[Music] Good morning and welcome into the Captain Jacob Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you broadcasting live from Halos Hall here at Lake Forest and now it's time for Shot of No Shot here's Shay Norley. Good morning boys on a beautiful Wednesday nice enough to be outside and Halos Hall today up in there's training fans. It's gorgeous. You're well done Danny and Aaron. Well done. Get us out here again. Awesome. HBO did a very nice job making this place look special on Hart Knox yesterday. How are we feeling on a Wednesday? Well it is special. Look at what they've done to the facility here. Look how the green grass and of course the trees everything else it is beautiful. It is absolutely awesome. I told you walking around yesterday I went to both fields it is just a different vibe. I'm watching guys how to interact and last night DJ Moore gets his contract extension on Hart Knox and who is the first guy he talked to down there put pen to paper and they were talking Nate Davis. So all this I don't know about this Nate Davis and how his teammates are that was the first guy he talked to. I thought it was cool. So the Nate Davis thing is not about his bedside manners but well now you can stay healthy. Exactly. Can you play football? That's the ultimate question. Good enough guy. Just kind of wonder whether that he is going to make this football team. Yeah he's got it. Gotta stay healthy and be on the field man. So yeah good to see George by the way coming by his scooter zipping right by good morning good morning. He just walks. He just comes right by the scooter. That's he done. So all right Che what do we have? All right Hart Knox last night introduced Caleb Williams by comparing him to Chicago's all time greatest and Michael Jordan. It was complete with the Allen Parsons project passing montage from Caleb all of the hype imaginable. We're going to play it. I don't think you can get bigger in terms of hype and it was funny with Saban talking about the media expectations and all this for HBO to comp him to Michael Jordan play Allen Parsons all of it. You can't get bigger. That was the culmination of the Caleb Williams hype for me. Yeah. It also got me thinking biggest thing since Michael Jordan is one thing. What would it take? What would Caleb need to do to be bigger than Michael Jordan? Impossible. No shot. Caleb Williams would need to win six Super Bowls to be bigger than Michael Jordan. He can win eight. He's not going to be bigger than Michael Jordan. He will never be bigger than Michael Jordan and that's insanity to even talk about it. He will I don't believe he can win more than Brady. He will not ever be bigger than Michael Jordan. He's not the athlete to high flier. He won't have the impact on society Michael had with Jordan brand. That's a multi-billion dollar company like worldwide. It's never going to be that. To be that brand it's got to be more than just the championships. I know that we kind of dumb down our sports conversation about how many rings in a box is a guy have. It's more than just the rings in the box. It's just everything around it. It's just the Jordan way of doing things where you have players emulating you. The business side of it like Jordan still making money hand over fist. He hasn't picked up a basketball since he was with a wizard. So when it comes to Caleb Williams he won't reach that Jordan status but my hope is that he could be able to be great. Yes. I mean Michael is so far and away ahead of LeBron and this is not a shot at LeBron. Yeah. LeBron has done a lot of wonderful wonderful things. We have two different players going in the Hall of Fame for professional football that we're shouting out Michael Jordan. Julius Peppers and Dwight Frini. Yeah. And again LeBron's a great player and Kareem's a great Michael is on another level where it's listen to what other players say. Dude it ain't even close. Who was the guy the other day that said something? About Jordan? Yeah there was a big name and he said folks there's a lot of great players. It's not close. Michael is on a different planet. Nobody's close there. It was a sweet spot in the 90s to be able to watch a guy be able to develop to be the champion that he was and for people to stamp in it like yep that's the goat. Even though people love LeBron the point is though is that it's more than just the basketball. So I would say not six championships. I think I hate championships. I agree with both of you. I think there's something interesting in it where like is it NBA players there's something about them that's more accessible because we see their face when we turn them on. There's obviously fewer of them on the floor so the greatest feel closer to us. They feel more recognizable than the NFL greats where like obviously Tom Brady everybody knows. But I think as a brand Jordan is bigger than Brady. Oh that's not even close. Yeah. Not even close. Something about being seen while you play versus having a helmet on. It takes the commercials the advertising everything else for people to see you. To see your face. What Brady with the Brady brand. I mean people enjoyed Brady as a football player but when he took the helmet off the big shock of hair the handsome face the cleft chin. People say oh underneath that helmet that's a handsome man but that's after the fact though. Right but he's not worldwide like NBA. Well that's the other thing is the NBA basketball. It's so much more international. Yeah. That's where this gets interesting is Caleb is entering the league at a very critical point where the league's trying to go international. So if the league has that international success that's where I do then Caleb would have a shot. Yeah except football is never going to be bigger