Tony Gwen Jr. Together in our Odyssey Palace Studios today, a full four hour show. Frank Marchese is today's fill in for the lengthening lengthy vacation time of Matt Scravey. I'm shocked it took me that long to mess up. I have to go right to the scoreboard right now, Tony. Before we do anything, scoreboard says Oaks North golf course walking plus 92 degree heat one. Chris Elo zero played this morning and I am wiped out wiped out. I got to tell you the heat dominated you the heat one comfortably. Yeah, yeah, I've like I finished over an hour and a half ago, but been drinking like straight through just sucking down the water. I feel like I've run a marathon or something. So and out of half, it really isn't that long ago, by the way, buddy. You played 18? Yeah. Yeah. That's not that long ago. Yeah. Yeah. Had a good time played. Okay. But how'd you if I say how'd you hit it hit? Okay. Chipped terrible. Pudded good. But that, you know, the first shot was good. The second and third were terrible. And then I scrambled on the greens. But yeah, I'm tired. I don't know why. Have no energy whatsoever. But the good news is Frank Marchese has set up a big show for us today. We got a lot to talk about, including the Padres finally figuring out the riddle. That is the Rockies. Yeah. My goodness. It took them long enough. But they finally got it done. A Saturday night victory of three to two, then yesterday, putting the hammer down as they buried the Rockies bullpen and one going away 10 to two to take the series. And ultimately, that's kind of what you need to keep doing. If you want to get where you're going, Tony. Yeah. And I don't know that this isn't surprising to me, but the hero of the game Saturday night, really, if you had to pick a pick a guy, probably would have been Martine Perez. And if you had to pick one yesterday to probably would have been David Peralta. Yeah. And that just goes in line with what's been happening all year long. Everybody that AJ Peralta has brought in here has contributed in one way or another. And that is why even though so many of you out there want to live your lives as AJ Peralta haters, and I can't get you to change your mind. The fact of the matter is this year, he really probably has done his best job. Now it won't be final until the season's final. But just about everybody he's picked up, Tony has come through. And that happened this weekend again. Yeah. And and every time there's been some question marks behind said player and they've all risen to the occasion, man. And I think that's what's enjoyable about watching this team is that a, as you mentioned, you don't know where it's going to come from. I mean, everybody, most people would be lying if they said on what was that today is Monday. So on Saturday, yeah, that they were excited and confident, pretty confident Martine Perez is going to the mound. We're finally going to beat the Rockies. There's no question about it. Right. And nobody thought that. Right. And all he did was go out there and go six innings, three hits, one run, no walks, seven, seven punches. Yeah, that was the key. No walks. It was in command. The entire way gave up the early home run. And the Rockies starter, Tanner Gordon, when he's good, you know, hitter for four and he was good. And then finally, the Padres got to him just enough to win that ball game. But it took until the Rockies bullpen came in, you know, in the seventh inning to get the big two run rally and win the game. But you know, look, real quick, funny, funny little anecdote. Rockies win game one. I didn't get a chance to go down and see buddy. And so I went down the following day and I'm just checking in on him and, you know, asking him about his team as I do most managers that I get a chance to talk to. And yeah, he was like, you know, basically, you know, you guys saw our best guys yesterday and we're going to see how it goes today. I mean, he has no lefty in his bullpen at all. And he has a bunch of righties who couldn't get me out. A ton of righties at all struggling with command and every one of them, even the ones that pitched well the night before have had issues at time. But what you saw, and I think you kind of alluded to it when you came on, the Padres finally figured out a way to kind of slay the Rockies. It felt like in yesterday's game when they finally started to kick it open that the Rockies had finally been like, all right, yeah, we, we, we, we, we jumped on long enough with you long enough. Now we have to give way. Yeah, that's what yesterday's game felt like. And so they roll into the off day and listen, there's some, not that it has mattered for the Padres, right? Because it seems like they've done their best work against some of the better pitchers in this league, but they're going to miss Paul Skeens in this next goal around. Can't break anybody's heart. No, not at all. And again, this is a another complete road trip home stand where they took care of business again. And now they're, they're one game away from being 10 games over 500. Yeah, that's up to me. We talked about that on what was that Friday? We talked about it on Friday, but about a month ago, we never thought we'd ever get near it. No, no, I think we were, we were content doing the, the over 500 under 500. Right. And we were content in a lot of ways because the rest of the wild card was content doing it that way. Now all of a sudden, you know, Diamond Padres are eight and two in their last 10, you know, Wells was eight and two, the Diamondbacks are eight and two, you know, who seven and three, the Giants are seven and three in that time period. So everybody's winning games right now. And you kind of have to right now because that's the way the flow is going right now. Yeah, the Padres have opened up the smallest margin in the wild card race. I think they got a couple of games worth the breathing room right now, but not a whole lot. The Mets lost a couple over the weekend. But yeah, it's, you know, it's paramount to keep winning. And you talk about, I think it's lucky. I mean, it just is, I mean, to miss Paul Skeens, not only this series, but they're going to have 90% chance going to miss them the next time around to when they come to San Diego, which might sell a ticket or two, but the Padres don't need somebody to sell tickets. They're selling enough of them on their own. I mean, the crowds, Tony are incredible. Yeah. I mean, we've come to just, you know, like, they had 41,000 yesterday. That is actually a sellout, but that was still 6,000 less than they were having during the Dodger Games. Right. That was, that was weak sauce compared to the 47, 5, 5, 9, yeah, 46, 9, 9, 7, 44, 3, 9, 3, 44, 0, 2, 9, and 41, 8, 2, 8 to cap off that. That was the homestead. That was the first two were Dodgers. Last three were rocked. Yeah. What was it a little hot for you guys yesterday? Only 41,000 came out. It was awesome. It was definitely toasty. I don't know what it was, but that's, that's incredible. I mean, the crowds have just been amazing and the Padres are rewarding them. You know, one of the things that has not gone unnoticed by guys like you and I, I know Tony, because we watch stuff like this, making plays on defense and go to the Saturday night game, as well as Martin Perez pitches. Manny Machado makes two unbelievable plays. One of them was with help from Jake Cronorth on the tag, but those were two huge plays in that game. I mean, the Doyle gets on base to lead off the ninth inning. He's, he's one of their fastest runners. He can steal a bag. You never know what he can do to come around and tie that game, but Manny makes some plays and I, there was a stat yesterday I heard on the TV. I think it was yesterday, but the Padres have only given up one unearned run in the last three and a half weeks. That's crazy. I wonder what coincides with their good record over the last three and a half weeks, Tony. You already know what the answer is. Yeah. You make plays. Don't give up freebies. You win games. It's, it's so funny. We look at batting averages and slugging and ERA. Just make the plays you need to make and it can help you win a bunch of games. Manny went nine for 19 by my count on that homestead with damage. And, and as I said, and I'll keep saying it as Manny goes when he goes. Yeah, he goes. Yeah. It's not a coincidence that in the, the situations, I think it wasn't, it wasn't the homestead before the break, but it was the homestead, the road trip through Texas, right? And then this one and each of those series times where the Padres took care of business at home and on a road following, Manny Machado has been as probably their best hitter. Well, you have a 12 and three stretch before the all-star break, then you had a limp in one and six come right back with 11 and three. Yeah. So 11, three, 11 and three. Look at Manny's numbers in that time. And those two stretches. They're, they're, they're like MVP type stuff. Audrey's playing great baseball. Certainly right now, as mentioned, day off today into Pittsburgh, they go tomorrow. Dylan Cease is scheduled, although nothing was in the paper today. Michael King, maybe on Wednesday. I think the Padres rotation still in a little flux right now with his King injury, but I mean, Martin Perez gets it done. Waldron yesterday, his knuckle ball yesterday was so good that Kyle Higashyoka almost had no chance to catch it. He struggled through the first inning or so trying to, you know, almost had no chance trying to calibrate because that knuckle ball did was doing something different literally every time it came out of hand. We saw at one time go left and hit my man in the knee. Yeah. And then the next time go right and have my, I can't remember who was in completely swung nowhere near where that baseball was. And then it just went to the backstop. I mean, the old Bob Euchre line, wait till it stops rolling and pick it up. That's the only way you could get it. Yeah. Waldron continues, you know, into the sixth inning yesterday. What a, what a pleasure it might be for Mike Schult right now to just be able to go out there in the sixth inning. And if he feels the need, you know, 80 pitches, 90 pitches with these starting pitchers, make sure they stay fresh. But he's got so many guys, he can go to in his bullpen now. Just show by the way, I mean, they're making quick work too. I mean, the Perez night, Adam's those 13 pitches in his inning, Scott through 12 and Suarez through nine. Yeah. I mean, they're not messing around. No, they're not. I mean, the following day in the Waldron game, Morty home, who went and ending in a 30 through 21 pitches, the strata through six and Yuki through 10. Yeah. I mean, they're clearly there's a, there is a confidence right now flowing through this team and it's hitting all elements, offense, defense, pitching, starting pitching, relievers. It's going well right now. And everybody's picking up everybody's doing something. Everybody's doing something, you know, it will be Michael King Wednesday, according to Sammy Lev. Sammy Lev says Michael King, we'll get the call cease Tuesday. Sammy Lev, Sammy Lev's going to go Wednesday. We are feeling good. Michael King Wednesday, TBD on Thursday. We are feeling good. Padres into Pittsburgh. We got the day off. We might even open up the phone lines today. Tony, I don't know if it's feeling that good today. I'm feeling well, I'm feeling tired actually. I'm going to let some of the callers do some of the work today, but I it's probably been a while since a lot of you get to talk to Tony. So we might, especially at the bottom of the sour open up, see what's on your mind. Padres just your thoughts on, you know, how things are going and how, you know, why they're going this way and how good you're feeling about things. So, you know, stick around 833 280973. Keep your mind open or eyes open for that. Padres take two out of three from the Rockies. They go four and one on the home stand and all is good in Padre land. Currently the Met you know Frank here is a big Met guy. He's a Met fan so the Met Game is on. Yeah but the Met season was over long ago. Oh it was. If you ask Frank he gave up in April. He did. I remember talking to him in April he was like it's over done. And then and then grimace happened and then grimace. Oh yes. I hope they see us turn the team into high school musical and then we showed a dog. Yeah I started playing right around that time whether it was grimace or Mr. Iglesias being a pop star whatever you want to call it. It has been good luck for the Mets but I think it's about all come crashing down right. You had you had the starter. You had your starter. One of your best starters go down for the year. Pulled in Aaron Rodgers was here for five seconds and then Adios. He was here and then he wasn't that fast and then they are in the midst of one of the most brutal road trips with a makeup game splashed in between. I think we talked about it. They started where they were just West Anaheim. They were in Anaheim. Played three games there. Mr. We're supposed to have a day off today. No that day. That day I've got to take. So they had to now fly from the bay all the way to Mr. To St. Louis. They're just for one game. They're just going to stop in. Soon as this game is over they'll head back West to Colorado. Yeah right. They got three games there and then they'll head to the Northwest up in Seattle before charging it all the way back across the United States to get back home where I hope they get to stay for a little while. I'm sure what their schedule looks like. You know what that means? What does that mean? A lot of Delta airline miles. A lot of airline miles. Today. Today. Honestly use airline miles. They don't get any miles. I can guarantee that. No they're just using a Delta plane maybe. But that's about it. But yeah this is one of the teams that is in contention with the pods right now for the wild card. So no one over here on this side is going to feel too sorry for them. I guess part in all of us Frank while we were in for the Cardinals today. Right now the Mets are a little closer to the Padres. Two games behind the Cardinals are three and a half behind. So it's a red bird day as they get underway. It looks so hot there too right away. My man was just sweating BB's. It's the first inning. Don't be walking 18 holes carrying your bag guys. Bryce Bryce Miller talked a little bit about something. I think we've all been craving and we've all started to see from his Padre club the consistency element and in his article in the Union Tribune he highlights a bunch of different things. But the thing that stood out to me is the many different ways the Padres are winning these games. Right. I mean yesterday they did quite a bit before that game blew open. Or excuse me the night before when they had Martine on the mound they played a little bit of a small ball. They had manufactured their way to that win. You know a sack bump put two runners in scoring position. They get those to a sack fly later in that game both of which came from young Jackson Merrill. Jackson Merrill bundered on his own. Yeah as well Saturday night. Of course and you know when he came up in that situation I think it was a one one ball game Tony. There was in second nobody out. I mean I thought nothing ball game. I thought to myself this is a really good time for a bunt. I know that we're not allowed to bun anymore. Yeah the analytics say don't do it. But to me when you can move two runners over with a bunt. No outs by the way. When nobody out. Yeah then I always think it's a really good move. The Padres did it again yesterday with Hassan Kim and at first he was ruled safe and then they overturned it. But if they still got the runners a second and third and ended up scoring a run in that inning you know I just think it's smart baseball and obviously Jackson Merrill thought it was smart baseball. But I think more than anything you know Jackson Merrill bunning in that situation shows me Tony that Mike Schilt you know and these guys feel very comfortable with each other right. I mean I know we're into August but how many guys would just go ahead and do something like that on their own if they didn't feel pretty good with their manager. Again I said this during the game yesterday you in Manny talks about it a lot. The scoreboard would tell you what to do. Padres had done nothing against Gordon all game long. Right. They come up in that that was a third time through and it's first and second no outs and keep in mind they've done nothing all game long. Are you going to keep trying the same thing? You know with the with the hopes that it changes he he elected not to on his own he gets the bun down and let's not forget the execution part. He got it down. Yeah he does. And then the very next guy came through with a with a knock at that point. And so that's kind of when you get late in ball games you got to start looking at the game different. Now early in the game of course you know you certainly probably want them swinging away there. But you had gotten to a point in a game where it felt like that was a shifting moment. Right. You don't come through here. You are you guaranteed to get another opportunity like this. You hadn't created any to that point. And so I just I just like the idea that these guys play with their the feel right. I like that they're comfortable enough to be able to do it. A lot of managers would scare the daylights out of you and you wouldn't know what quite to do even if you thought the bump was the right way. I guess I just because I've been around Mike should I don't even think of him in that of him in that light because I think he he would want that. I mean he's not going to put it on. He's going to leave it to you hand but he wants you to be able to put the team in a position to win. That's what they've been doing quite a bit here lately. I think Toddy sounds like is getting closer. Joe certainly has started the process to get closer and those could be big. I mean that's virtually a deadline move for for the Padres. Considering how long both guys have been out at this point pitched three shut out innings at Lake Elson or over the weekend and came out of it. Fine. As far as we know. I don't know if I've heard anything about it today. But yeah, that's a great sign. You get must grow back. You get Fernando Tatis back. Those are two bigger additions than any team made at the trade deadline. No doubt. So, you know, let's hope that that all comes around. It's all it's all going glowingly going glowingly. Don't ever try to say that after you walked 18 holes again. The mouth is tired too. The mouth is a little exhausted but try it. Yeah, it's it's really nice and you know consistency. We talked about it on on Thursday or Friday Tony that they've had three consecutive winning months. Something they did not have more than one of last