Good morning and welcome to Simply Politics from China. It's Monday, August 5th. On today's show, an advisor reveals that the Chinese richest people have run this year with over 15,200 Hong Kong reversing the inferiority, but only 6% of Xingzhou. Plus, a political action committee supported by Musk is being investigated for suspected illegal collection of voters. This coverage and more, up next. I'm David, and you're listening to Simply Politics from China. We start off with a look at migration trends among high net worth individuals. According to data from an international investment immigration consulting company, political uncertainty and strict pandemic prevention measures have led to a significant migration of high net worth individuals from Hong Kong in the past five years. Despite a predicted reversal of this trend this year, Hong Kong's attractiveness still falls short when compared to Singapore. Meanwhile, mainland China, which has seen the largest number of wealthy individuals migrating out, is expected to see a further increase in this trend. Compared to delve deeper into this, is our correspondent, Michael. Can you tell us more about these findings? Certainly, David. The data comes from Henley and Partners, an international investment immigration consulting company. They define high net worth individuals as those with liquid assets of $1 million or more. Their data shows that nearly 10,000 such individuals have migrated from Hong Kong in the past five years. That's an average annual number 4.6 times higher than before the anti-extradition bill movement. That's quite a significant increase. What's the situation expected to be like this year? Henley and Partners predict that the trend of wealthy individuals leaving Hong Kong is likely to reverse this year with a net inflow of 200 wealthy individuals. This is partly due to the Hong Kong government restarting investment immigration this year and the intention of executives from mainland Chinese tech companies including Huawei to move to Hong Kong. And how does this compare to Singapore? Even with this predicted reversal, Hong Kong's attractiveness is still not on par with Singapore. The net increase in the number of wealthy individuals in Hong Kong is estimated to be only about 6% of that in Singapore, which has strengthened its scrutiny. What about mainland China? How is the situation there? Disneyland China, which has seen the largest number of wealthy individuals migrating out, is expected to see the situation worsen this year. It's estimated that 15,200 wealthy individuals will leave the country this year. Thanks for the update on China's political landscape, Michael. Shifting our focus to the US now, a political action committee, or PAC, backed by billionaire Elon Musk is under investigation by the Michigan Secretary of State's office. The committee, known as the pro-Trump America PAC, is suspected of potentially violating state law by collecting voter information. Here to discuss this further is James, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you tell us more about this investigation? Certainly, David. The pro-Trump America PAC, which Musk has stated he created and funded, has been obtaining detailed voter information from residents in Michigan and other battleground states. This information was collected through the Register to Vote section on the committee's website. What is the Michigan Secretary of State's office saying about this? Michigan Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, has stated that while the America PAC is a federal political action committee, her department is reviewing their activities to determine if there are any violations of state law. Any potential violations will be referred to the Michigan Attorney General's office as appropriate. What could be the potential implications of this investigation? Well, if the committee is found to have violated state law, it could face legal consequences. This could also potentially impact the reputation and public perception of Elon Musk, given his stated involvement in the creation and funding of the PAC. However, it's important to note that the investigation is still ongoing and no conclusions have been reached yet. Thanks for the update on that situation, James. Shifting our focus now to the Olympics in Paris, France, where in the midst of the ongoing events, Hong Kong fencer Vivian Kong Manwai, who won the Women's APA gold medal, has announced her retirement from her full-time fencing career. This has sparked discussions not only about the impact on the Hong Kong fencing team, but also about her political stance. Here to discuss this further is Bella, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you tell us more about this development? Certainly, David. Vivian Kong Manwai, who won a gold medal on the first day of the Paris Olympics, announced her retirement on her social media platform. The 30-year-old expressed gratitude for being able to focus on fencing for nearly 20 years, and after completing her third Olympic journey, she decided to bid farewell to her career as a full-time fencing athlete. What has been the reaction to her retirement? The head coach of the Hong Kong fencing team, Zhengzhou Kong, expressed regret about Kong's decision, believing that it will definitely have an impact on the fencing team. However, he remains optimistic about the development of Hong Kong's fencing. On the other hand, netizens are more focused on Kong's political stance, which she revealed after winning the gold. What are her plans after retirement? Kong looks forward to new career developments that will allow her to learn and grow, equip herself, and give back to Hong Kong. She plans to use the prize money given by the Jockey Club to gold medalists to establish a social enterprise or charitable foundation to teach children to learn fencing and share the joy of winning gold medals. Thanks for the update from China, Bella. Turning our attention to U.S. politics, the Democratic Party has begun voting to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as their 2024 presidential candidate. She will be competing against former Republican President Donald Trump for a new four-year term in the White House in the November election. Here to discuss this further is Abby, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you tell us more about this development? Certainly, David. Nearly 4,000 Democratic activists and politicians have submitted signatures supporting Harris as the five-day electronic voting began. Harris is expected to name her vice presidential running mate in the coming days and then hold a series of rallies in several political battleground states that both she and Trump need to win in order to secure the presidency. What led to Harris being nominated? The loyal Democratic supporters who voted to nominate Harris were initially selected in state primaries and caucuses earlier this year, where they voted to support President Joe Biden's renomination. However, when Biden faltered in a debate with Trump in late June and ended his campaign last month to support Harris instead, party supporters quickly rallied behind her candidacy. No other major challengers contested her nomination. What does this mean for the Democratic Party? The Democratic National Committee has stated that Harris won signature support from 99 percent of Democratic delegates. Jamie Harrison, the Democratic National Committee chair, said that the party is embracing this unprecedented moment with a transparent Democratic and orderly process, uniting behind a candidate with a strong record. Harris will become the first black and South Asian woman to secure a major U.S. party's presidential nomination. How do things look for the upcoming election? With less than 100 days until the November 5th election, polls across the U.S. and in key states show Harris and Trump in a close race, it's certainly going to be an election to watch. Thanks for the insights, Abby. That development certainly seems significant. And with that, we wrap up our stories for today. Thanks for listening to Simply Politics from China. We'll see you back here tomorrow. [MUSIC] [BLANK_AUDIO]
