Popcorn Counter: The Song-Movies-Name-Quiz

(Turns to camera) You may remember that back in the 1980s and 90s they used to name a lot of films after songs. Seriously. A LOT. It was like an actual thing. So come and join us at the Popcorn Counter this week, where we’ve turned those Song-Named-Movie-Tune-Films into a Song-Named-Movie-Tune-Film-QUIZ. (Cut to title card with music) Forty movies named after songs, with plenty of silence while we try to guess the answers, and a few added clues for the hard of thinking. Play along with us at home, in the car or during surgery. Can you beat our score? (Cut to graphic of an animated question mark with sparkles) And what’s so embarrassing about movie number forty? (Musical sting, probably a trombone?) [Music] Hello and welcome to the popcorn counter here at The Two Real Cinema Club. I am James Rizika. I'm André's Laurenti. If you've listened to this podcast a bit, you will appreciate by now that you and I, we each bring different things to this podcast, right? Yeah, you bring all the smarts. Now you say you bring great experience in cyclopaedic film knowledge, you bring intelligent observations, you bring witty jokes and I bring a microphone. So I've organized another quiz night here because basically the quiz night at the popcorn counter is one of those very rare opportunities where I get to pretend for a few minutes that I know something that you don't. You say all those nice things because you're about to make me look really bad and knowledgeable. So like a last month, I think, or the month before we had a quiz about eponymous movies, 40 movies named after people's names. So I've done another one so this time, so after we watched Fly Me to the Moon two weeks ago, I have got a list of 40 movies that are named after songs. So I'm going to see whether you can figure out what each, each movie's title is. They're all named after songs. So you get the point if you get, if you get me the title, you don't have to tell me the song or whose song it or anything like that. It's just, you know, the movie title. A few simple rules. The song must predate the movie. So it can't be a movie that ended up with a song named after it. So Goldfinger or Skyfall or whatever, do not count. All I want is the name of the film. This is a hard one. So I think this is quite a bit harder than the eponymous movie quiz. So I reckon if you can get 70% that's 28 out of 40, I'll be very impressed. I just need to clarify that for me, as a teacher, 60% is actually passing. So 24 is my goal. If I had 28, I would be very happy. If you get 24, that's a pass. Otherwise you have to reset the year. Teacher is lowering the bar. It's always a good sign for education. As a point of order, from last quiz, it has been pointed out to me that last time I said that Constantine was the first name of Keanu Reeves' character in the film Constantine. Actually, apparently it wasn't. He was John Constantine. So I got that wrong. So I apologize that the people appointed that out to me. I've tried very hard to be meticulous this time. I'm quite prepared for people to write in or stop me in the street and tell me that I am wrong, though I am used to it. In an index, he'd be Constantine comma John. So you're vaguely correct. One other thing to point out was that movies named after songs happened a lot in the 90s. It's a real 90s thing. It didn't happen very much at all before the 80s. So yeah, so most of these are from the last kind of 30s. Vaguely my wheel, my wheelhouse, but all wheel. I'm memory place again. Memory to the wheelhouse. Oh, good. Right. Okay. You ready to start? Yeah. Okay. Well, I'm not ready, but I'm ready to start. Number one. This is probably the easiest of a lot. I'm only going to give you one word as a clue to start with. Prince. Pribble Rain. Pribble Rain, yes. 1984. You could also have had Under the Cherry Moon, named after a Prince song, starring Prince Graffiti Bridge, named after a Prince song, starring Prince. Sign off the times. Yeah. All of all of his movies are just named after songs by him. Who is surprised? Okay. One down. Right. Number two. 1986. Molly Ringwald, James Spader, written by John Hughes. Pretty in pink. Pretty in pink. Excellent. Both colors. Are the groups by color? What are the four different groups with 10? The first 10 are the easy ones. I'll tell you that. Pretty in pink. Do you know who made the song? Pretty in pink? Yeah. Psychedelic furs, isn't it? Psychedelic furs from 1981. Yeah, great song. Right. Stepping forward a few years. 