year. Yeah. And you know it was 13 and nine in July. It was you know like 15 and 13 before that. And it was like 14 and 13. I mean you know it's just a little at a time but it's adding up. And that's that's the whole idea behind winning series. This are fifth consecutive series that they've won. Right. And regardless of how it looks. If you go two of three, two of three, one of three, two of three, a sweep, you keep stacking those numbers together. You start to have separation. And right now the Padres are experiencing. And I'm not saying separation in terms of the standings. I'm saying separation in terms of wins and losses. And Padres are for the first time starting to experience. I don't I don't think the Padres have been this many games over 500. Maybe since that 20, 21 seasons, one is pretty good. Nine is pretty good. It's certainly the high watermark this year. And you know we haven't talked about it yet. But I know it's in the back of the minds of some of the people out there. You know Dodgers are you know they scuffled but got through Oakland all right this weekend. But now they're coming home. They got Philadelphia big series coming in tonight. Both teams scuffling. Both teams are scuffling a little. So you know the Phillies are going to bring it now Freddy Freeman. And I hate to say this way because it just is good news that he's back. I'm sorry even if you're out there hoping he was going to stay away a little longer. I'm really happy it is back because it means you know his son is hopefully feeling a little better and his wife and his family are doing better. And that's all really important. And that's a good thing. So he's going to be back with the team. But Phillies Dodgers that could go any which way this week. And maybe the Padres will pick up a little more ground on the Dodgers. Still only four and a half there. And that sounds like that's that's going to change here pretty quickly in terms of that lineup and team they've had. There's a bunch of guys. Matter of fact Dave Roberts talking about it in the athletic was basically like there are a lot of guys who are virtually playing every day that are being exposed right now because they're not every day but they're not every day players. And so you know that's what the Dodgers thrive on. They thrive on being able to match up and put guys in position to where they have success. That does not mean that they can run them out there for an everyday basis and and have the same type of success. And so when then I'm bets you just don't you can't see yeah months you can't replace that kind of a production you just don't and they're experiencing it now. So big series there. Hopefully Philly goes in there and Rex shop because uh Rex shop. That'd be good. That'd be good for the positive. I mean this positive I take care of business that Pittsburgh pirate team is certainly not one you can go in there and play with because they play and it kind of in a similar fashion to the Padres in terms of they play all nine innings. They got a few comeback this year when when they've been down. So Padres with the off day today they'll get kicked off here tomorrow Dylan Cease versus Bailey falter. And yes he's a left-hander. So we'll see how we overcame that a long time ago now Tony. We'll see how that goes. Let's uh let's get the break. When we come back I think we'll open up the phone lines a little bit here from you guys 8-3-3. Yeah what's on the mind out there. 2-8-8-0-9-7-3 how are you feeling about your Padres right now? I'm more going to Chris honey. Oh hey we're invited to the Johnson summer pool party this Saturday. I said we'd bring our famous potato salad. Tony Gwen Jr. and Mr. Frank. A big frank is in here today celebrating as Pete Alonzo rumbles home on a wild pitch. Let's take a 1-0 lead over St. Louis in that makeup game. This afternoon at Bush Stadium, we're going to take some phone calls here. An opportunity for you to just kind of whatever's on your mind with the Padres. We're not going to lead you in any particular direction. Team seems to be playing well. I'm going to give you a little preview Tony. My best, my best guess is that since things are going so well, fewer people will call. You know what I mean? Like if they lost two out of three to the Rockies and we said, hey, give us a call. You know, what's on your mind? And then it would be like, but you know, that's how, you know, sometimes you don't you want to enjoy the good times. You don't have as much to call in and just tell us how happy you are. And whether you plan to stay that way, 833-288-0973, if you want to get in on some phone calls here. But I have one other thing to get to. What's that? I did golf today and I am exhausted. But after my round of golf, I went on my phone and I went on my email and it was like Christmas morning. How so? You know why? You know why. Oh, yeah. You're the one that sent the email. I do know why. Fantasy football, possibly. Here's what it says. Your ESPN Fantasy Football League has been reactivated. Yeah. Oh, man. Welcome to the world. It is a happy time. It's funny. You get a little walk. Way to go, Tony. You get a little off time. You could start to kind of peek into things like that. Yes. So excited. Reactivated our Odyssey Fantasy Football League. You have a new like our sixth year. We have a new ownership. It involved Sammy Levitt. Sammy Levitt is going to step into this year, huh? The Odyssey League. So he'll be able to anybody. I mean, we all honestly, Tony, all we off the team up this year, all 11 players, we have to make a pact because of Scravey wins again. That's going to be the end of all of this. It's already bad enough that he won once. But we can chalk that up to just, you know, magical luck. But if he wins again, it was so much better when he was the laughing stock of a league. He was to like the first five years. That is guys got a championship. He's killing himself. His own confidence has just changed since he won the championship. I mean, you know, the way, I mean, I guarantee you he's going to change his name to the champions here. Because he I love that. I guarantee he'll change his team name to the champions here. He likes to not only win the championship, but he likes to make sure everyone is aware that he won the championship, 100. So anyway, yeah, I was really happy about that. Very excited. Next Christmas morning will be when a draft date gets announced. And I know that you'll be working. We'll all be working on that because that's that's hard actually to put together with our league. Yes, because of your traveling and everything else. But we'll figure that out. But yeah, fantasy football is kind of around the corner. And I know we're not the only ones are excited about that. All right, Rolando is the first phone call up on the board today. Thanks for calling Rolando. How are you feeling about these Padres about now? Great. First of all, it's an honor to talk to you Tony. I grew up watching your dad, Mr. Padre at Jack Murphy Stadium. But I think that this team is operating on all cylinders. Um, pitching defense, offense, relief. There's a good chemistry, good rhythm right now. I just want to ask you guys, um, Jackson Merrill, I mean, uh, action Jackson every time he gets to happen. And then he has a good, a good glove out there playing first year at center field. A converted shortstop. But, um, is there any way we could, uh, in our season of signed Jackson Merrill to, um, to a contract and get him cheap while while we still can? Good question. Interesting question. First, uh, the honors mind. I appreciate the kind words. I think, uh, in terms of Jackson action Jackson, I'd like that. I'm on some. I'm still at that. I'm still in that for sure. Um, in terms of action Jackson, I think, of course, the Padres would love to sign him, but it's not necessarily the right timing. We know some of the financial constraints that the Padres have had at least this year in terms of trying to stay under that luxury tax threshold. Um, I'm not sure that this year, this off season will be the year that they try. Uh, maybe after a year or two, what was it? How much, how many, how many years do you get control of a guy, Tony? It's like three or six before you become a free agent. So they've got a while to get something like that. He's not even are eligible. He can't, he really can't make a peep at this point. No, I mean, in his age, so the one of the things that they did in the, uh, new collective bargaining, because the one thing the players were asking for was to cut it down from six years, right? Let us be free agents earlier. But what they did was they incentivized so that if you win some of these awards as a rookie or second year player, you're, you're in some of the upper echelon of, of the, of the awards, you can get, uh, bonuses for that now. That wasn't the case before before you could, you could win MVP, your rookie year and it's like, nice job. You're $5,000. Come on, best. See you next year. So to answer your question, I just, I think the podcast was obviously they, he's, he's their guy. They drafted them. So it's certainly in their best interest to, to keep him here for as long as they can. They're just no need to do it right now. Yeah. And I think, uh, it's a good, it's a good question. Uh, Rolando, but the thing is also you've got Jerkson profile who you're probably going to want to try to try to keep. I don't know, you know, if you're going to be able to afford to squeeze him in, House on Kim is a free agent. Um, there's one other, Dylan Cease is going to be, you know, a free agent or, you know, so, it's got one more year. I think, okay. One more. But there's a lot of guys, Michael, I'm trying to remember there was one other guy in there that was really good that they got to be, you know, it's, you know, they're going to have to make an offer to to keep. And it's just not going to be easy to keep everybody. Yeah. And so Merrill, like, if it was another year where there was nobody up for a contract, maybe that'd be great. Right. But I, yeah, I don't think it'll work this time. Uh, let's go to Jaime back to back Chula Vista. Cuz I'm by me. Hi, honey. Hey, Hey, guys. Uh, yeah, you know what? Uh, really good times, really happy times. Uh, the season was kind of average back and forth, but it seems like things are looking in the right direction. You know, and it feels good because there's a lot of pieces that are working. Everybody's involved in this. Yeah. And we're still missing a few pieces, you know, the pieces in back yet, mushroom, who knows the Darvish, but I've been a fan of that with the kids back in the 70s. And I used to always say, we'll get them next year or whatever. Something feels different about this year. Don't want to talk about it too much because I want to think it's just like when when Steve's got the no hitter, I was telling my wife, we can't talk about it. You got to just sit next to me. You can't move because we're in, when we got the one in Texas, when much girl got it, she sat with me and I said, if you can't talk about it, you got to just sit there and just, you know, make it work. And I was really happy. And I hope I have a little bit of time with you guys. It was very emotional for me because I lost my dad a year ago. Yeah. And hodering with everything, you know, and and he didn't get to see there's no hitter. And it's something that I would have loved to share with him again. But it's like when we win this thing, which I like to wait a talk. Yeah. It's going to be tough. It's going to be tough for a lot of reasons for my, but you know, I had that bond with my father for forever as a kid. And like, it's going to be extra special, even though he's not with me, but then I get to share it because it hit. Ah, that's great. Yeah. That's great. Jaime. And let me tell you something, Jaime, if slash when the Padres win their World Series, pretty much all of us that are alive are going to be able to share it with somebody who's no longer here. I mean, honestly, and it's a great sentiment. But, you know, it's been a long time. So a lot of people waited and never got to see it. And we'll have to share it with those those people. I think I'm good call though, buddy. I think I mean, um, hit on something, right? I think it does feel a little different. And I think part of the reason it feels like the way is because, um, hey, they're on a heater. They're playing. They're playing pretty good. So it feels different right now, but it even in their wins, it seems like there's, it's a, such a, it's a team victory. Like there's so, there's a different guy, as you say, Chris, seemingly doing it every other night. I think Bogart, I think Bogart said it in Bryce's article that it feels different because seemingly someone different is contributing in a major way to help win a game. It's nice to be able to rely on Manny. It's nice to be able to rely on whoever it is. You know, you want to say Fernando when he comes back or it's nice to be able to just give the ball to a Dylan cease and sit back and watch him win the game for you. But it's a lot nicer when you can have contributions from everywhere. And they've been doing this all season. This isn't the first weekend. This is happened. All season. I mean, Martin Perez being a hero of a game Saturday night, Tony said it. Nobody was excited about him making that start. Everybody was like crossing their fingers and knees and legs and toes and everything. And the guy goes out and just, you know, looked fantastic. And you know, yesterday it's Peralta, who I found to be one of the best guys when we had him on our interview. He was awesome, wasn't he? He was great. And I was really, you know, became a bigger David Peralta fan then. But he wins it defense and offense. Oh, by the way, can we just, I know we won the game so we can make a little fun of that kid in left field. What kid? The kid who caught the ball until the jerks and profile couldn't catch it. So I saw, I saw a breakdown of this. Did we see a breakdown of this on, on, on Twitter? Okay. And I, I assumed the idea was that jerks and would have caught it if the kid wasn't there. I can't say he would have, but he would have, he would have at least had the kid not caught it. We, we, maybe it's possibility. No, you're saying no. I don't, I'm not saying no, or yes, because I couldn't see for my, the kid was so happy with himself and everyone else in the stadium wanted him, you know, strangling. I don't know why there's not a not now one of them people that was mad if they were in the same position would have been like, well, let me get out of the way, let this ball. None of them would have done that. I know. Well, hey, look, they almost lynched up, pulled our apartment in Chicago many years ago, even though Bartman did what every other human being on the planet would have done. That's true. But I'm just saying, the ball was in the stand. It was not like, it's not like he reached over. Like, no, he didn't. Bartman was, it was borderline. I mean, when we got a closer view at Louis, realize, okay, he didn't reach over, but it was close. I know, I know, but the kid was, the kid was much too proud of himself. Good, good job, kid. I'm happy for you, man. They won 10 to 10. So it didn't matter too much, but they lost two to one. Really, really quick, before we go to the next call to go back to the first caller, Kim has a mutual contract extension for next year, $7 million, a mutual option. King is done after next year, Higashiyoka's done after this year, Scott's done after this year, Perez is done after this year, Profa is done after this year, Sees is done after next year, yeah, Solano and Peralta are both done after this year and a rise is next year. All right. So there's a lot to do. And that's, that's normal. I mean, those guys are on the team, the Solanos, the Peraltas are on the team because they're here to fill the void for right now. And it's like a two way kind of deal, right? You get an opportunity to raise your value, you can help our team in the, in the process of doing. So that's kind of part of the program here. But yeah, I mean, listen, in terms of Jackson minute, it'll come in due time. His, his, his opportunity will come. Remember, I think it was Todd. He's what? Third season that they had finally got to the deal with his third or second or the middle of his second or third season. He got the big deal. We went to prop playoffs. Yeah, I think it was 21. No, maybe it was 20. I can't remember one of them. One of them years he came in. I know one person who doesn't care about it. Who's that? Jackson Merrill. No, he, that's exactly right. He's just exactly right. Like he wants to win. His agent will say, Hey, you want to do think we should get a new contract to go? I don't know. Just let me know. That's exactly what he would say. I know that just, you know, you do with that. I'm a, I'm a play base. I just keep playing here and I'll make it, make it as easy on you as I can. Wayne and San Diego. Thanks for calling in Wayne. What's up, Wayne? Hello. Hey, how's you guys doing? We're doing good. Hey, Tony, I, I'm going to first off say something to you that I used to play basketball in the late 70s with your dad and against your dad and pick up games in Peterson gym. I'm an ex basketball player from locally from Hewlett and we've done the greatest of times. He's an awesome guy. And every time I hear you on the radio now, I feel like, you know, it's your dad's voice. But the number one thing I want to mention to you is I'm so happy that you are the number one analyst in my opinion on the radio and all, unless you guys seven or eight hours a day and I agree with you almost a hundred percent of the time and everyone else. I appreciate it. Of course, today, I don't so much do that. The problem is the fact that I'm more of a positive person than a negative person and these people that are worried about every loss, the world's ending and every victory, I mean, you keep it level headed and feel just like manager Mike Schilt. And I'm going to tell you, that guy, he makes me feel all the more comfortable. And I really believe that everything that Schilt has said all along through this entire year, hey, we're winning series and wherever else is freaking out, especially on the earlier shows, you know, unbelievable. But you keep it level headed and I am glued to you guys every day. And I tell my brother, I tell everybody to listen to you guys. And it's because you guys are telling the truth, especially you Tony met them against you, Mr. Elo, because I love you too. But me and Tony, he keeps that ship level headed all the time. Oh, he keeps me very much. Thank you, sir. I appreciate you guys. And I like I said, I drive in my car about eight hours a day doing delivery as an old man and having a good old time. Listen, you guys were yuck it up every day. Thank