I think they're going to question mark. But if everything goes as planned, this is week two of Blitz month as we are going all the way through kick off talking to everyone who covers K-State talks about K-State. And as you guys heard last week, I had on one half of my favorite K-State podcast. Today I am talking to my second favorite of the two, but I still love him dearly. He is the architect of some absolutely amazing YouTube content where he is breaking down all sorts of different offensive schemes. Especially DJ the blue Jay Giddens absolutely loved that YouTube video. If you haven't already, go to the Aggieville alley cats YouTube page and watch all their stuff and you better be listening to their podcast. Cause like I said, it's my favorite in all of the K-State podcasting world. It is ace Edwards of the Aggieville alley cats ace. Welcome back. How's your summer been going? How's life as a law student? Just catch up the boneheads with life. If they're dumb enough to not be listening to the Aggieville alley cats on a weekly, multiple times a week basis. Well, first off, thank you for the amazing introduction as always, but as for my life, it's been going pretty well. Being a law student is tough. It's very busy doing a summer internship also known as secret day job at secret organization, which I cannot name. But just know it's some high level work. It's some really amazing stuff that we're doing there. But yeah, most of my time has been just spent either working on the show or working at my job. So the semester is about to start up in about a month. And also I got a new cat about at this point three weeks ago, who you may see roaming the background Scott specifically this is not a visual medium. But I'm just, I'm just happy to be here today and just there might be other YouTube videos in the works emphasis on might. Hey, you got to do what you got to do busy schedule so I'll eagerly await to see if they do pop up. I will ask what is like the biggest idea you've had for YouTube show or YouTube episode I should say that you have yet to execute. But you hope you can one day. Oh, that is a great question. I think it's probably the idea that I'm currently thinking about working on most. And that's the Joe Kleinerman episode. And the main hold up for that has been a mixture of just being really busy. And there are some things that I know what's happening just from the broadcast angle. But it's really hard to explain without like all 22 which I don't have. That fact haunts me and probably will continue to haunt me until I die. But that's probably the biggest one is just case date defensive scheming. Outside of that, I think at one point, the jail and Daniels video that I made was supposed to be a more holistic comparison of all of the big 12 quarterbacks before I decided that it was just going to be an episode of like 20 minutes of me being a hater. So, you know, I was, that was, that was a fun little experiment. Plus I had, I had the hunter deckers throwing the game away joke written in the script before it actually came out that it was happening. Well, that that that would have been that would have been epic. That would have been amazing. One thing before we get into the Blitzman stuff. With all this conference realignment stuff going on with all the switching and changing of schedule. How difficult has it been for you to lock in and kind of get ready for this season. Because I know for me that's part of why I did the behind enemy line series there's so many new teams when for the longest time is like hey we know exactly who we're playing. And we're going to play them every single year and we're going to play them twice in basketball. Have you had a tough time adjusting to the 16 team conference life like I have. Honestly, not really. And the main reason why is because I sort of view it as an extra opportunity to look at different teams I might not have otherwise had the opportunity to evaluate. So like I'm really looking forward to the Arizona game because I'm really looking forward to diving a bit more on to like Noah Fafida for example, and I wouldn't have gotten that opportunity with if the realignment didn't happen. But I understand how it certainly makes things more difficult because you know I basically having to throw out most of scouting reports from last year with rare exception but honestly most of the time you're having to do that anyway, because she oh house at Iowa State's gone. Grimes went from Baylor to KU which is going to be a disaster, but yeah you end up throwing out a lot of those reports but I just think it's. I understand how from like a content creation perspective it is definitely more difficult but in a way it kind of just makes it more interesting than me. No I love it I love it. All right blitz month is presented by our friends at Manhattan Brewing Company. Every single game day whether Homer away needs to start with Manhattan Brewing Company. Our official tailgate beer of the year is towney wheat but it doesn't matter if you like something crisp, and crushable, a great IPA or a style that is something mold for to make you feel like