After you buy a new house or a car, you're usually swirling an excitement. The pure joy mixed with a little bit of overwhelm because it's a big purchase and really mixed in with that joy. The words that you want to be thinking about are "like a good neighbor, state farm is there." That's the phrase that will help you feel good knowing you have people who care to help you file a claim or find the coverage for the things that you want to protect. And listen, sometimes the topic of insurance can get a little bit overwhelming, but it really doesn't have to be complicated because, like a good neighbor, state farm is there. So with those big new purchases like that car, that house, you want to be thinking about long-term coverage and protect the things that you love. And the key here is being able to customize. State Farm has the options to fit your unique needs, which means you can talk to your agent to get the coverage you need and have coverage options to protect the things you value most. Plus, you can file a claim right in the State Farm mobile app and reach a real person when you need to talk to someone, which is super key these days. So when you need help protecting the things that matter most, remember to say, like a good neighbor, state farm is there. Six rings in football things is back day 11 of Patriots training camp. I'm Tom Carroll filling in for Andy Hart and Fitzy. And I'm here with my good buddy, long-time friend, Nick Coit, ABC6, and WEEI Providence. Coiti, what's up buddy? First of all, I love the name. That sounds like something that Fitzy would would cook up. You know, I love it. That gets me excited to talk some past football. Yeah, I don't know who came up with the name, but I think you're on to something here that feels like a Fitzy operation. Not to say that Andy's not creative. He's a very creative guy, but I'm just saying that sounds like, yeah, six rings football things. That sounds like Fitzy. Go figure. Exactly. Exactly. So you've been covering the pats here professionally for, this will be your 11th season. So sorry to make you feel old. We were talking about it. I'm like, oh my gosh, this is camp 11. That's wild. But I'm very, very fortunate. My first camp, my first season covering the pats was 2014. That literally was the perfect time to come in. Good season. Yeah, they're still my favorite. Yeah, so it's been 11 years, but this one's, this one's a little different. Yeah, so this is your first Girard Mayo camp. And, you know, people have been trying to point out the differences throughout camp here because it's just a different animal here. What has been your view so far? I think there are a lot of similarities in the way that things are happening, that they're being run, you know, in terms of what I'm seeing day to day. I think it's pretty similar to what we've seen in the past. And that's to be expected. I think you have a program set in here, you know, and a guy that's the head coach that played as part of that program. I'm not totally surprised. You know, but I think when you're talking about like the biggest differences, I think, honestly, or when a guy like Girard Mayo steps up to the microphone and says, yeah, we're going to play our four quarterbacks on Thursday. Right. He sees an opener. I'm like, why? He literally says that's more than you got in the past. So, you know, be happy with it. So, you know, that's a good thing. I mean, the whole, obviously, one of the big stories of camp was the judon situation last Monday in the way that played out. That was a little different from what we've seen in the past. But I think, you know, day to day operation, you know, it's, it's a football camp, you know, the offense screws up or they jump off sides or whatever, then they're running laps. Like that's those things happen still. So it's, it's still a football camp. So there's still a lot of similarities. Yeah, and it's funny because early on in camp, people were pointing out, oh, it's a little sleepy and they're not hitting as much and it's a lot of drill stuff as opposed to team drills. And it seems like it has really ramped up more towards what the, you know, meat and potatoes type of guy wants to see. And, you know, you had Dietrich Wise after, after practice today talking about how, yeah, man, it's been a tough camp. He's not holding back. You know, it's, it was real hot yesterday and we're still out here hitting and, um, you know, that's what you want to see from a young head coach, you know, even though he's been a more player friendly, media friendly guy, it has still been a productive camp from a work perspective. Yeah. And I, the physicality thing does stand out from yesterday. You're right. Like, when they put the pads on, they're really hitting. I mean, I always say in any sport, Tom, that a team and a good team usually takes on the personality of its coach. So we were talking about a tough physical practice, a tough physical camp. John Mayo was a tough physical line pattern for this team. So it makes total sense. That's why when, you know, we're talking about Yukon basketball and they're showing a motion of their yelling and screaming. That's Dan Hurley as a basketball coach. That's, that's what I think of. So when I heard tough physical, I'm like, yeah, I think Gerard would want them to hit a little bit more. And you know, when