Welcome to the One Life Podcast with Becca White. I am your host and this is episode 27, What Other People Think. Yesterday I was studying in Jeremiah chapter 1, when he received his prophetic assignment from the Lord. First, the Lord tells Jeremiah that, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, and before thou came his forth out of the womb I sanctified thee." And then the Lord goes on to tell Jeremiah that he was ordained to be a prophet and to the nations. Jeremiah responds to the call by saying that he cannot speak. The Lord gives Jeremiah his words to speak by touching his mouth and promises Jeremiah that he will protect him throughout his ministry. I find comfort in the humanness of mighty prophetic men like Jeremiah who doubted his ability to do all that was asked of him. I find greater comfort in the Lord's promise that he will empower and enable his disciples. It appears that Jeremiah had a fear of what other people thought of him. For example, as Jeremiah was preparing to go about preaching to the people, the Lord told him in verse 8, "Be not afraid of their faces." And again in verse 17, "Be not dismayed at their faces." We think we can read what other people are thinking about us by the expressions on their face. This is a specific counsel for Jeremiah to accomplish his life's work, but the principle applies to all of us. Why are we afraid of or dismayed at other people's faces? Why do we care what other people think of us? Worrying about what other people think distracts us from our focus, which slows our progression. Worrying about what other people think is actually trying to control what others think of us. Or we have a specific way we want them to think about us. Worrying about what other people think does not serve us. In fact, Leo Tzu says, "Care about what other people think, and you will always be their prisoner." Caring about what other people think is a form of bondage. I also love the good old advice that what other people think of you is none of your business. So to recap lessons from Jeremiah, do not be afraid of or dismayed at other people's faces. God knows you. He knew you before he formed you in the belly. He will empower you and enable you on your journey. When insecurities arise, take a deep breath and have confidence in yourself. Take another deep breath and have even more confidence in God. We only get one life. Let's make it our best.
