[Music] Welcome to this week's reefers rivalries with me, Michael Twentyman, the grim reefer. And this week, I'm going to be bringing you the conference rivalry of the Dals Cowboys versus the San Francisco 49ers. Now, before we get into this rivalry, I'd like to give a birthday shout out to the college football function host that knows the most about college football. Mr. AKA CM Funk, Mr. AKA Lock up your grandma. So yeah, happy birthday, CM. Hope you have a good one. Or as you would say in my cumbrian tone. Happy birthday, but I hope you have a good year and like it. And not much has really happened since last time I spoke to you. It's not been really dramatic, apart from a couple of days later of recording this because I ordered a new lead because some of my wannabe rabbits got into my studio bag. And I actually don't know how he's managed to do this, but he managed to take one bite out of every lead. Now, these leads are all together in a ball, so this is a planned attack. You know, I think he's done this on purpose because there is literally one bite taken out of every lead. So I had ordered some new leads which came to there, so I managed to get it recorded to there. Yeah, a little bit behind as well because last week I've been working on, I mean, as I mentioned in the last episode, I've been looking into doing some streaming on Twitch for all this. And I'll get into all that near the end of this episode. Yes, I spent like a lot of last week trying to prepare that. And then, you know, one of my matters is like streaming videos. When we're playing this game called Aaki, he just decided to quit. I think it was Wednesday or some of it last week, which left us in a loaded craft because the nature of this game, you've got to keep on top of everything. So he decided to quit. He said basically what happened, it is a very stressful game. And he likes to play it a lot slower pair so now. And, you know, he gets attached to things. You know, he spent a bit of time crafting this crosspour or this shield. And when he goes out and gets killed by a dinosaur and loses it, you know, he started getting a bit upset. And then one day when I was at work, he was on and, you know, we had all our dinosaurs. We had a little house by the beach with all our dinosaurs lived. You control them by whistling and he did the wrong whistling command and all the dinosaurs jumped in the sea. And I think two or three of them got hit by a shark. And he was really upset about that. And that was the final straw for him, really. He's like, "I've quit the game. It's too stressful. I can't deal with it anymore." So I was like, "Okay, I'll be fine." You know, you can't play two different playing styles. I like to go out and own T-Rexes and, you know, trying to own dinosaurs. But he likes to go around and collect berries and make portions and stuff like that instead. So, you know, he was sort of slowing us down on the hunt. So I thought, you know, it's a bad thing. I'll go solo. So he's like, "Yeah, I'm quitting. Take all my stuff. Get all my stuff in there." You know, I'll just keep watching you on Twitch. So... The day after he did that, I thought, "I'm gonna have to go and clean this base out." So I went and cleared the base. I thought, "I'm not living around here. There's fucking sharks in water all the time. Every time you fall in water, you get attacked by a shark." So, you know, I had to have a flock of birds that are used to transport things. So I went down with these flock of birds and packed all the base up, all the stuff. Everything, the cupboards, all the weapons, all the armour. Took it all back to me base that I had in land. And then I went back to the base for one last time and there. Yeah, he was still there. His body was still there. Even though he quit, his body was still there. His cluster's been asleep. And also, a couple of these dinosaurs were still there. They had these weird little pig things that he had living in his house. So I thought, you know, he's not coming back on. Then pigs hauled a lot of meat. You know, he'd get a lot of good prime meat off of them, a lot of hide. So I slaughtered them, like in his house. And I went downstairs to the courtyard bit and we had a toilet in there. So I put the toilet in the middle of the courtyard and went to where he was sleeping. And I stripped him off down to his underpants and carried him over and sat him on the toilet. And I executed him on the toilet for being a deserted and living his by myself. I thought it was