Happy Monday morning, everybody, and welcome in to Ben & Woods on, yes, a Monday morning. And once again, Woods is still on vacation. Jeff in the chats is, "What's back today? I've already forgotten what he looks like." Me too, Jeff. Me too. Now, Woods is not back until Wednesday, so you're stuck with me, Ben Higgins and Paul Reindel, our executive producer, imaging director and co-host, who has been working very, very hard this last week. Not that you don't work hard when Woods is here, but you're wearing a lot of hats, Paulie, and I appreciate it, and it's good to see you. How was your weekend? I was wearing my yellow pottery spring training hat. That's a good one, yeah. You wear hats and you wear a lot of figurative hats as well. Yes, but I know, long, long week, last week, good week, I thought. I thought it was a really great week. Very tired though, spent the weekend just relaxed. I blinked and the weekend was over. I hate when that happens. It's like, "Okay, Friday's here, let's go. It's time to relax, kick back." And the next thing I know, I'm showing up at work at Channel 10 on Sunday afternoon. Where did that weekend go? It feels like it was just Friday morning and I was here and now we're back here on a Monday. But I guess that just happens as you start getting older, the passage of time, at least perceptually goes a lot faster. I got an email at work this week. They're already asking me to request my days off over the holidays. Oh boy. In December, I'm going, "Didn't we just get through the holidays? Christmas wasn't that just a little while ago? I'd already have to pick my days off for December at the end of the year, but that's how fast these years go." You made the great point though, as we were texting with Woods last night, that thanks to the Padres' Rare Sunday win, Second Sunday win in the last three Sundays, yesterday, and thanks to a couple of wins last week. We'll actually get through the entire Woods vacation without coming on the day after a loss and having to talk about it without him. Now, who knows what happens tomorrow in Pittsburgh when Woods will be back on Wednesday morning? Guaranteed loss tomorrow. But you and me, we got nothing but the wins to talk about. They did lose on Friday. But that's a distant memory now after taking to a Friday in the Colorado right. What are you talking about Friday? Yeah, distant memory. Y'all want to talk about Friday? Friday. Barely awake on Friday. So, the Padres treated us pretty well while Woods was gone, giving us a lot of positive stories. Good things to talk about, and ultimately a series win and a four-in-one home stand, which was pretty good. I did watch some Olympics over the weekend. I got up early yesterday. You kind of wake up when you wake up, and then you realize it's the weekend, so you go back to sleep. I'm pretty much my body is set that's going to wake me up around 30, 440 every single morning, whether I want it to or not. I'm pretty good if it's Saturday or Sunday. Don't have to get up, turn it back off, and go back to sleep, and give me at least another couple of hours before I get up. But it happened yesterday, and I thought, "You know what's going on right now?" The final round of the Olympic golf tournament, so I'll pop it on because I know Xander Shoffley was tied for the lead with John Rahm going into the final round, and popped it on for a little while, and he was still up there. I think tied for the lead in the front nine early, and I thought, "Okay, I really need to get some more sleep." So, I went back to sleep for another couple hours after watching for like 45 minutes, and then I got up again, and he'd look completely fallen apart. Like, gone was no, I couldn't even find him, like, "What happened, Xander? Where's John Rahm? Where's Xander?" John Rahm was like, "You got up by four strokes, and then he disappeared, and Xander disappeared, and all of a sudden, Scottie Shiffler is coming out of nowhere shooting a 62 to win the gold medal." And what a narrative change that was, because... Tell me about it. As of Saturday, everyone's going, "I don't know, I don't think Scottie Shiffler's the player of the year anymore." I mean, if Xander gets two majors, and he gets a gold medal, isn't that better than all the things that Scottie Shiffler has done? Just throw that in the garbage, because with Scottie Shiffler's major year, six wins, masters title, players championship, elevated events, and now the Olympic gold medal with a record 62 on Sunday. Yeah, it was Scottie's year. It was probably Scottie's year all along. It was great year for Xander, but he's the number two player, and Scottie remains the number one player. So I watched that, and watched some of the other Olympics. We'll talk about the 100-meter race a little bit later, the drama there. Probably could make an appearance in a couple of different segments. Don't do this on the call by NBC of getting the winner of the premiere race of the Olympics. They said it was such conviction. Wrong. Not confident. I mean, leave some room for doubt that maybe someone else won. Did he win? Did he win? I mean, no. It was decided by five-one-thousandths of a second. Even like you go to the horse races and there's a photo finish, they're always like, "Hold, I'll take it. There's a dramatic reveal after a couple of minutes." I don't know how the Lee Diffy, who's the announcer, felt so sure about who won at the line when there were four runners who were all within hundreds of a second of each other. And that's the difference between, and I saw someone posted it, there's an old Seinfeld stand-up bit. That's the difference between gold medal, silver medal, bronze, no one ever heard of you, you don't win a medal. I've seen the Seinfeld, he's like, "Now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now." You train your whole life and it comes down to between now to now, now. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Wow. Perceptually, for at least a human being, the difference between the fastest man in the world and the fourth fastest man in the world, who gets absolutely nothing after training all those years and gets to the Olympics and we're like, "That, I was that close, I was right there." I mean, even the guy who's in last finishes less than a quarter of a second behind everybody else. And it's kind of one of the more ridiculous events, but clearly, it's kind of the premiere. Wouldn't you say it's the most Olympic of the Olympic events? It's just a hundred meter dash. You asked last week your seventh inning stretch question for the round table was, "If you could win gold, dominate, be the best in any one Olympic event, what would it be?" And my answer, I don't think I even hesitated. It was a hundred meter sprint. Like, just to be able to say, "Yeah, I'm the fastest man on the planet." I think it's the best event. It's my favorite to watch. It's thrilling for as short of a race as it is. It lived up to all the hype. It was great. The feeling of being able to go that fast without being in a car or on a motorcycle or something, and you're actually propelling yourself as fast as those guys go in such a short period of time. It's compelling theater and it's compelling drama. And I think the reason that we do enjoy watching the Olympics, because let's be honest, most of us probably watch zero of these Olympic sports between the Olympics. I don't watch the World Track and Field Championships every summer. I don't watch the World Gymnastics Championships. They do have them every year. World events. And we don't need the swimming. They do these every year, but we only pay attention to them one every four years, which makes them, of course, probably more than they should be. They have outsized importance for the athletes because they know they can win two world championships in between the Olympics, but if they don't meddle, if they're not on the podium at the Olympics, then they really haven't made any impact, at least beyond their sport. That's the only way they can have an impact culturally beyond their sport is to win at the Olympics. So with that kind of pressure creates the kind of theater and drama that we enjoy watching on television. And it's kind of a sick thing that part of the reason we like watching it is how big a failure is costly to the athletes. They have everything on the line, which, of course, makes it great theater. Maybe it shouldn't be that way. A guy who wins two world championships, but doesn't win the Olympics is probably just as good of a sprinter as the guy who wins the Olympics, but doesn't win the world championships the year before. Generally, they're running against the same people every year in these races. But only one set of every four years is everybody watching. Does everybody care about it? So that race has just such outsized importance compared to the rest of the four-year cycle. That being pretty good theater. I think the Olympics gets it right. And then I wouldn't want to watch the Olympics every, certainly not every year. I don't think every two years. I think four years kind of gets it. That adds to the mystique. Yeah, 100%. It's pretty cool. So, yeah, watch some Olympics this weekend and went down to the game on Saturday with the Padres. And we'll talk about the weekend against the Colorado Rockies. But ultimately, they as disappointing as Friday was. It's hard to complain about anything when you go four and one on a homestand. That's an eight. Eight hundred winning percentage. Team's on fire. Team remains on fire, eleven and three since the All-Star break is the best record in baseball. Since the break, yet the one team that they can't really put any separation between the Padres and the team that is chasing them, the Arizona Diamondbacks, they have the second record, best record, since the All-Star break at eleven and four. And their hot streak actually stretches, of course, before the All-Star break, when they, you know, they played the Padres, played them well, took that series from the Padres before the All-Star break. The Arizona Diamondbacks, you could argue, depending on what date you want to choose, might actually be the hottest team in baseball over the last three to four weeks since before the All-Star break. So, the race in the National League for the wildcard spot for the National League West title remains very, very hot. The Dodgers did the same thing as the Padres over the weekend, taking two of three from the Oakland A's, you know, last place club, you lose the first game and you come back and win the next two to take the series. Exactly what the Padres did against the Colorado Rockies, the Dodgers did against the Oakland Athletics. So, no ground lost, no ground made up against the LA Dodgers, Padres remain four and a half games back, which is, which is all right. But at some point, you know, you're going to have to, if you want to catch him and you want to win the division, you're going to start chipping away at that four and a half games. The Dodgers are fine matching the Padres, you know, than the Diamondbacks the rest of the way. Yeah, if there's anything to quote unquote, complain about, we don't complain about wins, so this team is playing so great, but God, doesn't it feel like every time they go on a streak, whether it's five in a row, six out of seven, whatever, they can't make up a ton of ground. The teams that they would seemingly be trying to be chasing all start winning as well, right around the same time. Yeah. And that has been kind of the case here. There is one team they've made up a lot of ground on since the All-Star break. That's the Atlanta Braves who have gone seven and nine since the All-Star break, meaning the Padres have made up five games. I think that is on the Atlanta Braves going from that far back to now for the first time I believe all year long, Padres find themselves in a virtual tie with the Atlanta Braves at the top of the wild card standings. Now technically the Braves have played two fewer games, so they have one less loss, which means percentage wise, the Braves are ahead, but of course the Padres do own the tiebreaker. And if they finish tied at the end of the season, when of course, every team will have played the same amount of games, the Padres would have the edge there. So they've essentially erased that deficit. Padres are tied with the Braves, half a game ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks. And they did, they did pick up some ground on the New York Mets this weekend as well, who stubbed their toe in Anaheim, dropping two of three to the Angels. And they're nine and seven since the All-Star break. So the Padres have gained a couple of games on the Mets who have fallen a game and a half out of that third wild card spot. The Cardinals lost three of four to the Cubs, including Sunday night baseball last week. So there's kind of the top three and then a little bit of separation. And you go down to the other teams, which is where you want to start creating some of that separation going forward for the San Diego Padres. And then then you can really focus in on chasing down the Dodgers and not worrying about what the Mets and the Cardinals and the Pirates and even the Giants are doing behind you. You can kind of look at the teams ahead of you and keep trying to chase those teams down. Yeah. Tyler says in the chat, Arizona has back-to-back series versus Cleveland and Philly this week. Need to keep winning in hope for some separation. Yeah. Diamondbacks at Guardians this week. And then they got the Phillies this weekend. And the Dodgers are hosting with Phillies tonight, so in a series. So I mean a chance for the Padres maybe to make up some ground. Padres are playing the Pirates in the Marlins. Right. And the Pirates aren't bad. They're not bad. But you're better. But you should be better. You're not facing Paul Skeens who the Diamondbacks mean beat. They didn't hand Paul Skeens a loss yesterday, but they did win that game to remain pretty darn hot. So this could be an opportunity week for the San Diego Padres. We'll obviously get into all of that. Take our first break. We'll come back and set the menu for what we have on this Monday. The penultimate show before Woods returns from vacation on Wednesday morning. Obviously, we'll talk a lot about what happened over the weekend at Peco Park and the homestand. All coming up. It's Ben. It's Paulie. Glad to have you with us on a Monday morning. Let's make this a good week. Kelly's got traffic and we are off and running on San Diego's number one sports station 97-3 the fan. As Paulie mentioned, he's wearing his yellow Padres spring training hat, but also getting some comments about the shirt you are wearing today, Paulie. If you're on our YouTube stream, Dylan see snow hitter. It's just the July the stat line. Yeah. It's all kind of bundled up. Second San Diego franchise history, but yeah, it's bundled into a profile of his head with like a little space just for the mustache there. Yeah. It's very clever. It's a prior society. Very clever. Not the most recent no hitter in major league baseball though. Congratulations to our friend Blake Snell about that on his no hitter on Friday for the San Francisco Giants. Not only a no hitter and his first no hitter, but the first time that not only Blake Snell has ever pitched a complete game, and this one was the part that's done me the first time he's ever even thrown a pitch in the ninth inning in a game in his entire career. This is a guy who's won two Cy Young Awards. I like that. And he had never even thrown a pitch in the ninth inning in his career, and he seemed to really enjoy being able to change that narrative a little bit like I told you I could do it. Everyone said I couldn't do it. Well, I mean, they had some evidence that you couldn't for many, many, many years. You would give them six strong and then, you know, you'd turn 103 pitches because you're not efficient. Well, yeah, you weren't going to go deep and go into the ninth inning, but walked three still. I thought it was great. I watched. I watched the ninth inning on MLB networks switched over in the middle of the Padres game, watched the final three outs and yeah, man, I was happy for I switched over just a hair too late. They were embracing and the mound when I switched over. That was fast. I thought they were just going to the ninth inning. Maybe his most efficient inning. Just go, wait, wait, I thought we were just about to start the ninth, but I did I miss something there? Yeah, I guess I did miss something. I was already hugging on the mound when I turned it on real quick out. And then the final hurdle is Ellie Taylor Cruz, who just like, all right, if you're going to get it, you got to earn this one and he got a line drive out to the right center field. A little hop on the catch made of everyone, a little nervous, I think out there, but like with Dylan Cece's no hitter, the last swing looked the most hitter-ish at the end. Line drive that looked like it might fall, Bryce Johnson made the catch. So a similar method of ending the no hitter for Blake Snelson. Congratulations to Blake Snelt. Keeping the the Giants kind of on the fringe of the wildcard race, they're four and a half games out after taking their series over the weekend, but still behind the Pirates Cardinals, Mets, and then the three teams that are in the wildcard standings coming up on the program today. Well, let's give you the second half of the program because looking forward to having joining us in studio to kind of guest host in our eight o'clock hour and beyond usually comes in on Mondays just on the phone. But Sammy Levitt's going to sit in with us and help recap the weekend that was with the San Diego Padres and get a lot of good Padres chat with the very knowledgeable, very hard working. Sam Levitt, very handsome. I saw him on in person on Saturday, I was down in the dugout, got to see Sammy, got to see mud, talk with mud for a few minutes, saw a scan, talked to AJ Preller, best wishes by the way to the Padres general manager who is on the injured list right now. Oh, no. He has the same injury as Justin Herbert, the quarterback of the Los Angeles Chargers, tourist planter fascia. And so he's going to be out for a little bit from it's going to make it hard to run and cut and dribble on the basketball. Exactly. That's what he's out from. He'll give you all the GMing, which maybe Padres fans are happy now, now he has nothing to occupy any time whatsoever other than caring about his baseball team, which is kind of dumb at