1990. This film was Julia Roberts' big breakout. Opposite Richard Gere. Pretty woman. Pretty woman. So pretty in purple. I'm under it. I've got it. I feel good. It's a very girly first round. Three out of three. Who sang Pretty Woman? Well, it was originally Roy Orbison. Roy Orbison, 1964. Right. Back to the 80s. 1983. This dance drama was directed by Sylvester Stallone. It was also written by Sylvester Stallone. The tango? No. He read it with normal Wexler. This film is a sequel. It stars John Travolta. It is the sequel to a very successful dance movie. It's not called Another Saturday Night or something like that. It's not. It is named after a song that appeared on the soundtrack of that film you have just referred to. Can you name the original film? That was the original Saturday Night Fever. Yeah. So what was the sequel to Saturday Night Fever called? And I'll tell you this, when they teach us how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation, they tell us, if you want to reach like 100 to 120 beats per minute, you have to do your compressions to the sound of this song. What is the song? Staying alive. Staying alive. Because you're trying to keep someone alive, right? Staying alive. See, they've even thought about it. Yeah. Staying alive. I should I give you the point when actually it's stay in alive. There's an apostrophe. I think that's what I said. I'm trying to say stay in alive. Stay in alive. I wasn't even listening. Stupid articulation. Okay. So what are the rare modern films on the list? 2019. This is a rom-com-ish film directed by Danny Boyle. It stars Himesh Patel, Liddy James, and Ed Sheeran. I think it's yesterday. It is yesterday. Well done. Five for five. I can't believe it's going to be easy. Yeah. That's funny. Okay. All right. Here we go. Do you know which Beatles song has the song? Which Beatles album has the song yesterday on it? Now, this is one of those things where it might be different in the States. Then, but there was an album here I think called yesterday and today. Okay. So it's from Help. It is from the UK. I think yesterday appears on Help. Okay. Probably. Probably here too. Okay. No, no, no. But Help in itself is on the Beatles. Is that a soundtrack, really? Or is a film Help? Oh, that's coming up. I'm just going to get a dance credit. Help. You do not get a point for that. Instead. Okay. The first time, this is a pod film. Oh, film that we've covered on the part in 1999. It features an incredible central performance by Hillary Swank. Oh, boys don't cry. That's right. Don't cry. Do you know who song? Boys don't cry? Yeah, that's. When you say, yeah, do you mean no? I do. It's Robert. What's his name? I don't know his name. It's Robert Smith. Robert Smith is the, is it a D band? It is a D band, isn't it? It is a D band, yeah. Robert Smith is the hair out of the cure. Yeah, the cure. When he seemed to these days, I mean, he's pretty old these days, Robert Smith. He's still keeping up with the hair. He's still doing his best. I agree. I mean, those guys go back to, I think, late 70s. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. Boys don't cry was released in 1979 song. Okay. Right. 2002 film now. Reese with a spoon to go to Fanning. A woman returns to her home state to divorce. Yeah, it also has been sweet home Alabama. Who originally sung sweet home Alabama? I assume it was a little, little innard skin nerd. It was Lynette skin. How many vows are there in Lynette skin? I don't know. I think they, apparently they named the group after a PE teacher, a gym teacher named Leonard Skinner. They pronounce them Lynette skin nerd. I, I only found this out when I had to write it down. When I was writing these these Lynette skin, it features no vows at all. It's all wise. Oh, yeah, that's right. Well, why? Sometimes a vowel. So the, oh, Lyn, it's the vowel in the first syllable, they're Lyn, Lyn nerd. Erd, the erd, right. Erd. There's still a missing vowel. They're missing consonant and then skin nerd. I don't know. I think that's SKYL. So like Sky. Yes, SKY and YRD. And okay. So the wise are the vowels. The wise are all the vowels. But if you, if you tell me a wise about your teacher, I would accept your authority. Yeah, every, every, every syllable has to have a vowel. Okay. So much guess Lyn, it's going to has four vowels on it then. So I didn't know why I asked. Okay. Yeah. Question number eight. See, seven for seven here. Okay. Might, you might ace this. This is the easy group. Here we go. 1986. Now what a cast in this film, River Phoenix, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman. This film is based on a Stephen King novella. Stand by me. That's me. Stand by me. Yes. Sam Cook. Who did the stand by me? Beni King. Beni King. 1961. Stand by me. I think of John Lennon doing it, of course, as well. So good. All right. Good. Okay. Question nine from this section. 