it's already fall. What do we have you taking care of stop by every time you're in Manhattan get a pint and then get a couple four packs and a couple of crawlers to go and remember if you live in the great state of Kansas talk to your local liquor store. Be polite but be stern say hey I want some Manhattan Brewing Company four packs right here in Shawnee I went to Missy's hashtag no free ads but they were freshly stocked with some Manhattan Brewing Company four packs. Talking to people matters and it works. Let's get into it right now. We have the rotating questions before we get into the blitz month predictions. My first one is going to be for you. What is your confidence level with Connor Riley when it comes to the play calling duties. If we're going to put this on like a scale of one to ten which is probably the most easily digestible way to do it. I would say he's probably sitting at a solid with Matt Wells being I'm I assume that he's going to be doing the majority of the past scheming. He's not going to be the play caller but he's probably going to have some on the scale for how the passing game is going to be schemed up. I would say it's going to be probably a solid seven and a half to eight is where I would put my confidence level, which is a little bit lower than what I had for Colin Klein if I had to handicap it back when he first took the reins. I think I would probably would have said he was like an eight and a half, but he's also dead to us now. So he the main concern with me with Connor Riley is not it's never going to it's never been scheming up the run game because that's kind of been his thing, even when Colin Klein was calling the place he was mostly the guy who handled the run game scheming. I don't have any real concerns about that. I it's it's just going to be sort of those those situational times where you know what is an offensive line coaches ideal two minute drive look like what is a one minute drive look like. How is he going to utilize the screen game and it's it's a bunch of questions. And the bad news is I think that Connor Riley is going to have the same growing pains that Klein did in his first few games, because outside of the Texas bull. I kind of forget that the first three offensive performances for a Colin Klein run offense were putrid and how much of that was Colin Klein and how much of that was Adrian Martinez barely having a functioning shoulder at the time. It's just to say, but you know I think that there are going to be growing pains and I think there are going to be a very reactionary subset of the fan base that's going to call for Connor Riley's job. I don't think that Connor Riley is going to have a game this year, where you can in a loss exclusively on him. He may have drives that you question what he's doing but that's every offensive coordinator. I think I'm sitting at seven, seven and a half or Connor Riley. And to that point, there is I think the most hated position in all of coaching across all sports is offensive coordinator. And I think it's only going to get worse and you can laugh at this if you want. I think it's only going to get worse now that the video games back, because everyone's going to think, Oh, like calling plays is not hard. Anyone can scheme up a 50 burger like what's going on here. And even Colin Klein even last year was getting some of that shit. So I agree with you. I'm going to try my best not to be reactionary but I mean, 50 50. We'll see. I love Connor Riley so probably carry a little bit more of his water. I actually was against the Colin Klein hiring when it happened. But hey, that worked out and again he is dead to us so we will move on. You also were pro messing down. Well, okay. Let me just say this. Let me just say this. Let me just say this. I wasn't necessarily don't fire messing him. I was more of. Okay. He is way better than anyone's giving him credit for because again if you look at the per drive stats. He was, I mean, everyone wants to be like, Oh, you know, Colin Klein, you know, so great, so efficient. Well, yes, I mean, it was a top 25 offense when you look at that types of messing him was like a top 35 offense when you look at efficiency metrics. And he just played slow literally the slowest in all of college football that everyone was like, okay, any one mistake is amplified in fans minds and then again, disappointing 2021 when everyone had Arlington dreams. You put anything 2020 on his shoulders, because COVID plus shitty true freshman will hire a quarterback like who could have coached that offense besides me playing a video game. No, me real me and real. Okay. Sure. We're going to move on. This episode is brought to you by our good friends at NFL Sunday ticket on YouTube TV. I'm sure by now you've all got back into your Sunday routines, but they could be even better with NFL Sunday ticket and YouTube TV. The most live NFL games all in one place every game every Sunday. Sign up now at YouTube dot com slash BS device and content restrictions apply local national games on YouTube TV and if I'll send a ticket for out of market games excludes digital only games. Will this