[Music] Good morning and welcome in to the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000. And we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, John the Hood broadcasting live in the house hall like Boris, now time for a shot of no shot. Here's Shay Norley, Shayne. Good morning boys from beautiful Hollis Hall. This is Bryce. This mic's all over the place. My God, bellowing into the mic. How are we feeling boys? Well, good man. Good to be out here. Smells like a winner here. The building smells like a winner. Like they've turned the corner. Well, that's because of the morning shower I had. A little Tom Ford I put on. That's the reason why it smells that good in here. Wow. I thought it was my old Spice deodorant. It's old Spice is still in business. What are you talking? Where have you been? Didn't even know old Spice was the thing anymore. Damn it. Every other commercial, great grandfather. Day advertising constantly. Committee Chicago, Committee of Dion Cole doing the old Spice commercials all the time. All right. I will ask you this. Is this or is this not a punishment, Shayne Norley? Well, Luke Combs sends fans wild with savage, fantasy football punishment of his rivals at his latest concert. So Luke Combs sent his fans into delirium with a savage fantasy football punishment. He had two of his best friends on stage to sing with him in front of the crowd in Cincinnati at Paycore Stadium. That was the punishment. They lost in fantasy, but they were last in fantasy football. So the punishment is you have to come on stage and sing with me, Luke Combs. Hang on a second. That's a punishment. Yeah, that sounds great. That's a punishment. So when panties are thrown at you at the stage, that's a punishment. I mean, here's the punishment. The punishment is if you're last in fantasy football and I'm your friend, Luke Combs, you have to be able to score about all of the porta potties. Oh, God. That's the punishment. The idea that you're going to sing a song on stage in front of a sold out house at Paycore Stadium, that's the punishment. The punishment is you have sing with me. It doesn't matter if you can't carry your tune. If you can't carry your tune in the bucket, you're out there on stage. You're getting phone numbers just because you get the rub from Luke Combs. Seriously, that's the punishment. The punishment is that you got to work the parking lot or something else like that. That would be a punishment to me. First of all, I don't listen to Luke Combs. I'm sure he's a great guy, not my cup of tea, but I'd be terrified, terrified. To do what sing? Yes. Fine. You're standing next to a superstar. You're out there. The audience knows what it is. He's going to hand you the mic and he's not going to say a word. That's fine. I'm out there having a good time. Yeah. You're going to sound like an idiot. I don't care. The audience knows what it is. Who cares? I would. Personal bartender backstage. That's a punishment. Yeah. The cap also the singer recently of the seventh inning stretch at the Bom Boomer's game. Here's Shay Norley. That's true. Actually, there was a day a while ago, but he almost brought this up on the show. I think Abdallah was in for you with cap. Yeah. And there was a fantasy football punishment. I'm going to ask you, shot or no shot if this is a punishment. This guy had to enter, pay his own way, enter a U.S. Open qualifier and play all 18 holes in the qualifier. He ended up shooting like a 30 over something ridiculous, this incredibly difficult course. He wasn't a golfer, but that was his punishment last place fantasy football. Play in a U.S. Open qualifier. Shot or no shot. That's a punishment. That's a no shot. It's a day on the golf course. I'm actually going to play at a buddy's club tomorrow after we get off the air here. And the club is way, way too difficult for me. And I'm a decent player. I'm not Tom Waddle. Waddle's really good. Really good. But, you know, when you're Tom Waddle, you have a chance to work on your game. And I'm not a Tommy's level. I mean, just tell you something. That is not a punishment. It's a dream to go to play where I'm going tomorrow and go, I shot a hundred. I don't care. I'm out on a golf course. Not just buddies. Not just a golf course. Just a pristine, like a historic golf course. Right. Not the one you designed the, what did you call it? The ghetto dilapidated, the dilapidated one that looks like Scotland in the south side. No, that's it. South side wouldn't look like that. That's the difference. I'm talking about if I was to build, if Jay Moore and I got into the business of building a golf course on the west side, someplace or someplace in the city, I don't have to do much work. Right. Look how beautiful these greens are. The weeds coming up. Look at that. You just got water everywhere. Water has us everywhere. But it's beautiful. Oh, what a great course. It's BS. He's so much in Scotland. It's BS. Yeah. Not Alex Korska. No, no. Just the idea. Like, it's so beautiful. Let's build that. You'd look. Your nose at it like, oh, look how terrible this course is. Wait a minute. It's length style. Correct. It's wonderful. It's what the people want, nonsense. So, to put a bow on this, Shea Norley, it would not be a punishment to be side by side with Luke Holmes, because the rub you get from Luke Holmes. You get the phone numbers he can't get to. Yep. I'd enjoy the moment. Right. All right. Yesterday, surfaced on social media, Caleb Williams, is expected to play in the Bears preseason game this weekend against Buffalo. Playtime expected to be around the entire first quarter. Shot or no shot. It is the right call to play Caleb for the first