1991 film with Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis. What film have we seen with Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis in together? It's not that one. Thanks, buddy. Trading places, of course. Yeah. So it's not in trade. So it's not trading places. It's the two of them appearing in a film together again. Although neither of them is on the poster. The poster features McCauley Culkin and Anna Schlumsky. McCauley Culkin? Yes. This movie is named after a song by The Temptations from 1964. McCauley Culkin? Yes. Was he born at that time? He was post-home alone, but not by a long way. This is his early wave. I want to say richy rich, but it can't be that, can it? No, it's not that. What song did The Temptations, what are they famous for? And it's not... I think they did. Pupil was a Rolling Stone, wasn't it? It's not my girl. Well done. It is my girl. My girl. Yep. McCauley Culkin and Anna Schlumsky, my girl. Boy, I do not remember that film at all. I have not seen that film at all. Number 10 is a 1986 spy comedy with Whoopi Goldberg, directed by Penny Marshall. A spy comedy. A spy comedy, which features a very early version of e-mail, which is central to the plot. And it's named after a Rolling Stones song from 1968. I don't know why I say from 1968, because basically every Rolling Stones song that anyone has ever heard of is from 1968. Whoopi Goldberg. Penny Marshall. It's one of those kind of quite weird eight-teas comedies. Yeah, and it's a spy film. Yeah, it's a spy film. Yep. Named after a Stones song. The song may be more famous than the film. Yeah, I don't think I know it. This is Jumping Jack Flash. Oh god, really? Yeah. That sounds late for Jumping Jack Flash. I would have thought that was an earlier tune. Jumping Jack Flash 1968. Okay. I don't think the song was '68. The film was '86. There's so much wrong with that. Like the title doesn't sound like a spy film. Whoopi Goldberg and Penny Marshall making a film in 1986 with a Rolling Stones song for a title that just, it was it successful? It just successfully have to exist on the IMDb. With those big into that, what do you will? With those bits of information, I'm going to say that's implausible. I don't know if that's a film or not. Okay. Right. Nine marks out of the first out of the first 10. Pretty good. Pretty good. Okay. You want to move on to the next 10? It gets slightly harder. Yeah, let's do it. Let's do it. Let's do it. Okay. I'm still with it. Only slightly harder. No, you may not. It's fine. This is as hard as I do. Okay. Number 11. 1999. This is a comedy that spawned many sequels. Stars Jason Biggs and Alison Hannigan. American Pie. It is American Pie. You will know what this is. What's the song American Pie about? American Pie, I guess, is really about the plane crash that killed the buddy Holly. Buddy Holly. Yeah. Richie villains. Yeah. Number 12. Yeah. 2009. Horror comedy. With Megan Fox and Amanda Seafried. I think it's Seafried. Seafried? Seafried. I think it's Seafried. Seafried. Written by Diablo Cody. Oh. This film is named after, and I didn't know this. This is something which I only found out preparing the quiz here. It's named after a song by Whole. It's Courtney Love's Band, isn't it? Yeah. I think from their debut album Live Through This. I've never seen this film. I think it's called, is it Jennifer's Body? It is Jennifer's Body. Magnificent. Yes. Well done. I have never seen this film either. But Megan Fox shows her comedy chops apparently. Oh. What? Right. Number 13. Pretty recent. 2017. This heist movie is directed by Edgar Wright. It's about a getaway driver who always wears earbuds. Are you going to give me an actor? I'm going to give you a bunch of actors. Lily James. John Hamm. Kevin Spacey is big on the poster. Ansel Elgort is the lead. This film is named after a song by Simon and Garfunkel. I want to say baby driver. You are right. You want to say the correct answer? It is baby driver. Once again, I didn't know that was a song by Simon and Garfunkel. Did I do Hot Fuzz though? For some reason. Hot Fuzz was on my list. Yeah. I was going to go with that one. But you didn't say Jamie Corden and I figured and I haven't seen baby driver. So. Right. There we go. Number 14. 1993. There's a coming age comedy directed by Richard Link later. '93. '93. Named after a Led Zeppelin song from that first album. I did not need that clue. 'Dasten Confused.' 'Dasten Confused.' That's another one that I thought was probably a little earlier than that. That's good. Okay. Yeah. Okay. I didn't know that Led Zeppelin song actually is a largely a cover. It was originally written by Jake Holmes. But I think they changed like the melody of the lead line, something like that. Okay. But I think he actually largely gets the credit. It's kind of early in their career where they were so steeped in blues. That's probably an old blues tune is my guess. Yeah. Yep. Yep. Right. You're storming this round to number 15. Yeah. 1997 film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Pod favourite. Yeah. Mark Wahlberg and Bert Reynolds. Yep. Yep. Yep. Well done. This is a film about the adult film business. And it's named after in 1977 disco classic by the band Heatwave. Boogie Nights. Boogie Nights. Excellent. I just had a senior moment