hilarious. I made a little video of it and I was going to send it to him. But then I thought that I was already upset as it was. He might be even more upset if he sees that. But as far as I was concerned, he wasn't coming back. But then, you know, over the weekend, he decided that he would go back on to the game. And when he logged on, he was just there. Nothing. Just lying there, nothing. No pets, nothing. So he's in a little bit of a bud. We have it all again, but we're quite sorry. We've decided that he can take the role of the governor and I will be the role of the hunter. And then he won't get upset when he presses the wrong button and a dinosaur gets killed. So without further ado, let's get into this rivalry between the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. And this is one of the greatest inter-divisional rivalries in the NFL. The Cowboys play in the NFC East and the 49ers in the NFC West. And even though they don't play every year, said the player at least once every three years, or at least once every six seasons at each home stadium due to the NFL rotation and divisional schedules, with their respective divisions paired up, these two teams have faced each other a lot in the postseason nine times, actually. And it's the second most between any two NFL teams only behind the 49ers and the Packers. They've played it over 10 times. Now you might think, well, why have you done that one? The reason for it is, with the timeline that Mike's got, with the team of Destiny, this rivalry just falls perfect for the next couple of episodes that he's got coming up. Now this rivalry has been voted the eighth best rivalry by Sports Illustrated, and the NFL top 10 has ranked this rivalry as the tenth best in the NFL. CBS ranked it the number one NFL rivalry of the 1990s. And in 2015, this rivalry featured on the NFL networks. It had two episodes, the timeline entitled The Tale of Two Seas, with actors Sam Elliott, Cowboys, and Jeremy Renner, 49ers as the Raiders. And this rivalry between the Cowboys and 49ers, it started gaining traction in the 1970s when the Cowboys defeated the 49ers in the 1970s and 1971 championship games, and then beat them again in 1972 in the divisional playoff games. So let's delve a little bit into that series of them, three games. So the 1970 conference game between the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers held at the Queza Stadium in San Francisco. And although Dallas quarterback Craig Martin only completed seven out of 22 passes for 101 yards, rookie half back to end Thomas rushed 443 yards and got two passes for 24. As Dallas converted two, three quarter interceptions into 14 points to defeat the 49ers. And on the second drive in the game, the 49ers quarterback John Brody did a 42 yard completion to June Washington at the Cowboys nine yard line and set up Brody Gossett 16 yards field goal to give him a free lead. And Mike Clark at the Dallas Cowboys missed a field goal from 40 yards but they kicked a field goal from 21 yards to tie the game 3-3 within the first half. And it was in the third quarter when this game finally came alive after a couple of puns back and forward. On the first player, Brody got sacked by linebacker Dave Edwards for a seven yard loss. Then on the second down, Lee Roy Jordan intercepted Brody's pass return for four yards, which allowed Thomas to score a touchdown room for Dallas on the next player, breaking three tackles on route to the end zone. On the next set of downs, Dallas Cowboys' Melbourne floor picked off a pass from Brody and returned into the 90 yards to the Cowboys 38 line, setting off a 62 yard scoring drive for the Cowboys. The key player in this drive was Fullback Walt Garrison, who had a 12 yard carry again 24 yards on the screen pass and finished it off with a five yard touchdown catch from Martin to give the Cowboys a 17-3 lead. San Francisco responded with a player 72 yards to score on Brody's 26 yard touchdown pass to tight end Dick Witcher and cut the score off to 17-10, going into the fourth quarter. But they were shut out for the rest of the game. They nearly got a big score and chance when Thomas Fumpled the ball, put receiver Reggie Rooker, recovered it, allowing Dallas to keep possession and take a lot of time off the clock. With a drive to the 49er 17 yard line. Clark missed a field goal attempt from there, and given San Francisco a chance to try and touch down, put the five as they could make it down was a Dallas 39 yard line. Gossip missed a