quarter, regardless of offensive line health. I think I was just texting with Waddle to shoot who weighed in. He loves our show. Waddle's a great fan of ours. We have him on every Wednesday. And he said, capital letters. Yes. He plays. He may be playing behind them in week one also. You've gotten soft. And I said, I want him to play. I just have to know, look, any play can happen. A guy can come off the edge against the greatest left tackle in the history of the sport. He gets beaten. He crushes the quarterback. That's part of the deal. Just tell me that we have five guys that we feel like we can run our offense and he can get something out of it. Like, if it's Cleveland, Justin's rookie year, when Negi put in, yeah, our five will block their five. Yeah. Okay. He got sacked nine times. Yes. I don't need that in my life. I'm going to stand by what I said yesterday to you where I said on the show yesterday, he's going to have to, he's going to have to deal with some adversity at some point. It's just how the NFL works. It's never going to be perfect. It's going to be a wide receiver that's down. There's going to be a running back that's going to be down. There's going to be offensive lineman. There's going to be shuttle in and out. So even in his rookie year, I'm not looking for drama. What I'm saying is, is that he's got to get used to it. Doesn't matter who's practicing with, sometimes there's going to be an injury. He should play. He's got to get out there, Cap. Sorry. Whether it's a series, a couple of series, he needs to get the field of the game. Remember, I don't disagree with that. He's never called the game before, in a NFL environment, so he's got to get out there and get used to it. Even if it's six to eight plays, he's got to get out there. Yeah. He's got to get out there for more than that. Again, let me be clear. I would like him to be out there to play against real live competition. But if you tell me that three or four of my five starters aren't in there, and I'm putting guys out there who I don't think are going to even make my football team, I need my O-line coach, CMO, Chris Morgan, Ryan Relax, we'll protect him. We'll be okay. I'm not afraid. I'm not afraid. Go buy a dog. I'm not afraid, Stacey. Because we know how the NFL works. It just works that way, is this the way it is? Yeah. Just ask Drew blood, so. Things happen. This whole thing where this all started with Tony Dunge, being afraid, it could be injury. It could be injury at any time, anytime, whether they're too fully intact or not, Shane Orley. Dan Graziano reported for ESPN that Keenan Allen, who recently changed agents, has approached the Bears about an extension. There has been no progress, says the Bears are taking a wait-and-see approach with the 32-year-old receiver, so shot or no shot, Keenan Allen needs to play a minimum of 14 games if he's going to be a long-term option for the Bears. I don't think there's a number that you put on it. What was the number that Tommy gave us? He thought he'd play 13, I think he said, didn't he? Yes. And I think Olin feels the same way. I don't put a number on it. Well, I need to see him perform. I need to see him be able to be out there consistently. But is there a set number? I don't go, "Well, you only played 13, I can't extend." I got to see how it plays out. How about 9? How about that for an example? No, 9. Think about it at 9. Would you like 9? 13, I think there's a new one. It's a place 13 gets 1,000 yards. We can have a conversation. He said he didn't put a number on us. I just put a number out there for him. Like 9. 9, yeah. No. Let's know. Okay. That's a little. How about 11? What about 11 again? I got to see how it plays out. Okay. No, it does matter. That's a shot. It does matter. Because coming into the door here at House Hall, we said, "Well, Keanu's here, but you know he's not going to play the full comment of games because of injuries or whatever the issue." So, I think that if you're the Bears, you'd like to know that this veteran can be able to be there in key moments and healthy enough. That matters? Right. It does matter. Captain Jay Hood, live from Training Camp on ESPN Chicago, live coverage of Training Camp is presented by Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and is brought to you in part by the Chicago Land and Northwest Indiana Chevy dealers. In the middle of the shot of No Shot right here on the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show, Albert Breer joins us coming up at 8.30. Let's go back to shot of No Shot. You're asking us a White Sox question, Shay? Yeah, I'd reset it. There have been a lot of questions about just what the White Sox are waiting for in regards to firing Pedro Grafel, the losing streak, now historic tying the AL record. They had 21 consecutive losses. John Greenberg over the weekend was wondering why Chris Goetz hasn't made a public declaration about the intention with Pedro Grafel and speculated that they might be willing to let him go out with a win, so shot or no shot, the White Sox should let Pedro Grafel go out with a win. Yeah, that's a no shot. That's just silly. What is this? A youth league? Hey, man, we pay you a million dollars a year. It didn't work out best of luck. Here's what we owe you. There's your check and go get a coaching job. Good luck. And whoever the interim manager is, it's not on him if they don't win. He's just filling the time until the season ends and they could try and fix this horrible team. They don't owe Pedro Grafel anything at this point in time. They owe the fans and they owe the organization a better shot of being able to be a winner, but because they've chosen this route