this point because after the trade deadline and after the draft, it's probably, I mean, I'm sure they're already looking at next year's prospects and they're always scouting the entire league, but it really is the quieter part of the year for a GM. You've really done everything you can do. There may be a, you know, I'm sure, I don't even know. You know, if he like goes on vacations, I'm talking ever, like during the off season, I don't think he does, but if there was ever a time to at least just like take a step back and breathe for a couple of days, it'd be right now. But then it's, this is the most stressful part of the year as well because all you can do is you put together the team and now, are they going to sink or swim? Did I do a good job or did I do a bad job? And sure, you can call up guys from AAA and make some moves down the stretch to, you know, on the margins to try to help your team, but the big stuff is done for now and now it's up to the hands of the players and the manager and the coaches of whether or not they can pull it off. So did get C.A.J. I talked to him, got to see Buddy Black, manager of the Colorado Rockies who mentioned that enjoys listening to this program, Paulie, when he, when he gets the opportunity, he says we make him laugh, which I thought that's very nice of you, buddy, but I hadn't seen but in a couple of years, I missed him totally last year on the Rockies, a couple of visits to San Diego. So I wanted to make a point, went over, said hello to Buddy and yeah, so he's, he's at least a partial tier one when he gets the opportunity to listen to the Ben & Woods program, which is nice. The more managers in the national league that we can get listening to this program, I think the better. We know we got Mike Schilt every week. We know we got Skip Schumacher as a die-hard tier one. We know we've got now Buddy Black. I suspect that Dave Roberts, even though he takes his shots, will tune in on occasion, especially since he lives here in San Diego. I don't know about Bob Melvin, whether he, you know, we've had him obviously on the ton, but whether he's stuck with us after he's gone to San Francisco. My guests would be maybe not, didn't go that well for him last year, doesn't want the reminder of 2023 anymore, you know, staring him in his face, probably hurts to hear us talking about the Padres winning under Mike Schilt and doing so well this year. So maybe we've lost him. Tori Levua. I think he's like the show. Honestly, he's proud. He seems like a pretty cool guy and he kind of gets it. I think so too. I think he liked the show. We need to get someone to make sure Tori's watching in the morning. We can get the whole N.L. West for sure, part of the N.L. East. The central, I don't know, we're going to get, I don't know if Craig Council is ever going to be a tier one, but we'll just start working on that. Maybe Adam will send us to Diamondback's training, spring training for a day, scout the competition, and we can get a sit down with Tori, and maybe Schilt can get Ollie Marmal to start listening and just, hey, these guys are great, you know, this former bench coach there. He can probably help it out. So, you know, the more N.L. managers we have listening to this program, the better. So we will go through the whole weekend, including our Padres wrap up coming up next for yesterday's 10 to 2 win over the Rockies, which is a, this is a nice thing, a Sunday win. Actually, 2 out of 3 Sunday wins. It got so bad, remember last week that Paulie had to create an AI generated song about the Padres inability to win on Sundays in the theme of bro country. Yeah. Sunday slump. Sunday slump. There's a team down at Caled by the sun, kiss, babe, with a nickname from the Padres, but they can't seem to play. Come Sunday afternoons, they just fold and fade away. So yeah, it kind of goes on when it's about, well, about the Padres inability to win on Sundays. Now that they're trying to flip that narrative, we thought it's only fair if we, if we go into the AI machine again, and what was the prompt that you put in this time, Paulie? This prompt was a song about the San Diego Padres, finally winning a baseball game on a Sunday by beating the mighty Colorado Rockies in the style of bro country. Let's hear it. This is called Padres Sunday Miracle. Hey, this is Papier, I get it, you know. Sometimes hitting the down the fresh, San Diego Padres chasing that question. Last place of enforcement some days, Rocky's laughing, they played the best. Padres line up looking sharp today. picture throw a heatless, make them pay. Crouch going wild, cheers and sway. Rockies feel the pressure start to fray. It's a Padres Sunday Miracle Hell yeah. Hahaha. Hands out of their seats, hands are left. Rocky stopped by the local fair. And hi, very well done. Hot dogs must have beered, man. Some birthdays, balltans never play, those calls divine, everything's so grand. Padres stand tall, Rockies understand. I'm feeling tension, hard, down and fast. Maybe instead of the Padres rapid, we just come up with a new song for every single game. I could probably do. We could. All right, Padres, the 10 to 2 winners, just plug in all the stats, you know, who did well, who had a home run, get some names in there and good, you know, everybody John from KSON just walked past the hall here, we're going to have to play that for him. I got to send that over and be like, dude, this has KSON written all over, it sounds like literally every song on KSON. He should be here in about 40 minutes for take on John, we got a brand new prize this month. By the way, a great, great Las Vegas getaway. We'll tell you all about that coming up. Don't do this and more, but up next, our Padres wrap up. We'll hear Jesse's calls of the 10 to 2 win over the Colorado Rockies from yesterday. Coming up next, Ben Pauli on San Diego's number one sports station, 97 3, the fan. The more Olympic news for you this morning, it looks like Simone Biles just had her last routine or exercise individual event. Tom Brady was there to watch it. Look like it was pretty spectacular, though, just so she got the silver and Jordan Chiles got the bronze, so someone beat her, which is impressive. But what an amazing Olympics it's been for Simone Biles, yes, sharing the wealth a little bit. Yeah, well, you want some different color jewelry, they can't all be gold, right? So mix and match in the jewelry closet for Simone Biles and, yeah, they've transitioned now. Swimming into the yesterday, gymnastics wraps up today and now you're fully featured kind of on track and now you're going to get into the metal rounds for things like basketball, men's and women's basketball. You start, I think the U.S. men have their quarter final coming up tomorrow against Brazil and U.S. women who have been dominating. They play next on Thursday in the quarterfinals. So second question about the Olympics real quick before we get to our Padres wrap up, we're much older than I am you've seen more Olympics than I have. I'm 33 years old in my life. I have seen the likes of Michael Phelps, his whole career just dominate. You say in bolts, Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky. I've seen so many athletes that are deemed one of, if not the greatest of all time. I mean, are athletes just evolving? Are we two in the moment or are these really the best Olympic athletes of all time? Yeah, they're the best now. In fact, I saw a video which was pretty telling. They showed, I don't know what it was, the 100 meter, 200 meter swimming final and they had the video from the 1932 Olympics in black and white and they did it side by side just to show you how far ahead like the last place finisher now would be seconds ahead of the first place finisher in 1932. So yeah, absolutely. We're not just getting caught up in any hype. Simone Biles is the ghost. She is the ghost. Yeah. I mean, it's all comparative. The story of like Mary Lou Rhetton in 1984, becoming the first woman to win the all around gold with the vault on the, you know, the injured ankle and she sticks it and lands it. It's an Olympic legend. It's a fantastic story for sure. She couldn't get as high do as many flips, you know, the difficulty of the tricks. We've seen that in all Olympic sports. We see it in, in figure skating in the winter sports where they're doing like quad jumps now, you know, they, women used to used to just do double jumps and, you know, triple was extremely rare. Now the guys, you know, as someone's going to do like a quintuple jump at some point, they're just the athletes keep getting better and better and better. That's, uh, that's just evolution and better training techniques and more knowledge just being put into play. You're seeing the best. Now, I mean, you know, the world records will tell you that their world records fall. I mean, sometimes the world record will hold up and you know, that'll, that'll kind of give you a comparison like, okay, this person was pretty good if their world record is held up for 12 years because despite all the advances in training techniques, some of those do hold up. So you keep an eye on those. But I think for the most part, you know, athletes just keep getting better and better. All right. Let's, um, let's check traffic. When we come back, Paulie's got all the Jesse's calls from yesterday's tend to win over the Rockies. Our Padres wrap up next here on 97 three, the fan, I love winning, man. I love, I love when you know what I'm saying? It's like better than losing. Oh my God. I'm so stiff. Miss any of the Padres win yesterday, Ben and Woods didn't what I proved. We've got you covered with all of the highlights. I like it with the Padres win. It's the Padres wrap up presented by Hamoul Casino with rilling slots and tables in all the best rewards. Hamoul Casino has all the fun you're looking for. Hamoul Casino fun above all else. Give me a due damage. So three and two Bogart's runs, Meryl swings hits it towards the right center gap. Cave is on the move. He's not going to get there. It's up against the base of the wall. Bogart's rounding 30 is going to score. Meryl halts it second as the throw comes in not in time and RBI double and a one-nothing Padres lead. Pitch on the way. Right hand hitter swings hits it in the air to deep left field. Bro far is back of the wall, jerks in, trying to measure it up. He will leap and he could not make the catch. Into the first row, I think a guy caught it in his hat and a home run for Doyle. This is a tie game one-one in the fourth inning. Though your hits it well in the air to deep right, Peralta is back. He feels for the wall, leaps up and he made the catch. Up at the top of the fence in right field, David Peralta went to get it and won away here in the fifth. First pitch to Agassioka. Into the air to deep left field, Hilliard is back in the wall, leaps up to go. Line drive, home run, Kyle Agassioka. First pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Padres hop in front, it's two to one. Two-oh, Brocar hits it into the air. Deep to right field, Dave is back, he will watch it, will go, home run, jerks in pro far. 19th of the season and a second of the inning for the Padres, they now lead it three to one. Runners at first and second, here's the one and one. Peralta swings, hits it into the air, deep to right field, Dave is racing back, going to turn around to watch and it's going to go. A three-run homer for David Peralta. Great train on the tracks in San Diego and he continues to torment the Rockies. This is now a six to one game. Price Johnson in a playwright field for Peralta, for one pitch into the air, deep down the left field line, pro far over to watch, this one, going to go. Once again, Jacob Stolings leaves the yard, second to second today, he has homered, another solo shot for the Rockies and now a six to two game here in the seventh. Here's the 0-2, Manny swings, crosses into the air to deep right center, loyal on the run, not going to get there, little one-half over the wall, a rule book, double to bring home pro far, but John has got a seven-game hitting streak and the Padres have a 7-2 lead. One add to the Peralta North, pitch on the way, Jake swings into the air, down the right field line and is hooking and that's a fair ball up against the wall in the corner. Higashiyoka has scored, a rise is coming in, he will score a two-run double for Jake Peralta North and a Padre lead is 9-2, Botsui ready, a little lefty delivers and a swing and a mess, back to back case to end it and the ball game is over, the series is over and the Padres have slayed the dragon, they defeat the Rockies 10-2, man was nice, good ball game, well done, Matty did a nice job, got better as it went, as he kind of does, but was good early too, which was beneficial and got us into the sixth and then we were able to add on from there. Paulie did you have a little uh, not just, you got a little excited, didn't you just get a little over excited perhaps, or finally, I get it, the Rockies, he took two out of three from the mighty Colorado Rockies, it warrants the dragon up there in the Rocky Mountains, this gives the Padres so much trouble. Botsui ready, a little lefty delivers and a swing and a mess, back to back case to end it and the ball game is over, the series is over and the Padres have slayed the dragon, they defeat the Rockies 10-2, yeah it feels that way, that's for sure. I mean look, I know we're gonna get into all three of the games, but just to jump back to Friday real quick, who among us wasn't going, oh Jesus God not again, again? The Rockies again? That's how I was feeling. I was uh, I was almost physically ill thinking about having to, after Friday, thinking about having to come in here on Monday, after a series loss or heaven forbid, Padres get swept in home again by a dollar on the Rockies. You're just, the doomer is going, all right, they're gonna lose on Sunday because hashtag Sunday and then you're like, will they scratch went out on Saturday or are we gonna be getting swept and we have to come in and talk about that on Monday? Yeah, I mean we're a doomer fan base, there's no doubt, I mean, I don't think that's an insult, we're waiting for the next bad thing to happen as a fan base and I think we will until a lot of good things happen for your Sandy and the Padres. Good things are happening right now though, it was good to see the Padres not only break out offensively, but start with Mount Walter and who avoided the first inning struggles that plagued him the last couple of starts at a very efficient first inning when five and two thirds gave up just two hits, one earned run, two walks, seven strikeouts in the, the knuckle ball was as lively as we've seen maybe all season, maybe two lively actually, it, it caused problems not only for the, the hitters on the Rockies, but certainly for Kyle Gashiyoka who had more balls clanging off his mitt, I think than ever before, even Waldron, he had one where it was heading toward the outside corner and then hit the guy because it, it swerved so much in the lane all the way into the batter and he had no, it was moving so much, he had no idea where it was going. Ultimately though, it's pretty effective, a solid win, his seventh win of the season and then of course after a slow start against Cal Quantrell offensively, Jackson Merrill helped get things going, had the, the RPA double in the second inning, but it's still one-one until the fifth and then you heard the two home runs, big swings by Kyle Gashiyoka and Jurik Sin pro far, two guys coming into this season that well, there was Peralta been in the fifth inning. I was just, those two swings in the fifth by those two guys who we knew they were going to be, we knew they were on the pot race, we saw them in spring training, we talked to them both and we were hoping that they could both be good, kind of backup type contributors for the pod race, role players, role players for the pod race. You had told me that August 5th here we're sitting and they have combined for 32 home runs, those two guys, Higashiyoka and pro far, say you're out of your, out of your mind, Jurik Sin's never had more than 20 in a season and Kyle Gashiyoka has never had more than 10 in a season. If they both had, could match their career years, which is incredibly unlikely, then maybe they could get up to like 30 combined for the whole season. They're already at 32 and they're still over 50 games left in the season. That's, that's nuts what the pod race are getting from those two guys. Absolutely crazy. And then huge game for David Peralta, just when you're thinking, and maybe, maybe age is catching up with them, he hasn't, he hasn't been hitting great lately. It's not only the, the huge catch though, maybe home run robbing, maybe top of the wall, double robbing one or the other, but then the, the three run home run that really put it out of reach there in the sixth inning and let the pod race pull away and not have to use any of their, you know, highest leverage relievers at the end. Give them an extra day off going into a Monday, Manny's been hot, two for four, double to RBI. He's got a seven game hitting streak quietly after he was hot. And then he kind of cooled off actually on the road trip out of the all-star break, but he is, he's heated up again and had a couple of absolutely insane throws from the third base coaches box over the week. He did the, the one in the, well, both on Saturday, the eighth inning one, and then the one that Jake made a terrific play on in the ninth inning, getting the tag for that first out and helping Robert Suarez do what was ultimately an easy save. And we'll talk, we'll talk more about that coming up on Saturdays and Fridays games before, but yesterday they did what they had to do. In fact, they have, I kept alive at least the possibility the pod race have of still winning the season series against the Colorado Rockies. I mean, they need to win every single game. They have three more in Colorado. I think that's coming up pretty fast here in like less than two weeks. They'll go to Denver on their, not this road trip, whatever the following road trip is, they go to Denver. Not this, so this weekend they're in Miami. It's the next weekend. They come back home for just a quick home stay from tonight, three games against the pirates, and then they go back out on the road Friday, Saturday, Sunday against the Rockies. So yeah, not this weekend, but next weekend, then they, that's it. They don't have to face the Colorado Rockies again. And quite frankly, I'm okay with