be the year that we have a wide receiver lives up to the hype that fan base is billed. Again, I think he can still kind of carrying that from last year. I think there's a lot of hope people looking at what Dante Cifis did at Kent State. Now, Jay Sproun's the homegrown great, you know, hope for the wide receiver room. And then there's still some sterling locket heads out there as well. Is there going to be a wide receiver lives up to the hype and if so, who is it going to be. I think the easiest and safest bet for a receiver that's going to be living up to the hype is going to be Jay Sproun. It's actually none of them, but we'll listen to why you think Jay Sproun is safer than none of them continue. The reason I say Jay Sproun is safer than none of them is because Jay Sproun he was someone that even when Connor and I did the evaluations for his recruiting class we sort of knew what he was. And he was basically what we thought RJ Garcia's and the game was, which was a runner who was pretty consistent. And I think that, I think that's what most people's expectation for Jay Sproun is, is a consistently solid option with, you know, who can make the occasional big play. And that's what he was last year. I think Jay Sproun is the best in terms of known commodity in the receiver's room. Now, does that mean that he has the highest ceiling out of anyone in the receiver's room? No, that's still probably trace by me. And for more immediate playing time, it's KJ, I would say Keegan Johnson. I need to stop calling him KJ. I've called like five people KJ in the process of the show's existence, but the easiest answer is Jay Sproun lives up to expectations because he's probably the favorite to be the leading receiver. And if it's not him, it's probably going to be carried out locally, but he's not a wide receiver is tied in. So, there we go. I absolutely love it. All right, the reason for the season and, you know, it's what everyone's waiting for the blitz month predictions. But before we get there, shout out to our friends at Charlie Hessel, home of the best officially licensed K state gear in the game. Not only that, but I have, again, you guys heard me talk about last week, I'm going to talk about it. All of Blitzman, third count down to kickoff drops are absolutely amazing. So I can't share the visuals with you guys, but I have it on pretty good authority. We're getting a new bomber jacket. We're getting a new hoodie. We're getting two new T shirts and one of them. Legitimately my favorite that they have put out since they've been a sponsor of the show. So get ready buckle up. The countdown to kickoff is on its way from Charlie Hessel. The vintage made fresh. All right, let's get into the blitz month predictions. I'm tracking all of these. Again, there'll be a follow up question on the first one. So if you have honorable mentions, that's fine. But I do want to know open ended, who is going to be the offensive MVP. That's going to be Avery Johnson. And we could spend several hours talking about why. But the short story of it is Avery Johnson has a ridiculously high upside and he showed solid ability to make decisions as a true freshman in the pop tarts bowl against the defense that although they were missing their best piece of paint and Wilson, they still were a very cohesive unit. And that to me makes, I mean, it's almost always going to be the quarterback. But even if you take out the quarterback handicap, I think that it's sort of a one a one B situation if all positions were equal. And I'm guessing the next question will be who is one B. Yeah, so again, I harken back to last year, there was all the will Howard hype and I would argue will hire was not the offensive MVP last year. I would say it was DJ. But hey, it is what it is we're not talking about last year. But if you were trying to add one or two horsemen to the three horsemen or three heads to amount rush more of the offenses here however many honorable mentions you want to talk about. Who are some of those guys who might be in the running if Avery does not pick up that award. The one B option is DJ Giddens. And a lot of that is just because of the skill set that he has which is more complete than a lot of people are willing to give him credit for. And again, you mentioned the video earlier but I do genuinely recommend it because, you know, it's, it shows a lot better what I'm trying to say. But it's his traits that make him a good running back are going to make him a good running back no matter what the down distance or situation is. Because he's truly a complete player where the only thing he lacks is I guess like true game breaking long speed but that's what Dylan Edwards is here for. But my, you know, I drew Galloway and I shout out KSO have to get that in there somewhere, have the same like attitude when it comes to player comps for people. But honestly my player comp for DJ Giddens like for an NFL level Spencer Ware, who is kind of forgotten really solid back for the Chiefs who was a good receiving back who also ran the power. And I think that DJ Giddens is just Spencer Ware with better vision. Well, I