you see that, I think it's probably actually refreshing because of the way that, you know, camps are run these days, not just transitioning from the old way of like maybe when Belichick first was running camp here, but just the way that football camp in general with injuries and making sure that guys stay healthy and limiting the time when they're in pads and being physical and all that. That's happened at the professional level. It's happened at the college level. Believe me, I cover Ivy League football with Brown. Like there's been a lot of regulations with that. So, you know, I think it is a little bit refreshing to see some of that physicality, you know, in camp. I know, you know, you want to keep guys healthy, but you also want them to actually practice and simulate playing football because in a couple days, they're going to be playing football again. Yeah. And you just don't get enough of that from what we used to get, right? Like when I used to come to campus, kids, it almost felt like you were watching live game action. And it just isn't like that anymore. So to get close to that is refreshing. And speaking of live game action, see that transition there? That's a big market transition here. We have a live game on Thursday. It's a preseason game, but like you mentioned, Mayo told us all four quarterbacks are going to play. He told us if guys are healthy, they're going to play more than we've gotten in the past. What are your expectations for Thursday? What do you want to see coming out of preseason game one? Now that we only get three games, they get a little bit more scrutinized, I'd say, because back, you know, way back three years ago, whenever it was when there was four, the first preseason game was almost you didn't even need to watch it because it was just so bare bones, right? And then the third preseason game, that was the one that everyone really gave a crap about. So going into game one in the new world of preseason, what are you looking for? My eyes are just they're fixated on the offensive side of the ball. I just I have such confidence that the defense is going to be at least solid. I think they have a lot of talented players there. There's a lot of continuity there. It's I think this team is going to go as far as the offense can make progress and make plays and score points. I mean, I think that's just sort of the way it is, because that's where I think most of the question marks are. So what does it look like on the field operationally on Thursday? How much progress do they show against a team in a different uniform? What is the offensive line going to be like and how are they going to hold up against another team that's going full speed? I think the offensive line, I think, is such a huge story with this team because we still have not seen a combination they really stuck to. I think the last couple of days, few days, you know, you've seen maybe something that they think could work here. They've had Badarian Loet left tackle in Calvin Anderson right, but you want that to look okay in game actions. Yeah, and be consistent for more than, you know, a series, right? And they've been flipping guys around and I think that's the biggest thing to look for is offensive line reps and what do they end up going with at tackle on both sides, because the interior of that offensive line, we know what that's going to be. Yes. So that is definitely something we'll be highlighting. And then also Drake May, right? Like the number three overall pick is going to get out there. We know we're going to see him. He's going to play how much he'll play. We don't know, but you want to see that guy at game speed because what we've seen so far at camp while it's been physical and we've seen hitting, you just really don't know until you see him in a real game situation. And who is he out there with? Yeah, that's going to be a big thing. I would like to say, and we saw in this practice on Tuesday, he did get some reps here with guys that you would consider probably first string guys that are probably going to start, particularly with the offensive line. That's a good thing. I mean, everybody keeps saying like, you know, when do you put them in? When does he start? All that. And then, you know, the pushback is always, well, how is the offensive line? Can they protect their young asset, their young quarterback here? So I would like to see him get, you know, maybe some reps with with ones or what you consider ones. You know, but it's funny, I say that. And I think to myself, well, when you're talking about on the outside with the receivers, who are the ones, are the ones, the young guys that have really stepped forward and camp and shined. And if they are, I mean, I'd love to see those guys work with me because I just think I think there's a chemistry that's been being built off the field with guys like Polk and Baker. And even on the field now during camp, you're seeing them, you know, more and more, I think, you know, become in sync. But those guys in general, it doesn't matter who the quarterback is. I think they played really well. I think they're really solid. And so I would love to see Drake play with them. But you also just want to see those guys in game action, because I think they've probably been some of the most exciting parts of camp. 100%. And, you know, Drake has continued