you, sir, appreciate the kind words way. Very nice. I will say one thing that about paying pickup basketball with your dad. Did you ever play pickup basketball with your dad? I did. He was good. Like, you know, he could spot you anywhere. And he always, when I played with him, which is a few times, he made me way better because he put the ball, you know, we talk about this, you make a pass that leads a guy to a basket. That was something your dad had an innate ability to do playing basketball. He'd give you the ball. You'd catch it and it would almost make you score the basket. He put it put you in position. So good. He he was pretty. I've seen some pickup games get pretty intense with my dad before. He was very serious about the game gamesmanship part. Thank you for the kind words way. We appreciate it. Thank you for the callers that called in. We may do this a little bit later on in the show up next. Little Daily Gambit. Come here. I believe, right? Daily Gambit. And you know, who knows where this is going today. It's a wide open day. So stay close to your phone because like Tony said, we may get some more calls in for sure. Gwen and Chris continues. But Gwen and Chris are just getting started. Sports talkin' in. Your hosts Tony Gwen Jr. Top five characters, sporty. Get over here. And Chris Ello. In the audio, audio, audio, oh my goodness gracious. Can we start the show over again please? It's time to get you up to speed on all things sports. Yes, yes, yes. With plenty of nonsense in between. Oh look, here comes our fearless producer. Gwen and Chris starts right now on 97th Ray the fan. Into the three o'clock hour we go daily gambit up next as we uh sift our way through this four hour show. Tony Gwen Jr. Chris Ello Frank Marchese in for Matthew Scrabie who is uh spending some time in Iowa, I believe. You know where he is today, Tony? Where's he at today? Where he was scheduled to be today. Where's that? As a matter of fact, I think we should just call him right now and see how he's doing. I believe he's at Riggly Field. Oh that's right. I believe he's going to be at Riggly Field tonight. Seeing the Cubs and the twins is very excited about that. We should maybe send him a text or something. Make sure he's doing all right. Speaking of the NL central, I thought I saved this one for you over the weekend. This player has an active 21 inning scoreless streak. He's allowed just one run in 33 innings over his last five starts and he has the third lowest batting average against among qualified starters. Can you guess what that might be? I can't. It's your favorite, Hunter Green. Hunter Green is I knew he would do this as soon as I got him off my fantasy team. He is on what they call a heater. Blake Snell is another guy that seems to be pitching awfully well here all of a sudden. So and he had to eat. You know what? A guy pitched a no hitter and he was under siege. Like people were like all over his case. You know, you've never pitched past the seventh inning before. I know. Yeah, you know what? I was aware of that. Thank you. How about me celebrating the fact that I got a no hitter tonight? Oh no. I want to talk about the fact he'd never passed the seventh inning before. That's how they do my man Blake, man. It was like incredulous. Hey, it's funny. The one of the games I did on TV in June randomly like a week later, I get a text on my phone from Blake and I forget how it came up. I think Don and I were talking about, I think it was about walking hitters on purpose and I made the point that, you know, because Don made the point that Blake walked a lot of dudes. I was like, yeah, but I don't know he was walking them on purpose though. And so I got a text from him and he said, uh, he said, hitters that hitters that hit him well. I walk on purpose. The others, it just happens. I said, well, well, he said, you got your ears to the ground. I didn't, I didn't think he was listening. He said, just because I'm gone, doesn't mean I'm not watching the, the team, but he said San Diego, basically he was saying San Diego was a very special place to him. So he's still watching everything that goes down here. And so happened to be watching him throw that no hitter other day. He completes it. I think everybody was pretty excited for him in the booth. And then I'm watching him do the post game interview. And I'm watching these guys come from behind and they got the big, uh, ice chest. Yeah. And I'm like, yeah, this isn't going to end well. Usually you got the, the, the regular kind of drinking chest that everybody has to gatorade a chest, right? This was like the ones you stick bottles of water in the long one. And man, I thought they were going to concuss them and they knocked, they almost knocked Blake out trying to, trying to dump the water on them. And the, the lid came down and cracked him on his head. And you could see in his face, he wanted to be upset, but he was also doing like a live interview. So he kind of had to like play it off like it didn't bother him. But I sent him a text, I said, I hope your head is all right, man. That didn't look like it was too comfortable. Yeah. And look cold. It didn't look a little chilly. And Cincinnati though, I'm sure it probably felt good knowing how thick and humid that place gets. All right, we got a daily gambit coming your way. Let's get to it. Do you like money? I think about money. Do you like money without doing anything? Do you want to make money while watching sports? I think Washington is immortal luck. Washington! If you answer yes, this is your segment. Just don't blame us when you lose. Nothing is ever your fault. It's okay. Take it. All right, Frank's gonna do the daily gambit today, from what I understand. Frank, you got a bunch of stuff for us to take a look at? I got a couple of things here for you guys. Yeah, because we didn't do anything on, um, on Friday. That's, that's what I was waiting for. Yeah, we didn't, uh, I'm like, uh, we didn't do anything. I did notice that, uh, Scrabie in the big five on Friday had a big thing about, uh, or no Adam did, about whether, uh, we were gonna pick Novak Djokovic or Alcaraz in the gold medal final. Both Tony and I picked Alcaraz. We were both our own. Yeah, Djokovic won it. One is gold medal, not bad. Um, the golf was incredible. Scotty Sheffler, number one player in the world. She's a 62. My guy. Your former, uh, playing partner. That's right. She's a 62 to beat everybody. Like everyone was in the shop. We was leading into going into the final round, trying to make it back to back gold medals, but, um, the golf was good too. Anyway, all right. So yeah, so we didn't really have much to, uh, much going on in the pick department Friday. Don't really have much here, especially when the whole sports will stop because of the Olympics. Yeah. Uh, we're going to focus mainly on over unders here today. Uh, first one is going to be baseball Boston Red Sox coming in at 59 and 51 versus the Kansas City Royals who are 63 and 50 over under for this game is nine and a half. Uh, Red Sox are three and two in their last five. The Royals are four and one in their last five, but here's why I picked this game. The Red Sox on the road are 32 and 23. The Royals at home are 36 and 22. So, uh, Red Sox have been good on the road this year. A good road team against a good home team. Yeah. Red Sox is a good one. So what are we doing? Nine and a half. Nine and a half. Who's pitching in the ball game, Frank? Uh, who is pitching? We need James Paxton makes, I believe, his first star has a Red and Brady Singer who is eight and six, but a two, eight, eight. This is an under then. The one thing I forgot to write down was the pitch. Well, that's not important. When you're doing an over under, well, you know, I'm gonna say under. All right. So, uh, Tony, Chris is going under Tony. I'm gonna say under as well. Under. You see, I can't win unless I go over. So are you gonna try to win? I'll go under. Yeah. All right. So, the second one will be the Philadelphia Phillies. This is another good matchup. 66 and 45. Aranola on the mound there for the Phillies with, uh, against the L.A. Dodgers in L.A. 65 and 47 facing Tyler Glass. Now, I looked that up while I was getting ridiculed for the last one. Over under. Over under is seven, seven and a half run, seven point five. Phillies are two and eight in their last 10. They just broke a six game losing streak yesterday in Seattle. The Dodgers are five and five in their last 10 and just two out of three. Neither of them have and that's three oh eight. So usually by this time, lineups are starting to get posted. Neither of these teams have a lineup up yet. And so, you know, Dodgers could be getting some guys back today. Freddie Freeman is rumored to be coming back this week, if not tonight. So that means the Dodgers got to make moves to get guys off of the roster or send them down so that others can now be on. I'm gonna go. What was the number? Seven point five, seven and a half. And it's no against last now, right? Four three. Yeah, I'll take that. I'll take the under on that. You take under. Yeah. Glass now has been very mediocre of late. If even mediocre is fair, he's the one that's been worse than mediocre. Nola's been hit and miss. I'll go over. I I am going to take the over as well on this one. I have a feeling that if someone's going to get knocked around, it's it's probably going to be Nola just because of how bad the Phillies have been recently. But also, if there's a team that's going to bust out and really have a big offensive game, it's it's probably the I hope both of you guys are wrong and it's under so I can win. All right. So to the Olympics, US women's soccer will take on Germany tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. on the USA Network and peacock. US has the US women have won four of their last five meetings against Germany, including a four to one win last Saturday, not this most recent Saturday, the last one, over under on goals here two and a half. Chris, what are we three and four nationally ranked here? I think they're right next to you. Yeah. Soccer? Yes. Women's. Yeah. Two and a half. Two and a half, two and a half under soccer, isn't it? Yeah. They went to two now. Okay, Tony. I mean, Tony's daughter's not playing under Tony's daughters in the lineup. I might think it over, but I must say, say over. I'm taking over as well that the US women can really really play. You know this? Trinity, Trinity Robbins gold. That was a beautiful thing. That was a beautiful goal. No question about that. So sticking with women's soccer, Brazil versus Spain. Again, it's an over under of two and a half. That game is tomorrow at 12 p.m. on e exclamation point and peacock. Spain is two, one and two against Brazil in their last five meetings, including a two nil win. Yes, on Wednesday explanation, Mark. I was like, what? Did I have to see it? Okay, I got you. The clinic, a two nil win on Wednesday over Brazil. So Tony, Spain or Brazil over under over I haven't seen these two teams play. So I'm gonna say under. Okay, we'll go with the standard. You have to go. I always go under. Say you can't go. I was thinking about it just for fun, but I'm going to take you over just to be different. Yeah, good. I'm channeling my inner scraping and I feel like he would have done that US men's basketball. This is the last one against Brazil, US men are three and oh, Brazil is one and two. This game will be tomorrow on Pete, but this is an elimination game. Yes, this is a quarter final. How did Brazil get in with one and two? I guess I don't keep that close to round robin fair, but I just thought maybe you'd have to go a little bit of than one and two to make it into the knockout stage, but that's apparently not decking will be on peacock tomorrow at 1230. Brazil lost to Germany and France by 13 and 12 and they beat them. That makes sense. They're in the meddling rounds right now quarter finally. So, you know, I think USA finished with the best record, so you get to face the worst teams on your way to facing some of the tougher ones. And they just came off the win against Japan 102 to 84. US has beaten Serbia, South Sudan and Puerto Rico, each by 17 points or more. The line for this game, US is favored by 26 and a half. Take Brazil. Chris is going Brazil, Tony. And you're going under on it. I had to take a team. Half line. This is the line. You got to give 20 points or take I switched it up. Oh, we're on the line here. So I got to do what? US is favored by 26 and a half. I'll take Brazil. He's taken it too. I think they're going to win by like 20 and get to 26 and that got it. I'm going to go with Brazil as well because the US has not beaten anyone in this tournament yet by 26 and a half points. So I'm taking. I'm going to take they're getting better, though. I got it. Steve, they're playing. They're playing good. I just 20. Yeah, it's a lot of points. And apparently Durant is still going to be coming off the bench from what I just saw. Yeah, it sounds like he's going to be coming off the bench for the rest of this tournament. And that's that's all I got. I got one more game to take a look at tonight. All right. Just for fun. Okay. In Oakland tonight. Chicago White Sox looking for 21. They're trying to tie the American League record. I was going to do this, but I put it into the big five or something. All right. We'll talk about it later, but I had the game written in. I'm starting. I was starting to write it out. I'm like, I didn't know you had in the big five. We'll leave it out. We'll save the White Sox till then, but they got a chance to make some history tonight. They do not the kind of history you want to make. Not what they want to make. They could definitely make some. All right. Let's let's get to break on the other side. What we got. Let's see. Oh, we have traffic. I know that we definitely got traffic going away out, but on the way back, how about some NFL training cap update. It's about that time. Oh, we just got the fantasy balls out. Got my fantasy football league, the commissioner, reset our league today. That commissioner is Tony Gwen, Jr. And so I'm really happy with him right now, because that's a happy time to get that email to know that fantasy football is indeed right around the corner. There's really not a whole lot new in the NFL today. Maybe one note of interest, Harrison Butker is now the NFL's richest kicker. I don't really feel like getting into Harrison Butker right now, because he seems to open up a can of worms and not really in the mood. So in that one, you don't want to go that route. Not really. No, good for Harrison Butker. I'm glad he's making a lot of money. But I thought this would be fun, Tony. Since you are the fantasy football commissioner, and I think we kind of get people in the mood. I got right here, according to Mike Clay, ESPN senior writer. The top 15 picks in this year's draft, fantasy draft, fantasy draft. How many do you think you can name top 15 top 15? There are eight wide receivers and seven running backs. Jettison Jefferson. There are no, no quarterbacks in the top 15. So who'd you start with? Jefferson? Yes. He's the number five wide receiver this year, according to this. My man for the Raiders, Adams, Devon, Adams did not make it. Oh, slipping down to the number 10 wide receiver this year. I assume that's because I don't like the quarterback situation with the Raiders. Chase Jamar Chase is one of the receivers. Yes. That's correct. Mr. Hill. Tyree. Tyree Kill is one of the receivers. He's number two on a receiver list. About say, Quan, say Quan Barkley. Say quads. Say quads. Number five. His team back. AJ Green. Now with the Philadelphia Eagles, AJ Brown. You mean Brown? Yeah. AJ Brown. Yes. He is one of the colors. He's there. He's one of the wide receivers. You're doing pretty good. Missed only one so far. That's five. I don't know. You're going so fast. Like not only keeping up Christian McCaffrey. Christian McCaffrey is number. Here's how he lists Christian McCaffrey. He goes for, here's our cheat sheet for the year at this point. Number one, Christian McCaffrey. Then there is a whole nother paragraph before he even listens. List number two through eight. So, Christian McCaffrey is so far and away the number one choice that, yeah, he has his own category. I'm shocked at who the number two and three pick are overall. At least, you know, just right now, not saying they shouldn't be. Is Henry on that list? Derek Henry didn't make it. He's 24th 10 running back. Not quite. You're going top seven running backs, top eight receivers. Right now, you got the one running back. You don't have the two or three running back yet. And these guys are a little surprising. You got Barkley, who's number five? Two and three. Who do you think the next, according to this, Frank, running back, if you want, who do you think the best two running backs are behind Christian McCaffrey right now? Stop working, Frank. This is not a work show. You work on this show. What are you working for? Yeah, God, pay attention. Stop working. Man, why can't I think I know who you're next right now? I know you're going to be shocked when I tell you who the two and three running backs are. But, you know, you better know out there. You might end up with a second or third pick on your draft. You may have to take one of these guys. I can't see Derek Henry being. No, I said, you guessed him. Yeah, so far, we've got McCaffrey number one. We've got say quant number five. That's it in the running back department. I can't even think of a right back right now. How about if I give you the team? Give me the team. The number seven running back is a Ram. Oh, does that help you? No. Kyron Williams, even know who that is? I heard I knew he was good for them a little bit last year, right? Or was he a rookie? No. Kyron Williams, he was a he scored some touchdowns last year. Number six running back is a lion. Boy, I bet he is. Oh, Montgomery. Jameer Gibbs. That's just showing how far we got to get back into the fancy month, right? I just tell somebody I have done no homework. Yeah. Number five running back is an Eagle. We said, say, Quan Barkley. Number four is a Colt. Oh, I had him last year. You got him. Didn't do you much. Didn't do Jack for me. Jack. I can't even remember his name. So mad at him, Jonathan Taylor. Jonathan Taylor. Yeah. Okay. Here's the number number three running back is a Falcon. No way. It's not. It's not the rookie from last year. Yes, but John Robinson. That's who they have. Number three and number two running back is a jet. Oh, it's the young kid. Fast kid. Gosh, what's his name, Bruce Hall. Yeah. Anyway, I think it's kind of interesting. You know, they changed so quickly, right? Top receivers in order. Number one, CD lamb. Number two, Tyree Kill. Jamar Chase. Number three. I'm on Ross, ain't Brown. And so far, I