to be able to go down this path, Shay, as losers, 21 straight, Pedro Grafel doesn't need to be able to have a power in the back, a victory, let him go out as a victor, because here's the thing, Pedro Grafel will never manage in the big leagues again because of this. He'll never manage in the big leagues again because whatever the perception is behind closed doors at 35th and VEC, the bottom line is your one loss record is what it is. Your resume is what it is. He was over his head as the manager just to start with only because the organization was not equipped to be able to win. You want to get rid of Tony La Russa now? People thought that that was a bad idea. That guy had that team winning before he got sick. And now look at the team. The core is just not good enough. It was never healthy enough to start with. Let's start there. It was healthy enough with Aloy and Mancada. It was never consistent enough to be able to help the Sox win. But the bottom line is that Grafel doesn't need a pound in the back with all those Ls. He should go out when they're ready to fire him. And by the way, I don't want him to be fired. I want him to stay here as Sox manager for the rest of the year. He needs to wear it like everybody else. What's the point? There's no way he finishes this season. No way. I get your point. What's the point? It's just the point because at some point you just have to make a change. You have to. He's not very good at the job. The team is pathetic. It's designed that way. Do the parallel of the Bears and the White Sox. That's about when Polsra got here. It was designed to fail. Like, OK, we got all these guys that are supposed to be good. They're not helping you win anyway, so we're going to reset this thing. That had to be a hard sell for Pols to tell the owner, George McCasky. Yeah, your team's nice, but it's not good enough. We're going to rebuild this thing. No GM or no front office person ever told that to a McCasky. Right. You think Ted, Ted's ever done that? I know it was. Ted would never do that. When they came in here and interviewed Chris Ballard before Pace got the job. Chris Ballard, who's now the GM and Indy. He told him, in his interview, the first thing I'm doing, I'm letting you know I'm releasing Jay Cutler tomorrow, he's a black cloud on the organization or whatever it was the line he used. Yeah. Out. And George went, "OK, you can leave." They weren't letting him buy that contract. No chance. Right. Well, Pols came in, enough's enough. Let's fix it, but I don't think the White Sox entered this season trying to take it down to the studs. Chris, he's a smart guy, doesn't have any experience in this job, but I think Chris went, "OK, we're going to be horrible." But we got the audio there from Jerry. We're going to play it. Jerry, so we got a good core. We're going to be better. Really? Really? And just remember, there was a disconnect from the beginning. What did Chris Gep said in spring training, "I don't like our team." Right. But Jerry said it was fine. We got a nice core here. Chris openly said, "I don't like our team." Because he knew that this would be awful. I guarantee you, he said to Jerry, "Jerry, you may think we got a good core." No. We don't. Bad. That's it. Let it is. The reports that he wanted to trade, Crochet and Robert, tell you everything you need to know about what he thought of the core. I want closure on a debate that we have had on this show all baseball season regarding the Chicago Cubs. We've fought a lot about whether the Cubs bullpen or offense was the bigger problem this season. It is, should we stop talking baseball on the show? We're getting there. Once this losing streak ends, yeah, that'll be all. But since June 1st, I just want to bring this up. I saw this stat. Since June 1st, Cubs bullpen ranked second baseball in ERA, second home runs per 9, second batting average against, third and fifth, first in soft contact rate, second in average eggs of velocity, and first in barrel rate. Shot or no shot, the offense was always the problem for the Cubs. No shot. Well, then you'd be wrong because I've been saying that since June, that the team needed offense and look how the pitchings turn it around. This starting pitching staff that you got cap is playoff worthy. You know that, right? And your bullpen has turned it around. You've always needed offense. That's the problem with this team, but you won't listen to good reason. They've blown 21 saves, 21. We're on pace to blow more than 30 saves. You're like our political discourse. You won't listen to the actual facts. I'm the one that retweeted it. I said that to you guys. You're showing me something. I said to you guys, yes, their offense is not good. You blew 21 saves. You entered the season without a legitimate closer. Al Zalai was never good enough. He was never tough enough to be a closer. You blew 21 saves unconscionable. But nothing on the offense. You didn't say that. Well, I'm saying it. The offense was never good enough to compete because the front office didn't do enough to add to this offense. Hold on a second. The same exact offense a year ago was third in the National League and Run scored, sixth in all the baseball. And at the end of April was eight games over 500 tied for first and that offense was playing fine. That will get you that in a dollar to 75 will get you on the L. That doesn't do anything. All I'm telling you is it was a non playoff team. If you sit, you picked them as a playoff team. That's my last year. We're talking about last year, right? They're not going to the playoffs because of their offense. Okay. They were third in National League. They didn't go last year because