than soccer. Football is never going to be bigger than basketball. Internationally in China. They're not worried about football like we are here. I tell you one thing they're going to try. You see what's happening in the the Godel administration. They're going to try. They are. Because as Shay has been lamenting the idea that you're getting footballed every day. We're getting it in Mexico. Melbourne, Australia. UK and out of here. I mean they just keep doing it. They keep trying. They want to be able to catch up to the basketball. Whatever you think of basketball it's not like it used to be. It's still the global game. The NFL wishes they could be like that. Agreed. All right Jay. All right Hardknocks also highlighted last night a couple players on the fringes of the roster. Theo Benadet who had his stellar moment singing in an eagle American Eagle Thong basically. So he also suffered a grade two strain in the preseason game on a field goal rep. They also showcased Colin Johnson who was joking about making history with his performance at the Hall of Fame game. Shot or no shot. One of these two guys will make the Bears roster. That's a shot. Colin Johnson and I know that that was a hype in practice yesterday cap. We're watching Colin Johnson to see him in person. Big guy. Big next. A tall guy Johnson. Johnson's going to make the football team but he will not have the heroics as we saw in game one in the preseason. He'll make the team but those are DJ Moore's touchdowns. That was a Roma Dunes A's touchdowns. There's a spot for him. There is but not a main spot. No not yet. He looked really really good but you're right. Those touchdowns against the Tennessee Titans. That's touchdown DJ Moore. Keenan Allen across the back of the end zone. Those are their touchdowns. Agree. So no I but as far as the the eagle the Canadian Eagle I think that's what you were loose called them the Canadian Eagle. The Canadian Eagle was the kid the the lineman right? Yeah yeah yeah but what did he call Colin Johnson? He had a name for him too didn't he? There's a lot of Jerry Rice talk in that and Jerry Rice tonight right. And I was listening. I was on the post game show last I brought to you by Dr. Pepper after Hart Knox and Sylvie and a bunch of us were talking that when Colin Johnson was there and then you've got this Caleb Williams he's going to be around a while and who was it DJ Moore my receivers you think they're keeping. You know what I thought that was really good. Can I just say something? That was raw. I thought that that conversation was odd. You're a rookie. Why do you care how many receivers? How many quarterbacks? It's just very it's something that you and I would talk about. Well that was DJ who said that. No but on the sideline we saw Caleb Williams right with the headset. Yeah and then we're discussing like the roster composition. Yeah he said Colin Johnson that guy's going to be here for a while like really good and then TJ goes how many receivers you think they're keeping. That's how it came out. I'm like I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. The Canadian Eagle I don't know Shay. What's that injury? He's going to miss all the camp. I know. That feels like the heartbreaker or Hart Knox where Paul's going to have to miss all the camp. Yeah Theo we're sorry man. That's okay. He's got a $20,000 signing bonus. Shay. In this economy. That's what he said. That's a few weeks. The speaking of guys who might not make the roster. The Bears have started giving Vailous Jones reps in the backfield as a ball carrier. It's not an unprecedented position switch. Vailous in his career limited sample has been effective running the football. So shot or no shot if Vailous Jones wants to make this team it will be as a gadget running back in the vein of Cordero Patterson. God. That's so so yeah. I do not think Paul's cuts a third round pick. His first offensive player he took. I don't think he's cutting it. I don't. He's going to let him return kicks in this new format. He's going to let him do exactly the gadget type stuff. I don't see him getting caught. Too bad Johnson is not in that particular situation. I wish it was a real battle between Vailous Jones and Colin Johnson. I think I know who would win that one. Yeah. I don't think Vailous is getting caught. Now he's strong, tough, shifty. We'll see. Yeah. If they do move on from Herbert there's a spot for all running back on this team. No doubt running back. No doubt could be the Vailous Jones. No doubt. Waddle wanted to have Herbert in the kick return role if he's not going to be the running back and Paul's on our interview. We just had yeah shot it out DeAndre Swift how good he's looked at practice. Yep. So if you got him in Rochon then there's a strong chance that you're probably moving on from Khalil Herbert. Yes. I just I was just never a fan of Vailous Jones being on this roster from the beginning as you well know when he was drafted. Just didn't get it. Was he 31 years old with four kids when he was drafted out of Tennessee? Yeah. Yes. And smoking. Wow. He was divorced already. He was. Just kids from multiple marriages. Way too much. I thought you know I just didn't think he and if he wants to come by and yell at me from five yards away he can. Oh no. Honey stay here. Don't go after him. Take that. You want the headset? Vailous. Would you like that? Absolutely. I'm just telling you I was up front and even on camp grounds I'm telling you I wish the Bears can upgrade that position. Also last night on the heart games post game art knocks post game show brought to you by Dr. Pepper. One Mark Silverman was gushing over the handsomeness of Matt Eberfluice consistently reminding people on the show. He's handsome. He's handsome. I also