would, I would do a lot of things to get DJ on the Kansas City Chiefs, but not an early draft pick. I'm very much anti drafting running backs early but like, you know, if he falls to the fourth or fifth round. Right Veach, bring, bring DJ home and watch him cook alongside Isaiah pacheco for another year do not extend him, but this is not a Scott hates on running back. Contract podcast episode this is ace Edwards blitz month prediction episode so the next one and this is this is one where this is the one question I think that it could have potential for just about everyone to have a different answer. I think there will be someone who ends up running away with this but I think I could craft a scenario, which just about everyone answers this one different, but who's going to be the defensive maybe probably my guess would be marquee seagull and the reason why I say seagulls is because he was honestly a pair of hands away last year from being the defensive MVP on on that team. And people just forget about it because he didn't grow a pair of hands until like week 12, but he was a really solid run defender who had growing pains in the non con game and, you know, you have your first impressions. And marquee seagull at the MU game still haunts my nightmares, but like he quietly turned into one of the best safeties in the big 12 during conference play. And to me that's a really, really valuable positions so especially when he is going to have so many different roles in the 335 where he's playing that free slash Jack safety. Where his job is basically to do a little bit of everything. So I also think he's probably going to end up being either the best or the second best communicator, at least for the defense. The first one, he will get a mention very soon, but my pick will is almost certainly going to be marquee seagull, especially if he ups his like 33 cashings I don't know, 50. Well, and I have a feeling I, not a feeling I probably will bring this up every time. He is mentioned for defensive MVP. Chris Carmen was going around big 12 media days calling him the best safety he's ever coached, which if you look at the NFL draft picks he's had at K state, you look at the guys he's had at North Dakota State I think that's pretty high praise for one Mr. legal. All right, let's go to the next one. Who is the newcomer of the you're going to be true freshman or transfer. See this one is is easiest if I was able to split it up between offense and defense, but it is just why I didn't do it. Yeah. Yeah, that's it. I paid attention. I read. If I had to pick one right now, I would almost certainly say that it's going to be Jordan Riley. And the main reason I say Jordan Riley and not Dylan Edwards is because Dylan Edwards probably is going to be an honorable mention all big 12 pick as the second string running back or one B. Jordan Riley and Marquis Siegel have a legitimate chance to both be all big 12 safeties. And the main reason that I'm so high on on Jordan Riley is because he at ball state if I'm remembering correctly his best game was when they played up against Georgia. So he had his brightest moment against the best competition. And I think that that's something that he's going to now that he has a no offense to ball state. But now that he has a more holistically complete defense around him, he's not going to have to do a little bit of everything. That's going to be Siegel's job. So Jordan Riley can focus on being Jordan Riley. He doesn't have to be Superman. And whenever you have a safety who's able to play within themselves and play within the scheme plus be a good communicator, which is another thing that we've been hearing. We, yeah, we will say we, that he's been a really plus communicator. I think there's a legitimate shot. Now Marquis Siegel, both end up as all big 12 safeties. No, I'm right there with you. And I think that when you look at how case state safeties play. I feel like, and I'm a big VJ paint fan as well. I think that you have the three guys who most perfectly fit the jobs that they are supposed to do. And I don't think that that has happened since they've gone to three safeties. I think they've had good three safeties. And again, I'm not going to, you know, completely shit on Kobe Savage. Although I've been on the record saying, if he's starting week one, I don't think he's starting by big 10 play. And he hasn't been the same since the injury. This is again, not a, not a dump on Kobe Savage check thing, but I think we finally have three guys who are meant for the rules they have. And I think that's why I'm so excited about the safeties. All right, let's go to next breakout player. And this is a returning player who has a big impact on who is yet to make a big impact in his time at case state. And again, this will probably be the last time I preference this. I was a dick to everyone on this question last year. I was like, oh, that's, he's already been, he can't break out. He's already made a big impact. Unless you're saying Desmond Purnell and I'll have to yell at you. I know you're not going to. But for the most part, I'm far more lax this year on this question. And