they got let down my management, not getting them bullpen help. That's the reason. And the Braves beat their ass at the end when you really needed to have wins because they blew saves. They scored. They didn't have a problem offensively last year. It was their bullpen and you entered the season with a guy who's not good enough to be a closer and now you've blown 21 say you save half of those. You're in the playoffs. Yeah, I can't. I can't guarantee that when you've got average offense. We also need this. Is that not fair? Like it's fair enough offense. We need the how many of the blown saves were actually losses because blown saves don't equal losses. I'd have to do some research and figure that out. That's where I've always had a problem with the first 20 or 21. Oh, if you win the 21 bone saves, well, you probably won three or four of them anyway. So you can't just convert them all this to wins. Here's here's my research. The offense is always just average and bland. You didn't. And that's what happens. We don't have a star cap. That's the reason why that's one of the reasons why the Cubs are in this position right now. Last year you held, you relied so heavily on Bellinger's bat and Suzuki's bat and it just wasn't enough. This year, the same thing. The arrogance of the Cubs of just hanging in there like, Oh, just run it back. Oh, you need it more than that. As much as I love Chris Morell, I'm like going the last ones that still think that he's got a bright future. Even he couldn't help the cause. Offensively, they were inept. You would call them in your recaps like they were, or you would just say about the how soft they were. Impedant. Right. I want to see the fact that their offense needs an upgrade, but they've added in the off season, a first baseman who's top three OPS among his position. Michael Bush had a really good year. Really good. Over the last just over 12 months, saying Suzuki's top 10 in OPS, top 10. Now, Dan's be sponsored has been terrible, terrible. No doubt about it. He craw Armstrong. Love him. He's fast. He's a good defender. His offense still has to get to league average. It's not even at league average. And their catcher's have been terrible till Amaya have been hot the last two, three weeks. Yes. Yes. They need more offense. No doubt about it. Typical Cubs coming at the end trying to be able to salvage this thing. Just like last year at the end, you needed it in July. Where was it in July? The clutch hitting. He didn't have it. That's why the hitting has always been an issue for me. Now, let's go around the NFL. Nick both sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football developer. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is front, but there he goes. This is not Detroit man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winning. He starts to comment. He calls me. This is a really thickly built guy, I mean, what's am so you're looking for on these things here? Yeah, the big news yesterday, Brandon, IU, the resolution seems close based on all the reporting and the reporting was, it's more likely that he's traded than that he reaches a long-term agreement with the San Francisco 49ers. The three teams that were rumored to be the most in on a trade, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cleveland Browns, and the New England Patriots, which of those three teams makes the most sense for Brandon IU? Probably the Cleveland Browns because they're all in to try and win. Yes. Why he'd want to go play in New England. They're going to be the worst team in the league. Horrible. Yeah. Pittsburgh makes sense. It does. It sounds like they're out as of this morning when I was listening to NFL Network coming over. It sounded like it was Cleveland or New England. That's what it sounded like, but that could change. Sounds like Cleveland cap would be the right spot for him. Now, I'll ask you, Shay, if wins above replacement is a thing in the NFL without IU, how does San Francisco fare? They've got Shanahan. I think Greg Jennings, the wide receiver, is still on the team. It sounds like if it's Cleveland, Amari Cooper might be the piece that gets moved to get Brandon IU there, and then San Francisco obviously would have Amari Cooper. I think they'll be fine relatively. Wide receivers don't do a ton for me in terms of a wins above replacement deal, but Brandon IU is the best non-Christian McCaffery weapon on their offense, so I don't think it would be a non-issue. Yeah. ESPN now says the New England Patriots and Browns both have been in contact and are interested training for IU. Pittsburgh Steelers also were interested to do not appear to be a potential trade destination any longer according to sources to ESPN. Yeah, Justin could use another weapon in Pittsburgh. No doubt about it. Definitely. No doubt about it. George Pickens needs some help, man. He can't do it all. Only problem for IU, if he goes to Pittsburgh, who's going to get on the ball, how will he get it? Is it FedEx? Carrier Pigeon? Yeah. And he's going to be Justin. Chargers. Careful. They'll be a cult out here waiting for you. They know I'm kidding. The Chargers that keep hearing debate about nationally mean a kind set of take I really agreed with where, look, the Chargers aren't fixed just because they hired Jim Harbaugh. Now they've got to deal with Justin Herbert, sounds like Planar Fashuitis is going to be a problem. That can be kind of long term, tough to get over, might be a problem all year. I've said this team's going under their win total. It feels like they might get off to a slow start, too, even with Jim Harbaugh. Yeah. Look, Jim's a really good football coach, really good. That