to look better in full pads. I think the first few days, it was very shaky. And especially on Judon craziness day, it was bad day for Drake May. And now he's looking good back there. And he's looking good with those young guys. You know, whether it's in 11 on 11s or if it's in some of those one on one drills, he's having moments, he's having peaks. I always talk about the peaks in the valleys for these young guys in camp. So, you know, you get to see him, hopefully carry those peaks into a live action game. And let's see what the kids got. Again, it's only preseason one. So, you're not going to say that the guy should never play in a game ever again if he's bad on Thursday. But you want to see at least a few moments that you can take away from and feel good about heading into the later part of this month. I keep saying around here, Tom, there are not a lot of Patriots fans in the New England region that would make great doctors because they don't have any patience. No patience, but I'm pumped. There you go. They just like, it's, it's, I mean, I've heard people say, well, you know, he's struggling now, so he's not going to be any good. He's a boss. Come on. Like, just hold on a second. Like, let's give the kids some time. And we were talking about that on our Saturday morning radio shows got caught this unite. Get the plug in. There you go. And it was just, it's very much like just, you got to give it time because, as you said, Tom, there's going to be growing pains. And I think there are certain things and certain aspects where, you know, he looks great. I think you saw it within a practice on Tuesday. He throws a couple of fades, you know, to the backside of the end zone. Beautiful throws. Connected with Kesha on booty, one of the best plays of the day. But then they start running the hurry up a little bit down the other end of the field and things speed up on them. And it's like, okay, all right, there's some things to learn here. There's some progress to me. And that's running a hurry up offense, a new offense for everyone involved against a veteran defense that has played together for a few years and is really talented in the rain. Yeah. So context is always really important. And again, I try and be glass half full with this team because new vibe, new quarterback, new offense, let's be positive here, right? There's going to be plenty of time for the negative for this team this season. We know it's not going to be an eight nine win team. It just isn't. And I know that there's some members of the media that are uber positive and think that their roster could get there. I don't think they're there yet. But let's focus on the moments. So then a year, two years from now, this team is going to be in a much different place. I keep saying that at the end of this season, Tom, if the arrow is pointing up, that is a successful season for the Patriots. I take the wind total out of it. I take because a lot of it with the wind total is it's less about, you know, this team and it's more about the schedule they're playing. It's really, really tough and really tough to see. And the division is going to be really tough. It's there's a lot there. But if the arrow is pointed up, if you look at it and you say, well, you know, the arc fence make progress. Well, this guy's pretty good. Oh, well, you know, Oh, Jalen Polk was running for rookie of the year or whatever. I'm not saying he's going to be running for the work, but you never know he's pretty good. We like to make him. But just things where you're looking at it and you're saying, well, I can see next season the arrow going this way, pointing up and saying, we can build on this, this, this and this, that will be a successful season for the Patriots. I don't have it exactly in front of me. But there was a three year window for the Lions here with Dan Campbell, right? Year one, they won like no games. But towards the end of the season, they started being really competitive in those losses and almost won a few. And then by the end of that year, they were one of the more fun teams to watch, even though they didn't have a really good record. The second year, it was the same thing. Arrow was pointing in the right direction. They didn't win a ton of games, but they were a competitive team. People knew that they had successful good players, good young players that were going to be stars on that roster. And then look what happened last year. There are a few bad coaching decisions away from possibly playing in the Super Bowl against Patrick Mahomes, a team they beat in week one. So, you know, the sliding door effect in the NFL for stuff like that is always fun to look at. But if the Patriots can kind of follow that model here, don't freak out, stay patient with the young guys when they're losing games, but things I test wise look a certain way, that's going to be what you should focus on here. Because look, last season, I test wise, it was bad. It was really bad. So that's why change happened. Now, it's all about looking towards the future here. And you talked about next season, and this dovetails well into the place I want to wrap us with next year's 2025 first round pick is likely going to be top 10, maybe top five. Do not trade that pick for Brandon Iuch. Agreed. And I know Fitzy touched on the Brandon Iuch stuff earlier in the day