frankly was rather astonished. Seeing Matt Eberfluice pool side in his backyard at that party off white quarter zip white pants white sneakers he was fitted up looking good the beard's taken care of the new haircut shot or no shot. Matt Eberfluice has become one of the most handsome coaches in the NFL. That's a shot. He's hot. He's he. Well cap. Look that look that looks like 10 wins to me. It's 11 to win to me. That's 11 win coach to me. I hope you're right. Look at him. He's hot. The glow up is outstanding. Yeah he deserves a lot of credit as does his wife and daughters. Is this the thing? Is this like he's he's laying around. He's frustrated from the season. He's got the he's got the beard going. It's like hey what if you trim this up a little mustache a little muscling of the hair. Oh yeah perfect. Yeah we're done using the product coach. You need to buy this hair dryer. $600. I said to my wife I told you this. I said to my wife do you have one of those dice and yes. I said you do. She's like yes because I use it every day. It's the greatest but it's not cheap. Yeah so I yeah he looks like he looks like a playoff coach to me. He's got that Matt LeFluor Kyle Shannon energy. Yes. Yes. Got to look the part. Let's go. His sound bites are so much better now. When he first got here he just right to struggle his way through but now he's he's pretty much locked in. He looks good man. Yeah so right. All right coming up we will give you around the NFL. Don't forget to wildle Wednesday. We'll talk to Tommy coming up at 835. Captain Jay Hood broadcasting live from Hal's Hall and Lake Forest on ESPN 1000 and also on our YouTube channel. Captain Jay Hood live from Training Camp on ESPN Chicago. Live coverage of Training Camp is presented by Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and is brought to you in part by the Chicago land and Northwest Indiana Chevy dealers. Knit both sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan and I'm not a football evaluator. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is front but there he goes. This is not Detroit man. This is the Super Bowl. I will win it. He starts to comment and call them out. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean what's on so you're looking for these things here. Time to go around the NFL right here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With you till 10 o'clock here from Hal's Hall and Lake Forest until 10 and then Mike Greenberg comes in at 10 followed by Carmen Yurko at 12 to 2 and then White Sox baseball is a tick on the A's at 2 o'clock pregame at 2.40 first pitch right here on the home of the White Sox. ESPN 1000. Wildland Sylvie after the show. Black and Abdullah after White Sox. Black and Abdullah after the White Sox. And then Amber and Ian around the NFL. Here's Shane Orlett. Last week Cody I gave you teams that made the playoffs in 2023 that I expect to miss the playoffs in 2024. Today I'm flipping it. Teams that missed the playoffs in 2023 that I expect to be playoff teams this season. Okay starting right here. I got to write this down at Hal's Hall. We have a podcast a little chunks and we'll put this out a little chunks and you don't even have to write it. Yeah you can just pick it up later off the YouTube channel youtube.com/atcappingjhood. Yeah but when I have to refer to this when he's wrong at least I've got the yellow pad page in front of me. It's fine. Teams I expect to make the playoffs after missing last season. I begin with the Chicago Bears right here at Hal's Hall adding a quarterback in Caleb Williams immediately insulating him with high level receivers DJ Moore Keenan Allen. You get a top 10 receiver in the draft in Roma Dunes. They took him in the top 10. You rework DJ Moore's contract that actually added cap space this off season. Sitting at 21 million currently. I think there's a move left out of this part before the season gets started or two. They have set themselves up really well that if health is good they can contend in this division that they should win 10 games and be a wild card team in the NFC. And the 21 mill does not have to be spent by opening day. Maybe they get Janique and Gakwe who I keep hearing for people I trust is pricing himself a little too rich for the Bears' blood so they're like we're gonna wait and that allows you at the trade deadline like when you got Montez Sweat you got like nine or ten draft picks next year. Wait a second now we can trade for that too. And you don't know what God forbid injury pops up. I heard Waddle talking about it yesterday. You have an extra second round pick so the Jets and Hassan Redick can't come to terms and they want to hold you over a barrel in a deal. Whatever. Take it. Here you go. We'll take them. Let's go. Yeah I would agree that the Bears a non playoff team becomes a playoff team this year. Alright the next up team the Cincinnati Bengals. This one almost cheating. Last year they missed the playoffs but they had nine win talent without their quarterback. This year Joe Burrow expected to be healthy. I don't think it's all great news out of Cincinnati. Offfield stuff happening with Trey Hendrickson and with Jamar Chase but they got Jermaine Burton in the draft wide receiver out of Alabama who I really like as a higher level depth kind of receiver. Joe Burrow's proven in crunch time fourth quarter of games. He's nails. I begles make the playoffs as long as Burrow stays healthy. Yeah I wonder if I could fast forward through his career Shay. What does Burrow's career look like? Is it just the one Super Bowl appearance? Does he win a Super Bowl? Because you know the Super Bowl is not for everybody. You can go for it but it doesn't necessarily mean that you can win it. So I'd like to know