field goal from 47 yards out, and the 49ers wouldn't threaten to score again. And this was the first time the 49ers had played a playoff game at home since 1957. And the team's last home game that was ever played at the Casar Stadium. Johnny Mephist sang the national anthem, and Tony Bennett performed his signature song "I Left My Heart" in San Francisco at half time. So the 1971 championship game was obviously a very much from the year, from the previous season. But prior to 1975, the NFL rotated host and rights of playoff games between the divisions, and the NFC East Champions Cowboys had the right to host the 1971 title game. This was the fourth time they played in the title game, and only the second time for the 49ers. So in the first playoff game at the Texas Stadium, the Cowboys defense dominated the 49ers offense, allowing only 61 rushing yards, nine first downs, and a fast-free interceptions. So it scall us into the second quarter until veteran Dallas defender had defensive end. George Andre intercepted a screen pass from John Prudy, and returned its seven yards to the 49ers. One yard line, and set up Calvin Hills for the one yard touchdown run. This was the only score of the game until the middle of the third quarter, when Brudy's 24 yard completion to tight-end Ted Qualick. Set up Bruce Gossett's 28 yard field goal. Following a missed 47 yard field goal by Gossett on San Francisco's next drive, Dallas quarterback Roger Selbach finished the quarter with a 17 yard completion to half-back downros. Then he started off the fourth with a 23 yard pass to tight-end Billy Trucks. Dwayne Thomas completed the 14-player 80 yard drive with a two-handed touchdown run, and gave the Cowboys a 14-3 lead, and that was the final score. So in the 1973 divisional playoff round, the 49ers jumped to a 7-0 early lead when Vic Washington returned the opening kick-off 97 yards for a touchdown. Dallas cut the deficit down to 7-3, when kick-off 23, 37 yard field goal. In the second quarter, 49ers received a dream Washington's 52 yard reception with the ball deep into Dallas territory. Only to have the Cowboys cornerback Charlie Waters end the drive with an interception on the one yard line, but shortly after the turnover, Dallas quarterback Craig Martin lost the fumble while being hit by Wendell Hall and Tommy Hart, which linebacker Ed Beard recovered on the Cowboys' 15 yard line. This led to Larry Schreiber's one yard touchdown run, making the score 14-3 late in that quarter. Martin was intercepted by linebacker Skip Vadun, oh my god, Vanderbundt. On the Dallas 32, set Nubs Divers second-Russian touchdown, then increased the lead to 21-3. But Martin rallied his team back to 10 unanswered points with a 45-yard field goal and a Lance Alworth 28-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 21-13 within the first half. In the second half, the 49ers blew the chance to increase the lead when Bruce Gossett missed a 40-yard field goal attempt, but then got the ball back on their skip. Second interception, Dallas managed to force a punt, which Jim McCann sent out a bounce in the Cowboys' five-yard line. A few players led a defensive tackle, Charles Krueger, stripped the ball from running back Calvin Hill, and the 49ers recovered, leaving to Stieber's third one-yard touchdown run, giving his team a command in 28-13 lead. But shortly before the end of the third quarter, Cowboys coached Tom Landry, replaced Martin with Roger Starbuck, but it didn't seem to help. On the first drive, Starbuck lost a fumble while being tackled by Bob Hoskins. San Francisco was in prime position to put the previous season losses behind them and get this game away with another score, but they couldn't get the ball into the end zone and Gossett missed another 32-yard goal line. Causing a huge reversal of momentum. Now with the ball, Hill ripped off a 48-yard game, allowing Frisch to get a 20-70-yard field goal, trimming the lead to 28-16. Later in the quarter, a poor punt from McCann gave Dallas the ball at the 49ers' 45-yard line. Starbuck then led the team to the end zone, completing two passes to full-back Walt Garrison for 16 yards and two more to Billy Parks. The second a 20-yard touchdown completion that cut the score down to 28-23, with less than two minutes left. We've time running out, Dallas had attempted an on-site kick, and their 49ers received a press and rally briefly handled the ball, but couldn't hang on to it, and it was recovered by Mel Renfro. On the first play after