mean, as CD has just directed it up, everybody's bored now. CD lamb, yeah. So interesting. Puka Nukua is in the top 15, along with Garrett Wilson of the Jets. Every time I look up Garrett Wilson of the Jets and Aaron Rogers, the jet quarterback are screaming each other during practice. So they talked a little bit about this, both of them. Yes. And then they say there's nothing to it. They said that they actually weren't yelling at each other. Although the, although my man was upset, he wasn't upset with Aaron Rogers. Aaron Rogers was trying to play Peacemaker, apparently. He was upset with one of the DBs. There had been a little pushing and shoving, and he was kind of venting to Mr. Rogers. So same old Jets is what you said. Same old Jets. It just wasn't Aaron and my guy. Garrett Wilson, yeah. I just, I just foresee a train wreck with the Jets this year. I don't. I think this is going to work out. I think it's going to work itself out. And Aaron Rogers is going to be peaceful and peacemaker. I don't know that Aaron Rogers is going to be peaceful and tremendous or peacemaker. I don't know that that's ever been the case, but he's won a Super Bowl and a couple MVPs with chaos. So on a Super Bowl in 2010, I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's 14 years later. He still is Aaron Rogers, but he is a royal pain in the rear. You know, the best part of me. You know, the best part about that prediction is that he just made you don't need a crystal ball to decipher a disaster for the Jets. All you need is a pellet. Well, first of all, you're a New Yorker. So you go giant friends or you want to see their demise. Yeah, we have been worse than them. Yes, you guys have. We are. We just watched. I just watched the hard knocks about your team and the league. I just watched your GM completely fumble this offseason. You have been statistically, we have the least amount of wins in the NFL. And I think the last five years, I think. Good. Congratulations. You're playing yourself. I know. That's why I don't plan on watching a single second of it. You're going to watch. You're going to watch. I watched the Jets and Giants game last year and immediately took to Twitter and demanded both teams give me four hours of my life. Was the final score nine or six. Wait, how did you go about demanding that? I tweeted that to them. Of course. I said, I give me the last four hours of my life back. You guys waste the Giants and at the Jets. Yes, I did. Absolutely. Who won that game last year? Anybody remember? I don't have any idea. I could tell you everybody lost. Everyone lost. Was it just terrible game? Yes, it was. I think that I think the Jets may have won an overtime. I don't remember. All right. Very good. That's too funny. A player who's fallen the fast the longest and the farthest in fantasy football, according to this sheet, the 17th ranked running back coming into this season is now Austin Echler. He's Washington. Yeah, that's a long fall for him. He used to be the number one running back. He's with the command. He's what the command does here. Actually, I beg your pardon. He's the 31st choice. He was 17. Yeah, he's 31st. I can't. Are there 30 running backs better than Austin Echler? Barely so. All right. More going in Chris on the way. Maybe Tony says even more phone calls, 833-288-0973. We're just kind of hanging out with you today. And you're more than welcome to join us. Talk about what is the first on your mind, the start of your fantasy football league, or your happiness as a Padre fan. It's all next on 97 three the fan. Somebody said you better call Tyrone. Base is clearing double puts the Mets up five nothing in this wild card rendezvous. Fifth inning Tyrone Tyrone shoelaces. Tyrone Taylor. Tyrone Taylor. I don't know. That would be Tyrone. Tyrone. Tyrone shoelaces. I like what you did there. I know. Let's talk a little bit of Olympics as I wait a little bit as Frank and hopefully get the sound that I'm looking for. A lot of things happening. At least in the U.S. fashion, we already gone over the women's soccer team. They're into the quarterfinals against Germany. The men's basketball into the quarterfinals as well. They'll take on Brazil. Did we who ended up winning the U.S. volleyball men's it was up on TV. I didn't against Brazil. Yes. They were up to one at one point. So we'll track that score down over some assuming they won in four. Otherwise it would have been it would be about in a fifth set by now. Okay. Well, good. It's my prediction. Well, let's hope that that prediction is correct. But there has been some marvelous events. Swimming has held up held their own in terms of meddling gold meddling. But I think the show that took the cake was the 100 meter dash. That was unbelievable. That took place yesterday. It was by far one of the best races I've seen in some time. Let's go to the maybe ever. Yeah. I mean, listen, the funny thing was and it was brought to my attention by, of course, Dave Marcus. Do you remember? And I'm just Chris, I know you remember Ben Johnson. Well, yeah, when he won and you know, got caught for cheating. The score he got to win that was like nine seven. I believe it. Whatever he ran was off the charts for that day for that day. These nine that raced is probably, I think the closest thing you can get to the fastest nine men in a world. And it showed in this contest. Here's the call. There's an Olympic gold medal waiting for somebody who wants it to lose. Now Thompson starts to line up. Colin is going with it. This is close. Jim Lincoln is going to do it. Yes. He called the wrong winner. It's what he did. And he's been apologizing for it all day. Is it Lee Diffy? Lee Diffy. Yeah. You said Jamaica wanted and they didn't win it. Now it's so close. I mean, I'll say now in Lee's defense and fast in real time on the screen. You thought that you make? I did. I did. Now I was watching. What's the young man's name that won it? Oh, yeah. Lion lion lion lion lion. Yes. I was watching Lyle start to close the ground. The last what he got the first of all, he had the worst start of the nine. He was in last place through the 50 meter mark. The last 50 meters was his show. He ran it faster and a beautiful thing about the Olympics and how NBC is covering it. They have the technology to test their speed, but also tell you when guys are decelerating. Everybody except for Lyle's was decelerating the last 30 meters of that race. And that's what allowed him to literally win by what a nose. I would say less than that. I would say less than so unbelievably close. I mean, I've looked at it 50 times. You can't really see the instant where you could stop the film and go up. See his torso is touching the line and the other guys isn't. They both touched the line at the exact same time. I would say that if this would have been back in the day when you mentioned Ben Johnson, Jamaica would have won. Well, either Ben, either Jamaica would have won or they just wouldn't have been able to determine it. They would have both got gold medals. I don't want to say that yesterday. I don't think they could have determined it 25 years ago. But now they have the technology and Lyle's gets it 9.784. The other guy was 9.789. The third place guy from the US was 9.81. It wasn't like he was far behind. I think the other point you were making was Ben Johnson. His time wouldn't even have finished in the race. He wouldn't have qualified for the race. That's how far they've come. But how exciting was it? And then the shot, I mean, I know everybody's mom, but I don't know why it is. I think people like your mom Tony for some reason, but his mom looking up at the clock when his name popped up and she just went crazy. She's absolutely crazy. I don't know why I thought you're mom. But what any mom to go up and see your son's name pop up because nobody knew who won. Neither of the racers knew. They were looking up too. Like what Ben said, they all knew it was close. And that was the crazy part. Like I think we all looked to see who won who got first, which was tough. But the winner between second, third and fourth was incredibly close. Yeah. I thought that was a terrific race. I feel sorry for my man Lee Diffy because that's going to play for for quite some time. It's such an odd mistake for especially Lee to make because his day job is broadcasting IndyCar racing motocross stuff that finishes really fast, really close, odd mistake. But I know you know, especially it doesn't matter how often you do it. You're still when you're on that's on that's that's the biggest stage when you're in when your job is to talk. Yeah, you are going to make a mistake. You're gonna you're gonna feel that. That's true. But that wasn't a necessary mistake, really. It was all you have to do is say it was that's too close. He did not have to commit. He didn't. He would have been accurate. I was actually surprised. Yeah. That he did commit to it. Yeah, I I had the sound turned low enough. So I didn't hear him say what you know that the that the other guy had one. I just knew it was really close. And so I was kind of waiting with everybody else until they put it up on the board. But that was awesome. I, you know, these athletes in the, you know, the sprinting, them and the swimmers, these swimmers, I don't know how they know Tony, but when they say set and then shoot the gun or in swimming when they say set and then they did a good shot. They play the horn or whatever they do and then they go. You can't mess that up because if you delay by six 1000s of a second, then you don't win the race at the other end. Yeah, you got to be perfect on that start. That's the same for swimming because they win these races by the slimmest of margins sometimes. That's what made Lao's comeback so impressive. He got a horrific start compared to the other guy. Compared to the other guy. I mean, he was, they had still shots of him for the first 50 meters playing catch up. And then, you know, that training took over. His, his God giving gifts took over at that point. It was a tremendous race, man. I, I really, really enjoyed watching those men run. That was, that was pretty cool. That was fun. Gymnastics, Simone Biles finished with a silver in her last event. She ended up losing to a Brazilian. I think the U.S. finished with a silver and gold on our silver and bronze on the, the floor exercise. So it looks like swimming. Certainly. Gymnastics also. We've done a number on it. I mean, we've got 21 golds now. We got 78 medals. We got run away with the medals. We got 25 more than anybody in the metal department. So 20 golds. China has 21. So China. So we've closed the gap. I'm sorry. I read it wrong. China 21 and the gold medal camp. But we're leading the overall medal. It'd be nice if I could read once in a while. You did play full 18. And it's, I'm still worn out. That's my excuse for everything. I get it. It's my excuse for everything. I'll say one other race that I saw yesterday. I don't know if anybody else caught it out there. It was the bicycle road race for women, I believe. And yeah, I was women's bicycle road because they have so many races. This gal for the American was in a pack, not a pack, but in the chase duo. There was two, two cyclists out in front by like 200 yards. They'd broken away with about three miles to go. The American was in the next group with another gal. She and that gal worked together with, you know, trading off the league so that they could, you know, drag the air and whatever they do too. But the two of them worked together to catch up to the first pack with like a mile to go. So it was interesting, right? Somebody knows better than me. There's so many cyclists out there. I don't want to say the wrong thing here and look like a goofball. But she worked together with the third, the other third place gal. They caught up to the first two with about a mile to go. And then the American just put on a burst like you've never seen. And the other three were like, huh, what? Wait, where'd she go? And it was, it was over. She won the gold. Beautiful ride. Don't know her name. Sorry about that because I'm just not the cycling guy. But that was fun to watch. That had me. That definitely had my, my attention. Good job. I think I saw the U.S. came back in a, in a long distance one that they hadn't hadn't won. And forever with an epic comeback, my man like ran through like 10 people at the end to finally win the USA is doing what we typically do at these Olympics. We're getting a lot of, we're getting a lot of yells for our, for our time. I appreciate it. Yeah. You know what I think we should do right now? I think we should let the people know about what's going on in traffic right now. I think we should do. Oh, good. I do some traffic. We're back. We're saying he's wondering. I'm looking for this. I don't see it, Mr. Frank. I mean, I could do it. Yeah. Go ahead. Okay. Hey, fantasy football team owners, get ready for the draft with the reception perception, whether you're at a PPR league or not, wide outs will make or break your fantasy team. So that's why you need to list to a podcast, a specialized and wide receivers. Don't get embarrassed this season with a new tattoo that your friends pick out for you on your behalf. Listen to new episodes every Tuesday and Thursday and get ready for draft day. Follow reception perception on the free Odyssey app or wherever you find your partner. The one downer of these Olympics is we got to figure out what we're doing in three on three basketball. Have we struggled there? We struggled, mightily. Okay. Hey, I got to believe that in this no disrespect to Jimmy for dead and and Rick Barry's son. I don't know. It's not Brent. It's one of the one different other ones that's out there. They got they got beat by the Netherlands. I'm trying to figure out when to lose into the Netherlands and who I'm just saying, like what's that? I get it knocked out with that. I think they did. Yeah, they're out. They're out. No limited. No metal no metal contention. So why do no NBA players want to play in the three on three? I don't like you can't get Jalen Brown and Kawhi Leonard because you know, they got left off the other one. So that's a good question. Maybe they don't want to play through it. Maybe they just don't want to play through it. Is it going to mess up their game? Like would it mess up your game to play three on three when we're used to playing five on five? I don't think so. I don't think so. I don't think that would be a matter. I mean, we have a full on three on three league in the United States and three of those guys get some of those guys in there. I did notice that I don't know again. I don't know which Barry it was, but he was doing his father's free throw shot from like the granny shot. He was shooting like that in the three on three tournament. That's what I knew we might be in throw. That's when you thought we could be in trouble. I saw the guy in the pole vault set the all-time record in the pole vault a lot going on in pole pole vault. I like pole vault. I don't really understand how anybody grows up wanting to be a pole vaulter. Like I don't know how you get into that and how like, I know one guy who probably wants to get out of it right now. Did you see my man get eliminated? No. Did he did he have a kind of a disastrous run? So the guy. I think it was he was French, I think, right? I don't know. I know he's well known now at this point. He was he was in blue. He was feeling blue or he was feeling blue. He was in blue and then he was feeling blue. Okay. He jumped over the bar. He got over it. Cleared it. Fine. No problem. Right. All but a very specific part of him cleared the bar and that's what ended up hitting the bar and knocking it off. That was it? Yeah, that was it. He fully got his feet over his knees, his thighs, and then as it was it was clear as day because that was what happened. Yes, it was clear as day. Clear as day that that was just one problem. And you can before he even hit the pad, you can see his body just go like, I can't believe this. I can't. It's not that's usually not a problem in any other walk of life, but it was a problem at that moment. He's going to be known for a lot of other things in pole pole vaulting at this point, but it is to say it in in well form. That's that's a shame. This guy Duplantis set the record with 20 feet, six inches. Here's how remarkable you have to be to be a pole vaulting. The first vaulter ever to clear 20 feet was Sergei Boopka. He was like one of the great pole vaulters ever Soviet Union guy. He cleared it in 1991. 