on this feed. So apologies for doubling up. But there was some stuff at camp today that I think fans wanted to try to connect to the Iuch stuff, you know, the Charlie from always sunny meme of him on the chalkboard. I think it's actually from horrible bosses. Like there's all sorts of people on the internet doing that today. And let's just break that all down here. So Judon came to practice, left practice, came back out in sweats, didn't have a helmet, wasn't on participant the rest of practice. Elliot Wolf was here. He came to practices throughout the training camp season. That means nothing. Kendrick Bourne comes out late into practice and just shorts in a hoodie. So people are trying to connect the dots. Okay, Judon left practice and came back. And what does that mean? Is he going to be a trade chip? Oh, Bourne isn't out here. It's wet outside. The guy just tore his ACL. He's still recovering. So look, you can try and connect the dots and maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't think any of those things that happened at practice today are connected to a possible brand and Iuch trade. And with that said, the point I made at the beginning of this little section here, don't give up that first round pick for Iuch. That's that's where I would draw the line. If it's a second and a veteran, or it's a second and a third and whoever else, yes, hell yes, do that. But I'm not touching that first round pick. Yeah, I don't and I don't think that they will go that far if they're going to make this deal. I'm with you. I would probably say second a third and doesn't even have to be the same year. It could be like a 25 second and a 26 third, something like that. And then maybe a player and then it sounds like that would be a reason because then you have to put the contract and the money on the table and you're going to be dishing out a lot of money. They should be willing to do that. I think they are willing to do that clearly being in the sweepstakes here. But you're right. All the things we saw at practice today. It's the Larry Fitzgerald standing at the right Logan airport thing. It's like, I would actually say evaluate wolf was not on the field and Kendrick Bourne had not made the appearance today. I would have read more into that than I would them being out there. Seam wolf multiple times out there. He's been out there a lot during camp. Bourne's been out there. It was a rainy day. Why are you going to go out there and work out in the field or to an ACL and recovery? Like you're not going to do that. So yes, I wouldn't read too much into that stuff. Everybody's excited. I get it. Everybody's excited. If that happens, we talk about the timeline and the arrow pointing up. You get Brandon Iyuk. That's going to speed some things up. Absolutely. You go from a like five wind ceiling to seven. In maybe Jacobi per set, you let him stay in there as the starter longer into the season than maybe he's going to. I'm with you. It is exciting. This isn't to say that Kendrick Bourne couldn't eventually be a part of the package that does get this deal done. He used to play with the Niners in that Shanahan system. It makes sense. But as far as the short term, the next X amount of hours here, this could be moot by tomorrow morning. But everyone just pump the brakes a little bit here. Relax. We're going to get there at some point. It's exciting. It is. It's exciting that their name would be connected here because the last time they had an elite number one wide receiver was maybe the guy they brought in for 11 days during the 2019 season. They had to push out the door quickly. That was probably the last one. But before that, maybe we're going back to Randy. They have not had an elite number one big money sort of guy for a while. And really, when you can put a guy like that, they've had guys that, Julian Ellman plays, it's a different thing. It's different with Rob Gronkowski at tight end. Of course, they've had elite weapons, but an elite number one outside receiver, it's been a while. And really, what they just, what they could use is a guy that defenses look at on the other side and say, we need the game plan for this guy. And then it opens things up for some of the young receivers who I think have been again, one of the most exciting parts of camp. And not to go on a huge tangent here about Ieuk, but one thing I think is important to say, I think he's become kind of an underrated commodity because of how good the players are in that offense for the 49ers. His big play ability is something that is going to leap off the page with whatever new team he is on. I mean, he had a 76 yard touchdown last year. He averaged 12.6 yards a catch, career high. The guy is super talented. Now, is he Randy Moss AB level? Obviously not. Few are, but maybe in a new team in a new system with the right quarterback, he could be. I don't know that New England is the place right away that would showcase that. But if Drake maybe comes a guy and looks like a guy that is worthy of the number three pick and you pair him with a guy like Ieuk who has that type of ability, that's something to get really excited about. So again, I understand why the Charlie Day meme is circulating around, but let's wait and see. We'll see. We'll see, but it's exciting. Nick, thanks for joining me, man. This was fun. Thanks, TC.