the recovery, Starbuck gained 21 yards on the quarterback's grumble. Then he converted a 19-yard game to Parks, who ran out of bounds at the San Francisco 10-yard line. On the next play, Starbuck threw 10 yards touchdown pass to Ron Sellers, giving Dallas a 30-28 lead with just 52 seconds left. However, the 49ers were not quite out of the game, needing only a field call to win. Brody complete three consecutive passes, but a 23-yard completion to Riley that would have put the 49ers within field goal range was eliminated by Holden Pinity. Brody was intercepted by Warts on the next play to end the game. So yeah, back up, quarterback Roger Starbuck, replaced the inactive Craig Martin to lead the Cowboys with 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 28-13 deficit. So this was the third consecutive year that Dallas had eliminated San Francisco from the playoffs. So after that, a bank of three wins to the Cowboys. The next time these two teams met in the conference game was in 1981, the legendary 1981 conference game between the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. And after forcing Dallas to put on the open and drive, the San Francisco 49er quarterback, John Montana, completed a 17-yard pass to Charlie Young, a 24-yard to Lenville Elliott, and then thrown eight yards touchdown to wide receiver Freddy Solomon. Dallas responded with Danny White's 20-yard pass to Butch Johnson, setting up a 44-yard field goal. Then the 49ers running back, Bill Ring lost a fumble on his own 29-yard line, leading to White's 26-yard touchdown pass to Tony Hill, that put the Cowboys up 10-7. So in the second quarter, San Francisco reached the Cowboys 27-yard line only to lose the ball when Evison Walls intercepted a pass from Montana at the end zone. But after forcing Dallas to put Montana through a 20-yard touchdown to Clark to retake the lead 14-10. Dallas responded with an 80-yard drive, including a controversial pass interference penalty on the 49ers defensive back run a lot, which nullified his interception, and gave the Cowboys a 35-yard gain at the San Francisco 12-yard line. Three players later running back to only Dorset scored a 5-yard rush touchdown to give Dallas a 17-4 lead. In the third quarter, San Francisco got another scoring opportunity when Dwight Hicks returned a 12-yard punt to midfield, the 49ers then drove to Dallas' 16-yard line, but once again the field to score when Montana flew a pass that bounced out of Elliot's hands and was intercepted by Randy White. However, the Cowboys soon returned the favor when Danny White's interception to the linebacker Bobby Leopold, and this time the 49ers converted, regaining the lead to 21-17 with a 2-yard touchdown from run on back Johnny Davis. One minute into the fourth quarter, and the Cowboys got a 22-yard field goal to cut the deficit down to 21-20. Then Walsh recovered a fumble from run on back walled elsewhere at the midfield and set up White's 21-yard touchdown pass to tight end, Doug Cosby, a 27-21 advantage. Things got even better for Dallas when Walsh recorded his second interception from Montana on the next drive at the Cowboys 27. Dallas managed to pick up a few first downs, but Foster punt and White's kick gave San Francisco the ball on their own 11, with 4 minutes and 54 seconds left on the game. Montana subsequently led the 49ers 83 yards to the Dallas 6-yard line, Elliott rushed four times for 30 yards on the drive, and Solomon also made a big impact, catching two passes for 18 yards and rushing for 15 on a wide receiver reverse. First and third down and three on the Cowboys 6 with 58 seconds left. Montana threw a high pass that Clark just managed to break ahead of Walsh and reaching the air for the game winning touchdown. That pass is known as the catch. The Cowboys only needed a field goal to win, and still had enough time left in the game for one last drive. White threw a completion to Joe Pearson. They almost went for a touchdown, but 49ers corner Eric White made a key tackle by getting one hand inside Pearson's jersey and dragging him down. One player later, Tyler Sacht, White forced in the fumble, and the recovery by Stuckey, and the 49ers had their victory, and their redemption for the last three times that they were first in the playoffs. The rivalry became more intense from the 1992 to 1994 seasons when these two teams faced each other in the NFC Championship game during all three of those seasons. In the 1992 conference game between these two, there was a long