33 years ago. Yeah. And 33 years later, this guy got to 20 feet, six inches. They've gone six inches in 33 years. Yeah, it's a little hadn't quite had the advancement in some of the other schools, huh? And it's just slow, but he got up there and he he did it. I it's hard to follow what your guys' story was about the guy not making it. Why is how is it hard to follow? I made that is I said, no, I followed. I understood. I just said it's hard to follow it. Like I can't make it more radio friendly. That's pretty that's pretty good right there. Explaining it without explaining it. Yeah, you did good. You did well. By the way, the fact that you had to do math for 1991, I was born in 92. You're how old that makes me feel? I mean, how old is older makes you feel? That's the fact that you're not really the story I'm concerned about at this point. How old does it make us feel that you're born in 92? I'm not as old as it makes me feel to hear someone that the Olympics just won a gold medal. It was probably bored in 2015. Yeah, I mean, that's kind of the way life goes these days. Padres off today to back in action tomorrow, get a chance to see Dylan C try to pick up where this ball club left off before heading to lovely Pittsburgh. I hope my guys are enjoying their off day in the lovely city. I love Pittsburgh. I love the downtown in Pittsburgh. Yeah, yeah, beautiful, beautiful ballpark. Yeah, ball parks in a great location there. It sounds like, you know, last couple of years they've been working on the bridge. So it hasn't been, you haven't been able to go over that bridge? Yeah, you've been able to go over one of them. They had one of them kind of in its been construction on it. I think you can't drive on it. You can walk over it, but really, that's big. Driving over that bridge is one of life's little pleasures. Yeah. Now, Padres back in action, they got Pittsburgh, didn't they head to Miami before coming home for a quick three game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates? So you see a lot of the Pirates here 10 days and then the Padres will head back to Colorado for short road trips. So Padres are looking to kind of eliminate the Pirates right here. Pirates are about three games behind them. The Padres do some damage. They could knock them out of the out of the run, the running. Yeah, this hasn't been a place. The Padres have played well in here in the last few years. It feels like, I don't know. It's a whole new ball club, Tony. It is. It is very much so. Can't wait to hear more information on Tati. It's been kind of quiet in terms of his return, but we are starting to see him pop up a little bit more. So that usually means we're getting closer. Yeah, no doubt. All right, you're right. Through the three o'clock hour into the four, we got a Chris versus the fan coming up next eight, three, three, two, eight, eight, oh nine, seven, three, if you want to participate, more good and Chris on the other side. The work day is coming to an end. It is five o'clock. I will see you all tomorrow. But Gwen and Chris are just getting started. Sports talk it is. Your hosts, Tony Gwen Jr. Now, I will say the journey, and it was a journey to get to the press box. It is one of the toughest journeys I've been on. And Chris, hello. He hits two home runs every game, including a gla-- exclusion. Well, it's gonna be one of those days, huh? It's time to get you up to speed on all things sports. Yes, yes, yes. With plenty of nonsense in between. Oh, look, here comes our fearless producer. Gwen and Chris starts right now on 97th free the fan. Hey, here we go into the four o'clock hour on a Monday afternoon. Chris, hello. Tony Gwen Jr. Odyssey Palace studios here in San Diego. Padres are idle today, playing Pittsburgh tomorrow. Big Frank filling in for the vacationing Matt Scrabie, who is at Wrigley Field tonight, taking in a Cubs Twins game. I'm gonna text Greg right now. Yes, text him and see how he's getting along there. Games should be getting into waiting about an hour or so. Should we just call him like right while he's going through security? Yeah. But the most inopportune time. Try to time it. If you can do that. I was actually hoping not to talk to him at all for these six days. So if you could not call him, that'd be fine. Just text. Just get set him a text. Okay. But you know, get me a little scrapey break here. Let's see if he gets back to me. Isn't it isn't a bad thing. Don't know if you guys saw this quote. It was one of my favorites of the day. And then we're going to get into some Chris versus the fans. The quote is never lie. Never cheat. Never steal. I was raised with that lesson. I've raised my family on that lesson. And I have preached that lesson to the teams that I have coached. No one is perfect. If you stumble, you apologize and you make it right. Today, I do not apologize. I did not participate. Was not aware nor complicit in those said allegations. This might be my favorite line coming back coming up here. So it's back to work and attacking with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. Oh, I know who this is. It could only be one person. It's a hard ball. Jim Harbaugh for sure. Attacking with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. That was the dead giveaway right. That was the giveaway. Harbaugh's, you know, back under pressure again because. Yeah, let's see. I don't I guess ESPN or somebody got a got a hold of the allegations from the NCAA, another big five topic. Oh, all right. Well, we'll talk more about it. Sorry, Frank, I don't mean to steal the big five, but through the whole, the whole. Yeah, I listened to you and then I went on and did my own thing. All right, we'll talk more about that in this hour when we get to the big five. But right now, it's time for Chris versus the fans. Let's go. If you had one shot, one opportunity to take down the human almanac himself, how would he do? Now is your time. Listen, we just got it. Stangers. Now is your opportunity to win a prize. Well, I hope you know it. Jen for Chris versus the fans starts now on 97 three, the fan. So real quick, Scravey texts me back. He said, actually, I said, what are you doing? It's actually just got to wriggly. So he's just getting there. Just getting there. All right. We'll wait to see what he's saying. That would be something to show up and not have tickets, right? Yeah. The one game I went to a wriggly field, I went many years ago. I did not have tickets. I was able to purchase some outside. All right. Chris versus the fans. You got a chance to qualify for a two night stand resort world Las Vegas and two tickets to see Carrie Underwood. Oh, that's a good one. Yeah, Carrie Underwood returns to Las Vegas with her critically acclaimed production reflection. The Las Vegas residency at Resorts World Theater tickets for performances from August 14th to October 26th are on sale now at axs.com and R W Las Vegas.com. All right. Frank, you want to read the rules? Sure, I will read. You know, I got them. I got them. You sure? All right. So you have to make it through three questions. Each question will get more difficult. If you get the question right, you move on. If you get the question wrong and Chris gets the question right, you are done. If Chris gets it wrong and you get it wrong, you still move on to the next question or you could win. If it's on the finale question, if it is on the finale, I am somebody who played more than 18 holes apparently. I told you guys I was I was I told you I was a shell of a man. I came in here. You did. I didn't know it was this bad. You tried it a bit. If you are, if it's a finale of a question, it was like your brain froze for a second. Again, real quick. If you're a first time player, let us know and you'll move directly to the second question. You have a very good chance at waiting today. If Chris is this out of it real quick. Kramer says just about to walk in, but things are popping. Let's lots of stuff happening. Pretty cool. That's what it is. Things are popping popping. He's what is a Oh, no, it's a Monday. Monday night. I guess things are popping good for him. Good for sure. It is summertime. All right. Good for him. Who's our first contestant? Let's take our first contestant today. We'll be Richard in Paradise Hills. Let's go to Richard. Richard, welcome back, my man. How are you? Oh, y'all just want to get me out the way. Maybe not though. We'll find out. You know, you could win first. Here we go. First question. What country was Muhammad Ali born in? I would assume the United States of America. It was a trick question. Yes, he was born in the United States of America. Here we go. Question number two. I got that one wrong. My brothers are two. Yeah, I think you would have had trouble for the neighbors. Question number two. Ha, before show. Hey, old Tony signed with the Dodgers. He was rumored to be on a plane to what city? Montreal. Man, close. It was close. He was going to Toronto. I was just going to say, can you turn your radio down? Richard just missed it. Sorry, Richard. It was a pleasure to have Richard on. I like him. It's a good guy. Who's our next guest? All right. Next contestant. We will go with Lance in Temecula. Lance in Temecula. Lance was going on. How are you? How are we doing? We're doing well. How are you? We are well. Here we go. First question. How many players does a football team have to have on the field at one time? Nice work. It sounded like a trick question. I think Lance was worried about it. It's like it's got about 11. What am I missing here? Question number two. I don't even know how to say this question. That's gravy has in there. Well, we'll go with which Atlanta brave pitcher amassed 176 wins between 1990 and 1999. 17 points. Greg Maddox. Winner. I'm going to read you now how Scrabie wrote the question. Yeah, what a Scrabie right. Which primarily Atlanta brave pitcher amassed 176 wins between 1990 and 1999? Mm. He tried to get cute there. He's so, he's so cute. Let's, let's go to question number three. Lance for the win. Okay. Here we go. And soccer. Oh, I'm done. Uh oh. It's good for you Lance. I'm the one who could miss it. What's the difference between golden goal and silver goal? What? This is. I can't say golden goal ends the game. I think that is to him. That works. What does the silver goal do? The silver goal means they play two halves and the score at the end of the second half is when the game got so he wrote an essay. Right. It was a dissertation that he gave for the answer for that question. It's why I heard you read the question. I'm like this. You're not going to make him give the essay. Oh, he's making a give the essay answer. Give it as the answer. All right. Well, nice work. Hang on the line. Frank could get your information here on the other side. Meanwhile, we did figure out the score that U.S. Brazil volleyball game. U.S. one and four. Nice. They moved on to the semifinals, I believe. In the volleyball competition. Uh, we'll say this. Those dudes can jump. I mean, like they're they're like, I don't even know how there's a dig in in men's volleyball. Because they're shooting. They're hitting the ball straight down. Well, how about their serves? They jump and then they serve it straight down into the into the floor on the other side of the neck. It seems like it's heavy. How they are able to get under there and make a pass. Like you said, dig any kind of shot is beyond me. I don't know how volleyball. I don't know how the women do it when I watch them play. And then the men do it at, you know, twice the pace. Yeah. Yeah, volleyball's one of those sports that I had never been able to figure out and how to play or do. And I'm always remarked, amazed by it. I'll tell you another one that's really got me. Me and the Ant-Man. They asked the Ant-Man what is favorite. Favorite of his? Not ping pong because that's not ping pong. That's table tennis. That is table tennis. The Ant-Man loved it. And I do too. Do you watch them? I, I can't fathom. Could you, do you think you could even return to serve? Absolutely. Like 43 spins on it before it gets to you. It's, it's funny. I, you know, those guys at the, at Petco play volleyball, play table tennis a lot. Right. You said it wrong. That is a good player. The Ant-Man was hit to rice plays much like my dad. Very finesse spins and all that. But I, I think it was watching Korea, Japan, the other day, the championship. Okay. The Korean girl ended up winning. Yeah. And just watching like the intensity of the kind of back and forth play. Yeah. First of all, they don't hold the racket like, or the big, the paddle like any, like any of us hold it. They hold it like on the flat side. They don't even use the actual handle. It looked like. And the spins they're putting on this wall is ridiculous. Yeah. Well, it's not, it's not, nothing I'm familiar with. I mean, I played ping pong. I've never played table tennis like that. No, that's a, it's a whole different, different monster. There, there's something I recommend actually, if you're bored, or not even if you're bored, how about if you're just kind of interested in it, go to YouTube and call up amazing table tennis shots. Have you seen some of the ones they've had like that have been tweeted out, guys running around the entire board, shooting it over their top? I mean, some of the shots, they may, they're pretty good. It's a really tiny table. They have, they make it seem like it's a much bigger table than it actually is. You know, it's the space behind them. And they all have a bunch of space behind them. But it's just this little table that they have to contend with. All right. That does it for Chris versus the fans. Let's get to break. On the other side, we're going to Chris, here's some traffic. 4/20 on the clock, Tony Gwen Jr. Chris, solo Frank Marchese. Trying to locate this, uh, Olympics on peacock right now. One of the main, one of the other streaming networks that you can probably use my peacock accounts since I, uh, I canceled it 12 months ago, but they'll never let me cancel it. I mean, I don't understand that, but that's how that worked. My wife told me like, I canceled it right after the playoff game that I was forced to purchase it for. And they're still charging you? And yeah, four months later, my wife goes, uh, I just paid the peacock bill. And I go, I canceled that right after the game was over. As a matter of fact, it was such a bad game for Miami fans that I probably canceled it during the game. Yeah, peacock had a way of keeping you, keeping you locked in, you know, it's kind of a sneaky move. It's like, we're going to make this difficult for them to figure out how to get out of this almost impossible, not, not, not easy. We're going to make it so that you can't talk to anybody. You're going to have to just wait on us to get back to you whenever we get ready to. Yeah, and we'll never cancel you. So we get to continue sending you a bill, whether you watch us or not. Yeah, peacock, my favorite streaming service. Now, um, in college football today, uh, Frank, if I'm not mistaken, we had the rankings come out today. Coaches poll came out to the coach is called that Paul Chris, let's remind. I want you to remind everybody how we feel about these particular rating. Well, they got it. They got to call it the sports information director, Paul, first of all, right? Because the coaches hardly vote. Most not most, but I know many coaches just give the ballot to their media relations director and say, please fill it out for me and turn it in. I don't have time for this. But since we don't have a writer's poll yet, the coaches pull is all we got. Right. And so it's, you know, it's the one time of the year where I care about the coaches, Paul today. Right. And you know, we often will end you'll hear us eventually say this poll makes no sense because all it does is confuse everybody when one of these 25 teams in here right now comes shows up on the first day and they look like they don't belong. Right. This is part of the reason why they may not have been 25 to begin with. No, in the top 25 to begin with. Not only that, Tony, nine of the teams in the 25 are in the SEC. Well, we know that's that's how is that? I mean, but how is it possible that they can all be that, you know, they can all be in the top 25. They're going to play each other and beat each other, but they'll never fall out of the pole. No, because in this, this starting point right here matters. That's right. You know, because a team like, I don't know, say like an organ. They got a little more leeway. Yeah, they do early because of where they're starting. It's a big deal now because correct me if I'm wrong. And I might be wrong. It was a new year. It would be the first time. But the playoff now, you obviously, if you win your conference, you are in that's four teams. There's four power conferences. That's four. Then there's going to be hopefully a fifth team from all of the other, you know, loud conferences, whatever they call us the, you know, the, I don't even know the other six. Yeah, the normal conferences, that's the one the Aztecs are in and others. And then, but the other seven spots are all at large selections, but they're going to be based on where teams rank in the polls. Right. So you're right. Oregon starts ahead of, let's just say, ahead of Missouri, Oregon's three Missouri's 11. If they both have the exact same season and finish, what is it? 11 and two and, you know, win the same and lose the same, etc. Oregon will finish ahead of Missouri because they started ahead of Missouri, right. And they'll get into the playoff and Missouri won't. And there's really not, not that the world is ever fair, but that's really, really not fair. But that's how it's still going to happen. And I know people think that with 12 teams, we're finally going to settle all of the issues in college football. We're just opening it up for more complaining from the teams that finished 13, 14, 15 and 16. They're all going to want to get in. That is without a doubt. And nobody's looking at that. Nope. Everybody thinks, Oh, finally, finally, we got a playoff. We got 12 teams. There'll be no arguments. No, there'll be more arguments. This is going to be more way more. We'll be talking about 20 something playoff games before you know. Yeah. And pretty soon the, with the NCAA basketball they got 64. And now they have 68. And guess what? The 69th team is mad. So they talk about moving it to 96. It never matters how many the next team's always going to be mad. Right. Who's ever not? He's ever that team is now, if we're being honest, they're not changing this because teams are mad. They're changing this because there's a lot more. There's a point. I can't believe they didn't do this a lot earlier. I mean, honestly, it just took them a lot. College football is so stupid. They couldn't even get out of their way, their own way to make more money and some more dollars. That's how dumb college football is, but they finally, you know, got, got to figure it out enough to have a playoff. So it'll be fun. But yeah, you're right. I mean, there's going to be seven at large teams and the eighth, ninth, and tenth at large teams are going to be livid. Yeah. Just like last year, Florida state was livid. Let it get into the four. They had one loss. They didn't get in. They didn't have any losses. Right. They didn't have any. I don't think they had any. Frank, you said something to me before we started to show the offer that I think makes a lot of sense. As we get ready. Yeah. Frank submits this to me. Good. He's obviously a video game player like myself. Okay. College football came out here like two weeks ago now. Yeah, about two weeks ago, it's a hit. Okay. And I think, as Frank said to me before the show, it's going to bring more attention to college football because he was like, I don't know if it's the video game, but I'm ready and excited. I haven't felt like that. It'll vary in like at least the last couple of years. So because you're playing with players from these teams that are going to be upcoming now the catch looking forward to the catch for me is I have a personal rule with video games and sports games that I can't start you until I finish what other season I'm playing in. So right now I'm in the show. Oh, I can't really play the college game. It's not college football season just yet. Maybe it's time you change your role. I don't know. I can't. I've been this is a long story. I gotta finish my season. And there's only one person who makes the determination on that rule. That's you. That's me. That's right. You are judge and jury judge, jury, executioner, whatever you go. I'm everything. That's it. But it's, it's, it's got you, it's got you ready for the season issue. And I've got a 10 and two San Diego State playing. That's what that's. That's what I like to touch here. Ten and two. I got a 10 and two San Diego State. Are you cheating for us, Frank? Or is it? He was actually telling me that he's disappointing. He hasn't found the slip the slip the money to the guy button on the video game. He can't have figured it out. Yeah, there's there's no