what his career is going to be like. I think individually with his numbers I think it'll be great but a Super Bowl still to be determined. I think a perennial playoff team the Bengals but a championship level we're gonna find out not so sure. He's an awesome football player and a great dude everybody talks about how good he is in the room and in the community. Like he's got the whole package but can he win a Super Bowl? Jamar Chase walks out the door or T Higgins walks out the door where you get one of those. The individual accomplishment I have nothing against that. I'm just wondering whether or not he'll ever win a Super Bowl championship and we're past the old days of Cincinnati being cheaper the worst organization in the world. We're past that. We're past the Marvin Lewis days but I'm just wondering well the Bengals supply him with enough for him to be able to achieve achieve that goal. They still have to prove to me that they're different in terms of the cheapness. This Jamar Chase things a little ongoing. You've dealt with the T Higgins stuff. You've dealt with the Trey Hendricks and stuff. Frankly if I'm the Bengals fan I'm furious in my organization for letting it get to this point. So they have to prove that to me but I think as far as this season goes those issues are going to be resolved. They're going to be good on the football team. We'll help some. Next team up the Atlanta Falcons. They're going to win the NFC South. That division's a joke. Tampa Bay the last two seasons combined was 17 and 17. They won the division both years. The only reason the Falcons didn't win it last year because their head coach was an idiot. How does a team draft Beijon Robinson, Kyle Pitts, Drake London, consecutive drafts you're going elite weaponry in the first round and then not use them. I have to imagine with a new coaching staff you're going to use your best weapons. Kirk Cousins joins the fray. That team wins the division. They go to the playoffs. So what do we have in that division? Carolina Terrible New Orleans and Tampa won it in Atlanta. Those are the four. Yep. Yeah I'm with you. 100%. 100%. Yeah with the Falcons because it's Kirk Cousins a healthy cousin now. Let's watch him now. I haven't heard anything in camp about him just as of yet she on a flowery branch. Anything happening here with his injury how does he look because it's all going to be on his shoulder. You know he's going to get you there. What happens when he gets there is a different story but he can get you there because he's that good. They're the dream I think for the Bears. If the Bears can get a matchup in the wild card round I think Atlanta's the dream matchup. I think that's the team you want. One and done Cousins. Caleb can get a playoff win. That's the matchup you want. How about that, Cap? Yeah I'm not. Not to get 17 weeks ahead of myself. Really making the preseason point to you. If there's any like if the Bears are going to be a wild card team. If there's any division winner that you want it's probably the one that wins this out. I'm a reserve judgment. I'll wait let's see how this all plays out. You are going to reserve judgment. I take a measured approach. Check. Next team I'm going to start taking some long shots here. Hoodie alive huh. The Indianapolis Colts will make the playoffs. That's a lie. I think the Houston Texans win that division adding what they did on the pass rush is great to me. I still have questions about Jacksonville. Offensive line is an absolute disaster. When you've Travis ETN and you still can't run the football. You stink. The Colts to me. I'm excited about Anthony Richardson. I flipped my position on him. He's a physical freak that I do have belief in as an NFL quarterback Shane Steichen, one of the best play callers in football year two. A roster with a ton of continuity. Good offensive line. They're good up front. I trust Chris Ballard as much as anyone in this league in terms of talent acquisition. I think the Colts are flying way under the radar wild card team in the AFC. Yeah. The ticket a secret ticket on the Colts. I may. I may. I may have bet. I may have bet the yes next to Colts playoffs. That's a lot. Wow. You can smell the ticket from here, Cap. The secret ticket on the Colts. It's good to announce round joints this year on Cap and Jay Hood. I like it. I like it. She's looking around like where's out. I know. I mean you and then I see another even like everybody's grown. An even if loose is beard, right? Everybody wants to look like Maddie. Actually I had it first. So maybe even if loose is. Oh yeah. That's my fear. Even if loose cop your style. Yeah. Let's get that on our knocks. Matt even flew swagger jacket. David Kaplan. I would have said beard. Not the snow in the room. But you could though. You could have a little drop top. Like a little day bound. If you like. Not top top down today hoodie. Do do do do do do. Yeah. I'm not going to have the horseshoe as my wife called around the back. Colts. How about that everybody? Secret ticket. Colts. Yes. Playoffs. The plus money action. Interesting. Make yourself some money or loose. I don't know. Maybe I just am totally wrong on this. I can roll. The last team I got for you to make the playoffs that missed last year is the Seattle Seahawks. I am not really a Pete Carroll guy. I know he's accomplished a lot. I don't view him as particularly innovative. I don't think he was an especially great in game coach. I think he surrounds himself with really good assistance. Had a talented football team. But all he ever ran was a cover three. There was never any adjustment. The offenses were vanilla bland. I actually think they may have upgraded with Mike McDonald. I think Mike McDonald can modernize this defense. He was stellar