like that. I know the film. And it was so senior that no other title was coming into my head. That's how blank I was. Whereas I should have had Bert Reynolds mustache, right? We've been talking about mustaches a lot lately and that should have given it to me. But I think they really deserve a comeback. Yeah. Yep. Yep. I should do something about that. We should be leading the charge. This 1991 film was directed by John Singleton and it stars Ice Cube and Cuba Gooding Jr. I want to say boys in the hood, but that's not a song is it? It is a song. It's a song by EZE. Who's one of NWA. Yeah. So the movie is named after the song, which was from 1987 boys in the hood. That's a different kind of senior moment right there. That's a senior moment like you're so out of time that you're a senior. This 1992 crime thriller stars Steven Ray, Miranda Richardson, Jay Davidson and Forrest Whitaker, who spoiler gets run over in about the first 10 minutes of the film never appears again. What a moment. That's for me. That's a great film moment. I like it when you kill a protagonist early on or you just do something wacky. That's not the hero's journey. Kill, kill off that. Yeah, the main Hollywood name, but it is the crying game. It is the crying game. Yeah. Do you know who originally sang the the crying game, the song? I think it's very a lot older than I think it is. I don't know. Yeah. So it was covered by George in the soundtrack for the movie, but the original song was sung by Dave Berry in 1964. I would not know Dave Berry if you walked in right now and gave me a coffee. This 1986 Francis IV Coppola movie is next. Okay. It's named after a buddy Holly song from 1959. What was Francis IV Coppola doing in 1986? This film stars Kathleen Turner and Nick Cage in a time travel comedy drama. Time. It was channeling some of the energy left over from back to the future. This film. Cage. And I was surprised as directed by Francis IV Coppola. I didn't realize he directed this. I might have to take a zero on this. I know that. Yeah. This film, you may kick yourself. You might know it. I've never actually seen this film. I like Kathleen Turner. This film is Peggy Sue, got married. Is that a buddy Holly Tim? It is a buddy Holly Tim. Yeah. I should have known that one. Yeah. It was going to take me too long though. I can't have the audience. The listeners just listening to that air. Exactly. Right. 1991. It's a lot of 80s and 90s films here. I love that. 1991. It's rom-com drama stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino, but it is not Scarface. That's right. It's also directed by Gary Marshall. There are a number of names that keep coming up. There's a few people who love to make films based on songs. But there's Penny Marshall before, wasn't it? Oh, shit. Was it? Oh, there you go. Yes. You're right. It was Penny Marshall before. But there I think Gary Marshall. Gary is the father, is that right? Is that right? Okay. I was telling you earlier on in the show that you're the one who brings all the erudition and the knowledge. Well, that might have been totally wrong though, so let's just pretend I'm right. Yeah, but it's been broadcast in a podcast now, so it's officially canon. What? 1991? This film is named after a traditional American popular song. It's a bird about it. It's had versions released by Louis Armstrong, by Johnny Cash, by Sam Cook, by Lena Horne, by Stevie Wonder, by Van Morrison, and by Lindsey Lowen. They've all recorded the song? They've all recorded this song. Yes. Van Morrison and Stevie Wonder. Yeah. Those are the two that I have to focus on. Is the name of a woman? Partly. Yeah. Back to back zeros, I was going to think. This is Frankie and Johnny. Frankie and Johnny, Michelle Pfeiffer, Al Pacino, 1991. I haven't seen it. You're still storming it in my book. I don't know. Got seven this round and there's one more to go. Yeah. And the last one is a pod film. Oh, good. I love pod film. This podcast film is a documentary from 2022 that is named after a song by Steely Dan. It's a song from the album Countdown to Ecstasy. The film is about a man. It returns to school with a new identity. Oh, yeah. I guess it's just called My Old School. It is called My Old School. Yes. It is called My Old School as is a song. Is that two years ago or is that just last year? You know, I think we tried to cover it in 2022 and there was a problem. It was not watchable in the UK. Yeah. And so we had to postpone it, didn't we? To 2023? I don't know if that was with Cass or what, but I don't remember what we compared it. Yeah. I think it was. I think it was. I think it was. Was it? I feel like it was with Cass. Okay. Good. Dean, do you know where Steely Dan get their name? I do. I don't know that we can talk about this part. That's just a marital aid. It's something that belongs in boogie nights. Yes. In the book Naked Lunch, I believe there's a marital