cupboard by Mike and Teddy in the 1992 team of Destiny, Tyler's Cowboys. On San Francisco's first drive of the game, a reversal hold and penalty on guard Guy McClinder nullified a 63-yard touchdown completion from a quarterback's debut to wide receiver Jay Rice, and the 49ers had to punt. Despite a 19-yard reception from Michael Irvin on the Cowboys' first player, they also had to punt. But returner Alan Grant fumbled after a hit from Dixon Edwards and Dallas Fullback, Donald Johnson, recovered on the 49ers' 22-yard line. The Cowboys restarted their drive with the completion to Irvin. This won on the 21-yard line to the 1-yard line, but the San Francisco defense managed to hold up for three consecutive players, forced in Dallas to settle for a Linelius 20-yard field goal. San Francisco running back. Mark Logan returned to kick off 50 yards to the Cowboys' 48-yard line, aided by a 16-yard run from Ricky Waters. San Francisco drove 48 yards and scored with Jung's first touchdown run to take a 7-to-3 lead. Dallas was forced to punt, and on the next drive after Troy Ekwin was sacked twice, won by Bill Romansky, and another by Martin Harrison for 19 total yards, and Grant returned the football to the Cowboys' 47-yard line. San Francisco then drove into the Dallas 29-yard line, put the drive stalled there when Mike Cover missed a 47-yard field goal. After the punt, Waters lost the fumble and was recovered by defensive back Kevin Smith, aided by defensive Holden, called against Pierce Holt for Holden on running back Emmett Smith at the line for the third down. Dallas took the lead, 10-to-7, with Smith's 4-yard touchdown run. A 21-yard reception by Rice sparked a 49ers drive to the Cowboys' 10-yard line, where Cover made a 28-yard field goal to tie the game with less than 2 minutes left of the second quarter. Covers kick off, went out of bounds, giving Dallas a chance to score before the end of the half. Ekwin managed to lead them to the 49ers' 25-yard line, but Elliott's 43-yard field goal attempt went wide right, and it was tied at 10, going into the half. After receiving the second half, kick off, the Cowboys' March 78 yards, featuring a 38-yard lead catch by Alvin Harper, over Eric Davis to score on Johnson's 3-yard touchdown run to take the lead, 17-to-10. The 49ers took back with a 35-yard completion from Young to Rice, and set up a 43-yard field goal by Cover, cutting the score to 17-to-13. However, Dallas put together the 79-yard drive, which consumed nine minutes with a key 31-yard reception to tight end, Jay Novak. The second long drive was capped by Ekwin's 16-yard touchdown pastor Smith, given the Cowboys a 24-to-13 advantage. On the insurance drive for San Francisco midway through the fourth, the Cowboys' linebacker Ken Norton Jr. intercepted a pass from Young, and returned it to the 49ers' 45-yard line. They managed to get it down to the 70-yard line, but rather than attempt to field goal on fourth down in one, Smith attempted a run for the first time, but was tackled by Michael Walter. Ooh, sorry, for a no gain. The 49ers then drove 93 yards to score on Rice's five-yard touchdown reception, cutting the lead of 24-to-20 with four minutes and 22 seconds left in the game. But on the first play after the insurance kickoff, Ekwin threw 14-yard pass to Harper, who ended up running for a 70-yard gain, and San Francisco nine-yard line. Three players later, wide receiver, Kelvyn Martin scored a 60-yard touchdown, making it 30-to-20. The extra point was blocked with three minutes of 43 seconds. The 49ers attempted one last drive to come back, but Young was intercepted, this time by a three-james Washington, at the 2-minute warning, thus ending the hopes of the 49ers come back. So this was the fifth meeting in the process between these two, and you know, Kelvoy is a winner in this, with their four-to-one. The 1993 conference championship game between these two teams, which I think is rather next up on the list of the team of Destiny cities, or it might have already dropped, depending on when this one gets dropped. But Dallas took the opening kick-off and about 75 yards, 11 players, to score on a running back, and with Smith's five-yard touchdown. Five seconds into the second quarter, the 49ers finished a nine-yard player, 80-yard drive, and tied the game on quarterback's debuting seven-yard touchdown to full-back Tom Raffen. But then the Cowboys scored three unknowns to touchdowns to score 28-7, before half-time. First, it drove 80 yards in 11 players, to