team lost Keenan Allen, lost Mike Williams, lost Austin Echler. They got a banged up quarterback. They drafted a tackle. Great. They got bookends and Slater and Joe Alt, that's a really good pairing of tackles. I'd love to have those tackles, but, yeah, they are, I would say, I think they're an underplay and they're, well, what are they, eight and a half? Yeah. It's an underplay, however, whatever is, the problem with Justin Herbert, he'll be fine. He won't utilize his arm that much. I hope he doesn't have, like, a thing in his contract, these guys are over 4,000 yards because he won't reach it because they're going to run the hell out of the ball. Yeah. They probably will. So. But if he can't plant that foot, if Planar Fashuitis is an issue, that's a problem. That's okay. He's running the Michigan offense. Here you go. Just run the football. This is a... He's got Craig Roman, his offensive coordinator. He built the San Francisco Kaepernick offense and he built the Lamar Baltimore offense. All they did was run the ball. Yep. So, the Michigan offense might go to LA. Yeah, don't worry. Would that RPL heavy on the R about the RPL? The counter-stallions would pop. It's on you, man. Hey, you hear that? Jim Harbaugh said he knew nothing about it. Yeah. If you ask me, Jim Harbaugh's rolling Cheryl Moore right in front of the bus here. Take the bullet for me, pal. There you go. Do me a favor. Take the bullet. I got to pay. Now you take that. Go ahead. Will he beat out Russell Wilson for the Steelers quarterback job? Russell Wilson missed some practice with a cap injury, came back with the reporting and some of the rumoring out of the clubhouse there. The locker room is off of Fields. He gained the trust of his teammates by playing well with Wilson's injury. They like him more. Nobody likes Russell Wilson. We can pretty much take that as a fact. It's feeling early like the Steelers want Fields. Good for us. We'll take the fourth round pick. No surprise here. I'm not surprised by that report. Absolutely not. Not even about a build, it's just about locker room demeanor, bedside manner. I told you all I had from the Denver source I had about the day-to-day for Russell Wilson pain in the ass to deal with. And thank God for Sean Payton. He turned it around like you're not going to be the guy that you were before I got here. And I thought that Russell and Payton got along, but they had a good relationship. It's just that it was oil and water. Just keep in mind what Pete Carroll, Pete Carroll let Russell Wilson do whatever he wanted to do and it led to a championship and success. This is a different ball game man when you're with a different coach and Justin Fields from everything that we read is looking good. So as I mentioned, I'm rooting for him. I hope he has a really good run. I'm rooting for him. Absolutely. Doesn't it feel like business is usual a little bit? Fields is having a really good camp. You know he's well liked in locker rooms, everybody has good things to say about him and then you get on the field in the real games and you see what you see. I'm just telling you that if Russell Wilson starts off as the backup, starts to seize the backup, there's going to be a problem. I don't think he'll last the season in Pittsburgh if he starts the season as the backup. He is going to be pissed off. This was why a week ago I asked you, can these two actually coexist in Pittsburgh? Because look, if Russell Wilson's the starter and Fields is the backup and that's known and that's just going to be the dichotomy. I think it's more likely that they can actually coexist. If Fields is the starter, you're going to have issues. It is going to be a problem. He was okay toward the back end of the season, it's like all right Russ and Denver, we're going to pull you, we're praying instead of, we're going to, but to start the season that way, it wasn't even okay then he wanted to sue the team. It was, it was not good. That field. I'm just telling you that that's going to be a problem when the bell rings and Fields is a starter. That's bad, you get the big ego guy, Russell Wilson, big ego guy, anything else? That's it for around the NFL. All right, let's get to Albert Breyer then, he'll be joining us coming up next on The Captain Jayhood Morning Show. Captain Jayhood Live From Training Camp, fun ESPN Chicago, live coverage of training camp is presented by Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and is brought to you in part by the Chicago land and Northwest Indiana Chevy dealers. Captain Jayhood on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With you till 10 o'clock the Mike Greenberg comes in at 10 o'clock followed by Carmen Yerko and Waddell and Silly they'll both be broadcasting live from House Hall if we are here this morning, Blaken Abdullah at 630 right into White Sox baseballs that take on the A's right here on your home for Bears and White Sox ESPN 1000. 