KZN's number one for local news. This is East Coast Radio News Watch. In news just in Parliament has confirmed that 15 MK Party members have been removed as MPs. In a statement, it says that the Speaker received correspondence from the party about the decision. Earlier this afternoon, News 24 reported that disgruntled MPs who were surprised by the move claimed it's an effort by party leaders to replace long-standing members with their own allies. We'll have more on this breaking news story in the next bulletin. An advocacy group for seniors is calling for stronger security measures to protect the elderly and their money from criminals. EJA Guini Metro Police yesterday arrested four people in Montclair, linked to a syndicate that targeted elderly people in shopping centres. They say the syndicate is made up of three men and one woman. The modus operandi involved the woman targeting elderly female victims, drawing their attention to a stash of money dropped on the ground to distract them. She would then convince them to pick up the cash. When the victim does so, another syndicate member impersonating a police officer would approach the victim, pretending to arrest her and then escort her to a car. There the victim would be assaulted and robbed of her belongings and her bank account would be cleared out. It's believed the syndicate is linked to over 30 cases in KZN, including kidnapping, fraud and armed robbery. Police have also recovered the vehicle belief too have been used in the crimes, as well as cell phones and 2000 rand and cash. Elders voices Joe Ann Herps says many elderly people are vulnerable to fraudsters and other criminals. I think there should be, even on their banking app, there should be a second or a third measure taken. But many of the elderly don't have banking acts. They still go to the tellers because they don't know how to operate smartphones. They don't know how to operate smartphones. There has to be some measures taken to protect them. A former project manager at the city of Johannesburg is going to prison for stealing over 1 million rounds worth of diesel.