at Michigan with his internship with Jim Arva. He was stellar in Baltimore with Jim Arva's brother John. Now he gets a chance to be the head guy in Seattle. I think Seattle can bounce back a little bit, get to the playoffs. I also think this is in part because look the 49ers got problems on their hands. Brandon IU is apparently going to be traded sounding this morning more and more like Pittsburgh. New England took themselves out of it because IU doesn't want to play there. If he's traded and the Niners offense has to take any kind of step back. I think Dallas takes its step back. There's a spot and I think Seattle can occupy it. And with Dallas being out of the mix. Yeah, Dallas out of the mix. I'll buy that now. That is confirmed McCarthy fired. If Dallas doesn't make the playoffs. Oh, good. Come on. He's in the final year of his deal. By the way, Pete Carroll's got 291 wins. I don't think he's very good. I don't. You're out of your freaking mind. I think he surrounds himself with really good assistance. That's just a stupid dumb take. He's got one almost 300 games. He's got a little hall of fame. Yes. Stop yourself. Come on. You're smarter guiding that. You can go. He's not my cup of tea. The guy's that damn good football coach. His end game stuff for years now has been a disaster. He's over there chewing gum hands on his knees. Doesn't know when to use his time outs. The tip. How about the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl? The dumbest play call in history. Just chop on your gum Pete. Chop on your gum. He want 291 games. Good for him. This dude right here. Yeah, I don't like him. He doesn't know what he's doing. Just think that. Stop. You're better than that. That's it. I've always thought he's not great. Anybody who won't just hand the ball to Marshawn Lynch on the one yard line in the fourth quarter of a Super Bowl. Just keep chomping on the gum Pete. And that is our look around the NFL right here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. What flavor gum will Carol have when he goes to Hall of Fame? The exact coach. And I hope he calls Shae out right in the start of his speech. Good for him. Dumb ass Shane Norling in Chicago Hall of Fame bust Super Bowl 291 wins. Take that in. I'm happy for him. Get your gold jacket. Wonderful. I didn't think you were that great. Wow. All right. We'll hear from Tom Waddle with a Waddle Wednesday as we broadcast live from Hal's Hall here in Lake Forest. Cap and Jay Hood with day morning seven to ten. Cap and Jay Hood live from training camp fun. ESPN Chicago hot coverage of training camp is presented by Hard Rock, as you know, Northern Indiana and is brought to you in part by the Chicago Land and Northwest Indiana Chevy dealers. Tom Waddle, Tom Waddle, former wide receiver for the Chicago Bears. 1989 all Madden team and afternoon co-host on ESPN Chicago. I think he's going to start at least eight games in the national football league next year for a team that's going to give him a chance. It's Waddle Wednesday with Tom Waddle. Listen, I got a pedicure in an hour. When I get back here, the wheels better be spinning all right on Cap and Jay Hood, ESPN Chicago. It's a Cap and Jay good morning show on ESPN 1000 and we are streaming on the ESPN Chicago app as we are broadcasting live from Hal's Hall here in Lake Forest and we've got a special guest on the line because it's a Waddle Wednesday. You know what that means? Yeah, and I'd like to know why he's not right here. His estate is right down the freak of a road. You could land a plane that that guy's backyard. Tommy Waddles with us here on the Cap and Jay Hood Morning Show. Good morning, Tommy. How are you? I'm good, but I live in Long Grove now. I don't live in Lake Forest. I moved out of Lake Forest about eight, nine months ago. Well, it's that far. Well, it's not. It's not right in the same biggest estates. Are you an idiot? Check that I'm not sure of, but I don't live in Lake Forest anymore. And by the way, Shay, is Shay still hating on Pete Carroll? Yeah. He's just so ridiculous of all like, okay, you may be able to put up a case for him not to be a Hall of Famer, but to hate on Pete as a good coach Pete has been an excellent coach. Come on, Shay. He's fine. I think he's more of a cheerleader than anything else. Oh, stop it. You don't stay in the league. The guy was bad at the Jets goes to the Patriots ends badly, goes to USC, cheats his ass off, has to escape USC goes to Seattle for a few years are terrible, but the GM lands a historic secondary. You run nothing but cover three, but you've got Richard Sherman and all these guys out there, hitting people in one Super Bowl have the worst play call in the history of the Super Bowl. You know, you know, who else used to struggle with ill timed time outs and silly decisions was Andy and he redid. And then he kind of got past it and they ended up winning. So well, he got Patrick Holmes. Well, that's true. He gets no credit for developing it. No, I'm not saying that. I mean, it reads an all time grade. You know, Tommy, this whole conversation is the equivalent of a child pulling down his pants at the department store, say, Hey, mommy, look at me. That's what this is. So just so ridiculous. I'm so unbothered by this nonsense. Like the guy's got I mean, the resume is what it is. Whether he's underrated overrated. The resume is what it is. He was on the sidelines for those victories. Yeah, he deserves a credit just like the trainer. Just like the broadcasters and any of the players. So ridiculous. Amen. Nonetheless, let's talk about what the Chicago Bears since we're here. So let's talk about the Bears and training camp. What stood out most about what you saw on the sidelines for you? Honestly, Jonathan, it was