that. You know, they were supposed to be a team you were going to beat up on this season. And the Dodgers were the team that you were just hoping not to beat up on you too bad. And it's been the exact opposite. Pontry's have already won the season series against the Dodgers. They are hanging on for dear life to try not to lose the season series to the Colorado Rockies, but they have two down three to go if they, if they still want to just buy the slimmest of margins win that season series against the Colorado Rockies. I was hoping they go, what, 10 and three. Now they are at best, could be seven and six. And they have to win the last three to do that. They're four and six right now against the Colorado Rockies, but better than a, better than two and eight, which, you know, they could have been had they not got the jobs done on Saturday and Sunday. So yeah, Pontry's now tied with the Braves for the top wild card spot in the National League as they get ready to head out on the road this week. Sam Levitt's going to be in studio. He actually tweeted out the pitching matchups for this upcoming series late late last night. I'm not sure when he got the information. I hadn't seen it until Sammy's tweet about three or four hours ago, but Dylan sees and Michael King will both pitch in the first two games of the series in Pittsburgh. And then they got a TVA for the Thursday morning game that wraps up the series. Bailey falter is going to go in the opener now for the pirates left handed to pitcher tomorrow and then Marco Gonzalez on on Wednesday. And I forget who's pitching on Thursday, but that's that's what the Padres at least announced for the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates coming up a team that is, you know, fallen back. They're only a game above 500. This is pretty much their season. If the Padres come in and sweep them or take two out of three, they're kind of out of the wild card race for the most part. So this is going to be a big one for them coming up this week in Pittsburgh, looking forward to the next three days starting tomorrow. All right, Joe Musgrove had his minor league rehab start yesterday, get you an update on that. If you didn't see how it went last night, get to that take on John coming up next year on 97 3 the fan. So even big leaguers aren't immune to the same travel difficulties that we all have to suffer through in our daily lives welcome back Ben and Paulie here with you would see me back on Wednesday Sam Levitt in studio in an hour from now going to join us and co host this program. Oh yeah you feel like oh big league big league charter travel you've got you know team planes and stuff it's as nice as it gets you know they take your bags at the ballpark you hop on a bus you drive onto the tarmac you get right on the plane there's no security no nothing same thing when you get where you're going get right off hop on a bus get to the hotel it's the best possible travel essentially but there always are exceptions and Joe Musgrove ran into that this weekend. I don't know if you saw the story but he was always scheduled to make a Sunday rehab appearance and the potteries were kind of coy about where it was going to be but usually what you want to do obviously you want to get him against the right you know competition but mostly you want to reward one of your affiliates by sending one of your stars down and giving him a good home game you know hey that's going to draw some people to in this case it was supposed to be San Antonio the missions double A and he'll face some double A batters you know pitch whatever three to four innings and maybe draw some extra fans and they get a chance to say hey we got to see Joe Musgrove pitch here in San Antonio that's actually a pretty cool thing from minor league fan base problem though Joe wanted to stick around and watch the game on Saturday so instead of taking the early afternoon flight he was booked on the latest flight to San Antonio southwest out of Lindbergh field and then he found out right as he was heading to the airport that flight got canceled for whatever reason and there were no other flights to San Antonio they were going to get him there for the for the Sunday game so this is not a last minute changing plans no no then the Padres had to do a quick pivot and well where can we get Joe to like Elson or his clothes except they're on the road so they had to send him up to Fresno to pitch on the road for the lake elson or storm last night in low single a ball now you know pitches are pitches and it doesn't really matter and he did get up to Fresno and ended up pitching three and a third innings four hits two earn runs no walks two strikeouts the good news was according to at least the the Fresno broadcasters you know it's the technology in minor league ballparks isn't quite what it is in major league ball 94 to 96 consistently and he certainly was throwing strikes Joe threw 43 pitches in his three and a third innings 35 of them were strikes maybe too much in the strike zone a couple of times did give up as I said the four hits and a couple of runs but I'd say for the most part you'd rather see that than a guy who's struggling to find his own and walks a bunch of guys so I would say mission accomplished obviously they'll evaluate how he feels and uh he's hopping on a I think a flight from Fresno to Pittsburgh to join the team uh in Pittsburgh they left after the game yesterday so pottery is already there so when he's eligible to return uh what's the next what's the updated timeline looking like so they can bring him back now whenever they want they'll have to activate him off the uh the 60 day injured list but when he's ready they can have him start it's kind of decision time now either they can send him down for another rehab start and then probably after that he could come back to the big leagues or or there's talk that he could be back uh in this road trip and maybe pitch pitch this weekend in Miami as his first start and I I kind of wonder as as we mentioned that the potteries have TBA on their on their list for Thursday if that that won't be Joe they won't throw him on three days rest on Thursday in in Pittsburgh all right kid you want to come back just to be clear but you may change your plan depending on how the first two days go if both you know Dylan Cease and Michael King go fairly deep into games and you get a really rested bullpen you may go with Martin Perez on four days rest on on Thursday and feel like okay we're going well we could bring Joe back then this weekend we could skip Randy Vasquez in the turn then um and you know he's he's not a guy we've talked about a lot we talked about King in terms of the innings limit and how much he's got left right Vasquez is also pitching more than probably anyone thought he was going to in the starting rotation this year and eating up innings that he has not pitched in before and if they want to save him a little bit for September he's not going to be in the pottery starting rotation knock on wood in like a playoff series but he might be your you know your swing guy your long reliever that comes in if you need a guy early in a game somewhere either in late September or in October so you want to save some of those innings in case you know you need him in more situations that are important later in the year so you may want to skip a Randy Vasquez and again I you know speculating last week about what why they were you know skipping Michael King was a pretty simple explanation that Mike Schult gave us on Friday it's just dealing with that that comebacker that him and Kath and he did throw a bullpen on Saturday and his schedule now to go in the pirate series so don't want to over speculate about the TBA on Thursday but I would I would imagine that Joe's return and how the first two games and Martin Perez how well he threw on Saturday all kind of factors into the decision of who they're going to give that start to in the series finale against the pirates yeah they uh it's you got like another week or two before it's really crunch time you got a little bit of I don't want to say flexibility because we don't have the flexibility we don't have a ton of depth right now for starting pitching but man you don't want to be having bullpen games like in September as server board watching continues and and this wildcard race heats up if it takes another week to really get Joe and a hundred percent right and ready to go for the stretch do whatever it takes and if Joe comes back and and is you know Joe like and Martin Perez can do anything like he did on Saturday god what an outing then the pot is you probably should be okay when it comes to enough starting pitching to get them to the end of the season we'll talk more about that coming up right now though we need to contest it for take on john john's going to be here in for woods again and we've got a brand new prize here in august it's a really good one it's second so yeah pot raise rotation is um a little bit in flux but maybe looking upward with the potential return of joe must grove here if not this road trip then certainly next week probably at the latest assuming no setbacks assuming you know he comes out of yesterday's uh start in fresno feeling pretty good uh that's uh that's good news for the for the san diego pot raise going forward no no updates on you darfish i didn't see any this weekend other than the um continuing to offer him his support and they'll he'll let he'll let the pot raise know when he's ready to come back off the restricted list but uh that now i'm not even counting on that that would just be like a bonus what was um what was just out of curiosity what was the status of his health before the restricted list he was almost back i think he was getting closed to a return so hopefully as long as he's doing basic extra time yes yeah i mean he'll have to work build up again obviously if he comes back for probably a couple of minor league starts but i think the health was improving all right i see some contestants on the line let's get to it new prize let's take on john it's time for take on woods what what all about you we will get to you in just a second i'll get them right now i'll bend tells you all right i will i will start don't do this because last week poly told you about a story i think in the rattle report about the uh the documentary series that was going to feature the story of connor stallions the uh the michigan you know unofficial assistant who was at the center of last year's uh you know science stealing scandal uh you know the advanced scouting of michigan opponents trying to you know get an edge on you know michigan opponents and what did jim harbaugh and the michigan coaching staff really know about this uh you know turned out you know they kind of give him a slap on the wrist but i ended up not really having any punishments last year well the uh draft of the nc double a notice of allegations has been obtained by espn so essentially the findings of the investigation and not only do the coaches know about it but they are facing major penalties including new michigan head coach sharon more who's one of uh seven members of the program accused of violating nc double a rules more in particular is allegedly deleted a thread of 52 text messages with connor stallions in october 2023 on the same day that the media reports came out that revealed stallions was leading the effort to capture the play calling signals of future opponents so that in and of itself is a pretty big no-no and then by the way for everyone to said well jim harbaugh didn't didn't know any of this the the draft allegations say that jim harbaugh is facing level one violations and that possibly he could even be given a show cause penalty which means he wouldn't be allowed to come back to college football without facing severe penalties and possibly several years dispension so everyone who said it's a nothing story it's not in you know not important they didn't really get an advantage lancey double a seems to think otherwise and is taking this pretty seriously more could be suspended for a game or two it looks like early in the season and and harbaugh may never be able to come back now maybe he's not going to maybe that's why he went and took the head coaching job with the l_a_ chargers but you know after deny and you know downplay and try to make it seem like it wasn't anything the nc double a seems to have found otherwise in the case of connor stallions michigan football it's too bad that the coach is anytime something like this happens they can just jump ship go to the n_f_l_ you know fall up and be free of any consequence now michigan may still face some of these consequences but harbaugh is essentially scott was harbaugh in particular as long as he stays in thing u_s_c_ jump ship went to the n_f_l_ and then winning a super bowl like it's too bad it should like enough of a partnership with the n_f_l_ in the n_f_l_ and should there be like a agreement between the n_f_l_ in the n_f_l_ the n_f_l_ hey if your coach gets penalized then yeah there has to be some sort of suspension enforcement on their new job in the n_f_l_ who says no to that besides the coach in the chargers would probably say no to that at this point i mean the n_f_l_ doesn't want to be held to some other organizations rules i get that but it is a bad look obviously and you know jim harbaugh will get off scott free because he's no longer coaching at michigan he did serve a three game suspension but show cause and level one that's serious in nc double a terms all right let's go to the olympics we mentioned him earlier in the show and we teased for don't do this the broadcast is the don't do this here for the 100 meter sprint the men's gold medal race and no a liles did win but you wouldn't have known that if you were just listening to the broadcast here's how it sounded there's an olympic gold medal waiting for somebody who wants it the most this is close jim mike is gonna do it on w they're working on the photo no a liles is looking anxiously it's no a liles and it had to go to a photo finish to decide it yes uh no liles won even though they said jim mike is gonna do it he's not you makin he's not he's racing for team usa and uh yeah look i mean those guys are moving so fast the entire like your entire call for that race is what nine seconds eight seconds whatever the the final score like it was it goes so fast but you have to be perfectly correct in how you phrase it sure but i mean everyone knew it was incredibly close i mean incredibly close yeah jim mike didn't like run away with it and there was no like signal given who the winner is right across is the line it's not like an out at first base and even like when don or jesse is calling it out at first base if it's really close they'll sold out but you know hold all tickets for a second right they may want to review this one because we do let's go he didn't even give it he didn't even give it like a but maybe not let's wait just a second to see i think jamaica might have won but it was so close i'm gonna go to a photo finish he was just confidently declaring jamaica the winner and i don't know what he was thinking now when they replayed it in the prime time version last night they kind of they didn't redo the race but they kind of added quick context and edited it did out a little bit so it didn't sound quite as bad as it did on the original call because there was actually more time that passed between they talked for like 30 seconds about jamaica's win yes before they actually even realized that it was a photo finish and that it's possibly that that jamaica did not win the gold medal and it's the you got yeah one chance every four years on this to get it right that's a pretty bad botching of a call of a 10 second race good luck maybe in four more years if you get that opportunity to call it again yeah well i'm gonna make this a hybrid that's the don't do this for this story the do do this d d mega do do is uh is no allows i i think he is a entertaining and fascinating athlete he came to light he made headlines nationally a few years back we played it on the show remember he was talking about the um the nba championship and i think he was at like the world championship track meet or whatever and he was talking about like i was watching the nba finals and they crowned the winner the world champions he goes the world champions of what the united states like i'm out here with guys with their flags around them racing for their country determining who is actually the best in the world and some people agreed with him a lot of people didn't agree with him and i think all of the basketball world is kind of rooting against him or at least watching paying attention so huge flex for him to say that and then a couple years later go out and win gold win a world championship and then uh he posted on social media yesterday after the win no allow says i have asthma allergies dyslexia 80d anxiety and depression but i will tell you that what you have does not define what you can become why not you yeah i saw that i saw that that that was cool and well i will save it the nba all the best players in the world play in the nba and while the teams are all american except for the toronto raptors i think it's fairly safe to call the nba champion the world champion the most is that i have to watch the nba finals and they have world champion on they head world champion of what the united states okay me wrong i i love the u.s at times but that ain't the world that is not the world we are the world we have almost every country out here fighting thriving putting on they flagged the show that they are represented they ain't no flags in the nba i see i see his point i'm in the world series i mean so he could say the same thing but i mean the japanese champion it was the korean champion it was an interesting couple segments uh across sports radio a couple years back sure it was and then just a quick a quick update from a story from mega do do last week good news for uh donters first baseman franny freeman and his wife uh who said yesterday that their three-year-old son maximus is home from the hospital very scary was being treated for gian bar syndrome a rare neurological disorder uh it was touch and go for a while it was in the hospital for several days but uh max they say has a still long road ahead of him to regain his strength and relearn how to walk but we're so thankful to have our family uh back together again so best wishes again and i see