LOVE HURTS

Hurt comes not from the love, but our expectations and attachment. It's not the heart that is hurt, but our ego.

Your morning ray of sunshine, ba'an and saffkamaari, love hurts, so we think. This is basic belief that when we love someone totally, open our hearts completely to them, we also make ourselves vulnerable to them, can be hurt by them, like if we lose them etc. It is true that when we love someone, we open ourselves to hurt, but the hurt comes not from the love, but our expectations and attachment. It's not the heart that is hurt, but our ego. Left to itself, love is selfless, absolute and conditional. The heart knows only to give and receive love, not to possess or even want to possess. The ego on the other hand, once controlled, hence expectations from the other person and the relationship, a desire to own, building one's identity based on the existence of the other person in our life. Hurt comes from the loss of the same, the blow to the ego, they don't want us, we must not be good enough. We say when I love, it's all or nothing. But love needs to be all and nothing, all love and none of the expectations. Granted, that this is an ideal situation and too hard to do, because we are human. There will be some conditionality, some expectations and that is okay. But we shouldn't be under the illusion that heartbreak and hurt come from love, they come only from these expectations. This understanding becomes paramount when we are going through that pain, because only when we know that our suffering is on account of our attachment to that person, can we detach, heal and move on, sunshine in your day.