312-332-ESPN-3323776 is our telephone number and cap of, as we're trying to figure out what we're going to do at Albert Breyer, he's not with us just as of yet, but obviously here at House Hall and we cannot wait for hard knocks tonight. Right, we're going to have a post game show on our YouTube channel, the ESPN Chicago YouTube channel with a bunch of our staff all giving their thoughts after it airs tonight. I'm really, really excited to watch this. This is one of those nights where put a game on over there, put a game on over there because a sock start I want to say 840, Cubs are a 705 game and then bingo we get the hard knocks show and it's brought to you all our post game by Dr. Pepper. So big Dr. Pepper guy, in fact I have to get this, there's a Dr. Pepper flavor that I got at the draft when we, when I was at Soldier Field the night of the draft, Dr. Pepper had a setup, zero sugar, limited edition, zero sugar, coconut Dr. Pepper, the greatest. I went back to the store, I bought like 6, 12 packs to have for the summer. My kids liked it, my, everybody, I'm around, oh can I get one of those? Gone, I go to the store, out, it was limited time offer. I was crest balling and guess what, it's back. It's back. I just bought a whole bunch of it and now really excited. So Dr. Pepper will bring you that tonight. But to watch the show and from what Jason Leisure, our buddy from the Sun Times wrote this morning and the Sun Times, this is called the newspaper, it's a really good concept. When HBO airs it, you are going to hear some things that you had no idea and many of us did not know they got intel and info on things that we, none of us knew roughly 400 hours of footage from practice meetings and other off field activities will have been edited down into a sharply produced one hour episode, 400 hours of stuff so far. How cool is that? Well, it makes sense. Of course the Chicago Bears have to take a look at it themselves and say, okay, we can put this in, let's not put this in, you know, I'm sure that that's all part of the process as well. They won't, I know the Bears won't be as dumb as the Giants were with their hard knocks. It's an expose on the Giants business. You saw the clips, Cap. Not great. Wide open with it. Like I understand it's supposed to be access, but it made the organization look less than some of the behind the scenes negotiations that really was not moneyball. We were seeing there from Joe Shane, they had some stuff there. It's like, what in the world? Strange. I remember when they did the Cleveland Browns hard knocks. Yep. And it was, what's his face? Huge jacks in the head coach. Yeah. Had him walk into Lake Erie and cleanse themselves of the Owen 16 season, and he was fired by like week six. Yes. Just none of that. I don't want to see like, we're cleansing ourselves of the quarterback narrative and washing ourselves off in Lake Michigan. Please spare us. Like, let's just see people acting normal and doing football business. Yeah. Do better football business. And that's why I love polls. Ryan polls will be with us at 9 30 today right here in our studio at Hallis Hall. We are at Hallis Hall and it was super cool. I parked my car and we have a little bit of a walk coming from where we get to park and all of a sudden all these luxury vehicles are going by me. Yes. And I'm like, oh, there's a player. There's a player. There's a player. And then here came the bus with all the rookies coming from the hotel. Oh, dude, I was like, game on, man, football's back. A little bit of a walk as if I'm parked in Highland Park and had to walk over. Exactly. That's a little bit of a walk, little bit. We're in Lake Forest. That was in Hollywood. That's where my car is. That's it. But that's, but here's the thing. I'm looking forward to it. I remember discussing with you my thoughts on hard knocks. I said, do we have to have this? We've never had this. And now I'm looking forward to it, Cap, because at the time I was telling you, it's like, you know, hard knocks, contrived, but now I understand why it's a big deal because we've never seen the Bears do this before. I would imagine if I'm the McCasky family based on how the Bears have been operating before Ryan Paul's got here, I probably wouldn't want cameras in here either. Because we've seen, because, well, we know the end results, right? We've seen, like, losing seasons and the organization not looking well. But this feels different. If you're ever going to have hard knocks, it would be this time now with the Chicago Bears. Yeah, I'm excited and I think the football operations side of things wants the rest of the league to go, whoa, things are different. I didn't know they had those kind of facilities. Look at the vibe. For example, DJ Moore gets his extension a week ago for big money. And on an average annual value, a chef's are reported the biggest in the history of the Bears, the biggest. And they brought champagne into the locker room and everybody was mobbing DJ Moore and they're celebrating with the champagne. Dude, that's the culture that Ryan Paul's has built here. It's totally different. Let's go. Let's hear from Matty Reflow's, the head coach for the Chicago Bears. It's funny. We were talking about hard knocks. When he was asked, what are you hoping is on display on hard knocks? I'm sure he's privy to it. What did you say about hard knocks? You know, I told you guys in the beginning that, hey, just be authentic. Be yourself. That's good enough. Trust me. You know, we're working, right? We've got winning habits here and winning habits. You keep doing right. Things are going to go right. And just do that. You guys can see it. You know, we practice the way we finish, the way we hustle on the backside, you know, and then we just got to keep getting the lines. You know, I want to see that physical part. I want to have that, hopefully that shows that we're physical on the front lines. But in terms of operation, in terms of our culture, all those things are there. What he's pretty much saying is that we're going to display what we do in practice and that's play hard. Yeah. And I'm sure that he was probably privy to choose some clips in particular that shows how strong the offensive defensive line is because he wants to show the grit, the grit of Bears football. Yeah. And I liked there in the trailer, which we've played. We have it. And when right at the beginning, when you hear Iberflu