pod race fans sharing that sentiment even though he's a dodger it's a freddy freeman and his family and his son max for a hopefully a full recovery and glad that he's gotten home and out of the hospital and hopefully uh hopefully out of out of harm's way for now i hate the dodgers they are my least like team in all of sports but uh this is a little bit bigger than baseball saw that update i just can't imagine how scary that was and yeah he's got a long road ahead of him but uh wishing him all the best and that's uh don't and do do this for a monday that was don't do this with bennen woods on 97 3 the fan all right we went through a sunday's game i want to talk a but i guess you have to start jumping in here poly it is play fantasy football anymore but i am not naive in knowing that wide receivers can make or break your team so i guess if there was gonna be a position specific odyssey podcast wide receivers would be the one you want to know who's a uh a big proponent of drafting wide receivers early tommy fans he talked about that last night on sunday's baseball said he goes receiver receiver receiver while he was playing left field but now you know some of the other guys are choosing receivers he may need to pivot a little bit that was part of the discussion i was i was definitely intrigued to see tommy fan miked up for the uh st louis cardinals last night as they took on and lost to the jacago cubs on sunday night baseball i wasn't sure i mean you can you said it last week right so the uh espn broadcast requested i said something about the audio from tommy fam uh of like of from adam talking about getting into a fight when he got into a fight and it was about fantasy football wasn't it no no i think this didn't he who did he slap because of fantasy football was jock peterson yeah he slapped jock peterson that's when he said the i'm a good fighter yeah my new moi tie and i but i thought i was gonna do with the fan maybe that was about the fans because i thought when he slapped jock he was not with the padre's anymore and he was still defending the padre's well he obviously still cares because one thing that tommy did say was he won the arizona diamondbacks fantasy football league last year which obviously they did the draft probably you know in this time of the year when he was there helping them in their playoff push and then he obviously left and he signed with the white socks and he said they promised they'd have a ceremony for him when he came back and they went back in june with the white socks played a three-game series in arizona and there was no ceremony and tommy being tommy you think that he's joking when he says he's kind of mad about it but i don't think tommy jokes about anything i think he's legitimately mad that they didn't have some sort of ceremony for him for winning the fantasy football league and i'm pretty sure he's filing that away and is going to hate the arizona diamondbacks and everything about them forever because they didn't give him his fantasy football championship ceremony when he returned with the white socks back in june i'm a very good fighter you know i don't i don't do muy tai kung fu in box for no reason he also said he's now working on shooting he started started shooting he said well if i'm going to be in the olympics maybe i'll do one of those shooting events he said i'm just like a c right now but after i retire maybe i will i will get locked in and could get up to like olympic level of shooting so that was uh that was tommy fam on uh sunday night baseball last night and what what he had to say during his his steamy outfit i did check the cardinals don't they've already gone to arizona so he does not have another chance to go to arizona get that fancy football ceremony ceremony that he wants all right let's check traffic um want to talk about friday and saturday's games and how obviously the wins this weekend kind of changed the perception of what happened on friday night get to that after kelly here on united seven three the fan so friday night was a very twenty twenty four padre's moment you come off a sweep of the dodgers a two-game sweep and then you lose to the colorado rockies actually already happened earlier this year when the padre's won a series from the dodgers and then get swept by the colorado rockies earlier this year but i watched friday night's game and my my instinct was telling me that that was not necessarily a game that you should be totally panicking about it wasn't the best game obviously the padre's have ever played but randy vasquez got through his five innings three hits one run you know austin gomber for whatever reason and you could say austin gomber's not a very good picture pitches well against the padre's every time and some pitchers just do well against certain lineups it's just good matchups and they just have trouble with austin gomber and it's not once it's not twice it's been several starts now that austin gomber gives the padre's problems and he did and they still had a chance to win that game they fought and they took the two one lead and they did what they kind of had to do to sneak out a win and then they had the bull pen set up on friday with all their high leverage relievers ready to go and jeremya astrada just didn't get it done and i don't you know the biggest problem was obviously the walks to start the inning when they gave up the three run frame when uh it was the sixth inning he let off with a walk that's bad but you can overcome that it was really the second walk and it was a full count pitch right at the top of the zone i think it lit up lit up the zone but he didn't get the call it probably was a strike him out throw him out double play if he gets the call it's a completely different situation uh then he gets the uh the one out rbi two rbi single by chris brian which wasn't hit hard it was off the end of the bat but you know floated into center field and then he had a jake cave opposite field kind of dribbler for the next rbi and those innings are going to happen whether you're the best team in baseball or the worst team you're going to have those innings that just happen and then they just couldn't get anything done against uh you know obviously not very good raki's bullpen that was frustrating so it wasn't a certainly wasn't a good game not one you're gonna you know write down in your memory banks is oh that was a fun night on friday it wasn't it was just all the circumstance around it the timing of it's you know of course eventually you know you're gonna lose games but the highs that we felt last week whether it was the trade deadline you know the the two big wins against the dodgers and then for them to come out friday night and and just knock it anything go yeah i mean you know manny and salana had the home runs but they didn't have anyone on in front of them pro far out of home run taken away from from him that was a phenomenal catch was that dole who made that catch was amazing catch going over well over the the wall there in center field uh to rob pro far so i mean yeah there were some things that went against the pod rays in that game still it wasn't a great game but why say that the next two games completely changed the the perception is that it confirmed what i thought on friday that it wasn't necessarily the sign of something bad to come it was just you know the best teams are only going to win 60 percent of their games i mean the raki's the worst team they're going to win 30 to 40 percent of their games so even in a three game series the best team against the worst team you're really thinking two out of three most of the time can the pod rays come back and take two out of three against a bad team if you're a good team they're all the way i always like to see it is that you probably have one game where you blow them out you have one game where you win close and you'll have one game where you lose close that's that's typically how a three game series against an inferior opponent goes and in the end after the weekend that's exactly what happened that's exactly what happened the pod rays close win came on saturday and that was the nerve racking game obviously of the series the game you had the most questions about it with martin perez you're having a get from him yeah if the pod ray said they knew what they were going to get from him they were lying they didn't and they didn't really say that they did but they had to be absolutely thrilled with the six innings three hits one run on a solo home run seven strikeouts that that was the most shocking part of martin perez is outing because he's not a guy who gets a ton of swing and miss and he's got a good change up but he did on saturday he flummoxed the Rockies for six innings now tenor goodman did the same thing a guy with an adra don't know what was going on offensively with the pod rays were just still in that funk only got one hit but they did manufacture one small ball run with the the help of that jackson marrow sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning to get it tied and then finally they rallied in the seventh uh you know get the back the single by cronow worth the double by manny zander rbi single and the marrow sacrifice fly uh just enough to hold on for the three to two win after tanner scott made his ponderase debut on saturday did allow a solo home run to jacob stallings ended a streak of 17 and two thirds scoreless innings for the nationally reliever of the month uh with the miami marlins for the month of july but you also saw in those other at bats why tanner scott was so valuable and i mean he had some nasty movement on those bitches that one pitch yeah just good swing on it and got him but uh you saw what was so appealing for the pod rays about tanner scott when they um when they you know sent a pretty big halt to the marlins to acquire him at the trade deadline manny made that phenomenal play uh in foul territory the one with the great throw and then the one with the throw that was up the line and then jake made the great play in the ninth inning to help robert swar has locked down his 24th save and then the pod rays did what you know they needed to do pulled away yesterday for the ten to two wins so you got your big win you got your close win you got your close loss that's there's nothing to complain about there's nothing to complain about on a four in one homestead nothing to worry about taking two out of three what's in the past is in the past they can't go and correct that sweep by the Rockies they can't correct the the game that they blew in colorado when they were up what was it nine to four and then they lost ten to nine it was one of the games i was on vacation four and missed but you can't go back in time and fix the mistakes you've already made but you didn't let it snowball into a bigger mistake by losing the series at home to the colorado ride of course it was august second third and fourth this weekend like there's no must wins on august third but when you drop that friday night game it does magnify the pressure like you have you have to come back and get the win on saturday scraped it out three to two and you're like guys you can't lose the series of course you can you know the season is not over if you do but that would just be such a blow to lose that's it is but that's our that's also our mentality the um the Mets lost two or three to the angels that's a huge blow just like when it was when the angels swept the pod race but angels sweeping the pod race and the rocky sweeping the pod race turns out it didn't end the pod race season earlier and this isn't going to end the Mets season either they're not simply done and going away because they lost two or three you just feel like they lose a lot of that momentum that you had been doing sure yeah you know they've made that they've made their life more difficult now they have to come back they're a game and a half out of the last playoff spot and two games behind the Padres and Braves but I guarantee you no one in New York is going you know like the season on fire we're a game and a half out of a playoff spot you know we lost two or three to the angels they're a horrible team but it's gonna happen it probably almost certainly will happen at some point again to the Padres the rest of this season they're not going to win every series of the second half they won the first five they're not going to win every series in the second half of the season I promise you that faith they could have the best record in baseball in the second half there will be a series loss somewhere in there and I think it's our challenge as fans when that happens let's try not to hit the panic button as quickly as we tend to do it's all a matter of how they lose that series well you say that I mean but they go and get just dominated bodied three games in a row by the Marlins I'm gonna come in very pissed off they haven't been bodied in a series I'm saying if that were to happen that would be cause for what the F is happening I get what you're saying yeah next weekend you're right at the Marlins but guess what the Braves just lost two of four to the Marlins at home they lost both games on Saturday and Sunday they lost seven nothing yesterday into the Marlins the team that sold off at the deadline that barely had a roster that Skip Schumacher could put on the field the Atlanta Braves who are going for it again and are leading the wild card race they lost twice in a row at home to the Marlins are are they panicking in Atlanta today maybe I don't know I just feel like we panic a lot faster than other fan bases and I don't know if we have to do it that way guess who's here Sammy Levitt has arrived in studio gonna be co-hosting with us it's been a woods the 97 3 the fan woods continuing his Hawaiian vacation until Wednesday but look who is sitting in woods East chair joining us this morning and very happy to have in studio the pre and post game show host for San Diego Ponderay's baseball here on 97 3 the fan it is Sam Levitt Sammy it is so good to see you so good to have you always appreciate your Monday contributions but this is going above and beyond especially on an off day when the Padres are on the road and you don't have to work to come up this early thank you very much Sammy well my pleasure and as you guys know I am a big tier one I listen well beyond when I'm on the show every Monday at around 8 35 8 40 so good to be here that woodsy guy I mean just leaves town hard of a playoff race unbelievable how hard of a worker is Sammy well we know that that he does I don't know 158 or more of these games a year I mean it's a rare you may take a day off or two for like a wedding or something to go to but you're pretty much gonna work every single game so from spring training when you show up when they report in mid-February until the last hopefully playoff game is over you're working 95 percent of the days for that stretch of time yeah and spring training yeah nowadays so you know so February 15th or so until hopefully yeah hopefully early November and it hasn't been that late yet for the San Diego Padres but as they might as they go my first year in 22 it was long it felt like a real real grind now that was I didn't go to spring training but I also only got here a week before the season started and the whole thing was such a whirlwind by the time it was over I remember yeah yes yeah it was like the weird like we didn't know when we were going to spring training we were waiting on all that to happen Adams like guess what you guys going out next week we're like okay right yeah I remember actually yeah and we while I was in the process of interviewing for this job the lockout was still going on and in my head there was a period of time where I thought to myself well what if what if they don't start till July or what if the season doesn't happen I didn't tell Amarillo for a while that I was you know maybe and I was pretty transparent with them but I didn't tell him for a while because I didn't know what was gonna happen I saw a scenario in my head where I could get this job the season doesn't happen who knows if I actually get onboarded to do the job until whenever and maybe I would you know be back in Amarillo for some portion of the season if because that was the thing the minors were gonna play because they weren't part of the union yet at that time they were gonna play regardless anyway how did that interview go was it just you and Adam or I mean we had an interview with Adam we met him like in a coffee shop yeah I went to the I was late which is usually not a great thing on your interview like you show up late to them you don't get the job yeah the the very first interview which was just Adam just and I remember he was yeah zoom he likes to use the the blurry background have you ever seen that he always likes the blurs background on zoom I remember that uh it was focused in the back yeah it was pretty it was pretty good what pretty well yeah very well yeah questions he asked you like really like strange questions like I remember I remember like he NFL combine I remember he was very concerned with just the ability to do the job day in day out like the schedule part of it which I understood because they were really looking for somebody to do all of it which it hadn't been here in the past right but there was one guy so yeah no we had uh they were very worried about it up I mean screaming did some brain did some I did some I even would see did a couple of them and we just kind of yeah but that's not the best way to go it's such a better show when someone can take ownership yeah hold it down and pride over the pre and the post game shows and when I did it with Craig we did four years I missed like one day for the birth of my child but essentially in four years neither of us missed a show and you've been kind of the same way which is so impressive which brings me to my question because you work so hard obviously I would thank you very tired at the end of all these days so I wake up this morning and the first tweet I see and right now it tells me on twitter how long ago it was so this was five hours ago so it's eight a.m. now which means that three a.m. you're up tweeting the pitching provables that have been announced for the ponterase pirate series why are you up at three a.m. tweeting pitching probably 28 a.m. 2.28 there you go yeah well I did go to sleep and then I like I typically do now I take it so you weren't just coming back from the bars at last call at 2 a.m. staggering last night after