blatantly commit and a recruiting violation button on there. Yeah, there isn't the hardball button. No, the hardball button exercise. By the way, we didn't even give you the the top 25 for the preseason. Yeah, we might as well after all the talk, tell you who's in the thing. Georgia is number one, of course. Yeah, the Ohio State Buckeyes at two. Right. Oregon three, Texas four, Alabama five. By the way, real quick note on Alabama. Their lowest ranking to start a season since 2009. The last 15 years, they've been at least in the top four, we're about to find out how much of of an issue it's going to be not happening. No, no, no, no, Nick. Yeah, no, Nick, six through 10. Old Miss Notre Dame, Michigan Penn State, Florida State at 10. Okay. 10 through 15 or 11 through 15 Missouri LSU Utah Clemson, Tennessee. That's followed by, you know what makes me mad about Utah? Just a little bit. They run them out. And if we had the money that they had with the Pac 12 of rather taken us all those years ago, just because of the recruiting thing, you know what it is? As as what I heard was that USC UCLA just would have never let us in. Never let it happen. Never let it happen. I know. Utah was in the right geographical spot because Utah is not a better necessarily than us. Not even close. Utah now has the resources to be 13th in the nation because they played in the Pac 12. Now they're in the big 12, right? Big 12. I can't keep track. They moved into another one. I think they go to the big 10 or big 12. I feel like they went to big 12. I feel like they did too. It's just crazy that, you know, Utah is now a player on the national scene and we got so left behind back then. The whole timing for said instance and in this most recent one, has this been bad luck? Bad luck. Bad luck. Where was I at? Tennessee Utah Clemson, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Oklahoma State. I'm a man. The U. Oklahoma State is my automatic cheering against the guy who was let the drunk kid off the hook and said he to understand why he drank. Because I've done it. We've all done it before. We've all done it all the time. That's a leader, the kind of leadership you want there at Oklahoma State. The U at 19 AM at 20 and then 21 through 25 goes Arizona, NC State, USC, Kansas, Iowa. You'll notice that other than Notre Dame, which is a independent, not a single team from a non-power for conference gets the light of day. Not a single one, not a Boise State or an SMU to be found anywhere. You got a Liberty got 15 votes to be in the top 25, but that's as close as you got. Liberty did. That's good. All right. Utah, Utah is in the big 12, but according to Google, they're still in the pack 12. Yeah, well, Google's a little laggy there. A little late Google. All right. Let's get to break. Big five. When we come back, Frank gets the star in this next big five. We're going to Chris on the other side. Hi, going to Chris. Kind of a kind of a lazy Monday afternoon, you know. I've been tired all day long. Padres aren't playing today. Tony's in studio. We're hanging scrapies at Wrigley Field. He sent some pictures out already. He sent in pictures of his exciting afternoon at Wrigley, where he's going to see the Cubs play the twins. And I always call them that because that's when Uncle Teddy called them. Let's win because he had twins. Oh, and it stressed him out every time he saw that name, twins. Uncle Teddy. Did you hear the Uncle Teddy? Co-hosted with Ben? I did. He's very airway. I just hear they're an hour to one day. I don't know what day it was, but that's awesome. Uncle Ted, love to hear that. Always, always love to hear Uncle Ted's voice. The best. He comes and visits with us every once in a while before the game. We get to, yeah, we get to, you know, reggae regales you. I was trying to come up with a clean word to use. We get to talk in a lot of trash while we're in the same room. It's a lot of fun. Yeah. But yeah, I did get to see. I didn't get to listen to the show though. I didn't find out till after the fact that he was co-hosting with Ben. Uncle Theodore, still without a no-hitter to his credit. And man, my man frustrates him, retires and two of them happen like, and then Donor Silla tweets out that he's now done five. I don't think Donor Silla was popping off about it. He was just making note of it, you know, that this is cool that I've got to do five no-hitters. Ted got zero. All right. We missed you, Ted, but I'm glad to hear that he was on the air with Ben last week. That's good. Very cool. All right, we're going to get to the big five. Top five sports stories of the day. According to Frank Marchese, he was filling in for Scrabie today. But first, there's a check of traffic. It's that time of the show. When we check on the latest in sports, only the most important topics and questions are brought to light. Stop what you're doing and listen. These new stories will astound and amaze you. The one, the only. Oh my God. Who the hell cares? The big five starts 97-3, the fan. All righty. So five sports stories today, like two or three of which Chris has already tried to swipe out from under me, but we'll, uh, they tried to vulture your stories, man. We will, uh, we'll get to it right now. We'll get it going. All right. So we spend so much time on these shows discussing historically good. So how about we give equal time to historically bad? The Chicago White Sox are in the midst of a historic run, one that sees them one lost shy of the AL record for most consecutive losses and three shy of the all time record. After losing 13 to 7 to the twins yesterday, the Sox now sit at 20 consecutive losses. They have not won a game since game one of a double header on July 10th. Wow. Also against Minnesota. That puts it into perspective though. July 10th was a ways ago and sit at an overall record of 27 and 87. Yeah. They start a three game series in Oakland tonight, who to them may as well be the 2001 Seattle Mariners before a day off and then coming back home for a weekend series against the Cubs. Chris. Yeah. Am I the jerk for wanting this losing streak to continue so they could take the 62 Mets off the hook for the one hundred you're not the jerk at all. I mean, if my team, you know, had the had the had the kind of the note, the record that I'm the worst team of all time, I'd like a little company in that category. Now, the Mets of 62, they never lost 20 in a row. No, the record there is held by the Phillies of 19, I believe 61. Yes. It was the year before the Mets. Phillies were managed by a game named Gene Mock, who'd go on and manage the Angels to some success, actually, in the 70s and 80s. But Gene Mock's Phillies lost 23 in a row. I don't know. No, you can't do it. From the outside looking in though, you feel like you're so close, you might as well lose the next three. Get to 23, then come back to Chicago, go to Wrigley Field. No, they're home for the Cubs. Yes, I'm sorry. Come back home, have the Cubs come in and then set the record against the Cubs 24. Miles will make some history. Something you can tell your kids. It's a lot more fun than telling them that you lost 20 in a row and didn't quite get the record. I was on one of the worst teams of all time. I forget it, dad. I want to hear about it if you're on the worst team. Yeah, not one of. You got to be the worst. 20 is not good. Some of their, I feel so bad for some of their pitchers, though. I mean, not that they're any good, but you look at some of their records, right? Saroka's Owen 10, Chris Flexin is 2 and 11. None of those are going to look good. I mean, they can't look good because the team never wins a game. Anyway, Tony, how excited are you to be going there in September? Last road trip. We don't go there. They come next. Oh, yeah, that's right. We went there next year. That's next year. Last year coming in here. Last homestand again. I mean, it's become, it's the last three years. It's been a weird thing now where we end with the White Sox, whether it be at home or on the road. So, and it seems out of place to me a little bit. Yeah, I mean, this just goes back to this whole stupid new schedule that we have now. Yes. So we got to play them at some point. I want to play the division more. I don't mind the new schedule. It's how they've implemented it to where like you're done with the Dodgers in June. That's a problem. You got to take games away if you're going to play everybody. No, I know. But then parse them out to where you're playing like only the division in September or something like that. White Sox, I guess they could do that. White Sox called up a kid from from the minor leagues. McDonald's, maybe. Kai Bush. He's making his major league debut tonight. And all he's being asked to do is stop a 20-game losing streak. There might be more pressure on this kid than if you were starting game one of the World Series. If I just go out there, have fun. Don't worry about it. Come on. It's only history on the line. Right. Number four. All righty. So number four not to take away from the sweep of valet last week. Sounds like you're about to take away the sweep. But the Dodgers team we saw to close out last month was not their 18. That's fair. Big players like rookie bets are sidelined with injury. But one of the biggest names was out for a very, very different reason. Freddie Freeman had been placed on the family emergency list on July 25th with no details really known in a joint social media post yesterday. Freddie and his wife Chelsea stated that their three year old son Maximus quote went into full body paralysis and was rushed to the hospital to quote reinforce his lungs. This is linked to a rare neurological disorder called Julianne Bar Syndrome. Maximus is recovering and has a quote long road ahead. Freddie could return to the Dodgers this week. Possibly tonight. The Dodgers have not put out their lineup just yet. The Phillies have the Dodgers have not still. Yes. Well, it's common soon because they just DFA Kevin Bezio. So they're making the roster moves necessary to get everybody there. Tony, as a father, I'm sure you don't want to imagine what that family is going through right now with their three year old son. Yeah. No, I don't. I can't imagine playing under those circumstances. It was hard for me to play in 14 when my dad was was real sick. I can't imagine what it's like to have your baby, your three year old son. Yeah. Be going through something this traumatic. It kind of feels so awful because the three year old and it's like so powerless to do anything about it. You can't give him a pep talk. Really, you know, you just pray. That's all you can do. And I mean, he played I think a few games while they were trying to figure out what was going on and then he eventually got so bad that he had to take a leave. Yeah, no, I can't imagine having it to play and focus the way you have to at the big league level when nothing's going on outside of your life. So it'll be says this is it in some ways, I can guess this could be kind of a getaway for a little bit for just for a few hours before he has to kind of refocus and, you know, lock it on his son. The part that really got me was having to reinforce his lungs. I mean, they had to remove a ventilator. Yeah, eventually had to remove a breathing tube. I mean, that's this isn't an adult again. This is a three year old. So you can only imagine the type of pain that was just to go through that part of what he's dealing with. Absolutely. All right. Another heartwarming story that happened over the weekend surrounded the NFL's Hall of Fame game that took place between the Houston Texans and a team that is known as the Bears. During the Hall of Fame and Schreiman ceremony, Stephen McMichael was shown surrounded by his teammates from the legendary 85 Bears defense and as his Hall of Fame bust was unveiled in his home in Homer Glen, Illinois. Mongo has been bedridden from battling ALS over the last three years and has lost the ability to speak. Chris Berman relayed a message from McMichael stating, quote, I don't want ALS to be my legacy. What I did on the field, that's my legacy. Pushing myself to the limit farther than anyone else could. Chris, what do you remember about seeing McMichael and that Bears defense? Yeah. Well, the Bears defense is the best I've ever seen and I know that the Ravens of 2000 and Ray Lewis get most of the love for that because there's, you know, that's a this closer generation. The 85 Bears were the best I ever saw and they just tore everybody up. I think the, I don't know if it was the Patriots and the Super Bowl had minus 37 yards rushing and you couldn't even, you couldn't even get back to the line of scrimmage against them. And your passing attack would just be obliterated by their rush. Nobody had ever seen that 46 defense at the time. So nobody really knew how to plan against it. Marino was the only one who beat him and he beat him on a bunch of lucky bounces. He was thrown off his back foot. McMahon was injured. That's the only thing that kept the Bears from going undefeated, but McMichael was right in the middle of that. So it doesn't work without the guy right in the middle, you know, of the line. And, you know, this was a great, wonderful touch by the Hall of Fame to bring the bus to him and let him be able to celebrate in that manner. When I saw it, I thought a lot about people like, I guess maybe Don Coriel came to mind, but others, people that should be in the Hall of Fame, that they wait too long to put in the damn Hall of Fame and they never get instant. They don't get to see that even. And it happens in football. So let that be a lesson to, you know, all of the Hall of Fame's. You know, he got to see it, at least himself, get inducted. And that was a precious moment. Absolutely. Number two. All right. I don't. Oh, sorry. My bad. Sorry. Go ahead. Go ahead. Well, it was a question. What do I remember? I don't remember much. I was only three. But I know that that was one of the best defenses to ever play football. Yeah. And, and, you know, while I remember it is defense is because even though this defense was an 85, it felt like when they came out with Tecmo Bowl that they, you could still, the defense remnants of that defense was still there. But yeah, I was a little, probably a little too young to really know this defense like that. All right. I think. Number two. This is really number one, but I don't think we're having enough time to get through all five. The college football season kicks off with week zero action at nine a.m. on August 25th with Georgia Tech hosting Florida State. But that doesn't mean that we cannot start racking up NCAA violations early. New Michigan football head coach Sharon Moore was found to have violated rules along with six other members from the 2023 coaching staff. The allegations include more deleting a 52 text thread with former staff or counter stallions about stallions attempting to steal play call signals from upcoming opponents. Now, if you think these are Michigan like they had to cheat to beat central Michigan. These are, these are allegations allegations. Yes. Now, there are shots of this guy standing with a central Michigan hat on the sidelines. I do remember that from last year. Yeah, for sure. Now, if you're thinking you know more from somewhere, you probably do. Because this is the same goober that cried during his post game interview. You must have written this question. Yes, I did. I wrote all these. This is the same goober that cried during his post game interview after beating Penn State when Harbaugh got suspended for. Oh, yeah, that's right. These very same allegations. Yeah, Tony, why should this guy not be fired by Harbaugh personally? Because it's the same allegations. Yeah, but if Harbaugh's taking the rap for this guy, and this is the guy who actually did it, then Harbaugh got suspended for the thing is the NCA already had all this information last year. We're just now hearing about it. And that was the whole point. Remember when the big 10 went ahead and I don't know if they clear I think they cleared him at that point, which allowed Harbaugh to come back and coach in the whole time we knew the NCA was still investigating. So they had all this stuff. And if they really wanted to do something about it, they would have came down with their decision last when the season was still going. So, you know, at this point, you let it roll till now. I don't want to hear from you, NCA. This is part of the issue with the NCA and them ruling over things is that there's no consistency and they take years before they actually come up with something. By that time, people have changed jobs, things have changed at that point. My point was Harbaugh took the rap for this guy. And if Harbaugh was free and clear of not doing anything, I feel like I should be the one to give any penalty to this guy. Frank, I feel like you got some type of grudge against Michigan here. You called a man a goober. I'm a Penn State guy. There it is. And Penn State, the cleanest football program in the history of man. That's why I left that part in the great Joe Paterno and others. Does it have a football program? Let's be honest, though. No college football fan anywhere can throw stones because you're not probably living a glass house no matter who you are. You definitely live in the glass house, which is exactly why this stuff ought to just go away. The NCAA had their chance to get Michigan. They got what they got and it should be over. It should be over by now. Tell me you're a Penn State fan without telling me you're a Penn State fan. During a post game interview, it was his first win, but he's the one that did all this. Oh, it's like sour grapes. No, it's not. It's it's it's really not. It's how are you crying when you're the one who did it and you're replacing the guy who's taking the powerball line that if he's lying then fine. You still are a part of this. You're crying as though you're innocent. I don't think it mattered. They still tap Penn State on the weight of the championship. It's only like a five point game. Yeah, it's a still no. I get that, but still it's it's not. Only one one that wants to Penn State doesn't matter. That's not the point here. I feel like that's why your your angst is up though. No, it's not. It's the hypocrisy of this guy. That's what's getting me going. Penn State, pretty clean. If you're not hypocritical, you're not trying. College for off the break. Attention 97.3, the fan listeners. If your drowsy sluggish or feeling fatigued, you're about to get your afternoon boost with Tony Gwen Jr. You know, people like to be outraged. Chris Ello. I'm not a fufu guy. And Matt Scradi. See, I like Paul Skeens, the baseball player. Hate the media coverage. Don't blame us for any side effects. You thrilled our fans throughout the postseason with a great performance. Gwen and Chris are ready to go. Rob Manfred will never hear the end of it on this program. Unfortunately for Rob. I think it's your turn. