Mike Moore Media, the first place to hear Rocky County News and Information. News is sponsored by Lane's Family Pharmacy and Home Health Care. Tropical Storm Debbie made landfall around two this morning, northeast of Charleston and is expected to pick up speed as it crosses North Carolina into Northern Virginia, bringing more rain. Rockingham County Emergency Services Director Rodney Cates, on his monthly podcast yesterday, said his agency and others started preparing for Debbie Monday, testing equipment generators, vehicles, upstamping the 911 center, getting the Swift Water Rescue Team in place, meeting with state and local partners, and daily updates with North Carolina Emergency Management. Rockingham County is on the west side of the storm, breezy, no strong winds, but significant rainfall, four inches of rain from Reedsville, north and west, more in the southern part of the county. Heavy rains today, 88,000 people across the state were without power at 630 this morning, and around 700 in Rockingham County. NCDOT is pre-staging barricades in areas known to flood. It's a misdemeanor to move barricades and can result in jail time and fines. One of the best sources of information for weather emergencies is readyinc.gov. Rodney Cates' podcast is available at mikemore.media. The Stonewall man has been arrested for stabbing his girlfriend. Rockingham County Sheriff's deputies responded to 2091 Snead Road and found Christina Nicole Hardy, 36, at a neighbor's home bleeding from multiple stab wounds. She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. She's believed to have been stabbed approximately 20 times. Joshua Blaine Darnell, 36, is in jail, charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and attempted murder. $400,000 secured bond. Keeping the Stonewall Police Department in place was top priority at Tuesday's town council meeting, but several other items were on the agenda. For the first time in many years, public accountants Rouse, Rouse, and Rouse in Eden will not be doing the annual audit. Town Administrator Barbara Hollerin is meeting next week with Bernard Robinson and Company of Greensboro and is expected to approve a contract for approximately $20,000. A side story, Trevor Gardner, who was with Rouse, Rouse, and Rouse five years, recently left to start his own CPA firm in Eden. Town Council also approved new agreements with LKC Engineering in Aberdeen, awarded a little bid to replace pans at the fire department to Martinez Concrete in Reedsville, approximately $16,000, and purchased an air compressor for the fire department $32,400. After looking at different options and hearing comments from more than two dozen citizens, all supporting the police department rather than have the sheriff's office patrol the area, Council agreed to keep the police department in place in Stonewall. 75 applications have been received for the position of chief. Heavy rains last weekend uncovered a live hand grenade on Smith Acres Road in Eden. It was old, rusted, and still had the pin in it. The area was sealed off for safety and the Greensboro Police Department's bomb squad was called in to safely dispose of it. Despite the headlines about inflation at the supermarket, the Consumer Affairs Data Assembly shopping cart index showed remarkable stability in July. The index, which tracks prices of 25 commonly purchased grocery items, rose just 36 cents after falling by $2 in June. 10 of the 25 items showed no increase from June prices. Mortgage rates are finally falling. All it took was a scary stock market sell-off caused by a week July employment report. Falling treasury bond yields are dragging mortgage rates down with them. Zillow reports the average mortgage rate is now below 6%. Should you get your dog's DNA tested? Plenty of companies can do it, but a Consumer Affairs investigation found plenty of skepticism among veterinarians. But some vets say knowing your pet's DNA might make the right food choices easier. Welcome to August 8th on the National Day calendar. Today we're embracing some neighborly fun and getting active with a unique sport. Have you ever found yourself with too much zucchini? That's exactly how national sneaks some zucchini on your neighbor's porch day came about. In the 1980s, a gardener in Pennsylvania had more zucchini than he knew what to do with. He started leaving baskets of the surplus on his neighbor's porches, sparking a quirky tradition that celebrates generosity and community spirit. So if you happen to find yourself in an abundance of zucchini, join in on the fun and surprise your neighbors with some fresh produce today. Man, I'm out of baskets. Do you have any I can borrow? Marlo, you literally left or on my porch this morning and I knew it was you. Who else is leaving zucchini? I have nothing to do with it. I'm telling you, but enjoy. Do you need my mom's recipe for zucchini bread? Yes, please. Okay, fair enough. From "Guardista Games," it's also national pickleball day. This fast-growing sport was invented in 1965 by three dads, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCollum who wanted to entertain their poor children during a summer vacation. Using ping pong paddles, a perforated plastic ball, and a bad mitten court, they created what is now known as pickleball. Named after the Pritchard family's dog, Pickles, who loved chasing the ball, the game has evolved into a competitive sport with millions of players worldwide. So grab a paddle at a friend and see what all the excitement is about with the game of Biffleball. You were supposed to teach me how to play pickleball. Well, we should go. I am so down. All right, I'm going to grab some zucchinis too because nothing says pickleball more than a basket full of zucchini. I don't know how that really. Pickle zucchini kind of looked the same. I'm picking up what you're putting down here. All right. Okay. All right, grab the basket. Let's go. All right, let's go. I'm Latoye Johnson. I'm Marlo Anderson.