say, this is your team, like I loved it. Loved it. And that's why guys like playing for him. He empowers them to do their job. Period. Be authentic was a little close to a VU from my liking. Be your own mat, please. But every coach says that. Everyone. Every one of them says be authentic. Be yourself. Play with your hair. And they all have the same lexicon. Little close for BU. He didn't say it. For my liking. Little close. I mean, how do you want him to say it? How do you want him to say it? Bust your ass. So yeah. There's a B. It's a B. You got to be authentic. Yes. Yes. And that's what these guys are. Caleb Williams is as close to authentic as you can get. Yes. And that's what I love about him. He's cool, man. Now you got to go out and play. Yeah. That's what it comes down to. The personality aside wins, Jay. What do you want to say about him? I'm a bottom line fan. I just want to just be able to see progress. That's what it comes. Never when Mitch went to the game and he was chugging beer with the old lineman. Yeah. What was it? At a Bulls game or whatever he was at. And his teammates are like that dude's awesome. And he's like, "Oh, I'm going to go to the game." And his teammates are like, "That dude's awesome. We love him." He couldn't play. In the end, people went, "Okay, great. He's a good guy. He can't play. On. Move on." Now Justin, they move on. It's Caleb. Everybody loves the dude. He's a braced this pressure and this expectation and this role and this amazing city for football. Now you got to play. Speaking of football, a former Michigan coach and now with the Chargers, Jim Harbaugh says he was not aware. His ignorance, a reason for him to skirt these violations in Michigan. Here from the head coach for the Chargers, coming up next, Cap and Jay Hood on Chicago's home for sports. Cap and Jay Hood live from training camp on ESPN Chicago. My coverage of training camp is presented by Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and is brought to you in part by the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Chevy dealers. Cap and Jay Hood on Chicago's home for sports, ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app as we broadcast live from Hallows Hall and Lake Forest. Still to come on the show, we will hear from Ryan Polls, the general manager for the Bears will stop by right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN 1000 and don't forget the ESPN Chicago app, not only on ESPN 1000 but also on the ESPN Chicago app on Game Day. There's a tab right there and that way you can be able to hear not only pre-season but the regular season and hopefully cap the post-season right here on ESPN Chicago. I would hope. How about Jim Harbaugh? Let's go to El Segundo, California, shall we? Let's go. Let's go there. We're going to talk about Jim Harbaugh. So after being one of seven members of the 2023 Michigan football program accused of violating NCAA rules in a draft of the NCAA's Notice of Allegations obtained by ESPN, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh denied any wrongdoing. We got to hear this, Jay Moore, the thoughts from Jim Harbaugh amid the speculation around the Michigan program. Never lie, never cheat, never steal. I was raised with that lesson. I have raised my family on that lesson. I have preached that lesson to the teams that I've coached. No one's perfect if you stumble, you apologize and you make it right. Today, I do not apologize. I did not participate, was not aware, nor complicit in those set allegations. So for me, it's back to work and attacking with an enthusiast and unknown to mankind. The thoughts there from Jim Harbaugh, and by the way, the attacking with the enthusiasm unknown to mankind is at the end of his emails, his email signature and his cell phone number for his emails. Love it. Cap, let me just tell you something. Here's a different way to talk about Jim Harbaugh, how about this? Because the NCAA does not have a ZAR or anyone at the top of the NCAA to be able to levy the fine suspensions, whatever you want to do. This is Jim Harbaugh. It's almost like people are saying, Jim's in the NFL now it's okay. You and I would do hours on stuff like this when it was Penn State scandal, when it was the USC scandal, all these, the SMU scandal. We would talk about this, Dave Bliss and Baylor. We would be talking about this for hours on end, having guests left and right. What's happening with this scandal? What's happening with that? What's the NCAA going to do? It's almost like not just us, but I think that the people at large are looking at this and it's just like, you know, Jim's statement is right. He says, never lie, never steal, never cheat, Jim Harbaugh. It's okay. Move on. Seriously, the stories here, we heard the statement, but I don't feel like people have an uproar or really angry at Harbaugh over this. Well, let me ask you a question. This would be the question I would ask Jim, Jim, if this was going on in your program and you are in charge and you are where the buck stops at your desk, how in the hell would you not know that your teams have someone else's play calls and then a guy on your staff is in a Bobby Valentine disguise with a mustache on someone else's sideline? How would you not know that? And if you don't know that, you're out of control in your program. You may be a damn good football coach. That would be like some insane thing going on at the station and Danny, who's the head of all the content, doesn't know what's going on. Well, oh, wow, well, this is, this is, Danny, wow, wasn't me. This is why I said, what I said, Harbaugh is just very simply using show more as a human shield. You're going to