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to step on your phone. No, it's all good. It's all good. It is my turn. 5 o'clock on the Dow, Tony Gwen Jr. Chris Ello, Frank Marchese, sitting in for the well-travel Matt Scradi, who is at Riggly as we speak. He's probably, he's not having a beer. I know that. No, he's probably having a dog dog. Now he's sitting out in the bleaches. He's going to be Ferris Bueller today. He's going to catch a foul ball and the camera's going to zoom in on him. I feel it. There's a part of me that wish I would have known the rager of Scradi, you know, in his other state. Oh, the crazy Scradi. There's a piece of me that wish I had met that version. We've seen a bit of that version, even when he's not drinking. When he loses his cool, he storms out of the studio during a game of the Fantabulous Game Show. We definitely see it a little bit. You almost got in the elevator last week and took himself downstairs. He was so upset. This just reminds me. I got beat by Adam, didn't I? Yeah, but that was, that was not a sports game, not sports resetting. The Padres did take two of three from the tough. The feisty Rockies Colorado Rockies. After sweeping the doggers at home, it was a successful homestand four and one. This team goes after seven and two on a road trip that had the Guardians, the Nationals, and the Orioles. Yeah, so Padres playing some good baseball. They'll take on Pittsburgh for three. Dylan Cease on the hill tomorrow versus Bailey Faltter. Faltter hasn't been bad. No, he hasn't. Five and seven, three, nine, five. He's not bad. Whips pretty good. But Padres should be able to handle anybody and anything right about now. You know what I like about the Padres? They have a pretty set left-handed, right-handed lineup. You could almost like yesterday, I guessed the lineup. Yeah. And I got it right. I just, I just had to, obviously you just had to flip-flop caposano and Higashioko yesterday. But how about Higashioko? How about this guy? Man. I mean, he hit another homer yesterday. I kind of forgot about it. I don't know why he'd forget about it to put him ahead to stay. Profar homered as well. But Profar is one thing. He's on his own, you know, arc and you know, the all-star team and all that. And he's going to get some MVP votes. I think Profar is. I really do. I think he's going to finish in the top 10 if it were to, you know, even who was it? Was it our guy, Matt Snyder, that had him like as high as in the running for second or third? It's probably it's a fair spot for. Profar's had his own thing. But Higashioko, he came here really as a afterthought. I know that people don't look at it that way. But the trade, you know, Soto to the Yankees basically was for pitchers. And oh, by the way, we'll give you a backup catcher, somebody that can, you know, backup Camp Asano play once in a while and not get in the way. He's a good team guy. You know, he's a good glue. He's a good clubhouse guy. He'll come in there. He won't make any waves. He'll be your backup catcher. And you won't hear from him again. He'll do a good job. Kind of worked out a little differently than that. It always does though. This guy has, he has more home runs in the last two months or two and a half months than any other catcher in baseball. Chris, it's not just that he's surprised he's beating out everybody. It seems like it always happens that way. It never is what it seems. I mean, we get that's really a lot of this Padres team. We came into this season, not knowing about center, not knowing about left, not knowing about the back end of the rotation, not knowing how first or second was going to play out. Yeah. And then, you know, season season begins and it gets going. And almost all of those have been addressed or answered by whatever the Padres have put there. And so it's not surprising. I mean, Kyle is indicative of what we've seen almost all year offensively, which is on any given day, it could be anybody. In any given couple of weeks span, it could be anybody that's carrying a low. Hey, guys, yoga did that for a while. He was unreal. He's batting ninth and doing this. He said 11 of his home runs batting ninth. Name a nationally catcher with more home runs than him can only name one because there's only one real motor. Who is it? Will Smith has 15, a gosh, yoga, Contreras, and Stevenson of the Reds 13. That's ridiculous. Yeah. One guy in the league has more home runs than him. How about hitting in that? How about hitting on that spot back to back years? You get Gary Sanchez and like me. Yeah. And he came in and really rejuvenize the the catching position. And now he faltered off towards the end, but to have stretches the way that the Padres have had out of that position the last two years, some good luck there. He got a chyoka is two home runs behind Will Smith for the NL lead among catchers. Will Smith has 200 more at bats than he does. Yeah. And only two more homers. I mean, gosh, you know, I mean, it's just one thing after another. That's why they got to take advantage of this Tony, right? They got to do it. Yeah, I know. I hate to say it, but you know, they put themselves in a position now. So many good things have happened. They got to, you know, they got to pull through and look like they're, you know, they're on their way to doing that. So they are. I mean, it's that's just the offensive side. I mean, he's gotten better in terms of throwing runners out. I mean, he's had to contend with a knuckleballer, which no one else is having to do with. You know, did you watch the same game that I do? Yes. I know you did. Why doesn't every team, and I think I know the answer, but why doesn't every team run wild on Waldron? He's got a knuckleball that the catcher can't catch. All you have to do is walk to second base. The problem is tell us the problem is a Matt Waldron has extremely quick feet. So guys don't get off, but he also does a terrific job of changing up his rhythm. He never keeps the same rhythm. And unlike a lot of knuckleballers that we've seen in the past, you can't depend that you're getting enough of a quick slide or fastball in there, and then you're going to be thrown out by five feet. I think the team that tried to take advantage of Waldron was the nationals. If I'm not mistaken, when they came here and had a bunch of people thrown out, and so, I mean, teams are getting on base, and I'm looking at, you know, well, you got to go. Guys got the knuckleball, the catcher can't catch the ball. And nobody goes anywhere. Waldron, he's another one. I mean, it's it's been a fun season. Yeah, no, these guys everywhere everywhere on the field, they just are doing a job. Hosung has not had the greatest offensive year. He's had taken a step. I don't want to say he's you know, he's taking a step back from where he was last year, but still finding his way on bases, still find him to play way to play, make a play defensively. Made a good one yesterday. Couple guys on back, Canada hot shot. Yeah, he did. You know, Bogart's is hitting about 500 since he's come back. His swing looks completely different right now. Right, Manny warming up, Croninworth hot and cold, but I still, to me, Croninworth is a guy that I want up there when it matters. Yeah, I know he didn't always come through. Nobody always comes through. Baseball, you only have 30% success rate, but Croninworth's the guy I want up there. We've already talked about pro far and Merrill. You know, last now, now, even Huggash, yoga and David Peralta's coming through, you know, to your point, right? The the Padres have a different times a year had the bottom of the lineup, get things rolling in the top of the line. Yesterday, that was that was indicative of a really strong top part of the lineup. And you move a rise out there because he got like a bloop single late in his last at bat, but pro far two for four, three runs, a double a homer. Jake two for four, two doubles, two RBIs, Manny two for four, a double two RBIs, bogey two for four, two runs scored, Jackson one for three, a double a walk, a run scored, Peralta, I mean, you just keep going down the list, man. And that is, that's a good offense. This team leads the team and leads the National League and batting average. I say they lead the National League and hits. They're like third and runs. I mean, his team, you don't get those kind of numbers and you're not sitting in those type of places unless there's some consistency with your ball club. And I know we talked a lot about the ups and downs, but a lot of times it wasn't the offense. I mean, we had some some moments where they sputter out, they don't score runs, but for the most most of the season, the offense has been able to hold it down. And in pitching, quite frankly, without their two starters for most of this season has been phenomenal. Would you have bet at the beginning of the season, anyone? Padres will have the best batting average in all major league baseball. Like, really? You would have thought of that? No, nobody would have thought of that. I don't know when the last time the Padres have, I don't know if they've ever led. Don't forget Petco Park is a quote graveyard for hitters. They play half their games there. You know what changed? Their approach. That's what changed. They are not trying. It's a graveyard. If you're trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark, you know what? It's not. It is a great place to hit. If you are a line drive type of plenty of openings and that the Padres have taken advantage of that all season long. Let me ask you another question, Tony, while we while I have you. Last week, we sang the praises of Ruben Niebala. Yes. Isn't it time we mentioned the hitting coach? Victor Rodriguez, instead of firing the guy, we should have been because we fire every pitching coach we've ever had and every hitting coach that we ever had. I mean, that's what I mean, hitting coach that we've ever had. Every hitting coach, we just chew him, you know, we boot him. We we practically drive up in a limo to drive them out of town. This guy's got us leading the league and hitting. I couldn't even barely name this game. I got I got a chance to to talk to him like the first day I got to spring and Victor Rodriguez. Yeah, he proceeded to kind of give his idea of what he wanted from the team. And he started this during the off season. And he talked a lot about staying in the middle of the field and not, you know, you want to drive the baseball, but that is not going to be where it ends for you. The with the approach and staying up the middle of the field and trying to hit the ball hard on a line has been, I think, a big reason for why these guys have played as well as they have. I mean, Manny in particular here in the second half, I can't remember the last time I seen him pull a ball to the left side of second base. Everything has been up the middle right center. Even the homers have been that way. He had to homer the other day where he on the pool side, but a lot of his hits are coming up to me. A lot of all these guys hits are coming up the middle. Can we say another thing that we're not supposed to want to do when we when we are on offense anymore in baseball? Because the analytic people would go crazy. How about the fact that the Padres have struck out the fewest of any team in baseball? Yep. Analytics says doesn't matter. Strikeouts to who cares. You got to strike out to hit the ball and you hit line drives. You can do all right. The Padres, I think, have shown that putting the ball in play has value. There's has to be some value to it. Yeah. I'm sorry. I can't add to old to just totally given to analytics and say it doesn't matter if I strike out when you bring up, you know, least strike out the least in Major League Baseball. I always think about the royals for those, by the way, that are keeping, you know, official numbers. Look where the royals are at this year, though. Yeah. No, they're taught there. The royals are a team that's competing in the in the AO Central with some really good teams. The Guardians are in the top five. The Astros, some of these that's gonna have to say the Astros the year, the first year they won it, they went from the most strikeouts the year before to the least amount to the least amount, the following year, and they won a World Series. Now I'm not saying that's the end. I'll be all that. That's really good players, right? I mean, they had Berliner and cold. They had a bunch of guys, but offensively they took that next step when they stopped punching out. A punch out gives you nothing. The flates me every time it gives you nothing. The analytic people cheer it. You don't even go good. You don't even force the defense to do their job. They get off scot free. They don't have to do anything. You've done the job for you. At least if you put the ball in play, everybody's got to do their job. You're preaching to me. I love it. I love to see them hitting the ball and they got the top average and the least strikeouts. Love it. And analytics say it doesn't matter. I say it matters. Padres offensively have been something to deal with all year long. All year long. All right, let's get the break. When we come back, how about a baseball potpourri? I like it. I like it. I hope you like it because you're leaving. That's what we're doing. More when it Chris on the other side. Here's some traffic. Welcome back five 22 is the time. Criscilla Tony Gwen Jr. together in our Odyssey Palace studios. Tomorrow I'll have a very short program. About a half an hour. That'll be ahead of Padre baseball. Padres are in Pittsburgh. Tomorrow taking on the Pirates. Tony Gwen Jr. is not going to be on this road trip. Padres will have to make do without him. But we are lucky to have him in here today with us. Of course, Frank Marchese sitting in for Matt Scrabby, who's at Riggly Field tonight and posting photos all over the place. If you want to see Scrabby's trip to Riggly. Big Frank is sitting in and letting us know that Sean Menaya has just joined. Who? Tom Siever and Tom Siever and Dwight Gooden. Pretty good company. Only starters in Met history to pitch seven plus innings get 10 plus strikeouts and allow no runs in two consecutive starts. Back to back starts. Menaya did that today also against the Cardinals. A game that the Mets at last check were leading six nothing and appear on their way to a victory over the Cardinals. It's a makeup day. We were going to do some baseball potpourri. But let's start with this. I'll ask you Frank and I'll ask everybody out there listening. Uh oh. The only person not eligible to answer this question is Tony Gwen Jr. I think I know where he's going with this. Do you know what tomorrow is anybody out there? As it pertains to Padre baseball as pertains to the greatness of Padre baseball. Tuesday. It is Tuesday. It is Tuesday and a greatness of Padre baseball. The greatness of Padre baseball. But when you say greatness of Padre baseball, you almost always are referring to Tony's dad. And tomorrow is the this is amazing to me because we all know where we were. Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary 25th of his 3000th hit. Came on August 6th 1999. I was home. Uh two watching to your home. You didn't make the trip. You didn't get to make the trip. It's actually where the story is kind of about a little bit on if you go to Yeah, I'm looking at MLB dot com right here. Uh Sean O'Neill wrote the story. Yeah. Uh you know so I didn't get so my dad went to the Padres when you were in St. Louis for that trip. They went to St. Louis and Montreal. They were the connected road trip. Right. Uh somewhere before we left San Diego, my dad had in his own head kind of calculated like this is going to happen either in St. Louis or Montreal. Now in 1999, I was going. It was a summer of my junior year. I was going to be a senior. Um I got earlier than that month. I got invited to area code trials. I ended up making it. So that's a big deal. Yeah. And so my dad, this was the very first time in my life that I was like, all right, I'm going to lock in on baseball and I'm just going to work baseball. Prior to that and even a little bit after that, I wanted to play basketball. So my dad was like, Hey, did you going to stay with me? We're going to you're going to travel with me? We're going to get prepared for this area code game. Meanwhile, he's chasing 3000. I think in some ways it gave him something to kind of take his mind off a bit a little bit. You were your his, uh, it's like a little project right now. You know, we're kind of his way to not think about it always. And so we proceeded all summer to work towards area code game and we got to the trip and mind you, out of we had a bunch of family and friends all fly to St. Louis because my dad obviously wanted to do it there, not just because it's St. Louis, which is a much better place to probably do it than Montreal at the time. But right. Meanwhile, Mark McGuire is also chasing 500 at this time. So I think in his mind, he wanted to do in St. Louis and have it kind of all come together, all of his family and friends get to see it. Right. And in the article, you'll get a chance, if you guys go, she'll get a chance to read it. It's probably the first time I ever noticed and people around my dad ever noticed the weight of the situation actually affected. Got to him a little bit. He went over to first day. Think he went one for five the second day. And then he went two for five the last day, which kept him one hit shy of 3000. So I had to fly out that night. The rest of my family went on to Montreal. I had to get ready to come home to drive to Long Beach for Saturday's area. You could not be there. Yes. And so I couldn't be there. But it was the first time I ever seen him look like it was a lot. It was only time I ever seen him look like. Thank God he got it. Yeah. I wasn't there, but I could imagine once he got that hit, it was like, it was like, oh, I can go back to regular life is as you guys know, my dad was not a fan of a lot in like a lot of food. He hated opening day. He loved the real opening day, which was the second game of the season, because all the real fans showed up. He said, yeah, but it's a good order. You get a chance to go read it. Yeah, it's a movie. Come memory lane. I don't be calm. Sean O'Neill is a good writer from San Diego. I wrote the article Tony Jr.'s quoted in it often, but yeah, tomorrow, 25 year anniversary. And just for fun, it's also the 31st anniversary of his 2000s. Would be my grandmother's. They did them both on the same date. My late grandmother's birthday, yeah, it would be tomorrow, which he got those hits on those days. Incredible. One last thing, shout out to my oldest daughter, Michaela. While we're talking about pericodes, you know, she took her first official visit today. All right. At a Cal State footage. We are all living our lives vicariously through Michaela right now. Shout out to my oldest daughter. She's going to be a star fun journey. She's going to be a star. What did she think? A Trinity Rodman's goal the other day. Oh, they loved it. They must have I must have watched it maybe 5,000 times now because it was a hell of a shot. It was hell of a shot. All right. I don't really know if there any other MLB notes that I got to get to that are as good as that one, Frank. Paul skeins, I'll give you to us. There's nothing going to be as good as that one, but they are going to start modern monitoring my man's innings. You know, this is the way of life now. If Scrabby was here, he would go one more reason the champion barrel should be the rookie of the year. I agree with him. Honestly, I agree with him. I'm just jumping in there for Scrabby. I think we all agree. Yes, we all agree. We also scream at every five minutes. No doubt. No doubt. Thank you, by the way, to all the people on Twitter have given me incredible engagement numbers for those two tweets I've put out about Merrill that should be over the should be rookie of the year. I listen, I think I think it should I think it should be that way, too. But do you start? You just got to know how these things you got to prepare yourself. Right. We've seen this one. We've seen this story. I think a couple times at this boy. I hope he gets it. And man, he's still got a very good shot at it. I mean, there's two months to go in the season. Paul skeins didn't look like himself yesterday. I will say that. So I mean, he could he could start to tail off, come back and open the door for my man, Jackson, a little bit. I wouldn't hurt anybody's feelings. Mr. skeins, because we like Jackson around here. All right, we'll take a break. We might finish up with some phone calls. Yeah, eight, three, three, we can do it. Two, eight, eight. Oh, nine, seven, three. So call us. If you want to share any memories of where were you 25 years ago tomorrow? Three thousandth hit for Tony Gwen senior was the anniversary that that that kind of gets everybody to take a moment and go, wow, bunch of time has gone by. We're going to Chris coming up. Smith is ready. We're in waiting the pitch. There's a drive right center field base into there with it. Oh, doctor, you can hang a star on that baby. A star for the ages for Tony Gwen number 3000. That was Jerry Coleman. Oh, yes. And his 3000 hit call for my father. You got to know doctor in there. Yeah, you did. I mean, it wouldn't have been a Jerry call. No, I didn't get a little bit in there. 