score on a four-yard run by full-back title Johnson. Then Thomas Everett intercepted the ball from Young and returned the 14 yards to the 49ers 24, setting up Smith's 11-yard touchdown reception from Troy Ekman. Five minutes later, Ekman finished a 72-yard drive with a 19-yard score to the tight end, Jane Ovak. In the third quarter, Ekman suffered a game-ending concussion, knocking him so senseless that when the team doctor asked him where the Super Bowl was going to be played, his answer was Henrietta, which was Ekman's home town in Oklahoma. Then just over five minutes later in the third quarter, San Francisco run-back Ricky Waters ran for four-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 28-14. However, 30-year-old Dallas quarterback Bernie Cosser, responding by and leading the Cowboys 82 yards to the momentum shattering touchdown, which included a critical 12-yard completion to Michael Irvin, and a third and nine from Dallas 19. On the last play, he connected with wide receiver Alvin Harper. For a 42-yard touchdown, Cowboys kicker Eddie Murphy later added a 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory. And the Dallas beat. The San Francisco 49ers again, 38-21. Now Troy Ekman led a game-punk that he had no memory of playing this game according to his agent. He's boxing in the hospital after the game. Ekman had to ask where he was, why he was in the hospital, which team he was playing against, and if the team had won. But despite his concussion, he still returned the week later to lead the Cowboys to victory in the Super Bowl. The next meeting between these two is the 1994 conference game. Again, and this was the second time they had three straight seasons where they played each other versus. And even though the Cowboys had a 451-294 yards, advantage difference in offensive yards, the 49ers converted three turnovers into 21 points in the first quarter. San Francisco corner, back Eric Davis intercepted Troy Ekman's pass, plowing right through the intended target, which was Kevin Williams as he snatted the ball out of the air to return into a 44-yard touchdown. On the next Dallas possession, Davis stripped the ball away from receiver Michael Irving and fell a defensive back Tim McDonald recovered it on the Dallas 39, setting up a 29-yard touchdown pass from Young to running back Ricky Waters, who alluded several Cowboys defenders. High step in his way down the sideline on route to the goal line in a spectacular sure-bought fashion. Williams then fumbled the insurance kick-off when hit by 49ers running back Adam Walker. San Francisco kick a dope brain, recovered the ball, and then the Cowboys' 35-yard line. Then Young went back to work and converted a Ferdinand 1 with a 2-yard sneak, and then thrown 14-yard pass to receiver John Taylor. On the next player, Young ran the ball down yards to the 1-yard line, and everyone in back William Floyd took the ball to the end zone. From there, to give his team a 21-0 lead with 7 minutes and 33 seconds left in the first quarter. On this time, Dallas was able to respond, driving 62 yards in eight players and converting a third and 23 situation with a 44-yard touchdown from Eggman to Irving, making the score 21-7, going into the second quarter. Then after forcing the punt, Dallas drove to the third and 10 situation on the 49ers' 12-yard line. The Cowboys tried to fill San Francisco with a draw player by Emmett Smith, but it was tackled after a gain of two yards. Mr. 27-yard-filled goal on the next player. The 49ers drove 64 yards in 11 players, including a 10-yard catch by a tight end. Brent Jones on a fourth and three to the 34-yard line, which was converted for the field goal. But Dallas counted with a 62-yard drive in which Eggman completed passes to Joe Novak for gains of 15 and 19 yards on the way to a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Smith. Closing the gap to 24-14 in the closing minutes of the first half, Eggman threw three straight in completions and a 23-yard punt by the Cowboys. John Jett gave San Francisco the ball on the Dallas 49 with 30 seconds left. Two cannons by Floyd gained 11 yards and then Jung threw a 28-yard touchdown completion to all-pro wide receiver Jay Rice, who made a diving catch into the back left corner of the end zone with eight seconds left to go in the first half, making the score 31-14. In the third quarter, Walker fuckered up a opening kick to Dallas Corner back day of Thomas, recovering on the 49ers' 25-yard line, aided by a personal