the game I did go for a nice walk and dinner and PB last night but I didn't come home that late so I was home by like 10 30 I did go to sleep I wake up in the middle of the night a lot I was on my phone I received the information with the provables and I tweeted the map no surprise really in the probable I mean you didn't think I could wait I could go back to sleep and just do this in the morning you wanted to make sure news on Ben and Woods if I wanted that it got out to in yeah 2.28 a.m. I want to make sure that if there are pod race fans who just happen to be up right now they're going to get the Dylan cease versus Bailey falter matchup for Tuesday it's not even today it's not until tomorrow Tuesday you want you want to be first of the point they're gonna be tweeted out base yeah I can't get beat on the probable yes I saw it first for you so and I will say because I was I had to go look at um at who was pitching for the pirates because I couldn't remember that off the top of my head so I did have to and they came to the work yeah they had that Marco Gonzalez listed for Tuesday initially but you found out that it's going to be fault or that's at least what yeah they've listed then Marco Gonzalez and then Luis Ortiz and a TBD for the pod race they still can't give us an entire series that would be that would be too bold yeah three starters I was kind of racking my brain about that on the way over yeah because both paris and Vasquez would be on four or more days rest I guess Paris be Sunday Monday Tuesday yeah that would be four days rest Vasquez would be even more um you know what's your theory so is it Joe related I think it is a little Joe related and it I feel like if they if they think the bullpen now Joe's not gonna pitch on Thursday because he pitched yesterday they're not gonna throw throw no three days away so it's gonna be either Perez or Vasquez but if things are going well my guess is they wouldn't mind skipping Vasquez because Vasquez we don't talk about him like king and all the innings the king is racked up but Randy Vasquez has pitched way more than I think we anticipated he was going to yeah he has some of the same young in his career has not built up you know no 200 inning seasons in his past either so they may want to save some of his innings for you know September and October not that I expect him to be in the playoff rotation I think that's why we've been talking about king the most yeah exactly so good and so dominant but Randy Vasquez could be a swing man for them you know or a long inning reliever and they might want to save some of those innings and I don't I don't know that Martin Perez now if he pitches like he did on Saturday who knows he may go every fifth day the rest of the season as long as he throws like that but yeah they probably don't mind throwing Perez who had some time off was injured came back has not used as many innings he could be a workhorse especially if he throws well and get him as often as possible every five days if he's pitching well and if they eat him up at the end of the season no big deal he may not even make the the postseason roster but he could definitely be leaned on heavily for innings as a veteran yeah who's done it before he's been doing all-star games pitched deep into seasons before he might be the guy you want to go a little more off yeah so they're probably thinking about that yeah I agree with that and Perez was great I thought and he pitched a little bit differently in that start you could already see sort of the the Ruben Niebla effect if you will he got a lot of swinging miss in that game more than he's got throughout the season so that was encouraging and and I think that's a pretty good theory on the innings part of it and then if the bullpen's you know if season king throw well and the bullpen's really fresh they can then plot maybe in the Miami series to bring Joe back knowing hey we may only get three or four innings but we've got a pretty fresh pen we'd feel comfortable having him pitch on the big league level rather than right going for another minor league yeah it could be like a sort of TBD thing I'm with you because Joe through what was it like 43 45 straight right so that puts him for his next outing wherever that is if it's in the major leagues and minor leagues I don't know probably somewhere in the 60-ish pitches range which is not nothing but you can't and Joe's talked about this you can't put them in a bad position with their bullpen like that that's something especially this time of year you don't want to do so who knows I mean where Joe makes that next start that next outing if it's a rehab start or if it's in the major league you're right it may be sort of day-by-day to see where the bullpen is where they are how they want to bring them back but you would assume the earliest he would come back would be Friday because that would be kind of a normal four days rest you know we've got cease going like you expect seven but get down on it get down on it you know that's why plans can change but I think in their mind they would be looking at okay we've got the off day you got a cease day all right we might be able to make something happen right I think um with the moves that they made of the trade deadline though and and you know we saw the the trickle-down effect yesterday Potters were up 10 to 2 and they still threw Yuki Matsui in the ninth inning Yuki Matsui don't tell anybody and great really great yeah for like now what about a month and a half Sammy I mean really good yeah if you look at his numbers in a vacuum there he's a good relief relief pitcher he had some struggles he had some strike zone problems he's he's fixed those he's like 22 strikeouts one walk in his last how many appearances he's a very effective reliever but right now he's your number six seven option out of the pen he's coming in and eight run games in the ninth inning and he's he's good he's a he's a guy that other teams would be like loving to have and maybe the seventh inning right now and the potteries have a like some riches right now in the bullpen thanks to the moves that they have made which should give them more flexibility over these next couple of months at the end of the season with what they want to do whatever with the starting rotation yeah and Yuki even if you go back I think a little bit farther than that he had a really good stretch remember that Sunday game in Kansas City where they put him out there to close and that was because Stephen Cole it gave up all the runs and they had to go in the fraud again we're going back the way he's here going for the sweep yeah but even before that Yuki had been pretty solid for a handful of weeks and then had that outing in Kansas City and and really since then I know there's been a couple of tougher ones in there but you're right he's been really really good and look the bullpen has the potential to be number one the best in baseball and number two just an enormously huge strength for this team and and you saw it yesterday I mean a 10-2 game think about who pitched it was Morahone, Estrada and Matsui and by the time Morahone came in in the sixth inning well it was a 3-1 game then then the home run by Peralta made it sixth to one but the point is they had the luxury to go to somebody like a Jeremiah Estrada in a game that was not particularly close imagine saying that a week week and a half ago I mean basically they had three high leverage guys you could really trust in a big spot and now that has totally changed it is a really really big deal and Morahone's given a little bit of ground lately but they can be careful with them and they can pitch him in slightly lower leverage situations and they still got good stuff you know he could get locked in again and be very valuable down the stretch even though he's I wouldn't say struggled but he keeps giving up just there's a home run here and a home run there not necessarily always costly it wasn't yesterday but you keep an eye on that sort of thing but you have other options now and those are young guys I mean look Adrian Morahone has been I think a pleasant surprise this season I mean think about how you viewed him going back to spring training on who he's been very talented arm great stuff I think we all understood that but somebody that struggled to stay healthy and and was up and down in his major career trying this again right right and into his credit Adrian has been just great this year and obviously as strata has been a wonderful find as well but the other thing it does we talked about the innings a day like yesterday Matt Waldron now there was a match up there lefty on lefty in the sixth inning but he ultimately threw 80 pitches in five and two third zinnings gives them the ability with king with Waldron with a Vasquez you know to as best they can shave off some innings shave off some pitches so that deep bullpen it really could have an effect in a lot of different ways and I guess that's why you make the moves right to make it that kind of pen and give you that kind of advantage let's take a timeout we'll fix Sammy's camera on our youtube stream and I want you to think about this question when we come back this is now your third season of padre's pre and post game is this the best you've seen them play over an extended stretch hmm or you know are you going to go back to the close 22 playoffs is there a better stretch of politics about it all things about it than what you've seen basically since the all-star break talk about that with Sam Levitt he's in studio we'll check traffic with Kelly and then back in a minute here on 97 three the fan I left Sam Levitt with the question over the last two and a half seasons of him doing padre's pre and post game shows and let's give it to the regular season here have you seen a better stretch of padre's baseball they've won 11 of their last 13 games 11 and 3 total since the all-star break they've won all five series since the all-star break I did the math for you I went back and looked quickly there's only been one stretch in which the padre's have done better than 11 and 3 in 14 games in the last two and a half seasons and none of us really care that much about it because it's when they won 14 of 16 last year last season and when it was kind of too late at the end of the year and I don't know that you can give them a ton of credit no for that but other than that there was um there was a good start to 2022 22 22 was a very good start 14 and 7 in their first 21 was a really good stretch they played good baseball to start that season after that they kind of slowly built their way kind of into playoff position last year of course there was really until the end there was no great stretches beginning of this season that just just wasn't you know they did their five game thing and then fell apart and then five game thing again I don't know Sammy is this the best stretch of Padres regular season baseball in the last three seasons yeah I think so yeah and I went back and looked at the start of 2022 because I'm with you I mean the end of 2023 they did play great in September last month but it was a totally different situation obviously the start of 22 was really really good it's easy to forget because from about mid-June to the end of the regular season they played 500 ball correct and for a while it was below that and then they kind of got hot towards the end again but the the start of 22 was really really good like I was looking at it here there was a stretch in in late April they won a lot of games but you look at some of the series like they swept the Reds twice once at home once on the road they had to play the Dodgers for three games I think this stretch not only because they're 11 and 3 since the break but also because of the quality of the opponents I mean you have three series eight games out of the 14 they've played so far in the second half have come against first place teams and like not flooky first place teams all very legitimate talented good first place teams in the Orioles guardians and obviously the Dodgers so the quality of the opponent and they've I guess they've gone 6 and 2 against those teams like quality of opponent and I said it during the road trip at some point towards the end of it like you just feel it too you feel like this is what clicking looks like like we we talked a lot last year and a lot early this season about this team clicking altogether at once whatever definition you want to have for the word clicking and it does feel like for the first time in a long time the start of this second half they are clicking as well as they have in a while what I like is the variety of the wins yes in the first 14 games of the second half of the season and feel free to save that Polly they've won some games in which the offenses carried them the 12 3 win in Washington 10 to 2 yesterday scored 9 in Baltimore in that middle game they've also had some games where starting pitching has been the key they've had the bullpen be the key sometimes it's been the stars sometimes it's been the the role players at the back guys coming off the bench they really have one in a variety of ways over these last 14 games to start the second half of the season and that that to me is the sign of a good team a good team you know okay teams can win if they've got a good really good pitching staff and you know pitching staff goes on a good run you're gonna win some games but as soon as the pitching staff give some ground well you give it back up and they haven't had great starts every single time the starting pitching has been very good but they had a game where Waldron gave up five in the first inning and they found a way to win that game they've had other starts that that haven't been perfect for the most part it has been very good you're not gonna win 11 out of 14 when you're starting pitching is not good but I feel like it's been a variety of ways and I don't discount the six games against the the nationals and the Rockies which are the kind of games that this team has traditionally stopped their toe against other than the Friday against the Rockies that's five and one beating the teams that you should be has always been a stumbling block for the Padres yeah and they've done that as well I think it's a good point on the variety of wins just on this homestand alone you have the Tuesday game against LA where they they fall behind five nothing come back to win it the game after against the Dodgers was kind of a uneasy one they're cruised often showed up in a big way lose on Friday and then look let's be honest about it Saturday's game the offense did not do a whole lot at all they got great starting pitching from Paris that was a one-one game heading into the bottom of the seventh inning they finally got the uh saw young candidate Tanner Gordon out of the game on uh on Saturday and by the way I asked Xander about it after the game I said kind of what happened in that seventh inning offensively first thing he said was you know we got the starting pitcher out of the game so uh once they got into the Rockies bullpen uh they they finally had some hits but three to two I mean it's not like the offense exploded and then yesterday they you know they got it rolling late offensively you mentioned your interview with Xander yeah is that where he talked about room and abla and how his message to Martin Perez yeah so uh the the second question I asked Xander on Saturday yeah um was about yeah it's on uh it's on the 97th it's actually the the clipped answers on my Twitter if you want to pull it up um but I didn't hear this Sean yeah it's a good answer we should play it uh Xander I asked him about Martin Perez and by the way not only had Xander faced Perez a lot in the American League but he was also his teammate in Boston um I'd have to look at what the years were but in the last in the last few years and I asked him you know what what he thought about uh how how Perez pitched playing behind him and the first thing he did was really start talking about Ruben you're starting picture Martin Perez quite a Padres debut six strong innings you've seen Perez a lot over the years as an opponent from your perspective what did Perez do so well today I had him as a teammate you know probably here's the red Sox and I mean he was dotted I mean I'm in second I'm right behind it on the man you actually thought it so much today you know you have to kill your pitch as well I remember the moment he got here I said hey you see you see Ruby right there Ruben everything he says you just do all right because I mean it's I've seen this guy we're so hard with pictures you know and and and I know how much you care for those guys and that's one of the first I remember telling him that's uh that's something though I mean you expect the pictures to say it from a position player a star position player yeah I mean something I've known position players probably don't know who the pitching coach on the team is sometimes I would expect Joe Musgrove to pull him aside and be like hey that's the guy right there right listen to him but yeah that speaks volume that's pretty cool and by the way the Padres have also quietly put aside some of the narratives of the first half of the season remember left-handed starting pitchers I do they couldn't I kept a running list of starts numbers I don't know if you have the numbers lately but it's I don't have the overall I think they've won like 10 out of 11 and 10 and starters I don't know what changed I think part of it was Donovan Solano and getting Xander Bogart's back Manny Machado getting hot the things that we kind of said when they were struggling against lefties well they need to get some of the right-handed hitters going and they have done that and and Solano's been big Peralta has been big maybe not as consistent as Solano but he's had now two games that I could say are the the David Peralta games right yesterday was one of them and he had the the other one with the big home run as well that that he's made some contributions you know obviously against righties on the other side of the plate but getting those contributions from unexpected sources has been huge for the Padres this year yeah I think first on on Solano he's been great I mean you can't say enough about what he's been and every time he's in there he impacts the game right whether that was pin-shitting late against the Dodgers to win it whether that was the other day hitting a home run like he always impacts the game every time he's in there Peralta