aid that goes but nearly Steely Dan. So you so far have scored 17 out of 20. Okay, good. You are storming it. I think 60% is well within your grasp. Right. We're going to round three, 10 more. You ready? Okay. So they get a little bit harder now. A little bit harder. A little bit harder. A little bit harder. This 1995 sci-fi noir film was directed by Catherine Biglow from an idea, I think, by James Cameron. So then it's a film raised in 1995. It was set in 1999 about a world where memories and experiences can be recorded and shared using special headsets. Start Ray Fiennes, Angela Bassett, Juliet Lewis. That is a very mid-90s cast right there. Yeah. Strong, big 90s. Named after a song by The Doors. Like James Morris in The Doors. Yeah. Who calls him James? Someone who's trying to stall for time while he thinks about the name of a movie from 1985 calls him James because it takes longer to say James. James, James, James. Stretch it out. That's got to be a film that I haven't seen that's for sure. That's not, this is the end. Nope. Zero. Nope. It's Strange Days from the album of the same name, apparently. Yeah. Now, I've written in my notes from the album of the same name and I haven't specified with the same name in question as The Doors or Strange Days. Strange Days. Maybe it's from the album The Doors. Oh. I'm going to say Strange Days. Yeah. Was there a Doors album called Strange Days? No, I think it's called The Doors. Yeah. Okay. Well, there you go. I was wrong again. But no points. No, no point. Definitely not. I can't even think of the song right now. I'm having a hard time remembering it. Strange Days. There you go. Yeah. Edgar Wright is back. Yeah. Good. For the next question. Edgar Wright again, 2021, Edgar Wright film with Anya Taylor Joy and Matt Smith about time travel back to 1960s London. This movie is named after a song by Dave D. Dozy Biki Mick and Tish from, that's the name of the band from 1968. What is, what is this Anya Taylor Joy film? Um, Edgar Wright, is it the? Yep. Pilgrim on Peter Pilgrim, Paul Pilgrim. Nope. Oh. Nice idea. Yeah. It's about about about where things were happening in 1960s London, which, which bit of London was it all happening in? 1960s? 1960s. Maybe Camden Town. That's where I would be. Nice try. Not quite. Did I tell you? Yeah, please. It was last night in Soho. Last night. That's a? Yeah. That's an Edgar Wright film from three years ago. Is it really? Yeah. Anya Taylor Joy, okay. Okay. Moving on. Boof. The mustache mix and reappearance. That was good. Tom Selick. Oh. Stars in this 1989 film with F. Murray Abraham. Yes. Yes. Yeah. That's the response to him these days. This film is about a man who's framed by two corrupt cops for a drug deal, named after a song by Biddy Joel. Biddy Joel has a lot of songs. That's, that's kind of, how about the stranger? No, not again. It was a fairly successful single in the UK, this song. Yeah. I think if you stop 10 people in the street, five of them will be able to sing it. If you're going to name a Tom Selick film about a man who has been framed for a crime he did not commit after a Biddy Joel song. All right. I can't take credit for that. An innocent man. An innocent man. I'm giving it. That's too generous. You were leading the witness. 1990. This film was written by Nora Efron, stars Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. And fascinatingly, this film is based on the life of the same guy that Goodfellers was based on. Really? Yeah. It's named after a song from 1927. Originally sung by Gene Austin, then covered by Fats Domino. The poster shows Steve Martin and Rick Moranis and a lawnmower. Ring any bells? Fats Domino. No. Oh, sorry. Yes. Fats Domino. Look at that. Fats Domino. I was going to say, no, Domino is, that's the Kieran Knightley film with by Tony Scott, isn't it? No, no, no. This film is called My Blue Heaven. Not Blueberry Hill. Okay, right. Maybe you're lucky to have sidesteped it. Okay. We're going to look at another Steve Martin film. 1987. Steve Martin, Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall. This film is based on the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, but as a fireman. Yeah, it's called Roxanne, but it is called Roxanne. Who sang the song Roxanne? Well, it was a police tune that I remember, but is there an earlier version of it? Nope. Yep. Yep. It's the police. 