is that that they didn't really do anything. And, you know, again, I just I cringe at listening to myself because the last thing I want to be is the old guy in the room screaming. But and I preface this by saying we did it the wrong way. Everything evolves over the course of time, you know, to be out there killing each other for five hours a day and double sessions and then doing it again the following day and then the next day and then the next day. We didn't do it the right way. But I just and I don't think it's just unique to the Bears. I just don't know that this is the best way to get ready for an NFL season. I know it's been collectively bargained in all, but but they were coming off an off day and then they go out in shells. And honestly, the only thing that really stood out to me guys was was the punter. I mean, he was kicking the crap out of it, which is what you expect using a fourth round pick on him. But everything else was kind of like slow motion. I just don't know, Jonathan, how they get a whole lot done. My hope would be today. You're going to get a full padded practice. Like we were there a week ago Tuesday. And I thought they got a lot done. I thought the tempo was good. I thought that they were on the field for a couple of hours there was hitting. I thought that was a really, you know, a practice where they got a lot out of it. Yesterday was kind of a glorified walkthrough in my old man opinion. But I think today, hopefully you'll get something that is, you know, pretty much similar to what I saw last Tuesday. Tommy, it was cool though. I was watching where they were going in 11 on 11 and Caleb dropped back. He looked left. He looked right. He looked middle. He looks back right and then bam to the left side. He drills one into DJ more. Mitch couldn't do that. Justin didn't do that. How's like, wow, somebody went to the progression to the bear uniform. Yeah, you can know you can notice those things cap. Like those are the things you do notice. Now, again, he on that plate, he may have been sacked as well because they're in shells and there's no contact. True. But to watch him kind of go from A to B to C and then kind of reset himself. And then he does some things that are, you know, they have he has elite traits. There is no question. Arm angle throws, he can do some stuff. And again, please don't don't, you know, I know that there will be some fools out there that take this the wrong way. But he can do some of the arm angle throws that my homes can do and some of that stuff. I'm not comparing him because we haven't even seen him take a snap in the NFL. But all I'm saying is is there are some elite traits where that will take him. I don't know yet. I have him very confident and very optimistic. But there are some things that he can do. And I think guys, he just plays the position with more. It just looks more natural. It just there's more efficiency. There's more hay. He's looked like he's been a quarterback his entire life. And I think that the one thing, though, I think we talked about this last night in the Hartnock's post game show is is that there are still things guys that that the basics that that are they're struggling with a little bit. And that's cadence. That's play calling. That's getting in and out of the huddle because those are all things. Jonathan, you watch more college football, you and Shay, than than I do. Those are things he wasn't asked to do. You basically look to the sideline, you see a picture of Tom and Jerry, and then you clap your hands a couple times, and then you're reading something that doesn't work in the NFL. So those things have to be worked out. However, that would be a great innovation for the NFL. That just adds more to the package to be able to have a picture of Tom and Jerry and she'll be. But seriously, Jonathan, you know what the better thing would be. And I think they finally, you would know this again better than I. The better thing would be to actually install a mechanism inside the helmet where the quarter coordinator in college can talk to the quarterback in the huddle instead of having to put those pictures out. Yeah, absolutely. Because it seems so old school, you're right. So hearing from Ryan Polls yesterday on our show, he was pretty committal saying, hey, we're going to have a good enough offensive line or strong enough offensive line for kiddo to work with on Saturday. Interestingly enough, Maddie Rafluis is a little bit more not committal with that. But I would agree, Tommy, that this is the right thing to do. Because when you go through the NFL, it's never going to be perfect. It's never going to be a perfect pitch for 18 weeks. An offensive line will be out, a wide receiver could be out. So however long Caleb's out there, I think it's great that he'll have an opportunity to play some coming up on Saturday. I agree with you 100% Jonathan. You know, I mean, we all respectfully disagreed last week. There are some disagreements on the station. I don't think are so respectful. Me included. But I did respectfully disagree. I thought that procedurally he could have used some work last week this week for sure. And to your point, Jonathan, look, there's a good chance, based on track record, the last 12 months, that he could be standing behind an offensive line that doesn't have the five guys that you had penciled in on the depth chart. So you better learn how to play with guys who were quote unquote backups. So whether or not Kevin Jenkins is available, whether or not Nate Davis is available or not, there are still things that he has to see and learn. And the only way you do that is by plane. And first of all, you know, Cap and I have talked to Olin about this on Olin. I'll tell you, right, Cap, the job one