has had his moments look the Padres could really use David Peralta you know to have some more moments because we don't know when Fernando is going to be back and and right now that's a big question mark in in right field and you know anything about him all I can tell you is that Fernando was out there throwing earlier this week but once they started doing drills in the outfield like they did some outfield stuff at some point during the homestand some point this weekend he went to the bucket and was you know just kind of helping out so he was okay to throw and stand out there but anything that was you know running wise as they did drills that was that'll be the big sign that he's close once he's once he's running without worry and pain shouldn't be that long after that he comes back that means that I would think I would fully heal at that point I would think once he's running once he's taking normal BP I would agree with that is he gonna need a rehab assignment I don't know this is a lot of time to miss but we're late enough in the year where you know maybe they just do live BP's and they they get it back out there I mean Zander didn't go on a rehab assignment and he's out for another month he dinner leaks he's an ends well that center center was down there for like through I'm sorry you're right Zander did go on a rehab but I will say tatissa's a track record of like miraculous returning to the lineups like remember when he had COVID and and he came back and I can't remember if he had two home runs around the first game and everyone goes yeah you must have found a way to really stay sharp and he goes no I did literally nothing for 10 days I sat I sat in my room alone for 10 days place the bet for whatever game he comes back he will hit a home run he does it all the time you do nothing yeah no I just sat and watch watch TV like it's a bummer we have video games it's a bummer we have such an extensive history of him coming back from an injury or whatever but every time he comes back from missing some time he comes back with a monster home run he does he does and so maybe they just feel comfortable when he's ready he's he's ready to go back into the lineup yeah you would you would assume that it wouldn't take that long for him to get going like Zander missed a lot of time and he took some live BP and he did some stuff and then he was on the rehab and I think with Zander with the shoulder injury there's a process of building up confidence they're not getting even let Fernando start running until he feels confident enough that you know right or whatever you mention my guess is once he does it and there's no pain he's not going to really think about it again because if you're there it's not and once it's healed and it's healed and there's no pain and he can push off you know he takes a swing and runs toward first he sprints in the outfield once you've done it once or twice it's good now with Zander those swings the dives the things that you know could re aggravate the shoulder he even talked about it like you know I didn't fully trust myself it's taken a while to come back and now you've seen some of the power come back yeah lately with Tetis I don't think it's necessarily going to be as mental of a thing for him I'll tell you what is a viewer still every time Zander has the lunge to make sure like a diving tag at second base which has happened a few times I always think in my head once he does that I'm like I hope the shoulder's all right because just know where it is on his body and you imagine that and he talked about still you know kind of dealing with it as he started to come back but he's uh he's been okay by the way I mean hopefully it's not getting overlooked Zander's been great it's been really good it's been really really good like this is this is the the Red Sox guy he's over 400 you know and there hasn't been a ton of thump there's been more lately but he's been really good he's he's very important for this club and it's no coincidence that as he's played well it's come with them winning too exactly all right let's take a quick time out we got Sam Levitt they're talking about the pod race we'll picture of aj preller you'll shake into the early times never shy to trade top prospects aj preller makes pod race a threat again yeah the conversation that continues to be centered a segment on the pod race bull pen about an hour ago around the pod race and for good reason they've been moving up in the world we got sam levin in studio we're going to talk about uh the playoff races and the weekend that was in major league baseball right after a check of traffic here on 97 3 the fan and baseball coverage on 97 3 the fan is presented by t mobile switch uh first of all in the nationally west race it wasn't saying expecting the pod race bill to make up much ground considering the dodgers were facing the a's they did stumble in the first game of that series on friday but then came back with win saturday and snuck out a 3-2 win yesterday that was um it was all the offense i think uh four of the runs were the first inning the dodgers scored two in a kieke hernandez double and then runt rooker hit a home run on the bottom of the inning and then the only run the rest of the game i think was a third inning rbi single by uh uh by bijio cabin bijio and that was it and i think the a's loaded the bases and had some chances the dodgers bullpen which has been very shaky managed to cobble it together for about half the game uh and they snuck out that 3-2 win to get what would have been a costly series loss if they not had they not even taken two out of three from the a's but like the pod race lose the first come back take the last two and the pod race remained four and a half games back in the in all west yeah and i think not the disappointing that's not the right word but i guess the unfortunate part of even the last couple of weeks after the all-star break for the pod race is that they haven't been able to pull away to no faults of their own right there's not this big gap between them and the rest of the wild card seems this is a true six teams and maybe even more than that race i mean look the giants have played a lot better they're on the outside looking in kind of out of that group of six but um this is a real race like that's the thing for the pod race they they cannot afford i'm not saying they can't lose a game like on friday you know i i had some of the calls and some of the social media posts like people were some people we're freaking out on friday after losing to the Rockies and two things can be true at once Rockies should be a team you can beat and also it's one game at a 162 and good teams lose uh it's a bad teams all the time we saw the a's beat the Dodgers on friday uh like you alluded to so um look they're not gonna win every game the rest of the way they do need to keep playing really really well because the the margin for for error unfortunately in this wild card race in particular is just not very big all right if you do want to catch the Dodgers though and it's definitely within the realm of possibility i would suspect that this would be a week you're going to want to make up a game or two and get a little bit closer because the opportunity is there now the pod race series in Pittsburgh is not an easy one but you are missing Paul Skeens who pitched yesterday and will not face the pod race in the next three days while the Dodgers meanwhile are taken on the Phillies uh for the next three days starting tonight now Phillies haven't been playing great either they did win yesterday thanks snapping a six-game losing streak but i'd imagine that they're both teams are going to be pretty up for that series and then as the pod race go to Miami and again you're going to be nervous because the pod race need to take care of business against a team like the Marlins the Dodgers then get the Pirates but they will have to face Paul Skeens likely in that series whereas the Padres will skip him so you know you can at least see a scenario where the Dodgers you know they're not a three and three week isn't terrible for the Dodgers the Padres had a good week four and two on the road or you know even could go like five and one whether it's you know take two out of three yeah from the from the Pirates and then sweep the the Marlins if that's possible you could make up a maybe a couple of games there and and really tighten up this nationally west race and i'll take it a step further because it's beyond even just the Dodgers who have a rougher week than the Padres do the Diamondbacks play the Guardians this week the Brewers play the Braves so that's a tough series for Atlanta and then the Mets have to play in so they played in Anaheim yesterday they have to fly to St. Louis today to make up a game then they play tomorrow in Colorado it's a wacky road trip they have to make up the game so they flew to St. Louis last night make up the game fairly early today a little bit earlier than the normal and then go to Colorado after that so they have a rough travel week and look i mean things get wacky in Denver right with the altitude like that's a tough week for the Mets so you saw the Rockies aren't i mean they're not playing terrible now i mean they took one for the Padres and could have had that second game as well so maybe now they can right give the Mets a little trouble this week so hypothetically yes it could be a good beneficial gaining ground separation type of week for the Padres of course with that you know it seems so often the obvious stretches where those things should be true where there should be good things that happen so often doesn't work out that way and then when you have a a nine game road trip to open up the second half facing two first place teams goes extraordinarily well so who knows you mentioned the Braves they're going to be facing the Brewers and they've been teetering a little bit they they only took two of four from the Marlins this weekend including losing both Saturday and Sunday they got shut out seven nothing yesterday the Padres have made up some ground we have the stat earlier but since the all-star break Padres 11 and 3 now they haven't gained any ground on the dime a half a game since the break the diamondbacks are 11 and 4 but the Braves have gone 7 and 9 since the break so you've made up five games in the standings on the Atlanta Braves since the start of the all-star break and now in a virtual tie for the top wildcard spot technically the Braves are a percentage point ahead because they've played two games fewer and they have one less loss but that will even out at the end of the year they'll both play 162 and the Padres again have that tiebreaker locked up if it comes down to it so essentially give the Padres I think the edge right now in that wildcard race against the Atlanta Braves the Diamondbacks are the team to me that they're the worrisome team at the moment they've actually been the best team in baseball if you go back before the all-star break they've had the best record at they you know arbitrary endpoints like 13 and 8 since July something early in July uh they've been playing really good baseball lately they continued that over the weekend taking two of three from the pirates including facing schemes yesterday and while they were losing early for nothing they got a couple of schemes and then they you know did that Padres thing where they plucky and rallied back against the bullpen getting a three run home run by jock peterson uh go ahead I think in the seventh inning and then went on to a 6-5 over the pirate so that was a big one for the Diamondbacks both game and series to keep the momentum that they have built really strongly since since early in July yeah Diamondbacks to me are pretty scary for a few reasons number one they've been there done that right they've been able to make the postseason get hot enough to make it they know what it's like to be there they've got veterans on that team they've got young players on that team they've got some good starting pitching on that team and i'm a big fan tutorial level i am think he does a really good job i think he's a really good manager so i'm i'm with you they scare me a lot it land is really interesting because i feel like with them it's a lot of pedigree in who they've been and there's a lot of reality about this season that would tell you with the way they're playing the injuries they have maybe there's a kind of legitimate chance that when this is all said and done in a month and a half two months they could be on the outside looking in of this whole thing and they haven't played well and i didn't love what they did at the deadline the Braves are interesting because i think we've all sort of like penciled them in to one of those spots and i'm not totally sure they're gonna get there i really not i called that in the round table like three weeks ago i said i don't know if the Braves they're too many injuries at some point yeah as good as you are at overcoming injuries and they want a world series overcoming huge injuries you can't do it forever and strider and kunya again and albies it's just too much for any team necessarily to overcome and i'm not surprised by the fade that we've seen now the diamondbacks are scary but they can't take away your playoff spot right now because they have one of the playoff spots they could pass you but they can't take it away the Mets are the first team behind you that actually is trying to break their way in and they were kind of a scary team a little bit before the all-star break they've cooled off a little bit they're nine and seven since the break but just drop five and five i think in their last ten drop two or three to the angels so i'm not counting out the Mets by any stretch of the imagination but they're not as hot as they used to be but their team definitely keep your eye on them because as long as you hold off the teams that are now behind you which include the Mets the Cardinals who just dropped three of four at the Chicago Cubs so they're in kind of a spot where they kind of need to pick things up the Giants are not out of it either they you know with Blake Snell on a second half Blake Snell heater even though they're a game under 500 they're still on the fringe of contention what are they about four and a half i think out of a playoff spot five somewhere around there and then you've got the Pirates who the Padres will this week have a chance the Pirates have to face the Padres and the Dodgers there's a chance the Pirates are pretty much irrelevant after this week they know that though so they're going to be coming basically like their season is on the line over the next three days against the Padres and then three days after that against the Dodgers and you really start looking at this like if the Giants were to make a run they're four and a half out so they're kind of outside of that quote on quote group is six right now but striking distance i mean there's a world where it could be San Diego Arizona and San Francisco if the Giants got hot i'm i may be more worried about the Giants than the Braves it's crazy because we're the standings are right now when i see Blake Snell start to look the way he's looked and they've got web and they've got good players in Robbie Ray pitch yeah Robbie Ray welcome back as well i didn't see what he did in his last hour but his first hour was good for sure took a no hitter like through something i there is a world where the Giants are right in this thing and there may be three NOS teams like right there it's crazy that they sold off a little bit at the deadline yeah they didn't they weren't aggressive i mean they didn't do a full sell-down but but you know i i wonder if they give up a starting pitcher and you're like your outfielder when you're thinking you have a chance at making a run and they're trying to have their cake and eat it too they want to pick they wanted to play the market and pick up you know in a seller's market what they could but also they still want to compete and right now they're towing that line okay they're not out of it they still have a chance and they have more momentum than some of the other teams in the nationally wild card race right now and you know those are teams the potteries and the diamondbacks that are the diamondbacks and the giants of the potteries don't don't have a season series lead against i believe i i think they're a game or two under 500 against both of them yeah right now so you know those last series remaining against those two teams could be very yeah they're very critical like we've said last series against the Dodgers late in september and like we've said like there is and it doesn't mean you can't lose one two three in a row at some point personally i think you can't go on any type of extended skid no more five games you can't have it all right that's uh what's going on in the playoff race paul he's got some headlines in the rounder report also want to look at the the bottom of baseball and what's going on there as well one more hour samion studio next year on the fam then in woods we've got one hour and one show left and then uh woods he should be back barring any travel nightmares like joe musgrove had this week yeah but what happens to this flight from kawaii is canceled and he's stuck there like i don't know what his schedule looks like because i know he comes back tomorrow i don't know exactly what time but we have a tier one baseball game tomorrow night at six thirty that i know he will not be here in time for so he's not yeah he's not he's not landing until tomorrow evening and then he's gonna turn around he's gonna have the jet lag does it work the other way coming this way uh it's better coming this way i think from west to east is less jet like the worst jet lag is east to west samion you remember when you came out you didn't you drove out though i did drive out but um three hours isn't much though i'll be fine so you did um he's i bet he was ready to come back this morning but he was he's stuck on an island he can't what do you what do you think he's going to say about his vacation because he's on kawaii right i've never been to Hawaii he's on kawaii which is beautiful that's like one of the garden island yes one of the remote islands furthest out toward the west now he did have the full family with him correct to small children he's ready to come back to work okay you've heard that okay we've heard rumors okay the room that jeff parson's reporting but i think he is is ready he loves his