1978. I think apparently that gave the name. Oh, really? To the movie. Yeah, apparently so. Who would have thought? Okay. So, Stelvester Stallone, he appears a lot in his quiz as well. So, Stelvester Stallone movie from 1993. Stelvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Dennis Leary, Sandra Bullock in her first role of any significance. Rocky 13. Is that a song? That's coming up next year. Yeah. This film stars some sea shells in a much quoted scene. This is a sci-fi time travel action film named after another song by the police. Oh god, that sounds terrible. I don't think I want to see this film. Yes, I saw it and it was terrible. This film is pretty terrible. It's not walking on the moon though. It's not walking on the moon. It's not messaging the bottle either. I'm not sure that it was a single. It's from Ghost in the Machine, this song, but I don't think it was a single. The one saving grace of this movie is Sandra Bullock, who was really good in it. She's very watchable in this film. Oh boy. Otherwise, it's pretty dire. It's not spirits in the material world. We're going to slowly get it. Is it synchronicity part two? No. No, because that's on synchronicity. That's not on. That's not a Ghost in the Machine. Nope. I got one to come on. This is Demolition Man. Oh my god. It's not a fondly remembered film from the Stelvester Stallone. Yeah, it doesn't. It seemed like a good title for the space film. I mean, during the '80s and the '90s, there were just a lot of movies named after songs. I would call that film Seashell Man. Seashell movie. I think it's something to do with the quality of the cocaine that was widely circulated during that era, I think. Speaking of cocaine, 1983, this Nick Cage film, Debra Foreman, this film was based on and named after a Frank Zappa song that he recorded with his daughter, Moon Unit Zappa, who I once saw live. Really? Emceeing a comedy night in Los Angeles, yes. So she worked as a stand-up. This must have been like, I don't know, late '90s, I think. She was emceeing her. She knows she was quite amusing. I don't think she was calling herself Moon Unit, though. I think she might have called herself Moon Zappa. Yeah, Moon. Or might have been giving herself a slightly less crazy first name. Unit's like a middle name. Who uses the middle name? Where you could just be Moon. If my first name was Moon, I would definitely use the unit. That's Moon Unit, just scans better. 1983 and you said Nick Cage and who was the actress? Debra Foreman. Nick Cage in 1983 is like 12 years old. What is Frank Zappa's most famous song that has his daughter just talking through the whole song? And she says, "Gag me with a spoon, totally grody." Oh god. Oh, that's where that comes from? Oh, Valley Girls. Valley Girl! Yep, apparently Frank Zappa was approached by a lot of people to option his song as a movie. So I think there were several offers. It is Valley Girl. Right, well, I'm going to scoot on to question 28 then. This 2002 absurdist rom-com was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It is almost certainly Adam Sandler's best film. Which is not saying much. Yeah, yeah. Emily Watson is in it. Philip Seymour Hoffman is in it. It's punch drunk love, but it is punch drunk love, yes. Is that a Chardade song? That is a radio head song. Oh, okay. This one is a slight cheat because the song apparently is punch drunk love sick sing a lot. Oh. But the movie was named after the song. It's been abbreviated. But it's been abbreviated, yes. But apparently they did name the movie after the song. He has another film named after a record store, too, doesn't he? So I could give you the point on that. You got the point on me. Yeah, please, please. Yep. Yeah, oh, yes, definitely. Right. Number 29. 2018, Steve Carell, Timothy Chalamet. This is a film about a man and his son who is struggling with drug addiction. Who? Named after a John Lennon song from the album Double Fantasy. What is this recent film with Steve Carell and a drug addicted son? Double Fantasy. Good idea. No, no. That would just be slightly too obvious. What would be having said that literally 15 seconds ago? I want to say, is it a Yoko song or a John Lennon song? Ooh, maybe I'm asking you. Oh, now you're asking. I don't know. Are you stalling again? Is it beautiful, boy? It is beautiful, boy. You were stalling, but you were just teasing me. You knew the ah, ah, ah, ah, beautiful boy. Okay, last one in this round, 2019 film, directed by Ryan Johnson with Daniel Craig as an eccentric Belgian detective. Yeah, featuring Jamie Lee Curtis. Chris Evans. He's Belgian? No. I think he's Belgian, isn't he? I thought he was supposed to be Belgian. No, I think he's from Louisiana, isn't he? Oh, is that right? I think it's Knives Out, is that right? It is Knives Out. Okay, well, I've completely misinterpreted that action then. Maybe it shows what Daniel Craig is like with that. He's from Louisiana. I thought he was Belgian. Oh, God. I thought it was supposed to be like a poor old type thing. No, I think it's an Akkadian accent, but I didn't know that's a song either. I'm very confused. Belgian Knives Out. What? Huh? So, do you know who sang this on Knives Out? No. It's Radiohead again. Oh, gosh. There are some patterns forming here. Well, you got seven on that round. Yeah, really? It's pretty good. That's not bad at all. So, you've already reached 24. Okay. You've got your 60% already. You can afford