for the quarterbacks to protect himself with setting protections and seeing what he sees and everything else. Like you can't be reckless going to line a scrimmage. You've got to be able to protect yourself. And I think Caleb can do some of that stuff. I think Shane Waldron can protect him a little bit. And then you just don't leave him out there for three quarters, but he's got to play to the point of the offensive line. The one thing that I think not from hard knocks, but from, you know, listening to coach Ibur Fluschester today when he met the media, he basically said and referring to Nate Davis, either directly or indirectly is look, I don't believe in the concept of not losing your job. You don't lose your job because of injury. And I think he was talking about Nate. And his point was, is look, if we've got other people that are competing and doing a nice job and are reliable, we're going to plan. Now, the exception is, is like, look, if Jerry Rice, you know, pulls his hamstring, when Jerry comes back, he's going to play. But Nate Davis ain't Jerry Rice. So thought that was interesting coming from the head coach. Right. Tom, right. Right. So Tommy, let me ask you a question. They get a deal done with DJ Moore, super cool and hard knocks. Uh, where Paul says, uh, go, go ask coach Ibur Fluschester. He's all right. If we bring DJ up here to talk to his agents for a few minutes during special teams. And you see all this. And then it comes out yesterday, the details of the contract. Yeah. He's only got a seven some million dollar cap hit this year. So they now have $21 million in cap space. That's got to be by design to make a move or two. No question. There's, I have several thoughts there. First of all, I was shocked that Kevin Warren didn't get out of his chair instead of calling DJ to come up, run the pen and paper down to him. Because you could tell that Kevin thought it was a really good deal. And I think it's a great deal. I think it's good for DJ. He gets the security that he talked about wanting with $83 million guaranteed. Guys, you realize that contract is now six years and like 140 some, whatever it is, it's 24 million a year for the next six years, but he gets paid 16 and 16 over the next two years. He's underpaid today with, with the 24 million a year APR because he's better than guys that are getting paid that. So look, I mean, DJing had to do what was perfect for DJing his family. And I, and I applaud that the bears got a great deal because this guy is worth more than what they're actually paying him. And then to find out to your point, Kat, because my reluctance to want to give DJ the extension in this camp was not because I didn't want him to be part of the future because I never want him to play in another team uniform. It's because I know that they have needs and I wanted them to keep some powder dry to learn that you sign DJ to a very quote unquote equitable deal for both and increase your cap space by like 9 million. Like I've been very complimentary of what Ryan has done all along that that's that move right there. And it has to be because DJ is on board with it is spectacular because it gives Ryan a ton of flexibility to add a piece on either side of the line. Well, also shows the brothers, Rosenhouse, yes, that they are on board with the players trying to put a team to get. He said, we'll work with you. You be fair here. We'll work with you and DJ a consummate team guy in. I called it the Brady deal, Jonathan. I said, like he signed a Tom Brady type of deal, you know, like Tom Brady never took, you know, like what he was worth. He took something that was very, very good, but it was also allowed the team he was playing for to spend otherwise. All right, more with Tommy on a waddle Wednesday on the cap and jhood morning show. Captain Jay hood live from training camp on ESPN, Chicago live coverage of training camp is presented by hard Raka C no northern Indiana and is brought to you in part by the Chicago land and Northwest Indiana Chevy dealers. It's a cap and jhood morning show on ESPN 1000 and we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. It's a waddle wins as we talk to Tommy right here on cap and jhood. We're here at Lake Forest. You hear the the DJ. He's already started cap. Yep. Every year it cranks up the tunes and we're doing a radio show over here. We got the great Tom waddle and he does not suffer people that that's not true. No, that's not true. The guy there's been in the the whatever you call him is the music. Yes. He's more important than I am. Listen, the people need to be entertained out there. You know who's entertaining them right here by our booth. He's signing autographs. Big Cat Williams. Awesome. Awesome. Yes, right. He just came over. You'll fist bump me hoodie and Shay. Dude, he's the best. Yeah. He's a great player. Good to see him. He came in as a defensive lineman, Jonathan. I'm just telling that to Shay. Yeah. Drafted like seventh run out of Cheney state. He was a detackle. They went, you're not going to make the team kid. I should go to old lineman. He became a pro bowler. Yeah. Fantastic player. Oh, it's on me. We just saw this from Brook prior. Um, who covers the Steelers for ESPN.com. Russell Wilson will not play against the Texans and it is going to be Justin Fields. The depth chart came out. Fields is QB one on the Steelers depth chart. So, you know, as I thought, you know, Justin Fields has an opportunity here with a fresh, a fresh start to be able to do something. Of course, if it's going our way, this will only help the Bears with the draft pick. Right. That, I mean, that's where my, listen, I wish Justin the best. I don't, you know, if he goes and plays exceptionally well, I'm not going to regret the decision