vacation but he's ready to come back to work and with the small children that always there's an aspect of at times it's a trick not a vacation right and there's times where he also has his uh his in-laws are there so it's not it's not 100 that they have to watch them every second which helps it be a vacation i think right but just you may even call on today he said he was thinking about it just quickly before the round of report so we heard about joe's travel difficulties in his southwest flight that was supposed to go to san Antonio they got canceled right now i don't why would it have got canceled i did not dive into i didn't either i mean i don't i you know well he he took a late flight because he was at he wanted yes which i i get which is is totally fine i don't why would it have made medical issues staffing issues there's many reasons as he dealt to airlines why flights may be canceled crowd strike issues i don't know but apparently he got word that oh that's the last flight to san Antonio and it's not going to san Antonio anymore so they had a pivot send him to fresno instead and i assumed they found a puddle jumper to fresno i doubt he drove there but i i don't actually know now you did the minor league circuit hey do we got a six-hour drive to present imagine he drove i mean you might have i mean i think i think you flew it's possible but it's not like it's that much easier to get to fresno from san Diego i could you could see joe musker of saying you know what i'll just get in the car drove joe perhaps somebody drove i i'm not sure whether he flew or drove helicopter by the way just baseball wise we talked about like when he might come back i you know they said earlier this week that one of the reasons he was going to go to san Antonio was to face a higher level of hitters i i do wonder if they'd want him to do that still before he gets on a major league mounted impossible possible now they got four hits off of him but he was just lighting up the stripes on so they knew that and that's fine now you did the minor league circuit i mean you got a size double a yes double a travel is is it still mostly buses it is all buses it's all buses there was no flying at all i mean there had to be some longer trips though oh yeah texas lead when we would go in fact huge the funniest part and it seems that are not even in texas in the texas oh yeah you've got Wichita, Kansas now you've got Tulsa, Oklahoma, springdale arkansas you had to go from san Antonio to Wichita little rock arkansas look on a map where little rock arkansas is compared to like midland texas i mean these are not like same parts of the country and they would be in the same league san Antonio to little rock arkansas springfield is a nine hour drive nine hours i guess i assume that there was one or two that you just had to fly to no no like to go from corpus christy to springfield i think was the the longest trip i ever took and that was like eleven twelve hours ish and remember too there's limits on the bus drivers so like they can't drive fifteen hours with breaks so you have to stop at some point there's a transition period where they switch out the driver remember you also get out and people got to go to the bathroom you eat oh yeah there there were trips that took you twelve thirteen fourteen hours and sometimes those were overnight and that i also these aren't sleeper buses these are just no they're pretty nice coach buses but not sleeper buses in fact though are our first my first season in amorillo 2019 we did have a sleeper bus we had one regular coach bus and one sleeper bus on some trips i never went in the sleeper bus the sleeper bus the players liked it because they could lay down and stretch out which i totally got it was weird though because you were laying the whole time and it was like bunks like three here three across three the players really liked it i never but if you want to like work in laptop or something like that no sleeper buses and also and also we always had two buses so you always got like your own row for the most part so you had plenty of room did you get experience with both like didn't the minor leagues they had more of a major league type of schedule or a couple series of a week and i switched to correct you play one team like six games in a row right in a week and then you're off on monday right so the next right so they switched that i think post-pane i can't remember if it was 19 or 21 when they did all the restructuring but it used to be where like you would play you did way more traveling because you would play you're right three four games then go to the next city right and go back to places multiple times and then they made it where it was the tuesday to sunday off the monday and it's like that the whole way you play a six-game series so the point of that was to to reduce the travel and and yes but i will say like from the baseball perspective i know a lot of guys don't love it because like for a starting pitcher your pitcher on tuesday then we'll face the same team his next star in the last game yeah and you see those same relievers a lot from a baseball perspective i know there's a group of people that don't love it but from a travel perspective and a logistic perspective it's there are major benefits and rek in the youtube chances benewoods tier one bus for events sounds pretty cool woods would be that dad that's like don't make me turn this bus around l-o-l would woods be driving the bus uh... you probably drive the ball to be honest he drove us back from spring training as we both fell asleep in fact so i i know we got to do the round the repair but um i actually our bus driver my first year in amrilo 2019 he was at a pod race game a few weeks ago i went into the upper deck i went to find him yes he was with his case he's still keeping touch with the bus drivers from 2019 i went to the upper deck i sat with him for a few winnings in the upper deck and it was great it was awesome so sammy and the bus driver yeah shout out to man let's get to the rindle report and get things started here with our addition today's edition of the rindle report now tuned into the mouth greatest welcome to the rindle report with paul rindle hi paul right two stories from the world of sports that we haven't gotten to yet we'll start off in major league baseball and one story that you didn't know you needed are you laughing beyond it's the rindle report hey paul how you doing okay how are you on 97-3 the fan are you ready to blast the mood i need some help please that was good can i get a whole year oh yeah all right all right all right good thanks gentlemen every does that well he does we will replace it all right uh let's pay off the t's band yeah you know we've been talking about winning teams like the padre's most of the morning but the opposite of that would be the chicago white socks they have they are on the verge of making history here we said it we had jordan on uh friday jordan shusterman and we were trying to remember what the all-time record was i think it was the 1961 fillies had lost 23 games in a row and the white socks just lost their 20th they are one shy of the american league record uh which was crazy because that record i remember that that was the aureals 88 to start the season started oh and 20 imagine yeah 21 you want a fan base to start panicking i mean oh and 21 it's not as well i mean wow that's a quick start well late till next season because you're not coming back from oh and 20 longest losing streak in 36 years their last win i believe was july 8th i think there's been what about seven teams all the time that have ever lost at least 20 in a row and then 21 and 23 are in a league of their own so now the white socks play the eight starting tonight so if they are gonna somebody somebody has to wait if they're gonna decide the dodger's trouble this weekend yeah hey i'm not giving mark katze has kept that team from what could have been a disaster from giving up they've done i mean their record's not good but it's certainly not any more embarrassing than most usual bad team let's record this if you're one of the 14 remaining white signs once you hit i mean i don't know what the number is but they're at 20 right now oh i'm cheering for it you kind of you are oh yeah is there a white socks and i was like you know what they deserve it just keep losing yeah no i think for sure i think you kind of have to yeah no i i i would bet if you would pull white socks fans i i would not be shocked if there was a majority of white socks fans that said we want think to set the record once you're gonna lose you might as well do it we want stock bottom yes the record is like within site you're just like you know what you don't want to just be the terrible team that lost 22 in a row you might as well just i mean but we're still talking about the Orioles and the Phillies you know who i feel bad i don't know that i want to be that team that's talked about forever is the longest losing history i feel bad for Stephen Wilson yes how come they didn't trade him at the deadline is he heard or something i mean i like he got a nice pretty good guy and i think he's had a pretty good year based on what i saw a couple days ago but uh is what it is it is they're casting the movie for the uh money ball was the 20 wins in a row do we get a 20 loss in a row white socks the worst movie of all time all right move on uh get stuck in the middle i mean who's the little girl who gets to sing the song about the losing streak just not as long you can write the script who'd you get to star in that one who we got uh brad pit is jerry ryan star no i don't think so all right uh we talked about Blake Snell earlier he uh threw the no hitter on friday night his first career no hitter his first career complete game first time ever pitching in the ninth inning uh there were a couple of moments though after the game that we hadn't gotten to wanted to bring some light to that first of all uh i don't know if he had to go through concussion protocol or if the Giants just haven't had a lot of practice with the gatorade dumps this year yeah this was bad they like came up from behind him he had just put the headset on to talk to the broadcasters and they just level him with the um with the cooler so it wasn't the gatorade cooler which the top just comes off and now you just dump it on top of them this was one of those like like you take to the beach yes it's like an igloo yeah it's just like an igloo cooler it's like an igloo cooler it's one of the attached lids that swings open and closed and they totally just biffed it and nailed him and they're getting doused with cold cold ice cold water but then they just bash him right in the back of the head feeling oh it's like hey it's cold i gotta collect my breath please do get a replay of that that's how you not you don't do it they hit me in the head with the dang lid i mean that's the biggest fail of a gatorade ice dump that i've ever seen no kidding you really could have had a concussion from that thing yeah those are heavy lids very that did not be he laughed it off i guarantee you that did not feel good at all one of my favorite parts about the gatorade dump is that there are clearly players that really don't enjoy it or like it or want it there most don't care i think but there's a there's a group of guys who are totally not about it i loved the i don't know that blakes now love that i loved the clip last week of manny and was a tyler wade carrying the bucket over and you hear manny he's on camera go look out bob watch out bob then they just get him and then after the game blake snell was in front of his locker and uh was asked about you know not historically pitching much past the seventh inning at all in his career and he had a uh message for everyone how would you describe how you were feeling it was the first time you pitched into the ninth inning and it didn't know they can't say it anymore you know complete game shut out no header leave me alone it doesn't go to night don't go late y'all get that feels just dead leave me alone leave me alone yeah just because in your first 201 career starts you didn't pitch deep into the game we did we did come up with a bit of a narrative about you blake snell that your worries you weren't that efficient with your pitches and you probably weren't gonna go you know eight or nine innings most time i'm sorry that we just invented that out of thin air because you didn't do it in your first 201 starts how dare i i really that would have been so cool if they would have found a way to bring them here at the deadline now that was that just for the the story line in to get him back in the quotes and then he threw them out in the club house and his first star instead of a week after cease that there is i mean he's opting out right oh yeah now i think he's on track a couple months ago there wasn't looking good a Boris guy he's gonna opt out because to me he could get the same money for next year is he still a Boris guy i think he's done no no no i think he didn't he fired didn't he fired him fired him fired him would you trust Boris again go through this yeah i mean if i'm Blake i want to sign early i guess you got to go with the track record but yeah you got to be he would be i'd be so nervous i'd be like Nick Martinez i am signing like november 7th or whatever the first day is i would i want to know where i'm going i would think he's got to opt out and try to get because you're right he'll get the 30 or whatever he's gonna sign the same deal he signed this year with whomever again two year but you got to try again right to get to get the money to do it right right i don't know if i'm a team i i wouldn't want to wait till then because if i want Blake to know i'd want him early i'd make a aggressive but somewhat team friendly offer on november like eighth say if you want this now you can have it now or you can play the game and wait until spring training and try to see if you can get more than this but you want this now right we're offering it to you right now right and i wonder if what happened this past off-season would influence him in saying okay hey here's i think here's the deal i think it will fit i just don't know what to take it i don't know the Boris would advise him to do that great point i think he would be very interested in something like that all right and then finally got a story here Ford is trying to patent a system that would have a camera on your car that automatically can report speeding to the police well i don't want that i mean i don't speed obviously but if i could do it i wouldn't want my car telling the police that i was speeding yeah that's that's big brother that's not good that's bad that's major big that that sounds like it might steer you away from buying right said never gonna buy a Ford if why who would buy that well there's a second part of the story here it's not going to actually monitor your Ford vehicle it's going to use onboard cameras to snitch on others around you nark cam so if you're cruising down the freeway at a responsible legal 65 miles per hour and some guy comes flying past you at 90 your camera could theoretically pick up that speed and report it to the police for the other guy not for you they got an laugh out loud in the chat from i need money you said the key is snitch the Ford nark no i'm out on that you don't know where the speed traps are they could be any driver next to you could be a speed trap i really got to get to where i'm going oh crap it's a Ford you're looking at all right there's no one on the freeway there's no cops obviously that's not a cop car that's just a Ford fusion driving i'm just driving the only other car in this road is a Ford fusion so if i need to go 85 to get to work i can do that safely but that Ford fusion may now be reporting you to the cops yeah oh i don't know about that i would consider a technology that prevented texting or you certain usage of the phone while driving that i could get on board with and i'm almost shocked that we don't have that yet like your phone just can't tell that you're traveling at a certain time yeah okay you you can't open up messages if your phone is traveling i'm not driving i'm in the back seat yeah that's true i mean you can prevent speeding if you want anyone been in a golf cart in the last 40 years the governor governor and it won't let you go any faster than what's that 20 or whatever it is this governor the governor on a gulp bus limits how fast the car can go like the most you can do is like oh the 20 or governor of the state no the governor it's called the governor it's it's something that throttles back the engine and i think the guys who work at the golf course the cart shot they can turn it off if they want the car to have a little extra juice and then go faster but when they give it to you a player yeah i definitely turn on that governor and it keeps the golf cart from going as fast as you would really like it to go and they could do that with cars that you need to go on the course i mean you know fast what it gets your ball i know how fast you actually get it 10 miles an hour how fast do they actually go i mean it's fresh you know and sometimes they'll make it even slower like when you're around the clubhouse area it'll come down to a crawl and you just like there's no one here i just want to go faster than three miles an hour or three so the beef in the chat said uh what if you need the speed to get away from something that's a good point yeah like the car yeah i'm chasing it but right now Ford is just trying before it's just trying to secure the patent for this they're not installing these cameras i would assume anytime soon and i'm sure there would be quite a legal i'm sure debate uh and that's a big battle yes Nikia snitch that slayed me that good job out there all right good job on the rattle report poly we got uh sammy in studio we can talk some more baseball if you want to talk to sammy give him a call 833-288-097-3 just ask him a question i you've i i mean we've talked for years call me about pickleball i'll answer some of those yeah there you go sammy's uh off-season hobbies what's he got going on his off-day the rest of the day today we'll find out next uh after traffic here on 97-3 the fan sammy leavitt's in studio and uh nice enough to come in on what otherwise would be a rare off-day although they've been less rare lately i've had so many off-days they've uh in fact i just noticed for the first time this season there's actually