to get them all wrong from here on. And I promise you I will. So, there we go. Yes, that's lucky, because you probably got it all wrong. This is the hardest goop. Okay. So, why do they seem hard to me? They might not be hard to you. So, 1985. This film style, Sarah Jessica Parker, Shannon Doggety, and Helen Hunt. It's named after a song by Cindy Lauper. I know a couple of songs by Cindy Lauper. Well, maybe it's one of those. How about girls just want to have fun? It is, girls just want to have fun. Yes. All right. Apparently, that song was actually originally recorded by Robert Hazard in 1979. Wow. And Cindy Lauper's version in 1984 was the one that was a hit. Well done, girls. Just want to have fun. I have not seen it. No, I don't think I have. Steve Martin reappears there in 1984. I told you this. There's just some names that keep coming up. Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin, directed by Carl Reiner, written by Phil Alden Robinson. Sorry. He made Field of Dreams sneakers. This film is about a woman who transfers her soul into Steve Martin's body by mistake. And it's named after a jazz standard sung by Billy Holiday. But what is this 1984 film? She puts herself into the body of Steven Martin. Yeah. But I think she's planning to put her body in her soul into the body of her teenage granddaughter, something like that. But she misses and hits Steve Martin instead. I don't know if it's Gerald. No, it's Billy Holiday. Great performance by Steve Martin in this film, effectively playing two people at once. No, no, no. This film is all of me, all of me, all of me, okay. Right, 1984, John Hughes film with Molly Ringwald again, Anthony Michael Hall, is a coming of age comedy. Apparently, if we watch this film these days, it has some very problematic scenes. It's probably not a film that could comfortably be watched by a modern audience. But it's named after a song by the crests of 1958. Sixteen candles. What is this? Sixteen candles. It is 16 candles, yes. Okay. Robert Town wrote this film and directed this film. It is called a romantic crime film on Wikipedia. What a genre mashup. 1988, Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeiffer again, Kurt Russell, Raw Julia. This film is named after a song by the Eagles from the album Desperado, but it is not called Desperado. What is this Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeiffer movie? He's trying to trick me. Michelle Pfeiffer has already come up once, I think. She has already come up once, isn't she? So, she's not with Al Pacino this time. She's in Mel Gibson. Romantic crime caper. Yeah. Robert Town. Yeah, Robert Town. The thing is I know that he's not known for too many things, but Chinatown, of course. It's not Chinatown, sadly. It's not an Eagles tune. Nope. I don't, I don't have it. Nope. This movie is Tequila Sunrise. Oh god. Yeah, I've never seen it. It was kind of in my head, but I don't. Right. Next question. This 1991 horror comedy stars Patrick Bergen and Kristi Swanson. Come on. Give me some people I recognize. Patrick Bergen in Kristi Swanson. I have never seen this film. I did not recognize this film, but it's named after a song and an album by AC/DC. Back in Black? No. Good try though. It's quite believable. I'll give you another clue. The poster for the film, the poster I saw online is a truly rotten, terrible looking poster. The poster for the film shows a road. What road have AC/DC written a song about? I don't want credit. I way to hell. I don't get credit. I way to hell. Yes. Who is the director? Have I written it down here? I haven't even written it down. For the writers? This film, it's a horror comedy. All I've written is the stars. This is an extremely small print film. Okay. The most notable thing about it is this named after an AC/DC song. But you got it. You got the point. Right. The year 2000, this film is directed by Steven Fries. Who came to talk to us at school? Didn't he think about the Queen? He came to talk about the Queen, yeah. He did come to talk about the Queen. This film shows John Kuzak and Jack Black. I love this film. Two dudes working in a record show. I love this film, yeah. It's adapted from a book by Nick Hornby, which was named after a song by... I don't know who wrote that song. Elvis Costello. High Fidelity. High Fidelity, yes. Did you write a song called High Fidelity? Yeah, he did. Well, I think the song is about infidelity. I think it's a clever Elvis Costello puns. It's interesting you put it right after I went to hell. High Fidelity. I'm starting to see patterns. Valley girl, beautiful boy. They were close together. Oh, yeah. Even I didn't spot that pan. It may be something to do with doing an alphabetical list to start with and then moving them around and it might be to do with that. Right, 1986, this neo-noir British crime film stars Bob Hoskins and Kathy Tyson and Michael Caine, directed by Neil