foul penalty against linebacker Ricky Jackson. Dallas drove 25 yards in seven players to score on a Smith's 1-yard touchdown run. However, the 49ers stomped back. With a 10-yard play, a 70-yard drive that ended with Jung's 3-yard rushing touchdown, then Dion Saunders ended the Cowboys' next drive with an interception. San Francisco ended up punting. This kick pinned Dallas back into the 11-yard line in the final quarter. Dallas finished 89-yard 14-player with Troy Erkmann's 10-yard pass and touchdown to Ervin. Couldn't have scored a 38-28. But could not score again. Smith will compile 74 yards in two touchdowns. Departed during that drive, with an injured hamstring. The Cowboys had their two more drives, both of which resulted in turnovers on downs. And at one point, the Dallas coach, Barry Switzer, furious at Saunders, was not called for passing the field and stormed under the field, but bumped into an official while he was arguing, which resulted in a 15-yard penalty against the Cowboys. Erkmann was sacked by defensive end Tim Harlesson on the fourth down. The next player, although Erkmann broke the NFC championship game record with 380 passing yards, and Ervin also broke an NFC championship game record with 192 receiving yards. Ultimately, it was the first quarter turnovers where they got 21 points. There was just too much to overcome. See, it was the seventh-post season meeting between these two, and Dallas had won five. And the 49ers had won two at this point. The rivalry went to be called after that earlier for a good few years. Up until about 2021, when both teams made the playoffs but were matched up against each other in the wildcard round. The 49ers won the game 23-17, and the two teams would meet again in 2022, the playoff divisional round. And in this divisional playoff round in 2022, following several points, the 49ers defensive back at Dimondre de Noir intercepted a pass from Dak Prescott to turn it six yards to the Cowboys 21 yard line. Brock Purdy subsequently managed to convert 3rd and 16 with a 17-yard completion to Brandon Ayuk on the Dallas 10. But the team could still not dent the end so on and had to settle for a field goal with two minutes and 16 seconds left in the first quarter. Dallas responded by moving the ball 79 yards in 17 players, the longest of being an 18-yard completion from Prescott to Noah Brown. He later finished off with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Durr Dalton Schultz, giving the Cowboys a 6-3 lead after there. After Brett Meyer's extra point was blocked by Samsung Ibukum. The 49ers managed to tie the game after driving 41 yards in 12 players and taking advantage of a 15-yard penalty against Dallas and a 17-yard reception by Deebo Samuel. Scottin on the, sorry, Bergen. Scottin on Gold's 47-yard field goal. Dallas took the ball back and drove to the 49ers 18-yard line, only to lose to an interception by linebacker Fred Warner, who returned its 16 yards to his own 28. Purdy then completed a 10-yard pass to Samuel and a 21-yard pass to Joanne Jennings, setting up for a 50-yard field goal to give the team a 9-6 lead in the last play of the half. Dallas had to punt on the rope and drive over the third quarter, but Calvin Joseph forced a fumble from Bretonner, Ray Ray McLeod, and Damon Clark recovered it for the Cowboys on the San Francisco 21-yard line. This led to another field goal, which meant the game was tied 9-9. Following a few more puns, San Francisco retook the lead with a 14-player 76-yard possession. The highlight of the drive was a 30-yard completion from Purdy to George Kill, who had a full arm extended and grabbed the tip of the ball by bouncing the ball off his own helmet before securing it for the catch. Christian McCarthy finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, giving the team a 16-9 lead for the first player of the fourth quarter. Calvin determined to kick off 44 yards to the Dallas 42. From there, Prescott had three completions to CD-LAM for 29 yards to set up a 43-yard field goal to make the score 16-12. San Francisco went on a 14-player 64-yard drive with Purdy completing a 17-yard pass to Kill, while Elijah Mitchell carried the ball for eight times and 26 yards. Gold's 28-yard field goal put the team back up to seven points with three minutes and eight seconds left on the clock. The 49ers defense took over from that point and first forced a punt and then later stopped Dallas at the wrong 32. That was enough for the San Francisco 49ers to beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-12 in the game. In a year, it was Brock Purdy's storybook season as he continued as he won his seventh consecutive start and became the first rookie quarterback to lead his team to a conference championship game since Mark Sanchez in the 2009 season. So there we have the conference games really. There we have the conference championship games really for the 49ers and the Cowboys. Altogether, these two have had a total meeting of 40 games that have played and the 49ers just edged it with 20 wins and the Cowboys have 19 wins and there's been one tie. The postseason record goes to the Cowboys, which is five and four. And when you look at the credentials of both of these teams, you have NFC championships between pair of them, the 16, eight for the 49ers, eight for the Cowboys. Cowboys won it in 1970, '71, '75, '77, '78, '92, and '93, and '95. The 49ers won it in '81, '84, '88, '89, '94, 2012, 2019, and more recently, the '2023. Super Bowl titles both of five each. Cowboys as in 1971, '77, '92, '93, and '95, and the 49ers have '81, '84, '88, '89, and '94. The largest victory for the Cowboys came in '59 to '14 in '90, and the largest victory for the 49ers was '42 to '10 in '2023. Current win streak is the 49ers winner by three. Then we have the Cowboys versus the 49ers. There's still words more. You could go on about this. I could go on for hours about this rivalry. There's just so many good games, so many good points. There's a lot of high-profile games, so there's a lot of championship NFC championship games on the line against these two teams, and they're Super Bowl games. That's basically what it is, really. They need to beat these rival to get to the Super Bowl, and, you know, the Cowboys slightly come out on top there, really, when you think about it, but it's very easy to say that the Cowboys had the edge early on, and then after the '90s, the others went to shit, and the 49ers have slowly creeped them back into it now, where they're obviously looking like the contenders. So I'd like to thank you for listening to this episode. It's just starting to kick off in quite a tough way through. So, yeah. Yeah, like to say I'd like to thank you for listening to this episode and there will be a news of what we've got planned coming up. Please go over it if you use Twitch or you're on Twitch. Go over to Twitch and find us on there. Give us a follow under the name Grim_Riffer. I think that's where it is. If you type in Grim_Riffer, it'd be like a purple, like just kill it and hold the football. If you give us a like on that, I'll be sort of streaming a little bit while I'm getting all everything set up, and then once I get it all set up properly, because I don't want to do this half-assed, once I've got it set up properly, I'll then be doing a football function takeover at least once a week, possibly two times a week, where I'll be streaming the NCAA game and also the new modern when it comes out. And if you just want to jump in and have games against me or anything that you know we can think of, maybe even start a little league on there, you know, divide one night a week to it. I'm not sure what nights they're going to be yet, but I'm going to try and get it so it doesn't interfere with a lot of what's going on. You know, I'm not going to like do it on a first night. You know, when there's a game, I'm not going to do that on this day. I'll be doing like a Wednesday or something. Yeah, I'll figure out what day is going to work out best for everyone near the time that I'm getting this released. And also when I come to do the international games, I am going to be recording the podcast while I'm on Twitch doing a watch party. So if you don't want to watch the game now, you haven't got access to watch the game, maybe you've got access to Twitch. Just come in, pop in, I'll be there on there watching the game going through it. And in between the quarters, I'll be pressing record and recording my piece for the episode that I'll be sending to Mike. So with that being said, I hope you have rest of good week. I'll be back next week with another traditional rivalry, S3, conference rivalry, which one, yeah, I don't know, not sure. I've got a list. I've got like five or six. These already planned out, but I only need four. So I'll just be picking which one I think I'll slot in at the right time. So I hope everyone has a good week. I will speak to you next week. So just remember, piece is free and stay flat. (upbeat music)