some teams uh that have played as many games as the San Diego Padres in major league baseball there was a point there where the Padres have played at least four more games than every team and like seven or eight more the Rockies go right there this weekend they like it one 11 1 12 yeah so there there are teams that have now caught up thanks to the Padres uh recent string of off-days now those are going to come to an end after today i believe Padres go on a stretch look at your little man your calendar behind you they're quality it might be like 18 or 19 or something so thank valuable off-day for you sammy here because you get a long stretch of work coming up so they say they play tomorrow they are off next thursday the 15th and that's the only one and then their next off-day is not until tuesday september third so and that's a weird week where they play at home at petco against the tigers on monday labor day off tuesday and then they finish the rest of that three-game series wednesday thursday huh so why are they off my guess would be that the tigers well or the Padres you can only play 20 games in a row according to the collective bargaining agreement so occasionally you have to split up a series because if like it was the 18 or 19 20th games you can't play all three of them in a row so that would that would be my guess one of those two teams yeah is uh is hitting their maximum that would be if they didn't have that day off it would be 19 in a row so maybe it's the tigers i don't i don't know but so you're saying there's only one off day between tomorrow august sixth and september third just one often sammy you've got a long stretch coming yeah i will say this though you have a question give it like one two three four five six in september the difference between when they're home and on the road for me is significant the road games are they're easier they're harder content-wise but they're easier schedule yes you're just coming into the studio the home games i am i am i get ready in the morning because i don't have any time to do any notes when i get there and then it's club house and manager everywhere yes and you're running all over the place and setting up the equipment at home games are are quite literally an all day morning to like 11 p.m. affair road games it's it's easier i can get here a few hours before and really get going so now that you know this is extremely valuable and rare off day how are you going to make it special um i've toyed with the idea of driving up towards uh carl's bad insinitis may be finding a nice coffee shop get some stuff done um we have like 42 of them in insinitis yeah it's crazy yeah maybe that i may stick around here play some pickleball i think pickleball will be in my future today big pickleball guy do you have regular opponents how do you uh you just let go and show up i start up pickleball i started playing shortly i took that back i wasn't playing before spring training i started playing during the season this a few months ago i either go to uh to open play in the morning or the afternoon depending on where i am i actually when i was in insinitis during the all-star break i played for the first time at bobby rigs yep tennis center and that was nice becoming pickleball yes they have like 30 courts and it it was packed so i just go to the open plays now here's the interesting thing when i play you know it's like a wednesday morning wednesday afternoon typically the people i play with are older than me but that that does not mean i beat him because pickleball it's not like how well you know you can move or your athleticism or youth you play singles or doubles double doubles doubles yes pickleball and told is more fun with more doubles yes i i don't think i've ever seen people playing singles right in open play so you may just get a random partner and then two random yeah it's wet yet you line up your paddles and whoever your paddles next to you play with let's bold yeah so it's uh it's fun but i i mean sometimes i play well sometimes you know people that are twice my age or are cooking me interesting i absolutely cooked jeff when i heard uh he heard that sammy was taking questions called right in so let's get to him here before the bottom of the hour hi jeff no i don't think so this is jeff from our youtube jeff oh hi sammy yes i have a question for you yeah go ahead because of your background with these sod poodles okay so you've you've been around minor league baseball you've seen your share of weird and fun jerseys now with nike being the oligarchy of jersey design and distribution if it was up to you and you could have the potter is where a weird fun or creative jersey for a game or a homestead what would the design be that's a great question um the podge rays in particular i feel like actually with craig sitting outside i feel like we actually tackled this topic during the winter at some point when i filled in um well because you've seen like minor leaguers yeah so so is jedi right so so there are two star wars there are really two categories of this there are like theme games or theme weekends where maybe they'll wear uh star wars theme jerseys or whatever something crazy like or it could be something about the community like in corpus christy they were the blue ghosts because the uh the world war two ships sits the lexington uss lexington sits in corpus so they were the blue ghosts for the weekend or the snow cones the raspas was uh the word so they have stuff like that tonight tell you does the chon close right flip flops is there exactly a half yes in minor league baseball has initiatives to do this stuff but then there's just like weird ones like in amorillo this was uh after i was done there already they are uh the amorillo calf fries and a calf fry is um it's a deep fried i don't know if i can say the word the radio it's a deep fry down at always yes yes it's a it's a rock yeah okay so you can say it i don't know uh it's a rocky mountain oyster but i guess another name for them deep fried is the calf fries so they are the amorillo calf fries by the way i was an amorillo for three years i never had a calf right you weren't touching it no but well i you know for for the padre is like like i think we talked about this with Craig city connects already yeah so they would behave the San Diego uh california burritos and they'd have a big burrito on the on the front of the jersey like they do you know but then there's the theme no does anyone remember turn ahead the clock weekend in major league baseball i feel like this was maybe in the this was like mercury nets or 90s and they tried to imagine what uniforms of the future would look like with like futuristic fonts and instead of the player names going across left to right they had them going like up and down because some for some reason in the future we like to read things up to down as opposed to left to right i'm not sure that they totally nailed that they had like cut off tops they'd have no sleeves in the right because you know in the future you're not going to need sleeves anymore i don't know that they really nailed it though because for the most part baseball uniforms and this is i assume because this was like the 80s or early 90s they're thinking okay what is 2024 what are uniforms going to look like deep into the future they look pretty much like they did in 1988 uniforms haven't changed that much no in that amount of time technology they're probably a little lighter and more comfortable for the players but in terms of visuals a lot of teams like the Yankees the Cardinals that haven't changed to one bit right in all those years potteries of course have changed their colors but their uniforms are still uniforms just like they always were mrs rindles watching she says uh what is sammy watching on tv these days mmm i don't watch a lot of tv um i started watching that giants hard knocks the offs isn't hard amazing this really good i haven't watched the first episode of that that was good i don't watch a lot of tv here we're like one of the best hard knocks they've had in the years oh well hold on Megan below deck that's what i watch on bravo i'm all in i want to be a deck hand that's my that's my next you know our friend man janela he's a husband on the new real housewives of orange county i saw him tweet that yeah his wife's on the so maybe he has connections if i don't get you on on below deck forget baseball too yeah sammy's new life do you want to work on the ship you want to be one of the crew member i want to be on the tv show working on the whole the whole show is about working on the ship but no but they want to work guests who come want to work i want the drama and sandy make room for calvary sam we go yes below deck i'm in we need to make that connection all right last segment coming up annie and elston standing by craig out here early today i think he's chomping at the bit for his show at ten o'clock a little more with sam leavitt next year on 97 three the fan he listened to sam leavitt's podcast inside san diego baseball where sam covers everything going on with the padrais just find it at ninety seven three the fan s d dot com the odyssey app or wherever you get your podcast so like right now if i wanted to hear sam leavitt's voice i can go to my odyssey app i could look up the inside san diego baseball podcast i could play whatever i wanted and right now i could hear sam's voice it would sound something like padrais beat the national rockies ten to two tonight beat the nationals yes they did that's uh that's actually live sam leavitt he's been in studio with us uh since eight o'clock this morning appreciated sammy having yin it's been nice and fun great chatting with you very good i will say though i'm so unaccustomed to driving here at like seven thirty on a weekday that i'm not used to uh fifteen here getting so backed up little traffic little traffic very rarely we come in well before there's traffic so i don't really know what it looks like it other than looking at the window not crazy from like seven to nine forty five well do you ever so sometimes when i'm in here when the teams on the road during a long road trip and you sit in this room i don't know if you ever get this feeling and i think to myself and especially like when it's like you know ten thirty at night on a wednesday is anybody listening now the numbers say they are but what i will do is i look behind where you're sitting then and i'll look at the highway or i'll look there during rush hour and i'll say there's got to be some of those cars that have us on right now captive yes it reminds you there are people in their cars driving relying on us for their entertainment we were talking about it last week then when when then started out at the mighty six ninety what how late was live programming oh two am we went i think five am or six am to two am live and local programming all day long so yeah i mean yeah that's a lot of people in southern california a lot of people in san diego and i feel blessed i mean it used to be the only place you really listen was in your car but now with the youtube stream yeah and the the odyssey app and podcasting i think we have more people than ever who actually will listen at home people who will uh you know getting ready for work in the morning or school and people that grew up just on youtube and move away or something yeah and out of towners it's uh it's fantastic it's uh i people have been saying for many years that radio is dying i think radio is better than it has ever been in some ways i think whether it's radio or just audio in general i think listening to audio is as big as it's ever been in whatever form that is if it's podcast right if it's live if it's youtube if it's whatever i mean think everybody and their brother has a podcast right we're not yeah when i say radio yeah i i don't necessarily mean right dialing out ninety seven point three on a transistor or in your car i just mean listening to the audio right this station produces in its many form and i i i would give adam credit too because he was pushing i know you guys and me and i think all of us on to youtube kind of well before we actually did it oh he was on it i mean or he was poly was big and our our youtube birth he you're right and that he wanted to do it but we wanted to make sure we were able to do it right yes which and then we it was kind of our idea to do the christmas and holiday extravaganza on youtube that one year which adam then came in and doc killed the feed now remember that first time we ever did youtube i was sitting out there i was sitting out there uh directing right because i was and i was i was doing it on a laptop out there switching the cameras i just wanted to add this big red button that says end-streamed of and then what is the button that says are you sure so we did that uh to wrap up the year that would have been in 2022 and then in 2023 we started building it early in the year and we wanted to launch it for spring training or spring training trip we're like hey yep let's show you the sights that we're trying to describe on the radio let's kind of bring a camera and show you guys and then we stuck with it and it worked out it's uh it's been a fun evolution to mac daddy in the chances when i hear Ben say the word traffic my brain is conditioned for them to cut away for report i don't know why you think that see all those people stuck in kelly's traffic that's right there potential listeners right now it's it's been in sammy and if you are listening uh tomorrow on the program last day before woods returns but we got another special pot raise guest joining us just found out uh CEO eric group nurse gonna be with me right eight o'clock tomorrow morning it's been a while since we've caught up uh with group nurse so um you know things going well they've been i think they sold out every game of the home of this home stand right it is up to how many sell outs 30 high 30 yes i want to say it's 37 i actually write it down next to the to the attendance every night so it is the two game series of d7 the two game series against the dodgers sammy midweek tuesday wednesday and they were setting attendance records right yes 47 was uh tuesday it was 47 559 that was a new record and then wednesday was 46 997 now it used to be for the the remodel of gallagher square that's almost 50 that they didn't feel like they could get as many people in but now they're they're getting a few more thousand in there i'm you notice it right when you're up in the the law oh gallagher square or just in general i mean they gotta go somewhere i mean these are the i think there's how many seats they say about 40 around 40 000 seats so when you have 47 000 that's 7 000 people without a seat which means they're either out in gallagher square or they're up with you in the law i mean you know just wandering around the concourses which means there's just going to be less less room to walk around some of those places but it's great atmosphere so tuesday and wednesday and the law after were really busy yeah like it it varies up there because i could have a day game like yesterday were naturally it's only like noon and it's a you know a day game so it's you know not super crowded up there which admittedly at times it's kind of nice because it's not as loud but yeah tuesday and wednesday i mean it's it's crazy and as someone who's been a podray fan my whole life and went to games at at the queue and at the murph with 9 000 people and there was plenty of parking it was so easy to get in and out and you go to the concession stand there's four people waiting and nobody in any of the lines and you just go right up and i know there's a temptation to have a little nostalgia for the convenience of going to a game with no one there but i promise you it's so much better yeah it's great it's so much better to actually have people cheering at the games and if that means yes you have to wait in line for 15 minutes sometimes to get your you know your board and bruce sandwich or your grannell barbeque soviet they got tv's all over the place you can hear jesse and don and mud making their calls it's way better to have people cheering your team on then show up with 7 000 people and it's empty and you just come in and you come out there's no excitement there right it's not you're going for the excitement and the the crowd in the atmosphere is such a big part of it it is a tremendous crowd and atmosphere and i i really and i know you guys agree i don't say that because we're sitting in san diego on on the flagship like it is so good every night whether it's dodgers or fillies or diamond that's no yeah it is on endo park is always the top of what what it has become and look i'm very lucky i know nothing different okay in my three seasons here but it's it's unbelievable the amount of people there every night in the environment it is by the way was it yesterday yet brian hoeing on yes and he talked about he almost felt bad yeah well londie povar you don't want to you know nothing against i mean when you say well nothing against londie pov park we know what you we know what you really know he handled it very well he did but we know what we was saying that this is way cooler and to have you know packed crowds is just better for a baseball player and he actually the kind of the inside of it was it also i mean you get more spike of adrenaline when you're going out there and like if you use that it fuels you when you're out there and you just don't get it when there's no seven thousand people i think for a reliever i could see where it would make a significant difference late in a game when you come in in that kind of environment by the way board and brew had the baja beef at the ballpark yesterday for the first time i had only had the turcato ever had the baja beef i split a sandwich with my guy Pedro Gutierrez and uh outstanding outstanding the sauce those two yes sauce and with the same sauce that i that i use the uh turcato wow board and brew at the ballpark it's always a good choice good stuff sold out crowds in the sandwiches but um yeah and then he had the other part of it was when you're on the road and you've got to go against a team that has a giant crowd you can get rattled pretty quickly when things aren't going well so that makes a big difference all right Sammy go enjoy pickleball or whatever your last all day thank you thank you for having me in thanks for coming in buddy has in store Annie and elston are coming up next eric group near will join