they made. They made the right decision in my humble opinion. Um, and you're right, Jonathan. The more he plays, the percentage of snaps, the higher the draft pick, the bears get in return. So, look, I, I thought all along and I think that they would tell you the, the, the plan was for Russell Wilson to be the starter and I would still be a bit surprised unless his cap is, is just a mess. If he wasn't the starter to open the season, but Justin's going to have an opportunity to, you know, kind of redefine his career in Pittsburgh. So, let me ask you a question about the receiver position because in hard knocks yesterday, you saw Colin Johnson make these really good plays, made a good tackle on special teams, caught two touchdowns and Kayla Williams turns to DJ Morny goes, he's going to be here a while and DJ Morny goes, how many receivers do you think they're keeping? Well, how many do you think they're keeping? Well, um, usually you're going to keep at least six these days and, and one guy's going to have to play special teams. I don't know what, look, I mean, you've got your top three. I think Tyler Scott obviously is a lot because he was a fourth round pick last year. And they, he's had a good camp. He has your right cap. And I think that, you know, you got to give him time to kind of prove that he is going to be a, you know, a guy that's going to contribute or a guy that ultimately is replaceable. I think Colin Johnson is a better overall receiver. He obviously is a different type of receiver, but his size and his ability to go up and get the ball. He tracks the ball. Well, he goes up and gets the ball. I would think Colin Johnson is, is on the roster. Um, he's shown you that he can play special teams. So there's five there. Um, I heard you guys talking about Vailus Jones. I'm with hoodie. I just don't know, I mean, know that he was one of Ryan's picks, but you can accomplish with Khalil Herbert, what you're trying to get out of Vailus. Why are you putting Vailus Jones in the backfield? Khalil Herbert averages five yards per carry. Khalil Herbert can be your return man, because basically, if you talk to anybody, including the officials that he said, it's, yeah, it's, it's a running game. It's a, yeah, it's a glorified running play. So who would you guys rather have with the ball in their hands if this is a glorified running play, you know, what Khalil Herbert or, or Vailus Jones? It's a scarlet letter on the play, because you see him out there. He's either, he's either going to get the play or it's just a mirage more times than not. If he's in that position in the backfield, he's going to get the ball. The defense kids are going to read that like it's yesterday's news, but we're talking about on the kick. Again, I get your hoodies point that you'd rather have Khalil Herbert back there, unless you're telling me that Khalil is going to bring me back draft capital that I'd like to have and the fall off on the kick won't be as big with Vailus. Yeah. Now I got to factor that in. Look, this is not, it's not like, Hey, you know, DJ Moore, I mean, this is a valuable position, but it's not nearly as valuable as your first or second receiver. So whatever they choose, I don't think it's going to have an enormous impact one way or the other. But I think the running back position is one where there is a bit of a competition and Khalil Herbert, I think could enhance his chances of making this roster if they would give him the opportunity to return some kicks, which we are finding out are more like, you know, glorified running plays as opposed to trying to find a spot just to justify keeping Vailus Jones. You know what I'm saying? So yeah, me, which player in your guys opinion has contributed more to the, to the, the organization over the last Herbert to you? Yeah, Dante Pettis and not Vailus Jones, not for enough for me. Right. So I mean, just, it's just what it is. I just, you know, and talking about the defense just for a second, Tommy, talking about the defensive line, you know, sometimes we confuse football with baseball and that with baseball, it's like, we got to plug this hole, plug this hole, got me. And, and you sometimes forget about young players. Listen, if the bears went with this defensive line moving forward, if they broke camp and said, sweat billings, Dexter walkers across the line. Okay, I thought that the defense got better and got better with a pass rush last year. Sure, you like to have upgrades, but it doesn't have to be today, Tommy. If it's before the trade deadline, I'm totally fine with it. But at some point, you got to develop young players. You, you drafted them for a reason. There hasn't been enough talk about Zach Pickens or some of the others that's on this roster. At some point, development has to matter. Yeah, and I think that that's, that's the, you know, what they're looking to do with Dravon Dexter and to see whether or not he adapts to that position as a three technique. He's a really interesting character to play that role because he's six, six and long. And, and that frightens the hell out of guards. Like the, you know, the, the shorter, short armed guards that, you know, they reach out and Dexter can put their hand on their helmet and they run in circles. You know what I mean? So, right. I don't know if Dexter ultimately, you know, will excel at the position, but it's very intriguing because I think he'll make some guards around the league panic a little bit. I'm with you, Jonathan. I'm fine with, with them trying to develop guys, but you also have to understand as an organization that there's patience and then there is there's just, there's stubbornness. As we broadcast live from house on lake forest, cap and jhood. weekday morning 7 to 10.