Jordan. You think they help? By Neil Jordan with David Leland. What about Helen Mirren? No, I don't think Helen Mirren is in this film. No, I don't think so. This film is named after a song by Nat King Cole. Neil Jordan. That should give it away, really. Yeah, this is a pretty landmark British kind of film, actually. Well-regarded. I feel like you have more hints that you're not. Well, the Nat King, Mr. Maybe a bit of a giveaway that Nat King Cole's song is named after a famous painting. Oh, the last supper. Incredibly, no, not the last supper. Mona Lisa. Mona Lisa. That was too much. I can't take credit on that one. That's no good. You were doing pretty good for the difficult round. Okay, also 1986. This film begins with a white picket fence and a severed ear. Blue velvet. Blue velvet. You know who sung some blue velvet? I think it's one of those things that a lot of people have done. It could be Elvis, but... Tony Bennett originally, I think, had a hit with it, but it was number one for Bobby Vincent in 1963. Wow, yeah. It's probably his version that appears in the film, maybe, I think. Yeah. Two more to go. You're doing spectacularly well here. Two more to go. Neither of these are films to be proud of. Question 39. 2003, this film is directed by Peter Berg. It stars Dwayne Johnson, Christopher Walken, Sean William Scott. It's a film about a bounty hunter in Brazil, a comedy action picture. Red notice. No, it's not. It's almost the same film as Red Notice, actually. Yes. This film is named after a song by Guns N' Roses. Yeah. Oh, God. From the album, Appetite for Destruction. Yeah, I was going to say Appetite for Destruction. Um, hang on. I might know this, but I might not. Does Dwayne Johnson play a gay character in this film? I don't think so. Okay. Can I don't know it? So long time since I watched this, though, and I've largely erased it from my mind. It's not like welcome to the jungle, is it? It is exactly like welcome to the jungle. In fact, it is welcome to the jungle. I'm fusing it with another film, I think, but I'll take the credit. I want points on that one. Um, slightly unfair, because I think in the US, it was called the rundown. Oh, it was called Welcome to the Jungle in, uh, in Europe. Oh, really? So that's a bit of a cheat. Okay. But you get the point? Yeah, I'll take it. I'll take it. I'll take it at either point. Okay. Number 40. This is the last one of all the Clunkers. This is the Clunkeriest. Uh, this 1986 comedy would not get made today. Uh, see Thomas Howe, Ray Dawn Chong, James Earl Jones, Julia Louis Dreyfus is in this film. Uh, oh my God. Do I have to say what it's about? Yeah, of course. This is a, this is a film about a law student who tries to get a student loan, which is only available to students of color by taking a huge overdose of tanning pills. Ooh. Wow. Um, it's, I, I watched, I haven't seen this film, but I did watch the trailer on YouTube as research. Um, oh my goodness. This is, this is some quite remarkable work here. Um, but it's a shame because it's named after a truly funky song, a great song by Sam and Dave. Um, it's probably Soul Man as my guest. It is Soul Man. Yes. I've never seen this or heard about it, but I'm, I'm hanging up right now. I want to go see the dream. Do not dirty your brain with this film. Um, but the, the, the song is great. Uh, and do you know that there was a re-recording of the song, which was released to promote the film, uh, which, which, and it was covered by, do you know who? Um, what you said, 1986. Yeah. The Blues Brothers did it, I think, in the late '70s. Oh, well, maybe the, the version that promoted this 1986 film was, uh, sung by Lou Reed. Oh, really? Yeah. Lou Reed does a great version of Soul Man. Encriminated by association, I guess. Yes. Yes. Yes. It's probably not his proudest moment now. Oh, man. I can't believe it. On the difficult round, you got another eight points. So that means that you scored 32. It is another 80%. Wow. Incredible. That's generous. I thought that was going to be a lot harder. Your clues are great. Um, and for the ones where I give away the title. Yeah. For those of you playing at home, or I realize most of you are listening to this on your phones or playing as you walk, playing as you work. I'm sure you did better than I did, but 32, uh, for you, not bad. 32. That's a stand. That's a speedy sound, right? Yeah. Right. Well, uh, I'm going to have to return to my usual role of being the thick one again, then, after spending an enjoyable half an hour pretending to be the clever one. Great. Uh, well, let's, now that I'm going to be, I'm going to be the thick one again, and you're going to be the clever one. Let's go and see a clever movie. Should we go and watch Twisters? Wait, wait. That's a clever movie. We're about to find out, I think. Let's do. Let's do. Let's do. Let's do. Let's do. Let's spark up the wind machine. [BLANK_AUDIO]