that's probably the last time I'll preface this question. So, who is Ace Edwards breakout player of the year? This is another one where you have a couple of really good candidates, but pretty much all of them are on the defensive side of the ball and almost all of them are defensive ends. So, cop out answer, the defensive end room, real answer, uh, Chidioui Isor. And the reason I say Chidi is because it's not because I was lower on him coming out of high school and then was immediately proven wrong. So, shout out Ryan Davis for being the inverse, but also shout out Ryan Davis for catching mono. But there, Chidioui Isor I think was, he's the one of the freshman defensive ends that got the most playing time last year. And he has the best general skill set that he's shown thus far to being a 335 defensive end with a little bit more positional versatility than your, than most would give him credit for. If we were going by new college football game standards, Jordan Allen would be winning the Heisman because he got like 30 sacks, which, yes, that actually did happen in my case state dynasty. But I think Chidi is probably the best option here. And the problem is, is that the defensive end room is just so unbelievably stacked with guys that either have experienced like Brendan Mod or Cody Stuffle Bean, or guys with high upside like Jordan Allen Chidioui Isor or steady piece. So, you could throw a dart at the defensive end room. And as long as it doesn't hit like Cody Stuffle Bean or Brendan Mod as a breakout candidate, you're probably have a decent chance of getting it right, even if it hits like Donovan Ryman, who Connor and I were both really high on coming out of high school. Yeah, they, they have done a great job with that room and I'm looking forward to seeing the situations and the formations that they get three of those guys out there all at once. So, stay tuned working on trying to get someone to come on, go on the record with what I am thinking we're going to see a little bit more of this college football season from K state. All right, we will keep moving forward is my favorite question let's the pendulum game of the year for you. I'm going to give the same answer I gave last year that made you mad the next one. But the serious answer is Oklahoma State in Manhattan, because it is wedged between two true away games in BYU and Colorado, Colorado was the other one that I was debating on being the pendulum game. But to me, Oklahoma State is for as much as you most people, i.e. me and Connor, have no idea what Oklahoma State is going to be by their non conference play. You know that they're always going to at least put up a fight in big 12 play. So to me, the Oklahoma State game is always going to be a really good barometer for where the team is going to be, and you're getting that game at home. So if you win the Oklahoma State game, that is when you can start putting a little bit more hype into, okay, K state, big 12 contenders, it becomes more tangible, it becomes more real. If you lose that game, I'm not going to say the season is over, but you do have an uphill climb, especially chance to get a tiebreaker with Utah, who I think Oklahoma State, K state and Utah. Probably make up the top three contenders for the big 12. You could argue that there's another tier like right below them. I wouldn't, but you could. All right, well, you're leading almost into the next question. The first next question is what is K state's record, then we'll just parlay into it because you already touched on it. What is the Dr. Pepper Big 12 championship game kicking off at 11 a.m. in Arlington, Texas looking like. So I'll start with with K state's record, and this is, this is something that Connor and I sort of mulled over in our, our season preview, which I think ended up being like what now or 10 minutes long, something like that. But I could do a, I could do a Q and A episode that gives two hours if I needed to. You guys need, those are rookie numbers. Listen to the first episode we did. It was like three hours. Oh, oh, I promise you, I have. I think I mean, you shouldn't have twice. I think you guys asked me a question about it. And I went back and listened to it a second time. So yes, I've listened to it. And I've had my fair share. I've had my fair share of long ones. I think Grant and I went and met up with Matt Hall in the tall grass tap house. And we had an episode that I think we're two and a half hours long. So we, we had some long ones and not just the, you know, bonehead live prediction episodes. Those always went over two hours. So RIP live shows are dead. Sorry, didn't mean to take you off. What, what, what is, what is your record on your marathon one hour and 10 minute podcast. I think I ended up settling on 10 and two. And the only one that I was willing to pencil in as a loss was West Virginia. And it's not because I think West Virginia is like this world beat our school. I just think West Virginia as in specifically Morgantown is scary. And it's coming at a really, really in opportune time where you're getting the national spotlight for better or for worse