a runner two and they'd be bringing in their B reliever. And all of a sudden we'd blow the lead and the other teams A reliever would come in. And my fourth at bat was against the guy throwing 100 miles an hour. He's like, this happened to us over and over. My fourth at bat, I must have just been terrible because our bullpen blew all these leads. And to me, the shock of the season is Golden Spikes winner Andrew Vaughn, Golden Spikes winner Andrew Bennett Tendi and the whole list, not being able to perform on offense. It's been putrid with guys that should be better hitters. Here's Jesse with Tommy Famm. You found out that you were going to be a Cardinal Howe, Tommy. Jesse Rogers and then every single other reporter, you go down the list. I knew I was traded before. I guess he gave me the call and then I was asking them. I'm like, who's a part of the deal? You know, I find out all the information now on Twitter or via text message from you guys. How about that? Damn. Jesse Rogers. You found out that you were going to be a Cardinal Howe, Tommy. Jesse Rogers. The bat. How about that Jesse? Yeah, I did call him last Tuesday and just sort of confirm that he was traded. Like I heard that he was traded, but you always want to try. So why not go to the source? I know Tommy, I have his number. I called him and I said, hey, here and you're going to St. Louis. Good luck or whatever. I said to him, he goes, really? I didn't know that. And so he got the call a few minutes later. But you know, trade deadline day, all hell's breaking loose. You know, everyone's at Twitter and phone calls and text. And so I guess I shouldn't be shocked, but that's the first time I've informed somebody they were-- as Craig Council said something to you at all since the-- that's a bad take, Jesse. Has he said anything? Well, I mean, about that, about the bad take. Does he know that that's become like-- Oh, yes. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. He absolutely knows. Yeah, can I tell you a quick story? So I was at Chicago Cut with the Sunday night baseball crew on Saturday, Saturday night. And Craig was there. Council was there. And I brought my wife Tracy. And, of course, I introduced Craig to Tracy. I only say it's Craig. This is Craig Council. I don't say it's the Cubs' manager. She doesn't realize it. And we turn away, I said, yeah, that's the Cubs' management. Oh darn it, I would have said that's a bad take, Craig. That's a bad take, Craig. So I'm like, thank God. But I did-- I texted this to Sylvie Lassa. I did get a good observation post game last night from Craig. So I made a-- I said something about Pete Crow. So I have a bad take and a good observation from Craig this year. I feel like I even did things out. Jesse, could you give us the quote? Maybe not the name, but the quote of someone at 35th and Shields that's given a blanket statement on the way the white Sox have been going about their business. There's got to be some kind of embarrassment or something that was said a blanket statement about what's happening over there. Yeah, I will tell you-- I'll just tell you something similar to that. And I've had a couple calls, like from serious people in the business and baseball world asking me, is this going to force Jerry to sell the team? Is this going to-- like they're almost lining up for it, these people I've talked to. Is this going to force him to sell the team? And I'm-- I don't-- I've stopped trying to figure out Jerry Ryan's door, so I don't know the answer to that. But that's what's on people's mind. And even the league office, I think, is this-- are we going to see this team go on the market because of what's happened here? My guess is, no, I'm almost 99.9% sure. The answer is no to that. But that's what people are thinking. There needs to be an ownership change over here. In terms of the Chicago white Sox and going down in history, Jesse, like there's been these reports, Grafaul said it's on the players. And others have said that's not exactly what he said. Are they aware, like, this is going to live on? It's not like-- oh, they're 30 under. They're 60 under. Yeah. Oh, yeah, they're aware. They're aware. And I mean, Jerry's press conference last year is going to go down in Chicago history when he said he hired Chris Goetz for the quick fix. I mean, that is going to go down in history because they're getting anything but a quick fix. I think you're right, Hopi. This is, you know, minimum five years, more like seven, probably, or six, or whatever the case may be. It's going to be a while. Tommy tried to paint a picture to me that they're not that far, but I think he was just trying to be kind. And to be honest, I've heard much better things about the locker room this year than last year. I think Grafaul did learn some lessons. I don't think he's a good manager. He will be gone. The last year was the real managerial disaster, the lack of leadership. This year, he was asked to be a babysitter for a rebuilding team, and he really hasn't done that well, right? He just hasn't. So, yeah, I think it's going to be a long time. Jesse is always. We appreciate the time. All right, boys. Talk to you later. Let you know if there's any news. All right, see you, but Jesse Rogers on the Car X tire, and I'll hop. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom. Tune in. You don't really call the Car X name. John Shriffen, next on Captain J. Hood. Captain J. Hood, I'm back. We are back, baby. We are back. We are back. We are back. On Chicago's home for sports, ESPN Chicago. White Sox A's, you can catch the coverage starting at 8 o'clock right here on the home of the White Sox, ESPN 1,000. Cap, you and I have been down this road before about the television voice of the White Sox, John Shriffen. Correct. We have not talked about him since early in the season, but once again, his name is in the news. Yeah, and I have said to you, he's a new. He's trying to work hard, learn the craft, but he has a great partner in Stoney. His bosses, Brooks and them have been very, very supportive of him, but he needs to stop engaging where he calls out other people in the media. He just needs to stop. This happened over the weekend. Yeah, but it's also been a huge clubhouse voice, especially recently. There was a-- I don't want to call it an article, a statement. It was just bad reporting that was put out there that Pedro de Paul had lost the clubhouse, basically saying that Pedro de Paul made some statements about it. This losing streak happens. It's on the team. It never happened. It was just purely awful reporting by a non-reporter and a radio station in town unfortunately went with it because that's just what they do. But yeah, I haven't spoke up for Pedro. And he said, that's not what happened. That's not true. But it was taken out of context. And even though nobody wants to be in this situation, it just shows how this team is still together as one unit trying to get out of it together. Yeah, but it's also been a huge clubhouse voice, especially recently. There was a-- What I would say to John Shriffen again is that you can support the White Sox without throwing everyone else under the bus. My god, man, the Sox are going through a tailspin. The story is, is how the Sox can get out of it and tell us the day-to-day news about what's happening in there. You and Stoney have to be able to paint a bright picture in the darkness that is White Sox baseball this season. The idea that you get on the air and talk about, well, it's not an article. Well, it was just a statement of reports. And you know, when we do in sports radio, we just make up stuff. Ultimately, it's what he's saying there. Oh, that's a report. Well, you know, that's what we do in radios. And they just-- they go to a story and they just go with it. That's not true. And I don't want John Shriffen to paint all of us in that picture. Just call the game. That's what-- my advice to John, just call the game. Stop making yourself the story. You will never win in the court of opinion in sports radio. You just won't. You know how you get your respect? Just call the game, man. Give us some stories that we don't know about the ball club without trying to throw someone else under the bus. That's all. Is that not fair? That is totally fair, totally well said. And what I would say to him is, if you want to say, I know there are people that think Pedro lost the locker room, I can tell you I talked to Gavin Sheets, and that's not true. And Gavin has come to his-- leave it at that. You don't have to come out and say a reporter, and it's awful and not true, and that's what they do. Leave it alone, man. It's bad. Just bad. It's just you're not going to win. I'm doing the broadcast with you. There's been reports that Pedro Grafals lost the locker room. I talked to Gavin Sheets, and he says the opposite. Two balls, two strikes. That's all. You don't have to go in a deep dive. And also, you put Stoney in a bad spot again. Again. Again. So he's got to respond to that because he's over there. As an expert. Correct. So now you put him in a bad-- just call the game. You can defend the white Sox and talk about the white Sox in a positive way. Without talking about someone else. That's all. Totally agree. Totally, totally agree. Three Bears in the Hall of Fame. We talk about it in two minutes on Captain J. Hood.