25th anniversary of that hit tomorrow. And that's why it has come up. I did a set down with Sean O'Neill yesterday. It was funny. We started talking a little bit and, you know, we all we often find ourselves talking about the media today. And, you know, the conversation came up yesterday. And I was telling him, as a kid, I used to sit with my dad. And even on days, he wasn't in the best mood, right? He he'd make the the reporters work for it a little bit. And then, you know, he'd have a conversation. And a lot of times that is where I think a lot of the beat reporters and even some of the national guys would they get a chance to be educated about the game in a way that I don't think the new media is a really has the opportunity to and for many reasons. I think obviously, I think players are more guarded now because of social media. They don't trust the media that hasn't done the best job of earning, you know, garnering trust from players. But I also think players are reluctant to give up those tidbits. I mean, it wasn't just my dad. It was, you know, across the league from from from from Kirby Puckett to my dad to Aussie. I mean, all those players in the 80s and 90s, they like to sit in their lockers and conversate with the reporters. And I think what ended up happening is there's a better report, right? Those reporters can do their job a little bit better because there's a little bit of trust there. And you know, some of the questions that get ridiculed a lot by, I don't think they were asked as much than because they had the chance, Chris, to kind of sit down and be educated and think some of the things they didn't necessarily know about the game. There was also fewer reporters and they were dedicated to the team, the ones that were there. So they had a chance to get to know these guys a lot better than I think reporters do now. We have AJ, Casaville, we have Kevin, you know, AC, we have Dennis Lynn. Other than that, everybody's kind of in and out of that locker room, you know, Sammy does a great job being in there. I know Annie does and many others. But I think back in the day, it was a little close relationship. One thing that always bothered me about your dad was not his fault. It was my own thing. But I didn't like the fact that he was so nice to everybody because I knew he would be nice to me because I knew him. So I was hoping I'd have a little advantage on everybody. No advantage. No advantage. He was nice to everybody. You want nice to me? Well, that's your wrong collar, Frank. Frank, go ahead and tell that story. So it was my first game at Petco Park, probably like 2008 or so. Metz Padres. I got my Met uniform on because, you know, I'm me. And I walk up to that little walkway that's in front of the booths and I've got a handful of cards in my pocket to try to get Keith Hernandez or Ron Darling to sign whoever's there ended up being Keith Hernandez. And the usher was like, you can't, you don't have a ticket. You can't be here. But then he realized what I was doing. And he's like, all right, let me let's try to let's walk you over this way. See if I can get you in range. Yeah. Let's then he got Tony's attention. He's like, Tony, would you mind signing this kid's ticket? Nope. Wrong colors. That's right. I told I have a couple of rules that you would have signed an autograph every minute of his life. He did sign the ticket eventually. But he did give me some guff for it. It was notorious for a if you had a wrong, the opposite team stuff. Yeah. You better be a kid or he definitely isn't signing it. The other thing was he liked to make you work for it. He was going to he was going to bust your chops as he used to say. And if you could take it, then he ended up signing it most of the time. It's not all the time. I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember seeing him sitting there filling out the scorecard. Funny enough in a booth that I've now I could say that I've been in and I could sit in that exact spot. But I remember it like it was yesterday. Nope. Wrong colors. Meeting Tony Gwen senior is a highlight for a lot of people. Nope. And that is because of Tony Gwen senior. Oh, just that kind of guy. All right, 833-288-0973. Anybody want to get in? Tony's 25th anniversary of that 3000th hit. Where were you? Is tomorrow Dexter? Are you there? Our good friend Dexter in Spring Valley. Hi, Dexter. How's it going, buddy? Good. I want to kind of go off the beaten path a little bit first and say that I wanted to help you guys with your Olympic knowledge. No, we need it. OK, so you always leave it to Dexter to come in and oh, yeah. Give us some sales here. Yeah. But see, this ties into Tony's senior in a way because it's about basketball. Give it to us. OK, so y'all were talking about like why the three by three basketball doesn't have like NBA players like Hawaii and all that. Well, we later found out that you got to be in a league in the men's side at least to participate. We did read. We did read that. Yeah, it's actually both sides. OK. It has to it has to be a seba sanctioned league. And I and this how I learned this was this weekend when I was watching. I think it was on one of the side channels, you know, USA or CNBC or whatever's there showing the three by three. And they were talking about somebody at somebody was talking about it and they said, yeah, how come, you know, the the guys who didn't make the cut aren't here? And they, you know, they had the same conversation and they actually spoke with an official from the US, of course, who is, I guess, our fever rep. And he talked about why that is. And it just basically said that's why. And the guys that are on the three by three team for the US, they're the quote unquote all stars of three by three, fever, sanction, basketball. I don't know what that means. But not as good as the Netherlands guys. Yeah. And then the other thing was I can't believe that it's only been 25 years since that 3000th hit because I remember being in LA sitting in a room watching. I think it was a I forgot who was playing the Dodgers that day. And then they interrupted the game because I think the pods are playing in Montreal. Yeah. And senior hit the hit made that 3000. Excuse me. And the next thing I know, you know, everybody in the room who were Dodger fans turned and looked at me. And I'm like screaming like a maniac. And then good they go. And then, and then they go, we're now we're going back to Dodgers baseball. And then they turned around and gave me the business. And this is back in the day when the, you know, the Padres were I mean, Tony what Tony senior was pretty much the highlight of the team. You could say it. They weren't very good. That's well, no, but they'd been to the world series. This was the next year. But yeah, it was just it was just it was just kind of, you know, an irony that I happened to be amongst the sea of Dodger fans, you know, watching at a friend's house watching, watch seeing that and being the only Padres fan, you know, when they interrupted the game just for that. But they did this thing though. It was an LA game and they interrupted it because that's how significant that hit was. Yeah, no, that's good. Thank you, Dexter, for sharing. Good to talk to you. Thanks. And correct. Guys, you're welcome. Yeah, no, I mean, if you can't be there in person, I would say that's probably the next best place to be a boundary around a bunch of Dodger fans. You can rub it into those guys. Yeah. Is that the only 3000th hit a Padres ever gotten? Yes and no. Ricky Henderson got 3000th as a Padres too. Even though he had most of them elsewhere, he did get his 3000. He got the 3000s and your dad's last game. Yeah. They broke the things. They broke the runs record in that same series. Yeah. Ricky Henderson had his 3000th as a Padres too. But still, they've been playing baseball 125 years legit. 33 guys. Yeah. That's it. So it's still pretty. Don't we might be. I mean, outside of many having an outside chance. Yeah, who's close? There ain't anybody that's going to get that's going to come anywhere near it. It's going to be a while for a while. Because you either got to have you either got to have a bunch of 200 hit seasons or you got to play a long time and get close to 200 hits in all those seasons. 200. So 15 straight years of 200 hits would get you there. Freddy Freeman is the active leader. 22 23 needs 800 more. Out is ready. 34. Altuve is next. He's also 34. And he's sixth on that list. The man he needs over a thousand still and he's 31 years old boy. So I think it's going to be a while. We got a lot. That's that's it's going to be a long time. Especially when you look at the style of hitting now. It's well, we just we talked about the last segment of what he wanted to go for hits. They want to hit home runs. So it's crazy. 833-288-0973. If you want to get in on the Charlie Blackman is in the top 10 of active hit leaders. It's got a lot of hits against the Padres. 1768 1767 of them against the Padres. Finally got him out of this series of this weekend. That was kind of a scary one. Well, I got hit with the ball running up the ball. Yeah. That was it. That's when you can get hurt when you're not expecting to get hit. I tell you what and his eyes swelled up quick. I mean, it was almost shut by the time they made the decision to take him out of the game. So yeah, ever me with five minutes, he was on the field. That bad boy almost almost was shut close by the time he got off the field. Not good. You know, Frank was talking about another aspect and we've talked about this before, but talked about another aspect of your dad's three thousandth hit. It's just funny to hear Frank say it because Frank doesn't know. Frank goes, God, look at that. Man, the umpire went over and shook his hand. That's kind of weird. That was the wildest part. I said imagine Tony and I are immediately like, that's his teammate. Yeah. Kerwin Dannley was his take for life. Kerwin Dannley. I don't understand this. Maybe you can explain it to me, T. First team all American Kerwin Dannley, not just 13 for the first team. All American didn't get drafted. Like, how does that happen? They draft 7,000 players. How could you not somebody throw him a bone? He was first team all American. That's a good question. That's an ego state. He was a heck of a ball player, but he turned out to be a heck of an umpire too. No, he did a great job as an umpire. Got to the big leagues. Yeah, he had a long long career and it would have been a long grad. He not had those concussions that he had multiple years, I think. But that's just my point. Could you imagine, like, CB Buckner going up and giving, like, Jose Altuve, of course not. Of course not. Like, no, that just doesn't seem. I would bet in today's climate, Kerwin might not have done that. He might not have gone to shake his hand in that moment. He might have waited till after the game and done it behind closed doors because the scrutiny now is I go as the umpire on the take. He's shaking his hands over there. Yeah. I was glad he did it because I was in on it and I know you were in it and all of us Aztecs were in on it. We all knew what was going on there. Yeah, that was okay with me. Pretty cool moment. Yeah, I was great. Padre's back in action again tomorrow. We've talked a little bit about a Dylan Cease returns to the Mountie. He wasn't no hit Dylan Cease's last time out, but now he's terrible. He was pretty good still. Yeah, he was weak. It's what happens when you go what? Three starts and you give up two hits in total and then you give up three and one start and then people might start looking at you. Dylan Cease is as good as anyone pitching right now. How did this guy lose eight games? Right? We saw him. We actually saw I think we beat him last year at the end of the season. He didn't look as good as he looks right now. No, and you know, playing for the White Sox might might have something to do with that. You show up to the field and you don't have much of a chance to win. It seems like there was a lot of drama going on there. I tell you, when he came over, he just seemed like he was relieved to get out of wherever he was beforehand. And I constantly every time I see Dylan, I constantly think about Stephen Wilson and how close he was to going to Korea and now he's pitching for the White Sox tonight trying to keep from losing a 21st game in a row or guy ESPN ring. I've wild card teams or six, I guess, in the National League pirates are the least likely of that group cardinals. Braves are fourth most likely. Everyone's giving up on the Braves. I still think it's a little too early. Matt Olson could wake up or somebody. I think he has started to wake up anyway. They still got, you know, Juna crushing the ball. Mets are the third. Padres are the second most likely to make it. The Diamondbacks this air most likely to make it. Guardians have come back to take the lead over the Diamondbacks. Oh, sorry about that, Arizona. They still got two more innings. These two teams don't, they don't, they play nine innings too. Right. They don't, they don't, they don't cut it off. But guardians are leading five, four as we speak. I see. Well, let's see. Padres and uh, Padres are head of the Diamondbacks by half game. Yeah. The Diamondbacks were to win that game. They'd have the exact same record as Arizona. No one, uh, Mets won six. Nothing. They're another team in, in that kind of field. We talked about that. That's really it. There's only nine games going today. It's a quiet night in the big leagues. Is Rob there? Uh, yes, I believe, I believe he is there. And I also believe we need to do traffic as well. Let's see traffic. Then we'll hit wrong. Uh, as advertised, we're on in Mission Valley. Welcome to the program, sir. Hey, guys. Hey, I got something that kind of ties in with, uh, that you might appreciate, Chris. I was, uh, it was a first day of recovery for me, uh, torn labrum that I had from playing softball. And, uh, the first day after, uh, my surgery on that was, uh, when I got to listen to Tony get his 3000th and, um, that was also the same time I had to learn to throw my dice left handed when playing Stratomatic baseball. Very good. That's good stuff. That's how I know the 1927 Yankees lineup by heart, their averages. And I mean, that's a great game. But I mean, I'm out of my, I'm in and out of my car all day. And I caught part of that, uh, episode with Scrabble on that board game list. I made mine. We did a list of our top board games on Friday. Scrabble was my number five. Scrabble. Scrabble was also one of the top 20 ever in terms of sales. So yeah, that was one of those. Scrabble did get a mention. Yes, Wayne. Wow. Okay. Cool. Cause I didn't hear it when the parts that I got to hear. As your labrum, as your labrum come around now, this was 1999. So I assume you're okay. You know what? I was able to play until I was about 65, but then they kind of specified the game with like a safe basis at first and home and everything. And I gave up the game. And but now that shoulder starting to bother me now I sit way. Hey, I'm 70 years old. I can't ask for more. That's a long run. Nice work, Wayne. Very good. Don, but okay. I'm sorry, Ron. Why did we call him Wayne? You said Wayne like three times. Thank you. Sorry. We had a way in earlier. I tell you, I'm amazed I made it through the show, but based on where I came from at the beginning, you got the 15 seconds left. I got to make 15 more seconds. Well, Tony, have a good week. Thank you, sir. A little break here. Get yourself ready for the stretch drive of the season. Mr. Frank, outstanding way to drive way to drive. Well done. Thank you. Thank you. Well done. I think Adam's going to come back in tomorrow, but we have a very short show tomorrow. So me here at two o'clock sharp. It'll be Scrabies last day idle tomorrow. But we'll make it through for a little while ahead of the Padre pregame show. Enjoy the rest of your Monday night everyone. And I think he's actually Tony supposed to say goodbye and I'm stealing his thunder. Sorry. So you guys have a lovely, lovely week. Peace out. Yeah. What kind of programs does this school have?