wear all these bullets, but he's not only doing that. He's looking every single person that watched that thing in the eye going, I knew nothing about this. Never lie. Never steal. Never cheat. Did not know this was going on. But do you? Then that's insane. But do you think the people at large, my greater point is, do you believe that the people at large care about this story? Because think about. Yeah, I think so. I don't think so. I think that that statement just, it sits on its head like never lie, never cheat, never steal. He's not in the NFL. He's not in college football anymore. You ran to the NFL because he knew that the pressure was coming and it's like, well, what's the next step? What's the next step? Who's going to suspend Chamorro Moore? Charon Moore. Charon Moore. Who's going to do that? The Big Ten. Well, they could. The President and the NCAA certainly could. Who's that? Is that Emmert still in there? I think it's Mark Emmert. Okay. They have no teeth anymore. No, it's Charlie Baker, the old Massachusetts governor. He took over. That's correct. He can suspend Charon Moore. He will. But this is where, like, Michigan wanted to fight this all so badly last year and they said nothing was going on, well, it's not an if anymore. It happened. We have all the evidence. We have the text messages. We've recovered everything. And Jim saying, I didn't know anything. I didn't do anything. So now it's up to Michigan. How badly do you want to protect Jim Harbaugh? Because if you want to fight this and Amicus brief it out and go to court and do all that stuff, well, then you open up Discovery and then Jim's going to be implicated. And if you don't want to fight it, then you just let Charon Moore wear the bullets for Jim Harbaugh. Jim is going to stay in the NFL as long as he can and pretend like this didn't happen. He's not going back to college cap as far as I could tell. I know. He is. He's never going back. But just like Pete Carroll ran away from the story. All I'm telling you is that when I look at what's happening with stories like this, it reminds me of Carroll. It reminds me of Joe Paterno in which they always use the excuse or the reason I knew nothing about it. Because you well know, now the reporter talk show hosting you asked a salient question. Like how do you not know the coach in you who and you seen this before, now I'm saying it was your team, but you've seen it before where the coach is like, you know what, whatever is going on, handle it. I'm just trying to win the next game. Seriously, where it's away from like coach, hey, the coach said we got to take care of this. Don't talk to coach about it. We got to handle this behind the scenes. We know that that happens, cap. Happens today. But for him to say he knew nothing about it, and then there's how many different shots of Connor Stallions standing with the OC when they had the ball, standing with the DC when the other team had the ball. I mean, really? Do you knew nothing? This is why he comes across as Mr. Magoo as if all he knows is football. He does. He comes across almost at all at times. He's actually a little bit more within these press conferences than he was at Michigan, for whatever reason. He's a little bit more smooth, it comes out a little better. But ultimately, cap, he's just saying like, he might have known, I didn't know as so many people in the sidelines. I didn't know. That's what he uses. We've heard this before, fraternal, turning a blind eye to what was happening in his programs. But you don't think he would, if he didn't truly know, hey, Shay, my DC, hey, Shay, how come Eric's standing with you every single time? What is he, and he's talking to you? What are you guys talking about? Nothing. Did our guys get a central Michigan gear handed to him through the gate at Spartan Stadium by an assistant coach who came from Michigan, and we're expected to believe nobody at Michigan knew what was going on. Like, come on. Well, Michigan, yeah. What I'm saying is that Jim can use this as an excuse. It's a time-honored tradition of a coach that is in trouble, Shay, that will say, I didn't see it. I don't know what's going on. And I do think people are mad about it. Probably not everyone, not the entire country is outraged. But if you're a fan of a Big Ten school that was suddenly just getting pasted by Michigan every year, yeah, you're probably a little frustrated. But I don't think a Charger fan cares. No, Charger fans don't. And if he was the coach here, everyone would be like, hey, we got a Harbaugh. They wouldn't care. No, NFL fans shouldn't care. I'm making the point, like, if you're a Penn State fan, you should be livid. If you're an Ohio State fan, you should be livid. Michigan State fan, I think it's funny because nobody's going to respect your title and we can move on and laugh at you. There you go. There you go. It's a section of our audience cap that thinks that Harbaugh should be the coach today, that we should be sitting down where Harbaugh today on cap and J Goode, right? People thought that he should have been gone and that Jim Harbaugh should be the coach. Now he went to the NFL because he knew this was coming. So of course he knew. Correct. Otherwise, here's a guy here that loved Bo and loved Michigan. He wanted to have a Bo-like run, 20-plus years. He wanted that. But then when that happened, I'm out of here. Yeah. Oh, God. Then Michigan didn't mean as much when he knows that the NCAA's coming. He was suspended twice last year, right? That's going by the school and once by the big 10. But not by the NCAA. They're still investigating. With no teeth. Right. See? They move like the Ice Age. Crazy. (laughing)