whenever you go to Boulder for Colorado. And then you get the KU matchup against the team that people think is going to be good, but, you know, we'll see about that, especially on offense, the defense will be fine, but the offense, you know, who knows the defense was pretty trash last year. Yeah, well, you said it. Yeah, you know, but they made some splash plays, you have Melo Dotson and Kobe Bryant who holds people in every play. We're not doing this rant now. I can do this rant another time, but we're not doing this rant now. I picked 10 and two because although there's only one that I would say is like more than a coin flip as a loss. It's just going to be a question of waiting like the what the hell game this year and that's I think that that's going to be every college football team is going to have it. I just have I just have a preference for which games it's not, but I, you know, Connor and I went through every game and gave a reason why a case state would lose if they were to lose. And the most likely scenario we found at that was the second loss being Iowa state, but then again, you literally don't know what is going to happen and farm again because farm again is weird. So I went 10 and two, and I do have K state making the big 12 title at that record. And the only reason why is because holding tiebreaker over Oklahoma state because I do have them winning that game. Well, tiebreaker madness could be upon all of college football this year so we're all going to have to become experts in tiebreakers. So do you have K state playing Utah in that big 12 championship or rematch with Oklahoma state. Houston. Okay. No, I don't know. I was like, I mean, I knew in the mo like it took me back for a second. Oh, man. And look, I've learned to not be a willy frittator. Especially once I found out that, you know, he went to high school and lived and got his coaching career less than a mile from where I currently live. But man, he might, he might get there one time, but it's not. Yeah, I just say, if he wins a couple games good for him. Okay, so I assume Utah then based on. Yeah, because of its tiebreaker with Oklahoma state, it would be Utah. The, this, this completely changes if cameraizing gets hurt which she seems to do a lot but I'm for this for the sake of this projection. I'm saying every team stays as healthy as possible. So I, I think it is going to be K state, Utah. And I, this is a K state podcast. So I, of course, I'm going to pick K state to win the big 12. And it's also the preseason. So I don't have to fall into nihilism and despair yet. So I, I do think the K state wins the big 12 and the, the, the X factor as to why is the offense is too talented to not put up points, regardless of anything else that happens around it. Like this, this offense has the talent to like oopsie daisy, you know, like 24 points a game, which is hilarious. But, and then the defense is experienced and talented enough to where I think that they can consistently hold teams under, you know, like 17, 20 points. Like that, it's just, it's a matter of, it's sort of two opposite ends of the spectrum here. Offense is insanely talented but a little bit inexperienced with an inexperienced play caller, but that talent can almost carry them wherever they want to go. And then you have the defense, which is not to say that they're not talented, but they're so experienced that they're just not going to make as many dumb mistakes as other teams and college football, much more than the NFL. Is about avoiding the big mistakes. And I think that that is going to be what the defense excels at. I love it. I love it. All right. So we have K say going 10 and 2, getting into the big 12 championship game with a tiebreaker and beating Utah, bringing home the doctor pepper big 12 championship. The final question is, as long as I've been doing this podcast, there's been at least one surprise job opening that is shook college football every off season. Make a prediction. What is that job going to be this year? Alabama can't win before it takes an NFL job. Oh, man, that would, that, that is great. I love that one. That would be fun. Alabama having to hire a new coach back to back off seasons. Oh, Paul fine bonk show. I might actually tune in for the first time in my life if that happens. That's a great one. All right. So that's all we have. Plug away. Where can everyone find your great work on YouTube? Your guys's podcast, your social media, anything you want the boneheads to know. Now is the time. All right. So first off, thank you for having me on what's month is always a pleasure to hop on Bosco's boys. But as for me, I'm a said words, one half of the Aggieville alley cats and you can find Aggieville alley cats pretty much anywhere on social media with the tag Aggieville a cats. And if you want to find us on YouTube, we're Aggieville alley cats where we do breakdowns, film breakdowns and we also post our episodes up on YouTube. I shot you the nights in the ville crew, which is the new sort of, I guess, live show adjacent format that we've started where two of our friends have already been roasted for things.
